EDITOR’S NOTE

A lot of fashion discoveries of the second half of the century were inspired by breaking gender stereotypes.

In the 20s and 30s ladies were wearing wide-legged trousers and short boyish haircuts. In the 60s they put on tuxedos; and in the 70s started wearing ties and cravats with white men-style shirts.

It was the 70s that became a turning point in the histoEDITOR`S NOTE

ry of androgyny. The new wave of young glam rock musicians has turned everyone’s idea of men’s fashion upside down. Most prominent was David Bowie as his cult character of Ziggy Stardust, a genderless alien wearing crazy makeup and killer heels. After Ziggy Stardust, more and more young men, despite the conservatives’ best efforts, embraced the new fashion and started wearing flared trousers, glittery bodysuits and platformed boots. Glam rock’s theatricality and artifice allowed people to choose various roles, becoming the predecessor of modern fashion’s free thinking.

It helped the masses realize that gender – as opposed to sex – is a social construction rather than biological and it is changeable. Any visual femininity or masculinity is nothing more than just a dress-up game.

er, make up – more aggressive and women wearing suits had become a new norm.

The idea of masculinity was changing mostly because of feminism ideas, diversity and power dressing that, however, were not perceived as exclusively female priorities.

The 90s marked the era of unisex. The way people dressed in the 90s was not even a style as such – it was a new approach to fashion and choosing their own outfits. ality, his or her inner world and their own style had become very important.
