Editor’s Message Soooo, the longest day has passed and we are in the throes of Summer (at least, I hope we are!). You may recall that I laid down a challenge to my friend Terry at Alfreton Ramblers at the beginning of the year regarding a certain zipwire. Well, I’ve only gone and done it!! It was 60 long seconds of speeds between 100 & 120mph over a quarry in the Snowdonia National Park and it was awesome! I told Terry all about it….I think it was the very fetching (and wipeable) outfits that swung it for him…..over to you Terry, send us some pics J

Whilst we were there, we also had a little trip up Snowdon and Rafa is super pleased as he has now ticked off 2 of the big 3! Although, he did seem to enjoy swimming in the Snowdon lakes a bit more than the climbing as we were all too slow for him! As Lisa & Laurence, the owners of Hilcote Country Club have been advertising in Voice Magazines for some time, I thought it was about time that I made a Sunday lunch reservation for myself and my lovely wife. We arrived at 1.45pm for pre lunch drinks, a pint of Pale Tale, which is brewed on site at the Moody Fox Brewing Company. A really refreshing light Ale with citrus flavours (5.4% ABV). We collected our carvery vouchers at the bar and were shown to our table in the huge dining room, with a log burner and a piano playing in the background, full of families enthusiastically tucking in to their Sunday Lunch. We waited until the queue at the carvery had died down a little and proceeded to fill our plates with meat, from a choice of Roast Beef, Lamb, Turkey, Pork and Gammon roast and creamy mashed potatoes, vegetables including cauliflower cheese, honey roast parsnips, leaks in cream & white wine source plus carrots, peas and cabbage, stuffing balls and a huge “Top Hat” Yorkshire pudding, all drizzled with lashings of real gravy. It really was a substantial meal even for those of you, who like me have a healthy appetite but of course the beauty of a carvery is that you can have as much or as little as you desire. And at less than £7 a head, it really is tremendous value for money considering the choice of succulent and juicy roasts and the array of freshly prepared vegetables. It is clear that the chefs and staff at The Hilcote Country Club take a great deal of care and pride in preparing a high standard of traditional fayre and we’re already looking forward to our next visit!

Slimming World Recipe Jerk Chicken Skewers Continuing the summer theme this recipe is perfect to have with a barbeque, to serve as a main dish with salad and rice or as finger food at a summer party. If you like the sound of this there’s plenty more recipes on the Slimming World website where you can also find your local group.
Serves 6 Ready in: 30 mins
Method: 1. Cut each chicken breast into six pieces and place into a bowl. 2. Add the remaining ingredients (except the chopped coriander and red chilli) and toss to mix well. Cover and chill in the fridge for 3-4 hours or overnight if time permits. 3. When ready to cook remove the chicken pieces from the marinade and place on a grill rack in a single layer. Cook under a preheated medium grill for 2-3 minutes on each side until cooked through. 4. We start off with a walk in Ashover that is perfect for enjoying the warmer weather in the Great British countryside. There are some great views on this walk and of course that means some uphill sections but they are well worth the effort! 5 mile circular walk from Ashover
A moderate length walk which should take you and your dog around 3 hours to complete. There are some significant uphill and downhill sections and range of terrains so please wear appropriate footwear. There are several stiles, with at least one being tricky for large dogs. There are also a couple of small sections of road, so as usual please take plenty of care.

Facing the church from the road, take the lane and signposted footpath to the left of the church. Continue straight ahead passing ‘Chantry House’ on your left, a stone wall and the church on your right. Pass ‘Delph Cottage’ on your left and just prior to reaching a large metal gate, bear slightly left to continue along a footpath with a hedge on your right and a fence on your left.

After a short distance pass through a gap and continue with a fence on your right and a wall on your left. Continue ahead and upon reaching a road turn left. Ignore the 1st signposted footpath on your right and just before the road bends to the left turn right onto a signposted footpath going downhill.

After a short distance continue straight ahead along a single track tarmac road passing a water treatment plant on your left. Continue until the road turns into a lane and then pass through a wooden gate into a field.

Pass immediately over a river and then ignoring a path to the left and a path bearing diagonal right continue straight ahead to go steeply uphill heading towards a marker post and a stone wall. Upon reaching the marker post you will notice it is signed for 2 paths; one to the left and one to the right. Follow the right hand arrow going steeply uphill towards another marker post. Upon reaching the 2nd marker post you will begin to climb some steps. At the very top of the steps, climb over a stile and into a field. Cross the field staying close to a stone wall on your right and then at the far side of the field climb over another stile onto a footpath, which may be tricky for some dogs.

Continue straight ahead along the footpath with a stone wall on your right. Continue for some distance until reaching a T junction with a lane. Turn left and continue for some distance until reaching another lane on your left. At this point turn right along a bridleway opposite the lane on the left.

Continue straight ahead with a stone wall on your left and right, then continue into some trees going gently uphill for some distance. Then when you enter a clearing pass through a gap in a fence and ignoring any paths bearing left or right to continue straight ahead going steep uphill.

At the top of the hill and at a marker post, ignore the path going steep uphill and sharp to the right. Continue straight ahead to descend for a short distance and as the footpath levels out. Continue until taking a signposted bridleway, turning sharp to the left and downhill.
9.
Continue along the bridleway, downhill with a stone wall on your right. Follow the path twisting and winding downhill and pass a tall chimney stack on your right. Continue to twist and wind downhill until passing a stone cottage on your right and then the path turns into a lane.
14. After a short distance and upon reaching a T junction of tarmac lanes turn right. After a short distance and just prior to reaching a road turn right to step over a low stone wall to continue along a footpath keeping a river on your left. 15. Continue ahead for some distance and then pass through a gap. Ignoring the path crossing over the river on your left, continue straight ahead keeping the river on your left. Continue until the path bears right and begins to move away from the river. After a short distance take the next path on your left. 16. Continue along this path for a short distance, pass through a gap and then thread between a pub on your left and a stone cottage on your right. Upon reaching a single track tarmac road, turn right and continue straight ahead along the road. 17. You will pass ‘Brookside Cottage’ and ‘Oakfield House on your right, and then a stone cottage on your left. Immediately after passing the stone cottage on your left follow the single track tarmac road around to the right and continue uphill. Continue until the road bends sharp left. At this point continue straight ahead along a footpath. 18. Continue uphill for some distance until crossing over a crossroads of footpaths. Continue ahead for some distance and then cross over a lane with a cattle grid and two stone pillars on your right. Continue for a short distance and then turn right along a signposted bridleway going downhill. 19. Continue downhill passing a footpath and marker post on your left to reach the bottom of the hill. Continue ahead to cross over a stone river bridge and then follow the path going uphill. Continue until you pass between some houses and to a road. Turn left along the road for a short distance and just prior to a road on your right, and opposite ‘The Old Poets Corner’ pub, turn right onto a signposted footpath going up a driveway towards some houses. 20. Pass the houses on your right and then pass to the left of a large wooden gate. After a very short distance turn left and pass through a small wooden gate into a field. Cross the field and at the far side pass through another small wooden gate and turn left onto a path with a wall on your right and a hedge on your left. Continue straight ahead along the path until reaching a road and the church.
10. Pass some farm buildings on your left and then after the lane levels out you turn left along a lane on your left and continue going gently uphill. After some distance you will pass a water treatment plant on your left and a short distance after continue, ignoring a signposted footpath on your left. 11. Just prior to reaching a large house on your right, turn right through a gap to join a signposted footpath. Continue ahead with a wall on your left and a fence on your right. After a short distance pass through another gap and then continue along the footpath passing through some trees. 12. Continue straight ahead for some distance until reaching a marker post on your right. Follow the arrow on the marker post straight ahead and continue to cross straight over a crossroads of footpaths, with a fence on both sides. 13. Continue for some distance crossing over two wooden footbridges and eventually passing between some houses. Whilst between the houses climb down some steps and then continue straight ahead and steep downhill along a tarmac lane.

Mike’s Musings This one is going to run and run. I think we all have a list like Mike’s. Personally I’m glad it’s not just me. Part 4 got me thinking about people taking pictures of their food. Not the one’s taking pics of a ‘special meal’ but those people who take pics of everything they eat – my solution, make them take a before and after picture as well – that would stop them!

Having had feedback from the June edition of Voice Magazine, it appears as if I’m not on my own. Did you know that one lady in our village actually divorced her first husband on the grounds of mental cruelty? Despite repeated warnings, he had continued to replace toilet rolls under... rather than over the holder. All I can say is he got what he deserved!

Right then, I’ve added two more gripes from my long list of ‘things that get my goat’

- Why do half of the world’s population - and you know who you are! – raise their collective feminine eyebrows to the sky when they hear a man say “I’m not feeling very well?” As an example, last week I picked up a particularly severe case of ‘jive knee’ at our dancing class. This followed a nasty bout of Cha Cha Cha induced migraine the previous week. Was there any sense of understanding or sympathy from the ladies present? Don’t bother answering! Solution – if I had my way!
Set up a Government funded research programme project to see if it is possible to recreate the acute pain and mental anguish experienced by those who have endured an NHS vasectomy. Yes lads – they’d change their minds then. Might even stop them going on about giving birth! ~
- Whilst having a meal, either at home or in a restaurant/café, why do a growing number of ‘diners’ feel the need to constantly refer to their phone/tablet etc? Are they bored? Are they shy? Are they introverted? Are they simply being rude? NB - only one of these suggestions is definitely right.
Introduce a law that states that in a dining situation, all electronic devices must be handed over to the oldest person present for safe keeping. Anyone failing to comply with this legal requirement - and prior to their arrest! - must either a) pay for the meal or b) do the washing up. ~ Someone recently reminded me that Snickers Bars used to be known as Marathon. That got me thinking! Do you know what the following are now known as? As usual, no prizes – just for fun. Tempting as it may be to just sit in the sun and enjoy the fruits of your hard work in the July garden, there are a few things to do when the odd cloud gets in the way. Given that bees generally seem to be having a hard time of things, it’s a good idea to put a few pollinators in the garden and it’s not too late to scatter some wildflower seeds if you’ve an underused patch of soil. They’ll come up really quickly. Bees also love herb plants, anything like mint or thyme or borage and if you’re thinking ahead to autumn fillers, dahlias are also a favourite with the buzzies. Keep on top of the deadheading and picking so your plants don’t run to seed and give up on the flowering part of their life cycle. With herbs such as basil, keep using them to stop bolting. Cut top growth out above a pair of leaves and they’ll keep producing . If we do have damp weather, put a circle of sharp grit down around your most vulnerable plants to discourage the slugs and snails. If you have problems with mildew on roses and plants such as calendula, water well during dry periods and remove some foliage to improve the air circulation through the plant.
Top Tip!
If you’ve got pots or containers where the compost has shrunk back from the sides in hot weather, pack some new compost down into the gap. This way water will soak in rather than run off.

They embody our hopes for the future whilst remaining relatively untainted by the finances of modern football. Often a product of the clubs academies these ‘local’ lads get raised quickly to the status of ‘the next’ whoever and judged accordingly. But clubs often see these young players as a way of balancing the books leaving the fans feeling betrayed. Here’s our Barry’s take on the contrasting positions of a couple of the next …
The tale of two youngsters. For too long, Nottingham Forest have been run in a shoddy, haphazard way and much to the detriment of their success – or distinct lack of it. It does however, feel like times are changing on the banks of the Trent under the new ownership of Evangelos Marinakis, the Greek shipping magnate and owner of Greek giants Olympiacos who bought the club in May from Kuwaiti flop Fawaz Al Hasawi. Mark Warburton has been given money to spend and possibly one of the biggest signings the former Rangers boss has made so far this summer was convincing teenage sensation Ben Brereton to pen a new long-term contract. Brereton, just 18, shot to prominence in the second half of the Championship campaign and will be away with the England under-19 squad at the European Championships in Georgia – a mark of his progress in a season that has been a shining light for his club. Forest may end up selling Brereton at some point – one suspects that if they remain a second tier club in the next two years or so, the financial pressure of not being in the Premier League coupled with Brereton’s own ambitions to play at the highest level may be too much to resist. What convincing him to sign a four-year-deal has done is given Forest some security and means that if they were to sell the former Stoke City frontman, the Reds would at least command a significant fee. There’s a chance, that in order to balance the books that were inherited in such a shoddy state by Marinakis and his team, he may still be sold this summer, though given his new contract it be hugely unlikely. Derby on the other hand, have managed to keep Will Hughes from the age of 11 until this summer. Reds fans have often looked on with a degree of

envy at the Rams fending off interest in the 22-yearold midfielder while they have seen young star after young star sold from under their noses. Hughes (at the time of writing), who was once playing in the Red of Forest, is set to complete a move to Watford and the Premier League, something that will frustrate Derby fans. Given that rumoured fees in the last year or so were in excess of £15 million, to accept a bid totalling around £7 million may rankle a little with them. Moves to Liverpool, Everton, Arsenal and more were mooted for the left-footed England under-21 man, so it feels a move, with all due respect, to Watford is a step down from what Hughes could have expected a year ago, even despite a season ravaged by injury. It is however, a sign of the times that for the majority of clubs in the second tier who don’t have the utterly absurd top flight parachute payments like Sunderland or Aston Villa, selling a player every now and then is a must. A necessity to bridge the funding gap and enable the club to strengthen in other areas. Forest themselves know all about the perils of falling foul of Financial Fair Play (FFP), having gone into a transfer embargo for a refusal to fall within the rules. What we think of FFP is largely irrelevant in the sense that it is here to stay for now and those rules set by the Football League must be adhered to. As the season draws nearer, it will be interesting to see what shape Warburton and Gary Rowett have their respective squads in come opening day. Unfortunately for Derby, that squad won’t include their bright young star.
