From the Editor Hi all, This is really hard to believe but it has been 9 years since the very first Swanwick edition hit the doorsteps of 2500 homes! I can remember it like yesterday and I cringe horribly when I look back on that first edition! I delivered them all myself and I remember putting them through letterboxes nervously and was praying that nobody would come out and shout at me and I truly hoped at least some people would like it (or at least appreciate what I was trying to do!!). Well, we’re still here, so I’d like to think that at least some of you did and I thank you endlessly for that and your continued support throughout the years. Without you reading it and supporting our fabulous advertisers, there would be no magazine, so thank you from the bottom of all our hearts. With that in mind, this month we have run our very first ‘pull out feature’ of the South Normanton shopping streets. We’ve really put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this and the support from the local community has been fantastic. We really hope to be doing more of these over the coming months/years (although we might leave a bit of a gap until the next one as this has nearly killed us!). We certainly hope you find it as interesting as we did pulling it all together and remember to support your local businesses…..if we don’t all use it, we will lose it! Finally, I’d like to mention Bonfire night and the time of year that involves the big fella dressed in red! I know it is super early but give a thought to us poor magazine producers who are still in the throes of summer (no kids are back at school yet) whilst simultaneously working on the October (Bonfire) and Christmas editions! We are regularly #confused in relation to what month it is!!! So, if you are planning any events or you want to start publicising events for the festive period……DON’T

Method:

Ingredients:

1. Put the beef in a deep non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes or until browned, breaking up any lumps with spoon. Drain off any fat and add the onion, garlic and 2 tbsp water. Cover and cook for 10 minutes or until the onion is soft, stirring occasionally.

• 500g lean beef mince (5% fat or less) • 1 large onion, finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 400g can chopped tomatoes • 400g jar sweet peppers (such as Peppadew), drained and roughly chopped • 3 x 300g packs butternut squash noodles (or see tip) • Chopped fresh parsley, to serve • 4 level tbsp freshly grated Parmesan, to serve

2. Add the chopped tomatoes and peppers to the pan, reduce the heat to low and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes. 3. When the sauce is nearly ready, put the squash noodles and 100ml boiling water in a non-stick saucepan over a medium-high heat and cook for 5 minutes or until piping hot and tender. Drain, divide between bowls and top with the sauce. Scatter over the parsley and serve with the Parmesan to sprinkle over (1 level tbsp per serving).

Strangely enough one of the most common things people say to us is that they didn’t know we were based in South Normanton. However, it’s something we are massively proud of and we will be doing our best to make sure you all know where we are, so you feel welcome to come and see us or contact us about anything in our magazines. As part of those efforts we have been working with the local community, businesses and parish council to bring you a jam-packed special edition this month focussing on the very best that South Normanton has to offer. Danielle has been trekking up and down the streets of South Normanton talking to people about this special edition and has been overwhelmed with the response she received. So much so that this is the BIGGEST and BEST magazine we have ever produced. It just goes to show what a special place South Normanton is. We thought it would be great to show off all the fabulous businesses, shops and community places there were in South Normanton so we have produced a special map showing all the business and organisations who have got involved, which you can find on the centre pages. There is also a key so you can find the relevant advert for each one. As well as the various adverts and pieces which have been submitted by organisations such as the South Normanton Parish Council, South Normanton and Pinxton Youth Development and the South Normanton Gardeners Association, we have interspersed some interesting historical notes and pictures throughout the section, illustrating the changes that have taken place in South Normanton. A lot of this information and the pictures have been provided by the Pinxton and South Normanton Local History Society and in particular thanks go out to Dennis Deneley and Graham Hunt who very kindly gave up some of their time to show me a small part of their fantastic archive. It really is impressive and fascinating; I could have stayed there all day. Help your local community grow and prosper! The high street is often the heart and soul of a village and South Normanton is no exception. Back in 1895 there were almost 90 shops, including 13 butchers, 3 bakers, 12 ‘beer retailers’, 5 shoe makers, 2 chemists, 8 general dealers, 13 grocers and provision dealers, 10 outfitters, drapers and tailors and 16 shopkeepers. Included in these was the fantastic sounding Mrs Sarah Shedley’s ‘Fried Fish, Cow Heel Dealer and Tripe Dresser’. My mind boggles at the thought of the stepping inside that store! By 1916 the number of commercial enterprises had increased to 166! However, as with towns and villages across the country South Normanton has seen a reduction in shops and stores and there are undeniably fewer commercial premises then back in 1916. But even these days, for a place of its size, South Normanton retains its breadth of character and colour within its retail establishments, and despite the arrival of out of town shopping outlets, supermarkets and retail parks in the area the high street in South Normanton continues to offer local residents an important and often unique, service in the modern world. Here at the Voice Magazine we believe massively in the SHOP LOCAL mantra. We started producing our magazines 9 years ago, shortly after buying our first home in the area when we realised that there was no longer anywhere reliable you could turn to in order to find good local businesses. There is no doubt that the demand is there as we have experienced ourselves since setting up Voice magazines. And why not, our local businesses are fantastic! The variety and depth of trades and goods on offer is

extensive and the quality of the service they provide is often better than further afield as they rely on their reputations. What’s more, the money we spend with them stays in our local economy with research showing that for every £10 we spend in a local shop, up to an additional £50 goes back into the local economy by that money being spent and recirculated. So next time you’re thinking of popping out to the shops, or hiring a company for a service or trade, please take a moment to think, ‘can I get that from anyone local?’. Yes, SNGA have proudly prospered and grown to achieve a current membership of over sixty people. SNAP Youth Development Project Since the beginning in December 2009, SNAP has worked to ensure local young people are given access to a variety of services that are relevant, fun, challenging, supportive and educational. The staff team value and respect all young people from all backgrounds and work to help them feel better included in their local area. This is supported by actively encouraging young people to participate in community activities and opportunities such as volunteering in local care homes, facilitating afterschool sports clubs and picking up litter from public areas. We believe that young people who feel included in their local area will show respect to others and the environment they live in. They will also feel more able to access the support they need as they progress towards adulthood. The SNAP regular activites are listed in the Out and About section of the magazine. MARKET STREET

THE POST MILL The Post Mill is an icon of South Normanton – Demolished in 1981 it now it lives on in the memories of those who saw it, and of course in the Post Mill Centre, which proudly carries its name. The Post Mill’s origins date back into South Normanton’s agricultural past. Back in the 18th and 19th century the corn that was produced locally would have been ground in the local mill, which was situated on a site to the rear of the Hawthorns public house. In 1810 this mill was offered for sale and was described as a wind post mill with French Stones and a cast metal neck. However, the Post Mill of fame was operated until 1908 by Ralph Weiss, when it fell into disrepair after his death. From top to bottom are 3 pictures of the mill, which show the slow demise of the mill over the years. Picture 1 dates to 1936 and was taken by Donald Muggeridge, as was picture 2 dated 1946. Picture 3 dates to around 1960/70 and is the most commonly used picture of the mill.

I just popped into the Post Office in South Normanton and five minutes later I had the correct photos in my hand. They have a brand-new piece of equipment and they can do it all right there and then, without even needing an appointment. They were able to check what size it needed to be and all the other rules and produce exactly the photos I needed. Brilliant! The Visa came back in record time and all for just £6! As I sit here thinking how to start and explain my journey back to the High Street of South Normanton as a business owner from growing up here as a child I can’t help but reminisce of what this High Street meant to me and my family and the many memories that it holds. For instance, how every week on a Saturday morning I went ‘up street’ with my mum and her shopping trolley to do the weekly shop and visited many of the shops on the high street to get what we needed. The Bakehouse, for our Saturday lunchtime cobs to have with sausages we got from Bacons Butchers (among other meat purchases) as we watched the wrestling on TV (as well as cheeky Victoria sandwich to follow). Then there was our trip around Spend ‘n’ Save that took forever as my mum would bump in to many friends and stop for a chat. The trip to the Fruit and Veg shop (where Fringes is now) for the vegetables for the Sunday Roast we had every week without fail! We sometimes had a little trip into Dorothy’s Clothes Store to see what latest fashions she had in and what little treat my mum could buy herself, or for me. And there was always a stop in Hardy’s Card shop to get the latest birthday or celebration cards for the family. All this shopping

was then duly carried all the way home on foot in the shopping trolley and in carrier bags, which I grumbled about all the way! As a teenager I had many a happy memory living in the area, from sitting in the ‘BTM’ (Now Tile Town) in snow or shine waiting for my friends, or at the Youth Club (now new houses) on New Street. I remember my first Job at Fringes Hairdressers (where Toastie Shack is now) as a Saturday girl. And fondly recall many a happy time on the ‘Top Rec’ in school holidays. I started training in The South Normanton Shiners before it moved to the Miners Welfare Car Park, and had many a happy time in the Miners Welfare on Saturday nights with my mum, dad and grandad. A lot of the businesses I have mentioned above are no longer with us, which is such a shame but they have been replaced by new businesses and the street is just as vibrant as ever. As a community we need to support this area and make the most of them as we are so lucky to have such an array of shops on our doorstep. Coming back here, to grow my business from a home office to a design studio was an easy decision, as I feel at home, welcome and have all that I need here to help support my business to grow.

And Finally… There is a danger in the modern age that we all fall into the trap of thinking “Someone needs to do something to make things better” and then we wait for someone brave to step forward with a plan. But instead of that why don’t we each take it upon ourselves to “do something”, no matter how small, because a lot of little actions add up to a hell of a lot! There is a fantastic ‘Spend Five’ campaign which encourages people to spend £5 a week at local businesses by http://www.totallylocally.org/. If every adult in South Normanton did this it would work out at £2.2million going directly into local businesses! If you add in the magic tenner effect, where every £10 spent locally adds £50 to the local economy then it adds up to over £10million and you can see the value your £5 a week can have and how much it would do to help boost the local area! But it doesn’t have to be spending money. You can give your time, and get a whole lot back in return. There are many great organisations working in South Normanton. We have featured a few in this edition but there are plenty more, just check out the Out and About section. All these organisations need you to get involved. Trust me you will be given a very warm welcome. This special edition has been part of our attempts to “do something”. I’d like to thank all of the businesses and organisations who have supported the publication of this special section with so much positivity. I read recently that a good moan is good for your health. So, I think George will be feeling a lot better right now. I have to say I agree with a lot of what he has to say… and as a dog owner I have to say I hate it when people don’t pick up their poo – Nobody likes to do it and a cork is too cruel

George gets angry

Over the years many of you have got to know George through meeting him as he goes about his business in the neighbourhood, or via his observations in your monthly copy of Voice Magazine. Whether or not you’ve met him personally and ‘chewed his ear’ on whatever topic concerns you, no-one can argue that he is one of the good guys who simply wants to do his bit to make life better for everyone. After all, that is why the Union of Clever & Intelligent People – UCIP to you and me! - appointed him People’s Champion’. Placid by nature he may be, but even George has a breaking point and you are advised not to read any further if you are in any way lazy, selfish, inconsiderate or simply just anti-social. In recent weeks, George has had occasion to visit friends at both Chesterfield Royal and King’s Mill Hospitals. Thankfully, both are on the road to full recovery but, as he left, George nearly had a seizure and joined them inside. He coughed and spluttered as he passed through a foul smelling hazy cloud just outside the main entrance. Here were people, some of whom were actually in-patients with various tubes attached to them, having a smoke. This despite signs everywhere pointing out that this was a nonsmoking site. What compels people to drop litter or, in some cases, deliberately throw rubbish from their car windows? In George’s village, a few weeks ago, a number of community spirited volunteers gave up a couple of hours of their time to remove litter from the streets and hedgerows. Whilst it

might be stretching the point to say that the area was so clean you could have eaten your dinner off the pavement, they did an excellent job. Sadly, within a week, the area was littered with amongst other things, discarded McDonald’s food & drink containers, cigarette packets (and fag ends), sweet wrappers and any number of empty cans/bottles. This just made George so boiling mad that, never mind the pavement, you could have fried an egg on his forehead. What might just push George ‘over the edge’ however, is those who fail to clean up after their dog. There are numerous signs across the area telling prospective offenders that if they ‘don’t pick up they will pay up’. Now George accepts that most (if not all) dogs are illiterate and probably don’t understand. However, as for their owners.................? To the best of his knowledge, George does not think that any of the ‘culprits’ are visually impaired so he has to conclude that in every case they are either lazy, selfish, inconsiderate or anti-social and, in all probability, each of these. However, he cannot campaign on his own and, recognising that it’s not easy, would like each of you to shame and embarrass any perpetrators of such anti-social behaviour that you come across. Next month, George will tell a few tales – some of which will make you smile - following his recent coach trip to Scotland.

It’s been an odd summer. Periods of intense heat, followed by torrential monsoon-like downpours. And whilst there is still loads going on in the garden with the later flowerers coming into their own and pots and baskets continuing till the first frosts, (so long as we remember to deadhead) it’s also a good time to think about the coming seasons whatever they throw at us. Congested perennials can be divided now while you can properly see their footprint on the garden and where there might be some gaps which need filling. Division keeps the plants healthy and of course gives you more flowers next year. You can do this every two to three years with plants such as crocosmia, delphiniums, blue geraniums, iris, hostas and anemone.

Lift with a fork and split either with back-to-back forks in the case of hostas with tough roots or in clumps of five or so shoots with plants like crocosmia. Replant in your chosen spot with a bit of garden compost to feed and keep well-watered. Bare root wallflowers can go in now for spring flowering and primulas and pansies and violas at the end of the month and it’s also time to think about planting daffs (now) and tulips (up till end of November). Prune your fruit trees after fruiting to encourage next year’s growth.

TOP TIP!

You can still sow salad rocket now and expect to be harvesting well towards winter and early next spring. There should be fewer slugs around to munch the tender shoots and rocket doesn’t mind a bit of cold. 06/11/2018 18:16

From a football perspective first and foremost, you have to say it’s a fine move for the Rams and an interesting one for Rooney himself. Signing a player of his caliber, a former England captain and record goalscorer is quite a coup for a second division team which haven’t played in the Premier League for more than a decade. And let’s be right, it’s a great signing for the Championship, Derby County and also the area. Anything that brings added focus and interest in this region can only be a good thing in my book and you have to tip your hat to Derby for having the audacity and ability to pull it off. Now, onto the rather thorny issue of the ethics. Rooney’s move is in part being funded by Derby’s club sponsor, a betting firm which in truth, creates its own discussion and there will be plenty who have an opinion and sit on both sides of the debate. A side issue is that a rather inventive way of bypassing Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations has been to give him a player/coach contract, which means under the Football League’s (EFL) FFP guidelines, only half of his salary has to be included in such calculations. Rambles with RafFa lake

We’re back to following one of fantastic walks from David of JH Legal again this month. I love these walks as the descriptions are so detailed and easy to follow and David always does such a great job finding these routes that are just perfect for us and our four-legged friends.

5. Now continue uphill with a hedge on your left and after a short distance bear right away from the hedge to cross an open field. At the far side pass through a gap and continue with a hedge on your left. When the hedge on the left ends keep ahead to cross an open field.

We begin the walk in Renishaw making use of the car park on the Trans Pennine Trail. The Trail is a fantastic resource which stretches across the country, with a significant stretch in our local area. There is more available on the Derbyshire.gov.uk website. We head north via a circuitous route which allows us to see a little of the countryside and taking us as far up as Killamarsh before looping back and heading south down the trail to where we began.

6. At the far side continue onto a lane. Follow the lane around to the left and then uphill. At the top of the hill ignore a path on the right and continue straight ahead to follow a sign for ‘Trans Pennine Way N’. After a short distance pass through a gap and onto a tarmac lane.

There is one road to cross so please take care however most of the walk is on paths and trails. Please wear appropriate footwear and always follow the countryside code.

7. Turn left, cross a bridge and then in a short distance turn right onto a footpath signposted for ‘Trans

1. With your back to the car park entrance, walk straight ahead to pass by a large metal gate to a finger board sign. Turn right to ‘Chesterfield’. Follow the path going uphill, then just prior to going under a bridge, turn left along a footpath, with houses over to your right.

3. After some distance pass through a gap and down a slope onto a trail. Passing a bench seat on your left cross straight over the trail, pass through a gap and bear around to the right along a footpath. After a short distance the path joins with a lane going uphill for a short distance and then turn right onto a path marked for ‘Westhorpe Hills’.

2. Follow the path for some distance passing beneath a footbridge then continue with a fence and a pond on your left and houses over to your right. After some distance, when the houses on your right end, continue straight ahead through some trees until reaching a road. Cross the road and continue ahead along a marked footpath.
