n recent years David was invited to be interviewed on BBC’s Working Lunch and the fitters took part in DIY SOS. T Nutt & Sons also featured in the Carpet Foundation’s national advertising campaign. As a result of all these prestigious accolades, customers can remain assured that the impeccable standing of the ‘Nutt’ family name will long continue. Directors David and Keven Nutt along with cousin Patrick strive to ensure the hardearned reputation of the business is always maintained. Making up the team is manager, Andrew Gregory, who started as a Saturday boy 30 years or so ago when he was just 13. Andrew has learned the business from the ground up – initially sweeping the warehouse floor through the various stages of development to his prominent position there today. All the fitters are employed by T Nutt & Sons, with many of them giving loyal service for over twenty years. As members and major shareholders in the Greendale Carpets and Flooring Group, T Nutt & Sons can offer its customers the widest range of collection of carpets, vinyl, wood, Karndean and laminate flooring – all at the very best competitive prices.

Nutt & Sons to this very day. Keven says, “Keeping it in the family gives us absolute control over quality and service. If there’s a problem, a contractor will blame a retailer, or a builder will complain about a contractor. The customer doesn’t know who to turn to in order to resolve a complaint. It’s much better for customers to deal with us, as they can usually speak to one of the family direct.” T Nutt & Sons’ premises are welcoming and welllit, with a comprehensive range of neatly-displayed stock. The company has on display carpets and floorcoverings from all the leading manufacturers, and good presentation is clearly an all-important factor contributing to the company’s professionalism. From springtime there are attractive hanging baskets of flowers displayed on the well-maintained shop-front, and the company’s identity appears on clear van signage and there’s a smart uniform for all staff.
From its early days in 1962 to the present membership, the Greendale Carpets and Flooring Group has progressed from what was an exclusive ‘club’ to a nationwide association of over 150 independent retail carpet and flooring specialists. With a purchasing power just as great or greater than that of the multiples, Greendale offers customers the best of both worlds: access to an unparalleled pricing structure and the excellent service offered by independent retailers.
With hundreds of letters from satisfied customers on display, the foundation of T Nutt & Sons’ business is based on glowing reports and personal recommendations.
David, Keven, Patrick and Andrew are still working at T

David concludes, “We always aim to be the best. Despite stocking the highest-quality carpets, laminates, real wood flooring and Karndean from all the leading manufacturers we are competitively priced in comparison with other retail outlets. We use quality underlay all the time. Our service is better than advertising. You’ve got to be involved with the customers. We visit them to explain in detail where any seams are going to be and encourage them to take out samples. We not only get repeat business from existing customers, but we also get a lot of business from their friends as well. Generation after generation of the same family keep coming back to us time after time.”

Book Review
The Other End of the Line by Andrea Camilleri
If you’ve seen any of the Inspector Montalbano series on TV you’ll be familiar with the grumpy Sicilian detective and the wit and brio (and food!) of his world. But you may not know that Montalbano’s creator was Andrea Camilleri whose two dozen plus novels have sold 30 million copies worldwide and have been translated into 32 languages. The latest, The Other End of the Line, has just been published, two months after his death at the age of 93. As with all Camilleri’s books the “case” is only part of the story. Always his passion for life and social justice and the people and island of Sicily shines through. In this tale the detective tries to unravel the murder of the dressmaker at the local tailor. She is a woman he found himself charmed by when, to his dismay, he had been sent by his girlfriend to get a “proper” suit for a wedding.
Ashmere Derbyshire Local Care Home Group recognised as an outstanding employer Ashmere Derbyshire is a group of seven homes, soon to be eight based in Derbyshire, specializing in residential, nursing and dementia care.
Our ethos is “caring for your family as if they were our family” With an array of activities happening throughout the day there is always some thing to keep you entertained Recognised by CQC as a good provider with the investors in people standard, skills for care endorsed training and the gold standards framework end of life award, Ashmere provides quality care for a range of needs.
Feel free to pop in and have a look around.
But at the same time, Montalbano’s coastal town of Vigata faces a swell of refugees arriving nightly by boat in search of a better life. The whole town is trying to help the migrants while exhausted police try to track down the people smugglers who are getting rich on other people’s misery. Camilleri describes the situation, almost on our doorstep, with humanity and lucidity. His fans will be pleased to know that is not quite the last book. At least one more is still to be published.

COMMUNITY FOCUS
T H E AU D L E Y C LU B AT ST E L P H I N ’ S PA R K
Recently we put a request out for people to send information and articles about their local community groups, charities and events, so we could feature them in a new section we have been hoping to introduce.
M E M B E R S H I P S AVA I L A B L E
We know how difficult it can be for small not-for-profit organisations to be able to afford space, even with the reduced community rates we offer, so we thought it would be great to give everyone the chance to get a whole page to themselves for FREE and enable them the opportunity to get the word out about their good work.
Facilities include: Swimming pool - Sauna - Gym Treatment rooms - Hair salon Tennis court - Restaurant & Bar/Bistro
Well, here we go. This is the first instalment of the new ‘Community Focus’ page… We are hoping to do at least once a month. I hope you are inspired to send in your own articles. And remember it’s completely free…

Baslow Flower Circle The Flower Circle hold their meetings in the village hall in Baslow on the third Tuesday monthly from March to November during the afternoons. The Circle was formed in 1973. Invited floral art demonstrators entertain members and visitors who can enjoy their artistry and skills as they present their chosen title for the afternoon. As the year progresses the demonstrations take on a seasonal flavour from Springtime through to Christmas.

During the year we hold a coffee morning to raise money for either a charity or for our own funds, and a Christmas Fair in November which also helps with the finances. The charities that we have supported in the past have all been local ones. Our members also support Flower Festivals and Local Shows during the year. We are members of NAFAS, which stands for National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies and is split into regional groups. We come under the North Midlands Area. There are social gatherings and a National Show annually to which all members are invited.

We’re All Europeans Really! Some 16,000 years ago Britain was still firmly a part of the European continent. A continuous landmass ran from the Shetland Isles in the north, travelling southeast and separated from Norway by a narrow channel, before taking in Denmark and finally joining up to what is now the west coast of Sweden. This huge landmass, where the North Sea now is, has been dubbed Doggerland and research has indicated that it was a lush territory, with good hunting grounds crossed by freshwater rivers. Ideal terrain in fact for a hunter gather society. Derbyshire is a landlocked county even now – imagine how far away from the sea you would have been 12,000 years ago! About 12,000 years ago, the melting glaciers of the ice age began to slowly submerge this land, but the landmass remained, at least in parts, until (in archaeological and geographical terms) relatively recently…8,000 years ago. It was this connection with the European continent that allowed early modern humans to travel into the heart of what is now Britain. Perhaps they were curious as to what lay further west (assuming they travelled from Doggerland or North if from what is now France/Spain) – but for whatever reason, by approximately 12,000 years ago we begin to see more traces of human occupation around Derbyshire. These early peoples used stone tools, utilised rock shelters and caves rather than build permanent lodgings and were hunter gatherers. They would spend the summers gathering what they could, slaughtering and butchering animals etc, before presumably hunkering down to see out the winter. We can have no real clue as to the methods they would use to preserve and store foodstuffs, but I personally tend to think that they were people just like us…

The hunter gatherer way of life continued in pretty much the same way until around 6000 years ago, when the last remaining land bridge with Europe was finally and permanently inundated by the rising sea, and it is around this time that we start to see a more settled, fixed way of living, the beginnings of agriculture and the construction of stone structures…cairns, standing stones and the like.
WINTER TYRES NOW BEING FITTED
Although I’d hoped to touch upon the multitude of such structures, many of which still remain visible in Derbyshire today, it is going to have to wait until the next article!

A typical Kip classroom has students who have very different needs and academic levels. However they all need these three things to succeed.
Pace… taking regular steps at a speed they can cope with to achieve their goals Differentiation…changing and varied tasks to keep them motivated and interested Challenge… a learning style that keeps them challenged and successful, even if they get something wrong! A typical session at Kip will contain up to five students, all working individually. Here is one such session containing three very different students. These are their stories… James aged 6, enjoyed school but was finding it difficult to ‘get going’. He had good social skills; was enthusiastic to learn and very willing, but reading and writing were just not clicking for him. His initial assessment showed he had basic letter recognition in place but he hadn’t begun to identify blended sounds (sounds made up of more than one letter) and this was holding back his reading. His actual reading age was too low to be assessed accurately. Lucy aged 11 had a number of goals. She was keen to try for a scholarship for a boarding school and needed to pass both a tough entrance exam and achieve good scores in her year 6 SATs. Once again, an individual plan was put together based on her initial assessment. This took into account the needs of the school entrance exam and the SATs syllabus.
Amy aged 9 had a number of physical and learning difficulties, found concentration tricky and found it hard to know quite how to behave socially within a group. Amy’s initial plan needed to address all her needs and focussed on both academic and social skills. So what happened? Well as you can imagine in a normal classroom environment these very different students would have had no interaction at all and yet in the Kip classroom, away from their natural peer groups, these three students bonded and supported each other, cheering each other on when one of them achieved a milestone, encouraging each other and laughing at common jokes from their tutor. Each of them moved on socially and experienced a very important lesson in life… people may be different from you but it doesn’t mean you can’t like and accept them. Each student achieved individually but as a group socially they achieved so much more ‘humanity’ towards each other. The results… James’ reading age showed an improvement of 2 years! Lucy achieved the school entrance exam and the scholarship is under her belt. Amy improved her reading age by 18 months and her spelling by a year. Being in the small group helped her social skills really begin to take off. Let your child experience the Kip effect by calling Jo on 01629 56611 or 01246 220224 for a free assessment.

Every member of the team of 8 has joined in and the cheery display of flowers can be spotted around the surgery for everyone to enjoy. The sunflowers were measured when the first flower opened and though the lead has changed over the last month the winner of the competition is Surgery Manager Janet Andrews whose plant measured 2.02m.
‘The sunflower competition has certainly got everyone talking and raised the competitive spirit of all the staff here in Winster. Over the past few months since we started growing the flowers we have swapped lots of tips, including watering techniques and the use of horse manure to get the best results. It has been a fun competition but has also raised some vital funds for an important charity which has helped some of our patients and their families.’

Hope Valley Business Zoo Business Networking @HNBZ Networking
Do’s and Don’ts
Business owners may avoid networking for several reasons. Rigid, ‘must always bring referrals and never miss a session’ kind of events seem like hard work.
Do spend some time working on ‘your pitch’, usually 30-60 seconds is required.
Large yearly membership fees plus additional weekly meeting payments quickly add up and, if you’re just starting, out these can seem like just another unjustifiable expense. However, networking has changed yes, the ‘old style’ membership ones still exist but there are plenty of pay as you attend groups around and everyone who runs their own business should factor in attending meetings on a regular basis.
Stunning Garden Rooms see website for details
Do ensure that you mention exactly what you are looking for – e.g. the type of business or client you would like to meet. Do attend meetings regularly, dipping in and out won’t help you build relationships. Do refer business to people you network with – reciprocity is the name of the game! Do follow up with people – networking is not just about handing out business cards. Don’t launch straight into a sales pitch. Don’t expect results (i.e. sales) immediately, it could take several months Don’t speak to only one person or group – ensure you talk to as many other attendees as possible. Don’t GIVE UP

Gardener’s Calendar
Most gardeners will, despite the fact that there’s still plenty growing, be thinking about spring. So wallflowers violas and winter pansies can go now into the ground along with bulbs. Remember daffs, crocus and narcissus can be planted now but tulips left until well into November to avoid tulip fire. A handy rule of thumb for most bulbs is to plant pretty deep - two to three times their height. Lilies can also be planted in containers now for next summer though it’s probably best to keep the pots in a cool frost-free place rather than outside if you anticipate frozen ground in your garden this winter.
r
If you have heucheras and they’re starting to look a bit sad it’s a good time to lift and divide, get rid of any rot or decay and replant in small clumps. Perennials such as crocosmia or peonies which produce leaves and flower stems from underground, can be cut back to soil level. But leave stems around penstemons to protect the crown when they start growing again.

There’s so many leaves dropping just now, it hardly seems worth the bother of raking them. However there are two good reasons to do this – if left to lie on grass they will get sludgy and damage your lawn, but also leaf mould is great mulch. Usually it can take up to a couple of years to get good leaf mould but you can speed things up by collecting and mowing before bagging. Broken down leaves decay much faster.

TOP TIP!
If you’ve been growing peas or beans this year the temptation is always to heave them out once they’ve finished producing. Just cut back to ground level instead – the roots are a great source of nitrogen which is great for renewing the soil. 06/11/2018 18:16

Looking out for the Peak’s snakes..…..
Often overlooked across much of lowland parts of the Peak a silent reptile goes quietly about its business of hunting frogs. One of our only two ‘true snakes’, the Grass Snake (Natrix natrix), is a denizen of watery and wet places such as marshes, fens, streamsides and wet woodlands. A large female can be up to five feet long, and unlike the viviparous Adder which holds its eggs internally and so gives birth to live young, the Grass Snake lays eggs. In doing this, it comes to people’s attention as it seeks out warm sites like garden compost-heaps into which the eggs are placed. Heat from decomposition helps young snakes grow inside their shells until they are ready to burst out into the world. Although the Grass Snake is potentially quite big, it is of course non-venomous; the Adder (Vipera berus) being our only native poisonous reptile. In areas where wetlands survive, Grass Snakes are not uncommon but to see them you must walk quietly and close to watery habitats such as Cromford Canal for example. Grass snakes also occur in damp open woodland glades. They hunt in shallow water moving swiftly, sinuously, smoothly over and in the water showing off glorious green, yellow and gold markings. They weave in and out of the grassy vegetation in search of frogs and froglets, or perhaps a vole or two for lunch. Strong swimmers they will also take toads and small fish. In the meantime, look out for them along well-vegetated rivers and canals, and around lakes, ponds and marshes.
ROADSWEEPING
ESTABLISHED OVER 25 YEARS Our Services include:
especially on warm days in spring when they have come out of hibernation. Sometimes if they have been disturbed, and so rudely awakened from their sunbathing slumbers, they will ‘hiss’ loudly. Favouring open areas along a footpath edge or even in the middle of a path they will soon slink back into the cover of leggy heather until potential danger has passed. On Big Moor I had good views of first a female close by the path edge and then a male (as shown in the picture). Mostly you don’t need to worry too much about Adders but just be sensible. Whilst the Adder or Viper is poisonous, the animal is generally harmless. They make a fair bit of noise if disturbed but that is to let you know they are there and so to avoid them. However, they are venomous, and although they rarely bite people, you need to take care if walking a dog. Keep a careful watch on your dog since an inquisitive pet thrusting its nose in is more like to get a nip and that can be bad. Let me know if you’ve seen any snakes locally.
However, up on the moors, walkers will frequently spot Adders,
