Ambush Celebrates 30th Anniversary

obituary Jay Verona Dies Dec. 26, 2011

ay Veronawas born August 8, 1938, in the hospital in McPherson, KS, but called Roxbury, KS his hometown. His parents were Frank and Marian Verona. His mother was born in Kansas, his dad was a native of Poland, and Jay inherited that strong, tough work ethic, which served him well. He attended Roxbury Grade through High School, graduating with the Class of 1956... and loved returning to their reunions. He attended Ft. Hays State College, in Kansas, served in the Army... much of the time in Germany, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He purchased a little MG sports car there and had it shipped home. I think he soon found that car wasn’t as comfortable on the U.S. highways as in Germany. He attended airline school in 1958 in Kansas City and was hired by Delta Airlines before completing the course. His first job with them was loading and unloading baggage from planes, out on the tarmac in the middle of winter in Chicago. After toughing it out that first winter, he knew it could only get better and stayed with Delta until retiring in 1992 after 34 years. He transferred to Tulsa, Ok when the airline opened a new station there. He was very proud of the fact that he had only one employer his entire career. Upon retirement he moved to New Orleans, which became his home for the rest of his life. He was royalty with the Krewe of Olympus (QO9) when the Krewe was located in New Orleans. He was coowner of the Golden Lantern along with his Quarters. It’s part of the organizations encouragement for residents and businesses to decorate at Christmas time. Additionally, the Daisy Todd Award went to B.B. St. Roman as Patio Planters volunteer of the year.

t’s a new year and what better way to ring in 2012 with a cocktail. I believe my next choice as bartender of the month is a twofold first for me since writing this series. Misty has the distinct honor of being my first bartender chosen from the Friendly Bar, as well as my first female bartender. Yes, ladies and gentlemen it is ladies night and the feeling’s right. That is true anytime you go to the Friendly Bar when Misty Costanza is working. She is just a ball of energy and bubbly all the time. Armed with a sharp wit and amusing anecdotes, Misty brings a breath of fresh air to the neighborhood bar that has been a gay institution, as well as a Faubourg Marigny one for years.

Recently, Jeff (aka Elizabeth Bouvier) and I had cocktails there and watched the Saints game. First the bar is a great spot on game day, with great complimentary food and drink prices. But the icing on the cake so to speak is when the Saints score, everyone in the bar gets one of Misty’s famous pudding shots. OMG, it is so much better than regular shots, like a creamy burst of sweet heaven in your mouth. Gay men will love this drink (and straight ladies). Party Down!

here was definitely no rest for the weary this holiday season. I honestly think I attended more parties this year than ever before. I would like to begin part two of my holiday party

escapade by thanking all those people who invited me to their soirees and brought lots of holiday cheer. I will start right where I left off in the last issue. Monday traditionally has been a day with little excitement but not during the holidays. On Monday, Dec. 12th, I attended two hopping parties, Woods Enterprises and the Bourbon Pub. Woods Enterprises employee and special guest holiday fete is always a good time. Everyone from Rawhide, Lafitte’s, Good Friends and the Clover Grill gather to ring in the season with drinks and a spread beyond belief. The food is prepared by all the employees each contributing their own special dish, so it is like having forty chefs preparing their best plates. After several strong cocktails, the karaoke started and guests got to see their favorite Wood employee perform live. Afterwards I walked down the street to the Bourbon’s Pub holiday gathering which was catered by the Praline Connection. Once again, the bar rolled out the red carpet for their guests who enjoyed food, an open bar and celebratory company. It was a beautiful night to connect with friends, sip libations on the balcony and make merry. One of the highlights of the night was when owner Sandy Sachs presented the NO/AIDS Task Force with a check for $6,500 raised from the Pub's Oh What A Drag turnabout show. Now that kind of giving is the true meaning of the holidays. On Tuesday, the parties continued with Orlando's Society Page’s Christmas throw down. As you can imagine the food was plentiful and the outfits were fierce. Princesse Stephaney and I did the rounds that night, after their celebration, we hauled our cookies out to Metry for the LAX Tuesday show with Valerie Colby Carrington and Dominique DeLorean. What a fun crowd they had that night. There is nothing like a drag show to get bells jingling. Wednesday, two of the top gay bars threw

The food was absolutely delectable and their decorations were outstanding. I understand they won the best holiday décor in the quarter for a commercial property. The place was jammed packed with revelers. All who attended got a present early when all the ladies of Oz put on an awesome holiday drag show. The performers brought the house down with every number, especially Dusty Debris with her dead on Lady GaGa impersonation. Simply fabulous. The 700 Club had a marvelous event that drew a huge crowd also. They had sexy elves passing out jello shots, an exquisite buffet and specialty drinks being mixed by sexy staffers. They raised over $400 for Belle Reve and Project Lazarus, while Lil' Jon and Derek helped raise over $900 for St. Jude. The holiday season was in full swing at both events. I have to say, that in my line of work, you have to be a chameleon, able to transition from one social scene to the next with ease. Thursday, I went to two events with very different, lets’ say, atmospheres. The first was the Tales of the Toddy, which

under the gaydar ...from 8 is Tales of the Cocktails holiday soiree that draws several hundred people every year. This year it was held in the newly renovated Hyatt and had over twenty different restaurants and bars serving their special hot toddies and eggnogs, all made with the best premium liquor. The firefighters were present with their 2012 calendars, artists selling their wares, and unbelievable food prepared by some of the top restaurants in the city. I went with my friend Nick, and afterwards headed down to the Corner Pocket for their party. Now that is what I call a shift in crowds. The boys were not only dancing on the bar, they were everywhere. I love this place where the boys outnumber the patrons two to one. They had a lovely spread and once again there was another holiday show, led by Lisa Beaumann and the always entertaining Klorocks Bleachman. Friday finally came and even exhausted, I had a full agenda for the night. I got home early from work and whipped up some tasty treats for Jeff Mallon’s holiday party. He did an impromptu gathering of friends and supporters who he wanted to thank for attending his theatrical shows and ForePlay throughout the year. For being an off the cuff event, he managed to have a crowded house and it was probably one of the top holiday events of the season. The food was great, made by Lance, myself and La Liz. I also managed to score one of the firefighters as the bartender for the night. Jarred kept people happily cocktailed with his special peppermint martinis. After, everyone moved the party to JohnPaul’s to catch Dominique DeLorean’s new show Diamonds of the South. The crowd was amped up with everyone singing, dancing and having a good time. Saturday was not any easier than the previous day. I actually had to work that evening. Don’t you hate when your job gets in the way of your social life. Anyway, after getting off work, I drove to Metairie for the LAX holiday party. Toby and Al did a very nice job making it special. Although, showing up in the burbs, twice in one week, I thought they were going to fall out. For those who have not been to LAX, they have a really fun crowd, so you should check it out. It is an extremely welcoming atmosphere. From there, I went back to the city to JohnPaul’s to attend the Krewe of Petronius’ Gospel Revival Dinner and Show. As always the enchanting ladies of the the krewe gave the audience a rollicking evening filled with lively and inspirational entertainment. The following day, my friend Laura Tennyson and I attended a holiday Saints viewing party hosted by public relations queen Cheryl Lemoine at her home in Mid City. Now this is one lady who knows how to throw an upscale football party. She provided a full champagne bar, which allowed guests to have their glass of bubbly mixed with several different fruit juice choices such as pomegranate, orange and peach. No chips and dip for her, the posh fare included crawfish cheesecake, sun dried tomato bruschetta with feta cheese and pine nuts, and smoked salmon, and caviar. This extravagant setting combined with a thunderous Saints win made for a wonderful afternoon. We then made our way back to the French Quarter to go to the party of Jose Luis, a talented artist and fashion designer. His French Quarter

abode was transformed into a winter wonderland as he created an outdoor setting inside. Instead of a traditional Christmas tree, he took a large dead limb from an oak and flocked it white, and positioned it just such in his living room so the branches splayed out across the ceiling. From that point he hung lights and clear ornaments, so the guests had the illusion that they were partying under the oaks outside. He then had taken the tops of some dead Christmas trees and whitened them and placed them around the house strategically to continue the design from room to room. There was wonderful food prepared by him and his partner Rene as well as lots to drink before the caroling in Jackson Square. My third gathering on Sunday was Kajun Pub’s holiday/anniversary/Joann’s birthday party which was held in the bar’s adjoining special events space. So with tired eyes, I mustered the strength to continue the holiday cheer. They had a buffet and complimentary drinks as neighborhood denizens and well-wishers gathered in honor of bar baronessa and now thanks to the book Nine Lives, local celebrity Joann Guidos. Guests enjoyed themselves as a slide show featuring the wedding of Joann’s daughter played in the background. It was a nice way to end a weekend of fun. The countdown to Christmas Day began on Tuesday when the organization I am president of, the National Association of Caterers had their end of the year board dinner at Stella’s. Now dinner at Stella’s is not just an evening of great food, it is a dining experience beyond imaginations. From their inspiring cuisine to the impeccable service, my other guests and I were treated to a memorable meal. Starting with a cold beverage entitled the Ice Queen we ate and drank the night away. This restaurant has now moved into one of my top ten places to eat in New Orleans. From there my friend Alan who was at the dinner transported me to my next party via his motorcycle. There is something about riding on the back of a bike through the French Quarter that amps up your butch status. My next stop was the Double Play holiday shindig. Chuck always knows how to show his patrons a good time and this year’s holiday party was no exception. On Wednesday, I took my mother to dinner at Ralph and Kacoo’s in the Quarter then to Cirque Dreams: Holidaze at the Mahalia Jackson Theatre. This Cirque du Soleil style show was a great holiday delight with acrobatics flying through the air, tumbling, spinning, balancing and a host of other gravity defying feats. The holiday theme just put the audience in the mood. That night was also Zsa Zsa d’LaHor’s show Hump Day the Country Way at JohnPaul’s in which I have the wonderful privilege to emcee. They had a fun crowd as they did some of the best holiday classics by the stars of country. Thursday, I went to my first Chanukah party hosted by Dr. Marc Behar and Jeff Sbisa at their lovely home in the Garden District with my friend Laura. The charming Gigi Zachou did the cuisine as guests sipped drinks and mingled the night away. They had a pianist playing holiday tunes in the background and halfway through the night played one of the most fun white elephant games I have ever participated in. What was so special at this party was

under the gaydar ...from 10 when they lit the menorah and told a Chanukah story. Their mixture of spirituality into the evening made the event even more exceptional. Afterward, I caught the tail end of the Outrageous show at JohnPaul’s with Tittie Toulouse and Electra City. They had quite a crowd and I even won some red knee high stockings. Just what needed to give my dear friend Antoinette Ella Chardonnay as a stocking stuffer, no pun intended. The following day, my company Mardi Gras Productions held our annual Christmas luncheon at Drago’s in the New Orleans Hilton Riverside. The drinks flowed as did the charbroiled oysters. I love company parties, especially since I can hang out with my co-workers in a more relaxed atmosphere. After, a few of us went for drinks at Oz for a little Drag Dingo with Princesse Stephaney and Persana Shoulders. I may have imbibed a little too much, because one of my co-workers has me on film doing a body shot off another person from my company. I had to leave after a few rounds because I had to do a quick change then meet my friend Laura to go to the House for Blues for a special Heaven dance party that night. What a just absolutely extraordinary night as I received one of the Spirit of Giving awards presented to myself, Halloween New Orleans, NO/AIDS Task Force and Bryan Batt by the House of Blues. I danced the night away to the incredible DJ Alyson Calagna who is rated one of the top ten DJs in the country. After, a few of us went for cocktails upstairs in the Foundation Room, which had their own jovial vibe going. But the highlight of the night was taking a pedicab ride back to Oz with Frankie Fierce and Dusty Debris. If the party atmosphere wasn’t enough for me at House of Blues, it definitely hit the roof at Oz. Thank you to all my friends who made this night special, Laura, Dusty, Frankie, Persana, Misti and many more. What a great way to kick off the Christmas weekend. I began Christmas Eve by spending the day with my mom cooking and preparing for our large family holiday meal at her house on Christmas. We laughed, listened to holiday music and drank champagne as we made the shrimp and

andouille cornbread dressing, crawfish and mirliton casserole, Jack Daniels Bread Pudding, stuffed celery, baked macaroni, lasagna and many more tasty dishes. I thoroughly enjoyed this special time with my mom, as she taught how to make these recipes that have been in my family for years, After all the fabulous events I went to this season, it seemed that it is the simple moments that mean the most. After a day in the kitchen, I got right back on that party bus and went to three events that night. The first was my friend Laura Tennyson’s open house in the Marigny. Being a chef, her fiancé Gary had superior fare for the guests.

A New Year

y the time this is published the year will already be filled with busyness. As for me I will be thinking about the Feast of the Epiphany. As for you that means Twelfth Night and thinking about Mardi Gras balls. Perhaps we will all be rejoicing in a Saints Super Bowl victory or maybe saying, “next year!” I will be thinking about Ash Wednesday and Lent. As for you - well maybe “giving up” something like drinking too much or losing five pounds might be on the mind. My thoughts will wander invariably to Holy Week followed by Easter and maybe your thoughts might be wandering to what outrageous bonnet will be worn for the Easter Parade. In April my thoughts will go toward the Dodwell House Extravaganza which is THE principal fundraiser for St. Anna’s Church and missions. Maybe your thoughts will be on Jazz Fest, The Angola Rodeo, French Quarter Fest or Gay Pride in June! We will start off projecting our plans and thoughts and hopes barely moments after the baby drops, the echo of fireworks subside, and we weave our way home on New Year’s night. Maybe this year we can get a handle on murders and poverty in New Orleans; maybe. Maybe this year The National Episcopal Church will authorize same sex marriages (right now it’s up to local diocese). Maybe this year homophobia and hate will decline and tolerance and understanding will rise; maybe. Maybe this year Royal and Dauphine Streets, in Bywater and Marigny, will be paved smooth and repaired; maybe. Maybe this year a street car line will really be started on St. Claude and politics will vanish and the line will go all the way to Poland Avenue! Maybe this year we won’t have a hurricane; maybe. Maybe I or you will win the big lottery; maybe. Maybe this year will just be perfect; maybe. As unlikely as it seems a perfect year can happen even if none of the foregoing happens; even if all of the foregoing happens. It can be perfect if only fragments of our hopes and plans develop. It can be perfect. Because perfection is not found in our accomplishments. Because no matter what, we could have always done whatever it is better. Even Michelangelo, I am sure, saw the imperfections in his work. Even the best i-phone-pad-pod will not stop the occasional unanticipated delay or derailment of our schedules. Yet, it can be a perfect year. Then, with all of this unfulfilled frenzy, what might a perfect year look like? Reconciling with an estranged friend or lover makes for a perfect year. It removes an always present darkness and adds light and life to the year that was not possible before. Such reconciliation might take some time or happen in an instant and instant of grace. Realizing that with all of our short comings and for all of our errors we have profound value. Such a realization may well come as an epiphany or an awakening. Such an epiphany would make it a perfect year with darkness and per-

sonal self loathing removed; yes that would be a perfect year. As a priest I will add that this is precisely the way Jesus wants us to know ourselves – as persons with profound value and worth. Not perfect in ourselves but nonetheless of great value. A perfect year can be the one in which we find that “someone” in the midst of all the clutter. Not a toy or object to be consumed and thrown away but a life-long fulfillment – that “someone.” That would be a perfect year. It may be a year filled with fear, trepidation, even the occasional argument which makes for knowing one another. That type of special someone who gives you much and you need to give them much in return. Yes, that would make for a perfect year. Maybe one is adrift and feeling alone. Look up! See the stars in heaven not as cold suns but warm harbingers of life and know that truly you are not alone. You have value even in the universe because God has crafted you with the utmost care. If you see that starscape or wonder at the sunrise and you feel a part of it all – you are not alone. In that instant, you will have a perfect year. The perfection that I am talking about does not understand imperfection as a failure or travesty, just another aspect of who and what we are and what the world is. We live in imperfection and indeed we thrive in imperfection because when we have that instant of perfection we know it, we can see it, we can feel it, we can experience it; and it makes for a perfect year. The key is simple, have ears to hear and eyes to see. Seek those moments of perfection. Become a cause of perfection by what we do or how we respond. Seek perfection. As it was once said, “God became man so that man can become God.” Reconciliation, finding a life partner, knowing self worth and value, are only a few ways, albeit basic and fundamental ways, to have a perfect year. Our communities must seek a perfect year because we deserve it. Both individually and as a community is it so hard to find that one person that you should reconcile with? If that is possible can we not find that one community that we should reconcile with? As a person if we seek and are blessed to find a life mate; can it be much harder to bring that sense of self sacrificing love into the open and begin to show it to the world as a way to be? If we can just see the stars at night and know that we are not alone and indeed that we have value how hard can it be to begin to see others around us as having value of being the human starscape in our communities? So, let’s plan our year. Let’s prepare for the hectic pace of living. Let’s not reflect too much on what is past and focus on making this fractured and unfulfilled life – perfect. After I tagged along with Frankie Fierce and Kyle (aka Dusty Debris) to Moanalot Fontaine’s Christmas Eve bash at her house in the Marigny, which seemed the happening place this night. As always, Michael (aka Moanalot) had a wonderful celebration. I got to meet so many new people in the gay community I have never met before (I know, hard to believe). Ending my night, I went to JohnPaul’s for the Golden Age Revue hosted by Princesse Stephaney. There were a lot of people out this Christmas Eve spreading goodwill and cheer and because of this; the girls seemed to be even more on tonight than normally. After a full evening of merriment, I dragged myself home and to bed. I awoke on Christmas Day and opened presents for my babies (Rose, Lily and Dandelion). I walked them and gave them a special breakfast, then headed off to my mom’s house. What a spectacular day with my family eating, catching up, celebrating my cousin Alicia’s new engagement to this great guy Gerry and the first Christmas for my newest little cousin Daniel who I spoiled rotten with baby designer clothes. Everyone loved the food and the day just passed by so quickly. When I returned home that evening, I had a few leftovers, climbed into my pajamas and had a nice relaxing and quiet evening with my puppies on the couch watching movies. What a great Christmas. I hope everyone had a joyous and special holiday also. Now buckle your seatbelts, ladies and gentlemen, it’s about to be Mardi Gras time in New Orleans.

Tony’s Tidbits of Gay Wisdom

t’s a new year and what does 2012 have in store for you. Have you made any resolutions? Or made any plans to change things in your life? You hear doomsday preachers and people saying this is out last year on Earth, according to the Mayan calendar that ends on Dec. 21, 2012. As with Nostradamus and the nut job who has predicted the Rapture several times, the Mayans created this ancient calendar that ends this December. Really, what exactly makes them such an expert? They have been heralded as an advance race, but of course, they had their flaws like human sacrifice. That is just a minor detail. If they were so advanced, where the hell are they now? The Aztecs had a calendar, no one made a big stink when that one ended. No one has the power to know when the world will end, which I doubt it actually will. It always shocks me to think that people will not trust in miracles that happen on this Earth everyday but will follow crazies into believing the end of the world. Anyone can make predictions about our future if done in broad strokes. So I decided to make a few forecasts of my own for 2012. One or more of the Kardashians will be involved in a new reality show. A young Hollywood starlet will go to rehab. Several actors will come out as gay this year. A politician will be caught in a sordid sex scandal. There will be some sort of bad natural disaster this year. Blah, blah blah. Here are some more interesting ones. The cops will be called on someone at JohnPaul’s. A prominent local queen will find out his boy toy has been cheating on him with one of his best friend’s boy toys. A well-known drag queen in the city will go to jail for one of the following reasons: drugs, theft, or prostitution. Princesse Stephaney will once again win Bitch of the Year in the GAA’s, unless Bianca moves back to the city. And last but not least, I will undoubtedly be in the running for Hottest Mess of the Year. No matter what life has in store for us; live it to the fullest. I wish all the readers of Ambush a joyous, prosperous and happy New Year!

The Year in Review

ith the retirement of Patrick Shannon, my colleague of the previous eight seasons, and the closing, for now, of Le Chat Noir and Le Petit, gracious hosts since 2005, the Ambie Awards for Theatrical Excellence, which have raised over $7,000 for NOCCA’s Theater Department, will go on hiatus this year. Instead, I present my Top Ten+ list for 2011, comprising of those things that seemed most notable to me this year. As such, it’s highly subjective so feel free to agree or disagree—just make a New Year’s resolution to go to lots of theater in 2012! 1. The (hopefully temporary) closing of Le Chat Noir and Le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Carré—Le Petit went out with a whimper in December 2010; Le Chat went out with a bang this past summer. Much has already been written about these two esteemed venues. The bottom line is that New Orleans was much poorer without them, particularly in the fields of cabaret and musical productions. Le Petit is scheduled to re-open in the Fall of this year; let’s hope, going forward, the drama will remain on the stage, where it belongs, instead of behind the scenes. 2. The Dueling Chaperones—Within the space of a few months, New Orleans was treated to two productions of The Drowsy Chaperone. While each had its singular strengths, both were highly enjoyable. The problem was that one had already been announced for a run in autumn when a second producing entity scheduled it for a summer run. Whether one drew audiences from the other, I can’t say. But one Chaperone would probably have been enough for one season. Let’s hope, going forward, there’ll be more awareness and discussion among theaters so as to avoid such situations in the future. Unfortunately, with fewer viable shows these days, when rights do become available there’s an understandable rush to be the first to do them here; already some titles are popping up more than once for 2012. Still, there are many classic musicals that haven’t been seen in some time here which makes me wonder why some seem to be done again and again. And if that must be the case, would it be asking too much for wholesale directorial re-interpretation as is done with operas and Shakespeare?

3. The NOLA Project—This enterprising troupe has been steadily producing shows since just before Katrina, garnering 19 Ambie nominations and 5 awards, including Best Comedy of 2007 for The Lieutenant of Inishmore. But they really came into their own this year. Starting off with Ethan Coen’s Almost an Evening, the first two playlets were amusing enough but the third, Debate, stood out for acting/ directing that perfectly captured its stylized meta-theatrical writing. Then came Andrew Larimer’s exuberantly frolicsome A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the sculpture garden at the New Orleans Museum of Art, complete with a gondola in the lagoon. Continuing at NOMA, Kate Kuen’s Art featured a rotating cast of six actors in the three roles (what a great idea!) and if all the permutations were as fine as the grouping I saw, than no audience was shortchanged. Is He Dead? by Mark Twain, a co-production with UNO, presented Alex Martinez Wallace hysterically flouncing around in a dress yet had tender moments as well. And, back at NOMA, though I had my reservations about Romeo and Juliet, as did others who attended the performance I saw, others raved about it; certainly its use of the Great Hall was impressive. Starting January 12, the Projectors will be presenting Martin McDonagh’s A Behanding in Spokane at the Allways Theatre. Can’t wait! 4. The Youth of New Orleans—Each week I watch our local TV broadcasts go on and on about college, and even high school, football and other sports teams. Why can’t they give a little time to our younger thespians as well? Captain Louie (Crescent City Lights Youth Theater), Thoroughly Modern Millie (Mt. Carmel), Cats (Anthony Bean Community Theater), Rent (Southern Rep’s Youth Theater), Theophilus North (NOCCA), Spring Awakening (Delgado Community College), The Assembly Women (Tulane), In the Blood (Loyola), among many others, were all top notch productions. Sure, local schools send kids to the big leagues, but what about those who are winding up on Broadway and in film? 5. New Plays—Theater does not live by revivals alone. And, fortunately, New Orleans does not rely merely on the tried’n’true or even what drew attention in

Jim Fitzmorris’From a Long Way Off (JPAS), Reflections and Hal Clark’s Marrero Action (Anthony Bean Community Theater), Sean Patterson’s On the Air (Stage Door Canteen/National WWII Museum), Brian Fabry Dorsam’s Sarah (Skin Horse Theater) all provided audiences with the excitement of seeing something for the first time ever. And even if no one would likely call the tomfoolery of Running With Scissors’ annual Grenadine McGunkle’s Double-Wide Christmas! or Pat Bourgeois’ ongoing soap opera Debauchery (Southern Rep) “High Art”, we’re fortunate to have these homegrown, uniquely N’awlins comedies to keep us laughing. 6. New Companies—There’ve been a wave of new, ambitious production companies starting up: Skin Horse Theater (Hedwig and the Angry Inch), Neutral Ground Ensemble (Titus Andronicus), Silk Dress Productions (The Albee Season), Rising Shiners (The Weir), The Elm Theatre (Orange Flower Water), Delta Productions (Torch Song Trilogy), etc. Sometimes reaches exceeded grasps but it’s exciting to have so many new voices coming onto the local scene. 7. New Venues—In 2011, along with art galleries, the theater scene really blossomed on St. Claude. Richard Mayer’s The Shadowbox joined Dennis Monn’s AllWays as Otter’s Backyard Ballroom continued. Then there was Byrdie’s Gallery and occasional site specific works in the Marigny and Bywater. Add to these The Mid-City Theatre, The Elm Theatre in the Warehouse District (which rents out its space when not presenting its own productions) and Deutches Haus in Metairie and it is clear that, with all these folks taking a chance on live theater, there is a very vibrant scene here. 8. Beyond Orleans Parish—For some of us Quarterites (or Quarter Rats), it’s easy to forget that within a short drive there is some excellent theater available to us. There’s Rivertown Rep in Kenner (Chicago and A Chorus Line), JPAS in Westwego (The Drowsy Chaperone co-produced with Theatre 13), Actors Theatre of New Orleans in Metairie (Devil Boys from Beyond), and, a bit further afield, Slidell Little Theater (Thoroughly Modern Millie) and Cutting Edge Theater (Gypsy and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) which is housed in my favorite venue, the Attractions Salon in Slidell. No need for a visa or passport, just go! 9. NOCCA—Shows presented by NOCCA’s Drama and Musical Theater Departments are worth putting on your calendar as this year’s Theophilus North and The Secret Garden demonstrated; I’m just sorry I missed The Adding Machine there. But NOCCA’s stages are increasingly used by other entities and The NOCCA Stage Company’s annual productions, which feature faculty members as well as students, are not to be missed. Coming on the heels of last year’s Ambie-nominated Violet, The Trip to Bountiful featuring Janet Shea, Jason Kirkpatrick and Liann Pattison was heartbreaking and unforgettable. 10. Rather than ending on negative note, I’ll end on a challenge: With so much talent here, I’d like to see more collaboration among the arts here. Loyola Opera Theatre’s Les Mamelles de Tirésias emphasized “theater” as much as “opera” to charming results. The LPO’s H.M.S. Pinafore and Ben Jaffe’s Songs for My Fathers, however, could have benefitted from greater theatrical staging. Theater productions’ sets and costumes could occasionally use a boost from the city’s visual artists. What I wish for in 2012 is that all the city’s creative types reach out to each other with greater regularity so as to take full advantage of New Orleans’ special energy and originality. Here’s hoping for some sort of jazzdramadancesculpturaloperaticballetcomedy fusion in the New Year!
