Editor’s Message Here is the second edition of Rural Voice! I am celebrating this fact because who’d have thought that the Peaks were so hilly! As I’m sure you can imagine, due to the gap between Rural Trader finishing and us taking over, many of the previous distributors have found alternative sources of employment which left us with a bit of a conundrum! Thankfully for me, the team that is left is awesome! Which includes Wendy (Rural Trader Wendy!) and her husband, putting on their walking boots and delivering a big chunk for me. Jon, who delivered the magazines previously, has taken over the running of the distribution and got on the phone to his contacts to help us out. This still left me with 1400 magazines to deliver, so I had two great (although very painful) days out, one with my husband and another with my friend Maggi. Apart from the fact that everyone has lots of steps and lives on a big hill, it was fantastic. The weather was on our side mostly, Maggi and I had our lunch at Monsal head and my legs have never looked so toned! I really do love this area and I think I might bring the dog to help out next month! Don’t let me put off any budding distributors though, there are still plenty of rounds left and it is much cheaper than joining a gym! See our distributors advert for more information of the areas we need help with. On a separate note, Please do send in any events that you have coming up. The Rural Diary and What’s On section are both free of charge to charities and not for profit groups, but they are allocated on a first come first serve basis. As with my other magazines, registered charities can run an advert as well at a subsidised rate, so just get in touch for more information. We’ve had some great feedback so far and everyone we met on our travels was lovely, so I am very much looking forward to spending some more time here. Happy Reading,
Emily x

Method:
1. Preheat the oven to 220°C/Gas 7. 2. Place the chips in a saucepan of lightly salted boiling water and cook for 4-5 minutes. Drain thoroughly and place in a medium-sized shallow baking dish. Spray with Frylight and bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes. 3. Add the tomatoes and mushrooms to the chips and toss gently to mix. Season well and bake for another 15 minutes, turning occasionally. 4. Remove the baking dish from the oven and make four wells in the chip and vegetable mixture. Break an egg into each well, return the dish to the oven and cook for 5-6 minutes or until the eggs are cooked to your liking. 5. Garnish with the parsley and serve. Book Review
1960. Not yet the Beatles and the “swinging” Sixties. 1960 is at the height of the cold war against Russia, a few years after the scandal of spies Burgess and Maclean and with the Profumo affair, Russian naval attaches and Christine Keeler waiting just around the corner. In London a part time teacher buries a briefcase in trees at the bottom of a suburban garden, thinking that it is the only way to protect her family. Exposure by Helen Dunmore is a spy thriller. But more than that it is about betrayal, divided loyalties, impossible ideas of duty and love and what happens to ordinary people when their lives are overwhelmed by history. This is a book which makes you think. Not least what happens to children when they start to realise that their lives are not the stuff of toast and chestnuts by the fire or Enid Blyton’s Famous Five adventure books and that the best they can hope for is uncertainty. The story is written in a deceptively simple and subtle way, reflecting the buttoned down times but the observation of the detail, psychology and attitudes of the period make it a very emotionally satisfying story as well as a gripping read.

Competition Time! Win a family ticket to see...
PRIDE & PREJUDICE OR THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS
Each year, Chapterhouse recreate some of literature’s best-loved classics for the stage, performed in the gardens of the country’s most treasured estates. Award-winning writer Laura Turner’s beautiful adaptations of the text go hand in hand with an English summer evening, where theatre goers are invited to bring along their rugs and picnic baskets for a wonderful evening of entertainment with family and friends. This year, Chapterhouse will be marking the 200th Anniversary of Jane Austen’s death with a revival production of Pride and Prejudice. There will be two chances to see this timeless tale on the Derbyshire doorstep this summer. Kedleston Hall will be playing host to one of the first performances of the season on Friday 16th June, followed by a traditional indoor performance at Pavilion Arts Centre on Wednesday 2nd August. There is also something for families to enjoy with a fun-filled production of The Wind in the Willows coming to Bolsover Castle on Wednesday 16th August. Alive with music and song, this magical family show is presented in beautiful traditional costume and features a woodland parade during the interval for everyone to join in with!
Voice magazines have 3 sets of family tickets to giveaway, one for each of the shows.
To be in with a chance of winning simply tell me in what year Jane Austen died? Send your answer to emily@voicemagazines.co.uk by 30th April 2017.

Gardener’s Calendar ~ April 2017 April is the month for planting hardy annuals seeds outside in the soil. This includes the like of marigolds, nigella, cornflower and nasturtiums which all take quite easily and herbs such as dill. If the ground seems a bit cold still, cover the patch for a few days with fleece or plastic before planting to warm it up and cover with fleece post sewing if the weather turns really cold again. Plant thinly in rows, so you do not have to thin out quite so drastically once seeds have taken. Water the row before planting, so you don’t displace the seed. Where you have planted seeds under cover, prick out into larger containers once the first proper leaf has formed. But don’t handle by the stems, use the top two leaves to transplant. Lily and other summer bulbs can go in now. Lilies should be planted about six inches deep and are ideal for pots so they can be moved around for scent and colour as needed. Add plenty of grit for drainage to the planting medium and remember that all parts of a lily are poisonous to cats. Fork the lawn to aerate grass roots. Sew patch grass seed on bald patches in the lawn and try to avoid walking on it until new grass is established. Feed established lawns with a high nitrogen fertiliser.
Top Tip!
Place supports for taller plants now. If you leave it later you risk damaging the roots and growing points.

TRAIDCRAFT
totalled £641 helped by £166 at the Baslow Hunger Lunch and £34 at the Oxfam Ceiledh. Sales last month
When Traidcraft first began in 1979, Fairtrade was not even a word let alone a concept or a reality. Thanks to Traidcraft, Oxfam and Christian Aid, the Fairtrade Foundation was set up in the early 90’s and has now grown to a billion pound enterprise. The Fairtrade logo is the best known in the UK, and is given to those producers who fulfil the necessary criteria by paying fair wages, providing good working conditions, and the sort of benefits, such as sick and holiday pay which we take for granted. However there are still many millions of people living in poverty. Traidcraft has always been more than just the UK’s leading Fairtrade organisation. Our priority is more than just promoting Fairtrade. It’s about helping people, and that includes all of us, to understand the difference between what big companies’ do - which is fair enough and what Traidcraft does - which is better than fair. We aim to give - and we do give - more than just support. We give particular help to smaller, more marginalised producers, helping them to work together to achieve self sufficiency and to grow, not just financially, but in confidence and ability, free from the debilitating effects of poverty.
