Jazz Fest Music Lineup for Full 7-Day Festival

he return of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell, one of America’s most celebrated celebrations, to its first full seven days of programming since 2005 has inspired Festival organizers to assemble the deepest overall mix of rhythm & blues, rock, jazz, country, blues, gospel, world beat, and more in the 39year history of the event. Eleven stages of simultaneous music programming are complemented by an important, unparalleled Food Fair offering more than 100 varieties of authentic Louisiana cuisine and a stunning array of one-of-a-kind crafts available around the grounds in the Festival’s juried crafts areas. Tickets to Jazz Fest are on sale by specific weekend, with each ticket valid for a single day’s attendance. Tickets for Thursday, May 1 are $30 in advance, $40 at the gate. Tickets for any other Festival day are $40 in advance, $50 at the gate. Children’s tickets (ages 2 - 11) are only $5 in advance or at the gate.

Some 435,000 Attended 2008 French Quarter Festival

pril 11, 12, 13, 2008, marked the 25th anniversary and a record year for French Quarter Festival. This year’s attendance figures indicate that approximately 435,000* festival-goers basked in the sunshine, ate, drank, danced, shopped, stayed in the hotels, enjoyed the French Quarter, and became immersed in southern hospitality as only New Orleans can deliver. This award-winning festival, which began in 1984, has grown to become the largest free music festival in the South. Eighteen stages throughout the French Quarter presented the best in New Orleans music, representing every genre from traditional and contemporary jazz to R

& B and New Orleans funk, brass bands, folk, gospel, classical, opera, Cajun Zydeco, Latin World, International, as well as musical stages for children. Over 65 food and beverage booths located in Jackson Square, Woldenberg Riverfront Park and the Louisiana State Museum’s Old U.S. Mint made up the “World’s Largest Jazz Brunch,” a signature event, featuring authentic local cuisine from renowned area restaurants, many of whom have been with the Festival its entire 25 years. Record sales were recorded by both food and beverage vendors. Festival-goers attended special events throughout the three-day weekend, including almost 1,000 guests at the Thursday night kickoff party: ‘TGIF’ – Thank Goodness it’s Festival! – aboard the Steamboat Natchez. French Quarter Festival opened Friday with an official second-line parade, music starting at 11am, historic courtyard tours, and a Pirate’s Alley Art Show. Saturday activities continued with the Acme World Championship Oyster Eating Contest and a Battle of the Bands. Sunday’s ‘Dancing at Dusk’ grew in popularity as dancers filled the 400 block of Royal Street. The event was produced by French Quarter Festivals, Inc., (FQFI) the 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, which also produces Satchmo SummerFest in August and Christmas New Orleans Style in December. Visitor Numbers Increase to 7.1 Million in New Orleans

he number of visitors to New Orleans increased from 3.7 million in 2006 to 7.1 million in 2007, according to a survey conducted by the University of New Orleans Hospitality Research Center for the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau and New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation, yet the hospitality industry has much work ahead before it returns to pre-Katrina levels. The 2007 New Orleans Area Visitor Profile report showed: *In 2007, the total number of visitors was 7.1 million and those visitors spent a total of $4.8 billion. In 2006, the total number of visitors was 3.7 million and those visitors spent a total of $2.8 billion. During a healthy year prior to Katrina New Orleans hosted 8.5 million - 9 million visitors annually. *Overnight visitors stayed an average of 3.8 nights in 2007. *70 percent of visitors indicated they were here for pleasure, 13.6 percent came for a convention or tradeshow, and 11.5

viduals that had inquired about visitation from NOMCVB and NOTMC, as well as those who booked their travel reservations to New Orleans via the Hotels.com and Travelocity links on the NOMCVB and NOTMC web pages. Combined with the online inputs were intercept survey data collected during 2007 events and festivals, which included French Quarter Festival, Mardi Gras, Family Gras and Voodoo Festival. Also included were intercept data from the WWII Museum, and a TNS email panel of visitors to New Orleans. In total, over 6,000 observations were analyzed. In addition, a faxed hotel survey, and a phone survey of residents to determine the number of visiting friends and relatives were conducted. New Orleans’ tourism industry was off to a strong start in the first quarter of 2008, with victories such as the NBA AllStar Game, college bowl games, Mardi Gras, a 20,000-plus-person citywide convention and a lineup of major conventions and festivals through the end of the year. The New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation serves as the City of New Orleans’ official leisure travel promotion agency. 25th International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Service May 18

pride corner/new orleans by Todd Blauvelt he Bourbon Pub did nothing short of spectacular in hosting the Pride Extravaganza on the 12th of April in a strong show of support for New Orleans Gay Pride and our need to raise money to put on PrideFest 2008. The incredible event was the brainchild of none other than the fabulous Pat McArdle of the Bourbon Pub. Over 40 local businesses donated auction items for the silent auction organized by Pat and assisted by Corey, P.J. and Mark, to include a wonderful painting by Pat’s partner Jacey Frew, who also photographed the event. Food was donated by Pat, floral arrangements galore by Irwin Earth, and stimulating sounds and light design by DJ Dwayne and DJ Blair Q with the Bourbon Pub’s own JD volunteering his services to serve up the liquid libations. Live performances were performed by Derrick Penton and Jesse Authbment, and Miss Gay Pride

2004 Savanna DeLoreon organized a drag show with performances by Miss Gay Pride 2005 Tami Tarmac and Miss Gay Pride 2006 Elizabeth Bouvier. The event raised very near if not more than $3,000 (some monies are yet to be collected and tallied). So many thanks go out to all of the management and staff of the Bourbon Pub and to all who attended, and donated time, services, and auction items to make this “Extravaganza” the extravaganza that it turned out to be. This huge show of support for Gay Pride New Orleans is what it’s all about. Thank you, thank you, thank you. We are all excited about the return of Grace Fraga who we expect will leave us all in stitches performing her stand up comedy act at Cowpokes on Friday, April 25th at 10pm as a benefit for PrideFest 2008. Tickets are $20 and available at the door. Grace, Miss Diva Latina, is a 2004 Big Easy Entertainment Award winner for Best Supporting Actress in a Play (Rio

Seco). She’s also been nominated for a 2004 Marquee Award and a Storer Boone Award, both for Best Actress in a Comedy (Rio Seco). She started hitting the boards in New Orleans in 2001 in plays like Neil Simon’s Broadway Bound (Blanche), Tennessee Williams’ Hello from Bertha (Goldie), musicals like The King and I and Bells are Ringing. Grace is an avid supporter of new playwrights and their plays. These credits include: Timm Holt’s Aurora Borealis, Louis Routh’s Bloody Mary Sunday, Charles Kerb’s Sexy Music Again, and Dalt Wonk’s Rio Seco. She is currently living in Los Angeles where she has performed at Coleman & Smith Artistic Company Theater in the lead role of Wilma (The Prodigals) and at Second Stage Theater in Anaheim in the lead roles of Samantha (The Virus) and Valerie (Date In Time). Grace is a whole lotta Latin laughs; actor, comedian and margarita momma. Grace’s comedy is fueled by hot sauce flashes. Grace describes herself as a “Spanish Valley Girl with NeimanMarcus tastes and a K-Mart budget” performing stand up comedy in Los Angeles,

Las Vegas, New York, New Orleans, Chicago, Reno and San Francisco. She has performed as a featured comedian at Improv Ontario, Improv New York, New York Comedy Club and The Ice House. This show should be a real treat for us all and we hope you can attend. Grace will also appear at Cowpokes again in May on the 23rd as a benefit for PrideFest New Orleans and will perform at the Festival in June. Auditions closed today for our production of Steve Patrick’s original comedy Smoke to be performed at the Marigny Theatre in May and June to benefit PrideFest. Smoke is a fantasy that crosses all cultural, sexual, socioeconomic, race, religious and gender boundaries. Although the play is set within the “gay” community, only the most intolerant homophobic will be offended by the content. A spirit, who must wander the earth for 8 score and 2 years, is continuous throughout the play, guiding, explaining, and leaving us to laugh and think about whom, or what, we are and what we wish for ourselves and / or others. In Smoke a woman, who may or may not be a lesbian, is given the extraordinary chance to visit different times and places. She helps her gay greatgrandson discover a family secret and prepares him for what is to come. She is with a gay thug, who has been killed, on his journey to - well, what - is it heaven or hell or something else? She brings two gay men together for a lifetime of love and companionship. Then, in a twist of fate, she is left with a decision that will change another person’s existence forever. Be prepared to leave reality, your ingrained viewpoints, and prejudices at the door. Come Out! Come out! Wherever you are!

preached last Sunday on Coming Out (the sermon video is on-line at www.bigeasymcc.com.home.htm for those of you who are suckers for punishment). At this point about half of you have probably done what Dorothy Sayers advised her readers back in the thirties; she was reviewing a book, and she wrote: “this is not a book to be put aside lightly – it should be thrown with great force!.” The last thing you need when settling down in a bar or at home to peep through Ambush is a sermon! Well grit your teeth – here comes a sermon! Try as we might to avoid the fact, living in the closet carries a lot of consequences. This is not to say that all must immediately come out – I understand the many reasons that it may be dangerous for a person to come out, but the ideal still stands. Sexuality is an integral, God-given part of each and every one of us; we don’t choose it, it is engraved upon us in our mother’s womb (or at least so early as to make no difference). It is as natural and vital a part of us as is our skin colour or our eye colour – and as morally neutral as these things. If we are forced to live as if it is shameful, then it is so much a part of us that we will

start to carry shame – and the straight community will understandably start to believe that it is something shameful. A life lived undercover not only inhibits and represses us as individuals, it inhibits and represses the whole community. Since people starting coming out in droves over in the U.K. the situation for the gay community has transformed! We went from Margaret Thatcher (shudder) to full equality in only fifteen years - seeing a much loved public figure treating their sexuality as merely a fact and not a source of shame has a powerful affect upon ordinary people. People are not born understanding diversity – they have to learn about things that are different to themselves. Straight people have only one source of reliable information about homosexuality, and that is us – the gay community. How then can we teach the truth if we are acting as if our God-given sexuality is something to be hidden, something sinful and wicked? When I came out at the age of thirteen I had a terrible time, my parents took a while to understand because they were ignorant of what it meant to be gay. They had been brought up to believe that homosexuality meant sad, wretched old men preying on small boys – and they thought that this was what I was telling them I would become. In

reality I was just fessing up to liking guys! – pure and simple. This was one plain biological fact that in no way prevented me from leading a meaningful, loving, happy life unless others prevented me from doing so. My parents are wonderful people, and now they feel angry that they were never prepared for the possibility of having a gay son – that they were fed a bunch of lies that led them to handle the situation badly and cause me (and them) great pain. Now they are as supportive and loving as it is possible to be, and were at my wedding when I married my husband Leon at the local city hall back in London! Coming out liberates you, but may not make life easier, just more like life. Life does not carry a guarantee of ease or simplicity, but must be real – we only have one shot, and when we carve a fake version of ourselves (a straight version of ourselves) to do our living for us then we cheat ourselves of the richness and growth that life can provide. Eventually, we start to confuse the dummy for the real thing – and then the lie, the falsehood takes over and crowds out the real person. From a pastor’s point of view, being forced (or choosing) to live in the closet is a spiritual mine field. God is truth, and God hates nothing God has made, therefore living in the closet is effectively saying ‘I choose society’s values over God; I care more what my friends may think than what God thought when I was made me as I am.’ This is a kind of blasphemy – ‘Darest thou to call unclean something The Lord your God has made?,’ and it is all the worse because to our infinite shame it is often the church that has forced this blasphemy on people. We must stand up to

people who would have us stay in the closet – we are born for the wide open expanses God made for us, not to be huddled in some damp little closet and told to behave and keep quiet! Staying in the closet is not for your own good – it never is - any thing of real value will still be there after coming out. No really loving parent, or friend, or relative is going to reject us for our sexuality, and that is the fear, that coming out will prove that the love we relied upon was not love at all, but possession, or just plain flesh and blood. Let me just close with a thought - can you conceive of civil rights, and of giants like Martin Luther King if 75% of the African American population of the USA had ‘passed’ and treated their race as something to be hidden, as a guilty secret? If we ‘pass’ then we are leaving as bad a future for the next generation of LGBT youth as the past we lived through.

ongratulations and a great big thanks to our neighbors in Mobile! Once again the members of Mobile Pride proved that hard work and cooperation pay off. Mobile Pride was celebrated April 4 – 6. For four of the past five years, I have had the privilege of participating in Mobile Pride and this was one of the best yet. The Pride committee actively seeks out all the diversity that is the GLBT Community. The Southern Renegades participated for the first time this year as well. Renegade Darwin was instrumental by inviting the Lords of Leather and Michael Albrecht, Mr. Louisiana Leather 2008, to help them celebrate. The weekend kicked off at B-Bob’s downtown with a Leather, Bear, Biker, Uniform Night hosted by the Southern Renegades. Renegade Darwin welcomed everyone to the celebration emphasizing the 10 members of the Lords of Leather in attendance. Darwin also introduced Mr. Louisiana Leather, Michael Albrecht, to the crowd as the evening was a fund-raiser to help offset the expenses involved with representing Louisiana in the International Mr. Leather competition coming up over Memorial Day weekend. Michael seemed to have quite the time selling those raffle tickets. The crowd was definitely supportive and happy to have

Michael as the first ever Leather title holder to participate in Mobile's Pride Parade. All night long, while we were entertained in B-Bob’s, the rain came. Lasting into Saturday morning, we wondered if the parade would be cancelled. After 9 hours and over 8 inches of rain that included street flooding, the rain turned into a Rainbow just in time. With the skies clearing, the floats started lining up. Someone was definitely smiling on the GLBT community. Michael and I joined Cavaliers Associate members, and Mobile residents, Bubba and Eric to once again lead the parade. Groups from not just Mobile but from as far as Biloxi to Pensacola participated, showing the crowds a great time. I was surprised to see how many folks made it out considering how bad the weather had been just that morning. The Renegades were definitely a busy group. After the parade they hosted a Bar-B-Q for guests and members. Darwin and Raphael had prepared their home and with the help of several other Renegades provided a great spread. They did not stop there however. Saturday night they hosted the Official Mobile Pride Men’s Party on the back patio at Visions Twist. As a fund-raiser, they raffled many prizes and gift packs. Heading to the beach this Memorial Day? Well the Southern Renegades are ready to welcome you there. The Co. of Men will be hosting a Welcome to Pensacola Party at the Round-Up on Friday, May 23. The Who’s Tommy at NOCCA

or all those keeping track of such things, NOCCA’s production of The Who’s Tommy was not only the most exciting production of a musical seen in New Orleans in the last twenty years but it was as good as, and in some respects even better than, the Broadway version. Time has not dimmed the power of this rock opera. If anything, its themes, major and minor, of child abuse, pedophilia, the transience of fame, the acceptance of one’s true self, etc., are more resonant now than when it made its theatrical debut some fifteen years ago. Director Blake Coheley didn’t merely replicate the Broadway production but brought his own genius to it, beautifully staging the show with a cinematic sweep as one scene flowed into the next. His dances filled the stage with 30+ bodies exactingly conveying the change in youthful moves from the 1940s thru the ‘60s. As the “deaf, dumb and blind boy,” Michael Moore could have been a bit more of the rocker but radiated an inner charisma that served him best at the end of his amazing journey as he beatifically accepted the fate of his life. Bruce Landry’s Captain Walker achieved the perfect balance of loving his child while being immensely frustrated by the situation he finds himself in. Samantha Helmstetter made Mrs. Walker a more sympathetic mother than I recall from Broadway though finally got to show off her astonishing voice and let loose her frustration in Smash The Mirror. As the cheesy opportunist Uncle Ernie, Matt Artigues strikingly portrayed a child molester with a brave characterization in one of Coheley’s most imaginatively staged numbers. And in the find of the show, Josh Smith took what had previously been a throwaway role and captured Cousin Kevin’s toughness, smugness, swagger and, ultimately, true affection for his little cousin, drawing the audience’s eyes to him whenever he was on stage. An acting/singing/dancing triple threat, Smith seems destined for a great career in theater, ballet or both. In addition to the leads, the entire large cast was topnotch with special mention going to Christopher Newhouse who made the 10 year old Tommy a sentient if closed off being. Musical Director Jefferson Turner coaxed a generally fine performance from his student band though they seemed slightly more attuned to the score’s “musical” side than its rowdier “rock” one. Julie Winn’s costumes well-defined the various eras. Gary Solomon, Jr.’s lighting combined rock’n’roll spectacle with scenesetting theatricality to become another persona on stage. One could carp that without knowing the original song cycle, some characters’ relationships were, especially at the beginning, unclear. And, unfortunately, some problems with the sound system made it

difficult sometimes to catch all the lyrics. But this is the kind of vibrant, vital theater that all of our local theaters should be presenting.

V To The Tenth at New Orleans Arena

ne cannot help but admire the magnificent movement Eve Ensler and her Vagina Monologues have spawned in the last ten years to end violence against women and girls. And bravo to her and her krewe for selecting New Orleans, the “vagina of America” as she put it (“love her fishy taste”) for a two day 10th anniversary celebration benefitting local groups. But would the play, first seen in a small off-Broadway theater hold up in an arena with a puff-puff celebrity cast? Booooyyyyy, or rather, ggiiirrrllllll, did it! Beginning with a different kind of flood than the Katrina-induced one, Doris Roberts, along with Didi Conn, was ineffably sympathetic as a woman who hasn’t “been ‘down there’ since 1953.” Kerry Washington and Christine Lahti were both fine as women dealing with, respectively, a man who loved everything about vaginas, and a domineering husband who wanted his wife to go, um, hairless. Our own Charmaine Neville delivered a heartfelt Do You Know What It Means? and, detailing the things she missed when she returned home wondered “Where was the UPS man? I wanted to see those legs.” Amen to that! Rosario Dawson and Kristen Krepela, a Croatian actress, made the horrific use of rape in wartime Bosnia extremely touching in the profoundly sad telling of one woman’s experiences. New to me, and very good in the Boys Don’t Cry mold, was a monolog performed by Calpernia Addams and Leslie Townsend that was recently included in an all-trans cast performance of The Vagina Monologues in Los Angeles. Ali Larter, Stéphanie Bataille and Amber Tamlyn rockingly let everyone know not to mess with them just because they were wearing a short skirt. In one of the evening’s highlights, Lilia Aragon, Lela Costa, Shirley Knight and Monique Wilson represented a worldwide sisterhood, and parsed, dissected, analyzed and reclaimed the vulgarisms cunt, coño (Spanish), fica (Italian) and puki (Portuguese) to hysterically funny effect. Everyone understood every word of what each of the brilliant actresses said even if they didn’t understand the actual language they were speaking. Another fun sequence was Jennifer Beals and three of The L Word women demonstrating different kinds of moans women make during sex; the AfricanAmerican moan, “Aw, shit!”, got the biggest audience response of the night. And in what proved to be the evening’s dramatic highlight, Jane Fonda gave a penetrating account of being in the delivery room as a relative gave birth; amidst

her activism and aerobics, it’s been easy to forget how great an actress Fonda is. Liz Mikel, a self-described “big, angry, black woman” who earlier had ranted against insensitive doctors (“Why the flashlight like Nancy Drew?”), stepped into an indisposed Oprah’s shoes for the final, newly-written VM of a big-hearted local woman preparing a metaphorical meal. Though moving and wonderfully done by Mikel, I failed to see the vagina connection; in a post-Katrina world of increased sexual violence, Ensler’s focus struck me as somewhat misplaced. If the evening ended with a rousing RE-S-P-E-C-T done by Faith Hill, Jennifer Hudson and Neville, its emotional highlight was the introduction of Dr. Denis Mukwege from the Congo who is doing heroic work to heal women devastated by violence. In that, and for all of its 2+ hours, V To The Tenth was a glorious event celebrating the humanist in all of us.

A Soldier’s Play/The Bluest Eye at The Anthony Bean Community Theater

hat nine months from now, America may have its first black president makes Charles Fuller’s Pulitzer Prize-winning A Soldier’s Play of 1982, not so much passé as hauntingly prescient in its ultimate hope for this country. Wilbert L. Williams’ gripping production of this too seldom seen work reminded us that though much has been achieved, much has yet to be done. Taking place in 1944 on a Louisiana Army base, Soldier’s Play sets a murder mystery against the background of black troops aching to be sent off to war to fight for their country. Two Captains, the white Charles Taylor and the black Richard Davenport vie with each other and against the system to discover who killed a black sergeant. Williams’ direction took a little while to come into focus, but once it did, it grabbed the audience and didn’t let go. Along with his actors, Williams shaped a true sense of the unit’s cohesiveness. Anthony Bean was all righteous anger and spit’n’polish as Davenport and he was well-matched by Nick Thompson as Taylor. Genuine sparks flew between them and if it got a little overwrought at times, without that level of engagement their debates could’ve turned awfully dry. Harold X. Evans added another fine portrayal to his gallery as the dead sergeant whose self-hatred has curdled his soul. Although all the soldiers were very good, Dui Moorman stood out as the tragic country boy C.J. Memphis. Without ever falling into caricature, Moorman infused the character with authentic life and an underhanded intelligence rather than just playing the stereotypical small town hick. It’s a mark of the production’s high caliber that even the two relatively small parts of the white officers who are implicated in the murder were played well and convincingly by Matthew Madden and T.J. Toups. With a persuasively lived-in set designed by Chad Talkington, this was another commendable achievement for Anthony Bean Community Theater. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for The Bluest Eye, Lydia Diamond’s adaptation of Toni Morrison’s novel which came off as a three dimensional

audiobook. Diamond failed to transform the book into a worthy dramatic vehicle and, with little dramatic tension, its literary roots showed throughout its tale of young Pecola and her sad life. I’m not sure what else she could’ve done with this material, but Adella Gautier’s static staging did not enliven things. Those scenes which Diamond actually dramatized, however, such as when Pecola gets her first period, Gautier brought alive movingly. As the suffering Pecola, Coti Gayles’ wonderfully transparent emotions brought muted passion to this downtrodden character. Alozia St. John and Giselle Nakhid gave authoritative performances as Pecola’s friends and the audience’s guides. Despite The Bluest Eye’s flaws, I do admire ABCT for presenting this new work.

Crimes Against Nature at Backyard Ballroom

rimes Against Nature starts off with an animated (in every sense of the word) sex scene and keeps getting more outrageous as it goes along. Billed as “A Love Story,” it’s an episodic road comedy with tragic flourishes as when conjoined twins fall off a train and are eaten by alligators. A throwback to Off Off-Broadway in the 1960s, CAN owes much to commedia dell’arte, Punch & Judy shows, and underground comics in its gender-bending celebration of sex, bestiality, death and dismemberment. And if all that sounds like something from an old Jerry Springer show, Otter’s script sprinkles it with such joie de vie that what could’ve been somewhat twee emerges as wicked fun. Against Dennis Monn’s pop art set on which a two-dimensional cactus, train and giant bong appear, CAN tells the tale of Happy Daye (Monn) and Gaye Daye (Otter). These lovers traverse the desert and head to the Big Easy where the churlish Happy succumbs to NOLA’s evil charms. As Gaye, innocent if naughty at heart, gives away all sorts of bodily parts to support Happy’s drug habit, one has to wonder why she stands by her slug of a man but eventually they triumph. While one wishes the verbal dexterity matched the show’s visual wit, it’s all delightfully perverse. As Gaye, Otter achieved true pathos like a weirded out Giulietta Masina from Fellini’s movies. The androgynous Miss Led, busty Veronyka Belleto and protean Dwight C. Byrd, whose Hump and Dump just may be the strangest character(s) I’ve ever seen on stage, all contributed to the manic fun. Weenie jokes; a dance on roller skates; Mardi Gras-esque costumes by Otter & Oliver Manhattan; fabulous wigs from Fifi Mahoney’s; Thomas Little & Lisa vanWambeck’s dirty animation; a very well-trained dog; and nudity both real and illusory, further add to the merriment. Not long after I saw Crimes Against Nature, Otter and her husband were in a terrible car accident. I wish them the speediest of recoveries and look forward to seeing more works birthed from her extravagant imagination.

Times Past: Part Two

emembering back to that first night now, Jeff wondered what life would have been like for him, no not him but the two of them, he had to include Shaun here as well, if that evening had taken a completely different course of action. What if indeed he had not passed out like he did, neither of them, what would it have been like if they had let lose on the feelings he was so sure they felt at that time. He doubted it would have been a one night stand, but more than likely the start of a beautiful sexually relationship. But would it have lasted a lifetime? Would it have lasted just as long as this undying friendship had gone on? Questions that really could never be answered now, with the passing of so much time, but it was nice to think back and remember and to contemplate how things might have been. He had loved Shaun since that first encounter in that French Quarter bar and he continued to love him to this day. He heard a car approaching. And shielding his eyes from the early morning sun he glanced down the street to see if it was Shaun’s. He glanced at his watch, Shaun was always prompt, but he was early today. He smiled to himself and allowed his thoughts to shift back to that morning they had awakened together side by side, fully clothed each in that hotel room. Shaun rolled over in his sleep and engulfed Jeff in his arms. Jeff could feel his hardness pressed against him, he said nothing feigning sleep and snuggled, pressing against the hunk from the bar. Shaun stretched out, all the muscles in his body flexing at once. He yawned audibly. “Are you awake yet.” He inquired of Jeff. “Semi and what about you?” “Getting there I think.” Was Shaun’s reply. ”Hell what time did we stumble in, and where the hell are we.” “I was hoping you could tell me the answer to your first question. My hotel room answers the second.” “Well we’re both fully dressed so I guess we were both good boys.” “I’m afraid so.” Jeff truly meant that statement and was wondering how Shaun might be feeling about it, but the fact that he had not moved at all nor seemed to want to led him to think he felt the same. Jeff turned facing Shaun and pulling him closer so he could feel his hardness as well. Jeff reached down taking him in his fist and squeezing tightly. He kissed his cheek and taking his hand moved it down to his crotch. Shaun kissed him lightly again on the cheek, while they stroked each other firmly. Lord it felt so good and after drinking so much the night before Jeff was afraid he was going to let loose of himself to soon. Sitting up in the bed he said “I think I need some food.” Not knowing what was happening he smiled at Jeff released his grasp and replied. “I think I need a drink. He stood up and casually began to strip off his clothes. Dropping them at that side of the bed. Completely nude now, he turned to face Jeff, “Why don’t you order something to eat and me a double Bloody Mary. I’m going to hit the shower.” His manhood was bobbing as he walked toward the bathroom, it was truly impressive, and Jeff wanted to strip as well and follow him there, but he wasn’t sure he should. If he had wanted him to wouldn’t he have asked him to join him there? That was what had happened, but in his mind now he thought it should have gone another way and that was… “I was hoping you could answer the first question. My hotel more answers the second.” “Well were both fully dressed so I guess we were good boys?” “Afraid so, but I guess we could rectify that.” “We could if you want to.” Shaun replied. he was completely nude next to him. “Now your turn, my love.” He slowly undressed Jeff. They sat on the bed now, facing each other, their manhood erect, their emotions aflame and their desire running wild. Jeff lowered his head into Shaun’s crotch. Shaun groaned loudly and then reciprocated almost at once. His hands massaging the other mans chest, and as he sat up again his hands forced Jeff onto his back. Rising on his knees, Shaun swung one leg across Jeff’s torso and without any prompting, but from experience mounted Jeff, as only one with his knowledge would find successful on the first try. He closed his eyes feeling nothing but ecstasy within himself and the joy of giving his unconditional love to another. He was an unashamed young man lost totally in his quest to bring Jeff to a climax he’d never known before; something that this man had no idea was within him. Jeff heard a car honking in the distance, or so he thought, but it wasn’t, he slowly opened his eyes breaking his fantasy of years gone by, it was Shaun, and he had pulled up while Jeff had been daydreaming. “What were you doing old man, day-dreaming?” He shouted, getting out of the car. He walked around and opened the door for Jeff

in the spotlight LIFE’S A DRAG: A Celebration of Life and Laughter! debuts at Oz May 3 during Jazz Fest

IFE’S A DRAG: A Celebration of Life and Laughter! is the first art show/silent auction presented by Pensacola artist James Amerson. The exhibition opens Saturday, May 3 at Oz New Orleans, 800 Bourbon Street, 5:30-8pm. A portion of the proceeds benefits New Orleans Habitat for Humanity to assist with their efforts of helping people rebuild their lives after the effects of Hurricane Katrina.

Unveiling of the collection of Pop Art is set for 6pm. Bidding closes at 7:45pm. The artwork is acrylic on 36x48 canvas spotlighting the snapshots taken by Amerson at Mardi Gras and Southern Decadence, focusing on the “life and laughter” that these two events bring to thousands of people. He has created a "harem" of "lucious beauties" which are sure to please art lovers out there. According to Amerson, "Our show will be held during the second week of Jazz Fest. We hope that you can come see the artwork, hear some great music and hopefully take home a little “laughter” as well as helping others. Amerson, 46, currently lives in Pensacola, Florida. After being a hair stylist and salon owner for over 25 years, he found it time to follow his love of art and

So where are we headed today, Walmart, Rouses, or somewhere else.” “Before we go shopping I think I’d just like to go for a drive.” “Just point me in the direction. You want to go. ’ve read several books lately, but I have to put Blind Fall by Christopher Rice at the top of the list. Maybe this is because I’ve been a fan of his writing since that first novel, A Density of Souls, was published. I read this book on a flight to San Francisco, and I followed that one with The Snow Garden and Light Before Day. Blind Fall manages to interweave controversial issues such as homophobia and the moral dilemma that is war with a gripping, fast-paced storyline. This is typical of Rice’s writing style, and it manages to hold your interest from beginning to end. His characters experience loss, heartbreak, and conflict in a way that engages the reader and evokes sympathy for his characters. In this book, his main character, John Houck, is haunted by a split-second failure that nearly killed his Marine captain, Mike Bowers, and this incident in Iraq nearly ended his military career. He was dishonored and disgraced in his own eyes, and he tries to redeem himself by showing up unannounced at Bowers’ home. It is here that he finds Bowers brutally murdered and witnesses one Alex Martin seemingly escaping from the house. Houck is actually shocked to learn that Martin was not Bowers’ killer, but in

fact his lover and the killer’s next intended victim. The two quickly realize that their only hope of avenging the death of a man they both loved and outwitting the real killer is through each other. Along the way, Houck must confront some of his own demons and question the beliefs that have shaped his very being while at the same time teaching Alex to protect and defend himself. This is first book by Rice where he writes from the perspective of a heterosexual male and really does a fine job with John Houck, the fallen Marine. If you haven’t read any of his books before, I suggest you get started. He has a masterful style with words, and he has made a name for himself in the literary world. A Seafood Dinner

ello my little chickadees, today we are going to have an ocean inspired meal. I am featuring a delicious Australian fish and stuffing it with some local crab meat. The Orange Roughy is one of my favorite fish, but if you want to go strictly local, a mild firm fish will do. So let’s not waste anymore time, because the quicker we start cooking, the sooner we’ll be eating

BOILED SHRIMP 6 cups water 2 tablespoons salt 2 bay leaves 1 lemon, halved 1 stalk celery with leaves, cut into 3 inch cubes 1 onion, quartered 2 pounds unpeeled fresh shrimp cocktail sauce (recipe follows) Place first five ingredients in a Dutch oven; bring to a boil. Add shrimp and cook three to five minutes. Drain well; rinse in cold water. Cover and chill. Peel shrimp and devein, if desired. Serve with cocktail sauce. COCKTAIL SAUCE: 2/3 cup chili sauce ¼ cup lemon juice 3 tablespoons prepared horseradish

2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce ¼ teaspoon hot sauce Combine all ingredients, stirring until smooth. Cover and chill at least two hours. Yield: I cup.

CRAB STUFFED ORANGE ROUGHY 1 large egg, slightly beaten 1/3 cup fine, dry bread crumbs 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion 1 tablespoon finely chopped green pepper 2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning 1 teaspoon dry mustard 2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh parsley ½ pound fresh lump crab meat, drained 8 (5-6 ounce) orange roughy fillet 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons lemon juice ¼ teaspoon paprika Mornay Sauce (recipe follows) Combine first eight ingredients; stir well. Add crab meat, and stir gently. Spoon ¼ cup crab meat mixture onto each fillet, and roll up to secure filling. Place rolls seam side down, in a lightly greased 13 x 9 –inch baking dish. Dot butter on each fillet; sprinkle with lemon juice and paprika. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees for thirty minutes or until fish flakes easily. Serve with Mornay sauce. Yield: eight servings.

My first question was, is Ronald going to be there too? No answer to that as yet but there will be financial support, apple dippers for all, and gifts will be given to the children that attend. Members of Colage are being asked to attend this family values PrideFest to take advantage of the McDonald’s goodies. Colage (Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere) is the organization of Gay parents and children. The local chapter is active and has been close to PFLAG since its inception. Julie has made it her personal goal to support their events and encourage other PFLAG members to do the same. McDonald’s is under fire by American Family Association for supporting their GLBT employees and friends. MORNAY SAUCE 1 tablespoon butter 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1 cup milk ½ teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground white pepper 1 egg yolk, beaten 2 tablespoons (1/2 ounce) shredded Swiss cheese 2 tablespoon freshly grated Parmesan cheese Melt butter in a heavy saucepan over low heat, add flour, stirring until smooth. Cook one minute, stirring constantly. Gradually add milk; cook over medium heat, until mixture is thick and bubbly. Combine egg yolk and whipping cream. Gradually stir into mixture. Cook, stirring constantly about three minutes. Add cheeses, stirring until melted. Remove from heat. Yield: 1 ¼ cups.

BALSAMIC ROASTED NEW POTATOES 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 lbs new potatoes, unpeeled and quartered 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme 1 teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper Heat oil in a large cast-iron skittle over medium-high heat. Add potatoes and next four ingredients. Toss. Remove from heat; place in oven. Roast potatoes, uncovered at 425 degrees for thirty minutes. Add vinegar and toss well. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast, uncovered for another six minutes. Serve at once.

CRISPY COLE SLAW 1 small cabbage, shredded (1½

pounds) 1 medium onion, chopped 1 carrot, scraped and shredded 1 small green pepper, chopped 1 small red pepper, chopped 1 small yellow pepper, chopped 1 cup sugar 2/3 cup white vinegar ½ cup vegetable oil ¼ teaspoon ground white pepper 1 teaspoon celery seeds ¼ teaspoon mustard seeds Combine the first six ingredients in a bowl; stir. Combine sugar and the remaining six ingredients in a saucepan; bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves. Pour vinegar mixture over cabbage mixture; toss gently. Cover and chill at least two hours. Serve with a slotted spoon. Yield; eight servings.

BEER BATTERED HUSH PUPPIES 1 ½ cups self-rising yellow corn meal ½ cup self-rising flour 2 small onions, finely chopped 1 medium green pepper, finely chopped 1 tomato, finely chopped 1 large egg, lightly beaten 1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1/8 teaspoon hot sauce 1 cup beer Vegetable oil Combine cornmeal and flour in a large bowl; stir well. Add onion, pepper, and tomato. Stir in egg, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce. Add beer, stirring well. Pour oil to a depth of two inches into a small Dutch oven; heat to 375 degrees. Carefully drop batter by rounded tablespoons into hot oil; fry hush puppies, a few at a time until golden brown, turning once. Drain on paper towels. Yield: 3 ½ dozen See you next week. In the e-mail AFA says that the CEO, Jim Skinner, is aggressively promoting gay and lesbian business ventures. Skinner says that McDonald’s has an obligation to use their size to make a difference on the world. I say BRAVO, McDonald’s. AFA calls it a gay agenda which we all know does not exist. McDonald’s has donated money to NGLCC saying they share NGLCC’s passion for business growth. I believe that we all share this passion and should support McDonald’s, NGLCC and all GLBT individuals that wish to enter the business community. Your support is needed. Calling All Doctors

have recently been appointed to the PFLAG Hot Line. For several years, Rev. Laurie Reed took on this responsibility and PFLAG wishes to thank her for serving PFLAG and the community well. Being new at the job, I don’t have as who are trying to change this story despite the overwhelming odds and obstacles. This book is also priced at $26. Steinberg has written two previous books and both won South Africa’s major literary award, but Sizwe’s Test is the first to be published in the United States. Again, this is a very disturbing story about a society caught up in a tragic situation with no clear solutions, but Steinberg has managed to balance his caring and compassionate nature in order to accurately explain Sizwe’s feelings.

n a personal note, I learned a little more about Doctors With out Borders from an acquaintance. At last year’s Tennessee Williams Festival in New Orleans, I met a young doctor at the Tab Hunter session who was about to leave for work with this group. I hadn’t really heard of the group until I started a conversation with him, and I’ve wondered where he ended up. I can’t recall where his assignment was located, but I’ve often wondered what happened to him. Perhaps he is doing something similar to what Dr. Reuter is doing in Africa. I wish him all the best. I only wish more people understood the work of Doctors Without Borders.

But when asked about a good gay doctor, I was at a loss. Dr. Kaiser is now living in Baton Rouge but I don’t know where he is practicing. The other two names that came to mind are not taking new patients, I’ve been told. Luckily, I had a few friends like my boss Rip who knw other gay doctors in the community; and I was able to pass on the referral to the caller in need. All this history to simply say, that if you are gay and have a service in the area, I want to know about it. I need your permission to pass along information to callers on the PFLAG phone line. I don’t always know these callers or how to check to see if they are what they say they are. It could be someone from the AFA or another hate organization. It could be someone really in great need. I need the names and phone numbers of a few gay general health practitioners and mental health workers. I only know of one person who I would recommend for mental health discomforts and one that I would say stay away from. Oops! I almost forgot there is another woman that I would recommend to transgenders. These are females, and some guys or families might want to speak to another man. Personally, I would like to know the names of a few lesbian doctors of any discipline. I have had it with the silent tolerance. I want someone I can speak openly with and get answers that make sense. Let’s face the fact that there are some things a straight person just does not understand about us. This list isn’t just for doctors and attorneys; I want to be able to help with a variety of requests. I’d like the names of gay businesses that do good and reliable work: house cleaners, painters, roofers, plumbers, social workers, personal shoppers – if you have a service, some PFLAG friend has a need. With your help, PFLAG can have a great list of professionals and businesses on the Northshore, Southshore and Westbank, and even Baton Rouge and Lafayette. Secret Friend?

have received a lovely bunch of flowers with a card encouraging me to stay positive concerning my surgery scheduled for the day this issue comes out – 4/22. I have told friends so I might as well go totally public – this is like coming out again. Back surgery is my next bit of excitement. I had to cancel my trip to China in May so I could get more titanium screwed into my body in April. Doesn’t sound fair or fun to me. Anyway – the sender did not sign the card nor was there a name of the florist. My first thought was sweet Paul Killgore who is always so thoughtful but I know his florist. Next I thought of thoughtful Randy Trahan who likes to do sweet things but I also know his florist. So if it wasn’t them, WHO THE HELL IS IT? Aren’t I nuts enough? Well, whoever you are – THANK YOU, Secret Friend. The flowers are lovely and appreciated. I have a great attitude, promise to be a good patient and will be back on my feet before the flowers have completely wilted.

A.J. – Our Friend

t is always sad to hear of a friend passing away, and I learned about one from Guy and Richard when they came by to visit with me last Sunday afternoon. They mentioned A.J. but didn’t know his last name, so I went to the obituary section of the local paper to see if I could find out for sure. It was my friend – our friend - and the obit appeared on a day that I never got around to reading the paper. The last time I saw A.J. was while I was out shopping. He told me about his heart problem but seemed to be doing nicely at the time. We talked for a while and said we would get together soon. The last time I took a picture of A.J. was at Hound Dogs with his buddy Gene. He didn’t get out that often, but this was one of those days when I was surprised to see him enter the bar. A.J. always wore that black hat, and I seldom saw him when he didn’t have it on. Even when attending the local bal masques, that black hat was a part of his classy look of the evening. It went well with the tuxedo, and I even adopted that idea when attending the Lords of Leather balls. Not only did he have a classy look, but he was just a very nice and caring human being. I guess one of my favorite times with A.J. was when he invited me to a special dinner at his place. It was really unusually special and came as a complete surprise too. His lover met me at the door nude, and this was the introduction to one of the most amazing meals I have ever had. There was another couple there at the time, and I was in constant shock at their actions. I’m a fairly private individual, and seeing what I saw those two characters doing was a little new to me – well, in the living room anyway. A.J. apologized for not warning me, but he also said he wasn’t expecting them to go that far either. I’m comfortable being nude, but somehow I didn’t feel that comfortable on that particular night although A.J. and lover Glenn did make me feel somewhat more at ease. Besides, they both had nice weenies. I found a time to make my exit, and A.J. and his lover followed me into the bedroom where I got back into my clothes. I think they thought I was offended, but that wasn’t the case at all. I really had a nice time, but I think it would have been better with just three guys instead of five on hand for the dinner. I could certainly have ordered a follow-up dessert after the real dessert was served. I’m sorry the followup invitation never arrived. I guess I’ll have to wait for another of Jacque’s invitations. He throws a few good ones every now and then. I’ll always remember A.J., and I’m sorry I had to learn about his death two weeks after it happened. He was just one of those very nice guys, soft spoken, very gentle in his actions, and always friendly. He seldom ever met a stranger, and I can almost hear his laughter. It was soft, like his voice, but that smile was so nice to

see. I’ll miss this friend. He was just one of those wonderful individuals who made you happy to be around him. I liked him, and I’ll miss him.

History

hen Guy and Richard came by for the visit, I took notes and wrote a history of George’s Place to put on their website. I knew a lot about this bar because I’ve been going there for many years, and I also knew George Hogan, who opened this one in 1970. It’s had a makeover recently, and I really like what has happened to the building. With the help of a local artist, George’s now stands out as a nice addition to the neighborhood. With the faux murals, it grabs your attention. On one corner, you have the historic Pastime Lounge, a meeting place for LSU students and alumni over the years, and across the street, you have the oldest gay bar in the city. I guess I would have to say that George’s has always been one of those places that just beckons you to enter. It’s a nice retreat for gays and over the years it has grown and continues to grow under manager Chansley Dykes, and her assistant manager, Luther Sobers. Richard is the greeter now. His bartender days are long past, but I can assure you that it was Richard who drew me to this bar all those years ago. It was long before I discovered the Mirror Lounge, although I had stopped in for a beer there too. (And that’s a story for another day.) Back when Interstate 10 was partially completed, the traffic was much worse than it is today. You had to get off at Gonzales and make your way to Airline Highway so you could get back on and finish your trek to New Orleans. I never did figure out what took so long for that little stretch of highway unless it was to build those rest areas, which are now a part of history too. I did not like that stretch of highway through the edge of Gonzales and always hated the stop and go traffic, so I would stop by George’s and let most of the traffic get out of the way before continuing my journey home. (I worked in Baton Rouge, but I commuted to Harahan, where I had a home, and to the French Quarter, where I had an apartment, my place of solitude to do my writing.) I got to know George and enjoyed his presence at the bar. He was always seated in the same spot, and I also made lots of friends that I still am in contact with today. There were other bartenders besides Richard, but their names are forgotten. I guess they weren’t that impressive in my memory, but I never had the chance to chat with them as much as Richard. Besides he was cute and sexy and had a pretty weenie. Oops! Did I say that? I know that many of you are dreading taking exams, but when you hear about all the changes that are going to take place over the next few weeks, I know it will help ease your burdened minds.

he Sound Factory and its Back Side are kicking things into high gear in anticipation of the Summer Break. Beginning May 1, they will be adding some new additions to their already fabulous weekly lineup, and I think you’ll be pleased to find that the new improvements will only add to the already festive Downtown nightlife. Starting in May, Mondays will be a celebration of Monday Madness with Happy Hour drink prices all night long. And for those of you who have become accustomed to the weekly Pool Tournament on Back Side, don’t worry about a thing. Your favorite competition will not change. Tuesdays are Karaoke Night at Sound Factory, hosted by the ever popular Chad Evans. Whether you enjoy being on stage or simply watching those that do, you’re sure to have an awesome night; Chad will make sure of that. Wednesdays are now Wild Wednesdays at Sound Factory, with a special themed party every other week. To kick off the celebration, on May 7, Sound Factory will have a Luau Party. So get there early. You don’t want to miss the first Wild Wednesday Celebration of the season. Thursdays are Thirsty Thursday, and while I’m not supposed to go into specifto bring a nice gay bar to old Red Stick. George Hogan made a good decision for Red Stick, and Richard has carried on a tradition of making this the “in place” to be in Baton Rouge. It truly is “the place with the personal touch.”

Englishmen

never thought too much about Englishmen being sexy until I saw a movie many years ago with Richard Todd, who wore a kilt in the movie. In fact, he was probably from Scotland, but it was a good movie with a religious theme, and I was really attracted to him. With later actors like Sean Connery or even Russell Crowe and Heath Ledger from Down Under, I find English and Aussie guys extremely sexy. Maybe it’s because of their accents. That brings me back to a young one that I met recently and who is definitely a sexy Englishman. We’ve talked, and he is really nice and friendly, but I never realized how well built he was until last week. I knew he was good looking and wore revealing clothes while walking or jogging that showed off his body, but then he came over for a chat with that tight shirt on, and I almost lost it right there. My goodness! Those nipples were definitely all perky, and that was when I realized that even

ell, I’m going to be lonesome for a week or so. My new neighbors, Robert and Brandon, are heading out to North Carolina, and I’ll definitely miss them. There is always something going on over there. I saw Robert out yesterday taking pictures of the house from the street. The front is about as close to being completed as you can get, and it really looks great. Now if the guy across the street would take lessons, he might get his monstrosity completed instead of irritating the neighbors and one property owner in particular. I’m just waiting now to see that swimming pool installed. I have visions of it being like University Doc’s home. The fence will do wonders for this part of Spanish Town too. It will definitely offer the guys the privacy they so desperately need. They can’t get outside to work now without pry[continued on Expose-7]

When an artist is painting a masterpiece, he certainly doesn’t want any interruptions. Privacy is coming, however, and I’m sure they can hardly wait. And speaking of University Doc, did I tell you about the photo shoot for Hooters? I have no idea what else he has done recently. I haven’t run into him lately, but I suppose I could just go over and request an entry for coffee and chit-chat. After all, he is a charmer with a great positive attitude on life. He is in the same boat, so to speak, when it comes to nosey people. At least Robert and Brandon don’t have it coming from above, but he does. I’m sure he will correct the situation soon. I saw that “elevated lady” bending over her flower bed recently, and I had to turn my head. Beauty may be skin deep in some cases, but butt ugly is something else – and that’s all I witnessed. It was too much for my delicate senses. I stopped by Hound Dogs yesterday to see one of my favorite people, Miss Jeanie. She has her regular position at the bar, and I had a beer and tried to talk with her, but there was someone else sitting next to her, and we couldn’t talk. Besides, I don’t like to stand up, and I couldn’t even lean on the counter. Maybe I’ll go back today and see if we can really get down to business. I did note all the fancy display of canopies inside and asked what in the world was going on. I thought they were about to announce some beach-type party. Well, I was shocked when I found out it was a party for someone who completely forgot to invite me to her party. I was shocked because I didn’t get to express my “joy” at this “joyful occasion.” I guess I’ll have to forgive her for this dastardly oversight, but I could certainly have used a little “joy” like that. That’s all right, especially since I have Jeanie to “enjoy.” Michael is also in a state of joy, but this is a different type. He apparently will not have to make that long trek to New England to bring back antiques this year. That is going to free him up to do things locally. Like me, he enjoys having sex with his plants. We pollinate constantly, and our babies are really growing in size and numbers. It is a joy to have sex in this way and to create new life forms. Kevin is busy again. With all the work going on at the State Capitol, this entrepreneur keeps his customers happy with information on what is going on with all the sessions, committee meetings, etc. Even though his work is limited to legislative sessions, he makes up for all those days when things aren’t in session. We hardly have time for dining together, but as soon as the session ends, we plan to hit the road to points west. Baton Rouge is really coming into its own lately. We actually have nudity in stage plays. I knew this was going on with small theater groups, but a new production of Hair began this week at LSU, and those body parts are going to be flopping around according to all the news releases. I think Sam and I will take in one of the performances, and if we approve, I’m sure we can make it a second time. I also have tickets for The Goat or Who is Sylvia? which is a little controversial too. Without the Saenger in New Orleans, I am trying to

fill the gap with local plays. I haven’t been able to meet with Cory over at Splash. I wanted to tell you about that new system they’ve added. David scared me silly when he demonstrated the equipment, and I’m not talking about his personal equipment either, sweeties. These pressure units come on periodically and the dance floor is covered with a smoky mist, but the sound when the bar is silent is a little scary, especially if you aren’t expecting it. Go by and check this out. This is just another of the excellent changes being made at Splash. I also need to find out how Las Vegas was doing. I believe they made a trip out there recently, and hopefully they catch me up on all things Buddy and Sammy, and maybe Hair too. Calendar boy Jim and his lover are also out there as is my all time favorite house guest (and it works both ways). I speak of the gorgeous new home owner,

Tommy Fontenot. I am so happy for this guy. They just don’t get any better than him. I need my Tommy fix again - and soon. Well, I’m running out of news, so I suppose I’ll have to sign off for a while. Be safe. Keep a condom handy, and be sure to wrap that rascal. It’s the only way to fly now.

Hair Comes to LSU

air: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical has arrived at LSU and will be performed at the Swine Palace in association with the LSU Theatre through May 4. This hippie, rock, musical changed Broadway forever, and now, it is in Baton Rouge on its 40th anniversary. This play is a product of the hippie counter-culture and sexual revolution of the 1960s, and several of its songs became anthems of the anti-Vietnam War peace movement.

One LSU student sitting next to me wanted me to explain what the play was all about. This was at intermission, so for the younger generation, a brief description in the program would have probably been a good thing to help students understand the period of time that only the older people in the audience understood. At the time, the musical’s depiction of the use of illegal drugs, sexuality, profanity, its irreverence for the American flag, and its nude scene caused much comment and controversy. It broke new ground in musical theater, and it has done the same for theater at LSU. It was a memory awakening for me. With the “Age of Aquarius,” “Good Morning Sunshine,” and “Hair,” I was taken back to a period of time that a lot of people would like to forget. against conscription to the Vietnam War and living a bohemian life together in New York City. They struggle to balance their young lives, loves, and the sexual revolution with their pacifist rebellion against the war and the conservative impulses of their parents and society. The cast selection was excellent, and all these young people had great voices. Along with three equity players and all the Tribe, they brought the period back to life. Perhaps the best talent in this group is Garrett Bruce, who turned in a bigger than life performance as Claude.
