Training and consultancy

Introduction Ambitious about Autism is the national charity for children and young people with autism. We provide services, raise awareness and understanding, and campaign for change. Through TreeHouse School and Ambitious College we offer specialist education and support.

We want to share our knowledge, expertise and experience to make sure all children and young people with autism have the opportunity to learn, thrive and achieve.

Training

We offer a wide range of training and development for school and college staff, as well as parents and carers of children and young people with autism.

Our training is delivered by outstanding teachers and practitioners who specialise in autism education.

Through our courses, we want you to gain practical knowledge, skills and techniques that can be used in a variety of settings and are relevant to young people with a range of needs.

Consultancy

We offer high quality bespoke training and consultancy and will work with you to design courses and support to suit your needs.

Our experience covers a wide range of different services and settings including:

• supporting local authorities with the strategic planning of their autism services

• developing training for secure residential and support services for people with autism and learning disabilities

• bespoke training for volunteer services

supporting children with autism at school

• working with European colleagues to support schools’ professional training

• autism awareness training for employers

We deliver Autism Education Trust courses. These are for anyone who works in education and other professionals who have contact with young people.

With support from the Department for Education, the Autism Education Trust has developed a training programme, competency framework, and a set of national standards to support practitioners in schools and further education to improve autism education practice. We are a designated AET training hub for London and provide face-to-face training for staff and practitioners.

Level 1 – An autism awareness session for those who would benefit from a better understanding of autism; including lunchtime supervisors, governors, administration, teaching and support staff as well as other professionals who have contact with school age pupils.

Autism Education Trust

Level 2 – For staff who work regularly with pupils with autism and want to learn more about autism, improve practice or go on to Level 3. All delegates receive a certificate of attendance and possible further AET certification with the completion of an online portfolio.

21 Sept 2015 and 12 Feb 2016

9.30am - 3.30pm £95* Level 3 – For staff who need further knowledge about autism and/or who will train or lead other staff in their setting. This in depth course goes into the psychological theories of autism and evaluation of practice. All delegates receive a certificate of attendance with possible further AET certification with the completion of an online portfolio.

Post–16 training

We arrange a date and time with you and deliver this training at your organisation. Please contact training@ambitiousaboutautism. org.uk for further information.

Tier 1 – A 90-minute autism awareness training course for everyone involved in a post-16 setting who would benefit from an understanding of autism. This includes teaching, support and office staff, caterers, caretakers, transport staff, governors, employers and careers advisers.

Tier 2 – A two-day course for all staff working directly with young people with autism who are looking for practical approaches to developing teaching, learning and support strategies.

Tier 3 – A one-day course for all staff who may take a leadership role that includes responsibility for developing provision for young people with autism within a post-16 setting. This could include lead practitioners for autism, inclusion and/or curriculum managers and those who manage additional learning support.

Ambitious about Autism The courses below are for parents, carers and education professionals and are run by Ambitious about Autism at The Pears National Centre for Autism Education, Woodside Avenue, London.

Introduction to autism and Applied Behaviour Analysis This two-day course provides an overview of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and its relevance to autism education. You will improve your understanding of autism, how behaviours are learned, and see how ABA works in practice.

Supporting young people with autism to develop skills for adulthood Independence, work and leisure skills are vital for young people with autism as they transition to adulthood. Through theoretical and practical exercises, this one-day course will give you an understanding in three areas; the barriers that young people face, the importance of developing independence and of evidence based interventions for teaching independence and leisure skills.

Positive Behaviour Support This course will introduce you to Positive Behaviour Support (PBS).

This is a framework for developing an understanding of behaviour that challenges, from which effective support can be put in place. You will gain an understanding of what makes a behaviour challenging and of PBS and have the opportunity to discuss and engage with case studies of individuals that have benefitted from this approach.

Teaching social skills to children and young people with autism This one-day course uses practical evidence-based strategies to teach social skills in a school or home setting.

It provides an understanding of the barriers and obstacles that may prevent children and young people with autism from understanding and using social skills.

Family support seminars When supporting a young person with autism or other disabilities, it can be difficult to know which way to turn.

We host family support seminars presented by recognised experts in the fields of disability law and education.

These will help you get the information you need to support your child.

Our seminars include lunch and a chance to meet with other carers in a friendly and supportive environment.

Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) Do the new EHCPs offer an opportunity to improve outcomes for your child or young person? Who is entitled to an EHCP and what content should be in a plan? Come and hear lawyers and education specialists answer these questions and more.

The Care Act 2014 and rights to support The law concerning how adults with disabilities are cared for, and the rights of carers, has changed. What does this mean for a young person planning for adult life, and for you as a carer?

These seminars cover the statutory and social care information you need to support young people as they move to adulthood.

Transition to adult life – Part 1 This seminar covers social services and health care funding, further education, and the Mental Capacity Act and decision-making.
