Sebastian Barry’s Days Without End tells a monumental story of the making of the American West, a time of civil war and the Indian wars. But Barry manages to do it through small lives and an unusual love story which is so tender that your heart is in your mouth all the way through in case something goes wrong. The tale follows two teenagers Thomas McNulty and “handsome” John Cole who sign up for the US army in the 1850s, scarcely knowing why they are fighting. They have both fled poor lives and face incredible hardship in battle and beyond. Some of the descriptions of the fighting are truly violent, but don’t be put off; the back story of their fight together for survival is worth the discomfort. It is a book which manages to be beautiful and brutal at the same time and which leaves you feeling unexpectedly good. It was 2016 Costa Book of the Year and the writing, apart from anything else is brilliant, deceptively simple written in a backwoods style, but with terrific pace and tension alongside gentle humour and real human understanding. Mr Barry pushes lots of boundaries. This is a memorable book which takes you forcefully to another time and place and at the end you feel that it wasn’t all about hardship and people fighting each other and their surroundings, but real people with a capacity to love and overcome.

Slimming World Recipe Chicken & Mediterranean Vegetable Quiche Last month Slimming World teamed up with the happy egg co. and asked readers of Slimming World Magazine to send in their favourite Free quiche recipe. Shirlene Hodgins from Lincoln sent in this egg-cellent chicken and Mediterranean vegetable recipe, bursting with sunshine flavours, perfect for the summer months.
Serves 4 Prep time: 10 Cook time: 50 minutes
Ready in: 30-60 mins SP Perfect for Extra Easy SP Syns per serving: FREE
Method:
1. Preheat your oven to 190°C/fan 170°F/gas 5. Meanwhile, spray a large frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a medium heat. Cook the chicken for 5 minutes. Then add the courgette, peppers, onions and cook for a further 10 minutes, until the chicken is browned. Transfer to a wide bowl and set aside. 2. Beat the eggs with the cottage cheese, quark, mustard powder, thyme and oregano. Season well. 3. Spread a round, ceramic deep pie dish (about 30cm across) with the tomato puree, add the tomatoes and season. 4. Put the chicken, peppers, courgettes and onions in the prepared dish and pour over the egg mixture. Bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes until almost set. 5. Remove from the oven and serve warm or at room temperature, cut into wedges.

He has also lived with cats previously too, he enjoys interacting with other dogs on his walks however we think Dylan prefers his own space in the home therefore couldn’t live with another dog. Dylan requires a patient owner who can help him with separation anxiety when being left on his own. He requires a home with company most of the time and will need provisions put in place when he is required to be left.

Rambles with Rafa Denby is notable for a few things, apart from the pottery and being a good place for a walk it is also the birthplace of John Flamsteed, England’s first Astronomer Royal. By all accounts Flamsteed was a quite brilliant man, whose intelligence may only have been outdone by his inability to ‘get on with the other kids’ (including Edmund Halley, (of comet fame) and Issac Newton). There is a small exhibition dedicated to him, including a Stellearsphere showing the positions of the stars, at the Flamsteed Memorial park which is well worth the visit. Also well worth the effort is this lovely walk from the fantastic David Hallam of JH Legal who continues his charitable efforts with his 1000 mile challenge (#walk1000 miles), donations gratefully received at: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/David-Hallam6

A reasonable length but fairly flat walk for you and your dog, which should take around 2½-3 hours to complete. There is the usual mix of terrains so make sure you wear appropriate footwear, especially if it’s been wet! There are also a couple of small sections of road, so as usual please take plenty of care.

Walk back through the car park entrance and cross the road diagonal left to continue along a signposted footpath between the church and the school. After a short distance pass through a metal gate and then continue for a short distance to pass through a wooden gate into a field. Continue straight ahead across the field and cross over a stream on a small wooden footbridge. Continue, going uphill and then pass through a small wooden gate adjacent to a large metal gate onto a tarmac lane. Continue straight ahead along the tarmac lane. At a house on your right hand side follow the lane around to the left and then continue ahead. Continue for some distance until reaching a signposted footpath on your left. Turn left on the footpath and then immediate left again through a large wooden gate and into a field. Head downhill along the edge of the field with the hedgerow on your right. Continue to the bottom of the field and then turn right to pass through a gap in a fence to cross into the next field. After passing a marker post on your right and continue straight ahead along the edge of the field keeping some trees on your left. Continue to the far side of the field and pass through a gap, adjacent to a metal gate, into some trees. Continue along a path through the trees for some distance then take the first path off to the right towards a large pond. At the pond bear left along a path with the pond on your right. After a very short distance pass some telegraph poles lying on their sides on your left. Continue straight ahead for some distance and then pass a second set of telegraph poles. Immediately after the poles bear left, up a short slope and back into the trees. Pass a large tree on your right and then after a very short distance turn left to pass through a gap in a fence. Cross over a stream and then continue along a path with a fence on both sides. Continue along this path, pass a house on your left and then continue until reaching a lane. Continue along the lane for some distance until reaching a road. Turn left along the road for some distance and then upon reaching Denby Cricket Club turn right through a wooden gate along a footpath signposted for ‘Denby Pottery’. Continue along the footpath, pass by the club house and a porter cabin on your left and then through some trees. Cross over a footbridge and through a wooden gate into a field. Continue straight ahead to cross the field. At the far side of the field cross over a stile then a footbridge and then continue uphill with a hedge on your right and trees on your left. Continue ahead and cross over a stile into a field. Continue ahead with a hedge on your right. After a short distance bear right staying close to the hedge on your right and continue along the edge of the field. At the far side of the field cross over a stile adjacent to a metal gate and then continue straight ahead along a farm track with a fence on both sides. Continue along the farm track for some distance passing a track off to the left and continue until the track begins to descend. At the bottom of the hill cross over a stile adjacent to a metal gate. After follow the track around to the left and pass through a small wooden gate adjacent to some large double metal gates. Continue ahead to pass through a gap and onto a main road. Cross the road and then turn left. Immediately, you will come to a road on your right. Cross this road passing through two posts in the central reservation and then continue straight ahead to take a footpath that leads into the trees running parallel to the main road. Continue with a fence on your left. A little further on you will continue with a fence on both sides. Continue ahead for some distance and then follow the path sharp right then after a short distance sharp left. Continue along the path to do a sharp right, and left again and then continue ahead until reaching a juncture of paths and drawing level with some stables off to your left. At this point take a footpath bearing off to the right. After a very short distance ignore another footpath on the right and continue straight ahead to cross over a small footbridge. Then continue along a well laid path with a hedge and open views to your left and trees on your right. Continue until the path widens and you have open views to your left and right. After some distance take a wide well laid path on your right. Continue ahead, gently uphill. Continue for some distance and then

follow the main path around to the right. Continue ahead towards a metal fence and an industrial building. Just prior to reaching the tall metal fence follow the path sharp right again. Continue with the fence on your left. After some distance follow the path sharp left and then continue with the fence on your left. Continue along this well laid path for some distance going gently downhill. Continue for some distance crossing over a crossroads of footpaths, cross a stream and pass through a gap in a fence. Continue along a path with a fence on both sides. After a short distance continue along a tarmac lane to pass some stables on your right and then a house on your left. Continue uphill along the lane to a main road. Turn right along the road passing Denby Potteries on your left. Continue along the main road and cross straight over the access road, then after a very short distance turn left onto a grassy footpath going uphill (not signposted) with a fence on both sides. Continue uphill and eventually follow the path sharp left. After a short distance follow the path sharp right and then continue uphill again until reaching the top of the hill to turn sharp left once more. Now continue ahead with a hedge on your right. After some distance pass a path on your left that goes downhill towards the potteries. A very short distance after the path on the left turn right through a wooden gate into a field. Continue ahead across the field staying close to a hedge on your left. Continue ahead for a short distance and then pass through a wooden gate in the hedge on your left. Then turn immediately right and now continue with the hedge on your right. After a short distance pass through another wooden gate, continue ahead with the hedge on your right. At the bottom of this field pass through a wooden gate, cross over a footbridge and through a second wooden gate. Now continue downhill with a fence on your left and trees on your right. Continue until passing through another wooden gate and then cross a field staying close to the trees on your right. At the far side of the field pass through a wooden gate and then turn left onto a well laid path. Follow the well laid path until reaching and passing through a metal width restrictor. (DOGS ON LEADS AT THIS POINT PLEASE). Continue until the path turns into a lane and then continue to a road. Turn left along the road and continue until reaching the car park.

Most areas should be fairly frost free by now, but if you’ve got half hardy annuals itching to go out into the garden and the forecast is uncertain, harden them off by leaving them outside during the day and taking them back under cover at night for about a week. And keep the fleece handy just in case. Any spring shrubs which have flowered such as currant should be cut back now to promote good flowering growth next year. Take them back to a good shoot further down the stem and cut about a quarter of old stems out completely. Creating more plants without spending more money has to be a good deal for any gardener. With soft stemmed perennials such as dianthus or penstemon take a healthy cutting about 4inches (10cm) long. Cut just below a set of leaves then carefully take away the two bottom sets of leaves. Insert the stem into compost, water and encase in a plastic bag. You can put several cuttings in one pot. You’ll find they have rooted in about ten days and can them be potted on or planted out.

If you’re thinking about an alpine or rock garden, remember they like loads of drainage and a planting mix which is half and half compost and grit.

The Scottish Question?
If you know your British history you’ll be aware that for much of the 19th Century - and the early part of the next - the Irish Question was journalistic shorthand for a regular source of debate in Westminster. ‘Just what to do with the Irish?’ was a problem that remained unresolved for over 100 years, and if truth be known, remains an issue today, nearly 100 years after the creation of the Republic of Ireland. With a significant proportion of those living in Scotland seemingly unhappy at the prospect of having to leave the European Union on the strength of the UK Referendum in June 2016 and, as a result, agitating to ‘be a nation again’ do we now have the 21st Century equivalent, i.e. the Scottish Question. It’s not for me to argue the case one way or another but one thing does puzzle me. All of the London based political parties and written media outlets are consistent in arguing that it would be better, not only for Scotland but also for England, Northern Ireland and Wales that the Union remains intact. This time last year, whilst most MP’s were in favour of the UK remaining in the EU, the written press, by and large, persuaded us that we should leave, arguing that key issues included the right to selfdetermination and the regaining of control of the country’s destiny. Is this not exactly the same point those who favour Scottish independence are making?
One other thing has me confused. Newspapers make a great play of the fact that those living north of the Border have benefits not available to those in some other parts of the UK. The obvious examples are:• • • •
No student tuition fees Free prescriptions for all No bridge tolls Free parking at Scottish NHS hospitals
When coupled with the fact that there is a common perception that those living in Scotland receive, through the Barnet Formula, a disproportionate amount from the UK Exchequer, it makes me wonder why the Press (and all MP’s representing non Scottish constituencies) are not encouraging independence rather than trying to persuade our ‘friends in Scotland’ that ‘We’re Better Together!’ Do they know something that they’re not prepared to tell us? ~ Whilst thinking about the Scottish Question I’ve done a bit of research on football north of the Border and come up with a little quiz. There are no prizes – and I don’t want you googling the answers – so, just for fun, do you know in which towns the following Scottish clubs are located. Answers at bottom of page. So is there something our other East Midlands clubs can learn from this success or is it a never-to-be-repeated occurrence? Our Barry gives us his take on the end of Leicester’s unreal run and the importance of creating the fertile ground for future success…
Leicester City’s fairytale two years may have come to an end following their exit from the Champions League, but it serves as a reminder what can be achieved when a club pulls together and unites as one. Going way back to the season before last when Nigel Pearson’s side produced a quite brilliant great escape to stay in the Premier League, winning six of their final eight games things have now gone full circle as they contemplate a campaign next term as nothing more than a Premier League side. That form wasn’t enough to keep Nottinghamborn Nigel Pearson in a job, however, with Italian and everyone’s favourite grandfather Claudio Ranieri taking over the reins City stormed to the Premier League title last season, winning it by 10 points. Forest’s former defender and Meadows man Wes Morgan, captained the side to the title and returned after injury in the second leg defeat against Atletico Madrid – and that’s a story that has gone relatively unnoticed. Coming from the Meadows, at a time when gun and gang crime was notorious in Nottingham, Morgan stepped away from those circles to forge a career for himself as a battering ram of a centre half; one that will keep for another day. Leicester’s achievements are remarkable and it’s unfair to compare them to what Brian Clough’s Forest managed in the late 1970s and 1980s because they’re markedly different and in vastly different eras. What the Foxes

have done is give hope to clubs up and down the country; given them a belief that the impossible may be possible even when the odds are 5000/1. An average group of players in real terms, a manager that had been around the houses and in the distant twilight of his career along with a fanbase that is nothing compared to the top clubs in England. Despite those factors, City defied everything to have a period in their history that their old and new fans alike will cherish forever – one that is extremely unlikely to be repeated. What it should do, is serve as a warning to clubs like Forest and Derby County, to show just what can be achieved with some logical thinking, sensible decisions and investing properly in the playing squad. With new owners on the horizon at the City Ground and Mel Morris still relatively new in at Pride Park Stadium, both clubs harbour hopes of one day following in the footsteps of the Foxes. In recent years, the East Midlands has almost been the forgotten corner of English football with the consistent failure of the Reds and Rams, though Leicester have helped raised the modern profile of the region. It’s an awfully long way off at the minute, but if Forest and Derby can join the Foxes back among England’s elite clubs then the East Midlands could well become a united football powerhouse once more.
