Making Exercise By: Paula McBride
My walk into the town of Vicente Guerrero was pleasant. The sun, always a radiant blue, warmed my shoulders, and my appetite was satisfied by a special treat of ice cream. Now, I headed back to the mission, my feet carefully picking through cornstarch silt, rocks, and the ever-present litter that marks rural Mexico. A white van slowed beside me. It was Juan Carlos, a fellow missionary. “Do you want a ride?” he called out the window. “No, I’m good,” I replied appreciatively. “You are making exercise?” he responded. “Si,” I acknowledged. He drove away, and I continued my walk. I was intrigued by the translation of Juan Carlos’ phrase. In Spanish, the verb, for make and do are the same, so it was natural for him to think I was making exercise when, to me, I was “doing” my exercise. Or we don’t do exercise. How are our fitness resolutions from the first of the year working out? It’s summer now, and we still don’t have our swim suit bodies, our lowered blood pressure, or better cholesterol numbers. Perhaps in order to make exercise, we need to make a goal, make time, and make a plan for accountability. Then we use the English verb, DO it! Many of us made goals in the New Year for improved spiritual fitness. How’s that working out for us? I know a young lady, Christine, who set herself a goal to read the Bible through this year. She has made that same resolution countless other years, but this year, she is right on target with her reading plan. Her spiritual appetite and thought life have
improved, too, as she feasts on God’s Word. She made a goal, and with the Holy Spirit’s help has been able to keep it. Of course, in order to be in the Word, one has to make time. I don’t know if Christine always reads her Scripture portion before she checks her texts and Facebook messages, but she has blocked out time in the morning before the start of her day. She’s finding the day doesn’t seem right without her time with Jesus. When she misses a day, she doesn’t give up, but catches up. Christine is making time for fellowship with other believers, too. She is attending church consistently and participating in a women’s Bible study. These like-minded women keep each other accountable and encourage each other in life’s struggles. She shares with me insights that impact her. It sure is easy to write about physical and spiritual exercise. I know it’s much harder to DO it. The apostle Paul wrote, as is recorded in the Amplified Bible, some very strong thoughts that can apply to both kinds of exercise. He says, “Therefore I always exercise and discipline myself (mortifying my body, deadening my carnal affections, bodily appetites, and worldly desires) endeavoring in all respects to have a clear (unshaken, blameless) conscience, void of offense toward God and toward man” (Acts 24:16). Wow! With the enabling of the Holy Spirit, we can make exercise and do it! Can we really have a healthier body and a blameless conscience? I say YES! Let’s make exercise together!

Freedom - Nothing Left to Lose By: April James
top, in control, and to gain material things that might make us happy, becomes a burden. In fact, it can make us miserable and keep us tied up, causing us to lose freedom and joy. Could it be that freedom is being at ease with ourselves and our Creator? Could freedom be the absence of the need to obtain status, protect an image or have material gain? In that place of sweet surrender to the Lord, giving him the control, we find that, he is not controlling. We have freedom of choice, along with peace and joy. When we are broken before Him, he gently puts the pieces back together, applying his healing salve, his oil of gladness, making us more whole, precious and valuable than before. Yes, freedom is another word for nothing left to lose, because we have already surrendered it all to the Lord for something better, freedom in Him. According to John 8:36 (AMP) “So if the Son liberates you [makes you free…], then you are really and unquestionably free.” Whose way of freedom will we choose? The world’s idea which takes away freedom making us slaves, or the Lord’s way which brings us true freedom?
By: John Stonestreet Breakpoint.org What can inspire a would-be assassin to wash the feet of the man he tried to kill? Only Jesus. Between 1986 and 1991, Adriaan Vlok served as South Africa’s Apartheidera Minister of Law & Order and also sat on South Africa’s State Security Council. Vlok was behind many of the regime’s most repressive and drastic measures: hit squads, bombings and assassinations of anti-apartheid activists. The regime was desperate to stay in power in the wake of growing unrest at home and near-universal condemnation abroad. All of which makes Vlok’s post-apartheid story all the more remarkable. On August 1, 2006, he entered his old workplace in Pretoria and asked to see Frank Chikane, a daily_commentary_06_24_14minister and former anti-apartheid activist who was now serving in the government. As Eve Fairbanks tells readers in the New Republic, Vlok and Chikane had some history: Vlok tried to assassinate Chikane by lacing his underwear with “paraoxon, a potent insecticide.” As comical as that sounds, the effects were no joke: Chikane survived only
after “advanced medical treatment” in the U.S. Why did Vlok want to see Chikane that day? Well, to ask forgiveness. Quaking as he stood before the man he tried to kill, he read from something he’d written on the front of his Bible: “I have sinned against the Lord and against you! Will you forgive me?” He then pulled a bowl out of his briefcase and asked if he could wash Chikane’s feet. A startled Chikane said “yes” and Vlok proceeded to wash his feet. And, as Fairbanks put it, “both men dissolved into tears.” It shouldn’t surprise you to learn that Vlok had had a powerful conversion experience. Reading Jesus’ words about leaving your gift on the altar and being reconciled to your brother prompted Vlok’s seeking forgiveness from his victims. As he told Fairbanks, “I had to start making peace with my brother whom I had hurt.” And sadly, it also shouldn’t surprise you to learn that Vlok’s gestures have not been universally applauded. Janis Joplin sang a song with the lyrics “Freedom is Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Lose”. How true those words are. When we come to the end of ourselves and surrender all to the Lord, we find we have nothing of our own value worth keeping, but all in Christ to gain. Why don’t we like the words surrender and brokenness? Why do our hearts race or we become faint with limp limbs and pale faces at the thought? Do we hold our chins high, while clinching our fists in refusal? Surrender often has a negative connotation of giving up, of failure, of being a prisoner, held against ones will. Brokenness often brings to mind something being damaged, separated into pieces, not working properly, having no value. Neither surrender nor brokenness feel or sound good to our flesh. They also do not line up with the world’s view of how we should live our lives: being strong, independent, in control, putting ourselves and our desires first. We are bombarded from all sides with messages to do whatever we must to get ahead, to obtain more things, things we don’t really need or sometimes even want. We get possessions thinking they will bring us happiness, or obtain them as a status symbol. All this striving to be on

According to a recent survey of church leaders, 50 percent of pastors and 68 percent of Christian men confessed they visit it online weekly.

World Cup Star Clint Dempsey Credits Christ for Success
Carrie Dedrick| Editor, ChristianHeadlines.com United States soccer player Clint Dempsey has represented his country well in the World Cup so far, but he gives all of the credit to Christ. “My parents had started me in the sport to help me learn good people skills. Little did I know that the sport I loved and the skills I learned would later play a role in my relationship with God,” he said. In an interview with Sports Spectrum, Dempsey said he went to church every Sunday as a child, but lost his faith at age 12 when his
sister died suddenly of a brain aneurysm. “For a number of years, I struggled and put distance between God and me. ISIS Begins Imposing Poll Tax on Christians in Mosul By Dan Wooding Founder of ASSIST Ministries MOSUL, IRAQ (ANS) -- According to Alsumaria News, an Arabic language website, the High Commission for Human Rights in Iraq has confirmed that ISIS has begun imposing the jizya, a poll tax, on Christian citizens in Mosul in an attempt to put pressure on them and displace them from the city. The Commission denounced this and called on the government and the international community to put an end to it. In a story from the Assyrian International News Agency (www. aina.org), a member of the Council of High Commission for Human Rights in Iraq, Salama AlKhafaji, stated in an interview that ISIS “is imposing on Christians a minimum payment of $250, with amount varying depending on the type of work/profession performed by Christian citizens.” She further said that “the economic situation in Mosul is extremely
difficult, and there are no financial resources or job opportunities except for vegetable shops, any other businesses are non-existent. Citizens are at a loss now as to how to make ends meet; how can they pay those amounts to ISIS?” Ms. AlKhafaji denounced “this work,” calling on the Iraqi government and the international community to “put an end to this matter.” Sources in the Nineveh province confirmed on Friday that ISIS has begun imposing jizya on Christians in Mosul, so as not to kill them or seize their property. Not much of a choice for these beleaguered Christians! (Editor’s Note: It is an outrage what is done in the name of Islam. We are blessed in this land but are rapidly losing our rights here as well. PLEASE pray for them as well as all those persecuted around the world. Also, pray that God will preserve our rights as Americans despite what we allow to happen in our own “backyard”!)

IRAQI CONFLICT: IS AMERICA IN DANGER? Jim Denison Denisonforum.org Sen. Lindsey Graham serves on the Committee on Armed Services and the Committee on Homeland Security. He tells CBS News that “the seeds of 9/11s are being planted all over Iraq and Syria. They want an Islamic caliphate that runs through Syria and Iraq . . . and they plan to drive us out of the Mideast by attacking us here at home.” Is there reason to be so alarmed? Absolutely. First, we need a very brief lesson in Muslim politics. As you know, militants have taken Mosul, the second-largest city in Iraq, and are advancing on its capital city of Baghdad. They are Sunnis (85 percent of the Islamic world), Muslims who believe that the “caliphs” who succeeded the Prophet Muhammed were God’s intended leaders for global Islam. This leadership position (known as the “caliphate”) was abolished by Turkey in 1923. As Sen. Graham notes, many Sunnis want to reestablish the caliphate as a base for global Islamic expansion. Shiites (15 percent of the Muslim world) disagree. They claim that Muhammad’s son-in-law, Ali,
was the Prophet’s proper successor. Most believe that eleven other successors (whom they call “imams”) followed; they say that the Twelfth Imam disappeared in A.D. 941, but will appear again at the end of history to dominate the world for Islam. Sunni militants formed the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in 2006, after a Shiite-dominated coalition came to power following the fall of Saddam Hussein. ISIS has been planning the current offensive ever since. Their goal is to destroy the Shiite authorities in the region and gain control of much of Syria and Iraq so they can reestablish the caliphate. Why would it serve their aims to attack America and the West? Militant Muslims believe that attacking us is a defense of Islam required by the Qur’an. Many also want to see Israel destroyed. In addition, our military presence in the Middle East is a barrier to ISIS’s militant vision. If attacking Westerners would cause our citizens to force a military withdrawal from the Middle East, their goal would be fulfilled. Not surprisingly, when the ISIS leader was released from

His change of heart even extends to his living arrangements: When Fairbanks visited his home, she found two recovering alcoholics and a just-released prisoner living with him. Reading his story, what comes to mind is that it’s the kind of turnaround that only Christianity can produce. It’s a story about repentance, forgiveness, humbling oneself, and, ultimately, restoration of what was broken. Yes, forgiveness figures in other religions too, but Christianity uniquely marries forgiveness to restoration and newness of life. As Fairbanks noted, Vlok’s conversion broke “his deepseated sense of inner superiority.” This brash self-confidence,
Fairbanks tells us, figures prominently in Afrikaner culture. But in kneeling before Chikane, Vlok saw “the fundamental error of those beliefs.” In their place was a willingness to serve those he once thought to be inferior, those he thought should be serving him. A black pastor whose feet Vlok washed called the experience “explosive,” one “that actually changed the whole church.” Fairbanks writes that Vlok’s “transformation has been so complete, it seems almost too good to be true,” something I remember hearing about my mentor Chuck Colson. But for those who know Jesus it’s not too good to be true. It’s what His Gospel is all about. And we don’t all have to fly to South Africa to see it in action. We should see it all around us, wherever we find Christ’s church.

American captivity in 2009 he said, “I’ll see you guys in New York.” What will happen? I’ve written a longer essay on this issue, “Why Iraq Matters,” but I’ll summarize five predictions. First, the conflict in Iraq expresses centuries-old animosity and will continue. Second, the war could escalate, drawing in Iran (supporting the Shiites) against Saudi Arabia and other Sunni nations. The results for the global economy and oil prices could be devastating. Third, Christians will face increasing persecution. More than half have already fled Iraq and others
are following. Fourth, other countries will work for a unity government in Iraq sharing power between Sunnis and Shiites, a call President Obama and other leaders have already issued to the Shiite-led nation. Fifth, Christians will unite in praying for war to end and spiritual awakening in the Muslim world to spread. A pastor in Iraq was asked by an American missionary how he has maintained his joy in the face of mortal danger and national turmoil. His answer: “My Savior Jesus is with us wherever we go and he will never leave us.”

The top legislative body of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) took major steps this week toward recognizing “gay marriage” – but that action doesn’t represent all Presbyterian groups. The General Assembly voted Thursday in favor of redefining marriage as the union of two people instead of a man and a woman. The amendment will take effect if a majority of the 172 regional presbyteries approve it over the next year. Meanwhile, the Presbyterian delegates also voted to immediately allow pastors to preside at same-sex “weddings” in states that recognize same-sex marriage. Carmen Fowler LaBerge, president of the Presbyterian Lay Committee, spoke with OneNewsNow following the vote to clarify what could be confusing to some observers. “... I want to be really clear about who did this and who did not do this,” she says, “because the Presbyterian Church in America
(PCA) is meeting in Houston this week and the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC) is meeting in Knoxville. But the action that was taken by Presbyterians was the PCUSA meeting in Detroit, Michigan. I’ve actually been asked by the other two denominations to clarify this when I talk about it. I’m happy to do that.” LaBerge says God’s biblical design for human sexuality is clearly the complimentary relationship of one man, one woman. She adds that Jesus affirmed this in his participation in the wedding at Cana in the Gospel of John, as well as His teachings about divorce. “In his teaching about divorce, Jesus clearly looks back at the Genesis text and says, ‘Have you not heard, have you not read?’” she offers. “That’s really the question ... that I think is important to ask: Have people not read what the scriptures say about this – and do they care what the scriptures say or do they just care what they want to do?” In 2011, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) removed church restrictions on ordaining clergy with same-sex partners.

John was dumped soon after delivery by his mother who first tried to beat him to death by hitting him repeatedly in the head. She then put him in a plastic bag and dumped him in a waste bin. He was found in the morning inside the bag and barely alive. He was brought to the hospital and stayed there until the age of three months. He then was admitted to the Orphanage through Social Welfare. John attends a special school called Uhuru (“Freedom”) Primary School. Recently, being in a somewhat funky mood, I decided I wanted to listen to some of my favorite songs that I grew up. I was hoping that listening to those songs would somehow bring me out of my funk. Two of my favorite groups were America along with the Eagles. So I listened to America’s – Sister Golden Hair, and the Eagles; Lyin’ Eyes as well as a few other classic songs from the 70s. I enjoyed listening to the first few songs but still wasn’t out of my funk. Then I became painfully aware of an emptiness (a very tangible emptiness) that I felt after listening to these songs. I can’t really describe it any other way other than I felt empty. That happened early evening on a Tuesday. I didn’t think anymore about it until the following morning while driving to work. I was listening to an old Christian song that was playing (I don’t remember the name) but God’s Holy Spirit was clearly speaking to me bringing back to my memory the emptiness that I felt from listening to my old favorite secular songs the night before and contrasting them with the wonderful promises of God and the wonderful Character of God that were clearly presented in this Christian song. by David McLain Yuba City High School Throughout my life, I have changed what I want to be when I grow up many a time. Of course, when we’re younger, we all do. One day, we want to be a fire fighter; the next, we want to be rock stars. For me, I have had to do some soul searching. When I was younger, I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do. I can’t say that I know exactly what it is that I want, even now. I have bounced between being a missionary, in the military, and various other potential careers in my search. I think that being a missionary would still be pretty cool. I have seen and met the students who became homeless in The Human Experience, and some of my closest friends have spent years overseas, spreading the Gospel. Although I still wish to have my every day walk be a light to those in the darkness, I have seen and talked to some of my friends, who have decided to choose this lifestyle, and the reasons that they chose to do so, and the fact that my reasons for wanting to be a
missionary are so different than theirs (more self-serving), God has led me to believe that this was not what he called me to become. I have also often felt a great draw to the military. My father served in the Air Force for 24 years. I have friends who have become marines, and one of my greatest youth mentors now serves in Georgia at a naval submarine base. However, I personally do not believe that the military is where God wants me to be. Although I have a great respect for those who lay down their lives for our country, I do not believe that a military lifestyle is part of God’s plan for my life. My favorite verse in the Bible is Jeremiah 29: 11—“For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord.’ Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” I believe that God has readily equipped us for what he wants us to do with our lives. He has given me an intense love of physics, moving parts, and computers. Thus I have decided to spend the next four years of my life studying Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles. I also am planning on minoring in communication, specifically sign language, so I can help reach out to the hearing impaired in my workforce and in my life. Other than that, I do not know what God has in store for me. But whatever he does, even if it means giving up my current university goals, I believe that it is for my best, because, as it says in Jeremiah, God knows his plan for our life. How he chooses to reveal it to us is his decision.

by Jon Skillman The other morning I read an article about a trend where people hire professional photographers to “shoot their everyday lives.” As I read, it dawned on me that the moment a photographer shows up it is no longer an everyday in your life…it is now a staged and cropped day in your life. I imagined elaborate lighting, boom box blaring, fan blown hair and cameras clicking off more shots than an AK47. Well it’s probably not as dramatic as a fashion shoot, but there would be posing, camera angles and enhancement involved. Have you noticed how reality has taken on a whole new meaning lately? Reality has pretty much become whatever you want it to be… it is quickly becoming synonym for contrived. Think reality TV. Anyway, the New York City photo company featured in the article will also shoot a photo record of your visit to New York City. You know, photographing you taking in the sights of The Big Apple. In other words, you become the sight to be seen in The Big Apple. The company also has the ability to immediately post these images on your social media site of choice. A spokesman for the photo company stated, “We want your social media friends to be VERY jealous!” Isn’t envy a sin?

The photo guy then goes on to ask: “Why would anybody want to post a blurry cell-phone selfie when you can wow your social media friends with crisp, clear, high quality professional photos? Well, it could be the cost. Prices range from $230 for a twohour home session to $260 for a ninety-minute sightseeing shoot. But hey…who can put a price on vanity? This all seem so self-promoting and braggadocios to me. It takes me back to the, “Look at me” days of our childhood. You know, when we’d cry out…“Look at me mommy,” then we did something impressive or impressively stupid. But we kind of out grew that desperate plea for attention …or at least hid it behind a veil of cultured humility, but today… not so much. Paul warns us in Philippians 2:3, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourself.” I didn’t read any such sentiment in that article. In fact, in this age of digital narcissism the cry has gotten even louder. And I believe it is all driven by pride. James 4:6 says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” But here’s the problem; this has nothing to do with God…it’s all about me, myself and I. And “I” is at the center of both PRIDE and SIN. This is where secular progressive ideology has brought us. We are becoming our own god, to be envied and praised through a manufactured reality. A reality created in our own contrived image.“For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” Luke 14:11. The true reality is: There is only one God and one reality. Get into both.
DO RIGHT WHEN EXERCISING YOUR RIGHTS We hear a lot of talk these days about rights. Gay Rights, illegal immigrant rights, atheist rights, etc. Conservatives are also very concerned about their rights: Gun rights, First Amendment rights, privacy rights, etc. Christians also seem to be very adamant about our right to worship, our religious rights, etc. So what about all these rights? We have been blessed to live in a land set up to give freedom unknown to most of the world. Unfortunately, the tide has been turning. Many of our rights are beginning to go away thanks to a change in society and government. There are times, however, when I feel like we Christians wave the flag of entitlement when there are laws, policies, or ordinances that everyone is expected to follow but we feel that it doesn’t apply to us. Case in point: I went to a festival where there were some street preachers, standing on a stool with a megaphone. Now, I’m all for preaching the Gospel to a lost and dying world. I applaud the boldness of these folks and no one would think of them being ashamed of Christ. That said, I

have personally never felt that shouting at people on a public street has ever brought people to Christ. I know that I’ve heard many people react negatively to them. In this case the festival coordinator approached the men about policies and requested that they refrain from using the megaphone. After a small argument about their rights, they complied. I personally don’t like to push sights or sounds in people’s faces. I also don’t like it done to me. You would probably like me as a neighbor because I am a very quiet and considerate of my neighbors and appreciate that reciprocated. My right to a good time (Christian or not) should not impede on another’s right to quiet (within reason of course). Should we blast Christian music at a park because we want to share the Lord with people? I don’t find that to be a good witness. How about going over and sharing your bbq with them? I like what St. Francis says “Preach the Gospel always and if necessary, use words”. Let’s not bully our way to preach by demanding our rights.
