Landlords remove tenants from rental homes through a process called "eviction."

A landlord cannot remove a tenant by changing the locks or shutting off the water without a court order.

Evictions must go through courts where tenants get a chance to defend themselves. There are legal defenses to eviction.

However, these laws are complicated and change often so it is best to

discuss them with a licensed attorney.

If you receive an eviction notice, it is important not to panic. This is the first step in a longer process. If you are served with an eviction lawsuit, read it carefully. You must meet all deadlines and go to all court hearings. Evictions move quickly and it is best to speak to a lawyer as soon as possible.

In some cases, tenants must file an objection within 5 days or they will lose their homes by default.
