alloween’s in New Orleans, a 501c(3) company supporting Project Lazarus in New Orleans, celebrates its 25th year of fund-raising events in New Orleans, held Oct. 23-26 this year. The weekend will kick-off once again inside of Saks Fifth Avenue with Saks Loves the Silver Screen. The party will feature premium open bar, hors d’oeuvres, a DJ, entertainment, the Halloween silent auction and, of course, shopping at Saks! Saks will donate 10% of sales to Project Lazarus, valid all weekend (Oct. 23-26, 2008). Friday night the place to be in New Orleans will be Shiny Disco Balls at Generations Hall with not one, but two DJs and not one, but two dance floors! DJ Roland Belmares and DJ Chad Guidry will keep you moving all night long and the DC Cowboys will return to New Orleans for a rare Friday night performance. This party will be open bar and for the first time ever, will feature a VIP Host Lounge on Friday night. Better rest up for Saturday’s main event, Silver Party, at The Sugar Mill. One of the largest costume mandatory parties in the country will not disappoint. Headlined by DJ Brett Henrichsen of MasterBeat with lighting by Bryan Holcombe. The midnight show should not be missed, and this year will feature THE GREATEST MOMENTS IN HALLOWEEN IN NEW ORLEANS’ HISTORY and a performance by Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu from San Francisco. The Louisiana State Gay Rodeo Association (LSGRA) will be hosting the International Gay Rodeo Association’s 24th Annual Convention and 2009 Royalty Competition at the New Orleans Marriott Wednesday, Oct. 29 – Sunday, Nov. 2. The Convention, their annual business meeting, will draw approximately 250 attendees from the 28 associations across the US and Canada that make up IGRA – that’s right – 250+ cowboys and cowgirls converging on the Big Easy for Halloween Weekend (and they think they’re gonna get business done???) ! This year, the IGRA Royalty Competition is being held in conjunction with Convention. The 2008 Royalty Team includes Miss IGRA 2008 Janet Jenkins (aka James Jenkins), CGRA (Colorado); Mr. IGRA 2008 Gary Rushton, AGRA (Arizona); and Mr. IGRA 1st Runner Up 2008 Randy Edlin, TGRA (Texas). To compete for one of 4 IGRA Royalty Titles (Mr. Miss, Ms. and MisTer), a contestant must be a current royalty title holder from their respective association. hile world-famous for its nightlife, New Orleans’ Bourbon Street was a fashionable address more than a century and a half ago and remains a splendid place to live. On Sunday, Nov. 2, five private homes in the Bourbon Street corridor will be opened to the public for the annual Treasures of Bourbon Street house tour to give outsiders a chance to see how people live in this unique urban neighborhood. The homes will be on view from 1 to 5pm. Tickets ($15 per person) must be purchased by 3:30pm on the day of the tour at 729 Dumaine St. or 1111 Bourbon St. The event is being sponsored by the non-profit Historic Bourbon Street Foundation which strives to preserve the residential heritage of Bourbon Street. The tour will feature: 729 Dumaine St. - A small gem of Victorian architecture furnished with contemporary pieces and an art collection, including paintings by the artist owner. The brick walled patio includes a Bonsai collection.

The ground floor of the building, true to French Quarter tradition, has been occupied by a corner grocery since the early 1900s. LA/SPCA Celebrates 120 Years in NOLA with StarStudded Benefit Nov. 15

The much-anticipated 2008 Howling Success fund-raiser, themed The Great Catsby: A Roaring 20’s Tribute to 120 Years of the LA/SPCA, is Saturday, Nov. 15. It will be held in the unique setting of the new Dorothy Dorsett Brown LA/SPCA Campus, located at 1700 Mardi Gras Boulevard in New Orleans. Against an event backdrop rivaling the dazzling parties of Gatsby himself - with lively music and dancing, spirited games, sumptuous food and drink, live and silent auctions, even a ‘canine second line’ - guests are promised abundant frivolity and fanfare. The new LA/SPCA Campus, which opened its doors in May 2007 after the

Japonica Street facility was destroyed during Hurricane Katrina, is a state-ofthe-art shelter located on ten acres in New Orleans. Guests will have the opportunity to tour the Shelter during the event and get a glimpse of this model facility that provides care and essential medical services for thousands of homeless and unwanted animals each year. Event Rental will transform the grounds of the LA/SPCA Campus into a spectacular Roaring 20’s venue, and entertainment will include two of New Orleans’s most beloved and celebrated musicians. Deacon John and the Ivories will perform for the Gala, and Jeremy Davenport will kick things off at the Patron Party. A Star is Re-Born

explains, “When I was still a teenager, I was at a friend’s birthday party and after singing Over the Rainbow someone said ‘You sounded exactly like Judy Garland.’ And the seed was planted.” ”I had wanted to be a pop singer,” Bailey continues, “but at the time everything was changing in show biz with the Rock’n’Roll revolution. So I thought to myself, ‘If I can’t make it as a male singer...’” Bailey, who had trained for operatic singing, spoke to a friend who advised him, “You should go for it—what do you have to lose?” ”I really studied Garland’s physical appearance, her movements and her voice,” says Bailey, “and premiered the act at a little Los Angeles club. At first people thought I was lip-synching.” An agent saw him and booked him into the Flamingo Hotel’s lounge in Las Vegas. In two weeks, all the other town’s performers, after they were done with their acts, were coming to see Bailey’s show—at 4 in the morning! ”I had a great time,” reminisces Bailey. “I slowly worked my way up the totem pole to the main stages. I was so proud to have people I respected and who knew Garland come back stage and say admiring things about the act.” Hollywood took notice which led to appearances on The Tonight Show (14 times!), The Ed Sullivan Show, The Carol Burnett Show, Night Court (in which he played a transgendered friend of John Larroquette) and an especially memorable turn on Here’s Lucy as the irrepressible Diller. He has performed at Carnegie Hall and The London Palladium, at the Superbowl and the Olympics, and for Prince Charles & Princess Diana. When told that it seems as though he’s had a charmed life, Bailey laughs. “I’ve had my ups and downs,” he replied, “but I’m a survivor.” ”I’ve been very fortunate in being given the gift that I have. Using your own voice, you create the illusion that you are performing as some of the most famous female entertainers in the world—Barbra Streisand, Peggy Lee and even that funny gal, Phyllis Diller. You’re still appearing in a small club in L.A. but your fame has begun to spread. And one night, the biggest star of all, the mainstay of your act is in your audience. On that night when Jim Bailey was told Judy Garland was out front, he got totally paranoid. “I can’t do it,” he said to anyone backstage who would listen. “But then I went out and ‘did’ Judy and saw her enjoying herself out of the corner of my eye and heard her little laugh and knew it was all right.” And then when the show was over, she came on stage. “‘Darling,’ she said to me, ‘let’s sing something.’ and she launched into Bye, Bye, Blackbird.” ”When we were done, with the audience wildly applauding, she looked into my eyes and softly said, ‘Do call me. I’m so lonely.’ and she whispered her phone number in my ear,” Bailey recalls. “I’ll never forget it.” Bailey did call her. “We chatted and she invited me to her house. Mahi-Mahi Supper

utumn has indeed arrived, but our fish supply is still abundant so I am back into a little seafood supper once again. I do love seafood anytime of the year. Here are some wonderful recipes that make a great meal together. ANGELS ON HORSEBACK ½ cup all purpose flour ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoons pepper 1 pint oysters, rinsed and drained 12 pieces bacon, cut in half peanut oil

Combine first three ingredients in a shallow dish. Dredge oysters in flour mixture. Wrap each oyster with a bacon piece, and secure with a wooden pick. Pour oil to a depth of one inch in a deep cast iron skillet; heat to 350 degrees. Fry oysters, in batches about five minutes or until bacon is cooked. Drain on paper towels. Serve hot. Yield: six servings of four per person. CITRUS – ALMOND SALAD 1/3 cup vegetable oil 2 teaspoons grated grapefruit rind ½ cup fresh grapefruit juice 1 envelope Italian dressing mix

2 grape fruits, peeled and sectioned 2 oranges, peeled and sectioned 1 (six ounce) package baby spinach 2 (five ounce) packages mixed salad greens 2 ribs celery, sliced 1 green bell pepper, chopped 2 avocados, peeled and sliced 1 cup sweet and spicy Almonds Whisk together first four ingredients; cover and chill, if desired. Combine grapefruit and next six ingredients in a large bowl. Add citrus dressing, tossing to coat. Sprinkle with sweet and spicy Almonds. Yield: six servings. MOJITOS A Cuban cooler that has fast become a favorite in the states. Make these one at a time using key limes for the best taste, but regular lime juice works well.

2 tablespoons sugar (I use Splenda) 15 fresh mint leaves ¼ cup white rum 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice ¼ cup club soda, chilled ½ cup ice Place sugar and mint leaves in a two cup measuring cup; crush mint with a wooden spoon. Add rum and juice; stir until sugar dissolves. Just before serving, stir in club soda. Place ice in an 8ounce glass, pour mint mixture over ice. Garnish with a lime wedge. BROILED MAHI-MAHI WITH PARSLEYED TOMATOES 2 medium onions, sliced 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tomatoes, seeded and chopped 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped ¼ cup white wine 1 tablespoon tomato paste 2 garlic cloves, chopped ½ teaspoon salt, divided ½ teaspoon pepper, divided 6 (6-8 ounce) mahi-mahi fillets 1 (4-ounce) package crumbled feta cheese Garnish: lemon slices. Sauté sliced onions in hot olive oil over medium-high heat eight minutes or until tender. Add chopped tomatoes, next four ingredients, and ¼ teaspoon each salt, and pepper. Simmer, stirring occasionally, five minutes. Set onion and tomatoes mixture aside. Place fish in a single layer on a lightly greased rack in an aluminum foil-lined broiling pan, sprinkle with remaining salt and pepper. Broil 5 ½ inches from heat eight minutes or until fish flakes. Spoon onion-and-tomato mixture evenly onto a platter; top with fish fillets. Sprinkle evenly with feta cheese, and garnish with lemon. Yield: six servings. LEMON ORZO 6 cups chicken broth 16 ounces uncooked orzo ¼ cup butter 2 tablespoons fresh grated lemon rind 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 ½ cups fresh grated Parmesan cheese ½ teaspoon pepper Bring broth to a boil in a Dutch oven. Stir in orzo; cook, uncovered, eleven minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally, to prevent sticking. Drain. Melt butter in same pan. Add orzo and the rest of the ingredients. Stir gently just until cheese melts. Serve hot. Yield: six to eight servings. APRICOT-CHEESE RUM TARTS 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened 1 ½ cups sifted powdered sugar, divided [continued on Main-24]

The Bug

he Bug by Richard Strand is not about giant roaches in a post Katrina city, thank god, it’s about computer bugs that disrupt the mindless bureaucrats in a factory that makes some kind of electronic gizmos, or more so it’s a about a worker who refuses to be transferred from his assembly line job and has to face three robotic females who work in the office of the big boss and insist on keeping him from speaking with the man. They have the mind sets of by the book machines such as we can even today find at City Hall in New Orleans. Mindless idiots who go around in circles and loops like the well done background projection of the play. It’s a comedy about a very serious situation that suggests the world is ruled by computers or machines, an old theme but one well presented in this excellent production by the Loyola University Department of Theater and Dance in the Lower Depths Theater. cookin' w/auntie dee ...from M-20 1 teaspoon rum flavoring 1 (17-ounce) package frozen puff pastry sheets, thawed ½ cup apricot preserves 1 egg yolk, beaten 1 tablespoon milk vegetable cooking spray Beat cream cheese at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy. Add one cup sugar and rum flavoring; beat until smooth. Cut each sheet of puff pastry into four squares. Spoon cream cheese mixture evenly into each square of pastry; top each with 1 tablespoon of apricot preserves. Combine egg yolk and milk in a small bowl; stir well. Brush edges of pastry squares lightly with egg mixture. Fold each square of pastry into a triangle; press edges together with a fork to seal. Place tarts on a baking sheet lightly coated with cooking spray. Brush tarts with remaining egg mixture. Bake at 400 degrees for about fifteen minutes or until lightly browned and puffed. With smooth flowing direction by Benjamin Clement and a set that was so chic and clever that it became another character in the play. This clever set consisting of three desks and chairs in front of a backdrop of a looping projection of white squiggles was created by Geoffrey Hall who also did the lighting design. Robert Self did a great white noise and new age type of sound and Kellie Grengs did the stylish costumes. The acting was faultless as we got to enjoy the work of Joshua Eichorn as Dennis Post; Rebecca Elizabeth. Hollingsworth as Linda Taylor, Britanny Chandler as Davida Rajeski, and Cynthia Davila as Kimberly Miles and Mark Kropp as David Hanks. This was a production of high artistic value with every theatrical element in place to make it a work of art not soon to be forgotten.

All Shook Up

hile the rock opera Rent was rattling the rafters of Le Petit Theatre with its poignant and musically explosive scenes and semi-arias, across the river in Westwego, music from the 50s of the Elvis Presley era was shaking up their stage with lots of pelvic thrusting and good old boy meets girl non-gay (more or lest) love lusting with an exquisitely perfect production of All Shook Up “a rock and roll retelling” of Shakespears’s Twelfth Night. This charming show was a comedy of mistaken identities and confused young lovers set in 1950s small town America. A hip swinging and pelvic thrusting young man named Chad arrives on his

motor bike in black leather jacket and tight jeans and manages to turn a small town and all its eligible young ladies into swooning cow-eyed love crazed admirers. He somewhat resembles Elvis Presley except that the actor doing this role was much more handsome, that actor being a buffed and muscular Richard Arnold, who did the role with a sweet but sexy charm, lots of charisma, and sang like a butch angel such songs as All Shook Up, Jailhouse Rock, Heartbreak Hotel, It’s Now or Never, and Burning Love to name five of a total of about 25. Libby Tatum in the role of the young girl mechanic Natalie who falls in love with Chad when she gets into male drag so to speak, the comedy becomes intense as Chad doesn’t know if he should or should not kiss her/him, after she/ he becomes his best friend as a boy. Played by Miss Tatum with wide eyed sweetness and a great deal of convincing acting, she made this role amusing and just a little edgy for poor old Chad, who just can’t understand why or how he Joey can be in love with his best buddy, his new sidekick.. Of course all’s well that ends well and this delightful show closes with a happy resolution as the real sex of those involved is exposed, so to speak and Chad can kiss his best buddy who is really the girl mechanic we meet in the first act.

he recent and awesome production of Rent, the rock opera inspired by Puccini’s grand opera La Boheme as done at that old dowager of community theaters in America, Le Petit, was a total hit that shook the rafters and waddled the old

lady’s butt more than when our town’s most legendary director, Stocker Fontelieu produced on that same stage, the dyke-riddled drama The Killing of Sister George decades ago. I’m not going into the plot details except to say it’s about artistic bohemians and love and courage and young deaths and regrets just like the Puccini opera which is basically about the same things. If you don’t get this comment you should not be reading this review or perhaps you should learn more about opera and theater. hey walked silently back towards Kevin’s apartment, Dale’s arm draped casually over the older man’s shoulder. Kevin’s arm loosely wound around Dale’s slim waist. The world seemed far away and quite frankly no one even bothered to look oddly in their direction, the French Quarter was anything if not accepting. Something happened in the physic of the throngs of straight people who wandered down this street of unbridled lust, they seemed to lose their prejudices and adopted the policy of live and let live. Well maybe not all of them, but most it seemed to stop, because harassment was becoming almost a past art form. Oh there were still a good number of the religious right here to fight sin and corruption, but most people now a days ignored them just the same as they did the same sex couples walking among them. Turning onto Royal Street, they stopped at a few of the art galleries to trodding the boards ...from M-24 excellent lighting with Nancy Macko. There would have been no show without these great talents. Now for the good stuff, the performers. I was totally overwhelmed and amazed that a community theater with local actors would pull off such a wallop of a good and professional high quality production. And this was the first production of this show done in any community theater anywhere in the U.S.A. after the recent closing in NYC. Astounding performances were given by Joey Taranto (Roger), Christoper Woods (Mark), Christopher Bentivegna (Tom) Troy Andrus (Benjamin) Paris Robertson (Joanne), Roy Haylock (Angel), Idella Johnson (Mimi), Katie Lynn Cotaya (Mark;s mom & others), Stephan Tureaud (Caroler, jr. Jefferson, others), Michaela A. Harrison (Mrs. Jefferson, others), Scott Sauber (Gordon & others), Bryan Wager (Steve & others), James St. Juniors (Paul/others), Brandi Cotogno Lopez (Alexi Darling, others), Danielle Harrell Scheib (Marisa, a cop & others) Outstanding and spotlighted in my memory were Idella Johnson as Mimi, Paris Robertson as Joanne and Leslie Limberg as Maureen. Ms. Limberg, no longer a Botero model, but now a svelte and gorgeous young woman, even gave us a glimpse of her ass in one scene and her body profile was stunning. She also brought the house down with her

view some of the more erotic pieces on display. After viewing one such sculpture Dale made the comment that he would not mind getting Kevin in one of the most impossible sexual positions on display. To which Kevin stated that if he even attained the said pose it would more than likely be during his final encounter on this earth. They laughed like two small children sharing a dirty joke at that. Looking into the window, Kevin noticed the figure of the same man he had seen outside of Petunias standing at the entrance to the bar in the Royal Orleans Hotel, but when he turned to confirm that it was the same guy, there was no one there. Good God, he thought to himself, am I seeing ghosts, experiencing the super natural? He laughed to himself about this ridiculous assumption. “What are you still giggling about?” Kevin questioned. “I seem to be seeing things that aren’t there.” "They say the Quarter’s the most haunted place in the United States.” awesome number, Tango Maureen with Christopher Woods (Mark) as did Mimi (Idella Johnson) in her solo number Out Tonight. Ms. Limberg and Ms. Johnson are vivid stars in the ascendent. There was not a weak moment in this rock musical nor was there a weak player. The whole became a glorious tribute to the work and the memory of Jonathan Larson, who wrote the whole thing and died before opening night. Ah, la vie boheme!

Jim Fitzmorris Puts Marlin Gusman In A Hurt Locker

im Fitzmorris is one of our town’s most literate playwrights. He’s not always successful in his efforts, but who is? He has also proven to be a raconteur of high quality as I witnessed recently during his one-man show, Jim Fitzmorris Puts Marlin Gusman In A Hurt Locker which he did in the back room theater at Michael Martin’s Voodoo Mystere Lounge on N. Rampart Street. That night he was in full agitation and story-telling mode as he sat at a desk in the venue, talking about his home town, NOLA, occasionally looking down at a notebook, perhaps to keep on track. But this did not help, as Mr. Fitzmorris is so completely well stocked with satirical stories about his hometown and its many characters that he can easily become side tracked by a reference to one of his relatives or

“Really? And just whom says such things?” Kevin inquired. “Why the tour guides who pass by our windows at night. Don’t you hear them?” “I try not to.” “Your loss, I guess. So are these beings you’re seeing as handsome as the stranger you saw outside the restaurant earlier?” “I thought it was the same person.” “Maybe you do know him and he’s hoping you’ll ditch me somewhere along the way.” Kevin laughed right out loud on that one. "Well he’s out of luck, I’m keeping you." And that was the first time that Kevin had stated his desire out loud for Dale to hear. Dale smiled broadly; it was just what he had been waiting to hear. Dale knew that he really wanted to settle down and was certain Kevin would be a fine match for him. He was after all stable, he wasn’t living a lie, and he was just what he was, nothing more and nothing less. Unlike Dale he was not hiding anything, or so Dale thought, but then, how many of us are completely truthful with each other? They walked along in silence from then until they reached the apartment, Kevin looking around every so often to see if the stranger was indeed following them, but there was no one. No one

But every digression is a wonder and a delight. No one can talk about New Orleans like Mr. Fitzmorris. His skewed sense of satire is sharp and totally applicable and his style if both bombastic at moments and softly sensitive when least expected .makes for good theater. He has a unique way with language that no one could ever duplicate. His knowledge of New Orleans is extensive and his ability to make something as simple as driving back into town from some western des-

lurking in the shadows, no one following in their footsteps. Kevin took the keys out and opened the gateway to the courtyard and Dale stepped in, turning around after taking just a step he pulled Kevin up close to him and planted a kiss on his lips. Startled just slightly Kevin stepped back. “What was that for?” “That was for making me the happiest guy in the entire French Quarter, hell, in all of New Orleans, maybe in the entire world.” “And how did I accomplish that?’ Dale threw his arms around Kevin’s neck. “By saying you were going to keep me. You meant that didn’t you. I mean it just wasn’t something you said out of the blue, was it?” “Something I said out of the blue? Now you’re sounding like a bit of dialogue from a cheap porno novel. Of course I meant it. I’ve wanted to ask you in a more conventional way, sorry, but it just came out, for some reason the moment just felt right. How about it, you want to try it?” “Us, as a committed couple?” “Sure, why not, we certainly fit together well.” “In all possible ways.” With that said he took Kevin’s hand and almost dragged him into the apartment. “Slow down babe, neither one of us is going anywhere soon. We have plenty of time.” “And I don’t want to waste any of it.” And he didn’t, he was out of his clothing almost before the sentence escaped his mouth and down on his knees in front of Kevin, tugging his pants down. Kevin grabbed Dale’s hair and as gently as he could, tried to pull Dale up off him, but Dale didn’t budge a bit, he only had one thing on his mind and he wasn’t going to be swayed away from it. Kevin was distracted he had to admit to himself, distracted by the man he had seen earlier, he had looked somehow awfully familiar to him, but he just could not place the face. He was sure that he knew that face, it was as if they had [continued on Main-29]

tination until he enters the expressway over the swamps that lead into New Orleans onto the I-10 highway is absolutely amazing. It’s pure poetry to hear him describe his feelings as he enters the wonder world and mystery of the environs of New Orleans. His is and has become a treasure of our town’s most able and talented promoters whether he uses his gift for satire of his depth of poetic expressions. I was amazed and delighted to witness it all that night. Even thought we never got to anything about Marlin Gusman and I’m still wondering what a “Hurt Locker” is but hope I never find out on a personal basis. If he appears again anywhere in our town, don’t miss him. You will see and feel New Orleans in a totally different and wonderful manner after listening to him describe it from his own unique vision.

one last song ...from Main-26 spent sometime, somewhere together, but trying as hard as he could not remember. Nothing was coming into his head; he was drawing a complete blank. Now he was forgetting completely about the entire incident as Dale continued to work his magical tongue, he stopped trying to coax him upward and now was just rubbing Dale’s hair and thrusting into him. Dale stood up abruptly and literally tore Kevin’s shirt off his body and forced him to his knees. “Kiss it.” He commanded and Kevin obeyed. About an hour later as they sat watching television, well Dale was watching it; Kevin was glancing through some ole photo albums he had brought with him from Florida. Looking carefully as the young faces he had taken pictures with in his younger days. Yes, he was looking to see if anyone would lead him to his mystery man. He was sure the answer would be in one of the pictures, he was so sure it would be, but he already had thumbed through about fifteen years of his past and still nothing. He really had no idea why he was so obsessed with this, but it was driving him crazy. “You want a cocktail?” Dale was standing above him, he almost jumped out of his skin, and he had no idea he had gotten up from in front of the television. Glancing over at it, he saw the reason why, a commercial had come on. Dale was not interested in the advertisements and often would surf the other channels while they were on. In a way this annoyed Kevin a little but not so much as for him to comment on it. Closing the album on his lap he replied that he would love a gin and tonic. Dale leaned over, kissing him lightly "As you wish my prince,” and went to make them. "What have you been reading?” he asked as he was making their drinks. “Reading? I wasn’t reading anything, just looking at some pictures from years past. Friends, family, just browsing down memory lane." ”How poetic you sound right now. Like some professor, some where. Here you are my heart.” He handed him his drink, “Sorry there are no limes left, you want me to run and get some?” “Lord no, this is more than likely the only one I’ll have before bed.” Dale sat back in the chair and went back to watching his program. Kevin opened the photo album in his lap. He had not marked the page he had just been looking at so it just opened randomly, and suddenly like a bolt of lightening, it hit him, there he was the stranger he had seen this evening outside the restaurant and later on the way home across from the art shop on Royal Street. The picture was almost twenty years old, and of course the young man had grown and matured, but the facial features were the same, and the blonde hair was still full, his body lean and hard in the picture was now more developed. Developed to the point he was almost twice the size, not over weight, but layered with muscle. Kenny in the almost too small red Speedo stared back at him through time, the picture was beginning to fade with age, but he was still the sexiest thing Kevin had ever had. Kenny the guy who brought him out so long ago. The first man to ever introduce him to the art of same sex love making. The man who made him the sexpert he had grown to be. He was positive that the guy in this picture and the man who had been staring at him this evening were one and the same. His stomach tightened just thinking about what they had done on that swim years ago on the small isle of Crandon Park. The heat in his loins was spreading and he could feel himself starting to get aroused. Without thinking much about what he was doing he quickly unclasped the top of his pants and unzipped his fly. He closed his eyes and walked a step or two a little further down memory lane. He could feel Kenny’s lips around him, moist and yearning, sliding and teasing. He could

feel the excitement building just as it had those many years ago, rising to the peak of no return. Instinctively he reached down to pull Kenny in closer and when he opened his eyes he had Dale’s head between his legs. He let out a large moan and lay back on the couch spent. Later that evening, when they had both gone to bed, he held Dale tightly in his arms, but he dreamt of Kenny. Kenny and his first time. Some where with in the back of his mind he began to wonder if indeed it was Kenny, and if it was why was he here in New Orleans? Had fate led him here and was it that that had led him down Saint Louis Street this evening as he was in Petunias dining by the window? What ever it didn’t matter, he was sure they would see each other soon, if that was what was meant to he. In his dreams he could hear a popular tune from the past playing and he hummed along with ONE LAST SONG as he fell into a deep sleep. Conclusion next issue.

Katrina Ravished Louisiana Gets a Little Help from the Art Industry

t has been more than a century since Louisiana has seen an international art exhibition of this kind. Close to 81 artists from around the world will converge on the City of New Orleans to help re-establish the economic support that visitors bring to our town. Throughout the city, 100-thousand square feet will be transformed into a magnificent gallery of visual art, while boosting the city’s image as a cultural destination. Artist Mark Bradford will create a life size wooden ark in the lower ninth ward. Bradford will use the shells of destroyed homes and other discarded pieces of wood to create a symbolization of Noah’s Ark and its goal to protect ninth ward residents from the rising waters of Hurricane Katrina. Among other artist, Paul Villinski from New York will transform a Fema trailer into a “green” powered mobile artist’s studio. Other artists will also introduce new developments in the art industry. Curator and Director Dan Cameron plans to bring the art show to New Orleans every two years thus, creating the largest biennial of international contemporary art ever organized in the United States. He modeled the idea in the tradition of the biennials in Venice and Sao Paola. “I wanted to do something special for the City of New Orleans to aid them in a full recovery from the affects of Hurricane Katrina. This international art exhibit called Prospect.1 will attract the world’s most affluent art buyers. Buyers who will be exposed to New Orleans cultural assets and experience the city’s finest restaurant, hotels, and other amenities,” said Curator Dan Cameron. The exhibition will open November 1, 2008 and run through January 18, 2009 at 15 locations throughout the city, creating opportunities for visitors to spend money in less-trafficked areas. Cameron hopes during the exhibition’s 11 week run, the show will draw attention, creative energy, and boost economic activity throughout the City of New Orleans. The event is free to the public and is expected to draw an estimated 100thousand or more visitors. Organizers plan to spend $3.5 million to mount the museum-quality international exhibition. andy Trahan was telling me that I need to park my car inside my garage because there has been gas theft on the Northshore and it is spreading south into Metairie. Containers of gasoline have been stolen from carports and utility sheds. He told me that one man was gas siphoned from his car but didn’t notice it until he was on his way driving to work via the Causeway Bridge. The car started to slow and jerk. Luckily, the man was able to glide into a crossover where he hoped to get emergency service. As he rolled to a stop, he realized that a bee was inside the car. He tried to roll down the window to let it out but before he could get the window down the bee said, stop, I think I can help you. Suddenly, there was a swarm of bees. Frightened the man froze in his seat. Open your gas tank, the bee said. The man flipped a switch on the dash board and the swarm of bees flew into the gas tank. Moments later the bee flew back into the car and said, OK, try to start the engine. The man turned the key and the engine fired up. He checked the gas gauge and saw that it had moved from empty to a quarter full. What did you do? demanded the man in shocked relief. Well, said the bee, haven’t you heard of BP? Besides having the talent to make me laugh and forget whatever problem I’ve decided to worry about at the time, Randy is also a good baker. Recently he sent me home from Mandeville with a huge slice of home made “7up” cake (his mama’s recipe) with creamy pineapple icing. It was the icing like Grandma used to cook with lots of sugar and crushed pineapple. The cake was three layers. I had some for supper that night, breakfast the next morning and a snack after the Saints Game to celebrate our win. I wanted to eat the entire huge chunk of cake as soon as I returned home but I was still full from a late lunch. For the first time, I enjoyed the delicious food at the Sesame Inn in Mandeville. This Chinese style restaurant is located on the service road that leads to the Causeway Bridge. It is a short distance from Trey Yen which is where I was headed but they close at 2pm on Saturday afternoon so I drove on, and lucked onto the Sesame Inn. For perhaps 20 minutes, I was the only customer so I started a conversation with the young man acting as host. He had been speaking Chinese with a waiter. I asked whether he was speaking Mandarin or Cantonese. He was shocked that an Occidental knew the

difference. We talked about the roll Christian fundamentalist play in National government. The conversation was just getting hot when my shrimp and eggplant arrived. I opted to eat. I have to tell you that the egg roll was not greasy. It was very tasty. The seafood soup was excellent. I recommend it. My only complaint is the same as always, the vegetables were not cut small enough. The entrée was as good as 5 Happiness has ever prepared. I always get the eggplant and pork there. The entire experience was a delight. You need to try the Sesame Inn. It is worth the drive across the Lake. Another recommendation I have for you is a movie that is opening in New Orleans soon. The Secret Life of Bees is a must see for everyone. I guess you’ve seen the ads on TV. It is getting lots of press and rightly so. The story is dramatic and tender. It addresses bigotry and abuse during the early days of the fight for civil rights, and is set in South Carolina. It also addresses the dysfunctional relationship between a father and daughter, and their reconciliation. The growth of the characters is beautiful laid out for the viewer. The cast is exceptional. The story is the first in years that has brought tears to my eyes. There are also some good laughs, and great music. That’s all I have to say about bees. I do have more to say about restaurants. Lately, I’ve found myself suggesting Zeke’s in Metairie when friends want to go out to lunch or supper. Just recently Dr. Amy’s new husband Bud and I had a great meal and bottle of wine at Zeke’s. But my favorite for comfort food has always been La Peniche. Paul Killgore and I used to go there every week. Before that, in fact, years before that, I used to go there to visit with Katherine. She sold the place to Lori, and it has continued to be the perfect family spot – Gay family spot especially. Just in case you don’t know, La Peniche is now open 24 hours a day. Ronnie Kennemer owner of RHD (Restoration Hair Design) and my hairdresser, and I visited La Peniche after church. They had one of their luscious cream soups and I had to try a cup. Their specials are better than ever – like waffles stuffed with strawberries and whipped cream. No, I did not order that but I wanted to. I think I was feeling guilty about eating so much home made “7up” cake. Ronnie and I did split a decadent killer chocolate cake with whipped cream. I had the chance to visit with both Lori and Bob. Bob is still doing his

beautiful art work. He has gone from painting on canvas to painting on boxes. I can hardly wait to see one. They will make wonderful Christmas gifts. You should go by La Peniche to ask him about them. As soon as I finish writing this note to you and getting it e-mailed to Rip, I will be going over to visit with Julie Thompson. She has had eye surgery and I am going over to visit and to continue our newest tradition – wrapping her Christmas gifts. This started last year and when she learned that I enjoy wrapping gifts, she asked if I would do it this year. Of course I said, yes. Julie as I wrote in my last column has been named by PFLAG National as the new Regional Director. Her first job will be to help start a PFLAG chapter in Lafayette. At the last PFLAG New Or-

leans meeting, we had three visitors from Lafayette – Jason, Joey and Jason. The guys are great and they were very helpful with the family of a Gay man who had just come out. Coming out is very difficult at best for both the individual and their family. PFLAG tries to help both. Over the years, I have been involved with several organizations. Although I miss being active in LAGPAC, a great political organization that has become inactive, PFLAG does so much good that I enjoy being a part of their work more than any other group. Our support meetings are the second Thursday of every month. I hope you will join us if you ever need our help. That’s about it for this issue. We had come to the consecration when a woman staggered into church shouting ‘can you help me! Help me please!’ I got up and moved into the body of the church to speak with her so that the priest could continue with the mass. The woman looked ordinary but felt very odd indeed – I could tell there was something very wrong and began to prepare my usual ‘how to deal with a psychiatric case’ routine. She said to me in a loud voice – trying to get the attention of the priest – ‘I’ve been raped by the antichrist!’ ‘Oh God! Do I need this?’ I thought, and walked the woman outside and sat with her on the steps of the church feeling very uncomfortable and now quite sure she was schizo-

hroughout the nation, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities are more united than ever behind the election of Barack Obama for President of the United States on November 4. Below are new and original statements delivered by several notable LGBT leaders from across America and several battleground states including Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, Missouri, Illinois, Massachusetts and the nation’s capital.

Honorable Tammy Baldwin U.S. Representative Madison, Wisconsin I cannot think of a more exciting, hopeful, and promising time in the lives of LGBT Americans than right now. We have a Presidential nominee in Barack Obama who really understands what we are striving for. This isn’t just a New Direction ... it’s a whole new world of opportunities. This June, we formed the first LGBT Equality Caucus in Congress. The very existence of an LGBT Equality Caucus in Congress makes a strong statement about the values this Congress and this nation hold dear. Beyond symbolism, our Caucus will engage in substantive work to achieve the extension of equal rights, the repeal of discriminatory laws, the elimination of hate-motivated violence, and the improved health and well being for all regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. But to be successful, we in Congress must work in partnership with the laid his hand upon her brow, something extraordinary happened. There, no explanations offered, just a glimpse of some of my experiences – there is more in heaven and earth than I have answers for, all I know is life is all the more interesting for having questions unanswered. Texas, I am acutely aware of what’s at stake in this election. If Barack Obama becomes our next President, the path is open for us to continue to make progress toward equal rights, including the right not to face employment discrimination, the right to marry and adopt, the right to serve in the military, and all the other elements of full equality. If John McCain is elected, further progress will grind to a halt. He opposes all legislative protections of our rights. And he has promised to appoint the kind of Supreme Court Justices who will oppose interpreting the Constitution to protect our rights. Those McCain Justices may even end up overruling Lawrence, returning us to a time when it was considered perfectly constitutional to prosecute us for sodomy and to discriminate against us because being openly gay amounted to an admission of criminality. I, for one, don’t want to live in a country where we have no rights and where LGBT citizens and are forced to rely on whatever “tolerance” we are accorded by our employers, our governors and our fellow citizens. “Tolerance” is the word Sarah Palin chose in the debate when she was trying not to appear too anti-gay. Jeanette Mott Oxford State Representative - 59th MO House District St. Louis, Missouri In the recent vice presidential debate here in St. Louis, Governor Sarah Palin hastened to assure lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans that “I am tolerant.” That does not reassure me in the least that I would find equal protections in a McCain-Palin administration. Instead, I take offense. As my friend Pamela puts it: “You tolerate a stench. You respect me.” The word tolerance can signal that we have patience for or are willing to indulge those whose beliefs or practices differ from our own. But something else can be heard when those in categories that have power and privilege in U.S. society (white persons, males, Christians, heterosexuals, etc.) express a willingness to “tolerate” those who experience discrimination and barriers to success due to some part of their identity (People of Color, women, non-Christians, gay/lesbian/ bisexual/transgender persons, etc.). What too often is heard is internalized superiority, a belief that the status quo is “normal” and that the privileged group has the right to determine what the targeted or disadvantaged group will be “allowed” to do. I look forward to a world where the diversity of humanity will be celebrated instead of tolerated. That is the key to building a world in which every child can thrive and grow toward wholeness and happiness. I believe we will move a step closer to that goal by electing Barack Obama president of the United States on November 4.

One night when I was fifteen the local news had a segment about a police raid of a Boston gay bar. I grabbed one of my little sisters’ crayons and hurriedly wrote the name of the bar down. I carried that slip of paper in my pocket for years - it gave me such comfort that somewhere there were people like me. In 2008, we have a brave candidate, Barack Obama, that opposes these bans, which he calls “decisive and unnecessary.” Barack Obama is willing to stand up for me and include me in his vision of America. They show a love for each other in a subtle way. It isn’t the gushing and false adoration displayed by many. They are partners, pure and simple. They just go together, and you can tell by their actions that they share a love that is long lasting and monogamous. Their future looks bright, and they deserve respect for their mutual admiration of each other. Just being around them is a joy. Mutual admiration is definitely something that applies to John and Phil too. I’ve known both of these guys for many years, and until it happened, I never saw it as a possibility for them to become a couple. It was right there in front of me, and when it did come together, it was as if it was meant to be – and it was. I think both of these guys are perhaps the finest and most sincere you are ever going to meet. Whether I’m dining with them or just hearing each tell about their new adventure together, I see the longevity factor. Phil is someone John was looking for and never quite found. Like so many others, he seemed doomed to be alone, and then – zap – along comes Phil. It was like a miracle to see the immediate connection. Sometimes you don’t have to know a couple for years and years. It can and does happen when you least expect it. And when you learn that they have taken the time to go out to San Francisco to exchange their vows, you know they mean business. Brandon and Robert are two exceptional guys. They share togetherness in everything they do, and they project this positive relationship vibe to everyone in their presence. It is nice to be able to look on them and see this on a daily basis. They are definitely in it for the long haul. There are several other couples that need to be spotlighted here, but that will come later. Love doesn’t go away. It just gets stronger with time.

n just over a week is one of the wildest, most festive nights of the year, and Downtown Lafayette will be in the heart of the celebrations. It’s the one time of year when you can be whoever you want to be. Halloween and the gay community just go hand in hand, and this year it actually falls on a weekend, so their’s no excuse for you to miss the parties. So dust off your wig and other extravagant attire and get ready for a night like no other. The Sound Factory and Back Side’s yearly Halloween Extravaganza should be even more festive than usual. John and Mark and the rest of the crew are already working tirelessly to make sure everything is perfect. From the party favors to the Costume Contest, they’re making sure that they are the place to be this Halloween. And if it’s anything like past years, they’ll be the most happening place in the Downtown. While you’re getting ready for the big Halloween Celebration, don’t forget about Sound Factory and Back Sides’ brand new weekly lineup. Every Monday you can compete in the weekly Pool Tournament at Back Side. If you’re good with a stick, come by and show off your talent. Whether you win or lose, it’ s always a great time. Tuesdays are Karaoke Night at Sound Factory, hosted by the ever popular Chad Evans. Chad has as much personality as he does talent. His charisma really breathes new life into the karaoke experience. And he doesn’t limit the kinds of music he offers. He has everything from oldies and country to dance and rap. So if you haven’t been out lately on a Tuesday night or you think Karaoke Night is just the same old thing, you definitely need to come by. Whether you enjoy being

on stage or simply watching those that do, you’re sure to have an awesome night; Chad will make sure of that. Back by popular demand, Wednesday nights host Lube Wrestling, and while it may yet to be an Olympic sport, it is definitely one of the sexiest events of the week. And of course, you’re always welcome to participate. If you can wrestle, or just like to get all lubed up, come by early and sign up. If you win, there’s always fabulous prizes. Thursday is Lady’s Night at Sound Factory, but if you’re a guy, don’t worry, the Back Side will always have some specials for you too. Friday Nights are the ever popular Dance Party where you can get out on the floor and go wild to some of the best music around. Then on Saturday you can be entertained by their ever popular Show Night. Each week there’ll be special entertainment to liven up the Lafayette Nightlife. And who could forget Sundays with its twelve hours of fun and festivities? It begins at noon on Back Side with their Sunday Lunch Buffet and continues that night with the infamous Drag Races at Sound Factory. By midnight you ’re ready for a good nights sleep since it all starts over again the next day. All in all, Sound Factory and its Back Side make sure that no matter what night of the week you hit the Downtown, there’s always something festive going on. Time is ticking away until the big Halloween Celebration, so you better get to work on your outfits. When Barack was running for the Illinois senate, I met with him to discuss issues of importance to gay, lesbian and transgender Illinoisans. I was impressed not only with his thoughtfulness but his command of the issues. I did not have to do a “Gay 101” with candidate Obama. It was obvious that he knew, socialized and worked with gay people, respected us and cherished us as his friends and colleagues. Most important, he understood the issues and his commitment

LGBT people make to this great country. I know Senator Obama. I know his record on LGBT issues. I know we will be proud to call him Mr. President.

To paraphrase Hillary Clinton: “It’s not who you were for, it’s WHO IS FOR YOU.” I know that Barack Obama will fight for me and all LGBT Americans. There’s a very delicate and fragile balance on the U.S. Supreme Court when it comes to freedom and equality. It stands to reason that the next president will appoint at least one Supreme Court Justice. We need to elect Obama merely to maintain the status quo on the Supreme Court. Think about that. Should the court’s two eldest justices, Stevens and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, retire during Obama’s first term, the LGBT community won’t have more allies on the Courtonly a one-to-one replacement of our previous allies. Obama has to be the person who fills the next openings on the Supreme Court just to preserve the very uncertain equilibrium we have right now. His appointments won’t make us more likely to win cases. They’ll just make us as likely to win as we are today. With even one more radical rightwing judge on the nation’s highest court,

the justice system will swiftly become an ironic misnomer. A McCain administration would be like divorcing a man with a crazy family and then marrying his brother. There’d be a new person in the White House, but what about HUD? What about Justice Department employees with degrees from non-accredited law schools? What about Karl Rove? With McCain, you get the same far-right cronies that have made the last eight years so unbearable. Enough. We’ve got to start over.

Bob Witeck CEO, Witeck-Combs Communications Gay Activist Arlington, Virginia This weekend in Virginia, with nearly 40 members of my family, I celebrated my niece’s marriage. My partner and I happen to be the only gay couple in this tribe, and we were proud to play host to our visitors from 8 states including Pennsylvania, South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland, Indiana, Connecticut, and Hawaii as well as northern Virginia. To a person, with just one exception, each and every one will support and, if old enough, vote for Barack Obama for President on November 4. They vote as Republicans, Independents and lifelong Democrats with the same values and beliefs we share about fairness, equality and inclusion - and we cannot imagine an America any less or any different from our own far-flung and diverse family. For my eight, very young, great nephews and great nieces who played with us this weekend (and we discovered left a smear of chocolate on the wall), I cannot think of any greater gift to leave them than the gift of Barack Obama’s inspiration and leadership for the years to come and the kind of world they are just discovering. Putting yourself first is not always the way to go, but it happens quite often. Lust is fleeting. Love is honorable and lasts forever.
