Slimming World Recipe Baked Eggs with Pepper s, Spinach an d Tomato This recipe from Slimming World is great for making you feel full whilst still packing a real punch in terms of flavour. A versatile dish that can be vegetarian or you can add cooked chicken, ham or bacon when you add the eggs for a meatier dish. Ingredients:
1. Boil the potatoes for 10 minutes, or until just tender. Drain well. 2. Meanwhile, spray a large frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a medium-high heat. Add the onion, garlic and pepper and stir-fry for 5 minutes until softened. 3. Stir in the potatoes and beans, then add the tomatoes, passata and Worcestershire sauce to taste. Season and simmer for 10-12 minutes, or until thickened. 4. Stir through the spinach and allow to wilt. Make 4 shallow indents in the mixture and crack an egg into each one. Cover and cook gently for 5 minutes, or place under a medium-hot grill, until the eggs are set to your liking. Add a twist of black pepper and serve garnished with basil leaves.

American Bulldog, 10 years 7 months old Buster is gentle and friendly with children and is fine with other dogs. He is clean in the home and can be left alone. Buster has a condition called elbow dysplasia and needs daily medication for pain. He still has a quality of life and enjoys walks and being fussed. Due to his condition Buster cannot have very long walks but can have short, frequent exercise. Buster is incredibly friendly and very endearing. He particularly loves to play with toys and travel in the car.

Crossbreed, 8 years 4 months old Jodie has been fine with older children but is not suitable to live with other animals. Jodie has been clean in the home and can be left alone for very short periods. Jodie is not destructive but will bark when on her own. She adores playing with a ball and having fuss and company. She is very interactive and has a fabulous character.

Rambles with Rafa Next up is lovely walk starting at Newstead Village and taking in some of the woodland near Annesley. This should be a perfect Autumnal walk, especially through the woods, but make sure you are ready for a bit of mud if it’s been rainy (as it so often is). Don’t forget to sponsor him on his 1000mile challenge in aid of John Eastwood Hospice. www.justgiving.com/fundraising/David-Hallam6 This walk begins in Newstead and Annesley Country Park where Rafa and Tilly took the opportunity for a dip (make sure not to allow your dogs to jump in the first lake as there are normally fishermen). Next up you briefly walk through the edge of Annesley to pass by the historic and picturesque Annesley All Saints Church. Then you loop through the pretty Annesley Forest before finally heading back through Newstead Village to the car park.
5-mile circular walk from Newstead and Annesley Country Park
A mid length walk which should take you and your dog around 2 1/2 hours to complete. There is a mix of trials, paths, and roads to there may be some uneven and muddy terrain, particularly depending on the weather so please wear appropriate footwear. As always, follow the countryside code, keeping dogs on leads where appropriate and be careful on roads.

Start: Newstead and Annesley Country Park (car park, opposite The Pit Micropub) Tilford Road, Newstead NG15 0BS 1. Standing with your back to the car park entrance, walk straight ahead to pass through a large wooden gate, pass by a signboard reading ‘Newstead and Annesley Country Park’ on your right and then continue along a wide and well laid path.
2. After a short distance you will pass a lake and a building on your right. Pass through a gap, continue straight ahead along the wide path climbing gently uphill, to pass a second and then a third lake on your right. 3. After the third lake you will begin to descend for quite some distance until reaching a large metal gate. Pass by the gate and then pass beneath an arch bridge. After some distance pass by another large metal gate and continue ahead to reach a road. 4. Turn right and continue until reaching a T junction of roads. Turn right and after a short distance turn right again along ‘Moseley Road’.
5. Continue along Moseley Road to the very end and then turn left along another road. Follow this road to the very end and then turn left once more onto ‘Byron Road’. After a short distance turn right along a road signposted for ‘Parish Hall’. After a short distance pass the Parish Hall on your right and then continue straight ahead along a tarmac footpath. 6. After a short distance pass through a metal width restrictor and then continue straight along the path going uphill. Near the top of the hill pass through some concrete post and, almost immediately, turn left along a footpath opposite a bungalow (No.9) to pass between some houses.

11. Continue on the main path for some distance and then pass by a metal gate to reach a main road. Continue along this path for some distance until the path splits in two. Take the left split, continue straight ahead and then continue to go steep downhill. At the bottom of the hill you pass through what is often a very wet boggy patch of land making the path ahead difficult to follow. Be sure to continue straight ahead going uphill.
13. Ignoring all other paths to the left and right, go straight to the very top of the hill and then drop back down the other side. At the bottom of the hill and at a crossroads of footpaths turn right along a well laid footpath. After a short distance pass by a large metal gate and to a road.
14. Cross straight over the road to pass through a wooden chicane and onto a recreation ground. Continue straight ahead passing a skate park on your right and then pass through a wooden swing gate onto a road. 15. Turn left to follow the main road, ‘Tilford Road’, with terraced houses on the left and then after some distance pass’ Newstead Centre’ on your right. After a short distance cross over a railway line and then after a very short distance turn left back into the car park.
7. Continue straight ahead to walk across the top of a cul-de-sac and then towards a block of garages. Thread between the garages and pass through a metal chicane to continue along a footpath. After a short distance pass by a graveyard on your right and then a church on your left.
8. Immediately after the church cross over a crossroads of footpaths and continue straight ahead along a footpath into some trees. Continue downhill until you reach a road. Turn left along the road for a short distance and then turn right onto a lane going uphill passing a sign on your right reading ‘No unauthorised vehicles’.
9. At the top of the hill the lane bends sharp right. At this point continue straight ahead to pass through a gap onto footpath heading into the trees. Ignoring all the other paths to the left and right, continue straight ahead along this path. Eventually the path bends around to the right. Continue for a short distance to pass by a large metal gate and to a main road.
10. Cross straight over, pass by a large metal gate and then continue along a well laid path. Follow the path around This walk is for illustrative purposes only. If you’ve been glued to The Handmaid’s Tale on TV you may or may not know that it’s written by Canadian Margaret Atwood.
It’s no insult to say that Ms Atwood has been around for a while. She’s won numerous literary prizes and written more than 30 books - The Handmaid’s Tale was written nearly 20 years ago. But her latest novel, Hag-Seed, is as unlike Handmaid’s Tale as it could be. It’s brilliant fun, exuberant and fantastically entertaining. And, like Handmaid’s Tale, it’s a clever piece of work. Hag-Seed is loosely based on the story behind Shakespeare’s The Tempest; a tale of betrayal, plotting, mystery and revenge. But you don’t have to know the play or even like Shakespeare to love it, although reading the short explainer of the story of the Tempest at the end of the book will probably add to your enjoyment. In Ms Atwood’s take on The Tempest, Felix Phillips is at the height of his powers as the artistic director of a successful regional theatre festival when his weasely second-incommand connives to have him removed from post on the eve of his greatest OTT production – you guessed it - The Tempest. Felix’s revenge is the story of the book. Twelve years on from his humiliating sacking he’s running a theatre course at a nearby prison and gets his chance to trap the traitors who toppled him. It’s a funny and wry, imaginative and insightful tale and a great feel-good story. It’s also a superb example of how the ideas and emotions from a 400-year-old play can be totally relevant to today. Thereby hangs a tale.

Mike’s Musings Mike’s back, with his take on a subject more precarious than Donald Trump’s hairpiece in a hurricane… The Canadian-American problem. I’m not sure you can blame Hollywood for the Americanisation of Canada though, especially when you look at the list of actors/comedians who are from Canada (google it). Although frankly I thought most of them were American, so I guess the answer to Mike’s question is no! Incidentally one of my closest friends is a Geordie that moved to Canada about 10 years ago. Now there’s an interesting combination, not that he’s aware of it, or as he would put it: “Howay man what ye taakin aboot, eh?”.
Can you tell the difference between a Canadian and an American?
Well, the answer that is usually given is that those living north of the 49th Parallel, which forms much of the border between the two countries, are much more polite. There is more to it than that of course especially if you have a keen ear for accents. For example, your average Canadian has a distinctive way of saying words like out/about/shout etc. He/ she sounds just like a Derbyshire born and bred speaker suggesting that you’ll be lucky to get “….owt for nowt”. Next time you meet an English speaking North American, put that to the test. Mrs Gyles and myself spent a very enjoyable three weeks in Canada earlier this year and wherever we went we were made welcome. Whether in a bar (Mrs G does like her drink!) or restaurant, shopping, attending a sporting event or when driving, we came across a degree of courtesy and civility that we’d forgotten existed, and from our experience, is sadly missing from far too many Americans. They may be a minority - albeit sizeable - but you’ll recognise them as being the ones who take the view that Donald J Trump, for example, is a gentleman who exudes good manners. The one disappointment we had, and we did point this out to many Canadians. is that like us here in the UK, they are developing American customs and in danger of losing their identity. For goodness sake, they even drive on the wrong side of the road! By and large, they continue to spell words as we do but there is increasing evidence of words like colour, honour, favourite etc., beginning to lose the ‘u’. OK, in the grand scheme of things,
this might not be deemed important but the gradual development of common American customs and habits, when combined with the influence of Hollywood and other popular forms of entertainment, inevitably influences English speaking youngsters in Canada, UK and elsewhere in the world. Most Canadians are a) aware of this and b) want to fight it, but seem powerless to stop this seemingly relentless process. I came up with a potential solution and suggested that they put this to their elected representatives. Right now, as you read this, it is quite possible that Canadian parliamentarians are debating the merits of having a wall built along their border with the USA and making this high enough to not only prevent people from illegally crossing into Canada but to also stop radio and TV signals invading their airspace too. What’s more, as this general concept was first suggested by the President of the United States... they get Donald to pay for it. If this ever happens, and you never know, you heard it here first!

Not that British weather is ever predictable; but autumn can be warm, stormy or freezing, sometimes in the course of a couple of days. Being prepared is the name of the game, so you can move tender plants somewhere warm; bundle up larger exotics such as bananas or tree ferns if there’s sudden frosts; and start thinking about next year’s growing season. Lots of us have started growing more unusual plants, but the likes of citruses are unlikely to survive a British winter outside, though they will be fairly happy in temperatures down to about 10 centigrade, so if you’ve a slightly warm conservatory this may be the answer. Agaves also like to be frost free and dry in winter along with bougainvillea – more candidates for the conservatory. Young banana plants and tree ferns can be brought to the same place but if they’re larger outside versions you need to protect them before frost sets in. Pack the crown with straw, fleece or polystyrene making sure there is no damp debris trapped as this will encourage rotting. Also fleece the trunk and pot and make sure the crown has a waterproof cover to keep it dry. If there’s a patch of really warm weather you can open up the crown to allow a bit of air to circulate, but don’t forget to cover again if frost threatens. Meantime elsewhere in the garden put in your spring bedding – pansies, wallflowers and primulas for a bit of winter colour.

Some love the way it allows them to get closer to the players they idolise but others seem to use it as a way to vent their frustrations, without thinking of the people on the receiving end. Maybe it’s the anonymity that social media provides, as with road rage, that means people feel they can behave in a way they never would in public. Whatever your opinion, it’s here to stay, so how should clubs and players handle it?
Social media is becoming a bigger problem for football clubs and its growth shows no sign of slowing down. Nottingham Forest manager Mark Warburton, himself a Twitter user, guided a recent pre-match press conference towards discussing the perils of using it while at a football club. Warburton explained how much damage it can do especially to young players when they receive criticism from supporters and those with an axe to grind. Some may question why then footballers in this day and age would leave themselves open to such abuse and criticism. Clubs like their players to have a social media profile because in a game that is often regarded as being detached from the average person and reality, it gives fans the ability to get closer to those players they watch on a Saturday afternoon. For the majority, they treat players with the respect they deserve. But often it goes too far and like with most things it’s always the minority that spoil it. Unfortunately, it’s those individuals that grab the headlines and ensure people like me devote column inches to them. “It is how you deal with it. I am not sure how you prepare a player for a barrage of abuse on social media – and you do get that. You get the keyboard warriors who fire out the abuse.

“It is the minority, but they can have an impact, because the boys do read it. Some of the comments are cutting. You have to deal with it. You get used to it as you get older. But you recognise it and you talk to the players about it,” the Reds boss said. And when a player isn’t on social media, often a member of their family will be. In Derby County’s case, it was captain Richard Keogh. Not too long ago the Rams skipper was the subject of much ridicule from supporters and it was his wife, Charlie, who copped for a lot of online abuse directed through her to her husband. It’s bad enough that families should have to hear abuse to their loved ones at a game or even worse, in the street, but to see some of the vitriol aimed at them online must be soul destroying and deeply upsetting. Warburton’s comments were hugely interesting to hear and to get the perspective from one of the few managers who are active on Twitter, though the fact remains, it’s a situation to monitor with interest and maybe stronger action should be taken against those who hurl insults behind a keyboard. After all, it wouldn’t be tolerated in the street…
