Welcome to Amber Valley Voice

3

Welcome to the November Edition of the Amber Valley Voice and I can’t believe how fast this year has gone! I found myself doing some Christmas shopping last week, which apart from being out of character, scared the life out of me as I can remember Christmas shopping for last year like it was yesterday!! With that in mind, there is lots of info on the Christmas lights switch on page 6 and some fab Christmas markets and Fayres taking place, check out page 7,15 and 26 for some local events to attend. We also have lots of new advertisers this month, so a big welcome to all of them and thanks to Janet from Riddings who contacted me regarding the work that Phil Bond had undertaken in her home. I love hearing from members of the community who Distributors Wanted! want to spread the word of good local traders, so please keep the calls coming, as I will always If you are interested in publish them. Finally, I am super excited this month because not only is the Alfreton and Broadmeadows launch only a couple of weeks away but I also have a brand spanking new website courtesy of Steve at Online99, so please have a look and why not tweet me with any news or updates!

Happy Reading! Emily

Burglars, car thieves and those profiting from a life of crime are the targets of a new Derbyshire Constabulary campaign which was recently launched. Operation Rocky has been set up to tackle those involved in serious acquisitive crime, such as burglary and car crime, in north Derbyshire. It will include enforcement action against those involved in crime as well as raising awareness with local residents and businesses. The month-long operation will also target anti-social behaviour. One of the key themes of the operation is ‘Dirty Cash’ which is appealing to local people to call Crimestoppers with information on those they suspect are prospering from crime. It is based around the Proceeds of Crime Act [POCA] and other legislation which allows police to pursue criminals through the courts to confiscate their ill-gotten gains. Other activities that will take place during the operation include targeting cross-border criminals using our roads to commit crime, burglary awareness and prevention, and a crackdown on drugs. The operation covers the whole of ‘C Division’ including Chesterfield, Bolsover, NE Derbyshire and Amber Valley. Chief Inspector Graham McLaughlin, who is leading the operation, said: “Historically, as the darker nights begin to draw in, we see an increase in crime, particularly house burglary and criminal damage. “Operation Rocky will see dozens of extra officers focussed on this type of crime with their sole aim to disrupt and arrest persistent offenders and others within our communities who break the law. Anyone with information about crime or anti-social behaviour can contact Derbyshire police on the new non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

12 Non - Meat of the Month - November is Nut Roast As Christmas is just around the corner, I thought that I would provide an alternative for Christmas dinner. This is obviously a vegetarian recipe that has replaced the traditional turkey for years but perhaps it might be interesting to serve alongside a turkey, duck or goose for the meat eaters?!

Ingredients 1 medium chopped onion 2 cloves of pressed garlic 3-4 large sliced mushrooms 1 tbsp of plain Elour 300ml of vegetable stock (or water) 175g of breadcrumbs 1/2 tsp of mixed dried herbs 1 tbsp of soy sauce

175g of Einely chopped mixed nuts ( or a speciEically chosen selection of your own) Salt & Pepper Flour for coating Oil for frying and roasting

To Serve A selection of roasted winter vegetables, such as beetroot, parsnips, carrots and butternut squash or sweet potatoes.

Method Pre-heat the oven to 375F or 190C. Fry the onions and the garlic in a pan until soft and then add the mushrooms for an additional two minutes. Add the Elour to the onions and mushrooms and continuously stir whilst adding the stock, bring to the boil and then simmer for a further few minutes. Add the breadcrumbs, herbs, nuts and soy sauce to the mixture until there is a solid consistency. Season to taste. Turn out onto the chopping board, sprinkled with Elour and form into a loaf shape with your hands. Cover the Loaf evenly with Elour. Heat a roasting tin in the oven with a little oil in the bottom then put the loaf in the tin . Bake for approximately 30 minutes ensuring that the Roast is basted occasionally.

Book Review Shardlake by CJ Sansom

If you’re one of the happy band who love historical crime novels and you haven’t discovered CJ Sansom yet, the question has to be – why not? Stories set in Tudor times are a hugely popular genre. After all the brilliant Hilary Mantel won the Man Booker prize for Wolf Hall – the story of Thomas Cromwell - and there are whole shelves in bookshops devoted to the period. Sansom’s five Matthew Shardlake books start with Dissolution which dives into the murky period around the dissolution of the monasteries - through to the latest, Heartstone, set as Henry VIII – ever the seeker after glory in conquest - plunders the national coffers to finance a disastrously expensive war with France. They create a whole world around a man who is an outcast in his own time – a hunchback lawyer with a satisfyingly intelligent and sympathetic mind. As with all the best novels set in a different time period, it’s not just a strong plot which carries these books – although CJ Sansom’s stories of murder and injustice (and in the case of Heartstone the vulnerability of children), are brilliantly absorbing page-turners. But Mr Sansom is a historian and a former lawyer, so the detail – the way society worked, the casual cruelty, the smells, the food, the physical comforts and hardships and prejudices are superbly drawn. If you haven’t started Shardlake, and it sounds like your cup of tea, you may want to set aside some serious reading time.

Experience a more comfortable home with Woodland Living

17

Derby based Woodland Property Services have opened a new Kitchen, Bedroom and Bathroom installation division which will create at least 20 new jobs in Derby. Woodland Living are to supply and install quality, well priced, fitted kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms to both trade & retail customers in both Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Meeting Managing Director Matt Fearn was a real pleasure, his enthusiasm for the imminent launch of the new service was infectious - Matt exclaimed “we pledge to offer fantastic customer service and great value. There will be no high pressure sales tactics, just honest advice, great products and a well planned delivery schedule”. Woodland should be well placed to deliver such a service as they have been successfully working in the Public Services sector since 1998. It has to be said, the list of accreditations awarded to Woodland is impressive, they boast more than most in this fiercely competitive marketplace. Matt was keen to point out “the competition doesn’t worry us at all, our pedigree, products and service speaks for itself.”. Clients can choose from an impressive selection of traditional and contemporary ranges. There is also the opportunity to have your kitchen “revamped” using the Kitchen King service which will see your existing kitchen re-modelled by replacing the “tired doors and worn work-tops” Perfect for anyone who has a restricted budget. So, if you are hoping to improve your home, it has to be worth considering Woodland Living. After the warm welcome and workshop tour, I know they would be on the top of my list.

19

Were you once part of the Guiding family, or would you or your daughter like to join now? Guiding is great. It is a fantastic social experience, looks great on a CV and is perfect for those looking to strengthen our local community, preserving it for future generations. Girls are always buzzing when they come out of a meeting having had fun, made new friends, learned something new or gained a badge. We also teach them important skills they need for the future. Activities are tailored to the age group we work with and we make sure each session is challenging and fun. However, we do need more adult helpers and leaders in our area. There are four sections you can help with; Rainbows (aged 57yrs), Brownies (aged 7-10yrs), Guides (aged 10 – 14yrs) and the Senior Section (aged 14-25yrs). If you or your daughter are interested and would like to know more then take a look at the national website www.girlguiding.org.uk or locally www.girlguidingderbyshire.org . We have units across all sections in our area including Alfreton, Ironville, Pinxton, Riddings, Somercotes, South Normanton, and Swanwick. Help save train making in the UK

23

Actions to save Bombardier and up 15,000 UK high-tech manufacturing jobs in the UK continue with unrelenting pressure on the Government. Bombardier is the world’s largest train-maker and is currently engaged in a review that could result in its withdrawal from the UK. If it does, the impact on our local economy would be disastrous. The contract has not been awarded to Siemens - they just have ‘preferred bidder’ status. Current situation:• Peaceful protest meetings - local, in London and elsewhere - are set to continue • Pressure groups and lobbying of Members of Parliament continues • Bombardier Community Support Group has been formed and is rapidly increasing its level of inEluence • The legal situation has been referred to the European Commission • A question has been tabled with Amber Valley MP Nigel Mills - “Given the consensus view that Thameslink is a Government contract - is the Secretary of State prepared to stay within the law and stop the current tender process before a contract is signed?” A written response is awaited • Derby City Council have provided funding for a full Judicial Review Please keep your Einger on the pulse and do everything that you can to support jobs in the UK If you want to become pro-actively involved please contact Malcolm Holden - malcolm.holden@sixsigma-ltd.com

DVD Review - SENNA (12)

25

‘SENNA’ tells the true story of motor racing legend Ayrton Senna, for many the greatest driver ever to compete in the sport. As someone who grew up on a diet of Senna, Prost and Mansell I was excited to see this documentary and I wasn’t disappointed. The ilm/documentary takes you from Sennas early years when he competed in the karting world championships which he described as “pure driving, real racing” away from the money and the politics which would de ine the future of motorsport - to his death in Imola 1994 and the emotion charged funeral. There is so much unseen footage and audio from his friends and family that you really feel like you are privy to a private world. He was clearly a highly emotional person and felt extremely passionate about the sport that he loved but you sense he knew that it would be short lived, particularly with the changes in technology that were changing the sport. This fantastic documentary doesn’t just tell you the story, it takes you right back to the emotions of the time, and is fascinating viewing regardless of whether you are a Formula 1 fan or not.

Gardeners Calendar - November

It’s still not too late to plant tulips, but you should have the rest of your Spring bulbs in the ground now. If you’ve planted subtropicals and other plants this summer which aren’t fully hardy, you need to mulch heavily if you want to risk leaving them in the ground. Mound up straw around the base, then bubble wrap and leece leafy plants at the irst signs of frost. Bubble wrap is also a good way of protecting pots which might crack in very cold weather – and raise them onto pot legs to avoid waterlogging.

Top Tip Use small stakes, coloured stones or shells to mark where you’ve planted your Spring bulbs. Then you won’t disturb them when you start working the soil again next year.
