Memorial Day Weekend in The Big Easy Sure to Bring in Record GLBT Numbers

emorial Day Weekend kicks off the busy GLBT Summer Season here in the Big Easy, and record numbers are expected May 2326 in New Orleans. On Friday, revelers can look for some of the highlights including MASCARa 2008 Hamster Derby at Good Friends Bar, the New Meat Amateur Dance Contest at Corner Pocket, Military Maneuvers at Oz, the LSGRA Beer Bust at the Phoenix, Fetish Fridays Chaps Night at the Eagle and the Starlight Revue at Starlight By The Park. Saturday brings the Poker Run benefiting Pride in the Marigny beginning at The Friendly Bar, Drag Queen Ping Pong to JohnPaul's, MASCARa Spaghetti-Os Wrestling in the Balcony Bar at Lafitte's, the All Boy Review at Corner Pocket, Big Mama & Company at Billy's in Slidell, and The Zoo Revue at Big Daddy's. Sunday highlights include the MASCARa Crawfish Boil at Rawhide, Fleur de Lis Divas Revue at Cowpokes, Petronius' Pub Crawl beginning at JohnPaul's, Bring Your Own Meat BBQ at Starlight, Trash Disco at Lafitte's, Live Brass Jam Session at Cutter's, Show Night at Oz, and Barry Bareass' Bottoms Up Wet Jockey Shorts Contest at Corner Pocket. Monday is a big day with the annual MASCARa Race benefitting NOCCA kicking off at Clover Grill ending with the awards ceremony at Rawhide (see the following story), and the Memorial Day Cookout at Corner Pocket. Throughout the weekend revelers will want to pop into The Country Club for their Memorial Day Weekend Pool Party every day (and it's clothes optional). Then there's DJs Tony B and Karbin playing at the Phoenix, DJs Tim Pflueger and Jason Lanoux spinning at Oz, and DJs Johnny Love and Mike doing the honors at Lafitte's. Ninth Circle is featuring Chris Finland, Karbin and ChazE. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Clover Grill Presents 9th Annual MASCARa benefiting the NOCCA Institute Memorial Day May 26

ASCARa 2008 will be presented by Clover Grill on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, beginning at 2pm in New Orleans at 900 Bourbon Street. The 9th annual event again benefits the NOCCA Institute, which is the non-profit organization which supports NOCCA Riverfront. Over the past eight years, MASCARa has raised nearly

$50,000 for charity. Each contestant in the race is given sponsorship forms and they solicit persons to sponsor them for a given amount of money to be determined by that sponsor. The sponsorship money is to be turned in before the start of the race, when the contestants pick up their tee shirts at Clover Grill. Each participating bar will sponsor a contestant. It will also be open to the general public. Contestants will be provided a tee shirt and should wear a pair of jogging shorts. These will be considered as your under garments. Each contestant will provide a pit crew that will assist them in their transformation at each stop. Each crew will consist of at least two people, one to assist at the present stop and the other to proceed to the next stop. Failure to fully complete any lap’s conditions will result in disqualification. Each contestant and their crew will be required to sign a release from liability form. Those wishing to participate will be required to arrive at Clover Grill no later than 1:30pm the day of the event with their crew to complete registration forms. Lap 1: Race begins at Clover Grill precisely at 2pm (no, not drag time). Here the racers will fuel up with an order of chili cheese fries. The chili cheese fries must be swallowed before continuing. There will be no substitutions. This food lap is not for the faint of heart, nor vegetarians. Lap 2: The contestants will then race across Bourbon Street to Café Lafitte. Here they will put on panty hose supplied by Queen Fashions in the traditional manner, on their legs. They will also put on their high heels which must have a minimum three inch heel. Someone will be there with a ruler to measure the heels. They will rev up their engines with a shot of Peppermint Schnapps. This is a 1 3/4 ounce shot served in a plastic cup. Lap 3: The contestants will run down Dumaine Street, turn left on Burgundy Street and proceed to Rawhide. Here they will put on jewelry consisting of earrings, a necklace, a bracelet and two rings. After this heated third lap they will cool their fueling system with a cold 7 ounce Bud Light. Lap 4: The contestants will then run up St. Ann Street to Good Friends Bar. Here

they will put on make-up. Make-up is to include foundation, lips, eyes (must include false eye lashes provided by Queen Fashions), and painted finger nails provided by Southern Eagle. They will shift gears with a Frozen Separator after all make-up is applied. After their Separator is consumed they will retouch their makeup. Standard press on nails may be used as well as the contestants own nails. Lap 5: The racers will then run up St. Ann Street to the Bourbon Pub where they will put on tits and a bra, grab a hat and a purse and then respark their plugs with a 2 ounce Mind Eraser. The hat will be worn for the final lap, after the wig has been put on. Lap 6: The contestants will then charge across Bourbon Street to Oz, put on a floor length evening gown. They will have their final refueling with a six ounce daiquiri. Lap 7: The contestant will then race down Bourbon Street to Clover Grill, entering in the Dumaine Street entrance. Here they will don their wig and hat. They will then exit out the Bourbon Street entrance. The first contestant out will take their place on the sidewalk where they will be inspected by the judges to see that they have complied with all the requirements of each lap. The first person with all the accompaniments will be declared the winner of Fastest Time. There will be three Categories judged: Fastest Time, Best Drag, and Most Money Collected. Trophies will be awarded in each category. Points will be awarded based on performance in each category, the person who receives the most points will be crowned Ms. MASCARa 2008. All awards will be presented at Rawhide 2010, 740 Burgundy Street at 5pm, following the race. There is no rain date. In the event of rain, run faster!!

love and all things Italian-American in 1950’s New Orleans. Following a record setting preview in January, Shrew returns, featuring Lorenzo Gonzalez and Rebecca Frank reprising their roles as Petrucchio and Kate. After two nights of previews, the show officially opens on May 31st and includes a post-show gala celebrating the Festival’s 15th season. Next on the mainstage is As You Like It (June 26 - July 12). In the magical forest of Arden, Rosalind must become a man to make a man of Orlando. Director Sean Patterson’s re-imagining of Shakespeare’s popular comedy takes place in an urban park of the 1930’s filled with romance. It features the talents of local favorites Trina Beck, James Bartelle, and Lara Grice. The opening night performance on June 28th includes a postshow reception with the cast. Following that will be Twelfth Night (July 23 - July 26). Our high school training

program - All Things Shakespeare! - presents a shipwreck, lost loves, and gender confusion... and that’s only the beginning. Twelfth Night gives us a world where everyone desires the person who doesn’t desire them and demonstrates why Shakespeare’s comedy of confusion is one of his most popular. This year, the Festival continues its crowd pleasing Lagniappe Stage presentations with two new offerings: Mad Wenches, and Wondrous Froward Women (June 4 - July 16): A series of new plays by female playwrights which explore the world of Shakespeare and the age of Elizabeth I will be presented as readings. Vienna to host International AIDS 2010 Conference

ienna, Austria has been chosen to host the XVIII International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2010), the largest international meeting on HIV, where every two years 25,000 participants representing all stakeholders in the global response to HIV meet to assess progress and identify future priorities. AIDS 2010 is organized by the International AIDS Society (IAS), in partnership with government, scientific and civil society partners in Austria and international partners from civil society and the United Nations. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, the IAS is the world’s leading independent association of HIV professionals. “The International AIDS Society and its partners are extremely pleased to partner with the City of Vienna, the Government of Austria and local scientific and community leaders, who have a long history of leadership on HIV issues,” said IAS President-elect, Dr. Julio Montaner, Director of the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS and International Conference Chair for AIDS 2010. “Because the 2010 conference will coincide with the deadline that world leaders set for the goal of providing universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support, all eyes of the world will be upon Vienna.” “Vienna has through history been seen as a crossroads between Western and Eastern Europe, and it will continue to serve that role as host of the conference,” said Dr. Montaner. “The conference is an opportunity to look specifically at the challenges facing the emerging epidemics in Eastern Europe in the context of hardest hit regions around the world and the overall global response.” “The International AIDS Conference is the most important gathering for the release and discussion of scientific, programmatic and policy developments in the global response to HIV/ AIDS. According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), an estimated 150,000 people in Eastern Europe and Central Asia were newly infected with HIV in 2007 bringing the number of people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the region to 1.6 million. This compares with 630,000 PLHIV in 2001, an increase of 150%. Worldwide, an estimated 33.2 million people are living with HIV and more than 2.1 million people died of AIDS in 2007. AIDS 2010 will be held from 18 to 23 July 2010 at the Reed Messe Wien. The conference is organized by the IAS in partnership with a number of international bodies and local partners, including: - UNAIDS, and its co-sponsors - International Council of AIDS Service Organizations (ICASO); - Global Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (GNP+)/ International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (ICW); - two other international civil society partners (to be confirmed at a later date) AIDS 2010 will be the eighteenth in this series of international AIDS conferences. In August 2008, it will be held in Mexico City, Mexico, and the previous meeting was held in Toronto, Canada in 2006. With more than 2,500 international journalists expected to attend, the conference is the single most widely covered health event in the world.

Grease and flour wax paper. Beat butter at medium speed with mixer until creamy; gradually add sugar, beating well. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; add to butter mixture alternating with milk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Mix at medium speed after each addition until well blended. Beat egg whites at high speed until stiff peaks form. Gently fold into flour mixture. Pour into prepared pans. Bake at 350 degrees for twenty minutes or until toothpick inserted into center of cake comes out clean. Cool in pans for ten minutes on wire racks; remove from pans, peel off wax paper. Cool completely on wire racks. Spread Coconut-Bourbon filling between layers and on top off cake. Coconut-Bourbon Filling 1½ cup raisins 1½ cup red candied cherries, halved 1½ cups pecans, coarsely chopped 1½ cups coconut flakes 12 egg yolks, lightly beaten 1¾ cups sugar ¾ cup butter ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup bourbon Place raisins in a small saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil, cover and remove from heat, and let stand five minutes. Drain and pat dry. Combine raisins, cherries, pecans, and coconut in a large bowl; set aside. Combine egg yolks, the next three ingredients in the top of a double boiler; bring water to a boil. Reduce heat to medium; cook, stirring constantly, 20 minutes or until mixture is thick.

Boiled Frosting 1½ cups sugar ½ cup water ½ teaspoon cream of tartar 1/8 teaspoon salt 4 egg whites ½ teaspoon almond extract Combine first four ingredients in a heavy saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is clear. Cook without stirring, until mixture reaches the soft ball stage or registers 240 degrees on a candy thermometer. While syrup is cooking, beat egg whites with an electric mixer until soft peaks form; continue to beat egg whites, adding the hot syrup mixture in a heavy stream. Add almond extract. Beat until stiff peaks form and frosting is thick enough to spread. Yield; seven cups.

akes, I love cake, every kind of cake, there isn’t a single one I have ever tasted that hasn’t caused me to swoon. Of course I have my personal favorites, Red Velvet to name one, but I’ve covered that recipe in an earlier column. The thing I find fascinating is the names of various cakes and their origins. Such as the Lady Baltimore and Lord Baltimore cakes, though the flavors and names are similar they bear no relation to each other. Lady Baltimore cake was first mentioned in the 1906 novel after a friend of the author baked him such a cake. The Lord Baltimore cake was named for the third Lord Baltimore, Charles Calvert.

Add bourbon; stir well. Pour over fruit and nut mixture, stirring well; cool completely. Yield: six cups. Spread boiled frosting on the sides of the cake.

LORD BALTIMORE CAKE ¾ cup shortening 2¼ cups sugar 8 egg yolks 3¾ cups sifted cake flour 1½ tablespoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1 ¾ cups milk ½ teaspoon almond extract ½ teaspoon vanilla extract ½ teaspoon coconut extract Boiled Frosting (recipe above) 1 cup chopped mixed candied fruit 1 cup chopped pecans ½ cup macaroon crumbs (about three cookies crushed) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ teaspoon almond extract Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat shortening at medium speed with an electric mixer until fluffy; gradually add sugar, beating at medium speed 5 to 7 minutes. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating after each one. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; add to shortening mixture alternating with milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix at low speed after each addition until blended Stir in ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, and ½ teaspoon almond extract. Pour batter into three nine inch greased and floured cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for about twenty-five minutes or until wooden tooth pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans on wire racks ten minutes; remove from pans and cool on racks completely. Add coconut extract to boiled frosting for this recipe. Combine 2 cups boiled frosting, candied fruit and remaining ingredients; spread between layers. Spread the rest of the boiled frosting on the sides and top of the cake.

Dr. Joe Melcher was honored this year as the PFLAG Community Star and was awarded a set of engraved bookends which will look lovely in his Xavier University office. Melcher has served as Chair of the Scholarship Committee and Board Member of PFLAG for many years. His guidance and support has aided in years of successful receptions and generous support for GLBT students. Event Co-Chairs were Roy D. Hunt, Jr., a new member of the Board, and long time activist Randy Trahan. Together they gathered an impressive committee of hard working volunteers. Wayne Christenberry, owner of Evergreen Florist, donated his time, exquisite floral arrangements and corsages for the event. The Renew Revue at Le Chat Noir

icky Graham is mad as hell at FEMA, local government, contractors, and everyone else who’s let New Orleans down and even if he may still have to take it, he’s dishing it right back in his newest creation The Renew Revue. Wonderfully limning most residents’ love/hate relationship with his native city, Graham, along with co-author Sean Patterson, wisely keeps Renew Revue all humorous—there’re no maudlin numbers here about overcoming travails and all the other horrors we’ve seen. Thank god, cause after three years of such wailing, enough is enough. And laughter feels so much better than tears. In a series of skits and songs, Graham and Patterson along with their coconspirators Yvette Hargis, Mandy Zirkenbach and composer/arranger Jefferson Turner, take aim at, well, everybody. Among the best is the Trash Can Can in which Sidney Torres (a marvelous Patterson wearing a plastic garbage can), accompanied by a trio of Bourbon Street chanteuses/danseuses, proclaims “I’m the King of Trash/I do it with panache/A sniff of the Quarter/Has the scent of Estee Lauder”; Hargis in Brecht/Weill Surabaya Johnny mode proclaiming vis a vis Ed Blakey’s rebuilding efforts “I’m not bitter but the only thing I see erect is David Vitter”; and Graham, priceless as Jackie Clarkson, offering a new line of Chocolate City chocolates in which the City Hall bonbon is the “darkest chocolate filled with nuts.” There’s also a buoyant Recovery on Robert E. Lee complete with straw hats and an interlocutor; Harry Lee (Patterson) and Al Copeland (Graham) serving moo shu muffalettas and a po’boy pupu platter from their new Cajun Chinese restaurant in Heaven; and one of my favorites because it’s so true, Sinusitis Tango, with music by Dane Evans, that takes into account everything from our flora to toxic mildew that causes eyes to water and noses to run. The entire cast is great with Zirkenbach, who has a purr in her voice slightly reminiscent of Bernadette Peters, first among equals (though it could be that I’m just extra happy to have her jaunty elan back on stage after being away too long). As director, Graham keeps the show going at a steady pace and graciously refrains from giving himself any more air time than any of the other performers. One could quibble that the Christmas Carol number could’ve been cut; after Scrooge in Rouge shouldn’t Graham leave Charles Dickens alone? And the music for the Lee & Copeland bit sounds suspiciously like Graham’s Every Day is Mardi Gras in Heaven but if you’re gonna steal, steal from yourself, right? And if the Broadway South parodies (Fiddler on the Blue Tarp Roof—”Water rose, water set/Water rose, water set/Still

we are waiting on insurance/And it’s been three long years”) are like advanced New York City High School SING entries, they’re still very funny. More seriously, though, Graham ought to rethink all his jibes at the Mexicans who are helping to put this city back together again. Individually, the jokes are amusing; collectively, they border on the racist. Chris Owens is always fair game; migrant workers should perhaps be given a break. That aside, unlike the brooms and mops that are brandished in the opening number You Gotta Do It Yourselves, Graham and Co. uses words and music to make New Orleans a better place. Let’s be thankful that they do.

Varla Jean Merman’s 10th Anniversary Regurgibration at Le Chat Noir

n honor of her ten years as a cabaret/performing artist icon, Varla Jean Merman mounted a compendium of her greatest hits or, as she so

between the buns. Plus, it features Varla ventriloquistly yodeling along with a wiener puppet worthy of Avenue Q—how multitalented is that? Jeff Roberson, the man behind the make-up, has masterfully created a persona so demure and innocent in an ohso-knowing way that it allows for doubleand triple- and quadruple-takes worthy of a Gracie Allen while a tribute to Josephine Baker, performing Le Freak in a banana skirt, makes her the spiritual, if Amazonian, heir to the physical humor of Lucille Ball. Watching Varla/Roberson not only was I continually impressed by how many risks he takes and how they all pay off, but my face literally hurt from laughing and smiling and grinning so hard. Nothing misses its aim in this pitch perfect show, a triumphantly emotional tour of her heart and all the nasty places it’s been. And despite all the illusions, costume changes and mixed media razzmatazz, there’s not a false note, a lagging moment or an unnecessary element in this delicious madness. And when Varla performs her disappearing cheez whiz act, it not only amazes like a stupendous sideshow of yesteryear, but certifies that the line between comedy and tragedy—or is that genius and madness?—is sooooo thin. Varla’s knowing and often insightful material slathered with big gobs of hilarious satire provides a banana peel for

daintily put it, a “Regurgibration” which conjures up all sorts of fluids and projectiles emanating from bodily orifices. Actually, you do have to be careful when Varla’s on stage—if you happen to take a sip of your cocktail just before she comes on in one of her outrageous outfits or makes one of her wicked jokes, said liquid could unavoidably emerge through your nostrils as you succumb to fits of laughter. As imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I figure if Ms. Merman can recycle her acts from the past ten years, then, for this write-up, I can recycle my words from the last four years of reviews of her, especially since they’re all 100% still valid. So here goes– ”Varla’s humor, at once broad yet subtle, fiercely intelligent yet sidesplittingly funny, tickles the funny bone so hard that it hurts. Absolutely nothing is sacred to La Merm as she mixes high & low art to delicious effect, stopping at nothing to amaze and bedazzle her audience. Varla’s awesome multi-octave singing voice is shown off in a brilliantly conceived medley that combines Bizet’s Carmen and Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves as well as another number with a hot dog leitmotif which shamelessly employs every conceivable bit of wordplay for what can be done with that thing that goes

laughs and cotton candy for the heart.” So even as she adds to her brilliant library of videos, which Regurgibration offered before the show began as a minifestival, with Helen Reddy’s Ruby Red Dress/Leave Me Alone which had a chorus line of homeless people referencing Annie, I can only say, “Here’s to Varla’s next ten years—bring her on and let the regurgibrating begin!”

West Side Story at Tulane’s McAlister Auditorium

was excited when the New Orleans Opera Association announced that they would be doing West Side Story to go with its Verdi/ Puccini/Wagner staples. Yet after its recent production, NOOA might want to consider sticking to opera while leaving musicals to Tulane’s Summer Lyric Theatre, whose own 2005 version of WSS stills echoes exultantly in my mind. While it was lovely to hear Bernstein’s score played by a full orchestra, this production remained rather flat. In many ways, Conductor Robert Lyall did a superb job of capturing the lushness of the music, but unlike SLT’s Leonard Raybon, he missed some of its astringency. And that astringency is critical. While this is certainly some of the greatest theater music ever written, I couldn’t help

thinking that without a hip hop, urban score (e.g., the current In The Heights) this music seems more alien to the setting and its streetwise characters than most grand operas do. Thus, Mambo and America still hold up, terrifically, but Tonight and Cool seem a tad precious now. Likewise, whereas Sondheim’s lyrics for Gypsy still shine like jewels, perhaps because that 1959 show portrays an already bygone era or, more importantly, we expect its show biz characters to speak in a certain artsy way, WSS’s too chiseled lyrics tend to feel a bit quaint. None of this, I suspect, would have mattered if the production, like SLT’s, had been up to snuff. But it wasn’t. Director Karen Azenberg, saddled with G. Alan Rusnak’s modular set, which at best looked generic, at worst ugly and cheesy, could not avoid a start-and-stop rhythm for the scenes rather than the cinematic flow that’s called for. And her choreography, inspired by/taken from Jerome Robbins’, did not have the zing that Edmond Kresley, who was in the original Broadway production, brought to SLT’s. Perhaps the Robbins estate should start allowing productions to create their own dance steps so as to give future versions a more contemporary feel. As Tony, Matthew Morgan seemed like he was doing a concert version of the show on a cruise ship. Thom Graham was a few (several?) years older than he should’ve been to make a fully convincing Bernardo. Terra Macleod’s mannered Anita seemed like she was from a bus and truck tour. At least, David Vaughn made a good, if not exceptional, Riff. While Sarah Jane McMahon’s burnished voice was perfect for Maria and she was by far the best element of the production, even she was not as compelling as she was in 2005, the result, no doubt, of playing off of lesser castmates. Ironically, it was some of the smaller roles that made the best impressions. As Action, a member of the Jets, Freddy Ramirez radiated the pizzaz that the leading men lacked. In I Feel Pretty, the voices of local ladies Trina Beck, Brandi Cotogno and Chase Kamata blended gloriously. Kamata was also wonderful in her featured part in America—why wasn’t she cast as Anita, a role in which she was so memorable three years ago? Peter Gabb nicely reprieved his role as the wise and helpful Doc while Kristopher Shaw was suitable ugly as Det. Schrank, revealing society’s hierarchical nature. With West Side Story, NOOA made a worthy attempt to expand its horizons. Better, however, it should stick to Mozart and Rossini.

Raisin at Dillard University

t is a measure of the dedication and supportiveness of New Or leans’ theater community that a Tony-nominated actress recently appeared in a local college production. “Brava!” to B.J. Crosby for taking part in Dillard University’s production of Raisin. That said, this Tony-winning adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun has not aged well in the last 34 years. The highlight of the entertainment was the New Orleans Gay Men’s Chorus. They announced their upcoming schedule for the year. I will gather that information and pass it along to you. For the third year, I have found myself blessed with the ability to sponsor a scholarship. This year as with the last two, my scholarship was awarded to a student in the arts. Kelcy Wilburn is a student of music. She gifted Dr. Melcher and me with copies of her recent CD The Times Compiled. All songs were written and performed by Kelcy. She and her group will be performing at Pride this year. After listening to her music, I recommend that you check your schedules for her time on stage. You will be pleased that you did. Twenty scholarships were awarded this year. Two were $10,000 scholarships to be awarded over four years. These recipients were Ross Gaudet and Joshua Galjour. Another exciting event held in May was the 9th Annual HRC Women’s Event honoring 2008 Equality Award Winner Representative Karen Carter Peterson, Speaker ProTempore Louisiana State Legislature. The event was held at the home of activists Dr. Judy Harris and Regina Matthews. Julie Thompson and I were scheduled to attend but my uncooperative back pain would not allow me the privilege. Julie reported to me early the next morning that the party was a huge success. She was on her way to the airport for a trip to Denver and was not able to give me full details. However, she did say that there was a large group of women in attendance, many of whom had supported the PFLAG scholarship through Mamou, a lesbian discussion group that seeks to promote understanding of homosexuality and the eradication of homophobia. If I don’t start feeling better so that I can get out to these great events, you’ll here me scream from Metairie to the French Quarter. After three weeks, I am still not driving and that is devastating to me. But, hey, good things are coming. The week after 2008 Southern Decadence the New Orleans GLBT community will be host to the North American Convocation of Pro-LGBT Christians, a program of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. This year’s theme is Many Stories, One Voice. On September 4th through 7th between 500 and 1,000 gay and gay supportive people will visit New Orleans to focus on understanding, healing and enriching the lives of all GLBT people. The first meeting of the local committee on May 6th met with representatives from the National Committee to form a solid base. Pastor Darrin Harris, Freedom Fellowship Ministries, and I represented New Orleans. Only days later Darrin and I met with Noel Twilbeck, Executive Director of NO/AIDS Task Force, to elicit help with communications and volunteers. Presently, I am hunting for generous locals that are willing to open their homes to two or more conference visitors. The event will be held at the Marriott on Canal Street and some will not be able to afford the trip and the accommodations. We also need approximately 150 volunteers to assist with registration, hospitality, room monitoring and whatever else comes up at the hotel or during the March to memorialize the people lost during the Upstairs Fire. This is the 35th Anniversary of that horrifying catastrophe. There is a ton of information that I want to share with you but that will have to wait until the next issue. For now, I simply want to invite all churches and organizations to take part in this important Conference. the pink pastor ...from Main-22 must be able to draw nearer to the nature of God or pull away – we must have genuine free will, he cannot force us to love him, we must choose to return his love. Free will is all or nothing, either we have it, in which case God cannot dwell within us unless we ask him to (and there are many ways this happens), or we don’t, in which case we are just robots; as humans we are higher than the angels, as the angels have no choice but to be good - we do! This free will covers everything, as most human suffering is directly or indirectly the consequence of our freedom of choice, or others freedom of choice. This is why suffering has the potential to be transformed and redeemed by our spiritual lives. Only a cruel God would have no remedy for our poor choices. Life is about more than charting a course around pain – and the greatest blessings in my life have occurred through the greatest challenges – times in my life that were often heavy with pain and suffering. This brings us to the second point – growth. We all have choices, when we persuade ourselves that we don’t we are denying the full glory of humanity. When struck with pain, grief, sorrow, illness or disaster we have choices as to what we do with it; we have the potential to grow, and thrive, or to wither and become bitter and diminished. God always stands ready to lift us up and comfort us, we always have the choice to grasp that comfort, and when we can no longer choose ourselves I believe God steps in and gathers us into health and wholeness. True healing, true health and true wholeness await us after death, and in my previous job as a hospice chaplain I have seen the arrival of this wholeness, and the blessings that it brings again and again. It helps to stop seeing death as a punishment, and see it as it really is – the event to which our whole lives are directed, and potentially the greatest blessing we receive. Finally there is mystery. If I as a Pastor believe that God is Omnipotent (all powerful), Omniscient (all seeing) and Omni-

Opinions, Everyone Has One

am no exception to this role and unfortunately dear readers I inflick them on you from time to time. Once again the headlines are screaming for my take on the current events. Today is Saturday May 10th and many of the things that are happening in the world have me quite at bay. The top one of course is the fact that Hillary Clinton is all but finished as the possible Democratic nominee for the next President of the Untied States. Barack Obama looks like he has it all sewn up and this distresses me, and why? I am sincerely afraid that he may not be able to carry himself to the White House. The fact remains that among white men, especially in the south, but not just there, he remains trapped in the ugly struggle of racism. Though we do not like to admit in this day and age, of what we like to think of as an enlightened society that such a thing does not exist, the hard fact is that it most certainly does. Sure he has gotten out a lot of new voters and registered them, but basically he is not holding onto the older voters and these I am afraid are the ones you can count on to actually show up on Election Day. Hillary on the other hand does appeal to these folks who make up a good part of hard line democratic voters, as she has proven in the larger states, but she continues to lose in states that have a large black population, reverse racism? The question remains in my mind, anyway, which of these various groups would actually change their minds in the privacy of the voting booth and God forbid vote for a Republican. Can you even fathom the state we would find our wonderful country in with four or more years of the status quo of George Bush’s policies, and no matter how much he may deny it on some issues, we know McCain is all about the polices in effect now. I know that no matter what happens in West Virginia and Kentucky on Tuesday, May 13th and 20th, both states the are highly favorable for a Clinton win, the fact will remain that Obama will have an insurmountable lead. Frankly I do not see anyway that the so called super delegates to the convention will not go with him. Is there any hope remaining of a Super Barack/Clinton ticket remaining? Well as they say stranger things have happened in politics – after all politics does make strange bed-fellows. Somehow I wish this would happen, but at this point I truly believe that it is just wishful thinking on my part. Think what a great historical happening this would be, but rationally could Hillary or would she maybe the better way of putting it be happy with finishing second? For the sake of the Democratic Party? For the sake of our country? For goodness sake anything to get rid of our failed international policies. What a fantastic night it was last Saturday evening at the Marigny Theatre, when the Saints and Sinners festival presented two great performance artist in two different shows. First up was A Day Without Sunshine starring Elizabeth Whitney and directed by Mark Finley at 6pm. Let me just say upfront that Ms. Whitney is an incredibly professional performer of extraordinary versatility. The show itself was a nonstop hour of remembrances from Whitney’s growing up in Tallahassee, Florida during Anita Bryant’s infamous Save Our Children campaign. Featuring original music (I thought I was going to laugh myself to death during her Five Fundamentals of Fundamentalism, I was laughing so hard I about fell out of my seat) with the main focus on beauty pageant queen, singer, and orange juice spokesperson turned anti-gay activist Bryant. New Orleanians of a certain age will of course remember Bryant’s visit to our city well. I can remember protesting her visit with us at a rally. Speaking with the artist I found out that she has performed here at several Dramarama events in the past, and just let me say when she comes our way again you owe it to yourself to catch her. She manages to bring humor into an otherwise bleak period of gay history. Brava, my friend, Brava. The second show was by international touring star and author Tim Miller, an artist who I have been dying to see on stage for quite some time and I was not disappointed. His new show entitled Us was well done and outrageous as well. Though scheduled to begin at 8pm, it started a little later due to the fact that the Saints and Sinners folk were having a bit of trouble with transportation to the theatre and through no fault of the performers. Well all I can say was that the wait was well worth it, the hype surrounding this young man was in no way exaggerated. From the energetic overture to the very last word on his take on life, through the Broadway shows that led the way through the maze of understanding as a ten year old, the show had the audience [continued on Main-27]

That is not to say that the performance did not have its serious moments touching on the anti-gay laws that forbid two members of the same sex from sharing the benefits of marriage, with the exception of Massachusetts. The don’t ask, don’t tell failed policy of our military and many other topical subjects. But most are done with a tongue in cheek attitude that serves Tim Miller very well. To quote Tony Kusher, author of Angels in America, “Tim Miller sings that song of the self which interrogates, with explosive, exploding, subversive joy and freedom, the constitution and borderlines of selfhood. You think you do not to hear such singing? You do! You must! Hopefully Tim will be back again real soon.

direction, at Actor’s Theatre of New Orleans the strengths seemed to be the more absurd pieces. Thus Julie Bounds was great as a woman who wants to live in a McDonald’s. She made seem totally natural a miracle involving a man who has cerebral palsy, or as she says, “cerebral walrus.” And she tossed off such gems as “God gave us plastic so we’d know what the everlasting is” with aplomb. In Twirler, Eva Langston brilliantly captured the assuredness of an evangelical baton twirler with a naturalness that precluded the piece from becoming merely broad shtik. And Audition may not be the greatest monolog—the desperation of an auditioning actress has been done before—but Rikki Gee batted it home with comic brio.

Still, there was a good deal to enjoy in Troy Poplous’ production. Crosby endowed Lena Younger with a little more mischievousness than she’s often portrayed with. Though her diction was sometimes mushy, she probed her songs with a depth of feeling and hard won knowledge. Ombrey DeGrate has a great voice and is a good actor. As Walter Lee, when given material worthy of him, he proved himself capable of gut-wrenching expression. The same could be said for Playmakers’ production of it in Covington with the exception of Nikki Caruso (very good as the ingenue) and Sandy Woodman (fun in an eccentric way as the lady of the manor). Under Kay Files generally good direction, this was community theater at its best or worst depending on how you looked at it. I personally enjoyed my trip out to the country very much.

Joseph Time

ne of the best parties to hit Baton Rouge in recent years took place last week at our sexy lawyer’s home. I speak of none other than Joseph Possa, who falls into that near-perfect category for outrageously beautiful human beings. I’ve known him for a long time, and I could never tire of his company or that beautiful body. Now here is one sexy guy who could be a model on any runway, but just being an outstanding example of human dignity in the community seems to fit him well. I rather like this guy, and I think most other people who know him feel the same way. Let me tell you a little about the big party. It was a celebration of finally having his historic home completely renovated, and he wanted everyone to see the changes and improvements on this prime piece of property overlooking City Park Lake on East Lakeshore. The theme was the 134th Run for the Roses. The residence was decorated with countless numbers of roses from Baton Rouge’s newest floral entrepreneur, Casey. The artwork on display was commissioned especially for the party, and this was a wonderful way to recognize the two artists. Catering was by Chef Don Bergeron and included some of his signature dishes such as lobster thermidor puffs and prime rib. A live band played throughout the party and included two live performances by Effie Marie, who sang the national anthem at the beginning of the official race. DJ Jennifer took over the music when the band finished for the evening. There were over 200 guests including special friends from Los Angeles, Dallas, and the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area. The ladies wore hats from the simplest to the most outrageous, a signature trademark of the Kentucky Derby. Men wore linen and seersucker suits, and everyone stuck to the theme. Joe’s niece, Stephanie (who is celebrating her latest 21st birthday as I write this up), and friend, Dickie, assisted in hosting this event, and the very beautiful Stephanie was adorned with the most fabulous hat of the evening. Looking over the audience, you might really think you were awaiting the actual race to start. Even though it was in the present time period, one could still feel the aura of this historical race. Joseph has always come up with some spectacular parties, but I do believe this was his best to date. Most of the honored guests were close friends and other professionals, and that list is composed of some of the top business leaders in the city. Whether it is a special event such as this one or just the annual Christmas party sponsored by the Tyler/Possa Law Firm, the elegance of the occasion was superior in all respects. It was a party to remember and to cherish. It was Joseph at his best. This guy has a unique type of class that puts him head and shoulders above so many others, and this was his time to shine. Believe me, he was the star of the occasion – or any occasion for

that matter. I simply adore my Possa boy.

Colla Time

t isn’t every day that I open my front door and see someone from my past standing there. When it comes to this gorgeous stud, I immediately yanked him inside so I could greet him properly away from the prying eyes of neighbors across the way. After all, I never know when the English stud is watching, and he didn’t need to see my welcoming moves for one of my favorite friends of all time. Colla is the name. Being the sexiest and most outrageously beautiful human being on the face of the earth is his game. It was two of the best hours I’ve spent in quite some time. Don’t ask me what transpired. I don’t kiss and tell. Most of you recall Colla before he moved back to Kentwood to restore the family home which he more or less inherited. With his brother’s help and some friends pitching in, he has come up with a restored jewel. The only disadvantage is that he has to cope with all those bodyguards, limos, helicopters, and tons of paparazzi that come into the area to cover that family of juvenile and adult delinquents who reside in or have lived in Kentwood. Maybe I shouldn’t include the brother in that description because so far his nose has been kept on the clean side. Now wouldn’t it be a hoot if he turned out to be family. Oh, well, I guess that is just wishful thinking. At any rate, Colla is working and enjoying his life now. He is the one I’ve told you before who loves to ride his horse nude in the back forty. Those descriptions of skin on skin are perhaps the most erotic I’ve ever heard, and the mental picture just sends me into orbit. With all the hard work he has been doing lately, there has been little time left for riding horses. I won’t comment on other living things that he rides, but I’m sure that would be one erotic story right after another. I can vouch for what a mutual friend told me recently when Colla came for a sleepover. When this friend walked into the computer room, there was a naked Colla with a monstrous weenie just twitch-

inal exams are over which means the Summer Break has officially begun. And downtown Lafayette is wilder than ever. If you’ve spent the last month buried in books and overwhelmed with studying, it’s high time you reward yourself, and the Sound Factory and Back Side are the perfect place to wind down after a busy semester. Lafayette’s premiere hot spots for the gay community, Sound Factory and Back Side, are redefining the nightlife here in Acadiana. They are open seven days a week to make sure no matter what night you decide to take a break from your busy life, they’ll not only be open, but have something festive going on. And with their new Summer Lineup, the nights are just that much wilder. Mondays are a celebration of Monday Madness with Happy Hour drink specials all night long. And for those of you who have become accustomed to the weekly Pool Tournament at Back Side, don’t worry about a thing. Your favorite competition hasn’t changed. Tuesdays are Karaoke Night at Sound Factory, hosted by the ever popular Chad Evans. Chad has as much personality as he does talent. His charisma really breathes new life into the karaoke experience. And he doesn’t limit the kinds of music he offers. He has everything from oldies and country to dance and rap. So if you haven’t been out lately on a Tuesday night or you think Karaoke Night is just the same old thing, you definitely need to come by. Wednesdays are now Wild Wednesdays at Sound Factory, with a special themed party every other week. So far, this has been even more spectacular than anticipated. The first Wild Wednesday was a Luau Party on May 7, and it was a real celebration of the summer spirit. There were people wearing everything from swimsuits to straw skirts, not to mention,

everybody who walked in the door was given a complimentary lei. Now that’s what I call spreading good cheer. And the party will continue tomorrow night, May 21, with the Military Party. So get out your camo and come by and show your spirit. And in two weeks, on June 4, Sound Factory and Back Side are hosting a very special Summer edition of Wild Wednesday. And while the theme is still being kept a closely guarded secret, I can at least tell you it will involve sexy swimsuits and a lot of newly tan bodies. So get ready for a wild night. And thanks to Sound Factory and Back Side, Wednesdays this summer will be wilder than ever. Thursdays are Thirsty Thursdays, and while I’m not going to print the specifics, I can assure you it involves drink specials that will top any others in town. Come by and I promise you’ll be pleasantly surprised, along with your wallet. Friday nights are Long Fridays with specials all night on your favorite longneck beer. Saturdays are now Sizzling Saturdays at Sound Factory, with drink specials on all your favorite liquor, not just the well drinks, but all your favorite call and premium brands as well. And to end the week, Sundays begin with Sunday Tea at Back Side and continues with Show Night at Sound Factory. What a way to end the week. And it all begins again the next day. With this new weekly lineup, Sound Factory and Back Side are showing Lafayette that there really can be a celebration every night of the week, and they are single-handedly providing it. Now that school’s out, there’ll be more people than ever out and about in downtown, as well as more drunk drivers. Be responsible. This boy is absolutely perfect – from head to toe and definitely at that strategic point in between. Goodness! I find it difficult to keep my fingers on the right keys as I type this up. One of these days, I’m going to Kentwood and spend a weekend with my Colla boy. He is just one of those wonderful human beings that you just have to love. He’s not perfect, but he comes close. I wouldn’t trade him for any of those club types that piss away their lives trying to be something they definitely aren’t. Colla is down to earth and easy to love. By the way, sweetie, I hear there are lots of happy people moving into your area? What are you people putting in your water over there?

nice and sexy Little John. It was a celebration of birthdays, committed relationships, and, of course, a mother or two since it was held on the Saturday before Mother’s Day. In addition, nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters, and welcomed guests all shared the joy of the day. The only strange thing that I recall, and this happens occasionally, was the addition of several women that neither host knew. It’s called party crashing, and it was like walkin city, enjoy the food, and then leave. I can’t understand going to a party without an invitation, but apparently there are some who do this – and get away with it. I consider it damn rude. Other than this strange happening, I saw a very nice gathering of very happy people – celebrating relationships that really stand out. One couple being honored has been together 13 years. That would be Billy and Ronnie. Of course, Phil and John have been at it for a year or so. It just goes to show how fast time passes

I can recall that party on Eighth Street when Billy and Ronnie were so horny, they locked themselves in their house and didn’t even bother to attend their own party. Oh, well, we had fun without you two sweethearts anyway. A very happy event took place when one mother arrived, and her son (who she didn’t know would be there because he lives in Dallas) hid in one of the bedrooms awaiting the big surprise. It was a wonderful scream that came from that room when she walked in with lots of tears to follow. It was a joy to witness this. This was another elaborately decorated occasion. The back yard was filled with a portable pool and one of those enclosed jumping contraptions. I’m not sure what you call it, but the kids had lots of fun. The food was really nice too. It included everything from jambalaya and crawfish pies to barbecue ribs, sandwiches, and several chip and dip bowls. I don’t think anyone went away hungry, especially those uninvited women. Phil’s home is in a secluded area away from the heavily traveled streets of the city. In fact, you really have to know the location in order to even happen upon it. Phil has done an excellent job in his choice of furniture and in the elegantly decorated patio. The fountain was small and simple in design but added to the unique charm of this garden filled with beautiful flowers and the decorations hanging along the fence. It showed a kind of class that this guy has but keeps hidden behind a wonderful and remarkable fabric of humanity. Phil and John have a lot of great

friends, and they all came together for this event. It was family time, and this was a way to share with everyone the beauty of a wonderful holiday. You could tell that love was all around. That is the beauty of wonderful relationships.

Walter Time

nother visitor made a return trip to Red Stick last week. My friend Walter, now living in Fort Walton Beach, came by to chat for a while. I met Walter years ago when Hibiscus Bookstore was around, and we’ve been friends ever since. His health forced him into early retirement, and he now lives with relatives in Florida. He only makes it back to our area occasionally, but I’m always glad to know that he remembers to give me a call and drops by. Walter has been generous with gifts over our long relationship. Those bookends represent some of the most beautiful geodes, different colors, and all adorning my bookshelves with their shiny crystals of ancient wonder. I always came to expect these, and I could never get enough of them since I have such a huge book collection. He also used to bring me plants for my garden. Each and every one of them had erotic names or indicated something sexual like the yellow rose called Golden Showers. These plants range from roses to lilies, and they still stand out in my garden, but I think my all-time favorite would be the two blood lilies. From a beauty standpoint, they are difficult to match unless you count the bright red Epiphyllum basket adorning the arch in my tropical garden.

Yes, Walter is one of a kind. He has a wonderful laugh, and he shares good times with me on these rare visits. We recall the good times and the bad times, and somehow everything always seem to look good even though there were some rough times in the past. We manage to look ahead and welcome more times when we can be together. It is nice when you are in the company of a good friend.

All Other Times

ur theater season ended here last week, but I already have my season tickets for next year. Not knowing when the Saenger will re-open, or even if it ever will, I have found that the local theater is a fine way to enjoy what I miss so much about New Orleans. I suppose I miss living in the French Quarter too, but that part of my life was prior to Red Stick, so now I settle for visits with friends and enjoying top quality restaurants in and around the city. I still enjoy stopping in at Good Friends, the Phoenix, Lafitte’s, and Cowpokes, but this is not the same as it used to be. I think dining at one of the local restaurants, namely Café Amelie on Royal Street, or shopping at Rab-Dab on Royal, and dropping in for a quick visit with friends is more enjoyable than wandering from bar to bar with no plan in mind except to see what is happening. I do that too, just not as often. A dinner is being planned now with Gerry and Luther, so I’ll tell you about that soon. It is nice to relax with friends you enjoy and just pass the time with good conversation and good food. A bottle of Sequoia Grove helps - maybe two – sometimes – and is always nice. However, I

think Gerry will agree that just looking at the gorgeous Luther is enough to keep us standing at attention throughout the entire meal. Luther is just another of my favorite human beings of all time. I would be remiss in my duties if I didn’t keep you updated on the Robert and Brandon saga. The back yard is no longer a back yard. It’s a swimming pool, not completed yet, but the concrete is drying, the house painting is almost completed, and the guys are about ready for a wellearned vacation. I think that calls for a trip to Atlanta. I guess I’ll keep an eye out for Mr. Jack and Miss Lucy while they are gone. I can’t get over the way things have come together over there. Those guys have worked their buns off, and the improvements are just outstanding. It’s the best thing to happen in Spanish Town in many, many years. I ran into Joy last week, and since she didn’t say anything about that column I wrote about her party, I assumed she hadn’t read it. After Johnny mentioned it, she was collecting all the back issues of Ambush that were still at Hound Dogs to catch up on the latest. I’m awaiting your apology, sweetheart. I also have to tell you about the annual Rocky and Chansley Crawfish party but I’m afraid I’m out of space. However, this is one event that is super nice, and I’ll get to it in my next column. Things are moving right along here in Red Stick. We have a new Miss Trailer Trash, chosen over Splash way, and those bar dancers over at George’s have really been nice and well equipped. It has the very handsome Thomas Roberts, former CNN news anchor, on the cover, and the story about him and other happy people in the news industry is extremely interesting. There is also an article on our favorite lesbian author Patricia Cornwell, and the one about Patrick Dempsey and his gay following also hits the right tone. It’s the Pride 2008 edition, Issue 1009. It’s the best one since their tribute issue to Heath Ledger. I hope you all have a nice time at Southern Decadence. Just remember one thing. Have a great time – but be sure to wrap that rascal.
