Make a Bowl for Empty Bowls
The public is invited to the Grand Marais Art Colony ceramics studio to throw a bowl and hand-build a bowl for the Empty Bowl fundraiser for the Cook County Food Shelf, which will be held Nov. 8 at the First Congregational Church. Registration is required (to make sure there are enough wheels for everyone), as well as a small $5 materials fee. Make-A-Bowl events will be Sundays at 2 p.m. and Mondays at 7 p.m. through Oct. 21. Moguls Grille & Tap Room at Lutsen Mountains is hopping at every season of the year, which is just fine with Chef “Wally,” who loves nothing better than seeing the dining room packed with satisfied customers. “I come out to make sure everyone’s happy,” he said, with a big smile. And they are. Moguls serves up a fantastic cherry-fired prime rib, slowcooked in a smoker for that extra flavor, and it’s a favorite at dinner, he said. The fullservice restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch, too, offering a wide selection of tasty fare.

“We try to keep it to simple Highlands. food, but really, really good food,” he said. “We stick to the basics, and it works.”
Chef “Wally” is Chris Wahlberg, a Twin Cities native who has been cooking in restaurants since he was 16. “I started out at Ciatti’s in Eden Prairie, washing dishes,” he said. It wasn’t long before he was invited to help out on the line, and he cooked there for four years. “It was a lot of fun,” he said. “I like cooking so much, it kind of shows that I was meant to do it. I’ve had warehouse jobs and office jobs, but I always went back to cooking. I like having that feeling of being busy.” After working at Ciatti’s, he got a job at Axel’s Steakhouse in Mendota where he worked for two years, and then he was

hired as a sous-chef at Wilds Golf Club in Prior Lake. The chef there, Anthony Willis, taught him a lot, he said. “He was from Chicago and worked in hotels—all over.”
The Wilds had a restaurant side and a banquet side, and Wahlberg was first assigned to banquet cooking. It taught him a lot of new skills, he said, serving parties and weddings for 300 to 350 people.
His collaboration with Chef Willis continued for eight years. His wife, Lori, began working in the kitchen there, too, and the couple discovered they really liked working together.
At one point, Lori, who is from a small town in Wisconsin, began talking to Chris about moving to a smaller town to

raise their two children. Chris laughs when he talks about how he agreed with his wife that it would good to move, but he was usually too busy to look for another job. So she began the search, and when she found the opening at Moguls, he decided to apply. It’s been a great move, he said. The couple lives in Grand Marais, where their two children, Hailey, 11, and Tyler, 8, go to school. Lori has worked at various positions at Caribou Highlands and Moguls and is a server these days, helping occasionally in the kitchen, which she loves, he said. “When we go home, we don’t talk about work,” he said. “We leave it here and go home and have family time.” Moguls, which is part of Caribou Highlands Lodge on Lutsen Mountains, sees its
customer base fluctuate with the seasons. Summers are usually packed with families, who stay for a week and eat many of their meals at the restaurant. Fall brings more couples to the area, especially honeymooners., golfers and leaf-lookers. Wahlberg said that last week he looked out over the restaurant and realized that most of the couples sitting at the tables were newlyweds. The winter ski season brings a completely different crowd and rhythm to the busy restaurant. Most of the guests are there just for the weekends. The staff takes a deep breath during the week and gets ready for the next rush. It’s a rhythm and job that is very satisfying, Wahlberg said. It’s especially nice to see people come back for more.

October is fabulous leaf month plus art exhibits and studio tours, great music and, of course, Moose Madness weekend.
First up is the Crossing Borders Studio Tour & Sale and the Lake Superior 20/20 Art Tour. This is the final weekend of both tours, which feature open studios with a variety of different artists along Highway 61 from just outside Duluth to Grand Portage (The Crossing Borders Studio Tour), and open studios with 20 experienced and emerging artists within 20 miles of Two Harbors (the Lake Superior 20/20 Art Tour.)
Crossing Borders has been a mainstay in the Minnesota art tour circuit for more than 10 years. 20/20 was just organized this year. Either way, there is a lot of great art to look at this month.
The studios are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Oct. 7.
Cook County artists in the Crossing Borders Tour include woodcut artist Betsy Bowen, raku potter Kristi Downing, clay and stone sculptors Dan and Lee Ross (Lee Ross also creates monoprints) and Ojibwe beadwork Marcie McIntire. Artists in the Crossing Borders Tour are also located in Lake and St. Louis counties. Many of the studios have guest artists exhibiting, too. For more info, visit crossingbordersstudiotour.com.

In fact, Pillsbury Gredzens and Vistilla are also exhibiting their work at the Johnson Heritage Post with Lake County pastel artist, Rosemary Hultman, in a show entitled “Witnessing Nature: Three Personal Journeys” The exhibit continues through Oct. 7. This first weekend in October is packed with other things to see and do, too. Raku artists Richard Gruchalla and Carrin Rosetti return to the back lot at Sivertson Gallery for their very popular raku event. Participants can purchase a tea-bowl, glaze it, watch as it is fired in a raku kiln and take home the finished pot the same day. It’s a fun event which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6. Also on Saturday, the Cross River Heritage Center will host author Jim Gilbert and photographer David Brislance, who collaborated on the book “Minnesota’s Outdoor Wonders.” The book signing will be from 10:20-11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Later that afternoon, Drury Lane Books will hold a Writer’s Salon with poet Roseann Lloyd. She will read from her book, “The Boy Who Slept Under the Stars,” a memoir in poetry. The reading begins at 5 p.m. Free. The public is invited.
Then, at 7:30 p.m. that evening, a special fundraiser to restore “Dawn & Sea,” a painting by George Morrison donated to ISD166 in 1952, will be held at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. The evening will feature music by singer/ songwriter Keith Secola, The Stonebridge Singers, jazz guitarist Briand Morrison with jazz singer Roxann Berglund and blues virtuoso Pete Kavanaugh. Kristin Makholm, director of the Minnesota Museum of American Art, will also speak. The restored George Morrison painting will be one of many of his works that will be featured on a Minnesota Museum of American Richard Gruchalla and Carrin Rosetti will be in the back lot of Sivertson's Gallery at 10 am. Saturday, Oct. 6 for a raku event. Art tour before being

returned to the school. The fundraiser begins at 7 p.m. Oct. 6. All invited. Then on Sunday, Oct. 7, the Make-A-Bowl events for the Empty Bowls fundraiser for the Food Shelf continues. There are two sessions a week through Oct. 21: Sundays at 2 p.m. and Mondays at 7 p.m. Preregistration is required to make sure everyone can try out the potters wheel. Make-A-Bowl is held in the ceramics studio at the Grand Marais Art Colony. The public participation in making bowls for the Empty Bowls fundraiser concludes with the Paint-A-Bowl event at
the Art Colony on Saturday, Oct. 27. No preregistration is required. It begins at 10 a.m. and ends when all the bowls are painted. For more info, call 387-2737.
Also on Sunday, Oct. 7, watercolorist Barb Lundell will be at the Last Chance Gallery in Lutsen from 1-4 p.m. to demonstrate her art. The public is invited. On Oct. 8, the gallery will return to its winter hours and will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Just to back up a little bit, the Heebie Jeebies Family Comedy Music Show will be at
the Grand Marais Public Library at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3. This is a free, family friendly event secured through a grant by the Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. The next weekend, photographer and fine furniture maker, Pete Pestalozzi and watercolor painter, Ilse Siebenschuh, open an exhibit at the Johnson Heritage Post with a reception from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12. This sounds like an interesting show and shouldn’t be missed.
The following weekend is Moose Madness weekend with all kinds of moose shenanigans including a Moose Word Scavenger hunt, the Second Annual Moose Mosey and more. Michelle Hoye, for example, will give a spinning demonstration at The Market on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. See www.grandmarais. com for the complete schedule of all Moose Madness events. Also that weekend, the Grand Marais Art Colony opens its annual Members Show & Sale with a reception from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19. This is always a fun show with paintings, sculpture, weaving, glass, ceramics and more crafted by Art Colony members. It’s also North House Folk School’s Family Weekend. A storyteller will be on campus and a Saturday contra dance with a subset of Over the Waterfall will play. Terrance Smith will be calling. The dance starts at 7 p.m. Michael Monroe will hold two log cabin concerts this month as well. Call 387-2919 for more info and to make reservations. The next weekend, Oct. 27, Kate and Bill Isles will perform at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. The event is a fundraiser for the North Shore Music Association and includes a silent auction, which starts at 6 p.m. The music starts at 7:30 p.m.

Home Heat from the Forest By Ada Igoe As outside temperatures drop, wood smoke begins wafting through the Cook County skies. Local residents clamber on rooftops to clean the chimney before the winter heating season starts in earnest and take inventory of this year’s supply of firewood. For most wood-burning homeowners in Cook County, the wood pile out back is predominantly composed of birch with some aspen and maple. “We burn aspen during the shoulder seasons,” said homeowner Kent Jones. “We generally burn birch during the coldest time of winter, but we burn local maple overnight during the very coldest nights.” While how much wood needed to heat a home each season will depends on house size and personal wood-burning habits, Cook County homeowners seem to use an average of three cords of firewood per season. A cord is Minnesota’s legal definition for firewood. According to the Minnesota Department of Commerce, “One cord is 128 cubic feet in four-foot lengths. If the wood is sawed, a cord is 110 cubic feet when ranked, or 160 cubic feet when thrown loosely into a truck. Words like truckload, face cord, rick, fireplace cord, or pile, have no legal definition.” Homeowners have many things to consider when purchasing firewood. The most economical option is purchasing uncut, un-split lengths directly from loggers. However, other costs, such as delivery expenses, the cost of fuel for a chainsaw and splitter and the time needed to process your own firewood should be considered if opting to buy your firewood in lengths rather than pre-split. “We liked to buy firewood at $80 per cord un-split, but we found that with the cost of splitting, it was better to go to cut, split wood at $190 per cord,” said Michael O’Phelan, owner of Cascade and Solbakken Resorts. Currently, the cost for a cord of split, cut firewood in Cook County is between $190-200. There are many firewood suppliers in the county and the finding the supplier that’s right for you tends to be a word-of-mouth process. “The best way to ensure a reasonable price is to ask around,” said Tom Fiero,

who’s been heating his home with wood for more than 20 years. “Ask different suppliers and ask your neighbors what they pay. Cheapest isn’t always best.” When you start contacting local firewood vendors, O’Phelan recommends you ask questions such as: Is it dry? How small is it split? Is it from our region? “Ask when the wood was cut,” adds Fiero. “Trees are often cut in winter and may sit around for several months until they’re cut into chunks and split. This may be okay if you get firewood delivered in the spring, but if you wait until later in summer or fall, the wood may have started to rot.” It’s generally recommended that firewood is purchased one year in advance of when it will be burned to allow the wood to dry completely. Fiero said he likes to have his wood stacked by early July so it has three months of warm weather to dry. According to Firewise, firewood should be stored 30 – 100 ft away from your home. Jones said it’s important to master the art of stacking so you don’t have to deal with the hassle of fallen woodpiles or collapsed shed walls. If you don’t have a
woodshed, Jones recommends covering firewood stacks with plywood scraps rather than tarps.
“It’s hard to get the wood to dry properly under a tarp and it’s hard to lift them when there’s three feet of snow on top,” he said. In addition to making sure your firewood’s all stacked properly before the snow flies, you’ll also want a good supply of kindling on hand for starting fires on cold winter nights, Jones said.
While almost all households have a secondary heat source such as propane or electricity, firewood remains a favorite fuel source in Cook County. Or, as the saying goes, "It heats multiple times...cutting it, splitting it, stacking it and burning it."
“We love heating with wood,” said Jones. “It’s a local, renewable resource that keeps us warm during our long winters. It’s such a grounding, enjoyable experience to sit in front of the stove and read, or talk or eat. We can’t imagine doing it any other way.”

“It’s primarily due to my parent’s health,” says Tyson Cronberg. “The business is their major asset, so the sale will allow them to stay in their home.”
The Beaver House is known to anglers and non-anglers alike as the building with a monstrous walleye sticking out of it. The walleye was created by local artist Jim Korf and has drawn curious visitors into the Beaver House for more than 20 years. Once inside, they found a fishing shop like no other. In addition to an eclectic, yet comprehensive tackle selection, there were shelves with old bottles, antiques and one-of-akind items, like a homemade “walleye call.” When it came to tackle, if you couldn’t find it anywhere else, most likely they had what you were seeking at the Beaver House. They also had an impressive selection of hand-made spinners and live bait rigs, including the Cronbergs’ signature Beaver Flicks, which are guaranteed to catch fish. Cronberg said his father, Bill, and his uncle, the late Guyal Anderson, bought the building, formerly housing a co-op, in 1964. They started a shoe repair and clothing retail business. During the long winters, they began making fishing lures, which they soon found attracted more customers than clothes and shoes. “Guys were standing in line to get the lures, so they decided to focus on the fishing business,” says Cronberg.

Danger in the Air Foundation, Fire Department, Fund Carbon Monoxide Device By Jim Boyd Lynn and Greg Barringer had dreams of a retirement home on the North Shore, where they could enjoy the woods, water, wildlife and wilderness. What they got wasn’t a dream. It was a nightmare. It started in August 2011, when the Barringers made the move from Wisconsin to the McFarland Lake vacation home her family had owned for more than three decades. “It’s the last house on McFarlane,” Lynn said. “I spent a lot of my life up there. ” At first, the place was everything they’d hoped. The initial clue that something was amiss came when they returned in October from an extended absence. “We’d hired a sitter to stay with the pets (two dogs and a cat),” Lynn said. “When we returned, I noticed that the animals coats weren’t shiny, and their eyes had all kinds of matter in them.” Lynn left for Equador in November, feel-

ing ill and fatigued. “But after two weeks in Equador, I was feeling fabulous, better than I’d ever felt.” Meanwhile, Greg, at home on McFarland, reported headaches that wouldn’t respond to aspirin, plus chronic sleepiness. When Lynn returned, her symptoms came too. “We were both feeling extreme fatigue, we both had flu-like symptoms, both had shortness of breath. My eyes also were very dry.” Greg began to experience chest pains.

Both Lynn and Greg consulted doctors, who agreed that carbon monoxide was a possibility, but also agreed that, with the new detectors in place, it wasn’t a large one. And neither the clinic nor the hospital had the equipment to check carbon monoxide levels in the Barringer’s blood. So the Barringers suffered through the winter getting sicker and sicker, doing Internet research to try to understand what was happening. By April 11, 2012, they concluded that they were indeed suffering from lengthy exposure
to low-level carbon monoxide poisoning, deadly over time but at levels too low to activate their detectors. By that point, they were gasping for breath. They called 911. They were told that Cook County lacked the equipment to diagnose carbon monoxide poisoning, and would they like ambulance transport to Duluth? Because of their pets, they declined. Instead, they shut off their propane furnace, the only possible CO culprit, and opened all the windows. Within days, some of their symptoms began to disappear, starting with the headaches. Terry Spieker, assistant fire chief of the
Hovland Fire Department, came to call. Spieker is a retired fireman from Willmar,B MN, and more informed than most about carbon monoxide: He developed the CO awareness campaign for Wilmar and lost a a brother-in-law to CO poisoning. p Spieker concurred with the Barringer’s self-d diagnosis. He also picked up on the absencem in Cook County of equipment to check COt levels in someone’s blood. Had that equipment been available, it’s highly likely the Barringers would have been tested—givend their symptoms—when they first consultedi doctors months earlier. Another Hovland fireman, Keck Melby,fl suggested that the department buy the miss-g ing equipment. Not only would it be good toa have available for testing people like the Bar-o ringers, but it also would be helpful for test-a ing firefighters who’ve spent time in burningb buildings. The problem was cost: $4,500, which the( a Hovland Fire Department didn’t have. B An approach was made to the North Shore Health Care Foundation, which liked the idea so long as the equipment, a MasimoJ Rad-57 oximeter, was made available to allt county fire departments. It was agreed that the foundation would put up $3,500 if coun-e ty fire departments would put up the rest.P When an appeal to other departments failedf to generate support, the Hovland departmenth agreed to front the remaining $1,000 and tryP to recoup it later.

Puppy Play Day
Dogs (and Owners) love it By Joan Farnam Grand Marais might not have a dog park, but it does have a puppy play day for a group of dogs (and their owners) who meet every week to frolic in the sun. On this day, it was happy pandemonium in a fenced-in area in Grand Marais. The five dogs, ranging from fluffy white Elsie to Tanka, a giant German shepherd, raced around each other and their owners playing tag and pounce and just joyously enjoying the beautiful fall day. On the surface, it just looked like the dogs (and their owners, who seemed to be having as much fun) were just playing in the grass. But there was purpose behind this. “It’s our underground puppy play time,” Jeri Persons said. “Karina Roth and I started the play day about a year ago.” Roth’s dog, Ruby, is a shelter dog and needed to learn how to socialize with other dogs. Person’s dog, Luke, on the other hand, is a friendly, outgoing dog and it seemed like he’d be a perfect dog for Ruby to get to know, Persons said. “Luke was kind of like the social therapy dog.” “Ruby didn’t seem to know any of the rules.” Roth said, as she patted her beautiful longlegged, high-energy dog. “She had to learn to respect boundaries.” When Elsie, for example, a cute little white fluffy dog owned by Courtney Johnson and Jennifer Stoltz, first entered the group, she was scared of Ruby. “Elsie was afraid of Ruby for a long time,” Stolz said. But on this day, Elsie and Ruby looked like best friends, challenging each other, racing around in a circle and just having a great time. The owners said the play day has had other benefits as well. “Everybody’s dogs have become better behaved around strange dogs,” Courtney Johnson said.

“It’s really helped,” said Patty Doherty, whose rescue dog, Pete, has benefited by contact with other dogs in a controlled environment. So has Tanka, Jan Attridge’s German shepherd. He acts like the baby sitter for everyone, she said. He’s big and gentle and the other dogs seem to respect him. “He just loves playing with all of them,” she said. But Tanka also had an issue with barking at every dog he saw from the back seat of her car. That’s changed now, she said. “He’s pretty much stopped barking at other dogs,” she said. There have been other behavioral changes as well. Elsie, for example, is much better off the leash now than she was before the play day experience, Stolz said. “And everybody’s dog has become better behaved around strange dogs,” Johnson said. So the goal of the play day has been achieved for these dogs. But opening the play day to every dog in town wouldn’t work, Persons said. Dogs, like people,

need time to get to know each other, and the play day has been organized so that new dogs are introduced slowly. On the other hand, it would be great if Grand Marais had a dog park, or a designated fenced-in area where dogs could be off their leashes and play together, she said.

a fire or other incident where CO might be an issue. In seconds, a sensor clipped to a finger measures CO concentrations. Spieker appealed to his former colleagues in the Willmar Fire Department and received $250. The Hovland department is still seeking donations to further defray the Rad-57 costs (Hovland Fire Department CO Fund, Box 268, Hovland, MN 55606). As for the Barringers, they have had the gas
furnace in their house replaced. They discovered that the old furnace was 32 years old and had received minimal maintenance. But they still are recovering from the health effects of such long exposure to low levels of carbon monoxide. They’ve since learned that some of the health effects can be permanent. Too, if you suffer from other chronic illnesses—as Lynn Barringer does—the presence of low-level CO makes the chronic illness worse. Of those CO detectors that lulled the Bar-
ringers, and their doctors, into discounting CO poisoning, Lynn advises purchasing more expensive detectors that will sound an alert at lower levels of CO exposure—if, say, 35 ppm is recorded over several hours. That is generally regarded as the threshold at which, over time, you start to suffer ill effects. The Barringers’ detectors would show CO levels too low to cause an alarm, but only if a button were pushed. Once they pushed that button, they discovered they were living with 57 ppm.
The North Shore Health Care Foundation also seeks help so it can continue to make grants such as this one for the county Rad57 oximeter. The foundation’s single largest source of income for its grants comes from its annual golf tournament at Superior National. flint Trail. “We had the ice business until this year,” he explained. “When we decided to give it up, it was a big relief to know I didn’t have to make ice this spring.” For customers, Tyson has long been a familiar face in the Beaver House. His brother, Marty, currently lives in Chicago, but has been involved in the business and comes in now and then to help out. His sisters Bambi (Wiki) and Jenni (Morawitz) have worked there, too. His nephew, Steve, built the Beaver House website. Many other family members were involved over the years, too. A number of Grand Marais boys, now grown men, worked at the Beaver House as well, including Shane Smith, Barry Pederson, Stacy Houglum, Jared Smith, Curtis Blake, Matt Blake, Ben Larson and Tom LaFreniere.

He isn’t sure what he’s going to do next spring, when the Beaver House won’t be opening for business. The family is continuing the Beaver House website, where they sell fishing tackle. Tyson is considering becoming a fishing guide or simply teaching people to fish. “After all, teaching people about fishing is what I’ve always done,” he says. At this writing, the Beaver House building was still in the process of a sale. The walleye in the wall is being sold with the building and hopefully will continue to be a downtown Grand Marais landmark.
