WHEN LIFE FALLS A
Bad Happens. It’s a fact. Everyone experiences it. There’s a popular bumper sticker that puts it more crudely. But it is still a fact. Children get horrible diseases. Some get abducted. People are killed in accidents. We can’t escape it. At some point we will either experience tragedy personally or be close to one that does. In the past few weeks, our community has been reeling from a tragic incident involving our local police and woman in her sixties. The family and friends are suffering tremendous grief. We pray and ask for comfort. But that doesn’t answer the question of “Why?” Why does a loving God allow such horror to happen? This is one of the BIG questions of faith. In fact, many either leave their faith or never come to God at all because of this very question. Although I cannot give a simple answer to this monumental question in the space provided, it is important to address it. Countless volumes have been written to attempt to answer this from a theological perspective. It is easy to toss out belief in any “god” when confronted with the experience of tragedy, but I believe there are a few things to consider. Randy Alcorn outlines several responses to the question of “How can a Good God allow evil and suffering?” The Bible attributes the origin of human evil to people exercising their free will; when they choose to disobey God's standards, it brings suffering. God said "You can eat the fruit of every other tree, but if you eat from this one, you will surely die" (Gen. 2:16-17). The Bible says "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). We are free to choose, but there will be severe consequences if we choose to disobey. The first man and woman chose that path, and when they did evil, death and suffering kicked in. The Bible teaches that the whole earth

was under man's dominion and care, and that not only man, but animals and all creation suffered the effects of human sin. Thus, one of human sin's consequences is a disordered creation, including natural disasters. But the greatest tragedies of history, which have caused the most suffering, are not natural disasters, but wars and persecutions and murders conducted by sinful human beings. To argue that God should not permit evil or suffering is to argue against human beings having free choice. Is moral freedom good? Is it right that people have the ability to choose for themselves? Or would it be better if human beings were choiceless, mechanistic robots who walked around and did good because we had no other choice? If God had made us without the ability to choose, wouldn't we resent him for that too? Actually, we wouldn't, but only because we wouldn't have the capacity to criticize Him. According to the Bible, when we question God we're exercising the same freedom of choice as when we choose good or evil. We're having this discussion only because God has created us with a freedom to make choices. What does freedom mean? Doesn't it necessarily involve the capacity to choose evil? Of course. You cannot have true freedom of choice if you can only choose good but not evil. The freedom to choose is sacred in this society. Isn't it ironic to blame God for giving us the very freedom we so highly prize? Ask yourself this question: If you were God, how would you have created people differently? Would you have withheld from people the capacity to make wrong choices as well as right ones? If you would have,
then human beings—as we know ourselves to be—would not exist.
To argue that God should not permit evil or suffering is to argue against human beings having free choice. The things we consider the greatest virtues would not be known in a world without evil and suffering. Here's a short list of desirable qualities: compassion, mercy, heroism, courage, justice, sacrifice. Think about it. Could there be... Compassion without suffering? Mercy without need? Heroism without a desperate plight? Courage without danger? Justice without injustice? Sacrifice without compelling cause for it? Which great virtues could be seen in a world without suffering or evil? Don't most if not all of the greatest virtues come into play in response to evil and suffering? If you could snap your fingers and remove all evil and suffering that has ever happened, would you? If you did, there could be no Hellen Keller, Frederick Douglas, Sojourner Truth, Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, Corrie ten Boom or William Wilberforce (who abolished England's slave trade). We must not minimize suffering. But we must also admit that we praise the virtues that have emerged from suffering—and in so doing we make an unspoken recognition, that good can come out of suffering.

Short-term evil and suffering sometimes accomplishes long-term good. The Bible shows God using evil deeds for his good purposes, deeds done through the willing actions of moral creatures. For instance, Joseph's brothers sold him into slavery. It was a terrible evil, and God held them accountable. But many years later Joseph has risen to power in Egypt, and under his guidance they have stored up huge amounts of grain to survive a great famine. Citizens of Israel and other nations came to Egypt to get grain. Joseph said to his brothers who sold him into slavery, "You intended it for evil, but God intended it for good—to save many lives." (Genesis 50:20). God can and does use human acts of evil—and the suffering that comes out of it—for other people's good. The book of Romans says "we rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” cont. on pg. 5 - APART

It was a beautiful summer night in Chicago just before 7 PM as I walked into Division 11 of the Cook County Department of Corrections. I have been preaching there once a week for the last 18 years. There are 10,000 men, and 1,500 women locked up behind hundreds of thousands of tons of cement and steel. On 96 acres, it’s the largest county jail in the United States.A city within a city, it has almost 4,000 thousand employees and it’s own hospital.Al Capone was once one of it’s most notorious “guests" in the 1930's. In 1971, blues legend B.B. King recorded an album there appropriately titled: B.B. King—Live at Cook County Jail. Division 11 is the newest addition to the jail. It is called “Super Maximum Security.” This is where they keep the highest bond and no bond inmates. These men are charged with the most heinous and violent crimes. Once inside I have to take the elevator up to the third floor to the Security Office to sign in. The officers will then escort the men who want to come to the chapel. As I’m approaching the security office, I see an officer sitting at his desk that I have not seen for some time. That’s because they are transferred from division to division just to “keep things on the "up and up.” I have known this particular officer for the last 18 years. Every time I run into him (He’s like a Mack truck) he’s taken every opportunity to test me. He mocks me, he mocks Christianity, and he mocks God! As I walk in, he stands up, assumes
the stance of a weight lifter about to try out for the world’s record. You know, leaning slightly forward, arms hanging down slightly curled in, flexing his mussels, sort of like a turkey spreading its wings to show off. In a loud voice, with his eyes fixed on me he barks confidently to the two officers across the room, “The Christians are here call out the lions!” Without hesitation, I replied, “Sergeant, I’d like to remind you that it was 2,000 years ago that the Roman government was feeding Christian’s to the lions, and we have the incredible perspective of being able to look back over 2,000 years of recorded history and what do we see?” Getting louder and bolder, I said, “There are more Christians alive at this moment, then the total number of people that made up the Roman Empire over it’s entire 500 year history, and the lions and the tigers are on the endangered species list. We’re not afraid of lions, bring em’ on!” I looked at the two officers in the corner and their mouths were open so wide they could have eaten a banana sideways! The sergeant, slightly discombobulated, broke the silence with the order to, “Call chapel!” What is the moral to this story? Simply this: When you’re right about God and you’re right with God you never have to be intimidated by the world, the flesh, or the devil himself, and it’s okay to get excited about Jesus! Fashioned by God's hands, Adam and Eve were perfect--for a while. I like the rags-to riches stories of Ruth and Boaz and Esther and King Xerxes. There are stories that make me squeamish, too, like Hosea and his bride and Ruben and his daughter-in-law. God specializes in the unusual. In fact, the whole process of a Jewish wedding would seem unusual to us, but in it we see a love story written to reveal the plans God has for us as individual believers and as a body, the church. A Jewish father chose the bride for his son. In His extreme way, God chooses us--clothed in the rags of our sin, poor, wretched, blind. This mass of humanity He offers to His sinless Son. The Jewish maiden could accept or reject the proposal, and we, too, can accept or reject God's offer of intimacy. Next came the betrothal, much

like an engagement party. A binding promise was made, and a cup of wine was lifted up and drunk to seal the betrothal. We remember that Jesus lifted up a cup during Passover, knowing that soon He would be lifted up on a cross. He would suffer for us and seal a new covenant with us. A marriage contract was then drawn up stating that the bride was to be provided and cared for in every way. All her needs were to be met by the bridegroom. The contract was signed before two witness and given to the bride and her father. Scripture is our wedding document and in it are all the wonders our bridegroom is doing and will be doing for us. After the betrothal ceremony, the bridegroom went back to his father's house having first pledged that he would return for the bride. He was to prepare a place for the wedding and a home for his new bride. When the father saw that the preparations were ready, at a time known only to him, he gave his son the go-ahead to get his bride. What a wonderful time of celebration then followed! Is anything more exciting than being the bride of Christ? Our Father, the extreme wedding planner has removed our sin-stains and provided our cleansing, our clothing, and our confidence. His Son is coming back, and we will go to be with Him forever. What great love the Father has lavished on us! Let's celebrate!

(cont. from cover) One effect of suffering is to draw people to God. 2 Cor. 1:8-9 says we endure suffering "in order that we should not trust in ourselves but in God, who raises the dead." Corrie ten Boom, from the depths of a concentration camp, wrote: "No matter how deep our darkness, He is deeper still." Suffering is many things, but in the end it is God's invitation to us to trust Him, and to look forward to a place where all suffering will forever be replaced by Joy—Heaven. In light of that, we need to understand exactly how we can get to heaven. The Bible says it's our responsibility to admit that we're at fault for our share of the evil and suffering in this world. It says "If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us of all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). It says, "if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." (Rom. 10:9-10) We're told there's no work we can do to contribute to salvation. "For by grace you have been saved by faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God; not by works, lest any man should boast."

(Ephesians 2:8-9) How many ways are there to get to the Father in heaven? Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father but by me." (John 14:6) That's an exclusive statement, and therefore not a popular one. It's not politically correct these days. But Jesus said it. And I believe Him. Do you? People spend their lives moving from person to person, relationship to relationship in search of the right person, the person who can meet all their deepest needs. But many never find the person they're longing for. They move from house to house, from city to city, looking for that perfect mountain chalet, that ideal beach house, that beautiful house in the country. But they never find the place they're longing for. We were all made for a person and a place. Jesus is that person. Heaven is that place. No one else and no place else will satisfy. The suffering and evil that plague us here and now, in that short period while we live under the unnatural conditions of sin's curse, will have no place then and there, in heaven.

INSPIRATION Ask Me If I Care! - By John Imler - Citrus Heights We have all heard it said in a rather joking manner or seen it on T-shirts but have we ever stopped to consider the message it conveys? Where did this attitude come from? Perhaps it is that we live in what has been called the “me” generation. We allow ourselves to be caught up in our own world, our own jobs, our own families, and our own lives to the point that there is no time to care about others or about their trials and tribulations. Yet this is not the attitude that our Creator wants us as believers to portray. Galatians 6:2 says “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Our world is full of those who carry heavy burdens. No matter where we look we see sickness, loss of friends and loved ones, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, erupting volcanoes, starvation, homelessness, and loneliness. Each of these would cry out to us “Do You Care?” It is obvious that as individuals we cannot carry the burdens of the entire world. Just what is our Creator-given
responsibility to each voice that cries out to us? In Galatians, Paul is speaking to the believers and calls us to share the burden of our fellow believers. In Romans 12:13, he says “Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” But what is our responsibility to those who are not believers? Christ answers in Luke 6:27-31. He sums it up by saying, “Do to others as you would have them do to you” (v. 31). In Matthew 5:16 Christ further admonishes: “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Peter restates this with the words, “Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us” (I Peter 2:12). 1 Corinthians 6:19-20- Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. Have you ever felt hungry on a calorie restrictive diet? Has being hungry led you to binge eating and falling off your diet? Did you regain the weight you lost while you were following the restrictive diet? Restrictive diets result in hunger pains and binge eating. Eating small meals throughout the day, however, boosts your metabolism and keeps you from feeling hungry. We are repeatedly told by diet after diet that you have to cut calories to lose weight. It is said that losing weight is about calories in verses calories out. While this concept is true, some diets take this to the extreme, allowing as little as 800-1,200 calories per day along with exercise to

melt the fat. The problem is that when you follow a calorie restrictive diet, you will actually stop your weight loss progress by slowing your metabolism. To burn fat, it is important to build muscle and increase your metabolic rate. The best way to boost your metabolism is to eat small frequent meals throughout the day. God made our bodies much smarter than we realize. Eating every 2-3 hours tells your body that you are giving it fuel and it does not need to store the calories as fat. When you skip meals, however, your body will store the calories as fat so they can be utilized the next time you skip meals. You become a “fat storing machine,” rather than a “fat burning machine.” This occurs because your body does not know when it will be fueled again so it goes into “survival mode.” Another advantage to frequent meals is you will build and preserve muscle. If you do not feed your muscles protein every few hours so they can repair themselves, they find protein from the closest available source - your own muscles! You basically cannibalize yourself. This is a common occurrence when people do not eat before and after exercise. They basically spend that workout time eating their own muscles! So what is the lesson to be learned here? God is in the business of giving life. It’s a family business. “For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it” (John 5:21). The Father has chosen women to play a special role in the family business. We were chosen to give birth. What an awesome privilege it is to carry life in us. But as we women know, this lifegiving business is so much more than birth. Just as we feed and shelter a baby growing inside us, we keep feeding and protecting those around us. Look around and watch any life-giving woman in action. I saw one of these women at an amusement park this week. She was doing it all. Belly bulging with life, she was pushing a stroller, handing out sippy cups of water and crackers to her young children while herding them along. Hanging from the stroller was an overstuffed bag, no doubt filled with life preserving essentials such as sunscreen, diapers, sanitizing wipes, jackets, and more snacks.
Did you ever think of feeding as a godly quality? Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry.” Isn’t that our mission too, to keep our kids from going hungry? Yes, we feed them in a physical way, but with lifegiving care that nourishes their hearts as well. Knowing this makes me feel better since so much of my life is shopping for, preparing, storing, and cleaning up after meals and snacks. This everyday work is evidence that we are made in the image of God. Besides being nourishers, God has given women the role of life preservers. This is the reason we are tell our children not to run with scissors and touch dead birds at the park. Since we labored to bring them into the world, we want to keep them here as long as possible. It’s more than just keeping children from harm. We women have a unique, comforting touch. We are the nurses, the owie-soothers, the bandagers, the lullaby singers. Where else can that healing presence come from but the nature of our loving God? Even if your children are grown and out of your home, chances are that you’ll engage in life-giving work this week for people you love. Keep it up! You are being the woman God created you to be, and you are partnering in the family business.

POLITICS/CULTURE Justice Nominee Kagan Stirs Some Concerns -
Some conservative groups express concern over the nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court President Obama named Kagan as his nominee to replace retiring Justice John Paul Stevens. One of the repeated complaints among social conservatives is Kagan’s strong pro-choice view. Opponents of her nomination fear she will be an activist judge who will work to advance an agenda rather than interpret the law without bias. “Elena Kagan has strong ties to abortion-advocacy organizations and expressed admiration for activists judges who have worked to advance social policy rather than to impartially interpret the law,” said Charmaine Yoest, president of the Americans United for Life. Yoest said her organization will “oppose President Obama’s attempt to reshape the Court as an activist, proabortion institution” that judges use to

“impose an out-of-the-mainstream social agenda upon the American people.” Kagan, if approved by Congress, would replace 89-year-old Justice Stevens, considered the leader of the court’s liberals. She would be the third women on the high court, joining Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor, another Obama pick. Besides AUL, Catholic Families for America and Priests for Life also oppose Kagan’s nomination because of her stance on abortion. Catholic Families for America is also against the nomination because of her promotion of same-sex marriage. The Catholic organization has initiated a nationwide petition that will be forwarded to the Senate Judiciary Committee. "By nominating Miss Kagan to the Supreme Court, the president continues to demonstrate a brass-knuckles, Chicagomobster mentality toward unifying our nation," said Dr. Kevin Roberts, executive

Another concern for a minority of Americans is the possibility of having no Protestant justice on the Supreme Court for the first time in history. Retiring Justice Stevens is currently the only Protestant on the high court. Kagan grew up in a Jewish household in New York. According to a recent Gallup Poll, however, 66 percent of Americans say it “doesn’t matter” if the next justice is Protestant. What does matter for many is how the next justice leans. Forty-two percent of Americans surveyed by Gallup said they want a new justice who would make the high court more conservative than it currently is. By comparison, only 27 percent said they want a justice who will make the court more liberal.
Nearly a quarter (24 percent) said they want to keep the political leanings of the court as it is now. Kagan, who turned 50 last month, received her law degree at Harvard University and served for five years as dean of the Harvard Law School. She also taught at the University of Chicago, where Obama was also a professor. "You have to admit, Elena Kagan is a brilliant woman," said Sen. Orrin Hatch, a Republican on the Judiciary Committee, during a radio interview last year when Kagan was being considered for a seat on the Supreme Court. "She is a brilliant lawyer. If [Obama] picks her, it is a real dilemma for people." Still, critics point out Kagan has little judicial experience besides a few years of private law practice and as the solicitor general for about a year. She has never been a judge and argued her first case before the Supreme Court as solicitor general. Christianpost.com.

MovieGuide Reviews: Set in ancient times, PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME opens with a young boy, Dastan, impressing the king, who adopts Dastan as his third son. Dastan grows up to be a leader in the Persian army. He leads a division into the city of Alamut, where he captures a sacred dagger that can release the Sands of Time. Dastan’s evil uncle wants to take the dagger and change history so that he becomes king instead of Dastan’s adoptive father. With help from the beautiful queen high priestess and an anti-government sheikh, Dastan must protect the sacred dagger. PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME is a terrific, actionpacked, exciting popcorn movie. It may be the best transformation of a popular video game into a movie. It is also one of the few movies with a time travel plot that works. PRINCE OF PERSIA has a very strong moral worldview stressing loyalty, brotherly love, doing the right thing, and conservative values. There is plenty of action violence and some references to pagan gods, so caution is warranted for older children. Otherwise, however, PRINCE OF PERSIA is a rousing, positive entertainment.
SHREK FOREVER AFTER, the final chapter in the SHREK movies from DreamWorks, is absolutely delightful! In this sequel, Shrek has grown tired of the family routine of raising three babies with Fiona. He’s even tired of his best friend, Donkey. Shrek is duped into signing a pact with the smooth-talking gnome Rumpelstiltskin. Suddenly, he finds himself trapped in a twisted alternate reality where Rumpelstiltskin is king, ogres are hunted, and Fiona doesn’t recognize him. Now, it’s up to Shrek, with help from a suspicious Donkey, to set things right! SHREK FOREVER AFTER is terrific, hilarious, exciting fun for the whole family. It’s the most heart-stirring, emotionally engaging SHREK movie. Also, it’s got the best family values. Not only does Shrek learn the importance of marriage, family and the bonds between parents and children, he also learns the meaning of sacrifice. SHREK FOREVER AFTER is great family fun that reflects the biblical principle of marriage that God established in Genesis 2:24 and that Jesus affirms in Matthew 19. The movie perfectly captures such divine sentiments in a very entertaining, heartfelt way. It provides a wonderful conclusion to this groundbreaking animated series.

On the morning of Tuesday May 18th, I received a phone call from one of our congregants of Hallwood Community Church of the Nazarene informing me the cross that was affixed to the front of our church building was missing. I rushed over as soon as I could and to my dismay found it to be true; our cross was in fact missing. Since the cross was bolted onto the building with lag bolts 8 inches long and a half inch thick it would have required a fair amount of force to pull it from its anchors. As I stared at broken pieces of the cross strewn about the ground, amidst pieces of rock from the wall it was pulled from, I felt a sense of assurance and peace. This was not the first time something challenging in my life had occurred and I knew it would not be the
last. I also knew that when something perceivably bad did happen in my life God always showed up. We called the local authorities and the Sheriff’s department came right away and took a report. They were professional and empathetic and God began to show up. Shortly after we reported the incident our phone began to ring. Hallwood is a small community and word travels fast. We received phone calls from people in and outside the local community voicing their concern and support for our loss. They were bus drivers, store owners, home-makers and farmers; God was showing up. We even received a call from a local farming equipment company who although was not affiliated with our church but believed in the cross and what it represented and wanted to help. Their office had pooled together and they had a check they wanted to donate towards a replacement cross. God did indeed show up. God showed up in the form of all the people that demonstrated their love and support to our church and reminded us that God truly does work all things together for good. I thank you for all of your love, support and encouragement. To the folks that took our cross I would like express that we as believers do not worship the cross but the person that was placed on the cross. However; the cross has a significant message. It is a message of hope and healing for all who believe in the person of Jesus Christ. We forgive you as we have been forgiven; the doors of the church are open to you and we invite you to come. 3rd Annual “Faith Night” Friday, June 11th Bill Buckner-Former Boston Red Sox First Baseman to Speak at Gold Sox Event
The 3rd Annual “Faith Night at the Ballpark” event with the Gold Sox is set for Friday evening June 11that the newly re-named “Appeal-Democrat Park” in Marysville (formerly All Season’s RV Stadium). The gates open early at 5:30pm for this Christian Business Alliance (CBA) sponsored outreach. Pre-game festivities include free Bibles on request and a special Christian concert featuring the local group “God’s Country Band.” Be in your seats early to enjoy a powerful onfield pre-game testimony at 6:55pm by former Boston Red Sox first baseman and 22 year Major League Veteran Bill Buckner. First pitch follows at 7:35pm pairing our own Gold Sox with the Nor Cal Longhorns. From beginning to end you will also have the opportunity to browse the concourse and meet with several community service groups that provide assistance and a variety of resources to anyone in need. In 2008, fans first witnessed former S.F. Giants pitcher and cancer survivor Dave Dravecky share his compelling story of faith and courage. Last year fans heard a passionate testimony from Jim “The Rookie” Morris, the man who inspired Walt Disney’s feature film “The Rookie.” What started in 2008 as a one time event has turned into an annual gathering of hope and inspiration—touching over 7,000 lives in the process! We have another opportunity to share the Good News and reach out to many more searching for truth, peace and real hope as Bill Buckner takes the field to share the source of his strength that carried him through both his trials and triumphs. Bill’s long and successful career spanned four decades and included time with the Dodgers, Cubs, Angels and Royals, but perhaps he is best known for his tenure as first baseman with the Boston Red Sox. In 1985 Bill played every game for the BoSox and set a first base assist record that still stands. Known as a player who played every game as though it were his last, Bill’s grit, toughness and God
given talent were instrumental in getting his team to the 1986 World Series against the New York Mets that went to a seventh and deciding game, which the Red Sox lost. Despite that set-back Bill Buckner is considered one of the more consistent contact hitters in Major League history. In 2,517 games, Bill accumulated 2,715 hits (a mere 285 hits shy of 3,000) with only 453 strikeouts. Although originally promoted to the Majors as an outfielder, Bill played 1,555 regular season games at first base and committed only 128 errors in 13,901 chances. Bill Buckner has posted “Hall of Fame” numbers during his 22 seasons that included a National League Batting Title and All-Star appearance among other notable accomplishments. Once again, this year’s Faith Night celebration will be professionally filmed and commemorative DVDs will again be made available thru the Gold Sox and CBA. Be a part of the excitement with all this special evening has to offer. The Gold Sox and CBA are expecting another large crowd with special thanks to the many local businesses that stepped up to the plate to support the evening. OPINIONS Wearing The Christian Label By Jon Skillman - Oroville
Daily bible reading, along with a daily devotional and frequent fellowship with other Christians helps us learn and keeps us in line with God’s will and purpose for our lives. A good example of this came to me the other morning when I read Colossians 3:17, which reads in part: “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus…” , This verse reminded me, that when I became a Christian I not only acknowledged Christ as my Lord and Savior, I also acquired His Holy name… Like in Christ-ian… one in Christ. In effect, I donned the Christian label and now sport the Christian brand. This means, whatever I do or say reflects directly on Him. This also means, as a Christians, I must be vigilant to keep my words and deeds true to Christ. This is a very daunting task in a culture increasingly bent on secular progressive ideology… and a society turning its collective back to God. This verse (Col. 3:17) struck me right between my ignorance and my ego when I recognized that I sometimes do little things that are not quite Christ like… you know, just to fit in. Or, in order to gain acceptance, I may say something a bit deceiving or even a tad off color. At the

time, these things didn’t seem like a big deal… but when I think about it and compare my actions to Colossians 3:17, I realize I have compromised His Holy Name in order to promote my own. I did things that dishonored Him while at the same time asking forgiveness through His name. Wow! Lord Your grace is more than sufficient, and in my case, it is mercifully abundant. In my daily devotional I also read the following: “Our lives must be distinct, reflecting the character of God to a watching world.” I need not tell you (but I will) that there are many out there just looking to validate their non-belief through my non-obedience. Now I’m not too concerned about those who may call me a hypocrite. I am concerned, however, about my hypocrisy causing someone to stumble or turn away. Causing one to stumble in faith, is more than a concern, it’s a sin… and a pretty darn big one at that. I know not the scope of collateral damage caused by my ignorance, but I know the more I read His Word the less ignorant I become. I’m also aware that reading the Bible is not enough. I must study it, digest it and most of all… live it. I thank you, Lord again for your sufficient and abundant grace, for I believe I will be in constant need of it. Amen.

Is It Ever Ok To “Hate”? By Seth Halpern Tolerance is said to be the opposite of Hate. Our culture tells us that we are not supposed to Hate. Even Jesus (as liberal Christians like to point out) spoke of loving our enemy. The infamous Westboro Baptist Church has put a very ugly face on the concept of Hate. Worse, they have “Baptist Church” in their name and I have NEVER talked to a member of a “Baptist Church” or any other Bible believing church that holds their views. By protesting at military funerals and other venues with their truly hate-filled signs such as “God Hates Fags” and “You’re Going To Hell“, it is tragic that this is how many unbelievers perceive the Body of Christ, thanks to the help of the mainstream media. We are certainly (as Jesus showed) supposed to be loving, caring, and restorative rather than harsh and condemning. So, then, back to the original question, “Is it ever OK to Hate?” With the right context, the answer is a resounding “YES”. While Jesus taught us to Love our enemies, He did tell us to “Hate Evil”. The Apostle Paul told us to “hate what is evil, and cling to what is good” The Old Testament tells us in Prov. 8:13 says “To Fear the Lord is to Hate evil” Evil is all around us. It is pervasive in the world and the Evil One, himself boldly seeks to devour any that will give him an opportunity. His workers of iniquity roam about searching for opportunities to tempt, distract, and discourage. We would indeed do well to heed the mandate to HATE evil. Tolerance is a misnomer. It is a smoke

Certainly scripture commands us, and Jesus displays for us, that we are to accept one another in our differences, and we are to seek to restore our brother and sister who are in sin. We are to reconcile one another to God. We are NEVER directed to tolerate sin in our own lives or lives of others. In fact, Paul went so far as to mandate the breaking of fellowship with those who practice sin because there is no fellowship between Light and Darkness. He also said that we are to take God’s restorative message to those in the world, those in sin, so that they can be reconciled. Sin is the pit of quicksand and we who have been brought onto a solid foundation by the Grace of God need to reach out (outreach?) our hand to bring them to help them out of it. Where does tolerance fit into God’s plan? True, we are not to be judgmental or have a critical spirit towards those practicing sin, for it is , again, the Grace of God, not my own ability or wisdom that puts me on solid ground! So let’s go into the world and share the love and power of our redeemer, deliverer, savior, to reconcile desperately broken people to their Father in Heaven. Tolerance says “Let them be”. Biblical Hate says “Restore them”.
