Editor’s Message Love is in the air this month, not least because February represents the end of winter! Although I’m not going to talk about the weather because who knows what’s going on with that! I feel bad for the people with the same name as the storms. I remember when storm Emily hit Britain in 2013; I didn’t hear the end of the jokes for ages!

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Our resident football reporter has his say on televised games and ticket pricing. He makes a fantastic case for the ‘twenty is plenty’ campaign… Sky Sports have been a champion of football since 1992 when the concept of the Premier League was first brought to our screens.
One of the wider concerns I have about more Football League coverage on television is the worrying drop in attendances and not just at the City Ground.
But was it a good thing?
Clubs will receive a cash boost from being on television, granted, but is it worth their while to fill their ground when a game is broadcast live?
The broadcaster recently ran a promotion of ten Championship games throughout December, with games being shown on successive days throughout the month. Football supporters are notoriously a touchy bunch and it doesn’t take a huge amount to stir up their levels of annoyance and make them bristle with anger. Matches being moved for television is nothing new, and when you support clubs like Nottingham Forest, Derby County or Leeds United, even at their respective level, you have to expect an amount of game shifting. Never has this been more apparent than now.
Forest, Leeds and Derby have already been live on television ten times this season, far more than any other club in the second tier, resulting in the Elland Road outfit threatening to ban Sky from broadcasting their recent clash with Derby due to what they believe to be consistent movement of fixtures.
Take Forest as an example, against Derby, the Reds’ biggest clash of the season struggled to attract a crowd above 25,000.
The fact it was moved to a Friday evening coupled with it being on television, in addition to Forest’s poor form, were all contributing factors to a disapprovingly low crowd – but ticket prices were inflated given the opposition and the club couldn’t fill their ground for the biggest game of the season.
At Wolves in mid-December, a crowd of around 20,000 was present with only a handful of Forest supporters (857) while the following Monday’s clash against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park attracted 12,000 with just 491 visitors.
Throughout December, Dougie Freedman’s Forest were televised three times alone, with a fourth game (Cardiff City) being moved to accommodate the Leeds clash being moved from Boxing Day to the following day, thus giving Reds fans a trip to Cardiff on a Tuesday evening instead of a Bank Holiday Monday afternoon.
Games last season where Forest took more than 5,000 supporters between the two games.
For some supporters, it’s brilliant. For others, it’s a real annoyance.
It’s just not fair on fans who keep being made to pay the exorbitant prices to watch a fairly average piece of entertainment – which football has become recently.
Prior to that, the Derby clash in early November was shifted for television, meaning that more than half of Forest’s final nine games of 2015 were affected by television scheduling.
If you’re a supporter who struggles to get to games, then the ability to watch more of your team on television is obviously an exciting prospect. But if you work or have to make travel arrangements, continually having games moved is a real problem.
It’s one of those things that goes with the territory in the Premier League, with few games played at the traditional Saturday at 3pm anymore. The reality is that as soon as Sky lost their rights to the Uefa Champions League to bitter rival BT Sport, they had a huge gaping hole to fill and have tried to shoehorn as much league football into their schedule as is possible, while still charging the same amount on subscriptions. Funny that. Lesser product, same or greater cost.

Not specifically relating to the ten in ten marathon, but speaking more generally, the games I’ve seen on the box this season have been played out in front of worryingly low crowds.
Other Championship televised clashes have attracted lower crowds, but with clubs charging anything up to £43 for a televised game, is it any wonder?
Why, especially in the run-up to Christmas, your average supporter would feel inclined pay more than £40 (plus other costs) to watch a game they can either watch at home or in a bar for free, God only knows.
A few weekends ago, Derby played at Sheffield Wednesday, in another live game and their supporters were expected to pay £43.
And, let’s be fair, Leppings Lane is hardly the most comfortable of settings to spend two hours of your life – especially for almost £50.
How any club at this level can justify £43 at any point, let alone when it’s screened live, is beyond me.
Much has been said and written – and will continue to be, but the football authorities have to take a look at the situation because supporters are once again being treated with a huge element of contempt and something must be done. In my book, twenty is most certainly, plenty.

Editor’s Choice for Louise Cutting, Travel Counsellor
This month I wanted to share with you the fantastic service that I had received from Louise Cutting@ Travel Counsellors. The story has two parts to it, which makes the service that I received even better. So, for a Christmas present this year I booked a hotel and show in London for two. I had a little look online, so I had a rough idea of cost but because I didn’t have the time to research the hotels I was looking at, thought that I would see if Louise could help? My thoughts, probably like yours, are that she’ll only do big holidays but she might point me in the right direction if I ask nicely! Within 24hours, I got a list of possible shows to choose from, seat types and a couple of hotels that were within walking distance of the theatres, it was like she had pre-empted my every consideration. So the next thing that comes is the price, it was a better quality for a better price without any of the hassle… so I booked and it was delivered in a beautifully wrapped wallet for me to give as my gift. Now comes the second part. On the Sunday before the Monday travel, the recipients were unable to travel due to illness. We contacted Louise on Sunday morning just to see if there was anything that she could do (knowing full well that most places wouldn’t refund anything with less than 24 hours to go) but she spent some time, calling around and managed to get us a 50% refund. I couldn’t believe it, we weren’t expecting anything. So, we’ve re-booked with the refund money with Louise and any future travel plans, however big or small, will be via Louise at Travel Counsellors.

Slimming World Banoffee Pie This is one of my all time favourite desserts, so it seems sensible that, when the diet and fitness regime is getting a little tougher and the summer hols still appear to be an eternity away, we indulge in a little bit of naughtiness. However, as with all of the Slimming World recipes, naughty doesn’t have to mean sinful… so go on, spoil yourself…it is the month of love!
Banoffee Pie ingredients:
• 60g low fat spread • 10 reduced fat digestive biscuits • 2 x 12g sachets powdered gelatine • 250g quark
• 3 x 175g pots Muller Light Toffee yogurt (or any Free toffee yogurt) • 1 tbsp sweetener • 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 2 egg whites* • 2 bananas • 2 level tsp cocoa powder, to decorate
Method:
Preheat the oven to 190°C/Fan 170°C/Gas 5 and line a 20cm springform tin with non-stick baking parchment. • Melt the spread in a pan over a low heat • Meanwhile, put the biscuits in a sealable food bag, bash into fine crumbs with a rolling pin and tip into a bowl. Pour in the melted spread, stir well and spoon the mixture into the prepared tin to cover the base, pressing down evenly. Bake for 12-15 minutes then set aside to cool. • While the base is in the oven, dissolve the gelatine in 5 tablespoons of boiling water. • Put the quark in a bowl and whisk until smooth, then whisk in the yogurt, sweetener, vanilla and gelatine liquid. • Whisk the egg whites in a bowl until stiff peaks form and fold into the quark mixture. • Spoon the quark mixture over the biscuit base and smooth the surface with a palette knife. Chill for 4 hours or until set. • Release the pie from the tin and put the pie, still on its base if necessary, on a serving plate. Thinly slice the bananas and arrange neatly on top, then sprinkle with cocoa powder and slice to serve. Rambles with Rafa One of my favourite things to do at this time of year is get out and about, walking my Raffy dog on crisp frosty days. If you’re anything like me then I’m sure you will enjoy this month’s walk as much as we did. Thanks again to David from JH Legal who continues to bring us the best walks come snow or shine.
6.5 mile circular from Poolsbrook Country Park
A longer but gentle walk for you and your dog! This fairly flat walk should take around 2½ to 3 hours. There is a range of terrain, with some muddy and uneven sections. There are also a couple of road sections, so take plenty of care and make sure you wear appropriate footwear for the conditions. Start: Poolsbrook Country Park, East Car Park, Erin Road (A6192) Staveley, Chesterfield, Derbys. 1.

Standing in the car park entrance with your back to the road, head diagonal left across the car park and take the footpath signposted ‘Horses This Way’. Continue with a lake on your right and cross over a footbridge. After a short distance at a ‘Danger deep water’ signpost on your right, turn left to go uphill along a footpath with a hedge on either side.
Continue until the path bends sharp right. Follow the path around to the right and then after a short distance follow the path sharp left. Continue uphill and after a short distance bear right to continue along a tarmac lane with a fence and views to your right.
Continue along the lane until reaching a metal kissing gate on your right. Pass through the gate and continue with a hedge on your right. After passing through a gap and continue straight downhill through some trees.

Continue ahead with the lake on your left. At the far end of the lake and as the path begins to bend around to the left, bear right and uphill passing a bench on your right.
Follow the path into some trees and continue through the trees for some distance until reaching a road. Turn right along the road until reaching a T Junction of roads. At this point, cross straight over the road onto a lane and signposted footpath. Continue along the lane and after some distance ignore a lane/footpath to the left. Continue for a short distance and at a T Junction turn right along a trail.
After a short distance and at a signboard reading ‘Trans Pennine Trail’. Turn left along a footpath. Follow the path for some distance and then pass through a metal width restrictor.
At the bottom of the hill, just prior to a lake, turn right. Continue with a lake on your left and then continue until leaving the lake behind and reaching a metal width restrictor. Pass through the restrictor and then turn immediately to the right. After a short distance, pass through another width restrictor and turn right along a footpath. Follow this path for some distance until reaching a car park on your right.
Alongside the car park pass through a gap in a fence and turn immediately right. After, turn immediately left following a sign for ‘St John’s Plantation’. Cross over a main road and continue straight ahead. Upon reaching a T Junction of paths turn left. Continue for a short distance and then bear left to cross over a bridge. After the Bridge, ignore the path bearing to the right and continue straight ahead to a main road. Cross the road diagonal left and continue along a path with a lake on your left.
Continue to pass a recreation ground on your right. Continue ahead and then turn left over a footbridge signposted for ‘Nature Reserve’.
After the bridge, turn immediately right, over a stile, up some steps and through a width restrictor. Continue until reaching a lake ahead of you. Go to the right of the lake, passing a ‘Deep Water’ sign on your left.

After a short distance, enter some woodland. Follow the path around to the right and then steep uphill for a very short distance. Continue for some distance until reaching a major fork to the right. Take the right fork going uphill. At the top pass through a width restrictor and then continue with a fence on both sides. Upon reaching a road, turn right signposted for ‘Poolsbrook Country Park’.

Continue along the footpath until reaching a single track tarmac road. Cross straight over the road and then turn immediately left, heading downhill. Cross over another road and then continue to skirt around the edge of a lake on your right. Follow the lake around to return to the car park.

Gardener’s Calendar ~ February 2016 Lots of us will have bought amaryllis to provide a bit of indoor winter colour and sadly most get chucked onto the compost heap when they’ve finished flowering. But you can keep them going and even get more flowers in late summer and this time next year. Deadhead the flower when it’s gone over, and leave the stalk to die back naturally. Then keep feeding and watering to spur further flower production. Bare rooted shrubs and climbers can be planted so long as the ground isn’t frozen. But be careful to plant about a foot from any wall you’re planning to train them up, otherwise they are likely to be deprived of rainfall blocked out by the bulk of the wall. You can cut back late flowering clematis to about a foot tall. This will give you flowers all the way up the stem rather than just at the top. Shrubs such as cotinus (smoke plant) can be pruned, but they flower on last year’s growth so if you’re growing them for flowers as well as their beautiful leaves you may want to be selective and leave some branches untouched.

Gary’s Grumbles This month finds Gary in a thoughtful mood as the death of a musical Icon brings back memories of a different time and the political decision of a nation that resonates with today. My resounding memory of Bowie will be Labyrinth and those trousers, so he obviously made a completely different impression on me. Happy reading!
I woke up on my Birthday to the news that David Bowie had died, he wasn’t everybody’s cup of tea, but his music was the soundtrack of my teenage years and I was genuinely upset that he’d gone. There’ll only be a portion of you who grew up in the black and white, cold, damp and miserable 1970’s but if you did then you’d likely be part of one tribe or another. There were the heavy rocker types, the glam rock freaks and the soul brothers. As a school kid the type of music you liked defined you and if you were into Bowie as I was, then you were viewed as being a bit strange by the other kids and the teachers, a bit of a freak. Later in the decade along came punk and new wave and again the music you liked continued to define you as a young adult. It’s hard to imagine now but back then there were specific pubs and clubs for each different type of music. The 70’s really were miserable, but I miss those years and can’t imagine wanting to grow up in any other era. The 1970’s also hosted our last referendum on Europe, which was a simple in or out decision, at the time the economy of the country was in a bit of a state, so the promise of change and something new probably swayed people into believing that we’d be in a better in the ‘new Europe’. Over the years though our politicians and the Daily
Mail have placed every one of our problems as Europe’s fault, from immigration through to benefits cheats and bent bananas. I’m wavering at the prospect of the next referendum that will ask us to stay or go. I’ve always been pro Europe but I think that goes back to when Thatcher was against it and the only thing that seemed to temper her policies were the bureaucrats in Brussels. Maybe my mind is being changed by the fact that Cameroon is all for staying in, I just do not trust the man, his pomposity and false caring just grate on me. Our problem in choosing seems to be that we are told by both sides that we’ll be worse off if we stay or leave, we’ll lose jobs if we stay or leave and that our country will be safer if we stay or leave. The people telling us this are supposed to be our public servants but we don’t seem to get any facts or figures on which to make judgements, it just seems to be opinions and gut feel. At some point the celebs will be rolled out on either side of the argument and that for many people could be the deciding factor on which way they vote. Jim Davidson, Noel Edmonds, Simon Cowell and Piers Morgan telling us to vote to stay might just sway enough of us to go the other way. I wonder which way David Bowie would have voted.
