Welcome to Amber Valley Voice Hello and welcome to the July edition of Amber Valley Voice. This is supposedly the summer edition but as the rain continues, summer still seems so far away! Having said that, the excessive rain does mean that I can enjoy all the sport that has been on TV recently, football, tennis, british grand prix...it’s probably the one time in my life that I have been glad NOT to be there!

3

Don’t forget to mention the Voice when you use any of the companies in this Magazine

July welcomes lots of new advertisers and to mention a few, we have training courses in the comfort of your own home from QA Associates and help on pensions and investments from your local independent financial advisors, Swanwick IFA. There is a fantastic recipe from The Bluebell at Farnah Green, which serves amazing food! We also have some community events going on, check out page 9 from the sporting futures team for kids slacklining and free-running events and also on page 9, why not take up archery? It is amazing fun and great news that it is up and running in the local area. See you next month - Happy Reading

11 Leabrooks Interiors based inside Leabrooks Gallery is a natural extension of the Gallery which exhibits a wide range of art works providing interest and character in the stylish home. A stunning painting, however, sometimes needs a pleasing piece of pottery or glass, an colourful cushion or throw to set it off. Equally that special piece of pottery or glass. that tasteful cushion or throw can stimulate an interest in a painting. Which ever form or direction your source of inspiration takes you Leabrooks Interiors can provide you with either a starting or a finishing point. And for those of you wishing to provide your home with unique - or slightly quirky pieces - we have those too! Our collection of decorative items and furniture will be of particular interest to those aiming to achieve the 'wow' factor with their decor! Come and see for yourself!

Editors Choice

I popped into Leabrooks Interiors this month and purchased some wonderful additions to my house! I caught the decorating bug when talking to Carol and visiting the Gallery and after wandering around the Interiors section for a good hour hanging my nose over everything, I selected some beautiful glass wall art which looks stunning. I know that I will be back for further inspiration shortly and with the 10% voucher, everything was excellent value for money. I can’t recommend it highly enough and I find that it is a perfect way to spend a couple of hours to enjoy a cup of coffee and be inspired!

12 This month we have bringing you a nice long walk to help you stretch your legs and make the most of the summer sun (if it ever arrives!) There will be plenty of opportunities to let your dogs off the lead but as always make sure to ensure their safety at all times. As always, if you have a favourite walk of your own why not share it with us by email at info@ambervalleyvoice.co.uk or by calling Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638 7 Mile Circular Walk from Codnor Park Reservoir to Codnor Castle Another great walk for you and your dog it offers a range of scenery and plenty of off-lead walking. The route is fairly long taking about 3 1/2 hours. It is fairly undulating with some uphill sections and the terrain is mixed with some sections which may be best tackled with a sturdy pair of boots.

Park in the free car park that are available in Codnor Park reservoir, located off Coach Road

Take the path at the western end of the car park that leads you along the side of the reservoir. At the end of the reservoir the path meets another. Bear left and continue along the path that runs alongside the canal.

 

At the end of the path you pass through a gate and up a small hill to meet Newlands Road. Turn left and walk past the left side junction for Coach Road then cross the road when safe and take the turn on the right for Coach Road. Carryon along Coach Road. Approximately 1 mile up the road there is a left hand turn, marked by 2 cottages on the corner of the turn. This road takes you up beside the police headquarters.

Just past the entrance to the police headquarters site keep to the right hand side of the road. Take a wide path that heads towards the supermarket. Cross the main road and take the path to the left that takes you alongside the roundabout. Where this path meets the road cross carefully and head down towards a gate which brings you onto a large park area.

Bear to the left around the park. When you reach a skate park keep to the left and take a footpath out of the park into a field.

Head left along the field. When you reach the metal fence turn left and keep to the path that goes around the outside of the industrial estate.

SPECIAL OFFER!!! 50 FREE Messy Mutz poop scoop bags

with every purchase of Millers Complete Dog Food with this coupon

At the far end of the industrial estate the path splits. Take a right and carry on until you meet the road. Cross the road and head left towards the junction with Alfreton Road. Turn right heading up the hill. When safe cross to the left hand side of the road.

Seals Fodder Room, The Mill, High Street, Call us on 01773 602466 Swanwick, Derbyshire DE55 1AA

13

After the large road sign take a jitty with a footpath sign. Follow this path over a number of fields, with the hedge on your left.

After about 3/4 of a mile this will bring you to Castle Lane. Head right along the road until it veers right. Head straight on taking a track down the hill. To your right is Condor Castle. Look for a gap in the hedge where you can walk up to the castle if you wish.

Carry on along the track as it bears around to the left. When you reach some woods on your right enter through a gate and look for a path going right. Take this path until you reach a bridge over the railway. Cross the bridge and turn left onto the footpath in the woods. When the path crosses another path turn left and follow this path along to a stile. Cros the stile and a bridge onto the towpath of the Cromford Canal.

Carry on along the towpathfor approximately 1 mile as it takes you through Ironville and to Codnor Park Reservoir.

At the reservoir keep to the left crossing a small metal bridge back into the car park.

This walk is for illustrative purposes only. The Amber Valley Voice takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

PC Chris Wilkinson (left) is the latest face on the South Normanton and Pinxton Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, joining PC Pete Wilbourne (centre) and PCSO Vicky Hill (right) out on patrol in the local area. The team holds a meeting every three months to bring together partner agencies and the local community to set local priorities and discuss concerns. They involve the police, the councils, fire service, housing associations and many others who can all work alongside local residents to address the issues that matter the most to the community. Recent priorities have included speeding vehicles and parking problems and anti-social behaviour and nuisance motorbikes at South Street recreation ground. They also hold regular drop in surgeries at their police office, based at The Hub, on Shiners Way (off Market Street), South Normanton. Residents are welcome to call in and speak to officers without a prior appointment. Their office is based just next to the reception desk and the team keep an up-to-date list of their available dates on the door. Posters and newsletters will also be put out by the team throughout the area, to help keep local people informed about who they are, how to contact them and what current priorities they are targeting. This month AVV customers are in for a real treat as the Bluebell Country Inn & Restaurant have submitted one of their fantastic recipes for you to try at home…. Of course, if you are a ‘can’t cook, won’t cook’ person like me you can always pop in and try out this dish with all the trimmings, along with many others on the superb menu in a fantastic atmosphere without having to wash up afterwards!

A Taste of Strawberry Panacotta Makes 5 dariole moulds. Ingredients 200ml milk 200ml double cream 100ml strawberry coulis 2oz castor sugar Half a vanilla pod 3 sheets leaf gelatine Method Soak the gelatine in cold water until soft and whilst this is softening, put all other ingredients in a saucepan and bring to the boil. Once boiled, remove from heat immediately and squeeze excess water from gelatine and stir into hot strawberry mixture until dissolved. Divide equally between moulds and set in refrigerator. Ideally, leave overnight to set, then when ready to serve dip each mould into a jug of hot water and gently shake to remove from mould.

20 As the most common cancer in white people, the advice to stay out of the summer sun between 11am and 3pm is probably sensible, but not always practical so covering up with closeweave cloth e.g. a t-shirt is an option. If you choose to use sunscreen instead, there are a few facts you may not be aware of: We know about SPF ratings which indicate the amount of UVB light screened, but screening UVA light is also important and that is measured in the UK with the star system. It is recommended that you “use a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, with at least 4 stars to provide good balanced protection across the UV spectrum” Apply ‘liberally’ - this means 2 coats so bits are less likely to be missed and using at least “2 teaspoons for head, neck and shoulders and 2 tablespoons for whole body” but obviously your size dictates how much you need. Reapply ‘often’ – every 2 hours. If it is a once daily sunscreen –remember it can still be rubbed, sweated or washed off so applying more often is advised. Out of date? – sunscreens are usually out of date after 18 months –so aren’t likely to protect you after that. So what about the risk of Vitamin D deficiency with too little sun? Vitamin D deficiency is linked to rickets, osteomalacia (soft bones), and even some cancers. People most at risk are: · people with naturally brown or black skin · people who wear clothing that fully conceals them · older people who don’t go outside much · pregnant women · breast-feeding babies with vitamin D-deficient Registered Osteopaths mothers and Physiotherapists who · people who avoid the sun can help in relieving your pain Our skin needs, on average, 15 minutes of sunlight in the middle of the day, 2-3 times a week to  Sports Injuries produce enough vitamin D which will then be  Pregnancy stored to keep up doing throughout the winter .  Aches & Pains Any more than that is excreted. DVD Review The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (12A)

21

When a group of British retirees find themselves struggling to fund their retirements they are enticed by the promise of spending their golden years in luxury at the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Of course, as with so many things in their lives up to this point, it doesn’t quite work out that way. The hotel they find is very much in its twilight years and despite the best efforts of the passionate manager Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel) it looks like their stay will be short lived. However, as they adapt to the new world they inhabit, which is so full of colour and life, their experiences help them come to terms with the end of their old lives and the beginning of a new adventure. This film is highly enjoyable, filled with moments that will make you laugh and cry. The plot is simple but well told and the all star cast are fantastic. Each holding their own in delivering performances of genuine class and humour.

Gardeners Calendar - July

Once your philadelphus (mock orange) has finished flowering, cut back flowering wood to encourage new flowering branches next year and stop it growing too large. Feed tomatoes once a week as soon as the first truss has set. Remove side shoots to encourage fruit rather than foliage to develop on trained toms and if you’re growing them outside, pinch out the growing shoots at 5 trusses. If you’re also growing cucumbers you can feed with tomato feed or alternatively, liquid seaweed feed also works well. Make yourself more strawberry plants for next year. – Peg runners down into the soil; they’ll root in about a month and should be ready to separate in about mid to late August.

Top Tip If you’ve got whitefly on your greenhouse plants and don’t want to use a chemical killer, a teaspoon of washing up liquid in a pint of water makes an effective spray. Use a couple of times per week.
