Someone Bought the House on the Island Closing Weekend May 9-11

he Marigny Theatre takes pride in presenting the winner of this years playwright competition co-sponsored by the Saints and Sinners writers conference. The winning play, Someone Bought the House on the Island by Ken Anderson, closes at the Marigny Theatre, 1030 Marigny Street with performances on Friday, May 9 at 8pm and Sunday, May 11 at 6pm. Admission is $25 per person with $20 tickets for seniors and students with ID. The play explores a young gay man’s quest for love, and identity in the chaotic sixties and seventies, and the nature of reality during a generation obsessed with drugs. The play stars Kevin Ford, Trenton Ryan Perez, Steve Kubick, Dennis Monn, Warren Usey and Eric Martin Webb, under the direction of Timm Holt.

Tony Award Winner Michael Cerveris at the Hi Ho Lounge May 10

ichael Cerveris along with musical guests will be appearing at the Hi Ho Lounge, 2239 St. Claude Avenue, in New Orleans on Saturday, May 10 at 9pm. Raised in West Virginia and arriving in New Orleans via New York City, Cerveris has had a varied and acclaimed career as a musician, singer, songwriter and actor. Alternating between tours as guitarist and vocalist for Bob Mould, he has sung with artists as diverse as Pete Townshend and The Breeders, and has opened with his own band for Frank Black, Teenage Fanclub and Lloyd Cole. Cerveris is also a Tony Award-winning actor (Assassins) who has received consistent rave reviews for such shows as Sweeney Todd (with Patti Lupone),

Washington, DC to host Largest LGBT Aquatics Competition June 19-22

he District of Columbia Aquatics Club (DCAC) and the Washington Wetskins Water Polo Team are extending an invitation to the LGBT community to support the upcoming 2008 International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics Championships (IGLA) by either competing in or attending the annual tournament. More than 1,200 athletes are expected to convene in Washington, DC during the fourday competition to be held June 19– 22. The IGLA Championships provide competition in the sports of swimming, diving, water polo, and synchronized swimming. Over the years, IGLA competitors have set dozens of United States and World Masters swimming records. Former Olympians Bruce Hayes, Bruce Pichler and Dan Veatch, as well as Jack Mackenroth of the hit Bravo television show Project Runway have all participated. “DCAC and the Wetskins are really excited to host IGLA. We’ve been working hard over the past year to ensure that the IGLA Championships in DC will be a worldclass event,” said WonKee Moon, IGLA Director. “Additionally, I think that first-time visitors to DC, as well as those that have not visited the city in a few years will be pleasantly surprised by what DC has to offer beyond the monuments. DC is truly an international city with great restaurants, culture, and nightlife.” Competition will take place at the world-renowned natatorium in the Eppley Recreation Center on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park, and at the Takoma Community Center’s stateof-the-art, Olympic-size swimming pool in Washington, DC. In addition to the competition, the IGLA Championships are also known for their irreverent celebrations. Essential to every IGLA Championships are the closing night awards banquet, social events, and the famed “Pink Flamingo,” where teams perform skits involving dressing up drag, choreographed dance moves and synchronized swimming. A panel of “celebrity” judges rates each team’s performance and the winner is awarded the Pink Flamingo Trophy at the end of the competition. This year’s theme is “In Hot Water.”

Kindness of Friends

uring my years of very active political activism, I met several older, professional lesbians that spoke so ill of gay men that it seems odd to me that they could not experience the great friendships I have found with men. I have never been able to depend on these women for any type of kindness. And as I write this sentence, Ray Bates has just brought me a hot cup of delicious coffee to stimulate my creativity. Yes, I am three days home from Ochsner where two rods and several screws were placed in my back to correct the Scoliosis that has developed in the last few years. Other than Julie Thompson a great friend whom I can always depend on, there were no other women (lesbian or straight) coming to my aid this time around. The joy comes from guys like Al Hardouin who showed up to feed me lunch because he figured out for himself that I probably couldn’t sit up to eat. Of course, I can always count on Fr. Michael (Michael Des Jardins) for hand holding, prayer and a good joke to make me smile. He has never failed me in times of trouble. My stay would have been far worse without the daily phone calls from Stewart Butler

and Randy Trahan. Even a friend from the ice age, Ed Wilson, took time to call with a friendly word as did Joe Ruffino. But of all the thoughtful gestures, Ray Bates is the king of kindness, the king of kool. He is the kid sister that I never had – until now. Ray showed up at church the morning before my surgery ready to move out to Metairie for a week to take care of Freddie. When I realized how difficult life would be alone after back surgery, I asked him to stay an extra few days. He said, “Of course, gurl, anything you need.” When I asked him to stay longer to assist my aunt because I could not drive yet, he just smiled and said, “Anything you need.” Now I am trying to think of another crisis to keep him with me longer because he has me totally spoiled and that is the way only children like myself should be. He cooks, cleans, drivers me to appointments, runs errands, listens to my woes, applies medicine to my incisions and keeps me laughing all day and evening. Yes, laughing and telling naughty stories is the order of the day even while we are [continued on Main-12]

sappho psalm ...from Main-10 watching DVD after DVD. He is the best girlfriend I thought I had but know now that I have never really had and he will make a great wife to some lucky man. Ray is almost as wonderful as the best friend I had for years Douglas Roemershauser. Douglas was also a

loving and gentle soul. I am thankful for knowing both these men and being allowed to share their lives. I used to wonder about how I would give back to Douglas for all he did for me. Now I am wondering the same about Ray. Douglas died of AIDS in 1990. I spoke at his memorial service at the request of his mother and his partner. Our deep love for one another was evident to all who knew us. I pray that I can be the same good friend to Ray that I was to Douglas. Ray told me while we were watching CNN election coverage that

if Obama was nominated, he didn’t think he could vote for him. I’ve heard that from several people and was just about at the same mindset until I listened to Obama’s April 29th press interview. For the first time, I thought of Obama as a man of strong character. I liked that. We need that. Let’s face it – if the fantastic Hillary does not win the candidacy at the Democratic National Convention, we cannot just sit back and not vote. A no vote is a vote for the Republican candidate. The Nation cannot afford another four years of war, lack of health care and some children being left behind. We cannot afford another four years of arrogance and the destruction of foreign policy. We cannot afford to be hated around the world while we are feeding and supporting the world. We need to earn back respect and I do believe that either Hillary or Obama can accomplish that goal. I have not given up hope that Hillary Clinton will be our candidate or that Obama would accept running as her VP. It could be the other way around too. But I will and we should support our party. Hillary has spoken up stronger and longer for GLBT rights but it is the party’s position that will be served by either candidate. Without Congress behind them, a President can do very little alone. The Democrat Party is the party of the GLBT community. It is our example to younger GLBT Americans that will make a positive difference in their future. PFLAG is one example of strong support for the youth of America. In New Orleans, PFLAG is getting ready to support the GLBT youth literally. The Scholarship Reception is once again scheduled for Mother’s Day, May 11th. This year the joyful sharing of resources will be held at Dillard University. The time is 4pm. There will be food and champagne and a lot to celebrate. There will also be the Gay Men’s Chorus to entertain. The Chorus is always a must see and hear. More than 20 scholarships are being awarded this year. The support of the general GLBT community is needed. The community is invited to join with PFLAG members and scholarship winners for this always joyful event. I will look forward to seeing you there as it is through the kindness of our friends that we are able to assist these students.

As far as the festival goes, we are starting to receive vendor applications and entertainment commitments. Vendors thus far include French Quarter Candles and Minou Minou both of whom attended last year. On the live entertainment stage we expect to see the Revelers, Lisa Lynn, Rebirth Brass Band, Big Chief Alfred Doucette, Sister Funk, and Grace Fraga and on the drag stage we’ll see performances by the Jaded Jade Revue, the Starlight Girls, Lady Magic

Necha Benoit, Rikki Redd, the Carnival Kings, former and current Mr. and Miss Gay Pride title holders including Savanna DeLorean, Monica Storm, Passion Armani Cassidine, Keno Kane Broadway and many many more, I’m sure. Vendor applications as well as entertainment contracts are available at our website, www.nolapridefest.org. Grace Fraga did her stand up comedy routine at Cowpokes on the 25th of April, however attendance was minimal. Grace intends to return again in May and we hope that more folks will be available to attend the show. It is through shows and venues

such as this that we raise money to put on the festival. In addition to raising money for the festival we use some surplus monies to give back to the community. Last year we donated $2,000 to the PFLAG Scholarship Fund. The scholarship champagne reception will be held at Dillard University’s Cook Auditorium on Sunday, May 11 at 4pm at which time we will present the first ever New Orleans Alliance of Pride Scholarship. Tickets for the reception are available through PFLAG at www.pflagno.org and are $25. in advance and $30. at the door. The Mr. and Miss Gay Pride Pageant is still scheduled for Wednesday, June 18 at Oz. One contestant has signed up so far and a reminder to anyone wishing to compete; the pageant is limited to the first five paid applications per title. You can request an application by e-mail at pridefestneworleans@yahoo.com. The pageant will consist of three categories, presentation, talent, and formal wear Q & A. The registration fee is $30 and the door

charge will be $10. Tables of four are available in advance for $100. and may also be obtained by e-mailing the above address. Steve Patrick has cast his original French Quarter fantasy, Smoke, which will run at the Marigny Theatre opening May 30 and running through June 15. General admission seats will be $10 and front row seats are $15. The cast in order of appearance is Mary Pauley (Eudora), Carlos Gonzales (Leo, Rory, Dade), Louis St. Romaine (Maurice, Jason, Warren), and Warren Usey (Henri, Kirby). I know we’ve said all year that our parade would be on Sunday at the close of the festival, however in working with city officials the Parade Committee has moved it to the evening of Saturday, June 28 rather than Sunday, June 29. Floats are available for $1,200 each which covers the float rental, tractor, driver and insurance. Floats may be obtained by contacting us through the website. Have a great day. Louisiana Seafood

ast issue, I included a recipe for boiled shrimp, one that you would get if you were to eat these wonderful delicate seafood along the East coast, or just about anywhere outside of Louisiana. Well you would have thought I had committed a mortal sin, or at the very least invented a new one, for all of you who took the time to castigate me I am once again including a recipe for our own beloved seafood boil, and while I’m at it I’ve included some other seafood recipes that are some of our local faves.

LOUISIANA SEAFOOD BOIL 12 quarts water 4 large onions, coarsely chopped 4 celery stalks, cut into 2 inch pieces 10 lemons, halved 5 bulbs garlic, tops cut off just enough to expose flesh 2 cups kosher salt ½ cup Zatarain’s dry-spice crab boil seasoning 10 bay leaves

1/3 cup black peppercorns 1 teaspoon cayenne 2 pounds andouille sausage, cut in 2-inch pieces 1 dozen live jumbo crabs 5 pounds large head-on shrimp Place all ingredients except crabs and shrimp in a five-gallon or larger boiling pot. Bring to boil over high heat. Reduce heat and simmer for ten minutes. Add crabs one at a time. Let liquid return to a simmer and cook another five minutes. Add shrimp and let the liquid return to a simmer a second time. When it does, turn off the heat and let the seafood steep, uncovered for ten more minutes. Promptly remove sausage and seafood from the pot with a strainer, allow cooling a few minutes and serving at once.

cookin' with auntie dee ...from Main-20 1 ½ teaspoons Creole seasoning 8 tablespoons clarified butter 2 tablespoons vegetable oil lemon juice Chopped fresh parsley Soak cleaned crabs in buttermilk for at least thirty minutes. Combine flour and Creole seasoning in a small bowl. Remove the crabs from buttermilk, dredge them in the flour mixture and shake to remove excess. Heat the butter and oil in a large skillet. Cook the crabs two to three minute on each side, until they are lightly brown and cooked through. Serve them on toasted slices of French bread, sprinkled with lemon juice and chopped parsley.

2 medium eggplants, peeled and cubed ½ cup butter 1 large onion diced (1 cup) 4 ribs celery diced (1 cup) 2 medium bell pepper, diced ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley ¼ cup chopped garlic 1¼ cups diced cooked ham 1½ cups small shrimp, peeled and deveined ¾ tablespoon Italian seasoning 1 tablespoon blackening seasoning 1½ cups chicken broth 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon hot sauce ½ cup finely chopped green onions 1 cup Italian-style bread crumbs ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese In a large pot, cover the eggplant with water, boil over medium-high heat for about twenty minutes or until fork tender. Drain well. Transfer to a large mixing bowl and mash well. Set aside. Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees. In a large skillet melt the butter. Add the onion, celery, green pepper, parsley, and garlic. Sauté until vegetables become opaque, about 10 minutes. Stir into the eggplant. Stir in all remaining ingredients, combining well. Transfer to a casserole dish. Bake for about twenty-five minutes or until the casserole is lightly browned on top. Serve with a cool salad and hot French bread.

CRAWFISH CAKES ½ cup butter ¾ cup chopped onion ¾ cup chopped celery ¾ cup chopped bell pepper 2 cloves garlic minced 3 tablespoons hot sauce 3 tablespoons Creole mustard 1 tablespoon salt 1½ teaspoons ground black pepper 1½ teaspoons Tabasco sauce 1½ teaspoons lemon juice ½ pound finely chopped crawfish tail meat ½ pound whole crawfish tail meat 3 tablespoons butter ½ loaf stale French bread 1½ cups Italian-style bread crumbs 1 cup flour Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onions, celery, bell pepper, and garlic. Sauté over medium heat for about ten minutes or until onions are opaque. Add the remaining ingredients except for the last four and stir to combine. Remove from heat and set aside. Soak the French bread in water for a minute or two, squeeze out excess water. Stir the bread into the crawfish mixture. Cook over medium heat five to seven minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. Stir in the breadcrumbs. Allow to cool completely. Roll the mixture into ½ cup balls and gently press them down forming into three inch cakes. Dust with flour. Saute in remaining butter over medium heat until golden brown. am going to tell you a really dreadful story…..A young man from Louisiana goes off to college in a distant city, and his parents don’t hear much from him for about six months – they are starting to get really concerned when a letter arrives in the mailbox in Metairie. It says….. Dear Mom and Dad, Sorry I haven’t written but things have been a little busy here – what with the accident and everything. Just after arriving at college I fell out of a frat house window and broke my leg – so the first month was a little frantic. I was lucky though, because the girl next door – Svetlana was happy to help out, and it just happens that she is a physiotherapist, well – a masseuse actually. She and I got along real well, and I have some good news for you! We are married! Life is difficult, what with little Ivan on the way and her immigration difficulties to iron out, but I hope you will come and join us soon and meet her. I am much better, but did get a urinary tract infection shortly after meeting Svetlana that had me quite ill – but Svetlana says these things are easy to catch from bathrooms and even being sneezed at. All the above is a lie – I am well, and never fell or met anyone called Svetlana, but I wanted you to remember the important things in life when I tell you that I am failing Physics and Math. Perspective reminds us to draw on our blessings to eclipse fear and sorrow, and even errant children marrying hookers. This is a pretty simple trick and yet happiness still seems unobtainable for millions. The kingdom of Bhutan measures the happiness of its people, and uses the resulting ‘happiness index’ to drive government policy – they see it as more important than Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or competitiveness, and in human terms it is! One thing that seems clear is that happiness does not come through owning ever increasing amounts of ‘stuff’, it does not come through status or good looks or any other passing thing – unless we find a source of happiness that is invincible, that cannot be destroyed by disappointment or loss then we are always going to lurch from high to low, as we gradually discover that the latest ‘toy’ or external amusement is not what we thought it was going to be. Then of course there are all the bogeymen of human life – disease, death, bankruptcy, hurricanes, heartache – our source of happiness has to be

strong enough to weather all these gales. The GLBT community is presented with all the usual sources of commercial happiness from booze to Buicks and everything in between. Sometimes we are a little more susceptible to them because we are often uniquely injured by society and the traumas of growing up GLBT. When you add to the mix such sources of temporary highs as porn, pills and party drugs then by rights we should all be deliriously happy 24 hours a day - unless of course none of these things work. Unless of course that they are merely painkillers or snares to part us with our money, and the real source of happiness (here comes the Pastor bit) - a relationship with God where we understand how desperately, passionately, emphatically we are loved – costs nothing at all. Only the eternal and unchanging can offer eternal and unchanging happiness. Only God can offer, in fact insist, that we deserve ecstasy – the sort of overwhelming joy that nothing else can offer us. If we think happiness means a paid-off mortgage and a nice car then we are unlikely to seek more; we have to open our minds to the true grandeur of happiness, BIG happiness, eternal happiness - and quit settling for a cheap thrill or lining the pockets of big business. If we can claim the real thing – then we can have the little joys to our heart’s content, but without the real thing, the little diversions are never going to cut it! Rev. loud Nine, Caryl Churchill’s popular surreal comedy of sexual confusion, cross dressing, and political racism and repression was splendidly staged by the Tulane University Dept. of Theatre & Dance. Directed with a clear vision and his own crafty and credible cache of theatrical professionalism and artistic expertise, Carl Walker once again illuminated a stage with memorable and beautiful work. Mr. Walker not only gave us a fresh frisky frothy farce but many moments of thoughtful beauty, all of which he told me was the result of working with such a talented cast of students. And I agree. Of course his talent as a director had much to do with this successful and entertaining event. The play occurs in two acts, the first act in Africa 1879; the second in London 1979. The cast was without fault and the English accents were impeccable. The performance took place in the black box lab theater with a minimilist regard to sets, except for a screen of louvered shutters as a functional background across the rear of the stage. However the lovely period costumes credited to 23 students were excellent. David Raphel supervised the non-intrusive but workable set and prop concept. Other tech work was supervised by Brad Marnidi and very well conceived. Miles Babin played both Clive and Edward, two Englishmen who are blinded by their nationalism and whose mind set is so wrapped up in the British flag that they also have myopic visions of ugly realities. Andrew Farrier did a fine job playing both Harry Bagley and Martin and Claire Gresham was wonderful as Maud and Lin. Helen Jaksch was outstanding as Ellen, Mrs. Saunders and Betty. Sean Knapp was a delicate and effective delight as Betty and with a strong switch from estrogen to testosterone, an forceful Gerry. Zach Serota did the role of both Joshua, Cathy, and the Soldier with high energy and a vigorous interpretation of his roles and Jenny Smith was charming and vivid as Victoria and sufficiently butch as Edward. It was just another evening of very fine theater at the venerable campus of T.U. which one has come to expect and appreciate.

nnie, this old musical by Meehan, Strouse and Charnin, is a perfect example of how to write a Broadway show

that will probably sell tickets and go on to glory and be crowned as a classic American Broadway Musical. Its got a gaggle of singing little girlies who are orphans stuck in a horrible home run by a mean old harridan of a drunk, it’s set during the depression of the 1930s, and it has a high-hopes billionaire with a heart of gold that manages to make the world happy again. Oh, and it also has a dog. But no nuns. That’s been done in another show. In spite of all the schmaltz, ultra sonic screaming of little orphan girls, and the superficial high blood sugar sentimentality, it’s a

excellent production, except that I’m an not fond of the high decibel ear bursting sounds of little girls and I eat dogs for Christmas rather than turkey and I always found the peculiar instant like/ love of Daddy Warbucks to be a somewhat shadowy suggestion of Nabukov’s great novel Lolita. Probably soon to be another Broadway musical. A But the major performers! Becky Allen gave a rather one note interpretation of mean old lady Miss Hannigan. But it’s a cartoon role and she can do anything anyway she likes. Miss Madison Kerth as Annie has charm, stage presence galore and a fine strong voice. Her chemistry with the inimitable and glorious in every way performer, Christopher Bentivegna as Daddy Warbucks was luminous, even with those dark over tones of little lovely Lolita’s ghost hanging around sometimes. Bob Edes, Jr. was divine in every thing he did espe-

tria, in a Catamite monastery converted to a school for perfect young ladies. I hear they plan to have three adorable large dogs, a gaggle of nubile little nymphet students, a large lesbian house mother who forces the little girls to make bathtub beer, several alcoholic nuns, and a role for a character named PUNJAB (a sociopath egomaniac). I bet it’s going to be ALMOST as good as Annie, it if ever comes to pass.

So, let me be among the many to say bravissima for bringing out all the best in a well done musical, filled with out best local performers, great costumes and sets (Gil Moralis), and very good lighting and sound. When you get a musical genius like Jonne Dendinger aka Dr. Joanne, in the pit, the orchestra is bound to sound like pure Broadway professionals. And it did. Lindsey Price did both “adorable” and exciting adult choreography, and the sound by Kyle Herbert was as beautiful to hear as the costumes coordinated by Judy Claverie were to see. So, I’ve got no qualms about this

trodding the boards ...from Main-26 can I add to these two critics comments, and from Manhattan Yet? Well, I can say they know what they are talking about so I wanted to share this with all of you. And I agree about the warmth and sensitivity of the actors, all of whom gave moving performances. Blake Balu, one of our most amazing local actors, once again did his role very well as King Midas with a certain dignity and sensitivity. Derrick Deal played Poseidon and others with a magnificent stage presence and a strong sense of purpose. He is gifted with a stunning physique, tall, golden skin, every muscle defined, and a beautiful voice, assets many actors would wish to have. Mr. Deal is a gifted young man indeed. Joyce Deal played Alcyone and others a quiet intensity and James Yeargain played Orpheus and others with delicate and yet incisive understanding. Mr. Yeargain also did a walk on part as Eros in the nude wearing only a pair of wings on his back. He has a handsome body and his simple on stage presence was done with grace and dignity. There was a large cast in this splendid show, too numerous to name, however bear in mind all of you that according to certain Yankee experts you were all excellent and worked as a true ensemble. That fantastic set, swimming pool and all was created by Kevin Griffith. Emotionally effective lighting by Lyn F. Caliva, with colorful costumes by Tony French, best of all, “better than New York City” direction by our own UNO Professor, the talented Mr. David W. Hoover. Our town’s Metamorphoses was lovely, moving, dignified and engrossing. What more could a patron ask for?

Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh, The Allan Sherman Musical

he good news is that Minacapelli’s Dinner Playhouse in Slidell, LA is NOT MOVING! Call up Ricky Luke and Chef Ginger for details (1.985.781.6565). Currently running is a mishugahna musical by that old Jewish comedian who put together a revue of songs with very clever lyrics that captures the spirit of the American Jewish mind-set and humor. Not that you have to be Jewish to understand all the jokes, but it would help. All in all this show is as lively, spicy, tasty and delicious as the all you can eat buffet cooked up by Award Winning Chef, Ginger Luke. It may not be all Kosher but it sure is good and festive. Like the show itself the characters are 6 lively actors who seem to know the Jewish shtick well, although the men don’t quite get that wonderful Brooklyn, New York, Barbara Streisand (Ya, know what I mean. Oy vey, so vat’s fah dinna ta nite? The ladies do it well. It’s all in the rhythm of the accent. “Hey, have I got a gurl fa you, young mensch. “Oy vey, if ya Faddah could heah ya now?” Anyway the show is a collection of scenes from American Jewish life where the cost of everything is usually a necessary mention. “And huh weddin ring, my deah! Ya shouddah seen it. 25 thousand and I don’t mean retail.” The stars of this mish mash of hilarity offers a glimpse into the very funny elements of both the life of a Jew in our great country as well a few glimpses into the sadder aspects, all in song and dance both of which are witty and bouncy as a night at your grandsons bar mitzvah. Jews, Italians, Irish, and African Americans are not so different in their humanity but can be very different in their humorous reactions to any and all of everyone’s life experiences. Bottom line: we all laugh, we all cry, we are all born, we all die. But it’s our unique humor relative to our cultural background that keeps us trying to do our best. This show is a delightful, hilarious, heartwarming expose of human nature via clever witty lyrics and song and dance whether one goes to Temple, Cathedral, or Mosque, or a Buddhists alter at home. Highly recommended if you need to smile, laugh and fill your belly with fine good.

For Better

nce again I was amazed and totally delighted at the high quality and posh production values of Southern Rep’s presentation of Eric Cobel’s fine play For Better. Cobel’s fertile imagination caught the influence of high tech “stuff” in our times and turned the concept into a highly amusing, charming and well written comedy. And I think this might be the first drama that shows how foolish, yet necessary, but overdone and used as a “look at me I’m so important” I have a blue light glowing on my ear and I’m always connected to someone somewhere, etc. statement of self worth and worthless ego. It’s as if no one ever has a moment of silence and must always be tuned in and turned on to prove their own worth and show off some much needed self confidence. How sad. Yet, Eric Coble has woven this nonsense into a humorous and charming evening of excellent theater. David Raphel’s set was exquisite in its seeming simplicity. Stark but with what looked like the diagram for the inside of a computer and/or the telephone company wired network looming from the shadows upstage. Marty Sachs lighting was lovely; Elizabeth Parent is still a master of beautiful costume design, and Michael Singleton did effective and difficulty sound design with elan. Gary Rucker’s direction was sublime. The actors were quite simply terrific and as professional as anything from NYC. George Sanchez as Wally Baedeker an older dad not quite up to understanding all this technology was as good as it gets. Ashley Ricord was a vibrant charmer as his daughter with every part of her body timed to go on and off per her cell phone settings, computer settings, etc., all the while just looking for Mr. Right. Aimee Hayes was just so good I wanted to run on stage and give her a long warm hug as she played Francine Dexter, wife of handsome highly talented Leon Contravesprie who did Michael Dexter. Sean Patterson, who is always right on whatever he’s on, I mean as a fine actor, was right on again playing the smaller role of Stuart Tramontane, and Veronica Russell stole every moment on stage, up high in her little loft space stage left, as the hippie-like worldly Lizzie Monohan. The plot obviously involved the concerned family of a daughter who had met Mr. Right in a coffee shop three or so weeks ago and had since been on cell phone, PC, and god knows what other electronic connection she would use (e-mails) to be in contact with him. They only met once and they are planning to marry. The family is horrified and think she’s doing it out of desperation. A series of e mail mishaps, mixed and open line connections, accidental unwanted conference calls, and other electronically confused situations that could only happy in these times establishes the plays dramatic conflicts and in the final resolution a

marriage trans world via cell phone ensues as all ends happily thanks to cyber space. It’s a very clever concept and probably people will marry by email, cell phone and e printer very soon. After all legal contracts are already acceptable via fax machines. The show was very chic, witty, perfectly performed and had the clean expensive look of a costly high quality production. Another winner by our town’s Southern Rep. Theater’s constant successes!. In this venue, which allowed for a pure, clear, directorial vision of guest Director Gary Rucker, we saw just how professional Mr. Rucker can be and is, when working with others of an equally high caliber of talent.

Under the guidance and tutorial talents of Dr. Valerie Ann Jones Francis, Artistic Musical Director and world famous Pianist, Dr. Wilfred Delphin, with our own famous Ms. Lula Elzy as Choreographer, we heard some vocal talents we never imagined were in the training program at this great university in our town. Celebrate Gay Pride In Greater Fort Lauderdale

oin locals and gay travelers at the 9th Annual Fort Lauderdale Stonewall Street Festival, a week-long Gay Pride celebration from June 16 to June 22 featuring lively events, grand performances and a vibrant new parade. Highlights of the Pride festival include the first annual night parade and street party in the popular ‘gayborhood’ of Wilton Manors, as well as the annual street festival and exhibition. The new night parade and street party are an exciting addition to the already spectacular Pride celebration. The events on Saturday, June 21 start off with a special t-dance at Rosie’s Bar & Grill at 3pm followed by DJ Joe Bermudez mixing up tunes on Wilton Drive at 7pm, as dusk approaches. The parade kicks off at 8pm with colorful floats, and the participation of local businesses and GLBT organizations. Singing sensation Tammy Wright will perform hit songs while revelers dance the night away. Greater Fort Lauderdale serves up a multitude of comfortable gay-owned establishments. Wilton Manors, located just north of downtown Fort Lauderdale and minutes from the beach, is a bustling hotspot for residents and visitors trodding the boards ...from Main-27 Rogers & Hammerstein, Scott Joplin, Menotti and Gershwin. What a splendid and varied selection. There were 25 vocalists in this program so I can’t list them all but some of my favorites were Fredrick Hudnall, Jr. and Kimberly Henry singing Mozart’s La ci darem, and Joel Barkers singing Mozart’s Voi che sapete. Most of the cast joining Enisha Santacruze as Treemonisha and Kirsten Charbonnet as Lucy in Joplin’s opera Tremonisha. and Brittney Atkinson as Fiordigligi, Neila Rene Bond as Dorabella, Dedrian Hogan as Guglielmo, Jermon Wilson as Ferrando, Kimberly Henry as Despina and Ashton Green as Don Alfonso singing with joy and gusto, Mozart’s difficult Alla bella Despinetta.. Have any of YOU ever tried to sing a sextet by Mozart? Wow, what a joy to hear. All of these singers were excellent. I was especially excited to hear the powerful tones and vocalizing of young Mezzo Soprano Danielle Edinburg Wilson. You have great potential. Please continue your studies. I hope to hear you at the Met in NYC one day. Thanks one and all for a great evening of wonderful young voices and I think I even heard one of two of the next Leontine Price voices among them, but you all know I can’t tell. All Around Town

his hasn’t been a particularly exciting period of time here in old Red Stick. Of course, locals have enjoyed programs at Splash, George’s, and Hound Dogs, but nothing really outstanding stands out. Maybe we just have fun here and take it for granted, but then again, this is the norm for most places anyway. I checked on the latest improvements going on at Splash, and, as expected, David showed me the expanded stage, went over that CO2 equipment that shoots out the fog over the dance floor, and other smaller projects. It isn’t really fog, and I haven’t had a chance to talk with Cory about the system yet, so I can’t comment too much on it. All I know is that it is just another of the many changes going on as Splash continues to show off one improvement after another. This particular improvement is a first for Red Stick, and one of the few installations of its type in the complete southern section of the country. Splash’s Pimp-N–Hoe Ball extravaganza brought out the crowds for some non-stop booty bouncing. It is just another example of the unusual programs that they offer, and their new and very sexy

photographer Ben is a definite plus to the scene. This 26-year-old stud is really a hot number, and you need to check him out when you go by the club. And don’t forget to check out those other sexy guys too. I can never get enough of Lance, but you have Little Corey, Brad, Quentin, and Danny to admire too. They are all super fine examples of heartthrobs in action. Did I forget Stephen? Of course I didn’t. However, when I think of this sexy number, I have to also say that his other half Ty completes this outstanding duo, a combination of great personalities and absolutely the most handsome couple in this or any city. here’s less than a week until final exams for all you college students, but before you fall into a deep depression, remember right afterward is Summer Vacation. And this season, things are going to be wilder than ever here in Acadiana. To celebrate everybody’s favorite time of year, the Sound Factory and Back Side have a new and improved weekly lineup to kickoff the Summer Break. And if you thought weeknights were great before, you’re sure to love the new additions. And as always, Sound Factory and Back Side are open seven days a week to make sure you always have a place to go for a great time. Mondays are a celebration of Monday Madness with Happy Hour drink prices all night long. And for those of you who have become accustomed to the weekly Pool Tournament at Back Side, don’t worry about a thing. Your favorite competition hasn’ t changed. Tuesdays are Karaoke Night at Sound Factory, hosted by the ever popular Chad Evans. He has everything from oldies and country to dance and rap. Wednesday are now Wild Wednesdays at Sound Factory, with a special themed party every other week. In fact, the second Wild Wednesday celebration is May 21, and it’s a Military Party. So get out your fatigues and other camouflage because you don’t want to miss this Hump

Day celebration. Thursdays are Thirsty Thursday, and while I’m not going to print the specifics, I can assure you it involves drink specials that will top any others in town. Friday nights are Long Friday with specials all night on your favorite longneck beer. Saturdays are now Sizzling Saturday with drink specials on all your favorite liquor, not just well, but all your favorite call and premium brands as well. And to end the week, Sundays begin with Sunday Tea at Back Side and continues to Show Night at Sound Factory. What a way to end the week. And it all begins again the next day. With this new weekly lineup, Sound Factory and Back Side are showing Lafayette that there really can be a celebration every night of the week, and they are single-handedly providing it. So next week when you’re toiling over the books trying to cram that last bit of knowledge into what seems like a saturated brain, remember that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. When you get finished, come by the Sound Factory and Back Side to celebrate another semester under your belt. muscles are getting might hefty there, but when you have these two as subjects of discussion, you have to know that you have the best of the best to brag about. I think they are absolutely the finest guys around, gorgeous from head to toe and all points in between. Goodness! I’m getting excited just thinking about them. I think the older I get the more excited I get in the normal ways, both physical and mental, if you get my drift. That excitement is evident when I’m in Luther’s presence. I don’t think I could ever get enough views of this human masterpiece. Again, you have a guy with a personality that makes you realize you are in the presence of a gentleman and a scholar. He is simply the most amazing example of an outstanding human being that I can name right now. He has a kind of dignity that is apparent when you talk with him, and he is so handsome you can barely take your eyes away from him. Those sparkling eyes just light up your viewing space, and you are aware that you are looking at one fine specimen of humanity. He stands tall, and he is such a great asset to George’s. I think I can say some good things about Johnny too. He is the top notch bartender at Hound Dogs and is one of the most sincere guys I know. He too has such a great personality which is appealing to people when they meet him. He is one of those bartenders who watches constantly and never lets a glass or bottle get empty. That is a sign of excellence and something that people remember and which also prompts them to return for more of this expert’s work ethics. I’ve known Johnny for a long time. In fact, I believe he used to cook and deliver for James and Kyle when they had the kitchen adjacent to the bar. All I can say now is that I enjoy Hound Dogs because of Johnny. I think you will like him too. Stop in and enjoy his bartending skills and take note of the historic old structure than anchors this corner of Main and Seventh. There is another bar that seems to be ready to open on Main Street. It must be another wine bar, which is the going thing to operate these days. There are one or two others in the downtown area, and I have to admit they are nice, but I wonder sometimes why they are so popular. I suppose you could compare their popularity with the kind of popularity that a coffee shop offers. I know coffee house died out for a while, but now they are back. In my college days, a coffee house was sometimes a seedy place like that dungeon one in downtown Fort Worth when I attended Texas Christian University. The smoke was so thick you could slice the air, and you didn’t have to buy your own cigarettes, all you needed to do was inhale. Ah, but those were the days - a coffee dungeon below and a whorehouse above. I remember them well.

y little English boy came by on his daily stroll today and was limping a little. I was busy at the time and didn’t get his attention, so I’m not sure what happened. Goodness! Doesn’t he know I have a remedy for that injury? I have a great massage technique. I didn’t know the lady who lived on Lakeland personally, but she passed away this morning. I am used to seeing her sitting in front of Capitol Grocery. She was always friendly. She will be missed.

Renovations are still going on. I know it’s almost summer, but spring is still in the air, and those cleanup jobs are going strong – more new paint, touching up the plants in the front yards, adding new plants for later beauty, etc. Even a few people get criticized for doing too much. Some people think just because you beautify a yard that you are changing the historical perspective. That is totally not true, and people need to keep their comments to the positive and quit acting like they own the entire area. Now I can understand if you take a shotgun and add an upper story or if you take a porch and glass it in, this is definitely screwing with the historical aspect of the property. Even adding porches is another no-no, but people get historic markers after the changes are made, and they think no one will know the difference. Well, there are pictures out there of all the homes in a given historic area, so never fear, the critics are here. Some of this talk is warranted. Other comments are the drunken blabberings of nosey busybodies. I can vouch for the way things are going with Robert and Brandon’s home. They are keeping things authentic even down to matching paint colors to the period when the house was built way back in 1909. It is such a blessing to know that two guys care so much about their community that they are taking a disgraceful piece of property and returning it to the majesty it once knew when college professors occupied several houses along their quiet and historical street. Now hurry up with the swimming pool guys and that high fence for privacy. We don’t need neighbors complaining about flopping weenies waving in the breeze. And believe me, there is a bunch of the Pinocchio-types in the vicinity, and the fence is also necessary to keep the lawyer bitch from stealing plants. Forevermore, woman! Get a life! People come and go in any neighborhood and any city. I think that is one of the charms of Spanish Town where I live. It’s never boring, and you always get to meet new people. That’s my favorite pastime. I need to work on one neighbor in particular. He needs to smile more. He is really a nice and handsome guy, but he seems to live in another world. He has a great body, dresses nicely, is very handsome, and I’m sure he’s a charmer when you get to know him, but he needs to shed the aloofness he displays, which is probably just his normal way of acting. I’m sure if I corner him, talk to him, and get to know him better that he will turn out to be a charmer first class. I’ll let you know. Maybe he just needs a good massage. In fact, I’d love to meet and interview several people I’ve seen recently. One would be Garrett Bruce, who had the lead in the LSU production of “Hair.” He really did a nice job, and I think he has a bright future ahead of him. I dined at “Serrano’s Salsa Company” on Highland Road last week, and most of the cast was there relaxing before heading over to the theater for another performance. It reminded me that I need to buy the soundtrack for “Hair.” After all, that was a turbulent period of time, but the songs, regardless of the words, are really splendid and bring back so many memories. Garrett’s acting and singing really stood out, and in the last scene, without the long hair, I saw a beautiful individual on that stage. Sometimes I can listen without being obvious and pretty well sum up a person. Many instances will find me avoiding people. They aren’t worth the effort of the printed word. Often, the voice or the way an expression is made will tell you immediately that it would be a waste of time to continue with any kind of relationship with said individual. I don’t mean sexually but in a mutual conversation or casual meeting of the minds. Some people are their own worst enemies like the losers who can’t hold down a job and depend on friends for kindnesses. We have those in our neighborhood too. They aren’t hustlers, but yet they are borderline candidates. They should be ashamed to exist this way. Who would I like to interview? There are lots of names I could list, but I suppose I’ll just watch from the sidelines. Whether they are quarterbacks or pitchers or even theater majors, I think I’ll just leave the interviews up to those who need the work and have to do them for their editors. If it happens, it happens. Life goes on.

Catching Up With Friends

ell, this past weekend was Little John’s army session in Alexandria. I keep telling him to give me some military descriptions. Even with their clothes on, they are certainly sexually inviting and just simply great pieces of eye candy. That’s why nude

beaches are so nice. You see people in a natural element, and they are different from what you find in a clothed environment. Take Black’s Beach when the ships are in. Well, those Navy guys offer a story for another day. They just are anxious to let their hair down, and what better way to do it than to frolic naked on the beach. What is shocking sometimes is to see an actor that you’ve only known onscreen who walks along the beach flopping in the breeze. I dare not reveal my sightings. They are rare, but they are very delightful too. It is interesting to be able to tell their religion - or is that social class options? Whatever! Haulover Beach near Miami is another great place to be. I have a friend who was there recently, and it must have been spring break. His descriptions just about sent me into orbit. I complained to him that had I known he was going, I would have joined him. Oh, well, there will be other times. Besides, I don’t usually partake of a nude beach unless it is in wine country, and to me, that means California. I have to admit that I’m not at all like my friend Gerry, the wine connoisseur, but I do know a nice wine when I taste one. I have my favorites that keep my wine racks overflowing, and it is so nice to sip one or two glasses in the afternoon as I sit on my porch and watch the world go by. Gerry and I love to dine at D’Angelo’s on Jefferson Highway over in Bocage. Not only is the food great, but they serve Sequoia Grove, a vintage wine that definitely pleases the palate. ustin, TX -This year’s 25th International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, May 18, from 8pm - 9:30pm at Republic Square Park located at the southwest corner of the park (4th and San Antonio Streets). One of my favorites is the Jack London merlot that you can only get at Kenwood Winery. That is always one of my stops in the Sonoma wine country. All this talk about wines is getting me thirsty, but I’m passing on it today. I’m actually remembering a dear friend with a Coke and mango rum. I just used the last from the bottle that Leonard gave me before he passed away. I will always keep that brand around because it reminds me of a very dear and caring individual who left us too soon. I suppose I’ll see a lot of you at the Baton Rouge Little Theater this month as they have a nice production of “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” playing now. I loved the movie, and I loved the play when it was at the Saenger in New Orleans. Going from Dolly Parton to Ann-Margaret and now to some unknown (to me) at the theater here may be a letdown, but I don’t think so. This is a lively play, and it is such a joy to watch. Besides, I know all about the Chicken Ranch and Boy’s Town across from Laredo. Been there. Done that. I’ve already bought my season passes for next year, and I want to take in more of the plays at LSU. I’ve always enjoyed the theater even if I have to brave the long drive back to Baton Rouge by taking in plays at the Marigny Theater. I just prefer afternoons in the theaters in New Orleans, but I do adjust quite easily. Sam or Gerry usually join me for local events. John and Phil have a big party coming up as does my favorite sexy lawyer Joseph. I’ll have to do pictures and catch you up on things. There are also a lot of other activities on my agenda, but with camera in hand, I usually record the events, that is, if pictures are allowed. For a while there, I didn’t take my camera with me to bars, especially in New Orleans, because pictures were not allowed. I hope they have altered that policy. And speaking of pictures, I ventured out and had some made recently. I haven’t seen any proofs or heard from the photographer, but my check was cashed before I made it home. Now ain’t that a hoot? I guess he just prefers to do the nudes, and I have to wait in line with my clothes on. Maybe I’ll have them in time for Christmas. Otherwise, I’ll have to seek a refund. That’s about it for this session. I’ll keep taking notes, doing pictures, talking with people, and maybe you will make a connection to my printed words. It is something I look forward too because I meet so many nice people along the way.

Additional prayers, poems, stats, remembrances, literature and declarations will also be presented. “Why don’t we drive past all those places you took me when we first met and see what’s there today?” “Why not, sounds like fun, I don’t think anything is the same anymore though.” Shaun answered. “I’m not so sure, I haven’t been down to the Quarter in years, but you know what they say, a leopard can’t change its spots.” “But time does move on and takes its toll, just look at us, if I had any idea I’d live this long I would have taken better care of myself when I was younger.” Jeff cackled at that one. ‘You’re quoting one of my lines now, you young whipper-snapper.” “I’m not that much younger than you, you know that.” “At this age every year counts, every week, every day, hell your practically still chicken to me.” “I feel like an old rooster.” Shaun replied. The entered the French Quarter onto Royal off of Esplanade, the first bar they encountered was The Golden Lantern. Shaun pointed at the building, “Well if you remember this place had just be open for a short time when we met, but we didn’t make it this far that first night. You were too loaded. “ “That was your entire fault.” Jeff stated flatly. “How the hell do you come by that conclusion?” “Who the hell was pouring the drinks?” “I was, but who the hell was ordering them and downing them as if they were dying of thirst?” “I guess that would have been me. I suppose I was just trying to impress you, all I was doing though was setting the stage for my downfall, I drank so much, so fast I wasn’t able to finish the project I had set out to accomplish and that was to seduce you.. Happens to the best of us or so I’ve been told. I never would have suspected that you had an eye for me that night, as they say I couldn’t see the forest for the trees.” “So what happened the next morning?” Shaun questioned. “As I said, I was too embarrassed from the night before. Believe me if I had picked up then on any of your advances, you would never have slipped out of my greedy paws. I guess, no, I know now, after you’ve told me of course how stupid I really was back then. Or how did you put it, how dumb I was. But honestly till you told me this morning, I had no idea you were of the same mind as I was that morning. Lord had I known, to think what might have been. To think of the many nights I have laid there thinking of you, lusting after you, and with each passing week, month or year, I knew that my time had passed.” Shaun pulled up on the corner of Toulouse and Chartres, they parked in front of a building that was under renovation, and it had been since the Hurricane had almost taken the city off the map. Jeff looked at it and after a moment or two realized that it was the bar where Shaun had been working the night they had first met, he allowed his mind to transport him

back to that first evening. The bar was crowded, he remembered that and the guy behind the bar was the finest thing he had ever laid his eyes on. He caused lust to swell up in Jeff’s heart from the first words he uttered. It was carnal lust that kept him sitting there than afternoon, consuming more alcohol in those two hours than he ever had in the course of a week before then. When had it really turned to love? Love unconsummated, however love just all the same, it was probably the next morning when they had awakened that next day, fully clothed though they were, it felt right just to be lying next to this man. And it was that love that had continued to grow through out all these years in Jeff’s heart. They both had taken lovers in the course of times, and with each of those lovers came a new and diverse set of friendships, but the one constant in all these times was their continuing friendship. It didn’t matter between them who the other one was with at the time, their love for each other though unexpressed continued on. It was almost laughable now that this late in their years the had finally confessed to each other just how they had honestly felt for one and the other. They drove a little further and pulled up in front of Petunias on Louis Street. “This is where we had dinner that first night, but it was called that then.” Shaun placed his hand over Jeff’s.” “At least it’s still a restaurant. Though the name’s different..” “It was The Saint Louis Crepe Shop, but they still serve some of the best crepes in town.” Shaun made the statement as if Jeff hadn’t been in New Orleans all this time, but as if he had just come back recently to live. “I’ve been here a million times since then, I haven’t been locked up in my apartment that long. You’re acting as if I have no memory left at all, I mean it’s not like I have no memory, it’s just that now some things just aren’t all that clear. Next door use to be Mom’s Society Page, I remember that very well. That’s where I met my second lover here, Kevin was his name. You remember Kevin, God you hated that one I think more than anyone else I ever went with.” “I was just very jealous of him to tell the truth, I mean he was so damn good looking. There now I admitted I was jealous of your relationship with him, I really thought it should have been me.” “If you had said that to me at the time, I would have welcomed you with open arms, not to mention opened legs.” Jeff squeezed Shaun’s hand. Shaun leaned over and kissed Jeff’s cheek tenderly. “Funny how life goes isn’t it. After all this time here we are sitting and finally having the talk that would have brought us together thirty some years ago. When I think of all the crap we’ve been through together alone and it makes me wonder how much easier ours lives would have been if we were partners all this time.” “Shaun, this is getting just a bit deep for me, maybe we should drive out of the Quarter, and some of this is making me just a little sad. I don’t need any sadness in my life right now, this is what is likely to be the best day of my remaining time on earth, knowing how you’ve felt about me and I just don’t want to spoil it.” Shaun, did as he was told, he headed out of the French Quarter, picking up I-10 he headed out of the city towards Baton Rouge. They road silently just taking in the sights around them, they did this for mile

after mile until they cleared the city. As soon as they did this Shaun pulled off the interstate and drove casually on the old highway. Jeff liked this and commented about how nice it was to be off the interstate. He made the statement that he was beginning to get hungry, and at the next restaurant they came to Shaun pulled in. It was a rather rustic place, a medium sized building, made of what appeared to be logs from the roadway, and as they approached it they realized that it was indeed. There were just a few cars in the lot and when they entered the place there were just one or two customers. Shaun carefully wheeled Jeff toward the back corner of the room; he knew from experience that Jeff would feel more comfortable there. As they settled in, a waitress approached them; they both ordered coffee and asked for the luncheon menus. They ordered lunch and sat there talking quietly as the place filled up with a lunch crowd and then emptied out again. The food was excellent, like it was prepared in someone’s home kitchen and not a roadside place off the beaten track. They ordered some desserts and continued talking, reminiscing about their pasts, almost reliving each of the days they had spent together and there were many. Just as they were getting ready to leave, two young men entered the restaurant, obvious tourists and obvious gay as well. They sat across the room from Jeff and Shaun, holding hands across the table. Jeff smiled in their direction and thought back to when Shaun and he were their age. Things had changed so much over the years, he reveled in the freedom that these young men had, to be able to sit publically like this holding hands. He cringed to think what would have happened in the past had he held Shaun’s hand anywhere else but in a gay establishment. Shaun rose in preparation to leave. “Are you about ready to head out?” he asked. “Where are we heading/” “I thought we would just drive around aimlessly for an hour or so, then head on back, and I’ll take you shopping.” “Sounds like a plan to me.” Once back in the car, they headed out with no definite location in mind; they drove sometimes seeming like they were going around in circles. It seemed to Jeff that they had passed several spots more than once, but then again he wasn’t sure because he mind was wandering again. The sun was beginning to set, Jeff could hardly believe that they had spent the entire day just driving around, they ended up down in the bayou country. Shaun pulled over next to a small lake and parked where they could get a view of the sun setting. It was beautiful, it was romantic. Jeff slid over on the seat next to Shaun and laid his head on his shoulder. Shaun placed his arm around Jeff and with no words kissed his forehead. It wasn’t very long before Jeff drifted off to sleep. Shaun must have fallen off as well, for when he awoke it was pitch black. He gently moved Jeff over just a little bit and started the car. “We best start heading on home?” But Jeff made no reply, for he had already left for home, snuggled in the arms of the one man he had loved for so long.
