Editor’s Message Ok, so we are officially in autumn and the clocks go back 1 hour on the 25th October. Always a tough time of year, especially for us working dog owners because apart from the weekends, we have to mostly walk in the dark….which is why we have some cracking walks coming up to keep your vitamin D levels up by enjoying a lovely long walk with a pub lunch on a Sunday!! More bad news cushioned by good news. I know of at least one local fireworks display that has been cut this year due to funding issues and it was popular too! However, if you are looking for a good quality local event that has fun for all the family, Newton promises to host a fabulous event and I for one will be taking myself over there this year. And on a happy note, the NEC 3-day Christmas Gift Fair is celebrating its 20 th anniversary this year and I’ve got tickets to give away again!! I went last year and it was absolutely fantastic. It really got us into the Christmas spirit and I even managed to pick up a few great pressies nice and early! A Dad & his Lad... Topical and controversial…what more can we ask for?! Although the facts don’t lie, do you agree with our Dad this month?
Rooney breaks the record but is he the finest English striker? Wayne Rooney overtook Sir Bobby Charlton’s record in September at Wembley v Switzerland but although he has scored more goals, will he really be recognised as our greatest striker of all time? Considering Rooney has only scored 1 goal at World Cup finals and since making his debut in 2003 it is questionable. He did score 4 goals in Euro 2004 and only 12 of his strikes have been in Friendlies however there are more deserving candidates for the accolade. Gary Lineker scored 48 goals in 80 games, a feat Rooney took 105 games to match. It depends on the stage and the opposition of course. Lineker scored a remarkable 10 goals in 12 World Cup final appearances, although interestingly he did not manage a single goal in 2 disastrous European Championship campaigns (1988 and 1992). Jimmy Greaves scored 44 goals in 57 matches, including 6 hat tricks but Greaves was unlucky. Fit enough to play in the famous final in 1966 v West Germany, Greaves was left out after being injured in the earlier stages of the

tournament after French midfielder Joseph Bonnel left Greaves nursing a wound requiring 14 stitches in his leg. Had Greaves been selected and scored in the ‘66 final, combined with his record he would have been the undisputed greatest English striker of all time. Geoff Hurst, 24 in 49 appearances, cannot go without a mention. This is the man that scored a hat-trick in the 1966 World Cup Final after all. The fact is though he has scored less than half of Rooney’s total Bobby Charlton, the previous holder of Rooney’s record, notched 49 goals in 106 games. A record almost identical to Rooneys. Including 4 World Cup Finals goals, it is easy to forget he wasn’t actually a striker but a midfielder. 22 of his goal were scored in friendlies. So right now, in my opinion, Lineker pips it. A goal every 1.67 games at International level and his 10 goals on the biggest stage of all, at the World Cups in Mexico ‘86 and Italy ’90, make him the number 1. Rooney, still only 29 and with 2 major tournaments left in him, needs two dominant performances in next years’ Euros in France and the 2018 World Cup in Russia, to be considered for the achievement of the greatest England striker.

Derbyshire Police UPDate
as the darker nights draw in and we say goodbye to the summer months, it is time to start thinking about home security and personal safety throughout autumn and winter.
You can step up security by using items including alarms and door chimes to better protect your property. If you are heading out for the evening but you are worried about leaving your house in darkness, consider applying timer switches to lights, TVs and radios, to make it look like someone is home. The use of outside lighting will help you to detect if someone is near to your property. Investing in gravel for your driveway or footpath will also allow you to hear if a person is approaching. October brings with it the prospect of Halloween and trick or treating for many local youngsters. Whilst this is a great activity for young children to take part in alongside a responsible adult, trick or treating can be extremely daunting for the more elderly and vulnerable residents in the community. ‘No Trick or Treat’ posters produced by police will be available free of charge to pick up from local organisations including doctor surgeries, shops and libraries. These posters can be displayed by anyone not wanting to be disturbed during Halloween night and local Safer Neighbourhood officers are urging anyone taking part in the Trick or Treating celebrations to respect the wishes of those who display these posters in their homes. Posters are also available for shops and businesses to inform people that staff will not be selling flour or eggs to anyone under the age of 16 during the Halloween period. Local officers are encouraging residents to be vigilant to anti-social behaviour (ASB) during this time and report any suspicious activity to police by calling 101, or 999 if a crime is taking place. In November as commemorations for Bonfire Night take place, residents are again being encouraged to be alert to any ASB and crime that takes place. Posters are available to download via the Derbyshire Constabulary website informing members of the community about the laws around fireworks and these can be displayed in shop windows too. Rambles with Rafa What a lovely walk we have for you this month! As ever David from JH Legal continues to provide the very best walks for you to enjoy! I’d encourage you to break off at Newstead Abbey for a wander around the grounds, particularly the Japanese Gardens. As the nights draw in this should be a beautiful autumnal walk.
6.5 mile circular from Newstead via Newstead Abbey and the Linby trail.
A moderate walk for you and your dog. This medium length walk should take around 3 hours. There may be some sections of uneven terrain depending on the weather. There are a couple of road sections, so take plenty of care and make sure you wear appropriate footwear for the conditions. Start: Car park adjacent to the Newstead Centre, Tilford Road, Newstead Village, NG15 0BS. 1. Walk back through the car park entrance, turn left and then immediately right to cross over a level crossing. After the level crossing take the first road on the right. 2. Continue along the road until it bends sharp left. Continue around to the left, pass under a bridge pass by a metal gate and between two stone pillars. Continue straight for some distance and pass between two more stone pillars. Continue straight to eventually pass a pond and waterfall on your left.

Continue to pass through a metal gate, over a stone bridge and pass by a pond on your left. Continue along the path until reaching a road. Turn right along the road into Linby village. 10. Pass the Horse and Groom pub on your right and continue along the road until reaching a roundabout. At the roundabout, turn right and join ‘Linby Trail’.
3. Further on you will pass Newstead Abbey on your right and then a car park on your left. Continue straight and cross over a crossroads. After a short distance turn right onto a footpath. 4. Continue into the woods along the path until reaching a tarmac road. Turn left along the road and continue straight for some distance. 5. Upon reaching a large pair of metal gates directly in front of you, take a footpath to the right of the gates and continue straight with a tall hedge on your left. Continue to pass through a metal gate and then continue straight along a farm track for some distance until reaching a road. 6. Turn right along the road signposted for ‘Village Centre’. After the road bends sharp right and then sharp left, turn immediately right along a tarmac lane signposted for ‘Linby’. 7. Pass by a large wooden gate and then pass through a double metal gate. Just prior to reaching a second double metal gate, bear slightly left and pass through a large wooden gate into a churchyard, ignoring the large wooden gate on your left. 8. After passing through the gate continue through the churchyard for a very short distance and then turn left

11. Continue along the trail for quite some distance until eventually passing a wooden signboard on your right reading ‘Linby Trail’. After the signboard, continue straight to cross over a bridge and then after a short distance bear left away from the trail and onto a playing field.
12. Head diagonally across the playing field towards the clubhouse building, near the clubhouse pass through a wooden gate onto a road. Turn left along the road and cross over a level crossing back to the car park.

“As everything slips back into normality with the night’s drawing in and the back end of the year’s festivities looming, what more could you ask for but a nice, simple, comforting dish to put a smile on your chops! Submitted by our very own rambling chef, Terry”
Potato bake
IngredIents: (Serves 2) 4. Slices of thin middle cut bacon. 4 medium size closed cup mushrooms. 1 onion. 1doz small new potatoes.
1 jar of cheese and bacon potato or pasta bake. Approx 100gram mange tout or green beans. Grated Parmesan cheese.
Method: Cut up bacon into small pieces. Slice mushrooms. Slice onion. Slice new potatoes, not too thin. Par boil new potatoes for about 10 min. Whilst potatoes are boiling, put bacon, mushrooms and sliced onion into a frying pan, add a little vegetable oil, and fry a little while, turning to ensure all ingredients are cooked. Strain potatoes, and layer into a casserole, add some of the potato, or pasta bake. Cover first layer with the bacon, onions and mushrooms. Repeat with rest of ingredients. Cover top layer with the sauce, and then sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese over the top. Put the casserole, into the oven, (no need to cover) and bake for around 30 to 40 min at 200 dg. Allow to stand for a few min before serving with green vegetables of your choice. Don’t forget the ~ Terry O.

Gardener’s Calendar ~ October 2015 Although it may seem like summer’s still with us some days, it’s spring bulb planting time. The earlier the better for most bulbs while the soil is still warm and roots can get established. This helps them fight the wet and potential rot of the winter. Tulips are different – plant at the end of November to prevent tulip fire. Generally plant most bulbs, unless individual advice says different, at two and a half times their own depth. Early spring flowerers such as azaleas and rhododendrons need plenty of water now to help buds swell in season. If you’ve given your houseplants fresh air and fun outside this summer now is the time to start bringing them in. Try to do it slowly if possible, maybe to a cool greenhouse first, so the shock of a warm house doesn’t knock them back. Just make sure they’re in before the frosts

Gary’s Grumbles
I do love it when Gary goes on holiday, it’s like his world is broadened to a whole new level of grumbling! Safe to say that the beast is back with fire in his belly and all this just prior to his ‘favourite’ time of year…I can hardly wait for next month! Just got back from Sunny Ibiza, did a couple of gigs at Pacha and went to Amnesia on the Saturday, the kids enjoyed it, but I can’t remember much about it. A couple of things stood out whilst away, one good and one not so. The good bit, well that was being able to walk past restaurants without being hassled to look at their menu or ‘just have a drink’, you may recall that it’s a pet hate of mine, so big up to the Ibizians for their courtesy. The not so good was that the tattoo craze that seems to have taken a hold of the Continentals and I don’t just mean the young un’s. Middle aged women with medieval script all over their bodies I’m afraid is not attractive. The old tripe about it being a statement, I want to prove my individuality, it’s a proof of my love for my kids, blah, blah, blah. Well if you love them, then why not take ‘em out for the day with the money you could have spent on ya tat. I saw one young lad with an eagle on his stomach, well let me tell you, in a few years is probably going to resemble a big tawny owl, as his gut expands. One of my best mates in my youth, let’s call him Glyn for these purposes, proved his love for his girlfriend by having her name tattooed on his arm. Of course they split up a few weeks later and he spent the next 3 years wandering around pubs and nightclubs conversing with anyone called Tracy. He thought he was in one
night until he found out that her name was Tracey with an ‘E’. It’s a fashion and fashions die out, rebellious youth is unlikely to want tats when they see the faded dolphin on their granny. There’s a subject that is splitting this country in two and will lead to greater levels of violence and disorder than we’ve witnessed for years and it really does sadden me - Racism, we dare not speak of it, well some do don’t they? The ‘facebook warriors’. To upset the liberal amongst you, if proven beyond doubt that someone is a paedophile then I would fully support castration, if someone is proven to be a terrorist or have the intention of killing and maiming innocent people then again I would support the Government in destroying them. I know the argument about the Birmingham 6, etc. But at some point we have to believe in technology and hope that the establishment has finally rid itself of corruption. I so hope that it’s not a vain belief. And to upset the rest of you, lets always remember that all Germans weren’t Nazis, that all Irishman weren’t terrorists, that all West Indians aren’t muggers and that all Muslims aren’t terrorists or paedophiles. By all means target the criminals and guilty, but blanket hatred because of someone’s skin colour or religion is just wrong. There’s good and bad in every race, apart from the Welsh.
