Editor’s Message Happy New Year!!! Wasn’t 2017 a strange one!? Very few people predicted all the outcomes and irrespective of your leanings, the knock on effect seems to be pleasing no-one! Still the world keeps turning and so we crack on J

For us, cracking on involves launching another magazine in 2018! Last year we acquired the Rural Trader in the Peak District and thus the Rural Voice was born. It has been nearly a year since then and I think it is fair to say that the readers are learning to love the quirkiness of Voice Magazines, which we’ve been delivering in this area for the past 7 (soon to be 8) years! We’re planning the launch in April 2018 so standby for more information in the coming months. We’ve also added in a couple of new features recently such as the Loopy Library, more articles and this month we have a brand new crossword feature. We are constantly working on new things to bring to the readers and we have more in the pipeline but is there anything you would like to see? Such as a health feature? Or a motoring feature? Or anything else? Send us your suggestions on email or on social media, we’re always more than happy to hear from our readers J In other, more personal news, every January I like to set up my Bucket List for the year. I don’t do resolutions as I always break them within the first 10 minutes! So I do a Bucket List instead. Last year’s involved the zip wire, a couple of travel destinations, zorbing and climbing another of the 3 peaks as well as some other bits and bobs. If I don’t manage to complete it, I carry things over for the next and I’m looking forward to more destinations, more peaks, zorbing (as I didn’t get around to that last year!) and husband permitting, some charity dog work! Slimming World Recipe
Chicken Saag For so many a new year means a new you so why not give this fantastic curry a go. It’s as satisfying as it is mouth-watering to help keep you on plan. Top tip: why not replace the chicken with leftover chicken or turkey? Serves 4 Ready in: 30-60 minutes

Method:
1. Spray a large, deep non-stick frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and place over a medium heat. 2. Add the onions and fry for 5 minutes, adding a little water if they start to stick. 3. Add the mushrooms, ginger and garlic and cook for a further 5 minutes. 4. Stir in the curry powder, tomato puree, stock cube and 300ml of water and cook for 2 minutes. 5. Add the chicken and simmer for 10 minutes. 6. Add the tomato, spinach and coriander and cook for a further 5 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through. 7. Take the pan off the heat, stir the yogurt into the curry and season to taste. Serve hot with rice and your favourite vegetables.

10 years 7 months old - American Bulldog Buster is gentle and friendly with children and is fine with other dogs. He is clean in the home and can be left alone. Buster has a condition called elbow dysplasia and needs daily medication for pain. He still has a quality of life and enjoys walks and being fussed. Due to his condition Buster cannot have very long walks but can have short, frequent exercise. Buster is incredibly friendly and very endearing. He particularly loves to play with toys and travel in the car.

10 years old - Crossbreed I was found wandering the streets and brought here to Jerry Green Dog Rescue where I have a warm comfy bed, yummy food, and lots of cuddles from the team here but I still dream of finding my forever home. If you’re looking for an older, yet active chap please consider me, I really don’t act my age by any means. I still enjoy a good walk and playing with my toys. Then we can cuddle up together whilst watching your favourite TV program. I have met lots of new human friends while being at Jerry Green and enjoy being in their company. Everyone always says nice things about me. With my new friends we play fetch and they take me for nice walks. They say I walk really nicely on the lead making me really easy to manage. I do like walking with other dogs however I like to have all the attention so a home as an only pet would be ideal. I am deaf and partially sighted so it might be better if I lived in a home with older children who could understand this. Lots of the other dogs who came in after me have already gone to their forever homes, but I just get overlooked. Why doesn’t anybody want me? Rambles with Rafa Our resident rambler (David from JH legal) is a master of finding hidden gems. He takes some raw materials such as a trail, a great view, a car park, a picnic spot, a good footpath and weaves them together to make a fantastic walk. And this month’s walk is a perfect example of this! The base of the walk is the Stockley Trail, which we detour away from at the start to take in the ‘Flash’ and the Carr Vale nature reserve. We briefly re-join the trail before diverting off again to take us across country, providing us with pleasant views of Bolsover Castle, before finally re-joining the trail to take us back to the car park.
4-mile circular walk from Carr Vale via the Stockley Trail
A reasonably short walk which should take you and your dog around 2 hours to complete. Although it is mostly on trails and paths there may be some uneven and muddy terrain, depending on the weather so please wear appropriate footwear. As always, follow the countryside code, keeping dogs on leads where appropriate. There is one brief section of road, so please take plenty of care.

After a very short distance and prior to reaching a large notice board turn sharp right along a well laid path to pass the car park on your right.
11. Turn left along the road and continue for some distance until the tarmac ends and the road becomes a lane. After a short distance where the lane bends left and into a car park, continue straight ahead along a footpath keeping a pond on your left.
3. Upon passing a sign board reading ‘Carr Vale Nature Reserve’ on your right follow the main path around to the left and continue straight ahead to pass through a metal width restrictor.
13. Continue along the trail for some distance passing beneath a bridge and cross straight over a lane. Continue gently uphill for a short distance and then upon reaching a concrete sculpture on your right, turn sharp left to continue along a footpath going gently uphill.

Take the right split and follow this path as it curls around to the left and then continue straight ahead for some distance, ignoring paths to the left and continuing straight ahead, going gently uphill for a short distance and then continuing straight ahead
4. Continue with a pond on your right to reach a fork in the path, taking the right split to continue with a fence on your left. After a short distance follow the path around to the right and continue with the pond on your right.
5. Continue straight ahead for some distance ignoring a path on the right and at a fork in the path ignore the right split going uphill and keep left. Continue straight ahead for some distance, cross a small footbridge and then pass through a metal width restrictor.
6. Now continue straight ahead with a large pond over to your right. Continue to pass by a footpath with a width restrictor on your left and for quite some distance, leaving the large pond behind, keeping some trees on your left and open views to your right.
12. At the far end of the pond bear slightly right to continue along the footpath passing close by a telegraph pole on your left. Then pass through a metal width restrictor and turn right onto the Stockley Trail.
14. At the top of the hill follow the path around to the right passing several sign boards on both sides. Continue ahead for a short distance and then begin to descend until reaching a T junction of paths. 15. Turn right along a path until reaching another path on your right. Turn right onto this path and continue until the path split taking the left split to bear sharp around to the left and continue gently uphill.
16. Continue along this path for some distance passing a memorial on your left and continue straight ahead for some distance until reaching the car park on your left.
7. After some distance pass through a large double metal gate and onto a road. Turn left and continue for some distance until you reach a signposted crossroads with the ‘Stockley Trail’. Turn right to continue along the Stockley Trail.
8. Continue along the trail until reaching a signposted crossroads of footpaths. Turn left to pass through a gap into a field and continue along a signposted path to ‘Carr Vale’. At the far side cross straight over the road to continue along a signposted bridleway.
9. Continue gently uphill with a hedge on both sides. At the top of the hill when the hedge on the right comes to an end continue straight ahead with a barbwire fence on your right. After a short distance ignore the small wooden gate which is diagonal right and follow the path around to the left to continue with a barbwire fence on the right.
10. After a short distance follow the path into a field, then bear slightly to the right and continue along the edge of a field with a hedge on your right until reaching a single-track tarmac road. This walk is for illustrative purposes only. Book Review
The first snow is falling. What could be more natural than the appearance of snowmen? Except these snowmen are far from the jolly “walking in the air” characters of Raymond Briggs’ fantasy of childhood Christmas. These snowmen come from a much darker place and they bring very strange deaths in their wake. Jo Nesbo’s seriously chilling Scandi-noir crime thriller, The Snowman, has been turned into a film and it’s easy to see why. But at the same time as dragging you relentlessly from one gruesomely scary murder to the next; the book also does a nice line in grown-up cynical humour and throws in some interesting stuff about life in the wilds (and fleshpots) of Norway. It’s not all scratchy woolly jumpers and smorgasbord. Jo Nesbo has been writing thrillers about detective Harry Hole for some time, so if this one grabs you there are plenty more to go at. He’s an expert at red herrings and pulling the rug from under your feet just when you think you – like Harry Hole - have got the case solved. And the last hundred pages of this book don’t let go. Just make sure you’ve got enough time to finish them all in one go.

Reader Review: The NEC Festive Gift Fair
Sometimes we receive something from one of our readers that helps to make all the hard work worthwhile. All of the contact we receive from our readers is so valuable to us; from the information on events and groups, to feedback on the magazine, our advertisers and, as in this instance, our competitions. So, you can imagine how delighted we were when Sarah, one of the winners of tickets to the NEC gift fair, offered to send us a review of her day. In her own words here is Sarah’s review. What a wonderful surprise to receive an email on 30 th October from the Voice Magazine to inform me that I had won a pair of tickets to the Festive Gift Fair at the NEC in Birmingham! Having recently lost my lovely Mum following a short illness this was a truly positive tonic. Not only that but one of my sisters who lives in Spain was visiting at that time so I was able to take her with me. It was a beautiful sunny day with crystal clear blue skies. We chose to go on the Friday. Hall 5 was busy but not so rammed that we couldn’t get around comfortably or see the wonderful gifts and goods on offer. My sister bought several beautifully crafted Christmas tree ornaments for friends in Spain as well as her (grown up) daughter who also lives there. There was live music (yes... we did jig along and have a sing-song... as did many other jolly folks!) The food stalls were wonderful... all manner of different cheeses, pickles and spicy dips and sauces. We decided on the sausage stall to choose our wonderful hot dog lunch. The cake stalls kept calling to us as we passed by but we managed to resist! The atmosphere was amazing and for a few hours we were able to push our recent sadness aside and do exactly what our Mum would have wanted... have some fun! I would like to say a very big thank you to Emily and her team at the Voice, not only for this wonderful treat, but for the service and information that they provide to our local community. Having moved to the locality just 18 months ago after 27 years of living in Skegness, my husband and I knew no local trades people. The Voice was absolutely invaluable in assisting us to use local businesses ranging from electricians to fascia work to garden projects. I still get a little bit giddy when the next copy drops through our letterbox. Having acquired Sarah, Rudolph and his rider a rescue puppy earlier in the year we eagerly flick and her sister Jan through to the Rambles with Rafa page to find our next new adventure! We have also been to many an event that we wouldn’t have known about without the ‘Out & About’ page.

Mike’s Musings As a big fan of tall tales I really enjoyed this month’s musing. I’ve heard many over the years and the best often have a twist in the tail, I even heard one where the tail was the twist, but that’s another story. Over to you Mike…
‘I had an interesting day in Alfreton last month’ I used my bus pass – wonder how long I’ll be allowed to keep that – and popped up to Alfreton on a Thursday morning recently to see a guy who had advertised that he’d got a talking dog for sale. I wasn’t that bothered about having a pet, but did think it would be useful, if for no other reason than it would give the missus someone to talk to when I was down the pub. When I found the house on Long Meadow Road and saw that it was neat, tidy and with a pleasant garden, I was pleased, as this suggested caring owners and it was likely that the dog was well looked after. I rang the bell and a pleasant looking chap opened the door and invited me in. I was a little nervous as, other than my Uncle Lee’s parrot, I’d never come across a talking creature of any description. I was put at ease straightaway however, as the owner said, “I can see that you’re a bit sceptical, so why don’t you go through to the kitchen where Russell, that’s the dog’s name, is looking forward to meeting you.” I felt a bit daft but when I went through the kitchen door, there was Russell and yes, he did look pleased to see me. “Hello there, Russell,” I ventured, “I understand that you can talk.”
“Sure I can,” came the almost immediate reply. “Not only that but I can read and write and I’m also quite a sporty dog. It might seem strange to you but not only have I ridden a Grand National winner, I’ve made a 147 break at snooker and scored a hat-trick for Scotland (did I forget to mention that he was a West Highland Terrier?) against England at Hampden Park.” After a bit more conversation during which I established that Russell would be happy to come and live at our house, I made my apologies saying that I was going to have a chat with his owner. “Your dog is fantastic,” I said as I went back through to the front room, “I’m just surprised that you want to sell him. What’s the problem? Is he not good with children or something?” “Oh no,” came the reply, “He’s alright with kids. It’s just that I can’t put up with his constant lying anymore!”

It might be frosty, it might be soggy, but there’s still life in the old gardener yet.
Plant raspberry canes for next year while they are still dormant. This means any time before the end of February so long as the soil isn’t too frozen or waterlogged. Dig a mix of John Innes no 3 and ordinary compost into your soil. (And if your strawberry plants are more than three years old, now is a good time to order new ones for next year – they become significantly less productive as time goes on). Bare root roses can also go in between now and late February. They’re much cheaper than the container versions you’ll get later in the year and there’s masses of choice on the internet. Don’t let the roots dry out, so if they arrive during a particularly wet or frosty period just heel them in and leave until you think conditions are a bit more amenable. Heeling in means digging a hole with enough room for the roots, lay the plant at an angle (about 45 degrees) with the roots totally in the hole and backfill with soil. This will keep them happy until you’re ready to put them in their final spot before March. Winter can be a risky time for houseplants. As a general rule, unless they are flowering profusely, water less to avoid them collapsing from waterlogging. Also avoid leaving them on draughty windowsills or where they may be exposed to cold conditions overnight. And keep them away from exposure to direct heat such as fires or radiators. Remember most of them like stable conditions.

If you’ve got a pond, lob a ball onto the surface so you can easily create a breathing hole for fish or amphibians when it gets icy.

So, what better a time to reflect on the relative positions our local clubs find themselves in and who better a man to do it that our Barry…
With the New Year festivities, it’s only right to reflect on what was another fascinating year across our top football clubs. You’d have to say that Notts County have arguably made the greatest progress since Alan Hardy bought the club from Ray Trew in January, carefully plotting the Magpies’ move to League Two safety under Kevin Nolan, a man he appointed shortly after his own arrival. County have surged from being haunted with relegation from the Football League and looking deep into the abyss to challenging at the top of the division, and look a solid bet to at least make the top six, if not sustain a charge for the automatic spots. Notts are a club going places and the work being done at Meadow Lane is proof that with a little thought, care, attention and money spent wisely, things can be achieved. At Nottingham Forest, 2017 was another year that consisted of poor performance, negativity and off-field problems that blighted a club downtrodden and staring relegation in the face. Fawaz Al Hasawi’s departure, coupled with the takeover by Evangelos Marinakis and the appointment of Mark Warburton has seen new positivity engulf the City Ground. Season ticket sales are at a record high for this century, while week-to-week attendances are more then 5,000 up on this stage a year ago. Warburton’s philosophy and ethos to make Forest a more watchable side has certainly

seen them pick up some fine results, though consistency is something that would have been high on the Christmas list of everyone connected with the football club. January will be an interesting time at the City Ground, and we expect that the new owners will back Warburton in the transfer market to help the Reds get closer to the top six, which isn’t beyond the realms of possibility should they be in and around the top 10 as the month wears on. Derby probably have their best chance of sustaining a challenge under Gary Rowett than in any of the previous campaigns, where they’ve choked when the going got tough. Under the former Birmingham boss, Rowett’s Rams seem to have developed a backbone that has been lacking before, which will stand them in good stead as the season moves into the New Year. Despite crowds at Pride Park being considerably lower than in previous seasons, and fans whinging about the style of football Rowett adopts, all the time the Rams are winning games; the detractors should keep their mouths shut. Football may also be entertainment, but it’s about winning. Under Steve McClaren, there might have been much more swashbuckling football, but look where it got them. Rowett’s style is ideally suited to the rigours of the second tier and he knows only too well that with the likes of Matej Vydra, Tom Lawrence and David Nugent, they have the firepower needed. If Derby get into the top six and ultimately win promotion, few will care about how they got there.
