45th Annual Bourbon Street Awards Back on Bourbon

he Forty-fifth Annual Bourbon Street Awards Show, the ultimate costume contest, is set for Mardi Gras Day, February 24 at 12noon. For the first time in 23 years, the contest will actually take place on Bourbon Street. Since 2002, Oz New Orleans has presented the contest on St. Ann at Bourbon. This year it will be outside Oz on Bourbon Street down from Ambush Headquarters at 828 Bourbon. The awards were previously held outside of Cafe Lafitte in Exile until 1985 when it was moved to the corner of Burgundy and St. Ann outside of Rawhide 2010 in 1986. Johnny Chisholm and Oz New Orleans, as well as Bud Light brings us this fantastic contest. Award categories include: Best Drag, Best Leather, Best Group and the grandest award, Best of Show with 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each category. Celebrity emcees will feature the talents of mega circuit star Bianca Del Rio and Oz's own Blanche Debris. The Bourbon Street Awards, well into its fourth decade, has hosted some of the most exciting and extravagant Mardi Gras costumes ever seen. The parade of costumes this year will originate down Bourbon at Dumaine passing both Cafe Lafitte in Exile and Clover Grill, the original site of the awards, heading past Ambush Headquarters towards Oz at 800 Bourbon. The 45th Annual Bourbon Street Awards promises to be “The Best Free Show of Mardi Gras.”

ing Cake Queen XVI of Gay Mardi Gras, Tami Tarmac, will lead the 22nd Annual Official Gay Mardi Gras Bead Toss from the balcony at Ambush Headquarters, 828 Bourbon Street, on Mardi Gras, February 24 beginning at 2pm, following the Bourbon Street Awards. As many of you know, the King Cake Queen is chosen from the invited balcony guests for the bead toss from the previous year's festivities hosted by the Krewe of Queenateenas. The only qualification is to be the individual exhibiting the most enthusiasm and expertise in bead toss techniques. The hard part is for us as co-captains to judge which individual fits the bill. (FNBMG) organizers host their 10th anniversary costume party at the Audubon Tea Room in world famous Audubon Park at 6500 Magazine Street in New Orleans Friday, February 20. Thank God for Mardi Gras

ast Sunday I had the privilege to welcome nearly eighty people to church, which for us is a major high water mark in our rebirth and growth, but for me one of the biggest kicks is that I got to hire a second line band to burst into church at the end playing We’ll understand it better by and by! Let me confess as a New Orleans newcomer I am totally sold on Mardi Gras – it is a wonderful, unique and very peculiar event. It also represents an entire city coming together in all its richness and variety to celebrate a common purpose. So far Leon and I have been to 2 balls and we have three more to go – I was

privileged to give the invocation at both the Mwindo Ball and the Petronius Ball; and had a great time at both of them. Most of my colleagues around the world would kill to have Pastoral duties like that! I think only the MCC pastor in Rio de Janeiro offers any real competition! I preached on Sunday that I was truly happy in New Orleans, indeed I am, and it is honestly beyond me why we are not besieged by hoards of northerners and folk from Mississippi and Texas beating down the door to NOLA. Given a choice between the certainties and banalities of life elsewhere (not to mention the awful weather up north) and the excitement and diversity of life here it

seems a no-brainer. Perhaps it is that very diversity and vibrancy that frightens people off, perhaps it is the prospect that change may come from being challenged and presented with things new and different that sends many folk running in horror. It is of course the only way human beings grow and develop – by being challenged, whether through the new, or the unfamiliar old – or even through adversity and trial. Nobody gets a free ride, a life of leisurely ease never built a character worth a five minute conversation, and never raised up any great prophet or teacher. It is a major concern of mine that increasingly, as The West (and especially America) becomes more suburbanised people choose overwhelmingly to live amongst people like themselves – the challenge of the different is much rarer now than it was when people lived in city centers. The urge to mix only with one’s own kind is strong in churches, and affects the racial mix of US churches profoundly – I consider it a relative triumph that our church is diverse racially, but we need to make a

much greater effort in the coming year to ensure it is properly diverse in terms of gender and sexuality as well – we had a lot of straight folks at church on Sunday which is wonderful, but diversity is something that is a continuing challenge, and nobody can rest of their laurels. We are always fighting the ‘urge’ to shoal together amongst folk who are ‘just like us’. Of course, there is a proviso to all this – it is no reward to be amongst folk that either do not recognize your humanity or actively wish you harm! It is wonderful to experience diversity but only with the ground rule that all are respected – a diverse church where each group hates or mistrusts the other is no blessing, and a church that is part of a denomination that does not accept it’s full equality or preaches against the very people who are giving their tithes every week is a structure of spiritual violence, and should not be supported. I am weary of seeing gay men and women giving their money, time and dreams every week to churches where people then stand up in the pulpit and spew ignorant nonsense about them. This strips us of our self respect, and breeds the internalized homophobia that makes people believe they are inferior, wrong and sinful – merely by virtue of their created nature. We are starting a new advertising push in the coming weeks, with a message that many people will consider flippant and too light hearted - Good! There is no place in church for either pomposity or concern about status – leave those who are seeking a church to bump up their social status to go elsewhere. We will try and signal to people that we are SAFE. I am primarily concerned to reach all those people whose experience of church has put them off for life – who believe that the whole spiritual realm is a closed door because of bible abuse and spiritual violence. I first came back into a church after a long period in the wilderness because I saw a banner outside a church in a gay [continued on 12]

he 7th Annual Marigny Bunny Hop is set for Saturday, April 11 beginning at 2pm. Rip and Marsha Naquin-Delain have been selected to lead the festivities as Bunny Marshals (BM) VII. They follow in the foot steps of BM I-III the late Lewis Routh, BM IV Guadalupe, BM V Poncho, and BM VI Michael "Fish" Hickerson. Eight stops are on the route this year with ten winners in various bonnet categories. I can dictate when Freddie goes outside, when he eats, where he sleeps but if I misuse my power, he’ll just pee in the house or bark until he gets his way. As for me, power is self-discipline. That’s a good trait. These days it includes taking my meds on time and bed rest when I want to be up and out running the streets. Having a heart attack isn’t something to be frivolous about; neither are the several ulcers brought on by not using self-discipline. When I started writing for Ambush, Rip warned me not to take feedback too seriously. People will accuse you of having power that you don’t have, he said. And so it is with the last issue of Ambush where I was accused in the letters to the editor of causing the resignation of four Community Center board members. To use anything I have written in the last two issues as grounds for quitting is ludicrous. If these people wanted to do their jobs and take responsibility for their actions, there is nothing I could say that would make them leave the Center. It sounds to me like they were not fully committed to the projects they gave their “word” to complete. In a conversation with Board Chair Crystal Little, I learned that the board did not agree with the letter. If that is so, why didn’t they write saying that the attitude expressed was not shared by the board. As I understand it, the board had a copy of the letter. I, however, was not sent a copy. Doesn’t that speak volumes? And all this comes at a time when the real workers are doing so much to make the Center a success. They now have enough in the general fund to run the Center for several months. There are events planned and January was a very busy month. I don’t know many of the Center board members but the ones I know – Crystal, Julia, Alan, Lynn and Roberts – are dedicated and hard working. I am hoping that in the future many of you with experience and the desire to help will come forward and volunteer your services. One volunteer who has caught my eye is Hector. I enjoyed listening to his ideas and hope that he will run for the Board. Ked is also a person of great interest. She is an intern from NO/AIDS who works with the Center and has the drive and knowledge to help turn energy into

the pink pastor ...from 8 neighborhood that said ‘God thinks you’re Faaaaabluous!’ Cheesey as this may be, it signalled to me that this was a safe place, that I did not have to be concerned that the most tender and vital part of me – my soul – would be exposed to the icy wind of hatred and ignorance. I pray that The Big Easy MCC can provide as much for the folks here in New Orleans.

efore the blame letter arrived at Ambush, writing about 5 Continents Bed and Breakfast was slated for this issue. This lovely home is owned and operated by Jesse Beaty. I met Jesse at Christ the Liberator Church about 2003. Jesse is a handsome man with the qualities of a gentleman. He was in the process of purchasing and renovating the property located at 1731 Esplanade Avenue for the purpose of opening a bed and breakfast. My first look at the home was during an Easter season when he opened the house to the church for services and Lenten meetings. Since Jesse’s first love was travel, he has lived or visited five of the seven continents. It was his desire to have the b and b reflect his vast travels and experiences. His home is located six blocks from the French Quarter on the avenue to the race track at the Fairgrounds where World famous New Orleans Jazz Festival is held each spring. It is perfectly located for a memorable visit to the “Big Easy.” The house is a two story Greek Revival Mansion with the original carriage house and overseer’s cottage. Jean Francis Del Corral-Monent built the home in the late 1880’s. Architectural features include the 14 foot cove ceilings that lead to a delicate plaster shell and fleur-de-lis motif. Both the ladies’ and gentlemen’s parlors contain original ceiling medallions and gasolier crystal chandeliers. Eight fireplaces with original mantles and ceramic tile hearths set into hard wood floors are set throughout the house. Guests are accommodated in two room suites upstairs in the main house or in the cottage surrounded by a garden area. Each suite is named for a different continent – Europe, Asia, Eurasia and North America. The suites are decorated with artwork from the continent they represent and are furnished with an eclectic collection of antiques and reproduction pieces. The polished hardwood floors in the main house are dressed with oriental rugs. The colors used in draperies, pillows, bedspreads, and wall covers is opulent and exciting. Jesse is a gourmet cook who loves researching new recipes in his vast kitchen. A hot breakfast is served in the formal dining room. It is a two course event beginning with fresh seasonal fruit, yogurt, coffee (freshly brewed, of course) and a selection of fine teas and juices. The entrée is truly a treat for the palate. Some of the selections are smoked salmon scrambles with hot buttery biscuits, buckwheat and pecan waffles with maple sausage links, Louisiana shrimp Benedict, baked pear French toast with hickory

smoked bacon or an omelet to order. 5 Continents is perfect for the weekend get away or for your friends visiting from out of town. The front parlor is also perfect for a commitment ceremony or wedding. The wedding suite or European suite will fill your senses with happy memories. My favorite season at 5 Continents is Christmas when Jesse turns the house and budget over to Ray Bates to dress the house for this happy season. The Ladies’ Parlor held a twelve foot tall Christmas tree with antique ornaments and a ribbon that ran from the angel on top to the floor below. The mantel was covered in an asymmetrical design of silver, gold, white and crystal decorations which were a joy to the eye. Every angle was exquisitely overdone. The Gentlemen’s Parlor was filled with dozens of nutcrackers of various sizes that covered the mantel and side tables.

Music boxes were also set out with glass containers filled with chestnuts. Another tall tree was placed in the dining room. I had to continually turn around to see all the items placed throughout the rooms and hallways. Garlands ran up the stairs to the second floor of greens and berries with gold ribbons. Decorative arrangement were hung above each suite and walkway. The rooms themselves were so ornate that there was little need for additional Christmas dressing. spotlight The Sixth Annual Ambie Awards at Le Chat Noir By Brian Sands & Patrick Shannon n February 9, Co-Theater Editors Brian Sands and Patrick Shannon presented the Sixth Annual Ambie Awards for theater excellence. Le Chat Noir was packed to overflowing with a fun and festive crowd of theater luminaries, their friends and family members. While we crowned a “Best” in 26 categories (see list below), with nominees of such outstanding caliber, no one was a loser. We also gave out some Special Ambie Awards as noted below as well as many Glammie Awards in categories both tongue-in-cheek and heartfelt. Ambush Magazine, which sponsored the event, is very proud that $1,700 was raised for NOCCA’s Department of Theater. In addition to presenting the “Someone to Watch Out For” Special Awards, Interim President/CEO Kyle Wedberg of the NOCCA Institute spoke about NOCCA’s wide range of programs and how vital such funds are to support those youth who are dedicating themselves to the arts. Many thanks to all our presenters, particularly President of the City Council Jacquelyn Clarkson; WWL-TV’s Angela Hill; OnStage Magazine’s Kathy Finn; and, especially, Broadway star Michael Cerveris (Sweeney Todd, Assassins, Tommy, etc.) who came down to New Orleans from New York just to be part of the ceremony. Armstrong Hotel

ivertown Repertory Theatre recently had a world wide premiere production of a new comedy Armstrong Hotel by Mikko Macchionne. It starred local seasoned actors Becky Allen, Mary Pauley, Rudy Rasmussen, and Kate Adair Labouisse. It was directed by our very talented Dane Rhodes. With a cast and director of such local renown and talent one would expect that the show would have had considerable merit. Unfortunately, it was sheer torture to sit through two hours of such uninteresting writing that we were absolutely shocked and very happy to leave the show after final curtain. Armstrong Hotel, needs a lot of rethinking and rewriting. It ranks among the worst productions I have seen

in over 45 years of patronizing the legitimate theater. The plot concerns itself with two maids in the Armstrong Hotel in New Orleans circa 1984 just before the New Orleans World’s Fair. They are sisters. When not working they hide away in a little suite in the hotel and look at TV and talk and complain about their past lives referencing certain old, long gone New Orleans establishments. One of them has a secret. She has slept with the husband of the other. Well, as pedants advise us there are only so many plots that can be used in the theater and they are used, over and over again... But what makes them seem so occasionally wonderful is how they are written and staged and performed. The performances of Becky Allen playing Josie LaSalle as a near perfect Y’at, was nearly perfect as was Mary Pauley, who played the sister, Mickie LaSalle. What else could one expect from these actresses? That’s a role they have played a thousand times, especially the fantabulous local living legendary Y’at, Ms. Allen. And the performance of Randy Rasmussen as an over sexed hotel employee named Sam was as funny as he is in real life - and that’s funny. His scene between a little hippy-like street whore with whom he tried to have sex was hilarious. As was the wonderfully skillful performance of the little sex kitten he picks up, Kate Adair Labouisse, who bounced around the bed as Tiffany, no doubt a unique and expensive creation from the sex department of Tiffany’s in NYC, if there were such a thing. But her performance was priceless if not a real high gloss item from a jewelry store known for it’s good taste. So why didn’t this play work? Was it in

the direction of one of our best local director/performers, Dane Rhodes? Perhaps. There was the use of a down stage platform upon which the bedroom suite in which the LaSalle sisters played most of their scenes was an awkward bit of set use. The platform astonished and distracted the audience by rolling from left to right and back again across the stage for various scenes, none of which seemed to make any sense nor add to the appreciation of the play. Or was it the very slow, slow pacing? Or how miss Allen appeared to have no legs as she sat in certain positions on one of the two single beds in that secret suite? Or was it the lighting which seemed to be so pedestrian and uninspired, all of these items coming from director Dane Rhodes vision. Or was it just a badly thought out and poorly written play? Mostly the latter, although I have only seen four other such dull productions in four decades of going to the theater in America. At least Armstrong Hotel does have that distinction.

Disney’s Beauty And The Beast

he sets and costumes were beautiful, the singing and acting was excellent and the choreography was wonderful. What are we talking about? Well, none other than the JPAS recent production of Disney’s Beauty and The Beast at the Jefferson Performing Arts Center. The theater of over 1000 seats was sold out which is good except for the fact that most locals have no understanding or knowledge of theater etiquette. It’s wonderful that so many families took their adorable little boys and girls to see this lovely show; but they should be taught to pee before the opening and during the intermission. And they should be given a heavy tranquilizer or a sip of wine or something to keep them in their seats and not walking up and down the aisles. Trying to concentrate on the lovely production was like seeing someone stage a musical at the airport during a Mardi Gras weekend with the Little Rascals Parade marching about. Other than these distractions, the JPAS production was extremely well done. Musical Director and Uber talent Alan Payne directed the JPAS Broadway Pit Orchestra with wonderful aplomb, bringing out a big big Broadway sound with style and sensitivity. Robert Mulholland directed the enormous cast with professionalism and Donna Clavijo did Musical Direction more than equal to the task. Tara A. Brewer’s choreography was a lot of fun to see and done so well by so many very good performers, all of which made this big show a really big show in every aspect of theatrical magic. More than memorable among a cast of memorable performers were Frances Bordlee as Belle; Turner Crumbly as The Beast; Keith Warren as Gaston; Scott Sauber as Lumiere; L. Jeffery Maertorell as Cogsworth; Janet Shea as Mrs. Potts; Wayne Gosoulin as Maurice; Matias J. Grau, III, as Lefou; Jennifer Delatte as Madame La Grande Bouche; Jeff Haffner as M’sieur D’Arque, and Jonathan May as Chip. It’s a wonderful thing that the Jefferson Performing Arts Society is able to bring such large and luscious Broadway Musicals to out town and to do it so well.

Dying City

outhern Rep’s recent production of Christopher Shinn’s Dying City was a masterpiece of directorial and acting restraint. Once again we were able to experience another cutting edge play in a high quality production. To quote the good synopsis of the plot from the program, Dying City is a theater goers play requiring a lot of concentration. “The plot concerns a young female therapist, Kelly whose husband Craig was killed in Iraq. A year later, Kelly is attempting to move on when Craig’s twin brother, Peter, arrives unbidden and unannounced. An actor and a star, Peter’s just walked off-stage mid-performance. Although he seems to have everything, what Peter needs only Kelly can give. In a taut, unique structure, we jump between this reunion and Craig and Kelly’s final revelatory night together.” The direction of Julie Hamburg was faultless. Peter McElligott, playing the roles of both brothers, Craig and Peter was inspired and Angelena Swords as Kelly was at the top of her talent. Needless to say, this compelling and singularly unique play was done on a chic set by Geoffrey Hall, with lights by Marty Sachs and costumes by Kellie Grengs. Sound was by Mike Singleton. The overall effect of this daunting production was pure theater at its best. Nothing less than we have come to expect from our own Southern Repertory Theatre.

Romeo & Juliet - The Westside Story

he Actors Theater of New Orleans is currently running a mish-mash-makeup of pieces of Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet and Bernstein’s musical Westside Story - a modern adaptation/version of the play; and concocted and mixed together and directed by that irrepressible talent Rene J. F. Piazza. This farcical adaptation of two classics of theater makes for good family fun. Who doesn’t know the story of Romeo and Juliet, two teenagers from another age, each from a family that hates the other murderously. The fall in love and “accidently” end up dying from poison and a rapier. Only Mr. Piazza could combine these two plays in such a way as to create moments of laughter from everything but a pratfall and the old slip on a banana routine. Combine Shakespeare’s tragedy with Bernstein’s music and a stage full of adolescent aspiring actors and you get an often times comedy of the ridiculous by Piazza. [continued on 16]

ere are some snacks that are quick and easy for the parade season. They can be made ahead and served in just a few minutes, heated in the microwave or served cold. Just remember snacks can keep you fueled up with much needed food while on the go.

QUESADILLAS 3 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened 9 (8-inch) flour tortillas 4 cups Monterey Jack cheese 12 slices bacon, cooked and crumbles 1 tomato, seeded and chopped 4 pickled jalapenos, finely chopped 4 teaspoons ground cumin 2 1/4 cups salsa Spread butter on I side each tortilla. Place tortillas butter side down on ungreased baking sheets, set aside. Combine cheese and next four ingredients; spoon evenly over half of each tortilla. Fold tortillas in half, press lightly. Bake at 400 degrees for five minutes, turn quesadillas, and bake five minutes more or until cheese melts and tortillas are lightly browned. Cut into wedges. Spoon salsa over quesadillas and serve. Yield: nine servings.

SPICY BUFFALO WINGS 3 pounds chicken drummette ¾ cups butter ½ cup hot sauce 1 (1-ounce) envelope onion soup mix 1 ½ tablespoons cayenne 1 (6-ounce) bottle blue cheese dressing Place chicken on a rack of a broiler pan; set aside. Melt butter in a small saucepan; add hot sauce, soup mix and cayenne. Stir well. Brush chicken drummettes with half of the butter mixture. Bake at 375 degrees for thirty minutes. Remove from oven and turn chicken, and brush with remaining butter mixture. Bake fifteen more minutes or until tender. Serve warm with blue cheese dressing and chilled celery sticks.

1 (2 ¼-ounce) can sliced ripe olives, drained 2/3 cup chopped green onions 1 clove garlic, crushed ¼ teaspoon seasoned salt 6 (9-inch) flour tortillas Combine first eight ingredients. Spread ½ cup mixture over each tortilla; roll up tortillas jelly roll fashion. Wrap each separately in plastic wrap. Chill two to three hours, Unwrap each roll and if desired cut off ends, Cut each roll into ten slices. Secure pinwheels with tooth picks. Yield: five dozen

RASPBERRY BRIE IN RYE 2 (7-inch round) loafs rye bread 1 15-ounce) round Brie cheese ½ cup seedless raspberry jam ½ cup sliced almonds Using a large serrated knife, slice off about ½ inch from top of bread. Place Brie on top of bread; trace around outer edge of cheese with a knife. Remove cheese and set aside. Using trace mark as a guide, cut bread vertically two inches deep, discard bread leaving a 6x2-inch cavity. Cut second loaf of bread into one inch squares. Slice rind from top of cheese. Place cheese in bread cavity, spread with jam, and sprinkle with almonds. Place prepared loaf on a baking sheet. Bake uncovered at 325 degrees for twenty-five minutes.

BLUE CHEESE SPREAD 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened 1 (4-ounce) package blue cheese ½ cup finely chopped pecans, toasted and divided Process cream cheese and blue cheese in a food processor twenty seconds or until smooth. Stir in ¼ cup pecans. Using a 1 ½ cup bowl with plastic wrap and press cream cheese mixture into bowl. Chill eight hours. Unmold cheese, remove plastic wrap. Roll outside of cheese mold in remaining pecans. Serve with apple slices.

SHRIMP AND OLIVE SPREAD 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened 1 1 (7-ounce) can shrimp, drained, rinsed, and chopped 6 pimento stuffed olives, chopped 2 tablespoons minced onion 2 tablespoons mayonnaise 1 teaspoon lemon juice ¼ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

¼ teaspoon hot sauce ¼ teaspoon garlic powder Combine all ingredients, stirring well. Cover and chill. Serve with assorted crackers.

HOT CRABMEAT DIP 3 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese 1 small onion, grated ½ cup mayonnaise ½ teaspoon garlic powder ½ teaspoon salt ¾ teaspoon pepper ¼ cup dry white wine 1 tablespoon prepared mustard 1 tablespoon horseradish 1 pound fresh crabmeat, drained 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives 2 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped Combine first nine ingredients in a saucepan; cook stirring constantly, over medium heat until cream cheese melts. Stir in crabmeat, chives, and parsley. Transfer to a chafing dish and keep warm.

BAKED ARTICHOKE DIP 1 (14-ounce) can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese ¾ cup mayonnaise 1 clove garlic, minced ¼ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce ¼ teaspoon hot sauce ¼ cup mayonnaise 1 clove garlic, minced Combine all ingredients stirring well; spoon into a lightly greased 1-quart casserole. Bake, uncovered, for twenty minutes at 350 degrees or until bubbly. Serve with melba toast.

HUMMUS 4 cloves garlic 1 (19-ounce) can garbanzo beans ¼ cup lemon juice ¼ teaspoon salt [continued on 18]

trodding the boards ...from 14 While not an example of great theater by any means, the skewed and screwed up version of these plays allows for young aspiring actors to get a chance to do their thing on stage and get to know all about the legitimate theater. Playing their parts with every thing but squeaky voices and lots of energy and the brave attititude of the young are Charles Regnard as Tybalt, Zak Moses (Bernardo), Justin Blanchard (Mercutio), Ryan McCarty (Riff), Kevin Songy (Prince of Verona & Jerry Zinger), Gerrit Hagen/Robert Facio (Friar Lawrence), Danny Marin (Announcer’s Voice), Erin Frederic (Nurse) Grace Vogel (Juliet), Carly Ferguson (Maria), Dylan Young (Romeo) and Brett Pineda (Tony). Playing their parts with voices that have long since lost their squeaks to the squeaks in their knees were the adults in this solid production who gave voluminous performances in their equally voluminous bejeweled costumes and crowns were Rene J. F. Piazza (Lord Capulet), Jack Quarles, Jr. (Lord Montague), Viki Lovelace (Lady Capulet), and Starr Mason (Lady Montague). Everyone seems to have a lot of fun doing their roles “over the top” in most cases and the nearly full house got a lot of laughs that evening. Sets were by Mr. Piazza with costumes and props by Chelle Ambrose.

We’re excited to welcome you back to Oz! I am excited to come back! I was in New Orleans for Mardi Gras a couple years ago. I have finally recovered from that weekend and I’m ready to have fun again! What do you love most about New Orleans? The energy. New Orleans has a special energy that is not felt in other cities. It’s also a music-loving city so I always feel right at home. You spin all over the world. Beside New Orleans, which cities rank highest in your book? I have a special place in my heart for New York and Montreal. I also love Paris and Rome. Rome is very romantic and Paris is beautiful. But if I were to pick one city as my absolute favorite, I would have to say Miami. It’s truly paradise in America. Your parties helped put Miami on the map. Do people still associate you with

Ingrid Casares and Liquid? I wish more people knew about my years with Liquid! It was ten years ago, which is hard for me to believe today. It was such a great era and had a lot to do with the launch of my career. I am still friends with Ingrid and will always be grateful to her for believing in me as a talent. Of course, the most popular fan of Club Liquid was the Material Girl herself. Do you remember the first time you met Madonna? Yes, I will never forget it. It was Thanksgiving 1998 and I was visiting Ingrid in Miami. Madonna was with Ingrid at Liquid and Victor Calderone was the DJ. We started talking a little bit about the new album she had coming out, Ray of Light. Fast forward a few years later and you were spinning her wedding to Guy Ritchie! Yeah, I’m not really a wedding DJ but for Madonna, I made the exception. Will you spin at her wedding to NY Yankee A-Rod? I don’t know anything about Madonna and A-Rod. Hey, it’s all about new beginnings, right? That leads nicely to your new cd – Genesis. What was the genesis of Genesis? Genesis is a New Years Day party that I do every year in Miami and it’s an amazing event. This year I decided to document it and produce a compilation to capture the party.

How did you select the songs to be featured on the album? The song selections were chosen from the party. I tried to capture some of the biggest showstompers. You mentioned in a recent interview that one song on the album, “Alright”, has special significance to you because it’s about taking something bad and turning it positive. 2008 was a growing year for me and I had to make a lot of personal changes but in the end it’s always fine. That’s what “Alright” is about...everything’s gonna be alright. Any plans to continue the popular Dance Culture albums? Yes. I will definitely release more albums in that series. What are you cooking up for 2009? I’m launching my own clothing line, plus developing my record label. Albums, touring… now a clothing line and record label? Where do you find the time? I literally don’t stop. But Tracy, in Genesis, we learn that on the seventh day, even God rested. My seventh day will come. But right now, I’m barely out of day one! out & about in mobile By Bob Brunson appy Mardi Gras!!!! It’s queer and it’s here and it was kicked off in style... right where Mardi Gras began in Mobile, Alabama. The first parade hit the streets tonight only to be topped by one of the best Mardi Gras Balls in existence with the theme Out of Africa. The Order of Osiris, the only GLBT mystic Mardi Gras organization in Mobile and the longest standing in Alabama has been in existence for 28 years. I can’t tell you too much about this organization (it is mystic and members aren’t supposed to talk) but they are growing and changing and moving forward to better the Mobile, Alabama GLBT community. There are many critics out there that seem to want to slit the throat of progress, but I would say “put your money where your mouth is and get involved. If you don’t like the way something is done... stop criticizing and work to make changes yourself!” This being said, I will comment briefly on the most talked about subjects... negative and positive. Keep in mind these are direct responses from those attending the ball and intended only for constructive criticism. 1. Upgrade the liquor!!! Cheap liquor sucks! (Get sponsors... Smirnoff and Absolut along with many other liquor companies support the GLBT Community and the many attendees are saying they would pay more for their tickets to get the good stuff). 2. Shorten the tableau... (these queens can walk a little faster, talk a little less, and shorten their music) who gives a damn how long it took to make that

costume, the people are here to socialize and party... sometimes less is more (you go Stevie WOOF)! 3. Lighten up! Going with tales is okay, but we are GAY and creativity was born in our community. Let the folks of Alabama add some color to their tuxedos! To hell with prohibition and the rules and regulations of the past. 21st Century is here. No cameras anyway so who gives a sh_ _? 4. The Costumes for the members are FABULOUS and getting better each year! 5. The live entertainment by the incredible band REWIND was awesome (a great new addition). Kudos to David and Donny and all the people who put this ball together this year, and to each and every individual who has worked to put it together in the past because all of your hard work and efforts have enabled it to evolve and become what it is today. Keep up the good work. And WOW, 2000 tickets sold... A SOLD OUT MARDI GRAS BALL, in the midst of what is being called the worst economy ever!! I wish I could show you pictures from the ball, but again it is mystic (a private and secret organization where cameras are not allowed) and the only pictures I have are from happy ball attendees in the clubs after the White Tie Event. I hear a new king and queen were chosen (rumor has it well deserved) and next year’s ball will begin its planning soon. Things keep changing so I would say, “Don’t miss out on getting your tickets early for next year’s ball.” Those of you who

suppose an apology is in order here. Several columns ago, I wrote about this wonderful and sexy trainer who was working with one of my neighbors, and I think I called him Walter. Well, I did find out later that the name is Walker, and that name is so much more erotically sensual than Walter. Don’t you agree? He may not be a Texas Ranger, but he is just about the most lusciously delicious specimen of human kind that I can think of at this point. He not only has the body to die for (or at least lust yourself silly over), but he has such a charming personality. His smile is so nice that I do believe he could charm the pants off anyone. Since he is straight, I don’t have to even imagine this happening to me (or for me), but some fair lady out there must be lingering in blissful tranquility over the thought of even bedding this magnificent stud. I really don’t know too much about him, but I can assure you that his personality is one of the best you will find no matter who you happen to meet in life. Walker has that special trait that can capture you without even realizing the power of his influence on you. It’s difficult to explain, but whether you are straight or gay, he comes across as simply a very nice and sincere human being. I know I would like to get to know him better, but since I’m lazy and don’t work out that much, I’m afraid that may never happen. He is a trainer and a damn good one, I’m told. I just wish he would allow me to train him in the art of erotic massage.

However, a sit-down conversation over dinner would be nice. I’m sure he has had an interesting life, and I would love to hear it directly from him. Oh, yes, I’ve been told some things, but I don’t listen to idle chatter. When you want the truth in any topic of conversation, you need to go to the source. This is one beautiful and sexy source that I would like to tap into (nothing sexual unfortunately) and find out exactly what makes him tick. If you were to meet this guy, you would immediately see why I am entranced with his very being. He’s wonderful. That’s a basic and simple truth. He is just simply an outstanding human being, and having him as a friend is a definite plus for anyone. Maybe I’ll start working out again, but I’d probably have to get over the lust first, and that isn’t possible at this point in my life. Trust me. here’s only one week left until Fat Tuesday is here. The biggest celebrations of the year are already upon us, and they’ll culminate on Mardi Gras, the wildest party in Acadiana. Downtown Lafayette will be teaming with people. Everywhere you look, there’ll be food and fun and everything else that makes South Louisiana world famous. The Sound Factory and its Back Side will begin Mardi Gras at the crack of dawn for all those dedicated partiers who like to enjoy mimosas before the first parade. And as the day progresses, so do the good times. By 2am, even the most ardent Carnival fans are ready for a much needed rest. But until the official beginning of Lent, John and Mark and the rest of the crew at Sound Factory and Back Side will make sure the

hot tails of red stick ...from 36 someone as much as I do for Walter. I met him many years ago at Hibiscus Bookstore, and it was an immediate friendship connection. You can tell immediately when this happens, and you can also feel that comfortable air of goodness which is present. It signals a lasting beauty and offers you a comfort zone that you find only with good friendships. We had a big laugh at the recent weather situation. He’s over in warm Florida which got down to 20 degrees whereas it barely reached 32 here in Baton Rouge. I told him he needed to move back to the tropics, but I didn’t want to stress the point too much because I’ve seen it get below 20 – in fact 10 degrees – right here in historic old Red Stick. Walter always brings me gifts. It is something that he enjoys, and these items are always unique and border on being expensive. This time, it was a fine hand-painted porcelain art piece featuring a beautiful hibiscus with a hummingbird hovering over it. The artist has turned out lots of great pieces, but this one provides an enduring expression of love, friendship, sympathy, and gratitude. It’s actually a panorama of human emotions for which flowers as you know are universal symbols. This was such a nice and thoughtful gift from a friend, and it now occupies a prominent spot in my home. It tells me daily what a wonderful friend I have in Walter – a kind, warm, considerate, and loving man.

Willing Wonders

everal people I know fall into this category. Some I know quite well. Others I hope to get to know even better over time. One of the best in this group of friends is a hot and gorgeous stud named John. This ex-New Yorker can literally charm you right off your feet – really. If you go to the Crescent City, you can find him at JohnPaul’s. He is not only an outstanding friend but an excellent bartender. I’ve known John for a number of years and probably would never have met him if it hadn’t been for my great buddy Mark. These two are partners, and that partnership is one of the most enduring and beautiful ones that I can relate to at this point. If the term “made for each other” is accurate, it would definitely apply to these two. Now that doesn’t stop me from loving both equally. However, as much as they might be alike, they are also totally different, or at least I think so. In a way, I have to say I know Mark even better, but with John it is a newer kind of knowledge. He just simply glows with enthusiasm in everything he does. I love his smile, the gorgeous face, and – yes – that wonderful body. Goodness! I need to quit right now. Just thinking about this super stud is creating erotic images in my mind. What an exceptional and beautiful friend I have in John. I love this guy, and I so enjoyed seeing him again last week after the Krewe du Vieux parade in the Crescent City when I stopped in at JohnPaul’s. I also stopped in to see Kenneth too at his home in the Marigny. This intelligent and wonderful man was my house guest due to Katrina’s wrath, and even though I knew him before, this storm brought a new feeling of true friendship to both of us. I do so admire everything he does. He is one of the finest authors you will ever come to know, and I am so

In fact, I knew Kenneth when he taught at the University of New Orleans, but I didn’t really come to know him personally until I attended the Tennessee Williams seminar all those years ago in Key West. This was before he started the one in New Orleans. In fact, this was one of the three best Key West trips I have ever experienced. The other two involved all the authors at the mystery writers seminar and the Ernest Hemingway affair when I grew a beard and entered the look-alike contest. What a hoot that was! At any rate, I’m going back to Kenneth’s very soon so we can sit back and have a toddy or two and talk writing. Besides, I have something special to give to him, and I was in such a rush getting to the Krewe du Vieux festivities that I failed to bring along the gift. After all, when it is this time of the year, you have to rush down to get those Haydel’s king cakes, the best of the very best. I’ll make it up to Kenneth when I see him again, and I think I’ll even toss in a king cake too. D.B. is another gorgeous stud that I could never tire of being around. I recall our first meeting so well. It was at a Lords of Leather meeting, and he sat in the front row right in front of me. (I was at the officer’s table.) My view of that wonderful crotch just sent me into absolute sexual heaven. In fact, I was afraid to stand up for fear of being “caught with the evidence showing.” Well, last Saturday, I just had to see this beautiful one again, so that was another reason for going to JohnPaul’s. I was even blessed with the chance to chat with D.B.’s other half, the equally sexy Billy. What a nice couple they appear to be. D.B. works in the upstairs area of JohnPaul’s, and this is just simply one of the most wonderful and relaxing places you will find in all of New Orleans. And you have this sexy bartender to tend to your needs for a thirst quencher. When I came home, I wrote down some notes on what I wanted to say in this column, but I also went to my royalty display case to look once more at the fantastic cobalt blue Mardi Gras mask that D.B. got me when he first moved to New Orleans. It was a gift of appreciation for having him as one of my honored guests at the Lords of Leather Bal Masque. It was his first Mardi Gras ball, and he was so pleased that I invited him that he got me this mask. It is one of my earthly treasures that occupies this honored place in my home. I do like this man – from that first crotch viewing to the last. Did I say that? I also ran into Jerry, who many of you may recall owned the Third Street Tavern, across from the old Mirror Lounge, in Red Stick. I totally had him confused at first with someone else, but it didn’t take long for more wonderful memories to return. He had such a great little bar here, but it just wasn’t meant to be. He moved on but he is hoping to open another bar soon, location unknown at this point in time. However, I do have to say that Jerry has always had good taste in men. Chad is a perfect example of this. I’m not sure how they met, but, here again, they seem to be made for each other. Chad has such a great personality, and when you put him with Jerry, it is evident that this is a combination of lasting beauty. They are so good together, and it was a pleasure being in their company. I have to say also that it is always such a joy to see John and Paul. What they have done for New Orleans and the gay and lesbian community with the opening of the great JohnPaul’s bar is amazing. If Charlene was still alive, she would be so proud of what they have done. This is a landmark in the Crescent City, and John and Paul deserve so much credit for what they have accomplished. To top it all off, they are just the best in my list of growing friendships. I am so happy to have made their acquaintance, and I look forward to seeing them often as I make it back into the area. Let me say that I have to congratulate all those minor krewes who make up the major Krewe du Vieux. This was one of the best little parades I’ve ever attended. It was orderly. It was funny. It was very

enjoyable. I had been to this one before, but with all the bal masques I’ve been involved with over the years, the parades just went by the wayside. This year I was determined to get back to the basics – no balls (well, the staged varieties anyway) and more contacts by way of parades, parties, and kicking up my heels a little more. This parade certainly lifted my spirits, and then there was John and D.B. and John and Paul and Billy and Dennis – and even Terri. It was my first time to visit Terri at AllWays, formerly Cowpokes. I really can’t say I like the name change, but that is beside the point. Maybe there weren’t enough cowboys around. Whatever – I stopped by to see if Timm was around, and earlier in the afternoon he was across the lake. I did stop back by after the parade to see if he was there, but I failed to run into him. It was nice to meet Terri, and I’m sure I’ll go back. I didn’t have time to go into the Phoenix, but I asked the doorman if George and Danny were there, and he said no. This is another great duo of friends who I haven’t seen in a while, and that is about to be corrected. It is just difficult to get everything done in one day, and that is my excuse for not settling in for a long visit with Ernie. I thought I saw Mickey riding a bicycle prior to the parade, but it was only someone who favored him. That is another friend who is about to see me again. Things changed with Katrina. I’m just now getting back into the swing of things, and I’m even thinking about renting an apartment once more so I can crash in the city and not have to drive back to Baton Rouge. I don’t like to impose on friends to stay over at night, so I usually take my nondrinking friend Sam with me in case I need someone to escort me home. I miss my little apartment I had in the French Quarter, next to the home where Lyle Saxon – one of my favorite authors lived. It was my writing retreat and such a joy to be there when the rain was falling on the banana trees in the private patio and the sexy Russ Minshew was my neighbor running around shirtless (and with less sometimes) to my gleeful approval. Gosh, I hadn’t thought of Russ in such a long time, and he is no longer with us except in memories. The last time I talked to him was a phone call during a stopover in Atlanta. I didn’t even know he had passed away until recently. He was an outstanding weatherman and one of the most handsome guys you could ever hope to meet. Isn’t it wonderful to have great friends and beautiful memories?

I just wanted to forward on a copy of the report of the Strategic Planning Meeting held by the LGBT Community Center earlier this month. Thanks very much to Julia for compiling the notes for us. I encourage everyone who volunteered for a task to see to its completion. Together, we made worthy goals that should lead toward a thriving Center. I left the meeting feeling very positive about the future of the Community Center. However, after reading Toni’s column in the latest Ambush, I feel that all of the hard work we’ve done has been rendered worthless. The doubts it has sown have also made the task facing the Center even more daunting. Since my appointment in October 2005, I have done everything in my power to rebuild the Community Center. I know that my fellow Board members, most of whom were elected in 2006, have done nothing less. Those efforts have not been sufficient nor have they been appreciated. I have therefore tendered my resignation as a member of the Board of the Directors. Joining me in tendering their resignations are: Dave Haynik, Co-Chair Charlotte Klasson, Treasurer Shawn Johnson, Secretary I wish the remaining the Board and membership all the best. You should know that the last Ambush article was written before the planning meeting. Our dead-

lines usually run two weeks before delivery of the paper. However, when Julie and I left the planning meeting we did not have great hope for the reorganization of the Center. When getting into the car after the meeting, I said , I am not hopeful, and Julie agreed. When Julie called to tell me about your resignation from the Center, she said, Mary is the one person that we hoped would not resign. I agreed with her. We were told that Charlotte did not do the job of treasurer and did not know how to do the job. That was good reason for her resignation. In the past months, I have seen that Dave also does not do the job he was elected to do. He is an attractive young man and I like him very much but he is not co-chair material. He always takes a back seat at events instead of a leadership position. As for the secretary, I don’t even know who this is. Do I appreciate what the Board does? Yes, I do. I also believe that the Board in general is not doing their job. I do appreciate Allen for making plans for a fund-raiser. He has taken a leadership position. He is a strong thinker and strong member of the Board. If an article written before the planning session can cause you to doubt yourself, they you are not the leader that Julie and I thought you were. That is sad because it means we have misplaced our confidence. The article that will come out at the same time as your letter tells of the Center’s new events to bring attention to itself. It also tells how the Center has several thousand dollars that it did not have at the time of the last article. If you wish to quit, do not blame it on me. If the job is too big for you, do not blame it on me. That will be the subject of my article three weeks from today. The Board is to blame if the Center fails. It is the Board’s responsibility to keep the Center going not an article or interested party like myself or Julie. Yours is not the first Board to take heat.
