Returning Faith to the Forefront of Christmas

C

hristmas has to be, without a doubt, my favorite time of year and I’m instilling that love in my children. For all of the stress, the shopping, the traveling, the crowds, the cooking, and preparation, I love Christmas. I love the smells, the music, the snow, the children’s anticipation, the gifts, the lights… I love it all.

But, if I’m not careful, in all of the tinsel and lights, programs and purchases, I will lose my First Love of Christmas and so will my children.

So, I’ve declared this Christmas the “Christmas of my First Love” where I will help my family shift our focus from the mall to the manger. The manger is qui-

eter and less crowded. It’s a place where children are always welcome. Spending time here will help our family to keep our eyes and hearts fully focused on Jesus. I invite you to join with us! The truth is, unlike “Know-it-all”, I don’t really want it all because I have my first love, Jesus and my family… and that’s everything I’ve ever really wanted.

Making the move from mall to manger this Christmas isn’t that difficult!

Here are some ideas...

Enjoy the simple things at home. Things like homemade gifts, refrigerator art, Christmas caroling, and evenings with family by the fire watching It’s a Wonderful Life and other Christmas classics. Load your family in the car and drive around enjoying the Christmas lights.

Read the Christmas story from Luke 2. Whether you open your gifts on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning, try having someone from your family read the Christmas story out loud before opening gifts. For several years, our children acted out the Christmas story.

Celebrate Jesus’ birth with a party. Last year our family started Christmas Eve dinner with a birthday party for Jesus complete with cupcakes, candles, and music. And yes, we ate the cupcakes first! Make sure you sing Happy Birthday to Jesus to cap off the celebration.

Letters to Jesus. Before opening your Christmas presents, write thankyou letters to Jesus. Collect them and

INSPIRATION The Awe Factor

“W

hat does the word gospel mean?” I asked my Sunday school students.

“Good news,” they replied.

“And what’s the good news?”

“Jesus was born. He lived. He taught.

He died to save us from our sins and rose again. Then He went to heaven and sent the Holy Spirit to live with us.”

That’s one way of condensing the messages of Peter and Paul for second and third graders studying the book of Acts, but as we repeated that statement each Sunday, a truth pursued me into the weekdays. Over and over, the phrase echoed: Jesus was born. Jesus was born!

Does that phrase cause you to stop and ponder in wonder and amazement?

Let me tell you; it gets me pretty excited because all history was changed the moment the transcendent God took on flesh. Let’s look at a few things together.

I’d like to share my awe factor with you.

First of all, it is more than amazing that Jesus didn’t cling to His rights as God. Together with His Father, He launched the stars into space and set the boundaries of the seas. He told the sun when to rise and set. He influenced kings and guided the affairs ancient civilizations. Yet, Jesus “made Himself nothing” Paul wrote, “taking on the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness”(Philippians 2:7). Jesus was born!

If that’s not enough to drench you in wonder, get this: not only did Jesus give up His rights as God, He did it knowing He would be despised, rejected, tortured, and killed. The apostle John wrote, “He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him…His own did not receive Him” (John 1:10-11). Jesus was born in spite of that!

Let’s look at the other side of this picture. What if Christ had not been born? We would have to live always, as C.S. Lewis wrote, in a world “where it’s always winter, and never Christmas.” In this world of always winter, none of the teachings of Jesus would warm our days.

Secular philosophy would diminish the value of human life. Widow, orphans, the unborn, and the aged would be burdens to society. The servant-model of Jesus would not be present in leadership. There would be no Christian principles scaffolding the institutions of education and government.

Sadly, we would have no choice but to live always in winter. But Jesus was born! Just as His coming changed history long ago, change can happen in us. When our hearts are slammed with the awe factor that Jesus was born, it follows that Christ’s life, teachings, death, resurrection, and ascension are historical facts wrapped with great power. The power that changed lives in the past is still at work. We frozen pilgrims can choose to walk in the sunlight of divine love. To me, that’s amazing, incredible! WOW! That’s the awe factor of Jesus birth. I hope you share it with me. Merry Christmas!

Teen Challenge & Twin Cities Rescue Mission

I was raised in a small town to a non-Christian family. My parents are good people with a lot of integrity, but I was a rebellious kid and didn’t have a close bond with them. By the time I was in grade school, I was already drinking, smoke cigarettes and marijuana and hiding it from them. By the time I went to high school, I was using hard drugs, mostly cocaine and meth and had a serious drinking problem as well. This continued into my adulthood. I bounced in and out of jobs, relationships, and jail.

About ten years ago, I found myself faced with the dilemma of being a new father while still addicted to drugs and alcohol.

I put myself into a rehab program and after six month of sobriety and meetings, I relapsed and became frustrated and disappointed in myself. I developed a pattern of sobriety for short periods of time then falling back into relapse and misery. I was frustrated at why I could not maintain sobriety, knowing well that I would have to walk away from my daughter. For the first time in my life I began to pray for an answer and through some family members, I found a program called, “Teen Challenge”. Thinking I had nothing else to lose, I entered the program under the impression that it was a drug and alcohol rehab, finding out that it was actually

a Christian discipleship and an answer to my prayers. Through their discipleship, I was able to build a relationship with Christ. I found out that what I was lacking was relationship with God and because of that I had no solid foundation to remain in sobriety. Since leaving the program, I have had my ups and downs, but no longer struggle with sobriety now that God has delivered me. I am now involved in ministry as the house manager at the Twin Cities Rescue Mission where I see God’s work being done every day.

I’ve seen men with similar issues to mine come here and find sanctuary and healing through the ministering of Jesus Christ, and being part of that has been an awesome experience for me. The best part is sharing my life and my love of God with my daughter. Over these last six years of being saved, my daughter and I have grown in God together and I know in my heart she won’t face the same issues as I had growing up with knowing Our Lord and Savior. I have been given the honor and privilege of working together with our Pastor, Joe Grinnell, and have been a part of the incredible change that has been made here. His emphasis on spiritual growth, not spiritual perfection has inspired many (including me) to make serious changes in our lives. We still offer a bed to those in transit looking for a warm safe place to sleep, but also offer

INSPIRATION a 30 day blackout which is a transitional period for men to get into one of the many on year discipleship programs we have in this area. We also have a 30 day work search program as well as two Bible studies and a Bible based step being offered each day. It is so exciting to be a part of God’s work here and see our brothers benefit from His love. I have been truly blessed and I am so grateful to God. Secret Santa: Secret Santa is another wonderful way to teach your family about serving others. As a family, select one person you know who is lonely, needy or just needs some extra encouragement. Then on Christmas Eve/ Christmas morning, get the family up out of bed, bundle up, grab some cookies and hot cocoa, pile into the family car and drive the gift over to the person’s home.

Frankly, I don’t think Jesus is impressed with our willingness to pay for Christmas gifts until next Christmas season – when of course, the next round of loading up on our consumer debt comes along! Buying Christmas gifts on credit – when we can’t afford to pay those credit card bills off right away – does more harm to our families than good.

Attend the Christmas church services, especially Christmas Eve. Advent is a wonderful time of year – as the church community comes together for special observations to recognize Jesus’ birth. Even if you’ve been away from the church for a while, Christmas is a great time to start attending again.

“Keeping the Faith” In the Arms of Love

Much of current religion is anchored to a shaky mooring. It goes like this: God is angry, and someone has to pay. Is it no wonder then, that the world is filled with hate, bloodshed, panic, and terror when religious people, the vast majority of the world’s population, inflict this belief on others? It doesn’t have to be this way. God is not an unpredictable executioner with an itchy, twitchy trigger finger that must be pacified. This is a gross misrepresentation of our faith, because it is a gross misrepresentation of Jesus.

We who are Christian believe that Jesus “is the visible image of the invisible God,” as the Apostle Paul wrote.

Paul continued, “And through Christ, God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything.” Put simply, the Advent of Jesus, his coming into the world that we celebrate during this season, was not to save us from God, but to show us what and who God is really like.

And what is he like? He is at peace with us. He has reconciled all things. There is no anger to placate and no blood to shed, only his love to receive, explore, and share.

I enjoy how Father Richard Rohr explains this. He once had a wonderful meal with a family in his parish while their toddler, who had just learned to

walk, was running about everywhere. He ran to the top of a set of stairs but could not find his “brakes” in time to stop. He toppled, over the edge, banging and careening his way downward. No one at the table moved; they all held their breath in dread. The father finally jumped up and ran to the stairwell. There the youngster was at the bottom of the steps, only bruised a bit, but lying in shock, his eyes bugged out over what had just happened.

Only when his dad got to him and picked him up did he start crying.

Father Rohr made this appropriate observation: “We can never acknowledge our pain and let the healing begin, until we are taken up in the arms of love.

Love allows the crying and the mending to begin.” God wants to take up the hurt and injured into his arms to love and mend, not destroy. So let the mending begin in each us, and we might discover that the mending will begin in our world.

RESOURCES What Your Atheist Friend Knows About God (But Doesn’t Want to Admit)

Years ago I stood before Michelangelo’s David in Florence, Italy. No one questioned that an artist had sculpted this magnificent piece of Renaissance art.

It was the work of a genius. Yet, in the same room, no doubt, there were persons called “atheists” who would deny that a greater Artist was also necessary to create the original David that Michelangelo attempted to imitate. The true David, like other creations of God, was far more difficult to make than what Michelangelo crafted out of stone. That David had functioning eyes that could actually see, instead of an orb of stone.

Underneath the atheist’s claim lies a nagging knowledge that a Creator actually made man and all the world of nature around him, with its symmetry, intricacy and beauty. The atheist may suppress that knowledge as a way to make room for his sin, but it is so obvious that only a man seeking to eradicate his moral problem could deny it. And this is exactly what God tells us:

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools . . .

(Romans 1:18-22)

I have talked with atheists through the years. So far, each one that I can remember has finally admitted to me that he would not believe in God even

if there were proof that He existed. This may not be what all atheists could bring themselves to admit, but it is exactly what God states is the case. What can we say then to that honest admission? Most [all?] atheists are moral ones, not intellectual ones.

But there is another fact that atheists believe about God. They believe that they are doing wrong when they sin and they deserve to be punished (Romans 1:32). Again, they may not readily admit this.Where does this sense of sin come from?

First, it comes from the knowledge of the existence of God, as I already mentioned. But, second, God teaches that they “know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things [i.e. sins he had just listed] are worthy of death” (Romans 1:32).The phrase, “ordinance of God” is specially used by Paul in Romans to describe what is under the law, those fundamental standards of God rather than the written Law of Moses. This means that without any written Law, their consciences indict them. In other words, they live in an inner world of allegations and defenses, proving that underneath it all, they believe God is there and has a standard by which to live. His actions and thoughts bear this out over and over again. He cannot deny this if he looks closely at his behavior and thoughts.

These two facts leave men and women, atheistic or not, in a frightening position before the God who is actually there. It is wonderful when an atheist will admit these truths honestly and openly.

He is on his way to the best of lives and forgiveness of his rebellion against God. It will take more knowledge—the knowledge of the gospel itself—along with true repentance and belief in Christ, before he will have life from God, a life that gives evidence to the authenticity of that faith.

Let’s pray that God will open our friend’s eyes to see what he or she, in fact, already knows.

What the Christmas Buying Season Says About Us

They came, they saw, they bought. Retailers reported billions of dollars in sales on what is now known as “Black Friday,” the Friday after Thanksgiving. For years now, that day has marked the official start of the Christmas buying season. Nevertheless, new developments threaten to displace Black Friday from its primacy.

The first development is “Cyber Monday,” the Monday after Thanksgiving, which has emerged as the major day for special bargains available through retailers on the Internet. According to Huffington Post: Money, Americans were expected to spend more than $1.5 billion yesterday, setting a new record.

At the same time, USA Today reports that Cyber Monday is itself being displaced by online bargains offered even earlier. As Maria Puente reported, Cyber Monday is being replaced by a cyber season that will last right up to Christmas Eve.

The other development is the fact that several major retailers opened their stores at some point on Thanksgiving Day, attempting to lure customers with advance bargains. This led to no shortage of outrage and discussion, with several commentators lamenting the heartlessness of forcing employees to work on Thanksgiving Day.

Christians must understand the moral complexity of a market economy,

and that complexity is fully on display this Christmas shopping season.

We know the dangers of materialism, but we have benefited from an economy that is built on consumer demand. We know that possessions cannot bring true joy, but we are all possessors.

A slowdown in sales means that millions will lose their jobs and be unable to feed their families. A shortfall in revenue will hurt corporate bottom lines, but pension funds for retirees and tax support for schools will also be reduced.

It makes no sense to condemn retailers for opening stores on Thanksgiving Day and then turn to make major purchases on the Internet. If retailers do not find a way to compete successfully with online merchants, stores will disappear, leading not only to a loss of community but a net loss of jobs.

There are no easy answers to any of these complex issues. One thing is clear — the retailer most likely to be responsive to these concerns is likely to be local. We are all likely to make purchases online this season, and some in big chain stores as well. But the “Buy Local” movement should be embraced by conservatives as a recognition of the importance of local merchants to the making of a liveable community. That is a conservative virtue we should remember all year long.

Here is an interesting fact. Approximately 75% of Americans claim Christianity and less than 20% attend church on any given weekend. Therefore is there any question as to why America is experiencing a moral freefall? I realize that the solution is greater than simply convincing Christians to get back into the habit of weekly church attendance. It really has more to do with a completely sold out uncompromising commitment to the person of Jesus Christ. Revelations 2:4-5 points us in the right direction to get back on course. “Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first….” And for many of us, this also may include a recommitment to weekly fellowship.

EDITORIALS MERRY WHATEVERMAS

t’s that wonderful time of year when, once again, our secular progressive friends don their Grinch apparel and set forth to try to ruin Christmas for the rest of us. City by city, town by town, and village by village their little beady Grinch eyes scan the country for any encroachment of Christmas onto the public square. Did you know that in some school districts, Christmas decorations, including the wearing of Santa hats are strictly verboten?

Jawohl mien Fuhrer! Sorry kids…Not Christmas for you!

We also have the goose-stepping storm troopers of the ACLU searching the shadows of town halls and courthouses for any signs of those sinister Nativity Scenes that might corrupt this nation into a spirit of Peace on Earth Goodwill to Man. A group in Wisconsin threatened a small town in Pennsylvania with a lawsuit if the town didn’t remove the Nativity Scene that has been displayed for over fifty years.

Unable to stand up to the big bullies from Wisconsin and their ACLU goons, the small Pennsylvania town moved the scene to private property. I know, I know, some of you are probably thinking; well you know, there is that separation of church and state thing. BAH HUMBUG! That’s a complete misinterpretation of the intent of the first amendment and you know it.

If all that is not enough, we now have the PC Gestapo rounding up everything Christmas and re-labeling it so as not to exclude or offend anyone. Christmas trees are becoming holiday trees, Christmas lights…winter solstice lights and Christmas is becoming…a winter festival or lumped into the generic…Holidays.

Hey! Listen up! It’s Christmas! It’s the day we celebrate the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. I’m sorry, but if Christmas offends you…then I really feel sorry for you because you are way lost.

It seems the secular progressives want to retain all the trappings of Christmas but eliminate the Christ part. They like the lights, they accept the trees, Santa, the gifts, but would rather not deal with all that spiritual stuff…it kindda puts a damper on the party don’t you know. They

don’t want to hear The Greatest Story ever told (Luke 2:1-20) or accept the greatest gift ever offered to mankind. They’d rather exchange salvation and eternal life for a Crock Pot, IPad or a Chia Pet…How unbelievably sad.

I don’t really know how to deal with all of this. I just can’t wish them all a Merry Whatevermas and move on. But it’s hard to love those who mock you.

But Jesus did. It’s hard to love those who hate you. But Jesus did. And it’s hard to forgive those who have wronged you. But Jesus does. After all…he forgave me and He commands me to do likewise. Isn’t that the real message of Christmas? Let’s not let that message get lost or become a casualty of the “War on Christmas”.

When I wish you a Merry Christmas I pray you will hear the Holy Spirit in my voice, see the love of Christ in my eyes and feel the grace God in my heart.

Merry Christmas everybody, and I do mean everybody.

AS WE SEE IT The “Perfect” Christian Denomination I won’t keep you guessing. It’s NOT yours! Now, if you’re still reading, let me explain. I have been involved with Christian churches of numerous denominations from conservative to charismatic, from “Bible-centered” to “Spirit-filled”. I have known clergy and laypeople from each who were solid, loving followers of Christ. I have also known clergy and laypeople from each who were distant, insensitive and hypocritical. There are many “beliefs” among the churches and too many differences to mention. Here’s a sampling: Some believe in woman leaders, others do not. Some baptize by immersion, others sprinkle. Some believe the gift of tongues is for today, others believe it’s from the devil.

There are literally hundreds of other differences. Some are more significant, some are less. The problem is that Jesus prayed that we would be ONE (Jn 17:21). These secondary divisions don’t allow us to be “one”. They create a fractured, broken Body. Before some of you send me an email, let me say that I am very concerned about Truth.

We cannot just allow any doctrine to creep into the church. My concern, though, is that we need to look at what is essential truth. As the saying goes“In essentials, unity, in non-essentials, liberty, in all things, charity (love)” It seems that we don’t agree on what is essential. I believe that is answered

by Paul’s statement “we are saved by grace, through faith, and not of ourselves lest anyone should boast”.

If you believe that anything other than the grace and forgiveness of Jesus Christ and His sacrifice on the cross saves you, then we have a problem.

But if you wear a head covering or worship on a different day of the

The Ambassador is available in more than 100 local churches in the Yuba, Sutter, Butte County area. They are found in many denominations. A handful of local churches have chosen NOT to carry The Ambassador. Few have said why, but it seems that it is because they cannot “monitor” all the content for their congregation.

Folks, we are the Body of Christ and we need to “be as one”. Since the inception of The Ambassador, I made a personal commitment to two things: 1. The Ambassador would be independent and not “affiliated” with any specific church or denomination.

2. There would be an emphasis on unity of purpose (pro-life, pro-family) and offering encouragement and hope (through inspiring stories and personal testimonies, etc) rather than denominational differences. To ensure a balance, we have writers from many different churches and denominations (within Biblical Christianity). My point is that we are all going to find out that we were right on some things and wrong on others. I’m not talking about Mormons or Jehovah’s Witnesses.

They believe in a different Jesus – another gospel. I’m talking about those followers of Jesus, God in the flesh, who died to forgive us and reconcile us to the Father. Once we have that right, I believe our walk is more important than our talk!
