All That Glitters, Carnival Jewelry from the Golden Age @ Longue Vue Gardens
L
ongue Vue Gardens is pleased to present the exhibit, All That Glitters, a fabulous treasure-trove of Carnival jewelry from the Golden Age, the dazzling period from the late 19th century to 1930. This glittering exhibit includes Rex crowns, scepters, and ducal badges, Comus Cups, and numerous krewe and court favors. Of special interest are the jewels of the 1909 Queen of Comus, Miss Emay Hart, and the crown and scepter of the 1915 Queen of the Carnival, Miss Sadie Downman. The 1911 Comus Cup and Miss Downman’s jewels are being presented for the first time in a public exhibition. Henri Schindler, Carnival historian and designer, is serving as guest curator of All That Glitters. In selecting items for the Longue Vue show, Schindler has drawn heavily from the vast Carnival archive of Tulane University, from the spectacular collection of Herbie LeBlanc, and from his own collected 1914 & 1929 Comus Cups – Photo by Jeff Rinehart
Exhibitions Focus on Southern Craft & Photography @ Ogden Museum
K
icking off the new year, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art is opening three exhibitions that celebrate craft in North Carolina, while a fourth focuses on Mississippi in the 1970s and 1980s. These exhibitions highlight the Museum’s mission of featuring art from throughout the South, bringing awareness to the region’s diverse and influential art and craft traditions. Mark Hewitt: Big-Hearted Pots: A ceramic artist who knows no boundaries, Mark Hewitt has for more than 25 years been producing ceramic pots of gargantuan beauty and size. Born in England to a family with a history in the ceramic industry, Hewitt was drawn to a more naturalistic approach in his art, embracing clean lines and austere decoration, as well as the craft traditions of North Carolina, where he lives and works. About his pots, Hewitt says, “… they break new ground while tipping their caps to the great jugs and jars from the potent pottery tradition of the South; and, while delightfully big-assed, they are also profoundly big-hearted.” Closes April 10,
2011. Richard Ritter: A Life In Glass: In his 40 years as a craft artist, North Carolinabased Richard Ritter has steadily evolved his complex approach to glass vessels. Most widely lauded for his use of the murrini process, Ritter brings a contemporary sensibility to the ancient technique, created in
works. The exhibit runs through March 13, and can be seen during Longue Vue’s museum hours, Mondays to Saturdays, 10am to 5pm and Sundays, 1 to 5pm. Viewing is free with paid admission. Partial to Home is a candid exploration of African-American culture over a ten-year period in a region of Mississippi that fiercely resists change. Many of these early black-and-white photographs were taken during the research and photography for Juke Joint, the series of color photographs for which he is widely known. Closes mid-April 2011. North Carolina Craft Now: Presented by the Center for Southern Craft and Design, this exhibition will feature glass, wood and ceramics by a number of North Carolina artists. The work shown is also for sale. Closes April 10, 2011. The Ogden Museum of Southern Art/ University of New Orleans is home to the largest and most comprehensive collection of Southern art in the world, and includes the Center for Southern Craft and
Design. Here you will find the story of the South—the old as well as the new, as told through its art, music and education programs. The museum includes Stephen Goldring Hall, which opened in 2003, and two buildings under construction and renovation: the Clementine Hunter Education Wing and the Patrick F. Taylor Library, designed by American 19th-century architect, Henry Hobson Richardson. Among the many artists represented in the museum’s collection are Benny Andrews, William Dunlap, Ida Kohlmeyer, Will Henry Stevens, Kendall Shaw and George Ohr. Frank Pizzolato Leads New Orleans' French Market Corporation
N
ew Orleans’ French Market Corporation is under new leadership. Frank Pizzolato was appointed by Mayor Mitch Landrieu and confirmed by the corporation’s board. Pizzolato replaces Kenneth Ferdinand, who resigned in July amid allegations of questionable spending. Thursday was Pizzolato’s fourth day on the job, and already the new guy in charge at the city-owned French Market acknowledged the corporation has some “real issues.” He said, “but as quickly as humanly possible, my committment is that we’re going to make things right.” An attorney and a former manager in the state’s Road Home and Hazard Mitigation grant programs, he said his first order of business will be shaking hands with everyone who pays rent. “Because ultimately that’s who we’re doing business with,” said Pizzolato. One item he said he promises to tackle is an air conditioning problem. Some French Market tenants have complained that for months, and in some cases, years, they haven’t had air conditioning even during the brutal summer months. Pizzolato said, “if there are shortcomings, or there were shortcomings on the part of sub contractors, or contractors or architects or whatever else, we are going to pursue every avenue.” He promised to have a game plan ready for the board in two weeks. Pizzolato said other priorities include reconnecting with locals, finding ways to be more accessible and making the market a shopping destination with a variety of vendors, including seafood and produce. As for produce, Pizzolato said he would meet with some of the regional producers, the regional growers, to try to get as much of that back as possible. At the same time, Pizzolato explained the market may not be the wholesale produce hub it once was, but he said he’ll work toward a business model that fits today’s economy. Pizzolato said for the first time since Katrina he expects the market will be able to use its profits in 2011 to contribute to the city’s general fund to help with operating expenses. Prior to the storm, he said the market generated a little over a million dollars to the city budget.

aton Rouge - The Friends of Magnolia Mound Plantation in association with BREC will present their 6th annual Black History Month event on Saturday, February 26 at 2pm on the grounds of the plantation at 2161 Nicholson Drive in Baton Rouge. An original dramatic production written by Oneal Isaac and Robert Wilson, the play is based on The People Can Fly, inspired by a collection of American Black Folktales by Newberry Award winning author, Virginia Hamilton. Several storytellers will entertain and educate the audience with tales ranging from fanciful animal tales to more heavy fare detailing the struggles of slaves
and how the stories not only reflected their despair and sorrow but provided an outlet of creativity and hope for them. The stories told will highlight cultural elements present at that time that will allow the past to inform the present. The Narrator will weave the stories together with historical context that is also pertinent in today’s world. Robert Wilson will also produce and act in the production. Oneal Isaac will direct and act in the presentation. Oneal Isaac is an award-winning actor, storyteller and playwright. He has been the recipient of an Artist Fellowship in Theatre from the Louisiana Division of the Arts. He was also Arts Ambassador for the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge and was honored by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities with a Special Humanities Award. He has worked in motion pictures, professional and community theater, improvisational comedy and public radio. He worked extensively as the Assistant Director with PRIME TIME Reading Time, the LEH Family Literacy Program, now used throughout the United States. Oneal has been involved in each of the five previous Black History Month productions. Robert Wilson is the Assistant Director for the Louisiana Center for the Book and was involved in the planning of the LA Book Festival since its inception. His true passion, however, is for the theater and he has been acting in and around the Baton Rouge area for over 20 years. The majority of his performances have been in numerous productions for Playmakers of Baton Rouge, most recently as Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, which is probably one of his most favorite roles to date. Wilson has appeared in many roles at the Baton Rouge Little Theater, such as Andrew Wyke in Sleuth, John Hancock in 1776, Ernst Ludwig in Cabaret and John Flanders Kitteridge in Six Degrees of Sepa-

rench Quarter Festivals, Inc. announces the addition of Thursday to the 2011 French Quarter Festival presented by Capital One Bank. 2011 dates are set for Thursday, April 7 through Sunday, April 10. According to Marci Schramm, Executive Director of French Quarter Festivals, Inc., “We are extremely honored that our festival has been embraced by so many people over the past few years following Hurricane Katrina. Each year, we continue to make operational changes that are designed to greatly improve the quality of the festival experience for everyone. Tragedy Leads to New Protections for LGBT Families

ashington – On Tuesday, January 18, federal regulations regarding patients’ hospital visitation rights will go into effect. These new regulations require all hospitals participating in Medicaid and Medicare programs – virtually every hospital in the country – to permit patients to designate visitors of their choosing and prohibit discrimination in visitation based on a number of factors, including sexual orientation and gender identity. Moved by the tragic story of an LGBT family – Janice Langbehn, Lisa Pond and their children – who were kept apart as Lisa lay dying in a Miami hospital, Presi-
dent Obama issued a presidential memorandum in April 2010 directing the Department of Health and Human Services to develop regulations protecting hospital visitation rights. HRC has prepared a Hospital Visitation Guide. “LGBT people experience discrimination in many aspects of their lives, but it is perhaps at its worst during times of crisis,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “We thank President Obama and HHS Secretary Sebelius for recognizing the hardships LGBT people face and taking this important step toward ensuring that no one will be turned away from a partner’s hospital bedside again.” In addition to working with the Obama administration on the hospital visitation issue, HRC administers the Healthcare Equality Index, an annual survey of healthcare policies and practices related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender patients and their families. Vicki Weeks
E
ach month, Ambush Magazine will spotlight a person that has made outstanding achievements in the gay community. The person for January is someone who I have known for several years. I met Vicki Weeks through my involvement in many fundraisers for Belle Reve, but I never realized what a truly remarkable woman she is or how she has helped shape the landscape of this city, for both the straight and gay communities. Vicki was born in Mansfield, Louisiana, which is approximately 45 miles southwest of Shreveport. However, she was raised in South Louisiana, in Franklin to be exact, and enjoyed growing up there. She was an outstanding athlete and majored in Health, Physical Education and Recreation at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. After graduation, she started coaching women’s volleyball and basketball there and began going for her masters’ degree. With nine hours left for her degree, a job offer came available to her that would change her life. She was offered the position of Assistant Intramural Director of the University of New Orleans in 1974, which she accepted. At that time there wasn’t a woman’s basketball program and Vicki decided there needed to be one. But this was not an easy task; she had to fight the administration, as well as the some of the male coaches and students. The team had to practice in the gym from 10pm to midnight because that was the only time she was allowed to have the gym, by her male counterparts. She received no pay to coach these girls and there was no money given to support the program. Any funds they needed would have to be raised by them. She was also harassed and labeled a militant feminist. Her boldness to stand up in the face of opposition would eventually cost Vicki her job. “I could have just walked away anytime and still stayed at UNO, but when you fight for something you believe in, you cannot just back away when the going gets hard. I stood by my guns, lost my job, but the women’s basketball program is still there today and thriving,” Weeks says. After coaching for ten years, she came to major crossroads in her life. What do I do now? So she went into sales and became the first female sales representative for Borden’s Food Company, in the State of Louisiana. Soon after, she opened her own snack food distribution business that catered to South Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. During this time period, Vicki had another wonderful thing happen in her life. She met her partner Michele in 1990 and on December 13th of 2010, they celebrated their
20th anniversary. How they met was a funny story, Vicki had gone to the movies at Lakeside with some friends during the early afternoon, then afterwards went for drinks. They went to the Blue Odyssey, a lesbian bar located in Metairie. Michele was seated at the bar in a business suit. They chatted briefly and Vicki gave her number to her. It was not until three months later, that Michele called and invited Vicki to lunch at the Macy’s deli in New Orleans Centre. Vicki admitted she had almost forgotten what Michele looked like since so much

Williams was born in Columbus, Miss., on March 26, 1911, but spent most of his childhood in St. Louis. On December 26, 1938, a then-27-year-old Williams arrived in New Orleans, a city that fascinated and inspired the young writer. Even after he moved away, his devotion to New Orleans continued throughout his lifetime. Williams said New Orleans was his “favorite city in America” and that his “happiest years were there.” “Williams drew from his own life experience to create the characters in his plays. The personalities that Williams created became archetypes that transcend time and place,” said Cave. “Hirschfeld was able to capture the universality of Williams’s characters.” Hirschfeld was the foremost chronicler of Williams’s productions on and off Broadway. His drawings, distinguished by a signature linear calligraphic style, translate these performances into works of art that have become, in the words of co-curator and Hirschfeld archivist David Leopold, “the lingua franca of generations of actors and audiences.” Hirschfeld said his contribution was to take the character—created by the playwright and portrayed by the actor—and reinvent it for the reader. Visitors will quickly identify many of the actors—including Alec Baldwin, Marlon Brando, Richard Burton, Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, Jessica Lange, Paul Newman, Kathleen Turner, and Uta Hagen—whose portrayals of Williams’s characters were immortalized by Hirschfeld. Items from The Collection supplement the Hirschfeld drawings to present a cohesive portrait of the playwright and his life, legacy and influences. Pieces displayed include an original Desire streetcar sign box from 1935; the diary of Edwina Dakin Williams, Tennessee Williams’s mother; movie posters; souvenirs and much more. Home to the largest private collection of Tennessee Williams-related material in the world, The Collection’s holdings include signed first editions, correspondence to and from Williams, his family members and friends, and manuscripts of unpublished poetry, screenplays and short stories. “Drawn to Life: Al Hirschfeld and the Theater of Tennessee Williams” is on view through April 3 at The Historic New Orleans Collection’s Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres Street. spotlight feature ...from 14 time had passed, so she situated herself at the bar and looked in the large mirror before her at all the people who entered. But the moment Michele walked into the place, she knew it was her and that first date lasted 36 hours. After ten years in sales, Vicki began to yearn for something new. She was good in sales, but she felt that it was not her true calling. So she decided that she needed to volunteer somewhere; maybe that would help her. But where would she do this? So that same evening she made the decision to volunteer, she sat at home with Michele, flipping the television stations and came across a show on the public access channel. Loretta Mims’ television show, A Krewe Production was interviewing a woman named Judith Chassaignac, who was the then Executive Director of Belle Reve. During the interview, Judith said they needed volunteers. It seemed like fate; so the following day, Vicki called Judith and started volunteering at Belle Reve, which was in 1997. Every Friday, from 10am to 2pm, Vicki volunteered her time at Belle Reve. After about nine months of volunteering, it was January of 1998, and Vicki asked to be nominated to the Board of Directors. It was in October of that same year that Judith left her position for personal reasons; and it was decided that Vicki would step in temporarily, until a new director was hired. The first day she came into the facility, in the capacity of intermediate Executive Director, she had a life-altering realization, “That everything she had ever done in her life, had led her to this position. She had found her passion once again, she was helping other people. God had answered her prayers, her life was back. She had a purpose and her mission was clear: to secure the future financial security of Belle Reve. At the end of the year, she went to the board and applied for the full-time position as Executive Director; and on January 17, 1999, she became the official Executive Director of Belle Reve. Now, Vicki was faced with a new destiny, with new challenges she would have to face. But she had faith, which has been a driving factor of her entire life. She had a vision in 2000, and in 2010, Belle Reve has become the facility she has always dreamed it would be. Belle Reve was opened in March of 1993. It is part of Shelter Resources, Inc., which was created by David Mesler, Jan Vick and Peter Drago. These three individuals were tired of watching so many of their friends die and they wanted to do something about it; hence they created Belle Reve. They bought the house from its owner and with a lot of sweat equity, they got it opened. A year later, Belle Esprit, their four-apartment facility, opened. After operating for eleven more years, Hurricane Katrina came to town in 2005; and both of these facilities needed to be renovated. This was followed by the opening of Belle Grace, the cinderblock warehouse that in the 70’s was a limousine service. Today, Belle Grace is another group home, operated much like the Belle Reve house. They were able to renovate all three of these buildings, with funding from two HUD federal grants, one called HOPWA (Housing Opportunities for People With AIDS) and one called SHP (Shelter Housing Program), along with monies from several different national AIDS founda-
tions, such as the MAC AIDS Fund and the National AIDS Fund. Other organizations such as Friday Night Before Mardi Gras and other local donations were also used. Now, Belle Reve has 20 employees, more than they have ever had before. They house 15 individuals and 4 families, for a total of 25 people. Only about 15% to 20% of the people staying in the facilities are actually ill. Today, the new medications for HIV/AIDS has made a significant difference in the quality of life for people living with this disease. But, for people that are ill, there is medication monitoring, education and adherence, along with assistance with activities of daily living and three meals per day, all performed by Certified Nursing Assistants. However, most of the residents of the facilities are people that come from a homeless situation and face mental health and substance abuse issues. Belle Reve has several different programs to help these individuals; one major program is the ‘Harm Reduction’ Substance Abuse program, which was started in California. This program is funded by a HUD federal grant called HOPWA/SPNS (Housing Opportunity for Persons With AIDS / Special Projects of National Significance). What this program does is give people more chances and time, to get better. It is a goal-oriented program, with the ultimate objective, of being totally abstinence. However, there is a “no tolerance” policy on the grounds, which means that if drugs or alcohol is found anywhere on the facility, that person is immediately removed from the house. Another Belle Reve program is the ‘Psycho-Social Support’ Program, which is funded through another federal grant called the Ryan White Grant. This group therapy program targets certain groups of people living with HIV and AIDS. This form of therapy realizes that people may have a better time understanding and relating to others, in their similar circumstance. A third Belle Reve program is a ‘Life Skills Training’ Program, which helps these individuals get the skills they need to live successfully independent. Not only do they learn basic abilities to get by, such as washing clothes, getting organized, financial budgeting, looking for jobs, filling out job applications, etc.; but also helps them take a look at their lives to try and determine what they want to do with the ‘rest of their lives’. The first ninety days of this program is a probationary period, which means that they have to learn how to live in a community setting and determine whether they need a part-time or full-time job or if they need to learn a new skill for a new type of job. By the ninety-first day, each resident must have a full or part-time job or be enrolled in some type of schooling. The next ninety to one hundred eighty days, people are taught to start saving-up for a place to live; and learn how to achieve their ultimate goal, of moving into their own place. After sitting with Vicki Weeks for this interview, I realized that I genuinely never knew this extraordinary person or how much she has given of herself to the gay community. If there is one thing she would say that would sum up her philosophy, it is that every single challenge is a “faith walk”. There are real heroes in our midst and we never realize it. "Just a little history in preparation for a great New Year!"
A
nother year has come and gone and Mobile has once again proved that it just keeps moving up on the charts of great places to enjoy whether you are gay or not. The gay community in Mobile has grown leaps and bounds and offers such a great variety of bars that have so much to offer in the form of entertainment. Mobile also offers wonderful gay friendly hotels, bed and breakfasts, incredible restaurants and many tourist attractions to fit almost anyone’s lifestyle and interests. Our Pride festival takes place in April... this year on April 29, 30 and May 1. Mobile Alabama Pride continues to grow and is one awesome celebration for the GLBT community. It includes daytime events in downtown Mobile’s Historic Bienville Square with vendors from all across the country. The Pride celebration also offers a wonderful “Mardi Gras like” parade with fabulous floats and many different bars and organizations joining in to celebrate the pride of the south throughout our Gulf Coast area. It also offers a wonderful array of entertainment from local talent to national and internationally acclaimed recording artists. In past years we have enjoyed artists such as Josh Zuckerman, Cynthia Manley, Bonnie Pointer of the Pointer Sisters, Abigail, Kristine W, twotime Grammy Award winning Jennifer Holliday and many more. The three day long Mobile Alabama Pride Festival is definitely an event not to be missed so you should mark your calendars now and start making those hotel arrangements. Kudo’s go out the the Board of Directors and all the volunteers for the incredible job that they continue to do with our Festival each year. 2010 also brought about quite a few changes in our community. As many people do not know, Mobile is the original home of Mardi Gras and the oldest annual carnival celebration in America having begun in 1703, 15 years before New Orleans was founded in 1718. Because of the growth within our gay community we are now very proud to have two gay Mardi Gras organizations (or mystic organizations) and therefore two fabulous gay Mardi Gras balls. There are over 40 mystic organizations in Mobile, with many parties, balls and parades that span over a multi-week time frame and the streets of the city are packed for weeks with all of these fun filled events. The Order of Osiris will be holding their 30th Annual Ball “Thirty and Dirty” this year on Friday, February 11 at the Civic Center. Congratulations on 30 spectacular years!!! The Krewe of Pheonix will be holding their 2nd Annual Ball “Tributes” this year on Friday, February 4 at Fort Whiting Armory. Congratulations! Also, emceeing the Thursday and Saturday shows as well as hosting the hilarious and fun Tuesday night bingo is Mobile’s very own Miss Gay Pride and Miss B-Bob’s, Jawakatema Davenport. B-Bob’s also offers you great guest entertainers throughout the year such as many world renowned drag performers from RuPaul’s drag race (ie; Bebe Zahara Benet, Pandora Boxx, Nina Flowers), Australia’s Drag Diva Courtney Act, Miss Gay Florida Amy Demilo, former Miss Gay Universe Candi Stratton and many, many more. Across the parking lot from B-Bob’s and Gabriel’s you will find downtown Mobile’s newest bar, Bacchus. It is downtown Mobile’s only smoke free bar and offers videos and a patio for smoking customers with an outdoor pool table. In 2010, Bacchus was purchased by Leigh and Traci. You can find them on FaceBook, but
because they are so new and their website is not up yet, I do not have a lot of info about their schedule of events. Keep tuned in for more info. In midtown just minutes from downtown Mobile there is The Midtown Pub. They offer Sunday Brunch with Pro Football, Karaoke on Tuesday’s, Amateur male dancers on Wednesday, dancing on Friday and Saturday nights and college football on Saturday evenings. Honoring the Past & Looking to the Future
N
ew year always brings to mind the future, and occasionally the present, as in ‘I am going to the gym’ or ‘I will NOT eat the King cake’. I have however spent a lot of time thinking about the past just lately, and especially the special role we all have in keeping alive those who live within us, and no longer live in the world. Over the years I have encountered A LOT of death, maybe a hundred and fifty funerals, six suicides of those dear to me, a spell as a hospice chaplain tending and befriending those close to death and several close encounters with my own mortality. This could be depressing, but instead, it has become a matter of PRIVELAGE to me. For some of those departed I am the only one left to mourn them and remember them. When I say their names I may be the only person on Earth left to speak their names. Brian Smith, Hilda Vale, Ivy Bunker, Dolly Button, Mrs. Firth, Mr. and Mrs. Godliman - all people who lived sometimes extraordinary lives, but with no-one left to tell their stories. I am beginning to write the story of my life as it interacts with these precious and extraordinary souls. The first chapter I have begun is titled ‘My life with Brian’, and I thought I would tell some of his story in this column, as it is sufficiently colorful to preclude publication in more conservative magazines! I first met Brian at a cheesy gay night in 1987 in Exeter, a city in the rural Southwest of England. We were allowed our weekly blast of freedom on a Monday night, and I had just started attending, as I had moved out of the family home after coming out, and was living in a room in the city. Brian was easily the most exotic thing I had ever seen, his mother was from Belize, he was golden skinned, lean and goodlooking, as well as being morally bankrupt and exotic in behavior as well as origin. He was from a very difficult family background, one of seven children, all of whom were gay and lesbian, and their mother – Consuelo was universally known as ‘can swallow’ by family and friends alike. She had come over from Belize (or British Honduras as it had been) in the sixties to find a better life. She found Brian’s father, who exploited her outrageously by driving her around building sites in South
Devon servicing construction workers on a mattress in the back of a Ford Van. Brian was abused as a kid, and brought up in children’s homes, so that by the time I met him he was fascinating, but seriously damaged. Brian’s life made wonderful anecdotes but was hard to live with, on one occasion he bribed a psychiatric nurse at a hospital he was being treated at for depression with the offer of sex, got riotously drunk with him and cavorted down the main street of Torquay sitting in a shopping cart singing showtunes! The nurse was dismissed, Brian moved on. He used to make spoof porno movies with names like ‘gymslip jamboree’ and ‘front bottom fandango’ (front bottom in England is baby talk for vagina) with him in bad drag performing half hearted sex acts with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth and a bottle of gin in his hand. This used to amuse him immensely; his main claim to fame was that he could smoke a cigarette from a highly unusual orifice. He had an imaginary Aunt – ‘Aunty Glad’ who he used to blame whenever he turned up late, or whenever money went missing. Brian moved in with an elderly queen called Leslie Vinnicombe, a local florist, who sported an enormous blonde bouffant hairdo, and who lived in a white and gold apartment filled to the brim with Ostrich feathers. Leslie’s only daughter was to be married, and he foolishly took along Brian; at the reception Brian went up to the groom’s father and asked if it was true that all fat guys had small dicks (!), the father punched him out and Brian fled, to call Leslie at 4am, naked as a jaybird from a telephone booth on the other side of town with no recollection of the evening at all. Eventually, Brian moved to London, and was proud to be the only known person ever thrown out of the roughest hustler bar in Soho - he was turning tricks for free in the cellar bathroom, and the other hustlers complained that he was ruining business! Eventually time and tide caught up with Brian, his drinking became habitual, and the sadness of his childhood never left him. At 33 he found copies of his childhood social workers reports, and discovered the true scope of the abuse he suffered – he had been found as a toddler with cigarette burns all over him, dirty and neglected, and as he looked the truth in the eye he

Recapping a Night Cap
R
ecently Ty and Kenny threw their annual end of the year party on Wednesday, December 29th. This year marked “The Last Loft Party” as the couple is ready to move into their newly renovated house. If you happen to be invited to one of these annual parties, I highly suggest that you take them up on their offer. This year’s party had its doubts when as the final hours approached Acadiana suffered from a torrential downpour and a flash flood. Some guests were given piggy-back rides to the door in order
to keep their leather shoes from being ruined. Oh the horror of such things! Such a sacrifice only proves that Acadiana will never allow a party to die. As Ty expressed to me over the phone, “The party must go on!” And on it did continue as party guests were greeted with warm holiday welcomes, endless booze (that is unless someone hides the vodka), wonderful hors d’oeuvres, and gumbo that was perfect for the cold rainy evening. The rooms and terrace area were filled with friendly cheer and warm conversations, items that make any holiday party a success. As coats and wet umbrellas piled into the spare bedroom, it wasn’t hard to take note the quality and quantity of people who made it their goal to be a part of a special evening. Many thanks go out to Ty and Kenny for opening their home each year and throwing a very successful party. On a side note, a little bird told me that the alleged "vodka smuggler" is sorrowful for his or her actions. Some of us may or may not remember how that particular night ended but it was similar to any other Friday or Saturday night. Maybe not just a Friday or Saturday night but possibly any other week night, just pick one. Picture yourself at your random downtown bar… Last call is announced and then the lights flicker on. Bartenders are frantically yelling for you to close your tab while door workers are violently rushing you into the streets. There’s nothing else like closing time. Or is there? There seems to be this “secret society” of after-parties that often occur. There will never be an announcement or a flyer on a wall in a bathroom stall. Either you received the drunken text from
a friend or you didn’t. You may have even been yelled directly in the ear the time and place while loud music covers the dance floor. You know, one of those times you pretend to know what the person is saying and you simply nod. Bottom line is, try your best to get into the know because you’re missing a great time, so I hear. Cut to a party that can last well into the next day and filled with events that will be discussed over the course of the following week. Just keep in mind some of the rules that need to be setup. 1: Bring something besides just yourself! Try to contribute. Bring anything regardless if it’s alcohol to a mixer, bring something that you feel can contribute. 2: Be respectful! If you want to be invited to another after-party then make sure that you respect the property of others. Make sure it’s okay to invite more people to the party. Do not damage other people’s property and clean up your mess. 3: Do not create drama! Do your best to respect the emotions of others and do not try to create tensions where they do not need to be created. 4: Last and MOST important: DO NOT STEAL! I cannot believe that I even must make this known. It has happened in the past and it’s sad to know that a friend has stolen from you. Don’t do it, girl, just don’t!

he Mystic Krewe of Satyricon is proud to host a night of amazing music by one of the fastest rising stars on the cabaret scene. Todd Murray, cabaret’s newest leading man, is bringing his sultry voice to New Orleans on Sunday, February 13 at Le Chat Noir. This devastatingly handsome baritone will present his new show Croon which is sure to have gay hearts swooning throughout the night. Murray was born in a little farming community in Pennsylvania where the idea of making a profession as a singer was remote and unheard of unless you became a music teacher. He sang as a child in chorus and at school plays, learning

many of the older standards from his aunt who played stride piano. He attended college in Pennsylvania and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and business. Music must have been in his genetic makeup because he thrived. He joined the volunteer USO group “Re-Creation,” traveling around the nation doing fairs, concerts, VA hospitals and other music venues. They did a sacred show for churches which included contemporary Christian music and gospel and a secular one of American pop and country songs. After graduation he performed regularly at Opryland USA and six months at Disney Tokyo as the American Western Singer. After that stint, he moved to New York. He lied about his waiter experience to get a job to pay the bills. He got his Actor’s Equity Card and got some roles off Broadway and was in the first touring company of the Broadway show The Secret Garden. The problem was he had a lower voice so he was relegated to roles that are usually played by older men. So he gave up on musical theatre and struck out on his own. His life then took a different turn altogether, he opened his own wholesale bread bakery in Los Angeles supplying products to Trader Joe’s, Starbucks and Whole Foods. o I have this friend that we shall refer to as Daniel. Daniel and I recently decided to venture into River Ranch and pay a visit to Wine Loft. A typical Thursday night setting, lights are dimmed to set a classy tone as a live band plays in the background. Daniel and I sit at the bar, pretending not to take note of others around us, and sip on a glass of red wine. Daniel takes time to lift his glass, swirl the wine around, and set it down and immediately picks up his phone and frantically types a text message. He sets his phone down, picks up his glass of wine, tilts it towards his lips and before the red can reach his lips his phone goes off again. He again sets his glass down and frantically types another text message. With a sigh I can tell that he’s about to share something. “So I started talking to this guy who I met while downtown the other night, well we didn’t actually meet downtown per se.” Now this is my turn to take a sip of wine and attempt to get what I call Emergency Drunk because with that statement from Daniel I know that I am in for an interesting ride that I must painfully endure. I quickly utter my response, “Okay, so what is the catch this time?” Daniel’s eyes widen when he blurts out, “It’s the guy I met last time I was in NOLA when I went to the bathhouse.” Forgetting my surroundings I yell, “WHAT!?!?”
Murray returned to music. He has released two CD’s – When I Sing Low and Stardust and Swing. He recorded the latter one at Capitol Records in Hollywood in Studio A. This location carried a lot of meaning with it since it was where some of the greatest singers of our time such as Frank Sinatra, Lou Rawls, Judy Garland and Nat King Cole recorded their albums. Murray also uses acoustic instruments in his sessions, which is somewhat unheard of in the industry, preferring the lower register sound they produce. His first CD was named one of the top ten vocal albums of 2002 and recently he was named one of New York’s Top Cabaret Acts of 2010 by Edge New York. I was lucky enough to get a phone interview with this very busy man who is now bi-coastal splitting his time between Los Angeles and New York. TL: Can you tell me about your show? TM: This show was quite a challenge. It is the first time I have ever done a themed show. So I had to decide what is crooning? Is it all ballads, but I found that is not the case. Crooning is singing intimately to the microphone. TL: How long have you been on tour with this show? TM: I performed the show twice at the end of last year in Palm Springs and at the Metropolitan Room in New York. So this is the first show of the new year and the start of my season. TL: Have you ever been to New Orleans and has our rich musical heritage been an influence for you? TM: This is my first time in New Orleans and I am looking forward to coming. I like the music of the Marsalis family Daniel quickly responds with a “YES!!!” and sets the story up. Apparently Daniel spent a late night evening in a bathhouse a few months ago and we can all use our imagination as to the events that occurred. Daniel was downtown a week ago and as any other sex-craved twenty-something year old gay male would do, he loaded up his account on Grindr. Another person nearby, we shall call Alex, begins to message Daniel. Of course the two initially do not know who they’re talking to because the two have simple torso profile pictures and are much quicker to exchange dickpics than they are headshots. Who hasn’t been in that situation before, right? Yeah…right… So the two are quick to be hot and heavy and in the mood and plan to meet in a downtown alley. An alley in the downtown, you know this just can’t go wrong. Isn’t this how horror movies start? Fifteen minutes pass and Daniel heads to the spot that the two agreed on. It’s a very secluded, dimly lit area with fences on one side and damp brick walls with water from the rusted gutters above. Daniel stands for about two minutes when Alex finally walks up. So as one may ask, what’s the problem now? Of course as Daniel’s mind would embrace

I take American standards and give them new life with fresh and innovative arrangements. TL: What can people expect from your show? TM: It is a great walk through the decades. They will hear everyone from Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby to Elvis and Lou Rawls. There will be a variety of different music incorporating these timeless classics with some of my own new music. I have no interest in living too much in the past. You will hear these standards freshly interpreted in a romantic style. It all boils down to sex, people want to feel serenaded. After speaking with Todd, I cannot wait to be in the front row for this show. This man has sex appeal and a few surprises in store for the New Orleans audience. O
nce again we usher in a new year and there are plenty of resolutions being made. One of mine is to catch up on my reading list. My book of the month for January is one of my favorite authors, Janet Evanovich, and her newest Stephanie Plum novel, Siz-

My response is, “Yes, Daniel, it’s a sign that you’re a big whore because I assume that by now the ratio of those who have been with versus those you have not been with have finally caught up, congratulations.” Daniel wasn’t so quick to agree with my response but he continued to stand his ground and I tried my best to respect him. Could such a chain of events simply lead to a romantic relationship? I mean sure, it happened in the movie Trick but that is a simple movie. Or is this just another random sexual encounter and that’s all it is meant to be. The two of us continue to debate over our glass of wine and I believe four bottles later we decided to simply agree to disagree because that’s what friends do. What do you think?

under the gaydar ...from 36 zling Sixteen. This latest entry into the series finds Stephanie once again in over her head. Her cousin Vinnie, owner of Vincent Bail Bonds and her boss, has run up a substantial gambling debt. And local mobster Bobby Sunflower is not pleased, so he has kidnapped Vinnie and will dispatch him if the money is not paid. Unfortunately for Vinnie, and the rest of the bail bonds staff, no one really cares if he lives or dies. So it is up to Stephanie to save her cousin and the jobs of her and her co-workers without getting herself killed in the process. With her on and off again boyfriend Joe Morelli and the ever sexy Ranger on her side, she manages to find Vinnie and save him. But can she keep him safe. As always, this book is filled with Stephanie’s screwball antics with Lulu, the ex-ho now turned bounty hunter assistant. Throw in an alligator named Mr. Jingles, a large contingent of hobbit role players in town for a convention and a lucky bottle and you have the makings of an enjoyable read. I love the way Evanovich spins her story. As a reader, she immediately draws me in to the characters and their situation. She keeps you interested with zany oddballs, funny circumstances and enjoyable romantic dalliances. Sizzling Sixteen is a great way to kick off the New Year. New Year: New Royalty
W
ith the onset of this year’s Mardi Gras season comes the crowning of the new royalty of the krewes. I find that this is always an exciting time as the anticipation of the gay carnival balls draws near. Two gay carnival krewes just recently announced their royalty. First the Mystic Krewe of Satyricon had their 12th Night Ball at K’ Joe’s restaurant located in the heart of the French Quarter on St. Louis Street on January 8. It was a huge success with lots of glamorous guests dressed in tuxedos and gowns as they dined and danced the night away. The culmination of the evening came when we announced King and Queen Satyricon IX and we chose the King and Queen of 12th Night. Mary Metoyer, King Satyricon VIII Paul’s mother, was chosen as Queen of 12th Night. She will join the wonderful Pat Johnson from the Lords of Leather who is now King of 12th Night as they get to do a famous promenade at the ball. Reigning supreme at this year’s ball is King Elect Kent Roby and Queen Elect Sadie Shepard (aka Brian Peterson), who like past royalty will absolutely shine. The theme of Satyricon is “When You Wish Upon A Star: The Mickey Ball” and will be held on Friday, February 25 at the Sugar Mill. Doors open at 7pm and the ball starts at 8pm. They hosted a festive evening with great entertainers such as Raven Kennedy, Legacy and Monica St. Clair. The President of Mwindo, Joe McCrory, was the emcee and kept the night lively. After a night of great performances the time had come for Captain Darrell of POS to announce the new royalty. King and Queen
POS VIII are Kerry Duskin and Kendtrell Short. Congratulations to these krewes and all of this year’s incoming royalty.
Two Step Into A New Year

f you like country music, have a got the place for you. Every Tuesday night at JohnPaul’s is country line dancing and a swinging good time. Not only is it a great way to stay in shape, but a wonderful way to meet new people. Do not worry if you don’t know the moves, their fabulous dance instructor Gary is on hand to teach you all the steps. From line dancing to the two step, you will quickly become fast on your feet. This is also not a place to be shy about coming alone. The people are friendly and willing to dance, so before long you will have many new friends. And how knows you may meet a pardner to call your own. And once you got your moves down you can try them out on a larger scale when JohnPaul’s hosts their Country Dance nights which is every month. The next one will be Feb 19th which also happens to be the night of Krewe Du Vieux. The remaining dates are as follows: March 12, April 9, May 7, June 4, July 16, August 13, September 10, October 8, November 5 and December 3. The dancing starts at 9pm and goes to 1am. He stood there for a moment and smiled. “Honey, I am sorry too. I will come down,” and with that he left Cathy standing on the balcony alone. “Are you kidding me? This crazy man drags me at gunpoint to a balcony to throw
me off and no one does anything. That is it, I am through with male gigilos. From now on I am going to meet men the old fashioned way. At a bookstore or a public restroom,” Cathy told the crowd below and turned on her heel. Fantastic Mister Fox at the Contemporary Arts Center through Feb. 20
S
imply put, New Orleans has never seen anything quite like HI-YAH! Produc tions’ Fantastic Mister Fox. Adapted from Roald Dahl’s tale of derring-do among the vulpine set, this is no ordinary play where you sit in a seat and watch actors perform. Rather, Director/Designer Arthur Mintz has created an environment of burrows and tunnels through which an audience crawls and scurries from one brilliantly conceived space to the next.

Along the way, we are treated to vast vistas of farmland, various rooms of the Fox Family’s den, and assorted storage & processing areas of the mean farmers who hope to capture the chicken- and cider-thieving Mr. Fox. Though headlights are given out at the start, they are collected after intermission leaving you to scamper and belly along in virtual darkness; at one point I took a wrong turn and found myself on all fours in a dead end. But how exciting it is to grapple with gooseberry roots and be attacked by an opossum. Adapted by Mintz with Bryan Spitzfaden, the script’s sly humor doesn’t condescend to the audience’s youth (this is geared to children...of all ages) but is witty and entertaining. A melancholic side to the story emerges as themes of aging and the loss of one’s abilities are layered throughout the narrative, bathing the tale in an autumnal glow without ever becoming heavy-handed. The uber-talented Mintz has created an array of life-size puppets that are brought to empathetic life by four adroit puppeteers (Josh Hano, Milissa Orzolek, KateGrace Bauer, Jacques Duffourc) whose expressions are in perfect sync with Spitzfaden and Rene Duffourc’s ingenious sound design that allows the prerecorded dialogue to seem as though it is emanating from the puppets themselves. Voicing Mr. Fox with knavish charm is the preternaturally cool drummer of Astral Project, Johnny Vidacovich. Mrs. Fox is articulated with motherly concern by the real life Mrs. Vidacovich, Deborah. Oskie Creech does well in a variety of smaller roles, and I especially enjoyed broadcaster
Lee Zurik’s cameo as Flea Zurik. Spitzfaden, with his manic appeal, is an engaging Narrator who gets the audience enthused and moving from place to place. One might question Dahl’s making a hero out of a critter who steals the goods of others, even if the farmers are portrayed as cantankerous ol’ varmints. I suspect this was some sort of allegory about capitalism and socialism but this fun-filled version of Fox mostly banishes such deep thoughts. The only real quibble I have with the show is the chicken-nuggetization of a Susan Boyle-inspired puppet; it seems like a low blow at a perfectly decent and talented person when there are so many other nabobs in the world who’d be better served up as little tasty treats. Fantastic Mister Fox has been extended through Mardi Gras at the CAC. Anyone who cares about theater at its most imaginative or, for that matter, about humanity and life’s challenges presented with warmth and sophisticated artistry, must not miss it.
Captain Louie at the Ty Tracy Theatre through Jan. Present
I
n Captain Louie, a children’s musical based on Ezra Jack Keats’ The Trip, when young Louie feels lonely and friendless in his new neighborhood, he takes flight in his favorite toy airplane and transports himself back to his old home and his pals there. Eventually returning, he discovers that his new neighbors are a pretty friendly bunch of kids when given half a chance. >From this simple story, librettist Anthony Stein and composer Stephen (Pippin, Godspell, Wicked) Schwartz have fashioned a feel-good musical that, like Fantastic Mister Fox, doesn’t condescend to its young audience. Crescent City Lights Youth Theater is currently presenting the local premiere of this absolutely charming work. Director Troy R. Poplous guided his cast to give assured performances. Jamani Andrews’ choreography is inventive and appropriate for this age group (8-15) neither being too simple nor too complicated. The voices of the 15 member cast are still developing so, in the larger numbers, a certain rawness sometimes prevailed, but they all sang well, on key and enthusiastically. If some of the lyrics are occasionally lost, hey, that happens even on Broadway. Tucker Godbold conveyed an innate sweetness as Louie. He may not look like
a typical leading man but he was perfect for this part of an outsider whose subtle charisma enables him to become an insider again. Among Louie’s friends, Azmar Eli’s roguish yet laid back charm marks him as potentially another Will Smith. Tyson Ford cagily displayed his natural cuteness but never overplayed it. Mitzi Zitler was very strong as Louie’s reluctant (as all youngsters are) love interest. Ambie Award-nominee Julie Montalbano was equally good as her best friend. And Johan Lowe, as the new kid in Louie’s old neighborhood, exhibited verve and great comic timing. While all of these young actors were fine individually, they worked especially well together as a group in such ensemble numbers as Act One’s finale, the exuberant Looza on the Block. On Opening Night, Councilperson Jackie Clarkson presented the cast with a special proclamation from the city and deservedly so. Anyone reading this who has kids or grandkids would be well-advised to take them to Captain Louie this weekend for entertainment the entire family can enjoy.
daffy as Sister Amnesia, captures Goggin’s wacky humor as she attempts a series of mystifying magic tricks; she also does full justice to her musical numbers. Meshuggah-Nuns! is not without some pluses. Lindsey Price’s choreography provides witty fun as she incorporated some of Jerome Robbins’ classic moves from Fiddler. Alan Payne’s musical direction is expert as always. And it was nice to see Tyler P. Robinson, so fine as the Wolf and a Prince in last summer’s Into the Woods, get into the act with a few cameos. But with all the talent in the city, one wonders why Director “Uncle” Wayne Daigrepont couldn’t have assembled a stronger cast. Perhaps rehearsals during the Holiday Season kept some from taking up the cloth? Still, if the campy humor and Sondheim references are more Marigny than Westwego, the audience—Catholic, Jewish or otherwise—seemed to enjoy the show, including two nuns who gave it a “thumbs up” on the way out. Can’t argue with the real thing, eh?
Meshuggah-Nuns! at the Teatro Wego! Theatre through Jan. 23
began to sink into despair. Brian hung himself one day in his flat in Kentish Town, London. I think he meant to be discovered before he died, but the friend he telephoned was stuck in traffic, and when he arrived Brian was past help. Brian was a character of immense humor and he fascinated everybody. He found joy in ordinary things, in people’s snobbery and in his friendships. He also found comfort in his dreamworld where he had an Aunty Glad who cared for him and gave him ‘handbag’ (old fashioned gay slang for money). I still think about Brian, and regret the way things turned out – I pray for him and for all those I have lost, but I am also proud to be the bearer of his story, and to ensure he is not forgotten. Almost all of us have the privilege of carrying someone within us, and it is not a burden, indeed we are richer for it.

aving done every other variation on his Nunsense! theme, I suppose it was only a matter of time until Dan Goggin tossed a Jew or two into his money-making, crowd-pleasing juggernaut. The result, Meshuggah-Nuns!, posits what might occur if the Little Nuns of Westwego had to fill in on an ecumenical cruise ship after rough seas sideline the entire cast of Fiddler on the Roof except for its Tevye. Can we say jumping the shark? Oy, such a mishigas! The script is full of lame jokes that were already old back in vaudeville days (To his credit, Goggin is well-aware that much of the humor is of the type that gets a rimshot-on-the-snare-drum variety). The characters have about as much depth as a baptismal font. And if songs such as Contrition and If I Were a Catholic don’t actually steal from Fiddler’s score, its composers surely do deserve a small piece of Goggin’s royalties. Perhaps one can’t use the same yardstick to measure a Nunsensical theatrical offering as one would a more ambitious musical. But even if met on its own terms, JPAS’ Meshuggah-Nuns! comes up a bit short. The Nunsense brand depends on performers who can put over its cheeky brand of double entendre-laced humor. As The Reverend Mother, Karen Bradshaw sang well with her powerful voice but her acting skills are more at a novitiate level than a Mother Superior’s and her comic timing is as flavorful as gefilte fish. As the would-be Tevye, Michael Standley looks more like a young Dom DeLuise than Zero Mostel, which is fine, but he has a weak voice, lacks an innate comic sense, and hasn’t mastered the rhythms of Yiddish/Jewish dialect. Melinda Taliancich Falgoust and Valerie St. Amant do better with their roles but it’s tough when you’re forced to play types (the tough nun, the ambitious nun) rather than real characters.
