The garden party opens at 10am until 4pm and includes games, tombola and a variety of stalls. Refreshments, including lunches and afternoon teas, will be on sale. this year, to compliment the garden Party, there is an exhibition ~ tHe crAfteD gArDen ~ in the church. this will be open from 10am until 4pm each day from 24th June to 2nd July except sundays, when it will be open from 12 noon. The exhibition, which was inspired by a display at Ashbourne Methodist Church, comprises thousands of flowers and dozens of tableaux and arrangements hand crafted from a wide range of materials including wool, felt, ribbon, wire, paper and plastic. All the exhibits have been made by local people over last winter and have provided a reason to hold monthly get togethers to swap and develop ideas and socialise. Apart from getting the community to come together it is hoped that the exhibition will raise funds for the church. Admission is free and there will be light refreshments will be on sale throughout the exhibition.
To be held in the village hall next to church on Nottingham Road Somercotes on Saturday 3rd June from 10am to 12noon. Slimming World Recipe Country Style Potato Salad Summer has arrived! And with it alfresco dining, picnics, BBQs or just lunch in the garden. This dish is perfect for such occasions as a flavour packed meal in itself or it goes perfectly with grilled fish or meat. And don’t forget there’s plenty more recipes online or find out more at your local group! Serves 4 Ready in: 30-60 mins Syns per serving: 1 & 1/2
Ingredients: • 500g waxy new potatoes diced • 1½ tbsp. cider vinegar • 6 level tbsp. extra light mayo • 50g fat free natural fromage frais
Method:
• 200g very low fat or fat free natural cottage cheese
1. Boil the diced potatoes in salted water until cooked and then drain. Put them in a mixing bowl and sprinkle with the vinegar and leave to stand for 10 minutes
• Salt and pepper
2. Whisk together the mayonnaise, fromage frais and mustard and season well
• 4 plum tomatoes roughly chopped
3. Add the potatoes and rest of the ingredients and toss well until combined
• 3 hard-boiled eggs roughly chopped
• 1 level tsp Dijon mustard • 1 small red onion finely diced • 100g gherkins roughly chopped • 1 roasted red pepper diced
4. Cover and chill before serving
• 2 tbsp chopped fresh flat leaf parsley

Maybe you’re already familiar with Palterton and the surrounding area, along with the superb views on offer but this route starts you off somewhere a little different to the usual walks allowing you to take in some paths and views you may not have seen before. 6½ mile circular walk from Stockley Pond via Palterton
A moderate length walk which should take you and your dog, which should take around 2½-3 hours to complete. There are some uphill and downhill sections and the usual mix of terrains so make sure you wear appropriate footwear. There are also a couple of small sections of road, so as usual please take plenty of care.

From the car park head back through the car park entrance along Stockley Lane towards the main road. Turn right along the road until reaching a pelican crossing. Cross the road and then continue for a short distance taking the next road (Bramley Road) on your left. Continue uphill along Bramley Road. After a short distance take the 4th road on the left signposted for’ Bramley Vale Primary School’. At the very end of this road continue straight ahead along a footpath that threads between the houses signposted for Ault Hucknall, with a fence on your left and a wall on your right.
Pass a school on your left, then a short marker post on your left and then ignoring the path off to the left continue straight ahead with open views on your right and woodland on your left. After some distance pass close by a pylon on your right and then after a short distance cross straight over a crossroads of footpaths. Now begin to climb gently uphill moving away from the open views and going into the woodland. The path becomes steeper. Cross over a 2nd crossroads of footpaths then continue straight ahead for a short distance before following the path around to the left; pass through 2 marker posts and continue to climb. When the path levels out continue straight ahead with a steep drop to your left and a hedge on your right.
After some distance pass through a gap in the hedge on your right. Continue along the edge of a field with a hedge on your left. After a short distance you’ll reach a hedgerow in front of you. Go to the left of the hedge and now continue along a track with a hedge on your right. Upon reaching a road turn left to pass a church and a farm on your left. Continue until the road bends around to the left. At this point continue straight ahead along a footpath signposted for ‘Rowthorne’. (The left split of 2 paths). Cross an open field and then cross over a small footbridge and continue straight ahead to cross a second open field. At the far side pass through a wooden gate and onto a road.
Turn left along the road and then at a T junction of roads turn right. After a short distance turn left onto a signposted footpath and continue diagonal right across an open field. At the far side of the field pass through a gap and continue diagonal right across a 2nd open field.
12. Pass through the gate and turn left along a road. Continue along the road for some distance and then just prior to reaching a 7.5 ton weight limit sign turn right along ‘Main Street’ signposted for ‘Sutton Scarsdale’. After a short distance turn left and steep downhill along a footpath signposted for ‘Heath via Stockley Trail’. After a short distance continue diagonal left over a lane and then continue downhill along a signposted footpath.
13. After some distance cross a stile on your right into a field. Continue downhill to cross the open field and at the far side cross over another stile. Cross another field and then another stile. Pass immediately by a marker post on your right and then follow a farm track around to the left. After a short distance ignore the path straight ahead and follow the track around to the right and continue keeping a small bank and some trees on your right. 14. After some distance the track bears around to the right again. At this point continue straight ahead to cross an open field. Continue winding gently downhill, and then cross over a stile and onto a trail. Turn left along the trail for some distance, then cross a lane to continue straight along the trail. After some distance you will reach a road. Cross diagonal right to pass through a metal width restrictor and continue along the trail with a stream on your left.
15. Continue for some distance and then turn sharp left and cross over a bridge. Continue along the path and then follow the main path around to the right to cross another bridge. Immediately after the bridge turn sharp right, continue for a short distance and then turn sharp left to immediately cross over a crossroads of paths. 16. Continue straight ahead and then at a split in the track keep right, going uphill. Continue over the top of the hill and down the other side. At the bottom of the hill pass a small pond on your left and then continue straight uphill. 17. After a short distance the track turns into a tarmac lane. Pass through a metal width restrictor and then continue straight ahead on the tarmac lane. After a short distance pass by a metal gate and return to the car park.
At the far side of the field pass through a gap and then turn immediate right onto a tarmac footpath. After a very short distance follow the tarmac footpath sharp left and to a road. Turn left along the road and continue straight until the road bends sharp to the right. At this point continue straight on to a tarmac footpath.
Follow the tarmac footpath, reaching a fence in front of you. Then turn sharp left, down some steps to a road. Turn right for a short distance and then take the first road on the left called ‘Beck Lane’. Continue for a short distance and then take the first left onto ‘The Pinfold’. After a very short distance the road bends around to the left. At this point continue straight ahead onto a signposted tarmac footpath threading between two bungalows. After a short distance pass through a wooden gate into a field.
10. Continue straight ahead to pass some farm buildings on your right and then continue to cross an open field. Pass through a gap in a hedge and continue to cross a second open field. After some distance cross straight over a farm track and continue with a hedge on your left. 11. Continue straight ahead for a long distance with a steep bank to your left and open fields to your right. You will reach a hedge directly in front of you and a small wooden gate diagonally to your left. Ignore the small wooden gate and turn 90 degrees right to continue with the hedge on your left. After a very short distance turn 90 degrees to the left and continue along the edge of the field with the hedge on your left. Upon reaching a large wooden gate directly in front of you turn right and continue with the hedge on your left. After a short distance turn left and continue with the hedge on your left until reaching a small wooden gate.

Mike’s Musings I read this article about two days before going to the Theatre for an evening out and actually, although I hadn’t noticed it before… the slurpers and rustlers are really irritating. I’m not sure I share the same sentiment with the loo rolls but I have heard this gripe from copious amounts of other people previously!! #firstworldproblems… I do love a little quiz though!
Parts 1 & 2 of ‘Things that annoy all decent minded people’ well…….me at least
Part 1 - Can something please be done to stop people eating and drinking in the auditorium when they go to the cinema? There can surely be nothing more annoying in the entire so called civilised world that to have your concentration and enjoyment at the pictures spoiled by people slurping drinks, munching popcorn or crunching nachos. Solution – if I had my way!
Have an MPO (Munch Police Officer) allocated to each film on show with powers to a) eject the first to fall foul of Gyles’ Law and b) have the film stopped whilst any further offenders are publicly humiliated and made to stand in a specially reserved section of the foyer. PS – when did it become an essential feature of a night at the theatre (or attending a concert) that people had to have a drink with them? PPS – whilst we’re at it. Can someone please create an app that ensures that when a phone is used at a concert to either photograph or video record the artist(e)s on stage, the device spontaneously combusts? ~
Part 2 - when replacing a toilet roll, why can’t everyone please remember to fit the new roll in such a way as the paper comes over - and not under! - the wooden/plastic/ stainless steel roller? I know I’m one of many who get annoyed by this, particularly when the act is perpetrated by visitors to my house. Grrrrr! Solution – if I had my way! It is perhaps too late to change the habits of certain irritating adults. However, to help preserve the sanity of future generations we must introduce a programme of post ‘potty training’ education. This could be supplemented by asking teachers to carry out toilet spot checks at school and giving ‘stars’ to well-trained youngsters. ~ Talking, somewhat loosely (& reluctantly) about ‘comfort’ foods can you name the ten most popular chocolate bars – as defined by sales – in the UK in 2015? If you get more than five you can a) pat yourself on the back – yes I know that’s not easy – and treat yourself to a mouthful of Dairy Milk. Ooops – didn’t mean to say that. Gardener’s Calendar ~ June 2017 All your carefully frost-protected summer plants can go out in the garden now, just remember to keep them moist but not over-watered for the first couple of weeks. Also worth remembering that while many store-bought composts contain fertilizer which will get young plants off to a good start, it’s worth investing in a liquid feed to keep them at their best over the summer. Pinch out the tips of fuchsias and pelargoniums to create bushier plants. It’s tempting to let flowers develop quickly after you have spent so long getting them to this point; but you’ll get a better show all summer long if you take back existing flowering shoots now. When putting plants into their final position you’ll find pelargoniums and petunias love to be in full sun, whilst begonias, tobacco plant (nicotiana) and most forms of bizzy lizzies can stand quite a bit of shade. Might be a good idea to give them a week or so standing in sunshine just to get them going though.
Top Tip!
Cut back oriental poppies and blue geraniums hard after they’ve flowered and you’ll encourage new leaves and possibly new flowers later in the season.

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Nottingham Forest writer at the Nottingham Post Even in this era of ‘Modern Football’ as fans we still get very attached to the players who play for our clubs. Sometimes it’s their ability, sometimes it’s because of a particular moment, like a match winning goal against your biggest rivals, but some of the time it’s their character. Managers often talk about it and we all know when it’s missing from a team, so what value are the players who have it? This month Barry discusses one of those players…
It takes a rare breed of character to fight back from one serious knee injury; it takes an even stronger, more resilient one to battle back from two. And then you come across Chris Cohen. The Nottingham Forest stalwart who captained his side to a crushing 3-0 win over Ipswich Town that secured Championship survival, scoring with a sweet strike. This is man who has suffered three careerthreatening injuries. Cohen’s goal celebration was that of a man beset by emotion, running probably faster than he had ever done before towards the bench to jump into the arms of his team-mates. An outpouring of joy, relief and pride was painted all over Cohen’s face along with a degree of confusion about what happened next. The Reds leader then enjoyed a moment with physiotherapist Andy Hunt, a man so pivotal in keeping Cohen on the pitch after three of the most serious injuries a football could ever have. At the age of 30, Cohen has spent the last decade at the City Ground and has become something of a hero amongst Reds fans. Not because he’s led the club to any major honours or a place back in the Premier League, but because he cares; when he’s pulled that famous Garibaldi shirt over his neck and crossed the white line, he’s battled; he’s stood up to be counted giving his all, win lose or draw. Whenever things have not being going well at Forest, and let’s be fair, during Cohen’s decade on the banks of the Trent, that’s been for the majority of the time, the Norwich-born man has always been the one to stick his neck above the parapet and tell it as it is. Whether or not you agree with what he had to say on the state of the club, owner Fawaz Al Hasawi or anything else, he would never shirk nor hide away.

Cohen is also far removed from what many would paint as the stereotypical ‘modern day’ footballer and that’s probably another reason why fans and managers alike take to him quite so much. Without an agent, Cohen gave a very honest assessment recently about the weak position in which he’s been in for the last couple of seasons when it came to negotiating a new contract. For his part, Cohen made it clear that he wanted to stay and the amount of money he was paid was secondary at the very best – and this isn’t about sentiment. We’ve all got a degree of romance in us and God, we love a trier; somebody who would run through brick walls for our club though they maybe are not the best footballer – but we love them for their effort, desire and commitment. Yes, those things do apply to Cohen and in huge quantities. He’s also a very, very good footballer. Going forward and we’ve said it numerous times, there are reasons to be cheerful about the way in which Warburton is carrying out his business at the City Ground – the club just needed to stay up. They’ve done that, and yes, it was far too close for comfort but it’s done now and we can all look forward to what we hope will be a brighter future under new owners and a progressive manager who knows this division and knows exactly what he wants to make Forest a success. He’s got the bit between his teeth – he knows just what an opportunity he’s got to finally make this wonderful football club great again. Players like Cohen are the fabric of Forest for many reasons; ultimately because he’s a very good footballer at this level and if this club is to enjoy better times in the future, it’ll be fitting to have him play a key role in it.
