Cruising on the Douro River, Portugal

Our Story

Family-owned and operated, AmaWaterways was founded in 2002; however, our river cruise story began well before that. Co-Founder and CEO Rudi Schreiner was born in Vienna, at the heart of the Danube. Combining his passions for both architecture and travel, Rudi became a driving force for river cruising after the completion of the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal. For these efforts, he has been recognized as the “Most Innovative Cruise Executive” and was bestowed the prestigious “Lifetime Achievement Award” by Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA).

Co-Founder and Chief Brand Ambassador Kristin Karst brings extensive experience in luxury travel, river cruising and customer service to AmaWaterways. Rudi and Kristin partnered with Jimmy Murphy, a brilliant travel entrepreneur who built Brendan Vacations. His son, Co-Owner Gary Murphy, now carries on his father’s legacy.

Our commitment to creating the premier travel experience for our guests is what makes an AmaWaterways river cruise truly exceptional. We have received countless awards and accolades, including being named ASTA's 2024 River Cruise Partner of the Year and Partner Company of the Year, and being honored as Best River Cruise Line by both Cruise Critic and Global Traveler's Leisure Lifestyle Awards. However, we never rest on our laurels. In 2025, our continued innovation includes the debut of AmaSintra on Portugal's Douro River as well as AmaMagdalena and AmaMelodia in Colombia, as we proudly become the first major river cruise line to explore the Magdalena River. We will also welcome guests on board our new 7-night Best of the Danube itinerary and will debut our new 14-night Grand River Cruises in Europe.

Unparalleled Service

We consider our guests distinguished members of our extended family, and we work hard to make sure that feeling is mutual.

ONBOARD CREW

Going above and beyond to ensure our guests have a memorable journey, our genuinely warm and welcoming crew take the greatest pride in seeing our guests smile. From the personable Captain, who hands them a red rose during a special cocktail evening, to the bartender who remembers they take their drink with lime, they will be pleasantly surprised by the lengths we take to bring them delight.

CRUISE MANAGERS AND EXPERT GUIDES

AmaWaterways’ Cruise Managers are in a class by themselves. Not only are they friendly and warm-hearted, but they also have extensive experience in providing exceptional levels of personalized service. With a deep passion for what they do, our Cruise Managers are extremely knowledgeable about the places we visit, making them your ideal destination concierge.

Our people are the reason more guests return to AmaWaterways than any other river cruise line — a testament to their passion and unrivaled service.

What Makes River Cruising Special

If the heart of Europe lies in its cities, then the rivers are the vital arteries that take you there – and AmaWaterways does so with seamless finesse. The fastest growing travel segment, river cruising is a smaller, more intimate journey that allows your clients to explore sprawling cities and charming hamlets not accessible to large oceangoing vessels.

» A great value: dining, shore excursions, drinks, Wi-Fi and entertainment are all included

» Intimate ships accommodate less guests than ocean cruises, offering more personal space

» Ship docks in the heart of the city, with many sites within walking distance

» Discover several cities in different countries – and unpack only once

» Enriching daily cultural experiences that immerse your clients into local life

» Guests can pack for a casually elegant atmosphere; formal clothing is not required

» No ocean waves means no opportunity for seasickness

» All staterooms and public areas have a view – from terraced vineyards to fairytale castles and spires

» Perfect for solo travelers who find it easy to meet kindred cruisers on board

» Popular and easy to plan for groups – we take care of every detail

Points of Distinction

100% Focused on River Cruising and Dedicated to Supporting Your Business

Since the beginning, we have focused on what we do best: river cruising. But we are more than just a river cruise supplier; we are your business partner. We remain committed to our travel advisors because we recognize your partnership is the best way to distribute our product.

Highest Repeat Guest Rate in River Cruising

Our extraordinary crew and Cruise Managers go above and beyond, getting to know guests personally and anticipating their needs before they ask. Our people are the main reason more guests return to cruise with us than with any other river cruise line – a testament to their passion and unrivaled service.

Thoughtfully Designed Ships with Enhanced Personal Space

Our ships welcome an average of 156 guests, ensuring a comfortable and uncrowded experience. For instance, AmaMagna is twice the width of traditional river cruise ships yet accommodates only 25% more guests, offering plenty of space for private moments and breathtaking views.

Favorable Payment and Commission Policies

Full payment is not due until 90 days prior to departure – regardless of promotions, ensuring guests have plenty of time and flexibility to save for their vacation. In addition, travel advisors earn up to 18% commission on groups, with all commission paid beginning 30 days prior to departure.

All Experiences are Included

Guests are pampered with everything they need and more, from specialty dining to hosted wellness activities to innovations such as AmaMagna’s pickleball court. We also include up to eight or more daily excursions: guided hikes and bike tours, city tours offered at three activity levels, visits to historic landmarks and exclusive châteaux, culinary demonstrations, wine tastings and excursions for late risers, all operated in small groups and all included in the cruise fare.

Local Culinary Immersion

As the first river cruise line to be inducted in La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, we are proud to bring the taste of each country to our plate at every meal – including at The Chef’s Table specialty restaurant. Guests indulge in local flavors and even witness the journey of some of the fresh, seasonal ingredients we prepare on board with visits to nearby markets, farms, wineries and distilleries.

Sip & Savor With Our Compliments

Unlimited regional wines are thoughtfully selected to enhance the dining, with sparkling wine available at breakfast, a different red and white poured each day, and a Sip & Sail cocktail hour serving cocktails, wine, beer, spirits and mocktails, all included in your river cruise fare.

Innovation and Sustainability

Pioneers in the industry, we continue to innovate, offering the industry’s first river cruises in Colombia. We are also committed to respecting the ecosystems and communities we cruise through, implementing sustainable features such as LED lighting and solar panels, and offering unique experiences that both support local economies and preserve time-honored traditions.

Leading the Way in Inclusivity and Diversity

We have been honored with awards for our efforts toward greater diversity, equity and inclusion and are proud to offer Latin Touch cruises for Spanish speakers as well as Soulful Experiences celebrating Black heritage and culture. We also welcome guests of every generation on board.

Our Innovative Fleet

AmaWaterways' CEO, Rudi Schreiner, has played a pivotal role in the renaissance of river cruising. His high standards and innovative drive are reflected in the design of every AmaWaterways ship.

» AmaWaterways was the first to offer twin-balcony staterooms — a French balcony and a full outside balcony.

» Twice as wide as traditional European river cruise ships, our AmaMagna is reimagining river cruising on the Danube with its multiple dining venues as well as the expansive Zen Wellness Studio, full-sized pickleball court and so much more. AmaMagna was also built with quieter, more fuel-efficient engines to lessen its impact on the environment.

» Our European fleet is uniquely designed with a shallow draft to permit sailing in low water conditions — and 20 European ships have received the Green Award for industry-leading safety, quality and environmental performance.

» The ship’s wheelhouse is engineered to pass under low bridges, so if the water level rises, we can cruise with minimal interruption.

» The ship’s lounge has an open flow design to offer full panoramic views of passing scenery.

Award-Winning River Cruise Ships

AmaWaterways’ stunning and spacious river cruise ships accommodate an average of just 156 guests on board yet offer the luxury of space, generous amenities and breathtaking views at every bend. Each ship has been thoughtfully designed to reflect the surrounding destinations, with upscale comforts and innovations that enhance the guest experience and sustainable features that highlight our commitment to protecting the natural ecosystems we cruise through.

Secrets of Egypt & the Nile

Considered one of the cradles of civilization, Egypt has been dependent on the Nile River since ancient times. Without its water, rich soil, papyrus reeds, fish and fowl life, Egyptian culture would never have existed. It was from these natural resources that one of the greatest civilizations emerged, with a complex belief system, mystifying rituals, brilliant artistry, ingenious feats of engineering and awe-inspiring archaeological treasures that changed the course of history. Perhaps this is why the Greek historian Herodotus called Egypt the “Gift of the Nile,” since without its water, the Egyptian empire would not have emerged.

Africa Safaris & Wildlife Cruises

Wildlife gathers at the bank of the Chobe River

Roam Far, Wander Wide in Africa

Iconic wildlife, awe-inspiring natural beauty, cosmopolitan cities and time-honored traditions – nothing can quite prepare your clients for a “bucket list” experience in Africa. They’ll be treated to up-close encounters with the animals in their natural habitat while on their four-night Zambezi Queen wildlife and safari cruise. Each method of safari provides an extraordinarily distinctive perspective for wildlife viewing. Double decker barges let them venture into the smaller channels of the park, offering an unusual viewpoint to observe hippos and elephants. Driving through the park in open-top vehicles allows the safari to search a wider span and more easily follow game in motion. They’ll also go on an unforgettable visit to a typical African village to experience the local culture first hand. They will spend time with the children of the village as well as its elders, and learn about their day-to-day life. Experience the amazing world of Chobe National Park, known as the “Land of the Giants.”

OPTIONAL EXTENSION: 4 NIGHTS

POST-TOUR RWANDAN GORILLA EXPERIENCE
