Welcome to Amber Valley Voice Hello and welcome to the January edition of Amber Valley Voice. Another Christmas and New Year has flown by in a flurry of activity and a new year is upon us with all that it brings. For me it is a year full of activity and resolutions, which has started briskly but is sure to fizzle out mid-Feb as usual!!! Having said that, it is the year of the Dragon, if you follow the Chinese new year, on 23rd January and the Dragon symbolises success and happiness...so maybe the resolutions will last this year?!!

Don’t forget to mention the Voice when you use any of the companies in this Magazine
January is a notoriously quiet month as the credit card bills start to roll in for most of us, so it is a good time to look into activities of a cash light nature, so please do check out our new feature on pages 17 & 18, which highlights a good local walk (regardless of whether you have a dog or not). We are hoping to continue this feature, so if you have a local walk that you would like us to recommend, please get in contact with us and share the knowledge and exercise! There are a couple of local events this month, see the organ recital on page 12 and the Alpine society sale on page 20, they would really appreciate local support. Finally, remember to keep the updates and reader recommends coming to keep this magazine truly local. Happy Reading! Emily

Book Review Sacred Hearts by Sarah Dunant
15
Sacred Hearts by Sarah Dunant is a great antidote to the winter blues in recession obsessed England – even if it’s to show us that inancial woes are nothing new. This time we’re in Italy in the 16th century where the conditions of the time had a dramatic effect on the lives of one set of women in particular. By the turn of the 16th century, the price of wedding dowries had risen so high that most noble families could not afford to marry off more than one daughter to a fellow nobleman. The result was that the remaining young women - almost half the noblewomen in Italy - were sent to convents where they were forced to become nuns. Life in the convent was dif icult even for those who wanted to be there, so we can only imagine how it felt for those still wedded to the world outside. Windows were bricked up, contact with the outside world was virtually nonexistent. Even music and luxuries such as books and pieces of furniture from home were removed by inspectors. The story of Sera ina, a 16-year-old who had a life and love outside the walls presents us with a compelling tale full of cultural and historical detail but with the pace and suspense of a thriller. Is she fated to a dusty old-age or can she ever return to a life where pleasure is not a sin beyond comprehension? Sarah Dunant’s novel, the third of her Italian historical trilogy, is based on the real history of the time. A former presenter of BBC2’s The Late Show and Woman’s Hour, Ms Dunant is also a Cambridge history graduate, so we’d imagine she knows her stuff. It certainly makes a change from UK 2012.

16 Here at the Amber Valley Voice HQ we are proud dog owners (you may have spotted our furry little nightmare popping up in the magazine from time to time). So we thought we would share some of our favourite walks around the Amber Valley area with our readers. We hope you enjoy the walks and if you have any of your own you would like to share, please let us know by emailing us at info@ambervalleyvoice.co.uk or by calling Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638 Circular walk from Riddings Park, along Pinxton Canal Path (Approx. 4 miles) This is a really good walk to take with your dogs as it offers a range of scenery and lead and non-lead walking. The route is around 4 miles long, taking approx. 1 1/2 to 2 hours. It is undulating but not too taxing and can be easily traversed in a good pair of boots.
The walk begins in Riddings Park. If you cannot walk their easily then there is parking by the community centre entrance on West Street and at the end of Shaw Street both of which are off or near Greenhill Lane. In Riddings Park head towards the bottom field which can be reached by a stile in the far corner of the cricket pitch or through an entrance in the fence located off the path in the wooded area. Using any of the paths, walk down to the bottom right hand corner of this field where there is a gate in the black metal fence. Go through the gate and head right along the footpath Carry on along the footpath as it becomes a road with a wall on the left (Park Mews). At the end of the road turn left onto Church Street Walk on past the Seven Stars and Moulders Arms public houses before taking the first left onto Spring Road and then the first right onto Nottingham Road. Carry on down Nottingham Road for 700 meters. Past a row of houses on your left there will be a short wall then a entrance onto the Pinxton Canal Path through a green metal barrier. The canal path is a soil path and lightly wooded. Walk along the Canal Path for 700 meters, past the Pye Bridge Pond. Just after the signed exit from the canal path, about 10 meters further along, take a left up a set of steps to cross the Main Road and through a gap in the wall on the other side, down a set of steps and back onto another lightly wooded soil path. Walk along this path for approximately 400 meters until you approach a rail bridge. At the bridge turn left along the path which has a metal fence on the right hand side. Follow this path for a little over 100 meters. As the path turns to the left take the path straight on which follows the metal fence. This is a single track grass path, which may be a touch muddy if it has been wet recently., which takes you along the side of the rail track. Carry on along this path for around 750 meters and then cross a fence stile which brings you our onto a wide stone path next to a bridge.
Don’t forget to mention the Amber Valley Voice when responding to Ads
17
Turn left and then walk along the path for around 150 meters before taking a left up a grass path with a hedge on either side. After a little over 100 meters the path ends at Cockshutt Lane, where you turn left Walk along Cockshutt Lane until it ends after around 200 meters. As the road ends it bends around to the left and there is a metal gate and a horse stile. Go through the horse stile and follow the bridle path around to the right and uphill. After approximately 500m the bridle path ends with a gate and a horse stile. Cross the stile and walk down Norman Road past the housing on your right. At the end of the road it meets B600 Lower Somercotes road. Turn right here along the pavement into Somercotes. When possible cross the road and carry on along the pavement until you come to the Black Horse public house, taking a left up Cinder Road. At the end of Cinder Road you come to a set of bollards. Pass through the bollards and turn immediately left, taking the path that has a wall running along the left hand side. Follow the path until the end where you will find yourself back on the footpath behind Riddings park. Re-enter the park through a gap in the black fence. and take any path you choose back through the park.

DVD Review - Captain America, The First Avenger (12)
Having resisted the urge to see this :ilm at the cinema because I wasn’t convinced by the trailers (which usually shows the best bits) and the cast list, I was persuaded to give it a try on DVD after a few people had recommended it...and I’m glad I did!! Captain America, the First Avenger is set in 1940’s USA, during the Second World War. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is a weedy kid who desperately wants to serve his country but is constantly rejected until 6th time lucky, he is spotted by Scientist Dr Erskine (Stanley Tucci) who sees his potential beyond his physical appearance. Once Steve has taken Dr Erskines magic formula, he is transformed physically into the hero he always was inside. After discovering his best friend is in danger, Captain America (Steve) takes up the :ight with Hydra and the evil Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving). Although it could be argued that this :ilm isn’t as strong as some of the Marvel :ilms that have been released in recent years, it is still compelling viewing for all the family. The CGI was particularly impressive which transformed Chris Evans at the start of the :ilm and in fairness, I now believe that the casting was spot on! Keep your eyes peeled after the end credits for a sneak preview of the new Avengers ilm, due to be released in May 2012…..it looks awesome!!!!

Gardeners Calendar - January Keep off the lawn in frozen conditions as you could permanently damage the grass Clear leaves from around alpines, they can create rot. A bit of gritty compost, even at this time of year, will prepare them for spring growth. Mulch bare beds with last year’s leafmould. If you’ve only got leaves from this season they can also be used as mulch, but rake them back before sowing next year.
Top Tip If you’ve stored apples, check them over and throw out any showing signs of rotting or you could lose the whole batch.
