Bosjas Chapel

Bosjes Estate was founded in 1870 in the Breede Valley (known as "Little Switzerland") north of the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek regions, known for their Tuscan-style landscape and enviable wine production. Steyn Studio was asked to design a chapel to be built on the vast grounds of the estate.

Constructed from a slim cast concrete shell, the undulating roof rises to form six peaks –one at each corner and one in the middle of each long elevation. It is supported at four points where it falls dramatically to meet the ground. This building has a modern feel to it due to the curves, which creates a unique shape, from a distance it almost looks like some sort of flower, or even a giant paper origami model of some sort. Inspired by the simplicity of the Moravian Mission Stations established on Cape Dutch farms in the 19th Century, the chapel lacks a spire –relinquishing a sense of significance in relation to its impressive natural surroundings. I think the overall atmosphere this building has is rather unique as it is futuristic but is built near mountains. This gives the visitors a nice view
