A
rather incongruous situation exists among America’s politicians, judges, academicians, and even many of the rank and file Americans. On the one hand, they claim to be true Americans— genuine patriots. On the other hand, they disdain Christianity and live contrary to the moral principles contained within the Christian religion. They literally labor to subvert the influence of Christianity on the nation. Politicians reject Christianity by making laws that contradict the Bible. Judges “legislate from the bench” by insisting that Christianity must not be countenanced in their rulings. Educators have banned Christianity from the classroom, avoiding any mention of Christian morality to students. In short, a sizable segment of American society has bought into the ludicrous notion of “separation of church and state,” consequently excluding anything that smacks of the Christian religion
or Christian morality in the execution of their societal responsibilities. In stark contrast stands the “Father of our country”—George Washington. Not only did he lead the Continental Army to victory over the British, thus enabling the launching of the Republic, he also served as our first President (twice). He was unquestionably a quintessential Founder, a critical cog in the overall scheme of things. Before retiring to private life after a distinguished career of public service, Washington delivered his “Farewell Address” to the nation. In that impressive pronouncement, he articulated the foundational keys to the success of the Republic: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to re-
spect and to cherish them.” (1796, emp. added). The Father of our country insisted that the two fundamental pillars on which the Republic is poised are the Christian religion, and the moral principles that are derived there from. These, he said, are the great pillars of human happiness and the firmest props incumbent on citizens. Anyone who does anything to undermine Christianity is no friend of the Republic! He or she is certainly no patriot! If George Washington were alive today to witness the widespread assault on the Christian religion in government, schools, and public life, he would undoubtedly be aghast, and incredulous that so many would pretend to be good citizens and loyal Americans—while actively pursuing a course that will surely hasten the demise of the Republic. Set your hearts on all the words which I testify among you today, which you shall command your children to be careful to observe—all the words of this law. For it
is not a futile thing for you, because it is your life, and by this word you shall prolong your days in the land (Deuteronomy 32:46-47). INSPIRATION “Keeping the Faith” by Ronnie McBrayer Redemption? Daryl the Cable Guy showed up at my friend’s home to fix his malfunctioning modem. Daryl noticed the Christian books in my friend’s office and immediately began unloading his burdens. Daryl admitted that he too was a pastor; at least that was what he used to be. An extramarital affair had ended that career posthaste, and he had been recently expelled from the church and lost his marriage. My friend shared that story with me a few days ago, and when our conversation ended I flipped on my own cable box. Greeting me on the screen was Senator John Edwards, explaining his most recent legalities and apologizing profusely for a laundry list of wellpublicized immoralities. Daryl the Cable Guy and John the Senator have a lot in common, and it was more than a bit ironic that I heard their stories within seconds of each other. Both fouled up in a very public way. Both violated the trust that good people had placed in them. Both weaved their webs of deceit, harming those closest to them. And both stand in need of redemption. That’s a remarkable word, redemption. The Christian books on my own shelves tell me that redemption means “to buy.” The word carries the idea of freeing a person who has been enslaved; cutting the chains that bind; lifting away the weights that one carries. Thus, anything – anyone – worthy of

redemption is exactly that: Worthy and worth the price. The objections at this point are obvious. Philandering preachers? Vile and despicable acts by national politicians? Redemption? You can’t be serious! Well, people exactly like this seem to have been Jesus’ best pals. Let it never be forgotten that the accusation the religious community always hurled against Jesus was that he “was a friend to sinners.” I concede that redemption doesn’t necessarily mean putting Daryl the Cable Guy back in a pulpit. The intoxicating authority found in such a position may be no good for him. John the Senator will likely never hold public office again – and that’s probably a good thing for him – such offices are often more poisonous than profitable anyway. But this does not change the fact that all of us sinners need safe, accessible communities of faith that will challenge our selfishness, point us to a hope-filled contrition, teach us what it means to love others and be loved by God and yes, redeem us. Lessons from the Pigskin By Paula McBride
Let’s buckle up, Friends! Football season is here! Whether that means youth league sidelines, high school stadium, or the upholstered recliner, the frenzy of fans is in the crisp, fall air. My niece and her husband, avid Seahawks fans, are the ultimate in fervor and loyalty. They have all the jackets, pillows, blankets, beanies, and the like that the NFL store sells in the Seahawks logo. And tailgate parties? You’ve never seen one like it. I’d fly to Seattle just to join them. They make football a memorable family activity. Who, do you think, among the saints (of old, not New Orleans) would have been football fans? David, yes; Saul, no. Peter, definite yes; John the Beloved, no. The Sons of Thunder, yes. Paul and Apollos, yes, for opposing teams. Paul used many illustrations in his writing using sports imagery. He may have been thinking of the Corinthian games when he wrote, “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:13-14). While we still breathe, we are straining and pressing. Vince Lombardi said, “Football is like life. It teaches work, sacrifice, perseverance, competitive drive, selflessness, and respect for authority.” God, the owner of our team wants us to learn those traits, and He sent His Son, Jesus, to be our head coach. Jesus is not only our teacher and coach; He is our model. In submission to His Father, Jesus defeated the enemy, worked relentlessly to bring us to Himself, and selflessly sacrificed His life for our victory. Here on earth, our race is persevering obedience of faith in Christ, and our goal is the crown we lay at His feet. Another Vince Lombardi quote is this: “It does not matter how many times you get knocked down, but how many times you get up.” God’s Word reveals many who lived this out: Job, Jeremiah, Joseph, the martyrs, Jesus. “In this world, you will have trouble,” Jesus
said. “But take heart! I have overcome the world”(John 16:33). The strength to get up comes to those who wait upon the Lord. A coach of several colleges including Notre Dame, Ara Parseghian, said, “A good coach will make his player see what they can be rather than what they are.” Aren’t you glad Jesus doesn’t leave us as we are? He delights to transform us into His likeness through the work of the Holy Spirit and the inspiration of His Word. “When the game is over, it is really just beginning,” said Jerry Kramer, a Green Bay Packer Hall of Famer. And so it is with our game of life. Right now, we are in the preseason, in training, straining and pressing. But, oh glorious day! We’ll run through a tunnel or ascend in the clouds to begin the eternity we’ll spend with the witnesses who have been cheering us on. Let’s joyfully celebrate our victory in Christ and take to heart these lessons from the pigskin.

A Woman’s Friend
“Sarah” came into A Woman’s Friend stating that she would have an abortion if her pregnancy test was positive because she didn’t like this world and couldn’t bring a baby into such a horrible place. Yet, before her test was even read she broke down crying after repeating that she had to have an abortion. When her client advocate, Barbara, asked Sarah what her tears were for if she was sure an abortion was the answer, Sarah revealed that she was crying because she loved her baby so much. Sarah said she wanted the best for her baby and knew that she couldn’t give her baby the best. Barbara responded with sharing about the beautiful choice of adoption, but Sarah immediately shook her head saying she couldn’t live with herself if she gave her baby away, that abortion was therefore her only option. Sarah’s conflicting emotions were affecting her rational thinking. On the one hand she was sobbing over this fierce love she already had for the possible baby inside, but on the other hand she felt abortion was better than giving away this child she already loved. Sarah’s greatly anticipated pregnancy test results read negative but the appointment didn’t end there. Barbara shared with Sarah about God’s truths, promises, and love He has for her. Barbara asked Sarah if she wanted to receive all God had to offer her, His peace, goodness,
and love. God completely took over and moved throughout the time Sarah spent at A Woman’s Friend, and she left as a new creation with Christ, having welcomed him into her heart and accepting His love and forgiveness! After receiving the LORD as her risen savior she said, “I feel like there’s a party going on inside my heart right now!” We cheered and said “There is! It’s your spiritual birthday! The angels in heaven are rejoicing too!” Sarah’s appointment ended with Barbara sharing that it was her physical birthday and told Sarah, “You’re the best birthday gift I’ll receive all day!”

National Day of Repentance Christian Newswire
In these very difficult times politics alone can’t resolve our problems. Many of our problems nationally are spiritual, requiring a spiritual solution. One such solution was often employed by our nation’s founders -- a national day not just of prayer, but also of personal, and national, repentance. There is a growing movement, an awakening within the body of Christ, event after event, in these next 90 days, pointing out that we believers in Christ need to pray and repent so that the Lord can step in with His miracles, which our nation now desperately needs. Many prayer events are planned, but a focus on repentance is vital for their success. In local Christian churches and ministries across denominations and across the nation just such a National Day of Repentance is set to take place from sundown Tuesday, September 25 through sundown Wednesday, September 26. To emphasize the value God places on repentance, this date will coincide with the 3,450-year-old Jewish holy day of atonement, Yom Kippur. The purpose of the National Day of Repentance is to bless the body of Christ, by focusing on repentance in our own lives, on this one key day; pull away from the world, and join many others across the nation, in local churches, homes, or ministries. We encourage the body of Christ to pray, to fast, and to do

A website, www.dayofrepentance.org, has been created to foster participation at the grassroots level among the denominations within the body of Christ on this key day. The event is calling pastors, priests, intercessors, church leaders, prayer “warriors,” those with the ability to discern the times like the sons of Issachar [1 Chronicles 12:32], those with spiritual discernment [1 Corinthians 12:9], those who understand the spiritual power of repentance individually, and for a nation. [Revelation 3:19, Ephesians 6:12; and 2 Chronicles 7:14]. Our Founding Fathers understood the power of repentance and declared Days of “Fasting, Prayer and Humiliation” as a key spiritual tool to establish and preserve this nation. When the Revolutionary War looked most bleak, John Adams, asked if he believed we could nonetheless defeat Great Britain, said: “Yes, if we fear God and repent of our sins.”

RESOURCES Natural Does Not Equal Moral omosexuals often argue that they were born homosexuals, and that, because it is natural, their sexual disposition ought, therefore, to be acceptable to society and that society ought to permit homosexuals to marry. Like homosexuals, many pedophiles insist that they too were born that way. So do many of those who practice bestiality and polyamory (having more than one sexual relationship openly), all of which raises several questions: “Is pedophilia a choice?” “Is bestiality? “Is polyamory? “If pedophiles, bestialists, and polyamorists are right about their own natural inclinations, then ought we to permit those inclinations simply because they are natural? Should we permit those groups to marry?” If you say “no,” then you have undermined your case for homosexual marriage because you are arguing that “natural” doesn’t mean “moral.” If you say “yes,” then you have undermined marriage itself. And don’t think that you can avoid the implications of your answer by saying that homosexuals consent to marriage but the children and the beasts do not because mere consent does not make an action moral. Its morality depends upon its conformity to the great moral code, not its being consensual. Simply consenting to it does not make it moral. Simply because a group of bank robbers all consent to to their plan, it doesn’t mean their plan
is moral. Simply because folks do or do not consent to a sexual practice or to a marriage does not make that practice or that marriage moral. Further, if we human creatures are now fallen by nature, then the fact that something is natural can be grounds for moral suspicion, not moral justification. Nat Day of Repentance (cont. from p. 7) This National Day of Repentance is set to coincide with Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement. Holding this event on Yom Kippur, is in no way meant to preempt or replace what Yom Kippur means for the Jewish people, but is meant to honor the Jewish people’s divinely mandated calendar (Lev 23:1-2), and to honor the holiness and seriousness of that day. It also honors the Jewish roots of the Christian faith in Romans 1:16. The Lord Himself said [Leviticus 23:2731] that the Day of Atonement would be a “holy convocation”, a day to “afflict” one’s soul, to do no work; a “statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.” Although 2 Chronicles 7:14 applies to Israel primarily, it also applies
to all believers as a way to heal the nations, including our nation, in 2012. “If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” This is a nonprofit project, for the body of Christ, across all denominations, initiated by a small group of pastors nationwide. I have yet to find any research that shows that distribution of condoms or encouraging use of condoms cuts down promiscuity or even unwanted pregnancies or STD’s.” Clovis officials say they’ve abided by state law because California education law encourages abstinence, and abstinence is the only way to prevent pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. The Los Angeles Times reports that the region has one of the highest teen pregnancy and STD rates in the state.
Christian education group says it’s an outrage that one California school district is being sued for teaching students abstinence. Clovis Unified School District is being sued for putting the health of students at risk by teaching abstinence-only curriculum. The lawsuit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Northern California, the GayStraight Alliance Network and the American Academy of Pediatrics. The lawsuit asserts that the district is violating state law by only teaching abstinence. Finn Larsen is the executive director of Christian Educators Association International. He finds that abstinence education is the most effective way to prevent pregnancies, STDs and promiscuity. “What I have found across the nation is that there seems to be a focus on

The Live Oak Festival is a celebration of the role agriculture plays in our community. No one imagined 164 years ago that Live Oak’s riches would come from the earth in the form of crops harvested instead of gold. Our community serves as an anchor for the diverse agricultural products grown in California. The Festival begins with a parade in our Historic Commercial District. The parade, which is free to enter, begins at 10:00 a.m. and runs down Broadway. Opening ceremonies follow in Live Oak Memorial Park between O and P streets adjacent to the Live Oak Community Center and the Live Oak Little League baseball fields. The festival grounds open at 11:00 a.m. and close at 9:00 p.m. Admission and parking are free! In addition to the parade, free admission, free parking, live entertainment, craft vendors, delicious food, children’s activities, a tamale cookoff, and a wonderful and varied car show, prizes will be given away throughout the day. ...then you haven’t been reading this monthly column. It is my heartfelt desire to see Christians live totally committed lives to Jesus Christ. I personally have experienced the radical transformation that occurs when you move from compromise to commitment. And now I want nothing more than to encourage others to take that step as well. I will package my testimony as follows: “I got saved in 1992 and serious in 1997.” Many of you know exactly what that means. Then there are those who are still trapped in the world of compromise. There is a way out and God is committed to making that happen provided there is a desire on the part of the believer to repent and step away from the “practice” of sin. To put it bluntly, American Christianity is sick. Here are some disturbing statistics from George Barna on the state of Christianity in America. As you read these stats, keep in mind that nearly 80% of Americans say that they are Christians. • 43% of Americans said it
doesn’t matter what religious faith you follow because they all teach the same lessons; 54% of Americans disagree. • Half of Americans (50%) believe that all people are eventually saved or accepted by God no matter what they do, while 40% disagreed. And this last statistic is the most telling as to why Christianity in America is on life support. • Only about 3% of all self-identified Christians in America have surrendered control of their life to God, submitted to His will for their life, and devoted themselves to loving and serving God and other people. How can you be a follower of Jesus Christ and not be completely committed to Him at the same time? It does not make sense! Let’s commit our lives completely to Christ and encourage other believers to do the same. National Life Chain Sunday 2012 Is October 7th! In Life Chain’s 25th year of prayer and public witness on U.S. and Canadian sidewalks, we must discern “the times” and heed God’s warning to nations that institute and validate evil. To legalize the killing of God’s future worshippers is to defile God’s holiness and flaunt His eminent regard for mercy and justice. Of added defilement is church apathy that permits such evil to gain root and prevail for decades. The risk is severe, as seen in the devastation that ended slavery’s legitimacy in America and ended the annihilation of Jews and other unwanted humanity in Germany. Of the Civil War, Lincoln wrote: “…the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.” Mercy, when withheld, seeks justice. Let us learn from the “peculiar people” Christ chose to anchor His gospel. Their sacrificial action against infanticide impacted a pagan culture, unlike today’s passive church in Christianized Western nations. Rather than deter abortion’s legalization, our lukewarmness helped ready its passage and helped ready us to accommodate its cruelty by yielding in substantial measure to co-existence with it. Wrote columnist and constitutional attorney Matt Barber: “We’ve simply moved from the gas chambers to the abortion clinics—from Auschwitz to Planned Parenthood…to live under Roe v. Wade is to live in shame.” Evil cannot defeat a repentant and resolute church. Observed pastor Clenard Childress: “There was a time when the church was very powerful…. Early Christians rejoiced at being deemed worthy to suffer for what they believed. In those days the church was not merely a thermometer that recorded the ideas and principles of popular opinion; it was a thermostat that transformed the mores of society…. Small in number, they were big in commitment…. By their effort and example, they brought an end to such ancient evils as infanticide and
gladiatorial contests.” Let us value the early church enough to imitate it. Let us view preborn humanity as God’s invaluable “gifts” with divine purpose—gifts “in the image of God” that we must defend, whatever the cost. Of urgent need are pastors who will return pro-life to its biblical roots, who will equip and mobilize their laity, and who will persuade fellow clergy to prepare themselves for battle against massive child mutilation. Under today’s pro-life standard, 300,000 “pro-life pastors” occupy pulpits in America, yet a horrid abortion scourge disgraces and impairs both church and nation. Lead pastors are in vital need. Let us restore the biblical meaning of pro-life and in so doing restore to the church much needed integrity and relevance. The pulpit can accomplish that. It is more powerful than a congress or parliament. Again in 2012, National Life Chain Sunday, Lord willing, will line U.S. and Canadian sidewalks with peaceful Life defenders who will intercede for America and Canada. Pastors, please prepare your people for prayer and solemn meditation. Extol the Preborns’ humanity. Cry out in their defense. And please lead your congregation or parish to your local sidewalks to “plead the case of the fatherless to win it.” Today, we the church are the only hope for at-risk Preborns’ because abortion law has granted mothers full pregnancy control. Let us this year, as never before, pray for broken hearts and commitment, that we might see the end of legal child killing and experience mercy for our nation, rather than justice. Yuba-Sutter area Life Chain will be held from 2:00 – 3:30pm on Sunday, October 7th. For 90 minutes area Christians will be standing in quiet prayer, while silently proclaiming the need to end abortion and save innocent lives. They stand in agreement along Hwy 20 on both sides of the bridge. Please strongly consider joining them.
COMMUNITY To Whom Much Is Forgiven… Loves Much...
T
he call came from Joe, a member of my congregation, “Pastor Joan, the homeless camps are on fire…” A staff and I ran to see what was happening. When we got there, firemen were spraying down flames; first responders in a Hummer were rushing through the brush, making sure no one was in harms way; and the police were keeping the parameter secured, not allowing anyone in or out. But that is not what really caught my attention… A homeless woman, whose camp was now a pile of ashes, hopelessly squatted under a tree. She, who really had nothing, now had lost everything. There she sobbed into the fur of one of her dogs, waiting to see who else was going to be burned out. I asked an officer if we could help in any way. He estimated that probably seven or eight camps were gone, and said we’d have to wait a few hours before we could get in the area to help. I went back to my office and made a few calls. Amazing! The response was incredible. In a matter of a couple of hours, thanks to the body of Christ in action, we had food, blankets, tents, drinks, ice chests full of ice, and more. (We actually had gathered more than they could use!) The amazing thing is that the ones who so quickly answered the call were those who “had been there”, who knew what it meant to have hit some really hard times. Church members, Sacramento Valley Teen Challenge staff and students immediately dropped everything to come
and assist. Some of those who came knew what it was like to be homeless; some were those who had run havoc in the area in the past and just wanted to give back; and one was a man in the community that went to his cupboards and just pulled out everything he thought those in need could use; he too, understood what it meant to be in need. The one thing these special people have in common; they were those who had been “forgiven much”; and thus, they “love much”. As the Senior Pastor of Riverside Restoration Center and an Area Director for Teen Challenge, I get to see people at their best and at their worst. As for those who are at their worst, they need the love of Christ the most! One of my greatest joys is that from my vantage point, I get to see the RRC congregation, other members of the community, and TC staff and students working side by side making a difference in our community. Through the many outreaches and other ministries to the poor, those who have been “forgiven much”, are given the opportunity to share the “love” that brought them out of their own personal pits. It is truly phenomenal what advances can be made for His Kingdom when each member of the body of Christ will do his or her part – not caring about who gets the credit; not trying to build a personal kingdom; rather, being willing to do whatever it takes to see souls CONT. THE CHICK-FIL-A FLAP By Jon Skillman Tolerance is the virtue of a man without conviction. (G. K. Chesterton) Buckle up dear readers we’re in for a bumpy ride. Once again the titans of tolerance have proven themselves to be the champions of hypocrisy. They just seem to have their heads so full of “progressive” ideology there is no room for rational thought or consideration of divergent views. The latest episode of the reality show “I’m a bigger hypocrite than you” aired when Dan Cathy, president of the fastfood chain, Chick-fil-A, expressed his views against same sex marriage and his support of the biblical definition of family. Well this caused such a flap in secularville that they ran amuck trying to claim the title of, “Most Intolerant”. In my view Boston mayor, Thomas Menino won the honor hands down. In a letter to Chick-fil-A, Menino wrote: “There is no place for discrimination on Boston’s Freedom Trail and no place for your company along side it.” Freedom Trail? Really Thomas? Where’s your freedom of speech? Where’s your freedom of expression or freedom of religion? You might want to consider renaming your Freedom Trail to, oh I don’t know, Prejudice Path or maybe Hypocrite Way, they sound a little more apropos. Oh! By the way, your letter on discrimination reads just a tad discriminatory itself. You just
don’t seem quite clear on the whole concept of freedom. And not to be outdone, Rohm Emanuel the mayor of Chicago weighed in with this pearl of tolerance: “Chick-fil-A’s values are not Chicago’s values.” Now let’s see if I’ve got this right. Chick-fil-A, a Christian company, following the moral standards of God doesn’t share the same values as the city of Chicago. Well tell me this, Rohm; what exactly are Chicago’s values…and by whose standard are they set? Warning! The following is not really a news flash: “San Francisco mayor Edwin Lee criticized Chickfil-A, for its anti-gay stance.” I mean, who saw that one coming? On his weekly radio show, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg offered a ray of reason by stating: “It is inappropriate for a government entity to look at somebody’s political views and decide whether or not they can live in the city, or open a business in the city, or work for somebody in the city.” Is it just me or isn’t that what America is all about? But wait! There’s more! Later, Bloomberg extinguished that rare ray of reason with the following comparison: “Trampling on the freedom to marry whoever you want is exactly the same as trampling on your freedom to open a store.” Huh? Gee
AS WE SEE IT Lessons from Milo My wife LOVES our dog. Me? Well, that’s another story. (Yes, she loves me too!) I don’t love Milo like she does. In fact, I usually can’t stand him. “Why”, you ask? For starters, he is disobedient and selfish. He only cares about getting his treats if he’s not already chewing on a Bounce sheet or water bottle. He usually holds them for ransom and we have to negotiate with some chicken jerky! Besides that, when we take him for a walk he is either pulling on the leash to go ahead of us or we have to drag him to keep up. He is simply disobedient. You might think that we haven’t trained him well. I’m not going to argue that with you because we’ve tried. But here’s what I’ve noticed about Milo. He KNOWS he’s on a leash, but he’ll try to go off on his own anyway, at least as far as he can before choking himself. On the other hand, there are times when he won’t walk or
Michael, I must have missed that one on my Constitution test? Oh silly me, nobody seems to go by the constitution anymore. You know sometimes I have to check the flag flying over the Post Office to convince myself I’m still living in America. On a brighter note; since this all went “viral,” people of faith, reason and a sense of fairness have flocked (pun intended) to patronize their local Chick-fil-A restaurant and to show their intolerance to the intolerable. This is something we, as a nation, should do more often.

Seth Halpern - Editor is even afraid to walk, like when we cross the street and we have to tug (or pull) the leash in order to get him to move for his own safety. Hmm…does any of this sound familiar? I really hated the fact that after getting myself frustrated with Milo, the Holy Spirit showed me a thing or two about myself (and probably you too). Sometimes I go ahead of God; I think that I don’t need Him and can take care of things myself; that’s my pride. Other times, I am reluctant or even stubborn and will not do what He may be “tugging” on my heart to do. Usually, that is out of fear (what will happen if …?). Pride and Fear: two major hindrances to me (and again, to most of us) The “cure” for both of these, as with Milo, is obedience. If he will do what his master wants, things will go well for him. Likewise, when we obey our Master, life will be a blessing to ourselves and to others. Pride and Fear, I believe, are the two most useful tools in the Enemy’s tool belt and disobedience to the Lord will keep us “barking up the wrong tree”!
