Editor’s Message I’m a little worried… My friend Terry of the Alfreton Ramblers seems to have picked up the gauntlet on my ‘world’s fastest’ zip world challenge. Unfortunately, at the time of going to press Terry was texting me from a thunderstorm in the middle of Snowdon National Park. I hope you made it back Terry!

Hopefully Terry’s thunderstorm is not portentous of the weather as there are lots of fantastic events coming up. Our summertime specials continue in the Rafa’s Ramble this month with a wonderful walk around Bakewell in the Peak District. For all those that don’t know we now have a sister magazine the ‘Rural Voice’ that goes out to 10,000 homes in this area. It’s been hard work getting the magazine set up – not least as we have been hand delivering a lot of magazines ourselves as we get the distribution up and running. As a result I now have calf muscles like Popeye’s thanks to all the hills! Still at least the views are good. Thanks again for all your support. Slimming World Recipe Chipotle Steak with Sweet Potato Chips Don’t you just love sweet potato chips?! And the fact that they are a Free Food on Slimming World makes them taste all the better! This is a proper mouth-watering feast, continuing our series of summertime specials – Enjoy!
Method: 1. Cook the sweet potato chips in a saucepan of lightly salted boiling water over a high heat for 5-6 minutes or until just tender. Drain well and tip into a bowl then toss with a little seasoning and spray with low calorie cooking spray. 2. Put the red pepper and sweetcorn in another bowl, spray with low calorie cooking spray and set aside. 3. Mix the chipotle powder, paprika and garlic salt in a small bowl. Spray the steak on both sides with low calorie cooking spray and rub with the chipotle mixture to coat. 4. Place a large non-stick griddle pan over a high heat. When smoking hot, add the steak, red pepper and sweetcorn and cook for 2 minutes. Turn the steak and peppers over and shake the pan to move the sweetcorn. 5. Add the sweet potato chips and cook for a further 2-3 minutes, turning the vegetables frequently. Remove the steak from the pan and leave to rest for 1-2 minutes. Sprinkle the lime juice over the vegetables and shake the pan to coat well. 6. Put the steak and all the vegetables on a plate, scatter over the coriander and serve hot with a lime wedge.

Rambles with Rafa We continue our summertime specials by heading up into the Peak District for a fantastic walk that takes in some of the best of the gorgeous countryside on offer. Bakewell offers a perfect mid walk stop, whether it’s a picnic, pub lunch, or even a cheeky Bakewell tart! Standing on Church Lane with the church on your right hand side walk along the road, going uphill. Eventually the road turns into a lane. Continue, going uphill, for quite some distance until passing through a gap adjacent to a large metal gate. Continue ahead and after a very short distance pass a ‘public bridleway’ sign post on your right. Continue on the level for some distance before climbing uphill once more. Pass a bridleway marker post on your left at the top of the hill and continue with a wall on your left and a hedge on your right going downhill until passing through a gap adjacent to large metal gate. Immediately after the gate ignore the lane straight ahead and turn right along a lane heading downhill. After a very short distance ignore the footpath off to the right going uphill and continue downhill along the lane. After some distance pass through a large metal gate to continue along the lane. Further along pass through another large metal gate, through a farmyard with farm buildings on both sides and through another large metal gate. Continue along the lane passing through more large metal gates as you go. Eventually you will pass under an arch shape bridge and the lane becomes a road. Continue along the road for a long distance to begin to enter into Bakewell Town. After passing a large car park on your left you will reach a T junction of roads. Turn left and then after staying to the left of a war memorial turn left again to cross over a river bridge. Continue along a main road passing through Bakewell until turning left at a roundabout, signposted for ‘A6 Matlock. Continue along the main road passing a service station on your left and then a service station on your right. Shortly after the service station and immediately after ‘Haven B&B’ turn right into ‘Hollywell’. Continue along ‘Hollywell’ and then take the first right into ‘Park Road’. Continue along ‘Park Road’ and then take the first left onto ‘Park View’. Immediately after turning left into ‘Park View’ turn right through a small wooden swing gate, adjacent to a large wooden gate, onto a footpath. Continue uphill along the footpath to climb some steps, then passing a cemetery on your right. At the top of the hill and at a T junction of footpaths turn left. After a short distance pass by 2 large metal gates. Continue to cross a field keeping a stone wall and a fence on your left. Pass through a metal swing gate and continue with a wall on both sides. After some distance pass through a gap and continue with a wall on both sides going gently downhill past a barn keeping on the path to the left and ignoring any path to the right before passing through a gap adjacent to a large metal gate into a field. Pass a large metal gate on your left and then follow the footpath around to the right. Cross a field and then pass through a metal swing gate. Then continue steeply uphill and cross another field to pass through a wooden swing gate and continue to cross another field passing a telegraph pole. At the far side of this field pass through a gap in a wall and continue diagonal right heading for the top corner of the field to pass through a metal swing gate onto a road. Turn left continue to pass some buildings on your left and along the road for some distance, downhill then uphill. At the top of the hill and when the road bends sharp to the right, continue straight ahead to pass through a large metal gate onto a farm track. Continue ahead keeping a wall on your right for some distance, passing through a large metal gate and continue with a wall on your right. After some distance and just prior to reaching a large

metal gate and farm buildings, turn left. Now continue with a wall and the farm buildings on your right. After some distance pass through a large metal gate and continue ahead keeping a wall on your right until passing through a small wooden gate. Then continue with a wall on your right. Pass a four-way signpost on your right and continue downhill, signposted for ‘Haddon Hall’. Pass a marker post on your right and keeping a wall on your right to pass through a large wooden gate and continue downhill with a wall on your left. Pass through two more large wooden gates, a car park on your right to reach a road. Turn left for some distance. Just after passing a road sign reading ‘Haddon Hall car park 300yds’, at a gap in the wall turn right to climb over a stone wall to join a signposted footpath. Continue along the footpath to cross over a river bridge and continue, until eventually walking along the path with the river on your left. Continue for some distance until reaching a tarmac lane. Turn right along the lane heading uphill, eventually passing by a lane on your left. After a short distance follow the lane sharp around to the left, then continue uphill. After a short distance and just prior to a sign reading ‘No Public Right of Way’, turn right through a small wooden gate into a field. Cross the field uphill with a metal fence on your right to pass through a wooden gate at the top of the hill. Continue ahead with a metal fence on your right until passing through the wooden gate, then bear immediately left and gently uphill with a hedge on both sides. After a short distance the path widens into a lane. Continue uphill and after a short distance ignore a lane to the right. After walking on the level for a little while the lane descends and you will reach a T junction of lanes. Take the lane to the right going gently uphill for a short distance and then descend for a very long distance until reaching a main road. Turn left along the main road and continue straight ahead for some distance until reaching ‘Church Lane’ on your left. Turn left along Church Lane until reaching the church.

3 years Old Greyhound Freddy is very friendly and is great with people. He is not used to children however he would be fine be around older confident children. Freddy is fine with other dogs and travels well in the car. Freddy loves to have zoomies in an enclosed area and is very affectionate. Greyhounds make lovely pets even when they have been used for racing. They cannot live with small furries and Freddy has not lived in a house before. He will need to be introduced to all domestic things such as hoovers, stairs, carpet etc.

10 years Crossbreed I was found wandering the streets and brought here to Jerry Green Dog Rescue where I have a warm comfy bed, yummy food, and lots of cuddles from the team here but I still dream of finding my forever home. If you’re looking for an older, yet active chap please consider me, I really don’t act my age by any means. I still enjoy a good walk and playing with my toys. Then we can cuddle up together whilst watching your favourite TV program. I have met lots of new human friends while being at Jerry Green and enjoy being in their company. Everyone always says nice things about me. With my new friends we play fetch and they take me for nice walks. They say I walk really nicely on the lead making me really easy to manage. I do like walking with other dogs however I like to have all the attention so a home as an only pet would be ideal. I am deaf and partially sighted so it might be better if I lived in a home with older children who could understand this. Lots of the other dogs who came in after me have already gone to their forever homes, but I just get overlooked. Why doesn’t anybody want me? Please come and meet me and I know that you will fall in love me. I look forward to seeing you very soon. Robbie xx

Neil Gaiman has an amazing imagination. He writes fantasy; dark stories which are like fairytales with a good dose of realism, sweet and sour and full of demons and angels – or in the case of his novel American Gods; gods.
American Gods is part of a quartet written more than 15 years ago, but it was recently turned into a well sold TV video series which is why it’s started appearing in bookstores again. It’s a timeless story and like the best fantasy or horror it transcends the years. Gaiman himself describes the book as big (650 pages) and odd - a description you can’t disagree with. His America is a totally engrossing world made up of ordinary folk. But it is also driven by the remnants of the beliefs and gods brought to the new land by centuries of immigrants and which they largely abandoned once they found the new religion of things they could make and buy. If it sounds weird, it is a bit, but it’s grounded in the reality of a man named Shadow who is left without roots or hope after he is released from prison when his wife is killed in a car crash. He is offered a job by a stranger who has great charm but also seems to know far more than seems possible about quite a lot of things. Shadow soon finds out that there is quite a lot going on under the surface of everyday life in downtown America. Gaiman is an Englishman, now living in America and has won many awards. He’s collaborated with authors such as Terry Pratchett and has also written for TV and for children. American Gods is a dazzling piece of writing and definitely worth exploring.

Mike’s Musings Poor Mike – all he wants is a little understanding in this cruel world. I wouldn’t hold your breath! I have one of those cars that Mike talks about – with the automatic windscreen wipers and lights, so I assume when someone flashes me they’re just being friendly – If only the car told me which lane I should be in on the motorway ;)
Parts 5 of ‘Things that annoy all decent minded people’’ well…….me at least
Until the July edition of Voice was distributed, I thought I was the only man round these parts to have bravely undergone the ‘snip’ without so much as a ‘pat on the back’ from the missus. However, judging by the number of blokes who’ve stopped me on the street to relay graphic details of their own traumatic experiences, I am far from alone. In almost every case they had been instructed to have this done by ‘her indoors’ with a veiled threat of ‘or else!’ I’ll leave you to work out what that might have meant. I may be wasting my time here, but my message to ladies everywhere is that all we blokes expect is a little bit of sympathy and understanding for the ordeal that almost invariably you have insisted we go through. Here’s the next thing that ‘gets my goat’ ~ Part 5 - For years now I have ‘flashed’ at regular intervals. My wife is well aware of this and were she a Grumpy Grandma would probably include this as a key irritant on her own list. If the weather is inclement, or when dawn is breaking or twilight descending, I regularly flash drivers of vehicles who have forgotten to switch on their lights. I also indicate to overtaking drivers on the motorway - with a quick flash - that it is safe for them to pull back into the inside lane. Despite providing this public service I cannot understand why I’m regularly ignored... although I accept that you may be able to enlighten me.
Solution – if I had my way! Make it mandatory for car manufacturers to incorporate a feature which automatically switches on headlights whenever a) the wipers are activated or b) general visibility falls below a minimum level. I’m not sure, and I apologise in advance for my ignorance, but I think some cars may already have this as standard. Secondly, create a roving squad of Capital Punishment proponents who once a week, turn up unannounced at a suitable motorway location. Ensuring a highly visible presence and using the very best of military hardware, they exterminate every tenth middle lane hogger. It won’t take long for this very reasonable action to bring an end to this most irritating of selfish driving practices…… especially amongst the nine who realise they have just had a narrow escape. ~ Having mentioned motorways, how well do you know the service stations of the UK? We’re about to find out, as for this month’s little fun quiz, can you identify on which of our motorways, the following can be found? Gardener’s Calendar ~ August 2017 Take herb cuttings now and root in pots of well drained but moist compost - half grit, half compost - and grow on, ideally in a cold frame or on the patio. Then when the weather gets cooler you can bring them indoors to a windowsill to give you fresh herbs for winter. It’s not just tomatoes which like high potash tomato food. It works just as well on peppers, cucumber and aubergines. If you have alstroemerias in the border you can get a strong second flowering from them by pulling out stems which have gone over. This stimulates growth under the soil. Remember to stake them well when they start to show. Staking now is also important for the likes of rudbedkias and dahlias which are susceptible to the windier weather of autumn (when it arrives.)
Top Tip!
If you’ve a glut of soft fruit such as blackberries, blackcurrants or raspberries you can make always make jam, but it is just as good placing them on trays in the freezer for a couple of hours then bagging them up to use in the dark days of winter.

They buy their season tickets and sing songs for their heroes only see them sold for a sum of money that exceeds most lottery wins. I keep hearing that the transfer market ‘has gone mad’. Which I suppose is a bit like ‘the worlds gone mad’ or ‘elf and safety gone mad’ and it makes me wonder how we know what’s sane anymore. Fortunately we have our Barry to keep us right…
Selling your leading goalscorer with just three weeks until the new Championship season gets underway isn’t quite how Mark Warburton will have envisaged his pre-season preparations. The Nottingham Forest boss allowed Britt Assombalonga to move to the Reds’ Championship rivals Middlesbrough in a deal worth £15 million. Assombalonga is a rare breed and will be a big loss to Forest, of that, there is no doubt. The 24-year-old DR Congo star netted 14 times in a campaign of struggle at the City Ground last term and but for that collection of strikes Forest would be kicking off their season in League One. Strikers that have a natural instinct to score goals don’t come round too often and when they do, they cost a lot of money. Forest paid Peterborough a club record £5.5 million three years ago, and have now received a record transfer fee from Boro. This isn’t a sale that Forest had to push through, they were not under any financial pressure from new owner Evangelos Marinakis to let one of their key men leave the club, its one they were happy to initiate. Assombalonga recently changed his agent – to Michael Jarman. A man who had been hanging around previous owner Fawaz Al Hasawi like the proverbial bad smell. Jarman was one of too many hangers on that attached themselves to a naive and beleaguered Kuwaiti, during a time when Al Hasawi was clinging on to power, for what felt like their own gain - when the end was nigh. I’m not suggesting that Jarman encouraged Assombalonga to want to leave Forest, but he’s employed by a player to get him more money

and at Boro, with a potential £60,000 a week contract on the table, he’s done just that. Had Assombalonga remained with his previous advisor, things may well have been very different, though Warburton didn’t stand in his way – that was telling. This was however, a sale on Forest’s terms. The Reds hierarchy wanted him to go to a Premier League club and not a rival and that won’t come as much of a surprise. Given Assombalonga’s recent injury problems, and in fairness to him, with the horrendous knee problem he suffered – it would have been one to end a career not too long ago, it wasn’t a surprise that top flight clubs were not prepared to meet Forest’s valuation. Premier League clubs as a general rule don’t like to take risks on British talent that costs money if there are any injuries doubts surrounding them. Burnley would have had to fork out £15 million for a player that has history of suffering a catastrophic knee injury, it’s different in the Championship – Garry Monk rolled the dice and took the risk. Boro, albeit a league rival, activated Forest’s buy-out clause and the deal was done. The Reds were in control of the move, though. They got the figure they wanted and that money will be used to bridge the funding gap left by the previous owner, ensuring Forest fall within Financial Fair Play (FFP) guidelines, while also allowing Mark Warburton to invest in his squad. Times are changing at Forest and for once, you feel the club actually have a plan of how they are to move forward.
