PLACES 25 OF THE WORLDS MOST BREATHTAKING VIEWS
Advertisement
Even seasoned travellers will tell you that sometimes, they need to take a step back and drink it all in. The world is filled with jaw-dropping places to do just that, whether you want a million-dollar view of a city skyline or an awe-inspiring natural landscape. Martin Mason takes you through his standout spots across the globe that need to move to the very top of your travel list.
By Martin Mason, compiled by Lacey Reddin
LANDMANNALAUGAR, ICELAND GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE, SAN FRANCISCO
This otherworldly landscape is full of scenic panoramas and geological extremes. There are colourful rhyolite peaks, volcanic craters, and steaming hot springs. Neighbouring black lava fields make the peaks stand out even more, especially at sunrise and sunset. During summer, hiking is popular, as are dips in the hot pools. While a trip to Iceland may sound pricey, there are ways to visit this Nordic country without spending a fortune. Have you really been to San Francisco if you haven’t stood in awe of the Golden Gate Bridge? You can cross the famed orange suspension bridge on foot or bike during daylight hours. For that incomparable sunset shot with San Francisco in the background, head to Battery Spencer in the Marin Headlands just north of the bridge. Taking in the famed landmark is just one of many cheap or free activities to enjoy in the City by the Bay.
WHEN TO GO:
Summertime, as the F-roads leading to the hiking trails and the information cabin are open for tourists.
WHEN TO GO:
September- October as the fog dissipates and the temperature becomes warm and enjoyable.
Landmannalaugar, Iceland

BURJ KHALIFA, DUBAI MILFORD SOUND, NEW ZEALAND
Visit the observation deck at the world’s tallest skyscraper for outstanding views of the human-made splendour of Dubai, as well as the desert beyond. But don’t miss the view at the bottom, too — the whole building often becomes a canvas for a spectacular LED light show, and the Dubai Fountain show below runs every half-hour at night. Closer to home are numerous other skyscrapers that are not quite so tall but boast their own panoramic views.
WHEN TO GO:
All year round between 4-6PM to view the sensational sunset A cruise along this well-known South Island fjord yields loads of truly spectacular scenery: There are craggy mountains shooting straight up from the water, including famous Mitre Peak; stunning waterfalls; and wildlife galore, including fur seals, dolphins, and penguins. Hiking and kayaking are also popular here, but bring your poncho: The area gets plenty of rain.
WHEN TO GO:
Peak season is November to March, when the sound hosts up to 2,000 visitors a day.
Burj Khalifa, Dubai

SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA, CHILE TAJ MAHAL, INDIA
Salar de Atacama, the biggest salt flat in Chile, lies just beyond this adobe village. Here you’ll find huge pools of shallow water that reflect the Andes Mountains as well as stunning birds, including several kinds of flamingos. At night, the Atacama’s clear skies and high altitude make the desert an ideal star-gazing location. The panorama of north-central India’s Taj Mahal and its long reflecting pool is one of the most iconic in the world. Get up early to be among the first to enter the grounds of this massive marble mausoleum and take comparatively uncrowded photos, or venture across the Yamuna River to the Mehtab Bagh Gardens and snap some sunset pictures in relative peace.
WHEN TO GO:
The summer months of December, January, and February.
San Pedro De Atacama, Chile
WHEN TO GO:
From March to June is the best time to visit the monument.

CINQUE TERRE, ITALY PEGGY’S POINT , CANADA
It’s hard to find a corner of the Cinque Terre that isn’t irresistibly picturesque. These five seaside villages on the Italian Riviera are made up of pastel buildings threatening to spill into the sea, bustling harbours, steep stairs, and narrow lanes. No list of gorgeous views is complete without a lighthouse standing proud on a rugged, rocky shoreline. Built-in 1915, the Peggy’s Point Lighthouse in Nova Scotia fits the bill and is among the most photographed lighthouses in Canada. Scramble over the rocks to savour the scenic coast and explore the equally photogenic fishing village of Peggy’s Cove while you’re there.
WHEN TO GO:
September and October when summertime’s tourists have returned home – and cooler temps and emptied-out trails await.
WHEN TO GO:
The best time to visit regarding weather, sunshine hours, and crowds are April - June and September – October.
Peggy’s Point Lighthouse, Canada
BAGAN, MYANMAR TWELVE APOSTLES, AUSTRALIA
Gazing upon the ancient Buddhist temples of Bagan, many built between the ninth and 13th centuries, will transport you to another time. There are more than 2,000, many of which are open for exploration. There are several hills and platforms that allow views of the whole area, or travellers with deep pockets can splurge on a hotair balloon. Views of this stretch of the southeastern Australian coast can put most others to shame. The “apostles” are actually limestone pillars that rise imposingly out of the ocean, cut off from the cliffs on the mainland by the forces of wind and water. Experienced hikers can save the Twelve Apostles as the finale for the eight-day Great Ocean Walk along the coast.
WHEN TO GO:
Between November and February when temperatures hit 30C.
WHEN TO GO:
Summer time, either at sunrise or sunset, with those times providing the best photography opportunities due to the light.
The Twelve Apostles, Australia

Christmas market located in Machu Picchu, Peru
Tallin, Estonia
LION’S HEAD, SOUTH AFRICA
MACHU PICCHU, PERU
Located between Table Mountain and Signal Hill, Lion’s Head is well known for its striking 360-degree panorama: Gaze down upon all of Cape Town on one side, and Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. During a full moon, take an hourlong hike to the top for a striking and unique perspective. This breathtaking Incan empire was built atop the Andes Mountains. Called the “Lost of City of Incas,” the combination of intense landscape, archaeological sites, and excellent trekking conditions has earned Machu Picchu the reputation as one of most beautiful places in the world. Get there on the famous Inca Trail, or take a train and a bus without breaking a sweat.
WHEN TO GO:
All year round but the best times to hike the Lion’s Head are during the sunrise and the sunset.
Lions Head Cape Town, South Africa
WHEN TO GO:
July and August is peak season, when the highest number of visitors are taking on the Inca Trail.

ANTELOPE CANYON, ARIZONA HALLSTATT, AUSTRIA
Once you’ve tired of the stunningly grand vistas at the Grand Canyon, get a far different take on the desert. To the north is Antelope Canyon, the most visited slot canyon in the American Southwest. The surreal landscape was formed by flash floods rushing through sandstone. Seeing the rays of light shooting through Upper Antelope Canyon is worth the drive alone. If any town on Earth reaches fairytale levels of perfection, it’s the small village of Hallstatt. Wedged between the mountains and an alpine lake, Hallstatt has it all: the cobblestone centre square, timber-framed baroque buildings with generous flower boxes, and a beautiful church with a tall steeple. Take a boat tour for the best views.
WHEN TO GO:
The peak season at Upper Antelope Canyon runs between May and September.
Hallstatt, Austria
WHEN TO GO:
March to May is the best time to visit if you want to avoid the crowds
PAMUKKALE, TURKEY RAINBOW MOUNTAINS, CHINA
The stunning white travertine terraces of Pamukkale — that’s “Cotton Castle” in Turkish — are deposits leftover from the area’s abundant hot springs. Though sunset is especially picturesque, anyone who wants to splash in the pools should go in the morning to beat the crowds. If the terraces aren’t enough for you, there are also remains of an ancient Greco-Roman spa city to explore. Layers of mineral deposits have formed the spectacular spectrum of colours in these mountains, found in the Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park in north-central Gansu province. Several viewing platforms inside the park allow awesome views of the colourful, undulating peaks, which are particularly stunning at sunrise and sunset.
WHEN TO GO:
In the spring (Apr-May) when weather is moderate and days are long.
WHEN TO GO:
The best time to visit is June-August. The skies will be blue, the temperature is comfortable, and the terrain is perfect.
Pamukkale, Turkey

Victoria Falls, Zambia VICTORIA FALLS, ZAMBIA EASTER ISLAND, CHILE
No single photo can do Victoria Falls justice. The Zambezi River tumbles more than 350 feet here, and rainy season can send more than 500 million cubic meters of water over the edge each minute. There are several awe-inspiring vantage points: One of the best is from a stomach-churningly high pedestrian span named Knife Edge Bridge. The water is most forceful from April to June, but that also means there’s an intense spray from the falls. Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui, has long been a source of stunning but mysterious views for travellers who make it out to this isolated Pacific island, more than 2,000 miles from the Chilean coast. Breathtaking panoramas of the famous half-buried moai statues await on the slopes of Rano Raraku volcano and the Ahu Tongariki ceremonial platform.
WHEN TO GO:
The best time to visit is February to May, directly after the region’s summer rains, when you’ll see the world’s largest sheet of falling water.
WHEN TO GO:
Between The best time to visit is April-June and October-December
Easter Island, Chile

DEADVLEI, NAMIBIA BIG SUR, CALIFORNIA
Striking Deadvlei presents a desert landscape unlike any other: spindly tree limbs from dead camel thorn trees shooting up through a white clay pan floor, silhouetted against towering golden-red dunes. One of those dunes, known as “Big Daddy,” towers over most others at more than 1,000 feet tall. The truly ambitious can climb it for a panoramic view.
WHEN TO GO:
Early morning or late afternoon to avoid being out in the heat of the midday sun. You’ll have your pick of stunning views in Big Sur, along California’s rugged northern coast. Most Pacific Coast Highway travellers pull over at the iconic Bixby Bridge, one of the most photographed spots in central California. Or head to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and take a short hike to McWay Falls for a spectacular view of a massive waterfall meeting the beach.
WHEN TO GO:
The best time to visit is from September to November.
Deadvlei, Nambia

OIA, SANTORINI, GREECE TIGER’S NEST, BHUTAN
Arrive early to the village of Oia, famous for its white hillside buildings and blue-domed churches, to watch the sun set into the azure Aegean Sea. Most evenings, crowds gather in the streets and around the crumbling castle on the town’s highest point to watch the fiery orangered burst meet the blue sea.waterfall meeting the beach. This monastery, also known as Taktsang, clings to the cliffs thousands of feet above the Paro Valley in the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. Though it can be viewed from afar, the more adventurous can follow a steep trail and visit the temples themselves, where views of the valley below are spectacular, too.
WHEN TO GO:
From September to October and April to May when the weather is warm and the crowds are scarce.
Tigers Nest, Bhutan
WHEN TO GO:
October to December is the best time to visit Bhutan, when the weather is clear and cool.
Treasures of Turkey

For avid travellers, over 500 cities to visit in Turkey present an excellent insight into the country. From the most famous and popular to fascinating metropolises that will redefine everything you thought you knew about, visit in summer or winter for a short break or on a quick day trip. Turkish cities offer a rich diversity of social opportunities from arts and culture, culinary adventures, shopping bonanzas and an exciting collection of nostalgic architecture. Some are also home to historical sites and have a beautiful story to tell of bygone eras. Written by Martin Mason, compiled by Lacey Reddin

The Blue Mosque, Istanbul Istanbul: Top Visited City in Turkey
Istanbul ranks as a top ten visited world city and in 2014, even beat London and Rome to become Trip Advisor’s most popular travel destination. It is Turkey’s most extensive and populated metropolis. Still, spots like Sultanahmet square, ooze touristic vibes as thousands of people make their way around historical landmark buildings like the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace. A modern, upbeat pace determines trends of Istiklal Avenue in the Beyoglu district. This street isn’t so much about tourism but spending loads of money and partying. As global tourism trends promoted cultural neighbourhood exploration, more tourists are also discovering neighbourhoods like Fener and Balat. Much of Istanbul’s tourism scene happens on the European side, but don’t neglect places like Kadikoy on the Asian side that offer just as much.

Antalya: City of Beaches
Sitting further along the Mediterranean coastline, Antalya, another prominent Turkish Riviera hub, has something extra to boast about. Users of Trip Advisor consistently vote Lara and Konyaalti as the best beaches in Turkey. The pace of life is faster than Fethiye, but its prominent location on the D400 highway means getting to quieter and smaller coastal resorts is easy. Should you want to mix up your city break with a sporty holiday, Turkey’s golfing capital, Belek is just 40 minutes’ drive away. Otherwise, additional tourist attractions include the old neighbourhood of Kaleici, Archaeological Museum, Duden waterfalls, and the aquarium. It is also easy to get to the Antalya centre’s surrounding attractions, including Mount Tahtali cable car, the ancient ruins and Apollo temple of Side, and the ancient cities of Phaselis and Aspendos.

Despite being Turkey’s third-largest city, Izmir remained off the radar of foreign holidaymakers for many decades, but this is all changing as Izmir becomes an ideal alternative to the more rushed and busier Istanbul. In recent years, the slower-paced lifestyle has sparked a growing trend of Turks moving from Istanbul to Izmir. Ask any local, and they will tell you, Izmir has a different outlook to the rest of Turkey. A pleasure-seeking vibe leads society; hence locals don’t care about your social background, religious views, or a need to conform. If self-indulgence is your top requirement on holiday, Izmir delivers it in style. Konak, the old part of town, holds important landmarks like the clock tower and Asansor restaurant and viewpoint. Alsancak is the hub of partying and shopping, Karsiyaka is the best place to watch the sunset and Kordon promenade is a great place to hang out, people watch and enjoy seafood and fish in popular restaurants. Otherwise, mix up your trip by visiting Alacati, a nearby coastal resort called Turkey’s windsurfing capital.

Ankara: The Beating Heart of Turkey
Many newcomers to Turkey still think Istanbul is the capital, but Ankara is the pulsating heart and ruling centre. Often overtaken in visitor numbers by Istanbul and Antalya, visitors who want a mix of old and modern will find what they are looking for. Naturally, as a large metropolis, shopping and partying lead the social scene, but most domestic and foreign tourists visit one landmark: the Anitkabir. As the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the Turkish Republic’s founding father, it is the topvisited landmark comprising an art gallery, the green peace park, ceremonial walk and hall of honours. Ankara Castle, the second top-visited landmark also gives off a stunning 360-degree panoramic view.

Konak Square, Izmir Konya: The City of Rumi
As a conservative Turkey hub, nightclub and partying fans will be disappointed with Konya, but that’s not why people flock there anyway. Sitting in central Anatolia near Cappadocia, another popular tourist destination, Konya is home to Rumi’s tomb. He was a 13th-century Islamic scholar and poet whose works were published in many languages leading fans to label him the world’s greatest poet. Mevlana Museum is where his tomb is, and they also display a striking collection of art and antiques. Rumi was a follower of the Sufi order, a branch of Islam that is more known for its whirling dervishes. At the same museum, visitors can buy tickets to see them perform their famous Sema ritual that involves spinning around in circles to become at one with God.

Trabzon: Favourite of Middle Eastern Nationalities
Sitting in the Black sea’s north-east region, for decades, people only mentioned Trabzon when talking about their football club or status as Turkey’s top producer of hazelnuts. The past five years changed this when it garnered fame with Middle Eastern tourists because of cultural similarities and easy access to plateau tourism hotspots like Ayder plateau and Uzungol. Once again, visitors shouldn’t expect a vibrant nightlife scene. Still, the centre has beautiful landmarks to visit including Ataturk’s house and Hagia Sophia (not to be confused with the bigger one in Istanbul.) A short bus ride away, visitors also get to experience beautiful green landscapes of Macka National Park and its prize gem, Sumela Monastery.

Bursa has also grown in popularity not only with Middle-Eastern holidaymakers but also with foreign property buyers. It is highly underrated, and as a former Ottoman capital, the stunning architecture of landmark buildings is a perfect portrayal of their excellence and heritage. It is not just a place to visit in summer because, during winter, nearby Uludag mountain becomes one of Turkey’s top skiing destinations. Such is its cultural importance; in 2014, the UNESCO World Heritage Site council included Bursa and Cumalikizik village to their collection.
