Editor’s Message So why does the Easter Bunny carry eggs? Firstly, they don’t have opposable digits to be able to carry anything. Secondly, chocolate is poisonous to animals. For that matter, have you ever seen a rabbit walk on its back legs without aid and for extended periods of time? The truth is the way in which chocolate is delivered to me, matters not…yippee chocolate fest. Here’s a sad truth though, as a woman in her thirties with no kids, I don’t receive Easter eggs anymore and it just doesn’t feel socially acceptable to buy a massive one from Tesco* just for yourself! (*other providers of Easter Eggs are available*). Back when I was a student and Woolworths was still a thing, me and the hubster (still only a potential suitor back then) used to wait until the day after Easter and hurry down there first thing (bear in mind it was a bus ride away and as students, we didn’t do mornings for anything really!) to buy all the reduced Easter eggs! We came back with arms full, much to the envy of my flat mates! Ah the good old days! Big news this month! Mike has brought forth his musings and very entertaining they are too. It’s a bit different to his predecessor but I’m loving his subject choices, next month is a cracker (in my humble). And just to clarify, my dad isn’t the ‘Mike’ in question, before anybody who knows me asks! This does not mean that you can’t still send in an article if you were thinking of doing so, please continue! I’d really like it if you got more involved this year and I’m hoping that this is the beginning of many more contributions. A big welcome to all our new advertisers. Hand on heart, we really do try and bring you the most reputable and reliable businesses in the area. I haven’t had many readers’ recommends recently and I know that you are using these people, so please let us and everyone else know what a great job they have done for you. It is a fact that people who have had a bad experience will tell 10 people about it and only maybe tell 1 if they have had a good experience. Now whilst it is important to warn people about the baddies, let’s shout about the goodies too, and there are lots of them! Hard for me to say but see you in May, yikes where is this year going?! Slimming World Recipe Egg, tomato and mushroom chip bake This month we bring you a really flexible dish; perfect for satisfying the appetite as an evening meal or as a weekend family brunch. So if you’re trying to lose weight or you just fancy a really tasty meal why not give this a try? And don’t forget there’s plenty more recipes online or find out more at your local group!
Method:
1. Preheat the oven to 220°C/Gas 7. 2. Place the chips in a saucepan of lightly salted boiling water and cook for 4-5 minutes. Drain thoroughly and place in a medium-sized shallow baking dish. Spray with Frylight and bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes. 3. Add the tomatoes and mushrooms to the chips and toss gently to mix. Season well and bake for another 15 minutes, turning occasionally. 4. Remove the baking dish from the oven and make four wells in the chip and vegetable mixture. Break an egg into each well, return the dish to the oven and cook for 5-6 minutes or until the eggs are cooked to your liking. 5. Garnish with the parsley and serve. 1960. Not yet the Beatles and the “swinging” Sixties. 1960 is at the height of the cold war against Russia, a few years after the scandal of spies Burgess and Maclean and with the Profumo affair, Russian naval attaches and Christine Keeler waiting just around the corner. In London a part time teacher buries a briefcase in trees at the bottom of a suburban garden, thinking that it is the only way to protect her family. Exposure by Helen Dunmore is a spy thriller. But more than that it is about betrayal, divided loyalties, impossible ideas of duty and love and what happens to ordinary people when their lives are overwhelmed by history. This is a book which makes you think. Not least what happens to children when they start to realise that their lives are not the stuff of toast and chestnuts by the fire or Enid Blyton’s Famous Five adventure books and that the best they can hope for is uncertainty. The story is written in a deceptively simple and subtle way, reflecting the buttoned down times but the observation of the detail, psychology and attitudes of the period make it a very emotionally satisfying story as well as a gripping read.

Mandy’s Travel Page Singapore, not just a stopover it is a destination in its own right. I was lucky enough to spend 3 nights in Singapore last month courtesy of Your Singapore and Holland America Cruise Line. To say I was excited would be an understatement. I have been in the travel industry for nearly 30 years, but have never travelled to Asia. I could go on and on about what a wonderful city Singapore is, but the page just isn’t big enough, so what I will do is tell you about a few of my favourite things. Gardens by the Bay What I was most excited to see were the Supertrees. By day they are pretty impressive as they range from 25 to 50 metres tall, but by night they come alive during the Garden Rhapsody light show. This part of Gardens by the Bay is free, unless you want to do something amazing, which is the OCBC skyway. You take a lift inside one of the Supertrees and walk along the aerial walkway at a height of 22 metres from tree to tree. The views across the gardens and Marina Bay are breathtaking. There is much more here than just the Supertrees though, Cloud Forest and the Flower Dome are just two of the other areas we visited. You could easily spend a full day at Gardens by the Bay and still not see it all. Raffles They say no trip to Singapore is complete without visiting Raffles. This beautiful colonial building right now is undergoing a major refurbishment, so certain areas are closed, but we still had a great time and took part in a Singapore Sling masterclass. I didn’t win, but I ended up with a great drink and a certificate to say I had taken part. I did struggle with the idea of throwing my peanut shells on the floor, but when in Singapore… Holland America MS Amsterdam MS Amsterdam the flagship of HAL was in port for a few days as part of her world cruise, so we were lucky enough to take a tour and have dinner in Pinnacle Grill, one of the specialty restaurants onboard. The ship is beautiful with rich colours throughout, the tradition of luxury cruising and fantastic service along with the modern technology are a perfect combination for any cruise passenger. I really didn’t want to get off. If you like the idea of a trip to Singapore as a city break or to visit as part of a bigger itinerary or even cruising from this wonderful city, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Rambles with Rafa Spring has sprung. I say that with confidence as at the time of writing I have seen daffodils and have been able to leave the house with less than arctic levels of clothing for the first time in months! I’ve even dusted down my walking boots, having been restricted to wellies for ages to cope with all the mud, not that Rafa or his playmate, Tilly minded much – as you can see in some of the pics! This is a lovely walk, which passes through Blidworth and near to Jerry Green Dog Rescue, who do great things to help re-home our furry friends. Standing in the car park with your back to the large information signboard, walk straight ahead to cross the car park to take a path towards the edge of the woodland. Once reaching the edge of the woodland turn right onto a well laid path and continue to walk with a hedge and open views to your left and woodland on your right. After a short distance you will begin to descend gently and then after a short distance you will reach a T junction of paths. Turn left and continue along a well laid path for a long distance. Eventually pass by a metal gate, through a small car park and to a road. Cross straight over the road and continue along a footpath threading through the trees. The path bears to the left and begins to run parallel with the road. After a short distance you will reach a crossroads of paths with a metal gate just prior to the road on your left. At this point turn right along a well laid path heading gently downhill. At the bottom of the hill follow the path around to the left, passing a marker post and a footpath on your right. A little further on follow the path around to the right passing over a crossroads of footpaths and then gently climbing uphill. After a short distance pass through a metal width restrictor and then continue straight ahead. After a short distance you will continue along the path with open views to your right and trees to your left. Continue along this path until reaching a T junction of paths. Turn right at the T junction and continue along this path for some distance until the path splits two ways. Ignore the left hand split heading uphill. Take the right hand split and follow this path for some distance until reaching a bench seat directly in front of you. At this point turn sharp left and follow a path steep uphill through some trees. At the top of the hill and at a T junction of paths, turn right and follow a well laid path straight ahead. After some distance follow the path around to the left and then continue straight ahead. After some distance the path bends around to the left a second time. Follow the path around to the left and then after a short distance bear right along a path heading gently uphill. Follow this path heading over the top of the hill and down the other side heading towards some industrial buildings. Before reaching the buildings and at a T junction of paths turn right along a well laid path. Continue straight along this path for some distance, pass by a metal gate and then continue straight ahead along a single track tarmac road. After some distance cross over a road bridge and then after a short distance turn sharp right to follow a path down to the road. Turn right along the road and continue for some distance. You will pass by a bus stop on the left hand side of the road. Continue straight ahead and just prior to reaching a bus stop on the right hand side of the road, turn left onto a signposted footpath passing to the right of a signboard for ‘Tippings Wood’. After a some distance pass through a gap adjacent to a metal gate and then turn right along a footpath keeping a signboard reading ‘Boundary Wood’ on your left. Continue along this well laid path for a long distance and then pass through a gap adjacent to a metal gate into a car park. Continue straight ahead across the car park and then onto a path passing through some trees. After a short distance you will climb some steps to reach a road. Turn left along the road. Continue to pass ‘Burma Road’ and the fire station on your left and then further on the co-operative food shop on your right. Immediately after the co-op shop you will reach a road on the right. Cross straight over this road, and take a tarmac footpath to the left of the post office After a short distance you will reach a road. Continue straight ahead and gently downhill going along ‘Meadow Road’. At the bottom of the hill continue straight ahead to pass through a wooden gate onto a signposted footpath. Continue with a hedge on both sides and then continue straight ahead to cross an open field. At the far side of the field you will reach a lane.
15. Turn left along the lane for a very short distance, and then turn right along a lane and signposted footpath. After a very short distance turn left, climb up some steps, over a wall and continue along a signposted footpath. Continue with a fence on your right and a hedge on your left. After some distance, climb over a stile, and onto a road. 16. Turn right along the road going gently uphill. Continue until the road bends sharp to the right. At this point continue straight ahead along a signposted footpath. After a very short distance pass through a wooden gate onto a main road. 17. Turn left along the main road and continue for a short distance until reaching a war memorial on your right hand side. At this point turn right, to pass the war memorial on your left and continue uphill along ‘Beck Lane’. Continue to the top of the hill and as you begin to descend continue straight ahead into a lane and signposted ‘byway’. 18. Continue along the lane for some distance with open views to the left and right. Upon reaching the beginning of some woodland on your left and just past a telegraph pole and metal gate on your left, turn left along a footpath. Now staying close to the hedge and open views to the left and keeping the woodland to your right continue straight ahead. 19. Continue staying close to the hedge on your left and when you reach a small clump of trees on your left, turn right along a footpath going gently uphill. Now continue heading directly into the woodland. 20. Continue over the brow of a hill and down the other side then over a second brow and down the other side. Then, ignoring the paths straight ahead and to the right, follow the path around to the left going uphill. Continue for a short distance with woodland on both sides. 21. Upon reaching a path to the right, continue straight ahead staying close to a hedge and open views to your left. Continue straight ahead for some distance ignoring two more paths to the right. Eventually you will reach a road. 22. Cross straight over the road and through a gap in the hedge. Turn immediately left and follow a path along the edge of the woodland running parallel with the road. Continue until passing a green sign on your left and then turn right along a lane heading back to the car park.

1year 7months – Mastiff x Labrador Trevor is a very large boy looking for an experienced home. He is a super friendly boy who is always wanting to greet everyone he sees with a non stop waggy tail. He does know some basic commands and will sit really nicely to earn a treat however he does need to continue with his basic training. Trevor is starting to learn to walk on a lead and does need some training to teach him how to walk calmly, we are currently walking him on a cani collar that he is responding very well to. He is a very strong boy who would need an active home that can manage his size and strength. Trevor lacks manners in the house and will need to learn how to settle calmly inside the home, while outside he needs lots of space to run around and burn off some energy. Trevor would be fine with another dog as long as their play style match and we would need to do multiple introductions. He can be full on and plays typically like a Mastiff and likes to wrestle! Due to Trevor’s size and boisterous nature he would need a home without children as he can be very clumsy and could accidently knock them over. He is housetrained and would be best suited to a home where he won’t be left home alone for too long as he will chew things that don’t belong to him.

1 year – Saluki Cross Sam is a very sweet boy who can initially be a little shy when meeting you for the first time but quickly wants to have lots of cuddles from you! Sam loves the company of other dogs and always wants to play with them. He is very respectful of them and happy to potter if that is what they prefer, but would love a friend hat he can play chase with. He would be happy to live with similar sized dogs but unfortunately would not suit a home with smaller pets.

Each year, Chapterhouse recreate some of literature’s best-loved classics for the stage, performed in the gardens of the country’s most treasured estates. Award-winning writer Laura Turner’s beautiful adaptations of the text go hand in hand with an English summer evening, where theatre goers are invited to bring along their rugs and picnic baskets for a wonderful evening of entertainment with family and friends. This year, Chapterhouse will be marking the 200th Anniversary of Jane Austen’s death with a revival production of Pride and Prejudice. There will be two chances to see this timeless tale on the Derbyshire doorstep this summer. Kedleston Hall will be playing host to one of the first performances of the season on Friday 16th June, followed by a traditional indoor performance at Pavilion Arts Centre on Wednesday 2nd August. There is also something for families to enjoy with a fun-filled production of The Wind in the Willows coming to Bolsover Castle on Wednesday 16th August. Alive with music and song, this magical family show is presented in beautiful traditional costume and features a woodland parade during the interval for everyone to join in with!

April is the month for planting hardy annuals seeds outside in the soil. This includes the like of marigolds, nigella, cornflower and nasturtiums which all take quite easily and herbs such as dill. If the ground seems a bit cold still, cover the patch for a few days with fleece or plastic before planting to warm it up and cover with fleece post sewing if the weather turns really cold again. Plant thinly in rows, so you do not have to thin out quite so drastically once seeds have taken. Water the row before planting, so you don’t displace the seed. Where you have planted seeds under cover, prick out into larger containers once the first proper leaf has formed. But don’t handle by the stems, use the top two leaves to transplant. Lily and other summer bulbs can go in now. Lilies should be planted about six inches deep and are ideal for pots so they can be moved around for scent and colour as needed. Add plenty of grit for drainage to the planting medium and remember that all parts of a lily are poisonous to cats. Fork the lawn to aerate grass roots. Sew patch grass seed on bald patches in the lawn and try to avoid walking on it until new grass is established. Feed established lawns with a high nitrogen fertiliser.

Mike’s Musings The king is dead, long live the king. Replace king with columnist and replace dead with gone and you’ll see what I mean. We asked for your contributions and you certainly haven’t let us down! Enter our latest contributor Mike Gyles, who brings us his own slant on life, the universe and everything. We debated calling it ‘Mike’s Mumbles’, but as this is the Voice we wanted to make sure he was heard, so welcome to Mike’s Musings. Take it away Mike…

“Let’s have a heated debate”
Isn’t it strange, and rather worrying, that it is often the most inconsequential of things that frustrate us and I’ll bet that I’m not alone when I share one of my frustrations with you. Let me ask you some questions that I’m fairly certain you’ll know the answer to.
1. When was the Battle of Hastings? 2. When did Queen Victoria die? 3. When did the 1st World War begin?
The answers, and there is no shame if you didn’t know because I’m only trying to make a point, are 1066, 1901, 1914. Now whether or not you got them right, have you mentally (or spoken out loud if you’re reading this on your own) said to yourself, Ten Sixty Six, Nineteen Oh One & Nineteen Fourteen? I certainly hope so! Next, and you should get these answers straightaway, firstly in what year in the 21st Century was the terrorist attack on New York’s Twin Towers and secondly, the year in which the UK Referendum on EU membership took place? Remarkably, it is nearly 16 years since we saw those dreadful scenes on 11th September 2001, and of course, the Referendum took place last year on 23rd June 2016.
Well, I can understand (and, up to a point, forgive) the first, although if we are to be consistent with the beginnings of previous centuries, it should really be spoken out loud as Twenty Oh One. As I’ve said, I can live with that, but when I hear people take the long winded way – and before you say anything I know a thing or two about long windedness! – instead of describing last year as Twenty Sixteen, I have to bite my tongue. Don’t they, and I realise that this might include you, not realise that they are using an extra syllable every time? Have they got sufficient breath that they can afford to needlessly waste some? My mantra is a simple one. Let’s all save a few syllables and protect the ozone layer. Having made the point, let me just test you, in what year did David Cameron become Prime Minister? Now that you know the harm you’re doing to the environment, I hope, with pride, that you loudly proclaimed Twenty Ten! ~ Talking of political leaders, got me to thinking of those who have led the Conservative Party. Can you, in your own good time and without tapping on your phone, name the last ten Tory leaders. NB – before you ask, they may not necessarily have been Prime Minister.
Now then, and this is what I’ve been leading up to, did you mentally say Two Thousand and One and Two Thousand and Sixteen? Theresa May, David Cameron, Michael Howard, Ian Duncan-Smith, William Hague, John Major, Margaret Thatcher, Ted Heath, Alec Douglas-Home & Harold Macmillan.
