Community Center's 2010 Weight Loss Challenge

eginning January 10, 2010, the city of New Orleans will be involved in a special project; one in which no one in this city has seen the likes of before. The LGBT Community Center of New Orleans in proud to sponsor the 2010 Weight Loss Challenge here in your city! The LGBT Community Center of New Orleans has developed a city wide contest that will promote the bettering of individual’s health throughout the Greater New Orleans area. The contest will kick off with the Initial Weigh-In on Sunday, January 10, 2010, at the LGBT Community Center of New Orleans (2114 Decatur Street), and run through June 26, 2010, when a Closed Weigh-In will be conducted to determine the winner. But the Challenge doesn’t end there! On July 9, 2010, a special seated banquet and award ceremony will be held in honor of the Challenge winner at Oceana Restaurant (739 Rue Conti in the French Quarter). The Weight Loss Challenge will be an all encompassing contest which will work with each contestant to lose the weight that they have been trying so hard in the past to lose and for some reason just have not. The first Tuesday of each month of the Challenge will consist of a Weigh-In, conducted by NO/AIDS Task Force’s Private Nutritionist Ginger Bovier, whom each contestant will have access to for questions and health issues. After each Weigh-In, Ms. Bovier will hold a discussion group, open to the general public, and invite guest and specialist to discuss topics ranging from healthy food choices to heart health to cooking demonstrations and wine pairing. The goal of the LGBT Community Center’s 2010 Weight Loss Challenge is to lose the most percentage of body weight, and do it in a stable and healthy manner. Group exercise classes, derived and directed by professionals, are planned for the contestants at local fitness providers and outdoor locations throughout the Greater New Orleans area. The exercises range from boot-camp training to spin-

ning classes to tai chi yoga and water aerobics. Each week will consist of no less than two group activities and no more than five group activities for the contestants. The group exercise classes will be closed sessions; however, in the spring months, certain outdoor exercise classes are planned and will be open to the general public. Other than the planned group activities, each contestant will be provided with the knowledge to continue exercising in a private setting. Some of the amazing sponsors working with the LGBT Community Center of New Orleans and hosting the group exercises are Balance Spa and Fitness in the Loews Hotel, Salire Fitness and Pilates Studio and Tulane’s Reily Center. Unfortunately, just exercising is not the way to properly lose the weight and keep it off. After you have the determination to attend those classes and create a workout regimen, then it becomes all about putting the right things into your body to become a healthier person. Let us face the facts: We live in New Orleans, the home of fried, dipped, smothered or drenched entrees. The LGBT Community Center has reached out to some of the biggest names in cuisine and developed a program that will teach and show our contestants and the public that you can have great tasting food and it can still be good for you. The 2010 Weight Loss Challenge will take its contestants to a different restaurant each month where the chefs will create completely original, healthy and never seen before in their restaurant meals. The contestants will not only get a chance to taste these amazing and healthy items but also get a chance to speak with the chefs and ask questions about healthier cooking. The amazing restaurants involved are The Creole Skillet, 5FIFTY5, Grand Isle Restaurant, Maximo’s Bar and Grill, Oceana Restaurant, and Ralph’s on the Park. On December 1, 2009, the LGBT Community Center of New Orleans will release the Official Calendar of Events for the entire six months of the 2010 Weight Loss Challenge. activities planned consist of: Mixing drinks at the Southern Food & Beverage Museum, spending a weekend with the St. Bernard Project, and private sessions with a life coach. Starting on November 10, 2009, the general public can obtain a copy of the Contestant Application, along with a copy of the official rules of the contest at the LGBT Community Center of New Orleans’ website at www.lgbtccno.org. All applications must be received at the LGBT Community Center of New Orleans (2114 Decatur Street, New Orleans, LA 70116) before 6pm Eastern Time on Wednesday, December 23, 2009, for consideration to become a contestant. The 2010 Weight Loss Challenge is open to men, women, and transgenders (gay, bi-sexual or straight) who are 18 years or older as of January 1, 2010. And what is a contest without prizes? Besides a banquet devoted to the winner and his or her struggles and victory, there are some amazing prizes such as a complete make-over, a one year membership to a local gym to continue their path to a healthier lifestyle and much more! The LGBT Community Center of New Orleans would like to invite everyone to it's Annual 12/12 Celebration to meet with Weight Loss Challenge sponsors, ask questions, take a look at the Calendar of Events for the following year and just meet the Board of Directors of the Community Center. Applications and all information will be available for the Weight Loss Challenge at this event. 12/12 is held in honor of the day the Community Center first opened its doors back in 1993 and the day in 1991 when the City of New Orleans Human Rights Ordinance was passed which included Gays and Lesbians, and has been an annual event since 2007. Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker Coming to New Orleans

he Moscow Ballet will be returning to New Orleans this holiday season for a special performance of its critically acclaimed Great Russian Nutcracker benefitting Kingsley House on Saturday, November 28 at 8pm. The event will take place at the newly reopened Mahalia Jackson Theater. Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker features spectacular sets and more than 45 beautifully costumed Russian dancers. Whimsical and imaginative storytelling blends with the richness of Russian classical dance to make the Great Russian Nutcracker a unique performance available in southeast Louisiana this year! “Kingsley House is proud to be collaborating with the Moscow Ballet on this wonderful event,” said Kingsley House

Halloween Recap

hat a showing! The crowds filled all the way down Bourbon Street and made parking a mad house yet now that the smoke has cleared all the clubs, hotels, and venues have reported Halloween 2009 a SUCCESS!! Now let’s recap on this amazing holiday! Legendary DJ Tony Moran spun on Friday at Oz to an amazing crowd that didn’t let up till 5am! Although he showed up 2 hours late to the party we still enjoyed hearing him spin till the weee hours of the morning! Crazy time had by all but a great START of the holiday! Halloween Circuit Party at Mardi Gras World packed in over 5,000 people to the event which included a stage show with dancers performing Michael Jackson’s Thriller and with a touch of pyrotechnics they made Halloween night a great start at midnight! At 12:30, Grey Cross presented his UV Glowing human statue with 14 male nude models painted in BRIGHT UV paint! Grey has posted all the pictures on his Facebook page so add him and see the hot glowing men that were on the balcony above! Sunday the crowds still flowed into the Quarter for dancing and festivities all day and night. I gave up at about 3:30am but from what I was told no one really cleared out till about 6am! REMARKABLE! Thanks to DJ Joe Gauthreaux for keeping the crowd pumping at Oz! Its always good to have him home!

Corner Pocket Begins New Sunday Show

he Corner Pocket just finished with their Calendar Boy contest and will begin their NEW SHOW this Sunday! Again the always glittering Barry Bareass will MC the rounds of hot boys in the Bareass Strip Tease! Barry promises that this will be a great show filled with what else but hot boys getting as naked as legally possible! Showtime is 10pm and more details can be found at cornerpocket.net. Oz presents Horror Turn-A-Bout

ord what a scary night this was! If you ever thought you would see scary drag this was the night to see it! Bartenders, DJs, security, and even GM Tommy Elias entertained the packed night club for the annual show and brought down the house! The show began with Blanche Debris and Nathan Brooks (that’s me!) performing Suddenly Seymore and from there the staff took their spots performing dressed as everything from a hip hopping granny to little red riding hood! GM Tommy Elias ended the night with a group presentation of Rocky Horror and presented himself as the Sweet Transvestite Frankenfurter. There are people still not

able to sleep with the idea of seeing Tommy dressed in little less then a corset and fishnets. All videos of the event will be posted to YOUTUBE.com the first week of December so be on a look out for all the fun had at the event.

Tubby's Golden Lantern's Costume Contest

ubby’s Golden Lantern held it’s Halloween Costume Contest on Halloween night, to a packed house of ghouls and goblins, and many other spooky notables. Bartenders Stephen, Lance and Wilhelmina, did an outstanding job of keeping the crowd lubricated with alcoholic potions. And not to be outdone was Rick, the owner, looking lovely in his gypsy, pirate wench outfit, with his lover, Rick, being an ultra glamorous Mother Superior (whom I hope will take Sister Mary Isawhore to task for growing a beard). The contest was headed by The Mummy - Rikki Redd, and Count Dracula - Winston Gray and emcee’d by The Undertaker - Gary Glitter. They had their hands full, as an extremely large amount of contestants had to be narrowed down, according to audience participation screaming for the one they wanted to win. With the likes of Zombie Cheerleaders, gay Spiderman, Zombie Bowlers from Hell, the Stick People, Red Riding from the Hood, and Cereal Killer, it was very tough to decide who would be the winners. But, it all boiled down to: Bud Mummy - $25 bar tab, Pumpkin Heads - $50 cash, and Double Header - $100 cash. Very excellent costumes by all!

Dominique DeLorean Joins the Cast of Oz

never thought I would say this but it is CONFIRMED that Dominique DeLorean will be on the rotating cast at Oz Night Club on Sunday and Wednesday nights. The cast still includes members of Drag Survivor but stay close to your myspace or Twitter to see when the Co-Promoter and former Miss Louisiana will grace the stage of the Land of Dance!

Loup Garou at City Park’s East Golf Course

n the future, there will be two types of people: those who saw Loup Garou and those who didn’t. Those who did will never forget it. ArtSpot Productions and Mondo Bizarro have transformed a section of City Park’s East Golf Course into a staging area for Raymond “Moose” Jackson’s reinterpretation of South Louisiana’s loup garou legend. Poetic and hypnotic, it is a grand narrative involving personal heritage, Authority’s treatment of non-conformists, self-determination, and the land & the price we pay for not taking care of it.

Unique in its presentation, it’s a tale filled with Shakespearean language and passions. Nick Slie portrays Sebastian Coteau who grows up harboring a sense of guilt for his role in the death of a sister he was supposed to protect. Like his father, Sebastian’s a little strange–might he be epileptic? Or schizophrenic? Or just different from the rest of us? He is said to be infected by the spirit of the “loup garou,” a kind of Cajun werewolf. A relative tries to cure him. It doesn’t work and he starts living out of doors. He seeks shelter in a country church where the priest tries to exorcise the Devil from him. It

doesn’t work and he’s chained to a wall. He escapes from his bonds and winds up in New Orleans. The big city is not right for him and he returns to live off the wilderness land, letting us wonder what further adventures and challenges lie in store for him. Kathy Randels’ direction was as fluid as the bayou, concealing props within leaves and under dirt for Slie to excavate and use. Wonderful stage images abounded as when Slie plunged his wet face into a pan of flour to come up looking like a ghost or when an oil barrel, cut open on its side, became a pirogue for Slie to paddle through the swamp. In a fearless performance, Slie was commanding physically, vocally and spiritually. Sinuous, expansive and committed to the down’n’dirty aspects of the loup garou legend, Slie masterfully created a variety of other characters as well— Coteau’s elderly Cajun aunt, a friendly if misguided priest, Coteau’s abusive father. And his booming outdoors projection shames all other actors who rely on mi-

Barbara and Whit Connah’s music was lyrical and haunting, and their playing (she on fiddle, he on harmonica, squeezebox and triangle) added to the timeless atmosphere. Though much of Jackson’s script is spellbinding, it could use some editing. When it goes from the specifics of Coteau’s story to the general history of the Cajun people, it feels like every other telling of this sad tale. The New Orleans segment threatens to become another cliched portrait of sex’n’booze in the Big Easy, and I could’ve lived without the “Let’s get lost in the gumbo” line. And though the topics are worthy, when the talk turns to the harmful effects of the oil and gas industry on Louisiana’s wetlands, Jackson verges on the polemical. Fortunately, in all these cases, Jackson gets back to his bewitching tale fairly quickly, but he may want to consider further shaping of these sections for future incarnations of Loup Garou. Loup Garou was timed to conclude with the setting of the sun, but not even its creators could have arranged for some birds’ perfectly cued squawking or the glorious pinks and oranges that streaked the sky as the performance I saw ended. If you want to be among those to experience this major theatrical achievement, you have three more chances as part of the New Orleans Fringe Festival, November 13-15.

The Apple Tree at NOCCA

ith its pleasant songs, Sheldon Harnick & Jerry Bock’s The Apple Tree is a collection of three appealing one-act musicalettes that hark back to the day when Broadway musicals did not have to be earth-shattering megahits to be enjoyable and successful. As we continue to endure bloated drek and silly jukebox shows, one wishes that was still true today. Mark Twain’s The Diary of Adam and Eve starts things off with a part droll, part wistful retelling of the first couple’s relationship from prickly beginnings to poignant ending. The Lady or the Tiger, set in some Arabian kingdom, follows with its cute tale of forbidden love that ends in a teasingly unresolved manner. Last is the delightful Passionella about a chimney sweep who yearns to be a movie star and what happens when her wish comes true. A.J. Allegra adjusted his direction to suit each part—straightforward and naturalistic for Adam and Eve, over-the-top razzmatazzy for Lady/Tiger, and fractured fairy tale-like for Passionella—wisely taking his cues from each story and its accompanying musical motifs. trodding the boards ...from 12 it is, but found just the right tone for each. As has come to be expected at NOCCA, the entire cast fulfilled the demands of each show with just the right touch. Projecting unassuming masculinity, Jonathan Stevens was a guy’s guy Adam, perplexed by but dependent on this woman creature who’s come into his life. Aubrey Adams was a charming and smart Eve with a nice, if lite, voice. Devon Holloway could amp up his wattage a bit but he still had a wonderful, insinuating presence as the Snake. In The Lady or the Tiger, Dylan Troost brought a manic intensity to the Balladeer like a Warner Brothers cartoon character come to life. Emily Schexnaydre well-conveyed Princess Barbara’s haughtiness and humanity while Adam Segrave as her father King Arik may well be a future Dom DeLuise or Nathan Lane. Kyle Adam and Delia Bennett, as Barbara’s paramour and lady servant, were both fine. Appearing first as the chimney sweep Ella, Ximone Rose gave an outstanding performance combining a comedienne’s distinctive voice and character-defining

In brief

Ximone Rose in The Apple Tree body language with a pure, pitch-perfect singing voice she used to belt while always remaining true to her character. And transformed into Passionella, Rose captured the essence of the movie—or Broadway—star she well might be some day. Tara Brewer’s choreography wasn’t flashy (well, a little and appropriately so) but, better yet, with its dense frills and ornamentations, conveyed the personality of the dancers’ characters, no mean feat. McNally Sislo’s simple but effective set design, Joshua Courtney’s fanciful lighting, Charlotte Svenson witty costumes, and Tayler Robertson’s apt sound design all contributed to the evening’s joyfulness. Similar to but not as well known as such contemporaneous vest-pocket musicals as The Fantasticks and You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, we owe NOCCA a debt of gratitude for reviving this delicious Apple.

or those who had never seen Damn Yankees before, the recent production at Le Petit was a very good community theater introduction to it. Likewise, traditionalists seemed to be entertained by it. But I couldn’t help wondering if Director A.J. Allegra, who has done such fine work (Assassins, Once Upon a Mattress, The Apple Tree (see above)) was charged by the Petit powersthat-be to deliver a show that subscribers would find aesthetically the same as the original Broadway production or any of its other incarnations in the past 50+ years. I suppose some would score that as a home run but I think they missed an opportunity for a touchdown. Or something like that. The NOLA Project’s production of Adam Rapp’s Finer Noble Gases was well-directed by Gabrielle Reisman, and well-acted by Matthew Martinez, Liam Kraus and especially Ian Hoch and Chris Lane. It featured a suitably grungy set by Eli Grove and evocative lighting by Christian Smith. And there’s nothing necessarily wrong with a play that deals with loneliness and wasted lives. But whatever attracted the usually worthy NOLA Projectors to Rapp’s weird, pointless orgy of small talk is beyond me.

New in New York

t’s been an unusually wan theater season in New York of late but a recent visit there provided some excellent entertainment whether you like your running times long, short or in-between. Robert Lepage’s Lipsynch is NYC’s current marathon champ, clocking in at nearly nine hours including intermissions and a dinner break. Seen at BAM as part

of the Next Wave Festival, it focuses on the interconnected lives of nine people and the many more who come into their orbit. But more than that, Lipsynch is a meditation on communication between parents & children, siblings, doctors & patients, lovers, employers & employees, actors & audiences, the dead & the living, and our inner & outer selves, and how this is affected by translation (four different languages are used throughout the evening along with subtitles), loss of memory, dubbing of tracks for movies, lipsynching, and various other forms of communication. Lepage, known for his innovative stage images, doesn’t disappoint here as he creates the illusion of an actor floating through a table, of (superimposed) hands violating a young woman’s body, and people running to catch a train. With settings on an airplane and in a car, at a nightclub and on a movie set, the entire effect was bracingly theatrical and visually stunning. The international cast of nine, each playing multiple roles, was uniformly superb. Despite some profound insights, Lipsynch does have its flaws; some parts seem disconnected from the rest of the show while some characters are painted with fairly broad strokes. But even after nine hours, I wouldn’t’ve minded staying around a bit longer to see how these people and their stories continued to evolve. At the other end of the spectrum is Joan Rivers and her ongoing gig, Live in Times Square, at the Laurie Beechman Theatre. Though only 55 minutes long, her stand-up routine is so jam-packed with line after brilliant line that she seems to give you at least two hours worth of

Mussels in Bordelaise Sauce We started with two very dirty, very dry Stoli Marinis (7) while we perused the menu. Here we found selections which were reminiscent of our trips to Rome, Italy. A special appetizer was available, fresh Mussels in Bordelaise Sauce (12.50). They were done perfectly in the garlic wine sauce, delicious and tender. One of the entrees we chose was the Veal Fontinella (23) which was served with breaded cutlets topped with Fontina and Pomodoro Sauce on a bed of garlic oil pasta. Manifico! But the piece de resistance had to be the Osso Buco (34.95). If Osso Buco is on the menu, we never pass it up. Here the veal shank was braised in a garlic, thyme and white wine demi-glace, and was so tender you could have cut it with a spoon. The demiglace gave it one of the richest and we believe the best Osso Buco we've ever experienced. Until now, our favorite Osso Buco was at Salvatore in Metairie. There were several selections for dessert, but when reminiscing of Rome, we had to try the Lemon Gelato (6.50), a perfect ending to a perfect meal with our server Cara.

A true story of the murder that rocked New Orleans” is by a new citizen to our beloved city, Ethan Brown. Brown and his wife moved to New Orleans after Katrina. They visited several times and fell in love with our home while on their honeymoon. They enjoyed our kooky life-style. Barry Marino read and was impressed by Brown’s book. He introduced Ethan to me via Facebook. Barry wanted me to read and review the true story that reads like a work of fiction. After a phone conversation interview, Ethan had a copy of the novel sent to me. Shake the Devil Off covers in-depth the murder and suicide of Zackery Bowen and Addie Hall in the post-Katrina French Quarter at the rental property of Leo Watermeier. Knowing the gentle nature of Leo makes it easy to believe that this event took a heavy toll on his emotions. But this is not a story of Leo. It is a story of Zack which begged to be told. Zack and Addie were not natives. Like so many others, they came to New Orleans and fell in love with the atmosphere, easy life-style and the fun to be found around every corner. In an area where you can find a bar on every corner, it is easy to find fun and drugs and companions who want to share these opportunities. Zack had a shaky upbringing. He was the product of a broken home where the discomfort of his parent’s divorce caused him to drop out of high school and take a path that lead to his destruction. He left his mother’s home and ran away to New Orleans with his father where he worked as a bartender. During his time bouncing back and forth between New Orleans and his mother’s home in Santa Maria, California near Santa Barbara and his father’s home in Washington State, Zack did not prepare himself for life as an adult. His only abilities were bartending and delivery-boy. While living in New Orleans, Zack met and married Lana. Lana was a rebellious young woman who had left home in her teens and worked as a stripper. The two were a miss-match. The young couple had two children that Zack and Lana loved very much. In an effort to give the children a normal and happy life, Zack decided to make a career in the military. It would have worked had it not been for the irresponsible attitude of the U S Army, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and an immature and selfish wife. Lana is made out to be a pleasant woman and loving wife and mother but reading about her actions before, during and after Zack’s time in the military, proven by her selfabsorbed actions, shows her to me to be a less than good wife for the needy Zack. After Zack’s separation from the military and Lana, the idea was hers; Zack moves back into the Quarter, takes another bartending job and meets Addie. It sounds like love at first sight for Zack. Addie didn’t want to be bothered with him. It was a peculiar beginning for the couple

and not one that would make you think the relationship could last. The tie that bound the couple together was Katrina. Zack was needy and became dependent upon a mentally ill Addie. Addie had anger issues. When on drugs or alcohol, she became abusive. She would lash out at anyone with whom she came in contact. But Zack was her whipping boy. It is important to understand how Zack became so mentally disturbed that he would take the abuse and when he couldn’t take anymore began to give it out. It pretty much boils down to his experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan. The death of innocents was the burden Zack carried. The loss of friends was too much for him to endure. Zack was an MP serving with the 527th Company. He found it next to impossible to train the inept and corrupt Iraqi police. It has to be noted that Zack was a good fit for the Army and was promoted quickly. He received several medals and award – Driver and Mechanic Badge, a Kosovo Campaign Medal and Presidential Unit Citation. He also was awarded The Good Conduct Medal. Yet Zack was separated from the Army on a general discharge when he deserved an honorable discharge. This sentiment is shared with the director of Veterans for Common Sense after studying Zack’s entire military record. During his time in Baghdad, Zack became increasingly depressed. He had left his family in Giessen, Germany when he went to Iraq. His return to them did not help his attitude and depression. Lana’s lack of understanding and acceptance distanced the couple and she finally left him in Germany with the two children while she went back to New Orleans. And when he returned to New Orleans with their children, Lana announced that she was seeing someone. This was another blow to Zack’s delicate ego. He looked to Addie as an angel of rebirth. They began dating and he stayed with her off and on until just before Katrina. As holdouts during the hurricane, the couple fell deeply in love partying, sleeping and making love under the stars. They made new friends with other holdouts. They took pride in being the brave who would not let the National Guard force them to leave the Quarter. As people started coming home after weeks away, Zack became resentful that his playground was being taken from him. He and Addie started falling back into less than perfect harmony. But what made Zack act so strongly against the woman he loved? For that you’ll have to read the book. It is a quick read as Brown is a very pleasant author who grabs and keeps your interest. Not only does he tell Zack’s story, he also fills in the information on the military’s failure to assist the returning soldiers. Brown’s research on the suicide rate of military men and women is appalling and eye opening.

I highly recommend this book. I didn’t always agree with Brown’s description of our bars and restaurants. He didn’t seem to know the difference between “run-down” and “aged” (LOL). If you don’t remember the immediate jump in the murder rate in New Orleans after Katrina, this book will help you to be reminded of those days and the reason for much of the social downturn. It will explain also why we are still not back up to par. If you don’t understand the title, then perhaps you have never attended a jazz funeral. It is the second line that follows the casket in a solemn march and returns

home joyfully dancing as they shake the devil off sending the deceased on his way in peace. Since reading this book, I’ve met several people who knew Zack and Addie. They all agree with what I’ve read about this star-crossed couple. Most have said that they liked Zack but found Addie a difficult and unpleasant woman. For my money, Zack was surrounded all his life by difficult and unpleasant women who loved him yet failed him. But in the end, we all know that we are responsible for ourselves, and Zack failed himself.

t is a tragedy to me that a year after the calamitous California vote that stripped equality from our community we are mourning another example of legislative cowardice and electoral ignorance. The reason civil rights are guaranteed judicially across the world (where they are) and not voted in and out on the public whim is due to the very nature of civil rights. Civil Rights exist to guarantee the liberty and equality of minorities in the face of majority ignorance, prejudice and indifference. Decade upon decade of Jim Crow laws -strengthened and augmented by voter approval should have taught us that ‘that way lays madness’. I understand why politicians put such things to the vote, and also that in many states amendments can and are triggered by petitions etc. I also understand the noble impulse behind such direct democracy, but in reality direct democracy becomes mob rule very easily – what most free nations settle upon is ‘representative democracy’ where people are voted in to LEAD for a period of time, not to be led by the momentary whims of the masses. Mark twain described the worst excesses of democracy as ‘two wolves and a sheep deciding on what to have for dinner’. Down here in Louisiana it is easy to feel like a sheep, having your future decided by wolves. The rule of law is supposed to be above the majority will (at any single moment in time), otherwise society descends to the lowest common denominator. Societies rightly build constitutions devoted to upholding broad swathes of virtue, that are gradually fulfilled over centuries, not cast aside in a single day. The broad swathe of virtue that has represented the American dream for three hundred years is that all are created equal and that all are entitled to ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’. If this can be overturned by a passing whim of the public then nobody, and I mean NOBODY is safe and these statements are meaningless hypocrisy! It also means that the guarantees already existing in law are ultimately secondary to any pogrom or campaign of hate that may come about in the future; furthermore, the constitution is no guarantee against ANY excess if the public hate something strongly enough. America without liberty and equality

may flatter the right wing, but it would look a lot less like America. America that does not enshrine such values is more and more like a glorified focus group and a lot less like the ruler of the ‘Free World’. There are many, many countries that genuinely enshrine equality at the heart of their legal process, and they place it above the humdrum of politics as does America in its Supreme Court. The days when America was a sole beacon of these notions surrounded by darkness, dictatorships and oppression have long gone! America has been left behind on the issue of minority protection by countries ranging from South Africa to The Netherlands, from The United Kingdom to New Zealand, and Canada to Spain. The current system means that change comes at the speed of the slowest, which may of course be never – if the federal government had not stepped in and if the Supreme Court had not ruled against The State of Virginia in Loving v. Virginia there would in all likelihood still be states with anti miscegenation laws and systems of apartheid. These laws were hugely popular, and it is to the shame of the nation that they stood for so long in direct contravention of the Constitution. That Homer Plessy was ruled against in 1896 by The Supreme Court in Plessy v. Ferguson, but that the same principle, that racial segregation is unconstitutional was ruled in favor of in Brown v. The Board of Education in 1954 shows that popular prejudice distorts and warps these decisions. There has been a gradual unfurling of the principles enshrined in The Constitution, a realization of their extent and integrity, and it will take a further ‘unfurling’ and ‘flowering’ of these same principles at the level of The Supreme Court to guarantee our rights to equality in marriage, and in every other area of life. Half Naked Firefighters Each Month

gay man‘s fantasy is firefighters. There is something sensual about the uniform, the hoses, the sliding down the pole and the heat, that just leaves us breathless. Well, now you can have a different half naked firefighter each month in your bedroom, on your desk or anywhere you want him. The brand new, right off the presses 2010 New Orleans Firefighters Calendar is on sale now. Twelve months of some of the hottest men in (and out) of uniform and the men sizzling. All the proceeds go to the New Orleans Firefighter Foundation. The calendar sales will generate funds which the foundation will use to purchase thermal imagers and computer fire-training simulators. A thermal imager translates infrared radiation into a viewable image, which shows a heat picture of the scene. Because infrared radiation is not blocked by smoke, firefighters can use thermal imagers to see through smoke enabling them to find victims faster, to identify the seat of the fire earlier, and to detect structural dangers that could put firefighters at risk. Computer fire-training simulators are needed to allow firefighters to gain valuable experience using virtual reality techniques already applied in other fields enabling the firefighter to learn without the possibility of harming himself/herself or others. With the recent influx of new firefighters since Hurricane Katrina, computer fire-training simulators will serve as an excellent training tool facilitating the safety of the firefighters and of the community we serve. Knowing that the proceeds go to a great cause, just makes it all the better when you purchase the calendars. On October 22, the firefighters had their calendar release party at their Decatur Street firehouse and across the street at the Bienville House Hotel. What a great night with different delectable treats by Iris Restaurant and lots of fun libations. I especially like the Firefly Sweet Tea drinks and their logo is to die for. "Put a little South in your mouth." Now if that is not gay as hell, I do not know what is. Love it! But the night was all about the men in uniform and they were there for photos and to sign calendars. In fact one hottie wrote this fabulous inscription on mine, “Keep it hot and leave them wet.“ Now that

Recap: My Gay Halloween Adventure

ut before we go onto all the other hot holiday functions, I wanted to recap my big gay Halloween adventure. My actual Halloween celebration started the weekend before Halloween with the Krewe of Boo Parade which rolled downtown on Saturday, October 24. Once again this parade has surpassed all my expectations and is quickly becoming one of my preferred krewes as well as a crowd favorite considering the throngs of people who were where I was standing at its start on Elysian Fields. The bands were fun, the floats were creative and the throws were to die for. Love my lighted pumpkin bead. And keep in mind that this krewe has a charitable cause, proceeds of it go to the First Responders Fund. And, by the way, who were the two hot queens riding atop the First Responders float? After the parade, I went and changed into my costume for the Krewe of AmonRa’s Halloween party which was a hoot. I love dressing up in costume and that night there were some great costumes. I was a Voodoo Priest with a fabulous headdress. The entire night was fun filled with fabulous eats and a great costume contest. But the party kicked into high gear afterwards when Miss Opal Masters had her birthday show. It was a star studded extravaganza, filled with wonderful perfor-

mances. It was a great way to kick off the holiday festivities. And after the show, Opal regaled us with stories of a Halloween past when she was almost burned at the stake with the other witches of Salem. Luckily she got away by doing a medley of some of the puritans’ favorite hits and escaped to New Orleans. Boy, I actually thought she didn’t look a day over forty. Who knew? The Halloween weekend came upon us like a flurry of candy corned, costumed excitement. Halloween 26 kicked off with a fabulous event at Canal Place. This is their dress to impress affair with some wonderful restaurants supplying the food and an amazing silent auction. The theme was An Autumn Indulgence. The entertainment that night was Amy and Freddy who are the best cabaret act I have witnessed in a very long time. She sang all the gays favorite hits that many people were singing right along with her. The drinks were potent and what an incredible bar accessory - a male model in a tub. There was a tub filled with olives, lemons, limes and cherries and a naked model placed the fruit of your choice in your drink. Talk about very sexy. I especially liked the sexy scarecrow in the cornfield. Very creative. Congratulations to the chair for Thursday’s event, Nick Nevares, who did an outstanding job and Tyler Douglas who was the chair for the silent auction. Friday was a whirlwind of activity as I hosted a pre-party with Miss Elizabeth Bouvier (aka Jeff Mallon) as a beginning to the Halloween weekend. It was at his beautiful home in the Bywater and we went all out with hot boys bartending sans shirts and incredible delicacies from Bywater BBQ. A big thank you to Rich and Ray who outdid themselves with the fabulous Halloween decorations. The costumes were great and the party was packed. Thank you Elizabeth for always being the perfect co-host to a party. I am thinking we need to marry for social climbing reasons. Having the right person on your arm means everything in society. But at 10pm we had to kick everyone out so we can make it to the next Halloween event which was held at Generations Hall and was entitled Wicked Winter Wonderland. From the painted winter white muscular go-go boys to the great music, this was another successful pre-party to the big night. Thanks to Ryan Wentworth who was the chair for Friday evening, he did a great job. Now I woke up on Saturday a little dizzy but like the trooper I am, grabbed two aspirins, and jump started my day. My Halloween night had to be one of the best nights I have had in a long time. The Contessa Christine Breaux arranged for a limousine to convey us around all night to our different locations and we made some stops. We started the night off with a few drinks at my friend Cheryl Lemoine’s Mid City house who was having a party to celebrate her Halloween birthday. How fabulous to have a birthday on Halloween night. There will always be a party to go to on that night. It was a lovely affair, then we moved to the Marigny for our next two soirees, both on Burgundy Street one block apart from each other. How very convenient. The first was our friend Craig Henry who had a party at his studio. Craig is a talented sculpture who also donated a piece in the silent auction on Thursday night which fetched over a thousand dol-

lars. His works are very detailed and he has a following of art lovers. His party was unique with lots of artists of all kinds attending. And, it was very cool to see his studio where he does his works of art. A block away, my friend Steve hosted a party for his friends. He dressed as a silver street performer and some of the costumes of the guests were inspired, like Ash from the Evil Dead movies complete with his chainsaw hand and the two beautiful witches as Glinda and Elphaba from Wicked. After Steve’s party, it was time to play with the gay boys and boy did I. The Halloween extravaganza was held at Mardi Gras World on the Eastbank and it was phenomenal. The host lounge was in their ornate Mansion Room. Jacob Smith did a great job as the chair who handled the host lounges for both Friday and Saturday night. The costumes this year were a wonderful mixture of themed ones, campy ones and just downright funny ones, with a slight dash of the scary ones thrown in for good measure. My favorite were the ones that won one of the trophies, the boys for all seasons. They were original and they worked the them brilliantly. From back to school, to Halloween, Easter, Fourth of July and Christmas,, they had all the holidays covered. The midnight show was a Thriller tribute and the dancers nailed it. People were dancing and having a good time as approximately a dozen fabulous performers executed the entire routine for Thriller flawlessly. How appropriate for the night. The male models they had dancing were sculpted gods. There was plenty of eye candy and yes, I rocked with sexy Jesus and partied with Lestat. All and all it was good devilish fun. A special credit should go to the chairs for that evening Nick Nesbit and Jacob Villere who produced a memorable event. For those survivors of Halloween, the weekend was not over until the Natchez sailed. At least that was the Sunday Spring Rejuvenation party which was aboard this wonderful steamboat. Guests were greeted by the calliope playing show tunes. That was a special touch that did not go unnoticed. I had never heard the calliope play Over the Rainbow or Cabaret. The weary travelers setting sail after a night f partying were greeted by your cruise director who was none other than the talented Bianca Del Rio, who made sure everyone had a good time. Performing in the lounge was Harry Mayronne and Anais St. John and upstairs on the top deck Mary Pappas was spinning her heart out. What was so special about this event was that it was at a location that allowed out of town guests a chance to experience a New Orleans tradition, a riverboat ride. The ship went all the way to the Chalmette Battlefield and back before docking. Don Paul Landry and Craig Trentecosta should be commended on a fresh and fun event. From the first event to the last one, this was one of the best Halloween’s I have attended. And I would like to thank everyone who was part of all the events, from the chairs to the volunteers. The two co-chairs of the entire event are Jerry Fredieu and Jason Waguespack and they definitely should be acknowledged for all their hard work. Halloween Happenings

hen I learned that Robert won the big contest category in Spanish Town, I nearly lost it. He came as a straight man. You have to know Robert to know how hilarious that was. He is one of the sexy studs that hang out on Gerry’s porch, or maybe I should say “one of the members of the Black Label Blues Society.” There is no drinking allowed at the Capitol Grocery, so the guys and gals buy their beer and just migrate across the street or to the porch next door to the store where Gordon lives. At any rate, Gerry’s house was a big hit in the neighborhood last week. It was complete with smoke and all sorts of scary goodies. You could barely see the house for the decorations, but that was how it was planned. A fun time was had by all. Now the big surprise of this Halloween season was my most beautiful, absolutely gorgeous Luther. He was hardly recognizable, but even all decked out the way he was I still found him to be one of the most tantalizing guys I’ve ever known. I thought no one would ever be able to match Hanley for originality of costume design, but Luther did it. The George’s bartenders were outstanding – Michael as an airline pilot (wonder if he was ever in a cockpit) and Jared, a very sexy phantom of the opera. I didn’t ask but I’m sure Luther had to be right of “Night of the Living Dead.” By the way, speaking of that movie, I ran across a restored version that really made that old black and white film a little more appealing to watch – if you want to sit back and smile a little. I personally wanted to slap that blonde sideways. I had seen

it so many times I just couldn’t take it all the way to the end. I had better things to watch. I have to brag a little about Splash here. These guys over at this dance emporium really get into the decorations. A lot of money is spent making things fit the occasion, and all the Halloween decorations were really outstanding. Once you enter the front door, you get the feel of the occasion and you spend the rest of your time being amazed at each room and how things all came together. One of my favorite views (other than the sexy guys) is the view from the dance floor and up at the balcony. The lighting, beautifully colored walls, and nice furniture invite you to relax and survey the activities on the dance floor from above. What a great place to spend some leisure time enjoying a special drink or two. Joy is always decorating the Time Zone and uses her expertise and flair at artistic creations to present nice surroundings here. I love the quaint, rather historic atmosphere at this bar, along with the lighted vines and the company of good friends. James and Kyle continue to offer a great place for locals in the Spanish Town area. You just walk there, no driving involved. If you do, then you have to make sure you get home okay. I laughed so hard the other day I actually hurt. It seems that my neighbor, who I won’t embarrass by naming, was walking down my street, and I asked where he was going so early in the morning. He said his truck got drunk the night before, and he was going to pick it up and bring it home. It was the way he said it that made it so hilarious and this coming from a relatively quiet individual. George’s is always a great place to be on holidays, but Halloween is a little bit more difficult for them. The 13th Gate is on

the next block, and parking is a problem. This doesn’t seem to deter business, but it is a nuisance to have to put up with the crowds of pleasure seekers that line up around the block to get into this haunted facility. The Pastime has the same problem, but it goes with the territory. Once inside George’s, it happy central as friends come together to enjoy the festivities. I’ve always loved this bar “with the personal touch.”

Movie Madness

he movie studios are still here, and Spanish Town is going to be all over the big screen. I’m not sure how much of it will be recognizable, but I really look forward to see what they will finally present to us. While walking my dog this morning, fake gunfire was coming from down behind Capitol Grocery on Lakeland. Last week, they were blowing up the interstate. They were also chasing bad guys down University Walk. This doesn’t even begin to tell you about all the other spots around town where they have been filming.

Historic Sadness

lot of this action has taken some of the edge off the continued strife between the historic groups and citizens over the attempt to build a hideous condo unit between historic Spanish Town and the State Capitol. It just makes me wonder why politicians can’t for once in their great tenures in office to just come out and do something right. No is only two letters. Is it that difficult to say or to put it down on a piece of paper? The future of historic designations is at stake here.

Virgin Rescue

I asked the owner if he would mind if I placed her in my garden. I just don’t like to see her leaning against a garage and forgotten or even maybe thrown out with the excess waste materials from renovations. She will love her new home.

n All Saints Day, I decided to stroll around the neighborhood and see what damage had been done on Halloween night. Surprisingly, it was rather clean and made the walk so nice. Usually there are candy wrappers and other trash littering the street, but it was as if nothing had happened to alter things. This is good. The doors were open at Claudette and Debbie’s place, and with only Claudette’s car out front, I decided to see what she was up to. I had seen Gerry and Debbie earlier, and they were on their way to fetch lunch. I woke the neighborhood up calling her name, but this cigar-smoking sweetie finally realized that some crazy nut wasn’t shaking up the neighborhood, and that it was only me. We chatted for a while and caught up on some of the latest scoop. In Spanish Town, it isn’t gossip. It’s scoop. And we really have a lot of that around the area. This Seventh Street residence is often busy with activities, and at Mardi Gras, it is fun central, right in the middle of it all. It was quiet, somewhat deserted, all over the area on All Saints Day. That’s why I had to keep hollering to get Claudette’s attention. I have to admit that Claudette leaning over the balcony reminded me of the Italian lady in the French Quarter who used to lean out her window and talk with people on the street. It’s strange how things like this will trigger your memory for an event or events from your past. I mentioned this Italian lady in one of my short stories set in this historic part of old New Orleans.

Acadian Journey

ast week, I asked Sam if he wanted to make a run over into Acadians to visit an old friend there. I like to take Sam with me because he is always my backup chauffeur, especially if I head out for New Orleans and want to partake of a drink or two. It was only one glass of wine this time with crackers and hogs head cheese and outstanding boudin – and a nice visit with someone I hadn’t seen for several years. I always get my directions wrong when I’m in this part of the state, and Sam is just as bad with directions. At any rate, we saw some new territory and enjoyed the experience immensely. I have to remember to take my GPS with us next time. Maps are good, but they don’t keep you from getting lost.

t was a great bachelor part for Kirk and Kevin. A party bus was rented with stops made at JW Crabtree in Gonzales and then on to George’s. They had a ring ceremony on Sunday, October 18th. It was time for celebrating with this happy couple, and I know one guy who really enjoyed it. In fact, I’m not sure how much he remembered. I’ll have to ask Anthony the next time I see him. Oops!

out & about in mobile Skulls Go Door to Door for First Haunted Bar Crawl by Darwin Singleton he Skulls took the party to the streets of Mobile for Halloween 2009, with the first ever Southern Renegades’ Haunted Bar Crawl! Simple idea, really... Spend about an hour in each of our favorite Port City watering holes and check out how our side of the city is celebrating the holiday. In all, about two dozen Southern Renegades and friends took part, either starting with eats and cups of “Swamp Punch” at Darwin & Rafael’s place in Midtown... or joining us enroute downtown. First stop? Gabriels, where we officially lit the Southern Renegade Jack-OLantern, expertly carved by John and Carroll

(featuring our own steer skull image). Then, a quick walk (glowing pumpkin in the lead) to Vision’s for a little “Scare-EEO-kee!” After joining in with a ‘Jack-in-theBox” for a round of “Friends in Low Places” (coincidence, I’m sure), we snatched our skull-o-lantern and bounced back across Dauphin St. to B-Bob’s, and just in time! Moments later the line to get in wrapped around the corner toward Gabriels, and stayed that way for a couple of hours. About 12:30, those still in the “spirit” trucked out to the Midtown Pub for the nightcap. At 2am, a few tortured souls wandered back down to Gabriel’s “Party Til Dawn” to give Renegade bartender David some company. It just went on from there... And that might have been the end of it.

ittle Corey continues throwing those fabulous tailgate parties over by John Parker Coliseum on the LSU campus. Rain or shine, this guy puts on a show along with his fellow Tiger lovers. They even hit the road for out of town games. I need to start doing something like that, but my old alma mater plays games all over the western part of the country. I have to brag on my horned frogs this year. They are in the top ten and remain undefeated. It brings back lots of members of days gone by. That is why I appreciate Little Corey so much. He enjoys his time with the Tigers as much as I enjoyed my horned frogs so many years ago – and it all comes back to me at this time of the year.

I guess I need to call him the next time I head over there. I’ll catch him on one of his more stressful days and invite him over. I might even throw him on my massage table as a bonus for the occasion. He loves massages, and mine are free. I have been asked before to bring Fleur de Lis pizza to friends and family members in New Orleans. I’m sure Rip and Marsha know what I mean when I mention how great this little “historic holein-the-wall” is. If you haven’t been there, you have missed the best pizza – EVER! And I always like to surprise Tennessee Williams expert Kenneth with biscuits from Christina’s Restaurant, another great gayfriendly place to dine.

o hopefully everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather that has finally arrived, and if you have not yet gotten to, then plan a day soon to get outside and just relax and enjoy the simple beauty around you. Of course, beware of the clouds that always have to roll in as well and ruin everything. Anyway, let me get off the whole weather scene. There's so many other hot scenes you’d rather hear about. If you were downtown for Halloween then I need not say how crazy, exciting, and truly amazing that night was, whether you were down at Sound Factory for their Halloween Bash and fourteen year anniversary, or down at Jules Downtown, I know you had a fabulous time at either place. They both had costume contest, great music was played and anyone and everyone simply had a blast! The costumes, to say the least were stunning. It was a very creative year for all with all that I saw. If for whatever reason you weren’t able to head downtown, remember Halloween is what kicks off all that is to come, from announcement parties to Thanksgiving, Christmas followed by New Year's, and of course, after that no one stops until Mardi Gras. So for the next four months there will surely be something that will intrigue you to head down-

town and see all of us. Sound Factory is gearing up for Apollo’s Announcement After Party which will be on Saturday, November 14 and as always, it will be a party you definitely do want to miss. Laurel & the Electric Circus will be returning Friday, November 20 and are coming to put on a show like you have never seen before and then on Saturday, November 21, R.O.U.’s Announcement After Party will be heading in to pack the bar and get crazy like always. Don’t forget either that Sound Factory is open seven days a week and offers a variety of different things to keep things interesting. If there is ever any questions on what Sound Factory has going on, they ask that you check them out online at Facebook, Myspace and of course you can always call and ask too. So let’s give it up for Sound Factory for turning fourteen and still going strong. Now Jules Downtown has the gears turning for Saturday, November 14 as they throw an 80’s RETRO Party and they invite everyone to head on down and party to the best of the 80’s with DJ Tim Pflueger. They are open four nights a week and they kick things off on Wednesday and keep things rolling straight through Saturday. With Ladies Nights to Project Runway to just dancing all night long to all the music we

know and love. Should you all of the sudden decide that you want to head down to Jules and you’re quite sure what is happening, just pull them up on Facebook and you will be able to find out all that you need to know before walking out your door. Wendy wants to thank all who attended Jules Halloween bash...it was a great success....lots of fun!
