Editor’s Message Spring is springing, evenings are getting lighter and the weather is getting milder (although at the time of writing, storm Doris is about to create havoc?!)… we’ve waited a long time for this but good times are ahead of us!

Speaking of growth spurts, ours continues this month having just launched our 4th magazine in the Bakewell area, called ‘Rural Voice’. That is now 25,000 homes that we land on the doorsteps of! Lots of tears and struggles to get all this together this month but we are looking forward to a new member of staff joining us soon!! In the vein of new things; as you know Gary stood down last month as our resident grumbler and I asked for people to send in their ideas for contributions... to say we had a few is an understatement. However, the wonderful Gillian stepped in this month and told us all about the Morsbag initiative. It was really lovely to walk in one day and have a package on my desk, open it and see my very own bag made by Gillian with all the article info in. If creating one of these and gifting it to someone puts a smile of their face too... it really is a fantastic initiative. Ordinarily, I like to throw myself into these things but I did get ejected from sewing class in year 9 due to breaking 3 sewing machines and creating an applique the quality that someone far, far, far younger would have made... I really do think someone would cry if I gifted them a Morsbag. Thankfully the husband does all the sewing in our house... hmmm!!?? In other news, Terry has taken up the challenge and the duddyometer #1000miles is ticking again after the injury debacle! Don’t forget to donate, it truly is a worthy cause! Happy Reading,

Book Review
Golden Hill by Francis Spufford is a joy. Clever, funny, sharp and tantalising, it crackles along with a witty, fast-talking young rake as its central character and an exploration of the early days of Manhattan as you’ve never imagined it. Mr Smith, fresh off the boat from London in 1746, “hot foot from the cold sea” with a fortune in tow, is a mystery to all who meet him, including the reader, and sometimes it seems even to himself. Can he be trusted? Is he just a handsome, charming chancer? We don’t get to find out, or why he’s even there, till the very end of the book. The style of writing is old fashioned, but in a knowing 21st century way. It never slows the pace and the undoubtedly accurate historical descriptions enhance the exuberance of the tale, reminding us that New Amsterdam, even in those days, was the home of sharks and jets, entrepreneurs, villains and heroes, most of them seeking a better future. Mr Spufford has written highly praised non-fiction up till now - science, history, politics - though as he admits all his books have had an element of fiction about them. This time his research is worn more lightly, but one of the delights is knowing that the descriptions of time and place offer you a time machine into New York when it was the undoubtedly little sister of a metropolis like London. Definitely different and great fun.

Coconut macaroons So we are pretty much in Spring and that beach ready body is calling but we still haven’t shaken off the winter blues yet. So these little sweet pick-me-ups are a real treat to have handy when the craving takes hold!
Method:
1. Beat the egg whites until frothy (Make sure no yolk whatsoever has contaminated the egg whites, otherwise you could be whisking for ever!) 2. Add the sugar and beat until stiff. 3. Fold in the coconut, put mixture into a piping bag with a star nozzle and pipe 30 macaroons onto a parchment covered baking sheet. 4. Bake for 30 minutes in a preheated oven (170ºC/150ºC Fan/Gas Mark 3). 5. Remove from oven, and allow to cool for a few minutes before removing them from the baking sheet. Collie – 8 years old Domino is not suitable to live with children and would prefer to be the only pet. Domino is not comfortable with dogs and will need to be kept on his lead when out on walks. Domino is clean in the home and can be left alone for up to 5 hours. We would prefer Collie experience for Domino. Domino needs limited exercise as he does have hip dysplasia and arthritis. Rambles with Rafa A shorter walk this month but a rewarding one all the same. We begin and end near Portland Country Park, which just so happens to have a very dog friendly visitors centre. Perfect for a cuppa after a good walk, and maybe a snozzage for your pup! David Hallam of JH Legal keeps finding these hidden gems and we can’t stop telling him how grateful we and Rafa are. Speaking of which David is soldiering on towards his 1000 mile challenge (#walk1000 miles) despite twisted ankles obtained whilst rescuing a wayward damsel in distress (A beautiful Newfoundland doggy). Standing with your back to the car park entrance, continue straight ahead, along a well laid footpath, passing a signboard on your left. Continue straight ahead until the path passes into some trees, bends around to the left, and then to a T junction of footpaths. At this point turn right and continue along a footpath with a steep drop to your left. A little further on, the path begins to descend. At the bottom of the hill you will reach a T junction of paths with a metal fence, and railway line directly in front of you. Turn right to continue along a footpath, keeping a metal fence and railway line on your left. Continue along this path for some distance. Eventually the path bears slightly to the right and away from the railway line. Continue straight ahead until reaching a T junction of paths. At the T junction turn left, climb up some steps, and cross over a railway bridge. As you climb down the steps from the bridge, continue straight ahead, ignoring the path on the right. Continue straight ahead for some distance until passing through a metal width restrictor. Continue straight ahead staying close to some trees on your right. Continue straight ahead until passing through a gap in a fence. After, ignore a path to the left, and continue straight ahead with a fence on both sides. Continue until you reach a cream coloured house on your left. At this point, keep right and begin to climb gently. Follow the path into a field, and now continue to climb with a hedge on your left. After a short distance, turn right, pass close by a pylon on your left, and continue to cross an open field. Continue straight ahead until passing a grave yard on your left. After, continue straight ahead to pass by a metal gate and into a church yard. Continue along a path and pass the church on your right. Pass through a wooden gate, out of the church yard, and onto a road. Turn left along the road, and begin to head downhill. Continue along the road for some distance. After passing a bus stop on your right, and just prior to a bus stop on your left, turn left along ‘Laburnum Avenue’. Continue along ‘Laburnum Avenue’ until the road bends sharp around to the right. At this point, continue straight ahead along a road for a short distance, and then continue as the road turns into a lane. A very short distance along the lane, bear slightly left to continue along the lane with a wall on your right and a fence on your left. Upon reaching a metal gate directly in front of you, bear slightly left again to continue along a footpath with a fence on both sides. After a very short distance the path splits in two. Take the right hand split and continue with a fence on both sides. Continue for some distance and after passing a ‘managing grasslands’ info board on your

left continue until reaching a metal gate directly in front of you. Pass by the gate, and then, turn immediately right, heading downhill across a field. At the bottom of the hill cross over a wooden footbridge, pass through a gate, and then continue uphill to cross another field. At the top of the hill, pass through a metal gate, cross over a railway line, and then pass through another metal gate. Continue straight ahead along a tarmac footpath. After a short distance pass by a sign board on your left, and begin to gently climb uphill. Continue straight ahead for some distance until passing ‘Portland Country Park Visitor Centre’ on your right. The tarmac footpath now turns into a single track road. Continue straight along the road passing ‘Kirkby Kennels’ on your right. After a short distance the road bends sharp to the left. At this point continue straight ahead along a lane. After a short distance you will pass a farm on your right. Shortly after the farm the lane bends around to the right. Continue straight ahead to pass by a metal gate, and then continue straight ahead along a lane. Follow the lane for some distance until reaching a road. Turn left along the road for a short distance, and then, just prior to a bus stop, turn left through a gap in the hedge, into a field. Continue to cross the field with the hedge on your left. At the far side of the field continue straight ahead, along a lane, for a short distance, until reaching a road. Turn left along the road for some distance until reaching a T junction of roads. Turn left again and after a short distance turn right, back into the car park, and starting point.

Make a Morsbag How often do you find yourself at the shops and it’s only when the checkout person says ‘would you like a bag?’ that you remember you left them in the car / in the drawer / on the table / in the dog (or is that last one just your homework?) Well I’d like to say I have the answer, but I don’t. You’re just going to have to learn to remember!! But maybe I have something that might save a few whales, ladies and gentlemen let me introduce you to Morsbag, a neat little idea that is helping make the world a little better, one bag at a time. So what is Morsbag? Sociable, guerrilla, bagging, that’s what. Still confused? Well let me spell it out more simply. Morsbagging starts off as simply as making a bag. Download the pattern from the website, follow the simple instructions, voila you have a re-usable shopping bag and are now an eco-warrior. Ok not quite but good for you, remember it’s the little things you choose to do or not to do that make all the difference. Some remnants of winter this month, but plenty to do for the coming spring.
Small pots of snowdrops are pretty expensive in nurseries as you’ll probably know, but growing next year’s supplies yourself is easy if you wait till this year’s crop have finished flowering and lift, divide and replant clumps while they’ve still got good healthy green leaves – known as planting in the green. If some of your daffs have been “blind” or non-flowering this year, chances are they could do with a good feed – once a month until their leaves die down (not knotting the leaves) or that they’re overcrowded, in which case lift and replant. Bare root plants should go into the ground before the end of March so the tiny roots they need to grow, get a chance to spread before top growth starts. Top dress containers by removing the top two inches of compost – you don’t need to re-pot entirely every year. If you’re thinking of re-invigorating container plants which were looking a bit tired last year, carefully remove them from the pot as soon as they start showing growth and replace around a third of the compost in the pot, particularly around the roots of the plant.

Often an emotional issue for fans who can see the young player as one of their own, but is modern football too ruthless for such concepts…over to Barry.
Ben Brereton should not fall into the Patrick Bamford trap…
At just 17 years of age, it must feel like Brereton has the world at his feet, having scored the most dramatic of late winners against Aston Villa and a fine header against Fulham. To those around Nottingham Forest, that 93rd-minute winner against Steve Bruce’s side at the City Ground didn’t come as a surprise. For the last couple of years following his arrival from Stoke City, Brereton has been scoring goal after goal, week after week. For Brereton, his rise is genuine Roy Of The Rovers stuff, but he can’t fall into the trap that Patrick Bamford did a few years ago. Having been released by his hometown club in 2015, it could have been easy for the striker to wonder if he was ever going to make it, but he’s well on the way now. Gary Brazil spotted something in the tall, gangly youngster, something strong enough to waste no time in dragging him along the A50 from the Bet365 Stadium to Nottingham. He saw something that cannot be coached – the ability to score a goal. It’s that unique ability that attracted Chelsea to sign Patrick Bamford at the age of 18, when he was just a few months older than Brereton. In 2012, Forest were struggling financially, and boss Steve Cotterill could do little to stop Bamford leaving for Stamford Bridge in a deal worth around £1.5 million, it’s a bitter pill that still rankles among many in Nottingham even now. A young Bamford, born in Grantham but nurtured on the banks of the Trent, left Forest without making a senior start, and the former Reds striker went on to live something of a nomadic existence. For the

next four years or so, he was flogged around in loan spells at MK Dons, Derby County, Crystal Palace, Norwich, Burnley and Middlesbrough. Some were successful, some not so. He ended up closing the Chelsea chapter on his career in January when he signed a permanent deal at the Riverside Stadium for £6 million. Shipped from here to there, and back again, without anywhere to call home has undoubtedly hampered Bamford’s progress in recent years and, given his ability, he should have been playing regularly long before now. Yes, he may still go on and have a good career, but it could have been so much better. If there was ever a warning close to home for Brereton, that is it. With interest from Manchester United and Liverpool, it would take a remarkable person to not be swayed by talk of a move to the Premier League and one of those clubs. He, like the rest of us, is only human. It’s easy for people like us in the media to dictate to players, but hopefully, the wise old heads of Gary Brazil and Jack Lester should be two people he listens to the most – they’ll know what’s best for him, whether that’s in the interests of the club or not. Even with strong competition from senior players at the City Ground, there’s no reason why Brereton can’t continue learning his trade and developing as a player and a man at Forest. While a footballer’s career may be relatively short, the shadow of Patrick Bamford should loom large in the corridors at Wilford Lane. Keep learning your trade and, in time, your chance to play in the Premier League will come. And you just never know, it might be with Nottingham Forest.
