Editor’s Message A very warm welcome to the new Rural Voice Magazine! As you may or not be aware, we have taken over from Rural Trader and will be arriving on your doorstep each month from now on.

Rural Trader had been delivering the latest businesses and local news to your home for the last 9 years and they delivered their last edition at Christmas. I’m sure that you’ll agree, Wendy & Phyl did a fantastic job and we hope to be able to fill the void that they have left. A little about us; We currently have 3 magazines going out to 15,000 homes around the J28 area of Derbyshire. We have been up and running for 7 years now and we are passionate about bringing the best local news and advertisers together into one handy booklet, that is affordable and cost effective for all, irrespective of your budget. Although we have a broad support team, most contact will be through myself and my colleague David. We have lots of plans going forward with regards to competitions, information and local interest articles. Slimming World Recipe
Coconut macaroons So we are pretty much in Spring and that beach ready body is calling but we still haven’t shaken off the winter blues yet. So these little sweet pick-me-ups are a real treat to have handy when the craving takes hold!
Method:
1. Beat the egg whites until frothy (Make sure no yolk whatsoever has contaminated the egg whites, otherwise you could be whisking for ever!) 2. Add the sugar and beat until stiff. 3. Fold in the coconut, put mixture into a piping bag with a star nozzle and pipe 30 macaroons onto a parchment covered baking sheet. 4. Bake for 30 minutes in a preheated oven (170ºC/150ºC Fan/Gas Mark 3). 5. Remove from oven, and allow to cool for a few minutes before removing them from the baking sheet. Improvising concert violinist Tim Kliphuis is making now waves in Holland with his Sextet programme “The Art of Improvisation”. His Trio is joined by three world class chamber musicians in a profoundly moving concert featuring the music of Duke Ellington, Richard Strauss, Aaron Copland and much more. Book Review
Golden Hill by Francis Spufford is a joy. Clever, funny, sharp and tantalising, it crackles along with a witty, fast-talking young rake as its central character and an exploration of the early days of Manhattan as you’ve never imagined it. Mr Smith, fresh off the boat from London in 1746, “hot foot from the cold sea” with a fortune in tow, is a mystery to all who meet him, including the reader, and sometimes it seems even to himself. Can he be trusted? Is he just a handsome, charming chancer? We don’t get to find out, or why he’s even there, till the very end of the book. The style of writing is old fashioned, but in a knowing 21st century way. It never slows the pace and the undoubtedly accurate historical descriptions enhance the exuberance of the tale, reminding us that New Amsterdam, even in those days, was the home of sharks and jets, entrepreneurs, villains and heroes, most of them seeking a better future. Mr Spufford has written highly praised non-fiction up till now - science, history, politics - though as he admits all his books have had an element of fiction about them. This time his research is worn more lightly, but one of the delights is knowing that the descriptions of time and place offer you a time machine into New York when it was the undoubtedly little sister of a metropolis like London. Definitely different and great fun.

Like I say, it’s the little things… And it’s things like this that remind me the world isn’t just a bunch of self-centred Donald Trumps, so give it a go, couldn’t we all do with a warm feeling from doing something good!

Gardener’s Calendar ~ March 2017 Some remnants of winter this month, but plenty to do for the coming spring.
Small pots of snowdrops are pretty expensive in nurseries as you’ll probably know, but growing next year’s supplies yourself is easy if you wait till this year’s crop have finished flowering and lift, divide and replant clumps while they’ve still got good healthy green leaves – known as planting in the green. If some of your daffs have been “blind” or non-flowering this year, chances are they could do with a good feed – once a month until their leaves die down (not knotting the leaves) or that they’re overcrowded, in which case lift and replant. Bare root plants should go into the ground before the end of March so the tiny roots they need to grow, get a chance to spread before top growth starts. Top dress containers by removing the top two inches of compost – you don’t need to re-pot entirely every year. If you’re thinking of re-invigorating container plants which were looking a bit tired last year, carefully remove them from the pot as soon as they start showing growth and replace around a third of the compost in the pot, particularly around the roots of the plant.
