A MESSAGE

FROM LEADERSHIP A plan for the future Strategic planning is defined as an organization’s process of defining its strategy and making decisions for allocating its resources to pursue this strategy.

Developing a well-defined and thought-out strategic plan for company growth has many advantages and aligns all employees to work towards meeting these goals. Too often, busy company leaders get caught up in the day-today operations, and don’t spend sufficient time planning the future goals of the company or mapping out a strategy to achieve these goals.

Strategic planning has many benefits, including: •

Identifying the company’s values, which helps define the company’s culture

•

Providing clarity for the company’s mission, goals, and future direction

•

Determining how we differentiate ourselves from our competition

•

Providing alignment among all employees so we are all working towards the same goals

•

Developing measurable and manageable objectives

•

Defining the action steps necessary to achieve the company’s goals

Omega’s previous strategic plan was developed in 2018 and through many blessings and hard work, we exceeded the goals of the original plan.

From the Peer Group employee surveys in November, we received great feedback and very positive information. Some of the feedback included questions related to our growth and clarity for the future of the company. We heard your concerns, and as many of you are aware, the majority shareholders and division vice presidents spent two days last week working on Omega’s strategic plan and vision for the future.

In our meeting, we analyzed Omega’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. We began to develop a plan for the company’s resources and future needs for achieving our maximum potential. The team agreed that it is important for us to grow the company. We also agreed it is important to follow a planned and controlled growth, not just pursue growth for growth’s sake.

Over the next few years as Omega experiences change and growth, we want to make sure the changes and growth do not come at the expense of compromising our values or culture. The family atmosphere we have maintained is so important to all of us, and is the primary reason we enjoy working at Omega.

We have enjoyed a very successful past and together have developed a company that is well-positioned for the future. It is an exciting time for Omega Construction – solid company foundation, embedded company culture, great employees, financially sound, strong management team, and strong field team.

In the next few months, we will be introducing the Omega 2025 Strategic Plan. We are excited about the future and the direction in which we are headed. Stay tuned!

BUILDING LEGACIES

Legacy: something transmitted by, or received from, a predecessor

setting the standard At Omega, we love building things, whether it’s new construction, a new experience in an old space, memories, relationships, teams, trust. We are innovators, seeking new ways to give back to the community in which we live and work. We are investors, giving our time and energy to personal and professional growth. We are dreamers, seeing a future where we look back over our lives and smile, realizing we held nothing back; we gave life our “all”. All these efforts and commitments funnel into the legacy we leave behind and hopefully inspiration moving forward. It is in this spirit, the Omega family honors two men who embody this idea of building legacies: Barry Hennings and Kim Matthews, Kirk’s dad. Both men were recently inducted into the Forbush High School “Hall of Fame” in East Bend, NC. We honor Kim and Barry for their accomplishments across the years, are so proud of them and their contributions to our lives.

BARRY HENNINGS Barry grew up in East Bend, NC where he attended Forbush High School. He graduated in 1980 as top five in his class, received the Forbush High School Scholastic Award, and was named the Most Valuable Player in basketball. For years Barry was synonymous with “basketball”. In three years of playing varsity basketball for Denny Key Sr., he was 2x All-Conference, Conference Player of the Year, 2x All Tri-County, Tri-County Player of the Year, 2x All-Northwest, runner-up for All-Northwest Player of the Year, and Most Valuable Player of the renowned Frank Spencer Holiday Tournament, where he led the eighth-seeded Falcons to an exciting runner-up finish in the 1979 tournament. Barry also played baseball and football and was voted ‘Falcon of the Year’ in 1980, as Forbush’s top male athlete. He was the Junior Class President, Most Outstanding Senior, President of the National Honor Society, and participated in the Student Council, Monogram Club, Jazz and Marching Bands. Barry graduated from North Carolina State University as Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He also attained an executive education degree from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, is a licensed General Contractor in nine southeastern states, achieved LEED AP designation, and is currently the President & CEO of Omega Construction. He is very active in Yadkin County, having served as President of the Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Planning Board. Barry and his wife, Penny, have two children, Barrett and Parkley, who both also received ‘Falcon of the Year’ awards. He and his family have been avid supporters of Forbush High School, and they were very proud to honor him with induction into the class of 2022 “Hall of Fame”.

KIM MATTHEWS Dr. Kim K. Matthews, Kirk’s Matthew’s dad, devoted his life to serving the students and people of Yadkin County. While at Forbush High School, he was a three-sport athlete, male “Falcon of The Year”, and class president in 1974. Kim played football and baseball for Lenoir Rhyne University and graduated with a degree in Intermediate Education. He began his teaching career at West Yadkin Elementary and taught until 1987 when he transitioned into administration. Kim was the Assistant Principal at West Yadkin until 1989, when he became the Assistant Principal of Forbush High School. He was a teacher, coach, and leader in Yadkin County Schools for twenty-two years before moving to the WinstonSalem/Forsyth County school system. In 2007, Kim served as a professor, advisor, and chair of N.C. Teaching Fellows at Lenoir Rhyne University. He retired in 2016 to spend more time with his family - particularly his grandchildren - and to raise cows. Kim was a lifelong teacher, inside and outside the classroom, and made a profound difference in the lives of his students and many others. Dr. Matthews was also inducted into the Forbush High School class of 2022 “Hall of Fame”.

Omega has increased its company match to 5%, meaning that Omega will match a participant 1.67% if the participant saves 5% to their retirement account. You can receive the match whether your account is a traditional account or a Roth account. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our Aprio Retirement Plan Advisor Team to discuss your account.

omega TRUST academy november 7-11 Hotel Indigo Omega Construction hosted the Family Business Institute’s Peer Group Meeting in November at Hotel Indigo in downtown Winston-Salem. We were proud to showcase our previously completed renovation of the historic building to a group of national industry leaders during the five-day conference. The raving employee reviews and a binder dubbed “the new gold standard for future meetings” highlighted Omega’s strengths and successes.

The Executive Team also took away points for suggested improvements and looks forward to implementing them in 2022.

Our TRUST Academy is continuing to work through the construction divisions set out under the Master Format by CSI (Construction Specifications Institute). Our next scheduled module is set for February 17th, 2022, and we will complete the concrete division.

Somehow, I had my third anniversary this past November. I haven’t been sent packing yet.

Why did you join Omega?

I knew Todd Mayo and his passion for Omega. I wanted to be a part of that team.

What do you love most about Omega?

The family; I can text or call my division’s vice president, the company President, or the CFO at any given time, and get real insight and wisdom on anything.

Who inspires you?

My children. Especially my oldest son, Mac, who battles a very rare genetic condition.

George Washington or John Adams.

How do you define success?

Never quitting. Michael Jordan said, “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life, and that is why I succeed.”

What’s one thing - industry-related or not - you learned in the last month?

I witnessed the creation of a “post-tension slab” when the Montgomery Street crew had us on site a few weeks back.

What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?

I recorded an album at Grammy Award-winning producer, Paul Worley’s studio, Skyville Records, in Nashville, TN. He discovered the Dixie Chicks and Lady Antebellum, to name a few. I played his Martin guitar on that album, which was the same one used by Hank Williams Jr. in the opening of “A Country Boy Can Survive.” There’s a picture of me playing it in the studio that I will have to find!

How long have you been a member of Omega?

I’ve been with Omega for ten years this March.

Why did you join Omega?

I worked with Barry and Greg previously, at J.S. Clark. When they left and went to Omega, they offered me a job, also.

What do you love most about Omega?

The family atmosphere and the opportunity for advancement.

Who inspires you?

My family.

How do you define success?

Completing your job on time and within budget, then being ready for the next one.

What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?

I love antique cars and riding motorcycles.

omega Goes pink!

In October, Omega employees supported those impacted by breast cancer by going pink! Pink attire was worn each Wednesday in October, and funds were donated to The American Cancer Society to combat the disease which impacts 1 in 8 women in America. Breast Cancer became the most common cancer globally as of 2021, by the World Health Organization, accounting for 12% of all new annual cancer cases worldwide. Omega is proud to contribute to efforts seeking a cure.

At Omega, we have four divisions: Triad, Retail, Industrial, and Savannah. Vice Presidents oversee divisional projects, team members, and marketing initiatives. Omega sincerely thanks each Vice President for the significant contributions they make each day. We are proud of the leadership in place and highlight recent divisional achievements. Let’s hear from Matthew Cave, Vice President of the Triad Division.

What a year 2021 was for all of us as we continue to battle the effects of the global pandemic, price increases on materials, and unprecedented lead times. These continuous challenges created scheduling nightmares for everyone involved in our projects. Keeping our owners and partners informed in these trying times through good team communication efforts has been the key to our continued success.

The Triad Division has been busy this year completing many different projects in various market sectors. The WinstonSalem Theatre Alliance, Lowes Foods, Target, Dialysis Center, The Fresh Market, and Tommy’s Carwashes were a few of those completed, as well as several office renovations, medical-office upfits, and industrial projects.

In the construction industry, we continually work ourselves out of a job by diligently working to complete our projects on time. To offset project completions, we need to continuously increase our backlog. Our team has done a great job securing projects for the upcoming year with the award of new projects including charter schools, Tru Hotel, Home 2 Suites, and Lowes Foods. Renovations of Target, medical

facilities, retail shopping centers, car washes, and industrial warehouses also added to our backlog, and we are happy to report there are several more on the horizon.

Adding projects and securing backlogs require us to grow our team to ensure project success. We have added some great people to the Omega family this year. The Triad Division is happy to welcome Alex McGrath as a Superintendent; Jamie Smith as an Assistant Superintendent; Matthew White and David Howell as Field Engineers; and Jaklyn Pierce as a Project Engineer to the team this year.

All indicators suggest 2022 will be another busy year for Omega as we work to deliver successful projects to our customers and be active participants in our personal lives.

Thinking and planning for these commitments reminds me of my grandparents saying, “The older you get, the faster the time will go by.” This wisdom is now a reality for me, so I encourage you to take the time to enjoy every minute and make the most of life. I appreciate everyone’s efforts and wish you all a great 2022!

ALWAYS PUTTING SAFETY FIRST Ladder Safety To protect against possible falls resulting in injury, death, or electrocutions, please practice ladder safety on job sites. Hazards can be avoided, and risks greatly reduced by simply following safety guidelines, like the ones listed below. “Extension ladders” are defined as portable ladders, having two sections operating as brackets, for adjusted lengths. A “stepladder” is defined as a short folding ladder with flat steps and a small platform.

These everyday tools will be present on job sites and should be used with caution.

Face the ladder when climbing up or descending

Ladder should extend 3 feet above the landing

Be aware of overhead power lines

•

Inspect the ladder before use, removing damaged ladders from service

PROJECT SPOTLIGHTS

THE GROVE, PHASE TWO (SOUTHBLOCK) SAVANNAH, GA Phase Two is underway at this Savannah multi-family jobsite.

Phase One included beautifully constructed residences, sitting on the site of the former Abercorn Terrace Apartments, between 61st and 63rd Streets, in Midtown Savannah. Phase Two consists of eighty-nine 3-story units, a maintenance shop, and a clubhouse with a pool. Omega worked with architects in a design-assist role, as well as project management to implement site improvements that included demolition, abatement, storm system, sewer system, and fire and water lines. The 83,704-square-foot project is expected to house Savannah College of Art and Design students, and is slated for completion this summer.

PUBLIX #1706 AND RETAIL SHOPS BURLINGTON, NC Omega’s latest new construction is located on the former Sears site in Burlington, NC. The Retail Division recently completed the new construction of a 49,100-square-foot Publix and several Retail Shops at Church Street Commons in Burlington, NC. The 9.6-acre property, formerly the site of Sears department store, welcomes Publix, My Eyelab, The Habit Burger Grill, Aspen Dental, Popeye’s, uBreakiFix, and Church Street Nails. The project, one of many with the Omega team, was completed in December.

NORTH DAVIDSON DIALYSIS CENTER WINSTON-SALEM, NC Omega’s Triad Division recently added a new medical facility to its growing portfolio.

The new North Davidson Dialysis Center, operated by Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, is located in Davidson County, NC, and provides twenty-six dialysis treatment stations. Infrastructure and expansion areas are already under roof to add an additional twenty-four treatment stations. This new facility incorporates a home health care training center, along with physician, dietary, administrative, and support staff areas. The project is slated for completion in February.
