SPOTLIGHT ON FEET
Toenail Reconstruction It's that time of year that we start to see temperatures drop and supermarket shelves swap suncream for selection boxes. Whether you're well into your Christmas prep or wondering where Summer went, you can't deny Christmas party and winter sun getaway season is coming and that's why our friends at the Voice have asked us to write this spotlight on toenail reconstruction! We're Lyndsey and Dave from Your Feet First, in Kirkby. We treat feet! Whether it's corns, callus or fungal nail, we've seen it all and we can help! So what is a Pedisafe toenail reconstruction? Before A toenail reconstruction can improve the appearance of damaged or removed nails.
Pedisafe is a specialist product from Canada, which contains anti-fungal and After antimicrobial agents. While we use it mostly for reconstructions, we also use it to help us manage ingrown nails and to realign crooked or involuted nails. It's specifically designed for use on toenails, so doesn't risk the health of your nail like Acrylics or plastic tips.

Foot Health Clinic Why have a reconstruction?
Most clients have reconstructions because they don't like the way that their nails look. Sometimes, reconstructions are used temporarily, while we treat an underlying issue, like fungal nail.

Other times, people want us to reconstruct a nail that is permanently missing, for example, when nails have been partially or fully removed or damaged due to their lifestyle, such as athletes. How long does a reconstruction last?
They should be removed within 6-8 weeks, although this varies, depending on the nail and lifestyle of the client. What is the process? Any dead or damaged nail is removed. We then build the reconstruction freehand (no forms or tips!) in layers. , They can be finished naturally or with a gel polish, if you'd rather. The whole process is completely Before painless! Hi I’m Donna your Personal Travel Counsellor. Welcome to my monthly travel page… I’ll be using this space to offer advice, tips, personal experience and inspiration for your travels. This month I thought that I would tell you about a recent trip I took to Israel. It’s not a destination that many consider a ‘holiday’ place but having seen the advert on TV yet still there seemed to be a reluctance by many to try it, I jumped at the opportunity to check it out for myself. Often people assume that it’s not safe to travel to Israel, but I felt perfectly safe the entire trip and the Foreign Office don’t advise against travel. I flew direct from Manchester into Tel Aviv, but there are also direct flights from London airports as well. I flew El Al and found the flight to be very comfortable and at only 4.5 hours it was no further than flying to anywhere else in Europe. I arrived to 31c temperatures in early September so great weather too! A 40-minute journey took us to Herzilya, a suburb of Tel Aviv where I checked into the Dan Accadia Hotel. The hotel sat on a beautiful white sand beach with views towards the Tel Aviv skyline. It was a 5-10 minute walk to a marina with bars and restaurants as well as a mall with lots of shops to explore. It’s not necessarily the cheapest place to visit, prices for eating and drinking out I found to be similar to the UK but wherever we ate the food was exceptional, a lot of Mediterranean influence but with a Middle Eastern twist. Lots of salads, pickles, fresh meats, breads and sweet treats. Our next stay was at the Dan Caesarea Hotel, a recently renovated resort style hotel set in 15 acres of gardens with a great pool as it’s centrepiece. We took a night excursion to Dor Beach where we walked along the shoreline by lantern light looking for sea life in the many rock pools before ascending to the top of the headland where we heard stories of the local area which made this one not to miss. The next morning was my favourite excursion of the trip, we visited the ancient port of Caesarea, built by King Herrod to entice Roman traders to Israel’s shores. The history of this place is fascinating. You can explore the ruins, take a guided tour or just enjoy a coffee by the sea. Our final stay of the trip was Dan Tel Aviv, situated across from Frischman Beach and the lovely promenade that runs the whole length of the Tel Aviv beachfront from the Old Port to Jaffa. On our final night we went along the beach to an area where local people meet on a Saturday night to enjoy dancing and music. It was a wonderful experience and a great end to my stay.
ALL our recliners are made to measure to suit your individual need, then made to order within 2 - 6 weeks.
Visit our shop to get a free fitting and try yourself.

9th – 15th October is Baby Loss Awareness Week
19/10/2017 13:12
As many people know, the death of a baby is not a rare event and can affect many people. Baby Loss Awareness Week aims to act as a point of remembrance for bereaved parents, families and friends to unite across the world to commemorate their babies’ lives. At the same time, it is an opportunity to raise awareness about pregnancy and baby loss in the UK and to drive improvements in bereavement care and support for those affected. Baby Loss Awareness Week is also a collaboration of charities and organisations working together. One of these organisations is Nottingham Sands, a branch of the national Sands charity.
Nottingham Sands are a group of bereaved parents who volunteer their time. They have links to Kings Mill plus City and QMC hospital and work closely with the bereavement midwives to support those who have suffered the loss of a baby at any stage. Nottingham Sands have launched the ‘I’m the Face of Baby Loss’ campaign. This innovative approach involves bereaved families having photos produced and displayed to help break the taboo surrounding the devastating loss of a baby. These will be exhibited across the county from 9th to 15th October for Baby Loss Awareness Week. More information about Nottinghamshire Sands can be found on their Facebook page “Nottinghamshire Sands” or via email at nottingham.sands@hotmail.co.uk
For more information about Baby Loss Awareness Week visit babyloss-awareness.org , where you can find out how you can get involved, from joining the global “Wave of Light”, candlelit vigil at 7pm on 15th October, by helping ‘break the silence’ and joining in the conversation on social media using #BLAW2019 or through wearing the pink and blue ribbon pin

Rambles with RafFa lake and
3-mile circular walk from Pinxton Wharf via Selston
A short but sweet walk from our resident ramble aficionado David of JH Legal. David has provided a little extra information in the description about two of the places we visit on this walk, Pinxton Wharf and St Helen’s Church. I think this local history really adds to the colour of the walk so a big thank you to David! We begin the walk at Pinxton Wharf. The Boat Inn is very close by and a good spot to stop in for some refreshment. It is dog friendly indoors and out. We walk along the canal for a short while before branching off across country towards Selston. We enter Selston briefly and walk past St Helen’s Church. Before heading back across country back towards Pinxton Wharf.
A gentle walk which should take you and your dog around 1½-2 hours to complete. There is a couple of quiet roads so please take care, however most of the walk is on paths and trails. Please wear appropriate footwear and, as always, follow the countryside code.
START: Pinxton Wharf, Alexander Terrace, Off Wharf Road, Pinxton. Notts. NG16 6PL 1. Enter the wharf through a squeeze gate on Alexander Terrace near the railway crossing and continue straight ahead along the footpath directly in front of you. (Pinxton Wharf was the terminus for the Cromford canal, which was built to link the collieries to the River Trent. Pinxton China works were also
20
in operation very close to the wharf.) After some distance cross over a small wooden footbridge and then a little further on pass over a larger wooden footbridge. Immediately after crossing the 2nd bridge turn right to continue along a footpath with a canal on your right. 2. Continue along the footpath passing ‘The Boat Inn’ on your left, until reaching a squeeze gate. Pass through the gate and then bear right. After a very short distance

pass through a gap adjacent to a large metal gate and continue straight ahead along a lane keeping the canal on your right. 3. Continue along the lane for some distance and the immediately after passing some sheds on your left, turn left to pass through a gap in a fence along a marked footpath. The path leads to a farm track. Continue along the track to continue up and over a bridge. Shortly after the bridge and just prior to reaching a large metal gate directly in front of you, turn left to walk along a farm track going uphill. 4. At the top of the hill keep ahead into a open field, passing a yellow marker post on your left. Continue straight ahead over the brow of the hill and down the other side aiming for a small single tree in the hedge row on the far side of the field. Cross over a tiny stream and pass through the hedge to continue straight ahead for a short distance across another field. 5. At the far side pass through a gap into another field and now continue with the hedge on your right. Upon reaching a large metal gate on your right, ignore a marked path straight ahead and bear left to continue along the edge of the same field keeping the hedge on your right. At the far side of the field continue straight ahead along a narrow path with a fence on your left until reaching a stile. Cross the stile and continue along the edge of another field with a hedge on your right. 6. At the far side of this field cross another stile and then continue uphill to a road. Turn left along the road and after a short distance pass the church on your left. (Take a look at St Helens Church which holds the grave of Gypsy King Dan Boswell.[walk to the left hand side of the church and it is a few feet
from the door by a small holly tree] The grave stone faces the wrong way-it is not the original stone which was supposedly broken in two after being kicked by a cow. This dates back to when cows were kept in the churchyard . St Helens Church also contains the only 12thC incised stone in England. This is sited by the Chancel and is really worth viewing.) After passing the church continue along the road for some distance until reaching No.123. Turn left along a marked footpath adjacent to No.123 going downhill. After a short distance cross straight over a lane, pass through a gap and continue straight ahead across a field with a hedge on your left. 7. Continue to the far side of the field, pass through a gap and continue through a kissing gate. Now continue with a hedge on your left. After some distance follow the path over to the right to meet up with a kissing gate at the far side of the field. Pass through the gate and cross over a tarmac lane onto a marked footpath. Pass a farm and then a wind turbine on your left to continue straight ahead going downhill with a hedge on your left. 8. At the bottom of the field keep ahead along a narrow footpath going downhill. At the bottom cross over a railway line and then continue for a short distance to pass through a squeeze gate. Immediately after, turn left pass through another squeeze gate to continue along a footpath. Continue until reaching a road and Pinxto n the start of your wharf walk.

Helping grandchildren achieve a debt free degree At this time of year when over 500,000 students are expected to and are applied to the beneficiary of that element of the policy. start university for the first time, now seems a good time to focus What does this actually mean? If we look at the figures based on on how older members of a family can help with the costs of the current tax year, there’s a personal allowance of £12,500 gaining a university education. which can be earned tax free here in the UK, and there’s also a If you’re a grandparent looking at ways to help the younger personal savings allowance of £1,000 and the starting rate for generation of your family then there are some options open to savings is £5,000. This means that during a year there’s a potential you. As with all financial planning it requires some forethought total of £18,500 which can be made available tax free. and plans can be made many years ahead to help future An income of £18,500 per year would be sufficient to pay for the grandchildren at this important time in their education. university fees, which in many instances are now at the top threshold of £9,250, as well as covering accommodation and living costs. Such a significant sum could make a huge difference to whether your grandchild continues with their education and it will reduce future Inheritance Tax liabilities too. The thought of accumulating debts of £50,000 or more could put many off going to university so why not talk to the team at Hampshire Hill to see how you might be able to help with this burden? Offshore bonds are a popular choice for this form of financial management. During the investment years there is no UK tax to pay on an interest or gains from the investment; tax is only attributed to the drawings on the policy at the appropriate time

Another first for Hampshire Hill! Kirkby-in-Ashfield firm, Hampshire Hill Group Limited, is delighted to have the first paraplanner to be accredited with The Paraplanner Standard, Reece Edwards as a member of their team. Richard Hampshire, Managing Director at Hampshire Hill Group said “It’s not often a small business like ours is able to have a team member being the first to achieve such an accreditation. We certainly feel it’s something to celebrate and I couldn’t be more thrilled on Reece’s achievement. It just proves that you don’t need to use a large London firm to benefit from the best people and knowledge; we have it all here in Kirkby.” Hampshire Hill Group Ltd 12 Diamond Avenue Kirkbyin-Ashfield Nottinghamshire NG17 7GR 01623 750000 info@hampshirehill.co.uk www.hampshirehill.co.uk

01623 459891 Sensing a gap in the political landscape Mike introduces the UCIP party… With a charismatic leader and the ‘wind of change’ behind them is he about to lead a common sense revolution? Let’s see…

Part 2 of ‘How we can make this a better No More Painting country’
No More Ladders Having announced the intention to form a new political party that speaks for and on behalf of the people, Fascias I’ve had support from the most unlikely of sources. Well, I had an email from a Mr Donald J Trump. He has Soffitsbut suggested that the party be called the Union of Clever & Intelligent People or UCIP for short. We like that, despite this Trump fella claiming to be a genius, I’m not sure he’d meet the membership criteria
Set out below is the second part of our manifesto. Like the first, this demonstrates just how in tune we are with the things that really matter. Problem No 6 – seriously overweight people travelling on aeroplanes taking up valuable space in the cabin and forcing us weedy individuals (the majority of passengers!) to endure an uncomfortable flight.Policy – retain them, but revert to calling them sleeping policemen. The problem will still be there but at least the change of name makes them sound a bit better. Policy – all passengers to be weighed at check in and those found to have a body mass index 20% greater than it should be, to have their luggage reduced by the equivalent weight as a means of counterbalancing. If they refuse to co-operate (or have no luggage) they travel in the hold. Policy – Give waiters, train managers and bus drivers the authorisation to immediately amputate the hand of any offender. NB – both hands for repeat offenders. Problem No 7 – The damage to the environment caused by non-recyclable coffee cups Policy – All Starbucks/Costa Coffee etc. customers to provide their own re-useable mug or beaker. Those who fail to comply with this reasonable request to have the boiling drink poured into their cupped hands. For a second offence the drink should go straight into their mouths. If they still fail to comply, the next drink is poured over their head.

Policy – We at UCIP recognise that individuals can do whatever they like with their bodies. We have no problem with, although fail to understand why, otherwise sensible men/women having a tasteful tattoo. That is their choice but ......c’mon, some are simply repulsive!

As a result, as part of the National Census carried out every ten years, the ‘head of the household’ to request that all those accountable to he/she take part in a parade. This will require them to remove all clothing to ensure a proper inspection. Any offensive tattoos discovered as part of this process to be reported in the Offensive Tattoo section of the Census form.
Ian Wilson
By the time of the next Census (2021), UCIP believe that many of the dog poo wardens created to deal with the issue we raised last month, will be looking for more work. After undergoing training they would take on the part time role of OTRO (Offensive Tattoo Removal Operative) and visit relevant households and ensure that this problem is permanently eliminated.

Right, and this will really test you, can you name the last eleven leaders of the British Liberal/Liberal Democratic Party? As ever, no prizes, but you can see how many you got right at the bottom of the page.

Most gardeners will, despite the fact that there’s still plenty growing, be thinking about spring. So wallflowers violas and winter pansies can go now into the ground along with bulbs. Remember daffs, crocus and narcissus can be planted now but tulips left until well into November to avoid tulip fire. A handy rule of thumb for most bulbs is to plant pretty deep - two to three times their height. Lilies can also be planted in containers now for next summer though it’s probably best to keep the pots in a cool frost-free place rather than outside if you anticipate frozen ground in your garden this winter.

If you have heucheras and they’re starting to look a bit sad it’s a good time to lift and divide, get rid of any rot or decay and replant in small clumps. Perennials such as crocosmia or peonies which produce leaves and flower stems from underground, can be cut back to soil level. But leave stems around penstemons to protect the crown when they start growing again. There’s so many leaves dropping just now, it hardly seems worth the bother of raking them. However there are two good reasons to do this – if left to lie on grass they will get sludgy and damage your lawn, but also leaf mould is great mulch. Usually it can take up to a couple of years to get good leaf mould but you can speed things up by collecting and mowing before bagging. Broken down leaves decay much faster.
TOP TIP!
If you’ve been growing peas or beans this year the temptation is always to heave them out once they’ve finished producing. Just cut back to ground level instead – the roots are a great source of nitrogen which is great for renewing the soil. 06/11/2018 18:16

COOPER’S CORNER This month Barry is banging on about cricket… wait, did I read that right? Cricket?! During the football season? Now I know the worlds gone mad. It must have been a good Summer for the sport then? Let’s see what Barry has to say. To regular readers of this column, you’ll note that football tends to be the subject of choice. However, after a memorable few months of England’s major summer sport, it feels only fitting that this month’s waffle should be dedicated to cricket. What a few months it has been for the England team, Eoin Morgan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and Stuart Broad et all. If you’re a cricket fan then it’s probably been one of the best in living memory, and if you’re not, there’s a fairly good chance that you’ve been captivated by the World Cup and then the Ashes. I know my good lady has become completely infatuated with it, as has one of my good friends – neither cared too much for cricket at the start of the summer – oh how they’re reformed characters now. Cricket’s a magnificent sport, one of the quintessential English games, played throughout the Commonwealth, with arguably its biggest rivalry being that between the two countries which contest the Ashes. And boy has it delivered. First up, it was that magnificent early July afternoon at Lord’s when Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer somehow led England to a first World Cup title in the One Day format of the game over New Zealand in the most dramatic of circumstances. That engaged a nation, it gave the whole country something to celebrate amid all the chaotic nonsense generated by those in Westminster and the whole Brexit shambles. Cricket is like no other sport, even football struggles to generate the pure, dramatic fluctuations - the games that operate within a game, how one wicket can change the course of an entire outcome. It’s unrivalled and I mean that with the greatest respects to others.
Unfortunately, like everything else, cricket is reliant on the finances delivered by satellite television and ticket sales, so while having an Ashes series just a couple of weeks after a home World Cup was far from ideal for the players, it was a necessity from the point of view of England and Wales’ Cricket Board’s bean counters. Once again, it delivered in spades. We can debate all day long the merits of the Ashes being played so close to a World Cup, but in truth, for England to come out of it unbeaten is a success in itself. I was at Headingley to see the team bowled out for 67 on that Friday afternoon, walking away into the sultry Leeds evening, believing the Test and Ashes were gone. The one man who didn’t was Ben Stokes and his heroic colleague, Jack Leach. Stokes’ innings to see England win that match was as good as it gets, it was memorable to say the least. Watching from Trent Bridge, who were playing Yorkshire in the Twenty20 competition, nobody amid the 16,000 cared what was happening out in the middle that day, we were all trying to follow the action from Leeds – the team had captivated a nation, again, just like in 2005. Yes, England may not have been able to win the little urn outright this summer and reclaim it from those pesky Aussies, but we’ve won a World Cup and drawn an Ashes series in the space of three months. That’s something to be proud of, those players are ones to herald, to be proud of and cricket has shown that we can all love it. What an absolute delight it’s been. Now, if we could just get more of it on terrestrial for the masses to see (and don’t get me started on the Hundred)...
