Editor’s Message An animal themed message this month. Firstly we have a lost cat L A reader has been in contact and asked us to publicise the below poster to see if we can reunite them with their beloved family pet. So please check your sheds and garages for Toffee and if you have any further information, please contact them on the details on the poster. Secondly, a little update on my fostering news! Soooo after the home check, it all happened quite quickly and within a week we picked up our first foster dog, Oscar (black and white on the right). Here he is with his fozzer brother Rafa (liver and white on the left). As you can see, he has settled in really well! A bit too well according to Rafa and the husband J. He was put up for rehoming due to a change in working hours and he’s been an absolute angel. But for the fact that he’s had lots of interest already... we would be “failed” fostering at the first hurdle. Still, it does mean that we’ll be able to help another little doggy in the future. If you are Missing from Blackwell since 22 nd Jan interested in Spaniels either adopting on fostering, check out the website Toffee, our family cat One more month until our new SELSTON, PINXTON AND Aged 8, he’s a JACKSDALE EDITION is launched. If you know anyone ginger and white that is interested in either advertising in or delivering... then please drop me a line either via phone or email and long haired male we’ll sort out everything else this end! Friendly and is Happy Reading,

Lost Cat Have you seen Toffee?

Book Review

Neil Gaiman almost writes fairy tales. If you remember the fairy tales you heard in childhood they were rarely about fluffy bunnies and sweet princesses. It was usually wolves and witches and poisoning and children getting trapped in gingerbread houses while trolls lurked under bridges. And that is the kind of fantasy Gaiman weaves. If you’re not already a Gaiman reader, you might have heard of the American Gods series written by him and filmed for Netflix last year. But American Gods is a serious (and seriously long) piece of magical storytelling and may not be the easiest way to get hooked on this style of writing. Although it is absolutely brilliant if you are up for it. However The Ocean at the End of the Lane while equally serious, is also simply beautiful. It’s about childhood and memory and darkness and magic and how all those things live with us and inform the way we live as we get older. It reminds you of all the half-remembered things about being a child. In parts it’s dark and menacing but at the same time fun and complicated and emotionally very satisfying. Gaiman has written scripts for Doctor Who; worked with Terry Pratchett who wrote the Discworld series and also written graphic novels as well as having his work adapted for film, TV and radio. The Ocean at the end of the Lane would make a literally fabulous introduction to his world of magical thinking.

Give a dog a home... Jerry Green Dog Rescue, care for and rehome abandoned and unwanted dogs, and will never put a dog to sleep unless it’s health or temperament make this the kindest option. We receive no official funding, or lottery funding and are dependent on donations from the public. We run five centres in the east of England, including your nearest one in Nottinghamshire at Warsop Lane, Blidworth, NG21 0PG. We are open 1:30pm to 4:00pm every day except Wednesday.

1 year - Crossbreed You’d think a dog like me with my amazing good looks and devilish charm would get snapped up right?! I keep putting all this effort into getting dressed up for my dates, ready to show off my best self, but somehow I keep getting stood up :-( Where are you ladies! Nevertheless I know my soul mate is out there somewhere and I will be here patiently waiting for as long as it takes. I’m looking for a special lady (I find men a little scary) to be my companion and I day dream of us spending time together out walking and then coming back to snuggle on the sofa in an evening. If you’d like to know more about me please call my other ladies at the Notts centre on 01623 792886.

9 years - Crossbreed Hello Everyone, My name is Tara and even though I was rehomed in 2015 I have found myself back with Jerry Green, through no fault of my own. I am now looking for my last forever home where I can get lots of affection, love and walks. I prefer the company of people, so I am looking for a quiet loving home where someone is around most of the day and people that like to go for walks but aren’t interested in meeting other dogs.....this would be perfect for me. If you would like to meet me please give the Nottinghamshire centre a call on 01623 792886 to book an appointment.

Rambles with Rafa So Spring is about to arrive and if you’re anything like me you’re more than ready for it! Whilst our furry friends need a walk whatever the weather, it’s a lot nicer when it’s not quite so grotty. This month’s walk sets of from the village of Scarcliffe. It’s a lovely, varied walk that makes use of some paths in the nearby woods allowing you to explore this lesser seen part of this beautiful area. We did this walk on a cold and windy Christmas Eve and it was made all the more special by a trip to the Elm Tree Pub a few miles away in Elmton. It is dog friendly if you book in the bar and the food and staff were fantastic.

6-mile circular walk from Scarcliffe

A mid distance walk which should take you and your dog around 2½-3 hours to complete. The walk is mostly on trails and paths but there may be some uneven and muddy terrain, particularly with inclement weather so please wear appropriate footwear. There is also a couple of roads to cross and one short section of road to walk along, so please take plenty of care. As always, follow the countryside code, keeping dogs on leads where appropriate.

Start: Church of Saint Leonard, Scarcliffe. S44 6TE

1. Standing with your back to the church turn left and continue along the road. After a short distance and just prior to a road on your right, turn right onto a lane and signposted footpath to thread between the houses. At the end of the lane/driveway continue straight ahead onto a footpath. After a very short distance, ignore the stone stile on the right and climb over the stone stile in front of you. 2. Now continue straight ahead and walk along the edge of a field with a hedge on your right. After some distance follow the footpath sharp right and immediately cross over a stone bridge. Now continue straight ahead to cross a field with a hedge on your left. 3. After some distance continue along the footpath with a hedge on both sides and then cross over a wooden footbridge. Now continue straight ahead going gently uphill into some trees. After a short distance you will reach a lane. Turn right onto the lane and pass a marker post on your right and continue straight ahead. 4. Continue straight ahead for a short distance and then the lane splits into two. Take the left split and then curl around to the left to continue along a lane with trees on both sides. After a long distance you will continue straight ahead with trees on your left and open views to the right. 5. Continue until eventually reaching a road. Turn right along the road for a short distance and then turn right again along ‘Common Lane’. After a short distance and at a bus stop on your left bear slightly left onto a footpath running parallel with the road. Then after some distance the path comes back alongside the road. 6. Continue along the road for a long distance, passing an academy on your left. After passing the academy and upon reaching two no entry signs on your left, turn right along a lane and signposted footpath on your right. 7. After a short distance pass by a large gate and then continue with a hedge on both sides. Continue for a long distance until reaching a footpath on your left which is marked by a marker post on your left. Immediately after the footpath on the left and at a junction of lanes bear to the right and then continue straight ahead with a hedge on your left and trees on your right. 8. Continue along this lane for a long distance and eventually reaching a T junction of lanes. Turn left at the T junction and continue along a lane. After a short distance ignore a lane on your right and continue straight ahead along the lane heading into the trees.

9. Eventually the lane begins to climb steeply. At the top of the hill the lane splits into two. Take the lane on the right and continue straight ahead heading through the trees. After some distance you will pass by a gate and come out of the trees to a T junction of paths. Standing with an open field in front of you turn right and continue along a footpath with trees on your right and open views on your left. 10. Continue straight ahead and you will begin to drop downhill. At the bottom of the hill upon reaching a small fence directly in front of you, turn right, continue for a very short distance and then pass through a gap in the fence. Turn immediately left, ignoring the path going downhill through the trees, continue straight ahead for a very short distance, and then turn right to continue downhill through an open field. 11. At the bottom of the hill cross over a small wooden footbridge and then continue straight ahead. After a very short distance turn right onto a path heading uphill, and staying close to a stone wall on your right. After a short distance pass through a gap on your right and into a field. Continue uphill keeping the trees on your left and the open field to your right. 12. After a short distance the footpath turns into a lane. Continue straight ahead with a hedge on both sides. After some distance you will pass through a small metal swing gate adjacent to a large metal gate. Continue straight ahead until reaching a road. 13. Turn right along the road heading downhill and back into the village of Scarcliffe. Eventually you will reach the church.

Home to the ‘Big Five’ of African wildlife, lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Head to the coast and you’ll also discover bountiful marine life, including playful penguins on pretty Boulders Beach in Cape Town and giant humpback whales, bottlenose dolphins and seals. Sri Lanka Packed full of mesmerising sights, wonderful wildlife and palm-fringed beaches, Sri Lanka promises to deliver a truly unforgettable travel experience for animal lovers! The Udawalawe National Park is one of the best places to spot the famous Sri Lankan elephant, whilst Yala National Park, the second largest national park on the island, is home to sloth bears, elephants, monkeys, crocodiles and the elusive leopard. Ubud, Bali Whilst you’d be forgiven for never leaving your sun lounger in Bali, head inland and you’ll soon discover that there’s much more to this idyllic island. Artsy Ubud is surrounded by lush rainforest, cascading jungle valleys and terraced paddy fields. Watch monkeys fly from tree to tree at The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, home to approximately 700 macaques. Nearby, find the Taro Elephant Safari Park, home to 27 Sumatran elephants made homeless by deforestation. Tanzania For an authentic African safari experience, there’s no place like Tanzania! From the dramatic volcanic landscape of the Ngorongoro Crater to the fascinating Olduvai Gorge, this incredible country is home to nearly every species of African animal imaginable! Mike’s Musings Have you felt it? There is a wind of change sweeping across the country. People in their droves are uniting behind a new cause with a new charismatic leader. (if only that last part was true). UCIP, the people’s party, providing the people are ‘like, really, really smart’ is leading a common-sense revolution to save us all. Here’s Mike to tell you more…

Part 2 of ‘How we can make this a better country’ Having announced the intention to form a new political party that speaks for and on behalf of the people, I’ve had support from the most unlikely of sources. Well, I had an email from a Mr Donald J Trump. He has suggested that the party be called the Union of Clever & Intelligent People or UCIP for short. We like that, but despite this Trump fella claiming to be a genius, I’m not sure he’d meet the membership criteria Set out below is the second part of our manifesto. Like the first, this demonstrates just how in tune we are with the things that really matter.

Problem No 6 – seriously overweight people travelling on aeroplanes taking up valuable space in the cabin and forcing us weedy individuals (the majority of passengers!) to endure an uncomfortable flight. Policy – all passengers to be weighed at check in and those found to have a body mass index 20% greater than it should be, to have their luggage reduced by the equivalent weight as a means of counterbalancing. If they refuse to co-operate (or have no luggage) they travel in the hold. Problem No 7 – The damage to the environment caused by non-recyclable coffee cups. Policy – All Starbucks/Costa Coffee etc. customers to provide their own re-useable mug or beaker. Those who fail to comply with this reasonable request to have the boiling drink poured into their cupped hands. For a second offence the drink should go straight into their mouths. If they still fail to comply, the next drink is poured over their head. Problem No 8 – unsightly tattoos. Policy – We at UCIP recognise that individuals can do whatever they like with their bodies. We have no problem with, although fail to understand

why, otherwise sensible men/women having a tasteful tattoo. That is their choice but... c’mon, some are simply repulsive! As a result, as part of the National Census carried out every ten years, the ‘head of the household’ to request that all those accountable to he/she take part in a parade. This will require them to remove all clothing to ensure a proper inspection. Any offensive tattoos discovered as part of this process to be reported in the Offensive Tattoo section of the Census form. By the time of the next Census (2021), UCIP believe that many of the dog poo wardens created to deal with the issue we raised last month, will be looking for more work. After undergoing training they would take on the part time role of OTRO (Offensive Tattoo Removal Operative) and visit relevant households and ensure that this problem is permanently eliminated.

Right, and this will really test you, can you name the last ten leaders of the British Liberal/ Liberal Democratic Party? As ever, no prizes, but you can see how many you got right at the bottom of the page.

Spring is an amazing time in the garden. It means sowing, planting and growing – all the things we gardeners wait for during the dreary grey days.

Most summer bedding, half hardy and hardy annuals can be sown from seed now. Half hardies such as busy lizzies, lobelia, marigolds and petunias can be started indoors or in a heated greenhouse. Once the soil gets to about 6 degrees you can sew hardy annuals directly into the border or container. This includes useful fillers such as nasturtiums, nigella and even sunflowers. Summer bulbs – the likes of lilies and gladioli can also go in now. Remember the general rule for most bulbs is two to three times the depth of the bulb (ie 2 inch bulb gets 6 inch hole) and twice the width apart with a bit of grit mixed in the hole and with the growing tip up. Trees, fruit trees and shrubs should start to be given fertiliser now and you can mulch well-rotted compost round roses.

Top Tip!

New growth also means slugs. There’s no easy answer but you can fight back. Biological control – ie nematodes - can be watered into the soil once it is warm enough. If you order them online or through garden centres they’ll be sent out once the temperature is right. Organic traps include orange and grapefruit skins round the base of vulnerable plants or jars half filled with beer. Copper tape around pots may help or copper impregnated matting and there are pellets for borders. Non organic pellets should be used carefully – they can harm wildlife, pets and children. But organic pellets, made with ferric phosphate are just as effective. Mulch can actually make things worse as the little beasties like the warmth and moisture. Good luck!

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Nottingham Forest writer at the Nottingham Post ‘just have a little patience’, sang Gary Barlow. Some thought he was addressing the tax man but maybe he was really talking to football fans. This month our Barry tries to reason with the mind of a football fan. Good look Barry!

It’s been another time of change at Nottingham Forest following the departure of manager Mark Warburton just hours before the turn of the year. Despite the season starting brightly, things once again took a turn for the worse at the City Ground and the former Rangers man was given his P45 before being replaced by Aitor Karanka – results took a while to turn around with the threat of a relegation battle not too far away. On the face of it, Karanka is a wise appointment and one that could finally, after almost 20 years, restore the Reds back into the Premier League, just as he did at Middlesbrough a couple of years earlier. As Karanka tweeted recently, ‘Rome wasn’t built in day’ and those words come on the back of Warburton likening the club to an oil tanker that needed some help turning around – nothing could be more accurate. Fans in this new modern world don’t have time. Patience is something that’s alien to them and the prospect of building a football club is something that they, nor club owners, have any modicum of patience for. They want success now, no, in fact, they want it last month. It just is not possible, there’s 23 other clubs in the Championship that think the same and the vast majority, like Forest and

their followers, feel they have a divine right to be in the top division – they don’t. To their credit, the Reds are averaging 25,000 or so at the City Ground and should they do keep that average for the remainder of the campaign, it’ll be the first time since a ninth placed Premier League finish in 1996 that’s been the case. What those fans demand is success, something they’ve not seen for a good while and because Forest have been left behind by clubs that have been run far more prudently, it may well take more time than many would like. If Nottingham Forest are to be a force in English football again; one that’s to eat at the top table of the game in this country and enjoy the prestige and riches that go along with that then people need to develop some kind of patience. The P word may be used time and time again, it is pertinent to the point, however, that this is a club that new chairman Nicholas Randall pointed out last summer, was in intensive care. As a general rule of thumb, those in intensive care can often go on and make a full recovery. However, they do so in time, it’s not something that happens in the space of a nine-month football season, it may take much longer than that and along the way there may be one or two hiccups.
