Editor’s Message So, summers gone... Well not quite yet and there’s still the hope of an Indian Summer; with lots of fun events coming up let’s keep our fingers crossed! Here at Voice HQ our thoughts begin to turn to the next set of holidays, with Halloween and Guy Fawkes night in our October edition and our bumper Christmas magazine just 2 editions away. So, if you have an event coming up or you want to promote your business during this busy period please get in touch as early as possible to make sure we can get you booked in. On a personal note, I’ve been a bit of a culture vulture this month with trips to see the Chapterhouse Theatre Company (see my review inside for more). I’d just like to say a special thankyou to the very kind woman at the Wind in the Willows who lent us some chairs to sit on. Things were starting to go a bit numb and it would have been a shame to let my lack of foresight ruin an otherwise very enjoyable evening. I’m a big fan of ‘random acts of kindness’ so I will be looking to pay it forward myself in the future. I’d like to thank everyone who has been sending in updates for the out and about this month. Things to do Sight Support Concert

Two of Derbyshire’s finest choirs are performing at a special concert to raise funds for a county charity which helps adults and children cope with sight loss. Songs for Sight takes place at Queen’s Hall, Derby, on Friday 29th September and features Bel Canto, a male voice chorus, and Ignite UK, a women’s four-part acapella harmony chorus. The event is raising money for Sight Support Derbyshire, which provides practical, emotional and social help for local blind and partially sighted people.

Book Review

Anyone who has been on holiday to the beautiful but often crowded hills and lakes of the Lake District recently might find it hard to imagine wolves being introduced into its deeper woods and valleys. But re-wilding the UK’s wilderness places is now starting to be talked about by environmentalists, bringing real nature back to wild areas which have been domesticated and unbalanced by farming and human sprawl. Sarah Hall’s novel The Wolf Border takes this idea as a starting point. Her wolf expert Rachel Caine returns from working on a reservation in Idaho, summoned by a wealthy Cumbrian landowner who wants to reintroduce wolves onto his estate. Public outrage follows. They’ll kill lambs, snatch babies, eat pets, run the protests. Power struggles. Political conniving. So far, so predictable. But this is really only the backdrop to this uplifting and beautifully written story. Rachel is herself slightly wild, or at least distanced from convention. And her freedom of mind is matched in this tale by the ruggedness of the Cumbrian countryside and the almost ethereal presence of the wolves, padding on silent paws through the night. This is a book which explores human loyalties, psychologies and prejudice alongside motherhood, sex and the wildness of humans, animals and landscape. There’s a profound sense of boundaries breaking down. It’s a clever, intelligent read which may have you reaching for her other books.

Slimming World Recipe

Fish & Chips Whether you like them with salt and vinegar, a side of peas (mushy or not), baked beans or even some curry sauce (recipe on the Slimming World website), Fish and chips at only two and a half syns are a must try. Why not give them a try?

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan/Gas 6. Place the cod fillets in a bowl, sprinkle over the lemon juice and season well. Leave to marinate for an hour. 2. Meanwhile, peel the potatoes and cut into thick chips. Bring a pan of water to the boil and cook the chips for 5 minutes. Drain and dry on kitchen paper. Return to the dry pan and shake to ‘rough up’ the edges. Transfer to a non-stick baking sheet, spray with low calorie cooking spray and season well. 3. Mix together the breadcrumbs, parsley and seasoning to taste. Lightly beat the eggs and place in a bowl. Dip each cod fillet into the egg mixture and then into the breadcrumbs mixture to coat evenly and place on a baking sheet sprayed with low calorie oil spray. 4. Place the chips in the oven and cook for 10 minutes. Add the fish and cook for a further 15-20 minutes. Divide between four plates and serve with tomato ketchup (1 Syn per level tbsp).

Chapterhouse Theatre Company This month we were lucky enough to get to see two of recent productions, Pride and Prejudice at the Pavilion Arts Centre in Buxton and Wind in the Willows at Bolsover Castle. Whilst they were very different, both were fantastic! Pride and Prejudice was a delight, cleverly conceived and superbly acted, whilst Wind in the Willows enchanted and amused in equal measure.

Chapterhouse Theatre Company’s

Chapterhouse are a touring theatre company who mostly perform in outdoor settings but also in some theatres. Each production is delivered by a small troupe of actors playing multiple roles, which they pull off with some style. This makes for a charming and enthralling experience and if you haven’t had chance to see one of their productions I would sincerely recommend you do. Chapterhouse aim to produce magical theatre in magical surroundings. The experience of watching theatre ‘under the stars’ is not one to be missed. One word of advice if you go to an outside performance – take a foldup chair or something similar to sit on and a tasty picnic or you may find yourself a little envious of those around you! With their summer season coming to an end the next opportunity to see them is A Christmas Carol at the Pavilion Arts Centre in Buxton on Thursday 23rd November at 7:30pm.

Rambles with Rafa This walk is a fantastic blend of different terrains, with woods, parks, fields and country lanes, with the occasional water spot if your dog is fond of the occasional paddle (or full blown swim like ours!) A longer walk which should take you and your dog around 4-5 hours to complete. There are some small uphill and downhill sections and wide range of terrains so please wear appropriate footwear. There are likely to be some farm animals so please keep dogs on leads where appropriate. There are also a couple of sections of road, so please take plenty of care.

Start: Shirebrook Miners Welfare Angling Club Car Park, Shirebrook Wood, Longster Lane, Sookholme. Notts. NG19 8LN 1. With your back to the car park entrance walk ahead to pass through a metal width restrictor. After a very short distance, ignoring the path to the right, continue ahead along a well laid path with a large pond on your left. 2. After some distance pass a second pond on your left and follow the path around to the left threading between two ponds. Then follow the path around to the right to pass 3 more ponds on your right and reach a T junction of paths. 3. Turn left at the T junction and pass through a metal width restrictor onto a lane. Turn left and continue for a long distance until reaching a road. Turn right along the road climbing gently uphill. At the top where the road bends around to the right, and immediately after passing a red post box on your left, continue straight ahead along a single-track tarmac lane. 4. Pass a small church on your left, a farm on the left and a house on the right. Then just prior to reaching ‘Herrings Farm’ on the left, turn left along a signposted bridleway. 5. Continue along the bridleway for some distance. Pass a marker post on your left and a path on your right. Continue along a farm track until reaching a road. 6. Turn right along the road and pass underneath a railway bridge. Immediately after the bridge and before reaching a pub on the left, turn left through a gap in a fence and continue through the pub car park. Pass a bridleway sign on your left then continue straight ahead to pass some terrace housing on your right. 7. After the last house pass a sign post on your left and then continue on a wide concrete path. Pass a farm on your right and a footpath on the left. At this point pass by a large metal gate and continue ahead along a farm track. 8. Continue until the farm track comes to an end and you have a marker post directly in front of you. Continue to climb uphill and then at a t junction turn right along a footpath. 9. Keep ahead for a long distance and eventually the path splits into two. Take the right split and make your way towards a nearby road. Cross the road and continue straight ahead going uphill along a signposted footpath. 10. Pass a yellow marker post on your right and continue with open views to your right. After some distance ignore a path to the right, continue with open views to your right and then begin to descend downhill. 11. At the bottom of the hill and just prior to reaching a marker post, turn right along a footpath going uphill. Then continue with open views to your right and trees on your left. At the top of the hill you will have a hedge directly in front of you. Go just to the right of the hedge and then continue straight ahead to cross an open field. 12. Pass a telegraph pole on your right and continue downhill to the far side of the field to pass through a gap in the hedge and then continue straight ahead to cross another open field. At the far side of this field pass through a second gap in a hedge and then cross a third field. 13. At the far side of the third field pass through a metal swing gate and then turn right along a road. Pass a church and a cottage on your right and continue until reaching a car park entrance on your right. Enter and cross the car park to pass through a gap on the far side onto a wide tarmac path.

14. Follow the tarmac path for some distance and then follow the path around to the left to pass a bungalow on the right. Pass another brick built building on the right and after a short distance turn right, pass through a chicane, and onto a signposted footpath. 15. Continue to cross an open field. When the path bears sharp right, turn left onto another footpath. Just prior to meeting a fence on your right turn sharp right and continue with a hedge on your left before passing through a gap in a hedge and cross an open field. 16. At the far side of the field and at a T junction of paths, turn left along a footpath signposted for ‘Warsop’. Pass a yellow marker post on your right and eventually cross over a river bridge. Shortly after the bridge you will reach a road. Continue along the road with open fields on your right and houses on your left. 17. After some distance take the 1st turning on the right into ‘The Hawthornes’. At the top of the hill and a T junction turn right along a road and continue straight ahead into a lane. 18. Continue along the lane for some distance and cross over a river bridge and then pass under a railway bridge and then eventually you will reach a road. Turn right onto the road and continue downhill. When the road bends sharp to the right take the lane on your left. 19. Follow the lane for a long distance until reaching a crossroads of paths with a width restrictor on either side of the lane. Turn right through the width restrictor then turn right again onto a well laid path. Continue straight ahead along the well laid path passing several ponds on your left. 20. When the path bears sharp left to pass between two ponds, continue straight ahead to walk past two more ponds on your left and around the final pond to return to the car park.

Mike’s Musings I’m starting to worry about Mike’s neighbours. When they’re not oversharing about operations they’re plotting mass murder and recruiting children to help! I am with Mike on the Americanisms though. The ones that get me are the unnecessary words, such as saying “already” or “period” at the end of a sentence. Still it could be worse they could start doing it with all punctuation then we’d have colons to deal with as well! So until next time… hv a ns day

It seems as if last month’s proposed solution to the problem of ‘middle lane hoggers’ has more support than I imagined. I’m especially grateful to one neighbour who suggested an alternative solution which would not only have the desired effect, but would also be a lot of fun to operate. Her idea was to have installed in the middle lane of all motorways, a concealed inflatable contraption containing the message ‘Move Over’. Once a week, local schoolchildren would be invited to take part in a competition whereby, under supervision, they would congregate on a bridge and using hand/eye co-ordination attempt to activate these. It would be a bit like a computer game, but with real life consequences, and the winner would be the child who gets most drivers to move back into the left hand lane. OK – it may be just a little bit silly but… it didn’t feel right to tell her that. ~ Part 6 - I predict that text speak, if it is allowed to continue, could bring about the end of civilisation. To those of you – admittedly not very many - who every year send a text on my birthday saying “Hi Mike - I think U R gr8,” this might seem strange. Well to cut a long story short, just think how the man in charge of North Korean nuclear bomb installations, might misinterpret the following message from his

wife about his journey home “No trams 2day – Xpress but on time.” OK – it’s a bit far-fetched, but you get the message. Solution – if I had my way!

Install in all electronic communication devices an app that decodes and translates the gibberish entered at one end to meaningful Queen’s English at the other.

Part 7 - Americanisation of our country. Just

think – how do YOU pronounce schedule? Why are we starting to use the American method of denoting calendar dates? For example why does 4th August 2017 (04/08/17) become 8th April (08/04/17) in the States? Why have we succumbed to Black Friday, Trick ‘n Treating, cup-cakes, allowed Mel Gibson to play William Wallace etc. We can’t blame it all on Donald Trump. Solution – if I had my way!

The beginning of autumn doesn’t mean the end of flowers in your garden. Most plants will keep going until first frosts, but you need to keep feeding, watering and deadheading them at least once or twice a week. With the real autumn stars like chrysanths, pare back now to make sure of a brilliant show into proper autumn weather.

Divide summer flowering perennials including grasses. Gently lift out of the ground with a fork. Small plants can be teased apart and planted individually, medium sized plants like hostas can be pulled apart in clumps and large plants can be separated by putting two forks back to back in the centre of the crown and waggling them about until they start to lever the roots apart, then breaking into plantable sections from that point. All should be replanted or potted on as soon as possible and keep them well watered. Many pelargoniums will be starting to go over now which means it’s the ideal time for taking cuttings which you can grow on your windowsill or frost-free greenhouse during the winter. Put the offcuts into a gritty compost. A bit of advice from plant expert Sarah Raven is to plant several around the edge of a medium sized pot which forces the root to put out more shoots as it grows down. Keep moist. When you have roots poking from the bottom of the pot, you’re ready to transfer into individual pots.

Top Tip!

When peas and beans are no longer producing cut them back to the ground but leave the roots in to enrich the soil with nitrogen as they rot down. Good for next year’s growing!

Love it or hate it, like many football fans I spend the summer months frantically checking the news and social media to find out the latest developments, hoping my club will that crucial signing. It’s a welcome distraction when there’s no international tournaments worth watching, but when the games start wouldn’t it be nice to forget all about transfers and just focus on the footy? Maybe a bit of common-sense might be finally being shown by the powers that be. Here’s our Barry’s take on it…

There are many things to thank FIFA for, and the current transfer window system is one of those. Having been introduced at the start of the 2002/2003 season, clubs have since been restricted to only completing purchases of players at certain times of the season. For the month of January and then between July 1 and August 31, clubs are currently permitted to make signings during those established periods, but it looks like that could be changing. For many of us, it’s probably appeared daft that you’d have the transfer window closing after the season has begun and finally, the powers that be are looking to change it and have it closed prior to the campaign beginning. The Premier League are to discuss the radical changes to the system at their next board meeting (later in September), while the Football League are set to follow suit. There is however, one problem that yours truly foresees. And that’s the line in the Premier League statement that suggests bringing it forward to the week before the big August kick-off. Now, unless I’m missing something, the Football League, 72 clubs and all, will have something to say about the closure of the transfer window being on the same weekend as they start their campaign begins. It was bad enough that the window closed on January 31 this year, the same night as a full round of Championship games which made things very difficult.

The Premier League has to find a way to make the system work, though not at the expense of the other clubs that form the bedrock of English football. I highly doubt we’d find ourselves in a situation whereby the top flight and Football League have two different dates, simply because it wouldn’t be practical nor would Sky Sports, who revel in the deadline day shenanigans, be happy about having two separate days to broadcast across, when they’ve barely got enough content to fill one. It’s a positive step forward, to look at moving the transfer window but there has to be a concern that the Premier League will try and railroad its way through. A sensible way forward would be to open it earlier than July 1, maybe bring it forward to June 1, in the immediate aftermath of the season finishing, as many clubs conduct business in the summer anyway, prior to it being officially open, and then close it on August 1. That would then give Football League clubs a few days to then focus on the opening weekend, and Premier League outfits the chance to spend a full week preparing for their new campaign. There is however, no doubt that the transfer window in some guise will be here to stay.
