DVD Review - The Fighter

The Fighter is the warts-and-all true story of Micky Wards turnaround from journeyman boxer to Light Welterweight World Champion. While this is a full blooded boxing movie it is really the story about a younger brothers struggle to step out of the shadows of his illustrious sibling and local hero, Dicky Eklund, who is waging his own 2ight against his own demons, not least of which is learning to cope with life after the fame and fortune has dwindled away. As the journey threatens to tear the family apart it is the bonds of kinship that allow the brothers to get past their individual problems and come together to train Micky for the most important 2ight of his life. Christian Bale is brilliant in this 2ilm and completely deserving of the Academy award he received as best supporting actor. Keep an eye out at the end for a clip of the real Micky and Dicky and you will be stunned by how well he played the latter. Also deserving of praise is Melissa Leo, who plays their mother Alice and also received an academy award for best supporting actress. The acting and writing come together to portray a true story that feels truly real and is inspiring in its telling.

Book Review - The Thousand Autumns of 13 Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell Dutchman Jacob de Zoet is sent to Japan at the end of the 18th century to make enough of a fortune for him to marry. In fact he hardly makes it into Japan – he is quartered on a tiny man-made trading station island in the bay of Nagasaki – the only gateway between Japan and the West – and a place which actually existed. The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet is a sort of historical novel-cum-thriller, a tale of good and evil, superstition, love and murder and the story of clashing cultures. But it’s written by David Mitchell – described as “one of the most fascinating and fearless writers alive” and certainly a man who seems to invent new rules of writing with every book. As a storyteller he can’t be beaten; the tale cracks along at a lick. He uses language beautifully, he plays games with the reader, he makes you laugh, he entertains – his prose is streetwise and smart but he also gives you emotional complexity. David Mitchell lived in Japan for several years and has a good feel for how “different” the country is to our own. But by his own admission, he spent months researching the human needs of his novel’s time and place. He creates a lost world of spies and concubines, slaves and colonial westerners. It’s a dazzling bit of storytelling. Enjoy the ride.

Meat of the Month - June is Steak

The recipe this month is for Sirloin Steak with Roquefort Butter. This recipe is perfect for a BBQ with a twist and served with seasonal vegetables such as, grilled aubergines, Jersey Royals and a Rocket and watercress salad.
Ingredients 4 Sirloin Steaks approx. 1 inch thick For the Butter: 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter (softened) 50g of crumbled Roquefort 1/4 teaspoon granulated garlic
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Pinch of Sea Salt 4 Lemon Wedges
Method For Butter: In a bowl combine all the ingredients to make the butter and blend together using the back of a fork until the mixture is evenly distributed. For Recipe: Allow the steaks to rest at room temperature for approximately 30minutes prior to cooking. Once rested, lightly brush both sides of the steak with olive oil and season them with salt and pepper. Grill on BBQ to your preference by cooking in the grill of a very hot BBQ for 2 minutes, leave to sit for 2 minutes and put the other side back on the BBQ for a further 2 minutes. If you like your steak; Rare –Turn the steak over after initial period onto a medium heat section of the BBQ and cook for a further 1 minute on each side Medium - Further 3 minutes on each side Well done - further 5 minutes on each side. Editors Choice This month I had the opportunity to use AB Shuttle to take me to a family wedding. I decided to go with AB Shuttle as the price they quoted was so reasonable and I was really impressed with the excellent service they offer. The 8 seater vehicle was clean and comfortable and it was really useful as it allowed all my immediate family to travel together and save on the cost of individual transport. Both pick-ups were prompt and we got to the wedding in plenty of time - which avoided the usual trauma of getting lost and arriving late. Also, the driver, Andrew, was professionally turned out and very polite, opening doors and dealt with a snarl up at the venue with remarkable patience and good humour.
