Editor’s Message Ok, so my sob story about my lack of Easter eggs did yield a small return from my mum and dad and the mad aunty and Rugby uncle. Still, beggars and choosers and all that but it does highlight the fact that I need to ramp up my sob stories… X-Factor style! I shall work on that in the coming months.

Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine

Thanks for everybody that entered last month’s competition. It closes on the 30th April, so the winners will be announced next month. Speaking of competition winners! You may remember that QS Solicitors ran a competition back in March for Easter and they’ve asked me to print the winners, so please see below: The raffle winners are: 1st – Mrs Lyttle from Leabrooks (a Hotel Chocolat egg) 2nd – Deborah from South Normanton (a Thorntons egg) The decorate an egg competition winners are as follows: Little winners were: Ruby Allard - Pinxton Nursery School Iris Maskrey - Client’s daughter Big winners were: Ella Nicholls - Leys Junior School Connor Vardy - Leys Junior School They all won chocolate eggs. With the latest news of the General Election being announced, Mike’s Musings are slightly more topical than originally intended. So I’m thinking of asking him to pick 6 random numbers next time I see him! In this currently turbulent world of violent attacks, lying politicians and unexpected turn of events, you know you can always rely on Voice Magazines to deliver each month and bring you some light-hearted amusement. *Please note this statement does not apply to Coopers Corner, who has just experienced a terrible Easter weekend, as have all Forest fans*!! Anyhoo, until next month, Happy Reading, Happy Reading,

Mandy’s Travel Page

Hi, I’m Mandy your Personal Travel Counsellor based in Alfreton. When I was asked if I would like to be one of the first passengers to sail onboard Princess Cruises brand new flag ship Majestic Princess, I didn’t hesitate, I was already mentally picking out my evening dress and shoes. On Friday 31st March Captain Dino Sagani took the helm of his brand new ship and we sailed out of his home town of Trieste with what looked like the whole of the town coming to wave us off. It was truly a Majestic sight with the daytime fireworks and the ships horn playing the theme from Love Boat, everyone onboard was ready for the sail away party in the glorious Italian sunshine. I was lucky enough to be on the ship for a total of 4 nights sailing from Trieste to Civitavecchia (Rome) this gave us two days at sea and a great day in Kotor, Montenegro. Dining is always one of the main things you think about when taking a cruise and the Majestic Princess will not disappoint. The World Fresh Marketplace (buffet) has you sampling food from around the World in one meal. She has the usual main restaurants as well as specialty dining, but I have to say relaxing by the pool watching the sun go down eating lobster and chips with a side of dim sum was a highlight for me. I don’t know about you, but I love a good stage show be it a full on Broadway production, great singers or acrobats. Majestic had them all, but the stand out show for me was FIERA performed by the Princess singers and dancers. Really what I am saying is WOW, this ship is amazing and Princess Cruises have an amazing product that you should try. Princess Cruises have built Majestic for the Chinese market, but she is the sister ship to Royal Princess and Regal Princess, so you don’t have to miss out. For more information on Princess Cruises or to make a booking please contact me. I am available 7 days a week to take your enquiries and 24/7 whilst you are away in the event of emergency. For all your travel needs please call me on 01773 318540 / 07939 587867 or email mandy.oldknow@travelcounsellors.com or find me on Facebook Mandy Oldknow Travel Counsellor Alfreton

Book Review

Sebastian Barry’s Days Without End tells a monumental story of the making of the American West, a time of civil war and the Indian wars. But Barry manages to do it through small lives and an unusual love story which is so tender that your heart is in your mouth all the way through in case something goes wrong. The tale follows two teenagers Thomas McNulty and “handsome” John Cole who sign up for the US army in the 1850s, scarcely knowing why they are fighting. They have both fled poor lives and face incredible hardship in battle and beyond. Some of the descriptions of the fighting are truly violent, but don’t be put off; the back story of their fight together for survival is worth the discomfort. It is a book which manages to be beautiful and brutal at the same time and which leaves you feeling unexpectedly good. It was 2016 Costa Book of the Year and the writing, apart from anything else is brilliant, deceptively simple written in a backwoods style, but with terrific pace and tension alongside gentle humour and real human understanding. Mr Barry pushes lots of boundaries. This is a memorable book which takes you forcefully to another time and place and at the end you feel that it wasn’t all about hardship and people fighting each other and their surroundings, but real people with a capacity to love and overcome.

Where to buy in Swanwick? Popular Streets: Ashton Close, Charnwood Close & Beaulieu Way – These streets located off Broadway offer a variety of terraced and semi-detached style houses. These property types prove popular with singles and small families. To maximise rental return from properties on these streets it is worth upgrading the electric storage heaters to gas central heating. Where to find value: New Street, South Street, High Street & The Green – The average property price in Swanwick is notably higher than neighbouring villages, however, value can still be found on certain streets. Properties on New Street, South Street, High Street and The Green have sold for as little as £62,000.00 (Rightmove – Sold House Prices). According to Zoopla estimates the average price paid for a terraced property in Swanwick in the last 5 years is £105,387, marketed properties on these streets can be purchased for below the average. (Zoopla – House Prices in Swanwick)

Whilst far from conclusive, I hope you have found this information useful. Have you found a potential property to buy? Present the property details to us and we would be delighted to provide a rental appraisal.

Dylan

1 year 6 months Lurcher Dylan is a Collie X Deerhound X Greyhound, he is great with all people and could live with children 7 years or older. He has also lived with cats previously too, he enjoys interacting with other dogs on his walks however we think Dylan prefers his own space in the home therefore couldn’t live with another dog. Dylan requires a patient owner who can help him with separation anxiety when being left on his own. He requires a home with company most of the time and will need provisions put in place when he is required to be left.

Missy

3 year old Crossbreed Missy has been around children from 4 years + and has had some contact with other dogs. Missy had puppies 3 months ago and this has elevated some stress when meeting new dogs. We feel that Missy would be better suited to being the only pet or co contact with other dogs. Missy had puppies 3 months ago and this has elevated some stress when meeting new dogs. We feel that Missy would be better suited to being the only pet or co-habiting with smaller dog. Missy has been clean and has been left alone for short periods. She is not used to travelling in the car and will need some reassurance.

Rambles with Rafa Denby is notable for a few things, apart from the pottery and being a good place for a walk it is also the birthplace of John Flamsteed, England’s first Astronomer Royal. By all accounts Flamsteed was a quite brilliant man, whose intelligence may only have been outdone by his inability to ‘get on with the other kids’ (including Edmund Halley, (of comet fame) and Issac Newton). There is a small exhibition dedicated to him, including a Stellearsphere showing the positions of the stars, at the Flamsteed Memorial park which is well worth the visit. Also well worth the effort is this lovely walk from the fantastic David Hallam of JH Legal who continues his charitable efforts with his 1000 mile challenge (#walk1000 miles), donations gratefully received at: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/David-Hallam6

6 mile circular walk near Denby Village

A reasonable length but fairly flat walk for you and your dog, which should take around 2½-3 hours to complete. There is the usual mix of terrains so make sure you wear appropriate footwear, especially if it’s been wet! There are also a couple of small sections of road, so as usual please take plenty of care.

1. What is conveyancing?

7. What is a property search and survey?

This is the legal process that involves the transfer of ownership of a home/land from the seller to buyer. This includes all the administrative work involved in transferring the ownership, including searches on the property. Your conveyancer will also be in touch with the sellers conveyancer to manage the steps from acceptance, exchange of contracts through to completion.

Your conveyancer will carry out property searches and advise about surveys which is an investigation in the property you are buying, your mortgage lender, and giving you as much information as possible about the property. The sole purpose of the property search and survey is to identify things which may be out of the ordinary, or required before you purchase the property such as a boiler service, structural, damp issues and more. Your conveyancer will also be able to tell you whether the property is listed or whether you would encounter any difficulties, and will advise the actions to take.

2. Who does my conveyancing? A conveyancer manages your conveyancing and they can be a solicitor, property lawyer or a licensed conveyancer. They will work on your behalf to find information about the background of the home, from the number of buyers and sellers involved in the process, to ultimately ensuring the legal title is transferred from the seller to the buyer. 3. How can a conveyancer help me? A conveyancer is a solicitor, property lawyer or licensed person who is legally trained to help you buy, sell and let your property. They can also clarify your rights in a leasehold and conduct property searches for you which is an important requirement when buying a property. 4. How much will it cost? The cost of a conveyancing service can vary depending on the value of the property and how much legal work is required. The average property conveyancing costs around ÂŁ850. Find out more about the services we can offer, with no obligation to proceed. 5. What should I look for when selecting a conveyancer? A good conveyancer will specialise in property work, keep you regularly updated, give you support, meet your exchange and completion dates, recommend the next steps, and be able to answer your questions with confidence. Our conveyancers will ensure we provide all these progress updates throughout, giving you regular property progress throughout each stage of the process. Consider a local legal expert who knows the area and will be able to provide the services to your door step. 6. At what stage do I need to appoint someone to do my conveyancing? If you are looking to buy, sell or looking to re-mortgage your property, you will need a qualified conveyancer to help you through the legal processes. You will also need to have appointed a reliable conveyancer if you are planning on making an offer on a property, as the estate agent will request these details from you.

01773 540 480

Searches and surveys are always carried out before the ‘exchange of contracts’ to give you an indication of whether your conveyancer will need to manage any property-related legal problems. 8. What happens when you reach completion? When you reach completion, your chosen conveyancer will manage all the steps involved in completing the process on your behalf. This will include the transfer of the funds for the property, and managing all the arrangements involved in tax returns, Stamp Duty Land Tax to HMRC, registering your name as the owner if you are buying and mortgage lender at Land Registry. 9. What will the conveyancer need from me? Your conveyancer will ask for your personal identification, details of the property, influences that may affect when you would like to exchange and complete, how you plan to pay for the property, mortgage application, plans to carry out work, purchasing with someone else, whether you are in a chain or own other residential properties. You may not be asked for all these details, however at some stage you may need to provide this information to ensure you can buy the property legally. 10. Do I need to use the mortgage lender recommended conveyancing solicitor? Many mortgage lenders have a panel of solicitors who they recommend. Always ask the question whether you are required to use their panel of solicitors or if you can source your own. You may find that the panel of solicitors recommended could work faster with your mortgage lender because of the business relationship. We recommend to all potential clients to research the conveyancing solicitor and ensure they are happy with their services prior to proceeding.

Mike’s Musings A bit political/topical but thought provoking all the same. Whether you agree or disagree with a second referendum, Mike raises some good points that scratches below the surface…. followed by another fun quiz to lighten the tone! ;-)

The Scottish Question?

If you know your British history you’ll be aware that for much of the 19th Century - and the early part of the next - the Irish Question was journalistic shorthand for a regular source of debate in Westminster. ‘Just what to do with the Irish?’ was a problem that remained unresolved for over 100 years, and if truth be known, remains an issue today, nearly 100 years after the creation of the Republic of Ireland. With a significant proportion of those living in Scotland seemingly unhappy at the prospect of having to leave the European Union on the strength of the UK Referendum in June 2016 and, as a result, agitating to ‘be a nation again’ do we now have the 21st Century equivalent, i.e. the Scottish Question. It’s not for me to argue the case one way or another but one thing does puzzle me. All of the London based political parties and written media outlets are consistent in arguing that it would be better, not only for Scotland but also for England, Northern Ireland and Wales that the Union remains intact. This time last year, whilst most MP’s were in favour of the UK remaining in the EU, the written press, by and large, persuaded us that we should leave, arguing that key issues included the right to selfdetermination and the regaining of control of the country’s destiny. Is this not exactly the same point those who favour Scottish independence are making?

One other thing has me confused. Newspapers make a great play of the fact that those living north of the Border have benefits not available to those in some other parts of the UK. The obvious examples are:• • • •

No student tuition fees Free prescriptions for all No bridge tolls Free parking at Scottish NHS hospitals

When coupled with the fact that there is a common perception that those living in Scotland receive, through the Barnet Formula, a disproportionate amount from the UK Exchequer, it makes me wonder why the Press (and all MP’s representing non Scottish constituencies) are not encouraging independence rather than trying to persuade our ‘friends in Scotland’ that ‘We’re Better Together!’ Do they know something that they’re not prepared to tell us? ~ Whilst thinking about the Scottish Question I’ve done a bit of research on football north of the Border and come up with a little quiz. There are no prizes – and I don’t want you googling the answers – so, just for fun, do you know in which towns the following Scottish clubs are located. Answers at bottom of page. Raith Rovers, Queen of the South, St Johnstone, Albion Rovers, Ross County, St Mirren, Hibernian, East Fife, Partick Thistle

Kirkaldy, Dumfries, Perth, Coatbridge, Dingwall, Paisley, Edinburgh, Methil, Glasgow

BEFORE

AFTER Call MIKE on: 0787 527 6886

You’ve scuffed the car, kerbed an alloy wheel, or some inconsiderate person has scratched and dented your car door and you are now fed up. An insurance claim seems over the top, and anyway your excess is quite high and it will ruin your no claims. Your local garage wants a fortune to repair it, and also want to keep the car for a week. You would be so happy if someone could just come along and fix it for a reasonable price without the inconvenience of losing your car. Well MDR PAINTTECHNICS can! We are Mobile Automotive Refinishers – in layman’s terms that means we carry out minor bodywork repairs quickly and conveniently at your home or work premises. In most cases we can provide a quote by e-mail or telephone and if it is more complicated we’ll come to you to provide a free estimate. All we need is a safe place to work and an electricity point and your car can be quickly repaired whilst you carry on with your life. Scuffs and scrapes, vandal scratches, alloy wheel repairs and small accident damage can all be fixed, often for less than your insurance excess and at a time and place convenient to you. We come to you to save you time and money.

Gardener’s Calendar ~ May 2017 Most areas should be fairly frost free by now, but if you’ve got half hardy annuals itching to go out into the garden and the forecast is uncertain, harden them off by leaving them outside during the day and taking them back under cover at night for about a week. And keep the fleece handy just in case. Any spring shrubs which have flowered such as currant should be cut back now to promote good flowering growth next year. Take them back to a good shoot further down the stem and cut about a quarter of old stems out completely. Creating more plants without spending more money has to be a good deal for any gardener. With soft stemmed perennials such as dianthus or penstemon take a healthy cutting about 4inches (10cm) long. Cut just below a set of leaves then carefully take away the two bottom sets of leaves. Insert the stem into compost, water and encase in a plastic bag. You can put several cuttings in one pot. You’ll find they have rooted in about ten days and can them be potted on or planted out.

Top Tip!

If you’re thinking about an alpine or rock garden, remember they like loads of drainage and a planting mix which is half and half compost and grit.

New Showroom for... I was lucky enough to attend the opening of the new Metro Bathrooms Showrooms at the beginning of April. Officially opened by Councillor Scott Walker, the Metro team have created a veritable bathroom wonderland tucked away just off Greenhill Lane in Riddings. The Alfreton shop is still open but the Riddings showroom is where you can see how to really bring your new bathroom to life. You are able to walk around live bathroom layouts, complete with working showers in some of the show areas, in order to visualise your own space. From here, the creative process begins and you can build your own bespoke bathroom all from this one-stopshop, including tiles, towel rails, lighting, taps and much more. If you are thinking of giving your bathroom a face lift, Metro Bathrooms has to be your ‘go to’ place! Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Nottingham Forest writer at the Nottingham Post The thing about odds of 1 in 5000 is that it means that the long shot sometimes wins (albeit very rarely). Well it feels like we’ve had a few major upsets in recent times and none more surprising then Leicester City’s title win. So is there something our other East Midlands clubs can learn from this success or is it a never-to-be-repeated occurrence? Our Barry gives us his take on the end of Leicester’s unreal run and the importance of creating the fertile ground for future success…

Leicester City’s fairytale two years may have come to an end following their exit from the Champions League, but it serves as a reminder what can be achieved when a club pulls together and unites as one. Going way back to the season before last when Nigel Pearson’s side produced a quite brilliant great escape to stay in the Premier League, winning six of their final eight games things have now gone full circle as they contemplate a campaign next term as nothing more than a Premier League side. That form wasn’t enough to keep Nottinghamborn Nigel Pearson in a job, however, with Italian and everyone’s favourite grandfather Claudio Ranieri taking over the reins City stormed to the Premier League title last season, winning it by 10 points. Forest’s former defender and Meadows man Wes Morgan, captained the side to the title and returned after injury in the second leg defeat against Atletico Madrid – and that’s a story that has gone relatively unnoticed. Coming from the Meadows, at a time when gun and gang crime was notorious in Nottingham, Morgan stepped away from those circles to forge a career for himself as a battering ram of a centre half; one that will keep for another day. Leicester’s achievements are remarkable and it’s unfair to compare them to what Brian Clough’s Forest managed in the late 1970s and 1980s because they’re markedly different and in vastly different eras. What the Foxes

have done is give hope to clubs up and down the country; given them a belief that the impossible may be possible even when the odds are 5000/1. An average group of players in real terms, a manager that had been around the houses and in the distant twilight of his career along with a fanbase that is nothing compared to the top clubs in England. Despite those factors, City defied everything to have a period in their history that their old and new fans alike will cherish forever – one that is extremely unlikely to be repeated. What it should do, is serve as a warning to clubs like Forest and Derby County, to show just what can be achieved with some logical thinking, sensible decisions and investing properly in the playing squad. With new owners on the horizon at the City Ground and Mel Morris still relatively new in at Pride Park Stadium, both clubs harbour hopes of one day following in the footsteps of the Foxes. In recent years, the East Midlands has almost been the forgotten corner of English football with the consistent failure of the Reds and Rams, though Leicester have helped raised the modern profile of the region. It’s an awfully long way off at the minute, but if Forest and Derby can join the Foxes back among England’s elite clubs then the East Midlands could well become a united football powerhouse once more.
