Book Review The Hare with the Amber Eyes

The Hare with Amber Eyes is a netsuke - a tiny ivory Japanese carving. Something you could turn over in your pocket while you’re waiting for a train or to get served in a coffee queue.

It’s a strange contender to be the subject of a bestselling book (which it is, topping many of this year’s non-%iction lists). Even more oddly, The Hare with Amber Eyes was the winner of 2010 Costa Biography Award. But don’t let its unconventionality put you off. It’s been a word-of-mouth success and deservedly so.

The story of the netsuke collection which ceramics expert Edmund de Waal inherits from his great uncle Iggie is in effect the true tale of an extraordinary family who were the equivalent of the Rothschilds, a fabulous dynasty who made their fortune from grain and lived at the pinnacle of society in Paris, Vienna and Tokyo.

The journey of the netsuke collection down through generations of this exuberant, elegant and at times tragic family, is partly the story of the 20th century. As the netsuke pass from one branch of the family to another, author Edmund de Waal unlocks a rolling cast of remarkable, engaging and intensely human characters whose lives are always at the mercy of world events. The book wears its learning and history lightly; but from the beginning you are immersed in a complete -and now vanished - world.

It’s totally engrossing and beautifully written. Spare and understated . A book to lose yourself inside and maybe one of the few books you could read again.

DVD Review — Tron Legacy

Tron Legacy is set 27 years after original :ilm but it really doesn’t matter if you haven’t seen the :irst :ilm as it takes the time to set the scene in this one.

The :ilm follows the young but troubled Sam Flynn who receives a message from his long lost father which he follows into a digital world he thought only existed in the bed time stories his father told him when he was a child. In this world Sam soon :igures out that this world is not the utopia he imagined and he must :ight to save his father and both worlds from a evil threat.

The most impressive thing about this :ilm is certainly the special effects. The digital world in which the majority of the :ilm is based is beautifully imagined and mesmeric and intricate in its creation. However, this does not mean the rest of the :ilm is weak , although the plot is simple the characters are good and well acted, not least of all by the iconic Jeff Bridges and keep an eye out for Martin Sheen, the British actor famed for his portrayal of Brian Clough in The Damned United and Tony Blair in The Queen.

Meat of the Month - May is Spring Lamb

The recipe this month is for Lamb Kleftiko. A personal favourite of mine which reminds me of summer holidays in Greece. This is a really straightforward dish with simple ingredients but the results are fantastic.

Ingredients 1 lamb shoulder cut into 4-6 large portions 2-3 cherry tomatoes for each lamb portion 4 large potatoes, quartered 2-3 small onions quartered 1 lemon cut into wedges 2 garlic cloves per portion

Olive oil Salt and pepper 1 tsp dried oregano 1 tsp dried thyme 4-6 bay leaves Aluminium foil and baking parchment

Method Preheat the oven to a low heat, 150c or gas mark 2 To prepare the lamb place in a large bowl and rub all over with the lemon wedges (retain these for later). Make incisions in the lamb and insert 2 garlic cloves per portion. Add the potatoes. onions and tomatoes and pour in a good gulp of olive oil .

Add salt, pepper, oregano and thyme and mix well using your hands to ensure everything is well coated.

For each lamb portion a parcel is made. To do this cut about 70 cm of foil and lay :lat, then place the same sized piece of baking parchment on top. In the middle, place one portion of lamb and ensure each parcel has an even amount of the other ingredients.

Add the wedges of lemon from earlier and a bay leaf to each parcel. Close the parcels by pulling the corners together and twisting at the top.

Place the parcels in the oven on a baking tray for at least two hours, until the lamb is tender and falling off the bone. Serve with seasonal vegetables such as asparagus, broad beans or a Greek salad.

The Enchantments Of Andalucia May and June is the perfect time of year to visit the Andalucia region in Southern Spain, before the intense heat of high summer. Flights to Malaga, the principle tourist gateway to the region, are abundant from the UK. Within easy striking range of this city are all the beauties and spectacles that Andalucia has to offer.

And no trip to the city is complete without a stroll around the Albaicin – the old town across from the palace – for a glass of wine and a plate of the local paella.

Oranges and sherry are the main produce of Seville. But for the tourist one of the highlights is the Alcazar, anothThe Generalife Gardens er Moorish style palace with stunning gardens. These sit cheek by jowl with the city’s cathedral and its magni:icent tower, the Giraldo, converted from a Moslem minaret.

Close to Seville is Cordova, one of the leading cultural centres of the Islamic world until the 14th century. Among the wonders of this ancient city is the Mezquita, the former mosque, with its striking columns and intricate double arched vaulting.

Cadiz, too, is little distance from Seville, and among its charms are the ornamental gardens that line the promenade, with :ine views towards the Straits of Gibraltar to the south-east and Atlantic Ocean to the west.

Andalucia is a region of marvellous contrasts for the venturous traveller.

Alfreton & District Branch Royal British Legion

In just a few weeks time the Royal British Legion will commemorate its 90th anniversary and the Alfreton & District Branch will be joining others to celebrate our birthday at the spring event of 11/12 June being hosted by Alfreton Town Patron Her Majesty Council. the Queen The Legion in Alfreton is a long established facilitator of aid to the ex-service community with its own case worker who has over 10 years experience of welfare work.

The Legion itself was formed to aid the victims/survivors for the First World War and at its inception did not anticipate the World War that was to devastate another generation. After a second World War, actions in many parts of the globe and right now approximately 10,000 service personnel serving in Afghanistan the Legion is as busy as it was in the 1920’s. The survivors of our “new conflicts” are just as young and just as traumatised as those who served in previous conflicts and those who did not survive are someone’s son or daughter, someone’s husband/wife/partner or friend thus they who did not serve also suffer. The military only take the best material to mould into our professional armed forces, the criteria of join or go to jail is long gone. The training that goes into our armed forces is extensive, therefore our service personnel who enter conflict are as well prepared as the Nation State can make them. All this preparation does not make our forces immune to the casualty list.

The British Legion now has the title of Royal British Legion, however its aims have not changed in the last 90 years and in a nutshell the Legion helps the exservice person and their dependents in the community. All this is achieved by donations made by YOU. The recipients of aid cannot thank all of you, so I do. Please continue to give, the survivors of the conflicts of today will need help for a long time.
