Editor’s Message IT’S CCCHHHRRRIIISSSTTTMMMAAASSS!!! Well maybe not quite yet, but it soon will be and I’m mega excited. I love this time of year from the twelve drummers right through to the partridge and I’ll be making the most of it by visiting as many of the fantastic Christmas events, fairs and markets as I can.

A sweet challenge for care home staff and residents A local care home company mixed things up as residents and staff competed in a bake-off style challenge. Milford Care, which has five care homes in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, held the competition in time with National Baking Week. A team from each of its homes – Milford House, Spencer Grove in Belper, The Meadows in Alfreton, Hazelgrove in Hucknall and Ashbourne Lodge – baked a cake to reflect their home. The teams were led by the care home chefs at each home who joined forces with residents to come up with some tasty and creative cakes. The bake-off style competition was judged on Tuesday at The Meadows Care Home by Linda Singleton from the Derbyshire WI, Michelle Lowd from Luke Evans bakery and a guest panel of residents from each home. Linda said: “It’s wonderful that each cake has been tailored to the area and the residents home, rather than being just a regular baking competition it’s really about getting everyone involved.” The winning cake was made by the Ashbourne Lodge team who based it on a Shrovetide theme. Michelle Sanders manager of The Meadows Care Home, where the judging took place, said: “Everyone has produced amazing work and residents have put so much effort and thought into the bake off, it has been a really great event for all.”

Sam Palmer, HR manager at Milford Care, said: “This was such a fun event and it was great getting our residents involved in the baking experience and coming up with creative and imaginative ways of portraying their Homes.

Slimming World Recipe Classic Cheese & Onion Pie This month we have the perfect comfort food for the cold weather. A real treat and really easy to prepare and because it’s Slimming World it’s super satisfying. Enjoy!
Method:
1. Place the potatoes in a large saucepan with enough cold water to cover well. Bring to the boil, then lower the heat and simmer gently until tender when pierced with a skewer, about 20-25 minutes. 2. Meanwhile boil the carrots and green beans in a large saucepan of lightly salted boiling water for 3-4 minutes. Drain and set aside. 3. Spray a large non-stick frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and place over a medium-high heat. Add the onions and stir-fry for 10-12 minutes or until softened. 4. Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°F/Gas 6. Spray a medium-sized pie dish with low calorie cooking spray. 5. Drain the potatoes and mash until smooth, using a potato ricer if you have one. 6. In a small bowl, whisk together the eggs, dried parsley and cottage cheese. Add to the potatoes, stir to mix well and season to taste. Add the reserved vegetables and onion mixture to the potatoes and stir well again. 7. Transfer the mixture to the prepared dish and spread evenly. Sprinkle over the cheese and bake for about 35-45 minutes until golden. Sprinkle with the chopped parsley and serve immediately

Tracy Chevalier is probably best known for her bestselling novel Girl with a Pearl Earring, later also turned into a decent film. Most of her books have a historical base and her latest - At the Edge of the Orchard is no exception, this time set in the time of an American pioneer family. It’s hard to imagine quite how harsh conditions must have been in the inhospitable Black Swamp of Ohio, but the cider apples, which are just about the only thing which would grow, help to dull the pain. Tragically, lethally strong cider “applejack” also tears the Goodenough family apart, sending son Robert fleeing from the chaos of his half-crazy parents across America to goldrush California. It’s a rich and well-researched story, pulling no punches in its descriptions of the hardships of the settler life, and the poverty, bawdiness and wildness of the first settlers. People had to lose a lot to gain very little. And for every miner who hit gold there were dozens like the Goodenoughs barely surviving as they struggled to grow the 50 apple trees which would secure their land in the eyes of the government. But Chevalier is also very astute on the way we carry our childhood with us all our lives; on the pull of family no matter how dysfunctional and the importance of the idea of hope and renewal even at the worst of times. The book also touches on issues like the exploitation of nature for human greed and coincidentally, you get to learn an awful lot of interesting stuff about apples and the redwoods of California.

Rambles with Rafa This month we bring you a special walk from the Pentrich and South Wingfield Revolution Group. To commemorate the bicentenary of the Pentrich Revolution they have created a series of themed walks. We are proud to sponsor this walk along with Seals Fodder Room. If you want to find out more about the walks and the Pentrich Revolution please visit their fantastic website: www.pentrichrevolution.org.uk On 9th June 1817, over 300 men set out for Nottingham from villages on the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border. They thought they were part of a ‘general rising’ to bring down an unjust and oppressive government. Many joined the rising from the Swanwick area, where discontent among miners and framework knitters had already been expressed in Luddite activity and an active Hampden Club. The walk will also pass the interesting industrial heritage of the area.
4.5-mile circular walk from St Andrews Church, Swanwick
This walk should take you and your dog around 2 hours to complete. An undulating country walk on footpaths, lanes and roads. Care needed when crossing roads. There may be some uneven and muddy terrain, depending on the weather so please wear appropriate footwear. As always, follow the countryside code, keeping dogs on leads where appropriate.

Start: Andrew’s Church, Derby Road, Swanwick. Free car park across the road from St Andrew’s Church 1. From St Andrew’s Church walk down the road, The Green, (B6016) following the signs to the Conference Centre. Take the first turning to the right, Hayes Lane, and walk on, crossing the road to go up to the entrance to the Hayes Conference Centre. Here turn left, at the footpath sign, to follow the track up the hill.
In 1817 Swanwick was a village of miners or stocking framework knitters who faced poverty and hunger. Reputed to be a centre of Luddite activity, there was much support for reform of Parliament called for by the Hampden Club, meeting at the Queen’s Head in Alfreton. We follow the route taken by men from Swanwick and Alfreton as they marched towards Codnor. They included ‘secret committee’ men, Edward Haslam and James Barnes, who marched at the rear with his gun, William Elliott and George Rawson who had brought bullets they had cast, and Laban Taylor at whose home Jeremiah Brandreth had stayed on 6th June.
2. Passing Hilltop Mink Farm on the right, continue until the track turns sharply. Go straight ahead over the stile, to follow the sign to Golden Valley. Follow the footpath straight ahead down the hillside. Go under the railway line. After 100 yards, right under the 2nd underpass, walk on and cross the railway line. Immediately after the railway line take left fork up through the trees. You pass the Midland Railway and the former Swanwick Station. On your right you see the former Brittain Pit, a colliery opened by the Butterley Company in 1827 and closed in 1946.
3. Past the Brittain Pit turn right at the junction of paths (taking Amber Valley Route 4). After a few yards turn left to go down the hill to cross two stiles in the valley. BEWARE of the barbed wire on the stiles. Enter the field and follow the path up left along the hedge to reach the coach road at the former Toll Bar cottages. This area is Butterley Park. The rebels came this way visiting houses and farms to take men and weapons. The home of Harriet Marriot was visited and a gun taken. The rebels marched on from here to reach Codnor where the main rebel party waited.
The main body of marchers stopped here and demanded guns. The manager, Goodwin, and a few special constables refused to open the gates. Too weak to attack the Gatehouse the rebels left empty handed and marched on towards Codnor. Goodwin knew some of the men, who previously worked at Butterley, and gave evidence of their ‘character’ at the Derby Trials. See the plaque on the old Gate House of the works.
7. Cross the road with care and turn right. Enter the Midland Railway Centre on your left. Go through the building and turn right. After crossing beneath the railway bridge, at the signal box cross the track (with care) and take the marked footpath and bear left to cross a stile. Cross the field and bear right with Butterley Grange on your left and railway to the right. Continue ahead on the footpath and continue around Grange Farm and on up the hill towards The Hayes Conference Centre. In 1817 Butterley Grange was the home of John Wright, a partner of Outram and Jessop at the iron works. The Hayes built in 1860, now a conference centre, was a POW camp for German officers in WW2, made famous by the film, ‘The One That Got Away’, of the one successful escape by a German officer.
8. Passing the Conference Centre on your left you come back to Hilltop Mink Farm. Cross back over the stile on your left and turn right to return down the track to the entrance of Hayes Conference Centre and back into Swanwick. The march proved a tragedy for local men fleeing before soldiers at the Gilt Brook. Three from Swanwick and Alfreton were tried in Derby. German Buxton (31), miner, married with a daughter, originally from Wessington, was transported for life. Thomas Bettison (35), miner, transported for 14 years, as was Joseph Rawson (32) framework knitter. Among those arrested and imprisoned but later released were Anthony Elliott, John Hall and James Robinson.
4. Turn right along the Coach Road, until you reach the white house.
Below you is the tunnel of the Cromford Canal. From the now blocked tunnel in Golden Valley it continued under Butterley Park for 2,996 yards. It is the only tunnel of its kind in the world with an underground wharf, which served the Butterley works. This magnificent feat of engineering was built by the engineer William Jessop in 1794. See the remains of the two airshafts, each surrounded by an earth mound and trees, on the right of the road. Cavalry from the Chesterfield Troop of Yeomanry and pikemen waited here on 10th June to capture fleeing insurgents. Several hid in the Swanwick Woods but were captured and joined 28 others who were taken to Derby Gaol that night.
5. At the junction by the white house go straight ahead to pass the Police Headquarters on the left. Notice it says it is OK for authorised vehicles and pedestrians to go there. Butterley Hall, built in 1790, now within the Police HQ, was the home of Benjamin Outram, founder of the Butterley Iron works.
6. Turn right and walk down the road to Derby Road at Butterley. On your left you will see the site of Butterley Works and the Gatehouse.

Mike’s Musings A special Christmas Musing from Mike this month to put you in the festive spirit. Strangely enough reading it has me quite looking forward to Christmas but I’m sure weeks of walking around shops, hearing the same Christmas tunes on repeat will solve that. What’s more I definitely learnt something this month. Hands up if you’ve been singing Auld Langs Syne wrong all these years?
‘Tis the season to be............... grumpy!!
As regular readers of my page well know I am a fair minded, warm hearted, happy-go-lucky and generous individual. My main concern is a lack of tolerance, particularly from those who think that by constantly ranting and raving we can make the world a better place. In which case, you may be surprised to read that there are some things about the coming festive season that do ‘get me going’. 1 – why is it that, at 10.30pm on Christmas Eve, when I get round to wrapping Mrs G’s carefully selected presents, I always find that she has failed to leave an end of the roll of Sellotape sticking up? 2 – after eating a full Christmas dinner (always lovely ma petite chou if you happen to be reading this!!), and being temporarily transformed into a Henry VIII lookalike, why am I made to sit down for tea before I’ve finished washing up? It may be Christmas but............? 3 – no-one has ever explained to me just why it is that we have to be jolly at works Christmas ‘do’s’. We spend eleven months of the year putting up with that boring, foul mouthed bunch of reprobates working in the office next door but, come December, we’re expected to smile, talk civilly with them and give them big festive hugs. 4 – mulled wine. Just who came up with the idea that by adding sugar and spices and then.......... bringing the damned concoction to the boil, you made a perfect and smoothly satisfying glass of Pinot Noir, Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon a better drink? 5 – the past 20 years has seen a commercially driven rise in the sale of, for me, the dreaded ...............CHRISTMAS JUMPER!! I’m happy enough to dress up like a prat from January to November
but I do draw the line in the weeks leading up to the ‘big day’ when I’m actively encouraged to walk around wearing a multi-coloured jersey bearing slogans like Ring My Bell, Kiss Me – It’s Christmas or I Just Love Your Mince Pies. 6 – don’t get me going on pine needles. Why is it that, despite my weekly conscientious use of the vacuum cleaner, I still come across our tree’s ‘droppings’ in the most surprising of locations in July? 7 – the inability of 90% of the world’s population to correctly sing the words to Auld Lang Syne. It’s a long shot, but I’m hoping that the global spread of Voice Magazine readership will help everyone to remember that Rabbie Burns did not write the words ‘..........for the sake of auld lang syne’. OK, this may come as a bit of a surprise to some of you but, as you ‘see in’ 2018 (remember that’s twenty eighteen not two thousand & eighteen!), can you please omit the words ‘THE SAKE OF’. That’s it then folks, may I be one of first to wish you a grumpy Christmas and express the sincere hope that all your worst fears for the festive season prove groundless!

November is the best time for planting tulips to avoid tulip fire fungus which badly damages the plant. Most tulips prefer full sun, and dislike very wet conditions so if you’re planting into clay it’s a good idea to add compost or gravel to improve drainage. An easy way to get planting right is twice the width of the bulb apart, and two to three times the height of the bulb deep.
You can now safely cut back any perennials which flower before the end of June. Also take back peonies to ensure good growth next year. Leave other perennials until spring along with buddleia and clematis which may suffer die-back from hard frost if pruned early. If you’ve got loads of fallen leaves, use them to create leaf mould, great for adding to compost. Either create a wire enclosure and just pile them in or put them in bin bags and leave for about a year. Make holes in the bag so air (and bacteria) can get in and help them to rot down.

Remove any remaining fallen leaves from around the base of plants to prevent dratted slugs overwintering amongst them.

So why do so many make such short-sighted decisions? As we watch another turn of the managerial merry-go-round our Barry gives us his view on the long-term prospects of our local clubs and their managers…
The importance of stability should not be underestimated at three of our Football League clubs in these parts. In recent years, Derby County, Nottingham Forest and Notts County have all endured difficult periods that has seen a succession of managers come and go, along with changes in ownership and a sharp, prolonged fall from levels they believe that they should operate at. That does however, seem to be changing with a new air of optimism on the banks of the Trent and at Pride Park. Speaking to Gary Rowett a few weeks ago prior to the Rams’ 2-0 victory over their arch-rivals, the former Birmingham boss pleaded with the owners at Derby and Forest to afford both him and Mark Warburton time – a vanishing commodity in football. What he said was completely right, the two clubs have not been sustainable Premier League clubs for a very long time and won’t be all the time they change the manager like a monkey changes his nuts. It’s been 10 years for Rowett’s club and nigh on 20 for Forest, while Notts have been floating in and around League’s One and Two for a very long time, so the need for realism is important. That caveat to what Rowett said recently about wanting time and planning as if he’s going to be at the club for three years or more is that modern football generally doesn’t afford time. Already this season we’ve seen Frank de Boer depart Crystal Palace just four games into the Premier League season, Craig Shakespeare leave Leicester, Ronald Koeman at Everton and Simon Grayson at Sunderland, all before Halloween had passed.

Managers don’t get time, they don’t get the chance to build a dynasty, one that we saw Brian Clough do at Forest, Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United and Arsene Wenger at Arsenal or even Paul Tisdale at Exeter City. It’s to the club’s own detriment, though. Rowett inherited problems at Moor Farm, he took on a dressing room with too many controlling egos, and a club engulfed in failure after a succession of failed promotion attempts, while at the City Ground, Mark Warburton inherited a shambles. The club was on its knees, owned by a man with no idea of how to run a football club and a team devoid of fitness, confidence and identity – this all takes time to come back, certainly more than half a season and just one transfer window. Kevin Nolan has performed admirably at Meadow Lane coupled with the takeover by local businessman Alan Hardy, and he has the Magpies moving forward with a very realistic chance of earning promotion to League One come May. Forest and Derby may challenge at the top end of the Championship this season, they may not, but in Gary Rowett and Mark Warburton, they have two men who should be afforded the time to put the two clubs at either end of the Brian Clough Way back on the right track to success. They have to remove themselves from the managerial merry-go-round and believe in the project because it will in time, deliver progress.
