A Message from the Amarillo College Foundation Chairman Dear Friends & Supporters of Amarillo College,

It has been my pleasure and privilege to serve as chairman of the Amarillo College Foundation for the past year.

The year has been extremely busy and productive for the foundation. Because of our hardworking Board of Directors and our excellent staff, we have accomplished many of the goals that we set. Below are some of the things that made 2011-2012 special.

Amarillo College was officially designated the first community college to be a part of the “No Excuses Program.” This initiative challenges everyone at Amarillo College to work together to insure that we help all of our students stay in school and succeed and to ultimately receive either an associate degree or program certificate. Evidence shows that our students need much more than just funding for tuition and books in order to accomplish this task. Some important components of the program include: •

“No Limits Coaches” will be placed on each campus who will be trained to identify students in need of social services in order to stay in school.

•

A social worker will be added to the staff who will work with students to guide them through the local social services programs. He/she will also work with foundation personnel to provide monetary help when needed. The most common identified needs for assistance include utility bills, transportation, child care and housing.

•

A fund of $20,000 that will be used to help students with emergency needs at the discretion of the AC social worker and foundation personnel.

•

A food pantry was established in February on the Washington Street Campus and during the summer on the West Campus, to provide students in need with non-perishable food and toiletries.

In the six months that the No Excuses Program has been in existence, we have already served more than 600 students!

•

The Amarillo College Foundation Board worked all year under the tireless leadership of former Amarillo College President and former board member Bud Joyner to update the ACF Strategic Plan. This plan will be our guide as the Foundation moves forward from 2012 through 2015. The final plan was unveiled at the Board’s annual retreat held in September, 2012. The plan outlined some key goals for the foundation:

•

To increase the donor base to raise more funds to support the mission of ACF, which seeks to promote excellence at AC.

•

To implement appropriate technology to enhance capabilities of the Foundation, its board and staff.

•

To continue to evaluate the governance & administrative structure of the Foundation.

•

To strengthen the effectiveness of the college and foundation partnership.

•

The Foundation gave $10,000 in honor of the Underwood Law Firm, to the AC Honors Program in celebration of the Rudy Giuliani event that Underwood hosted to celebrate its 100th year anniversary. The firm generously donated 10% of the proceeds from the evening to the Amarillo College Foundation Honors Program and allowed Amarillo College students to attend the event free of charge.

•

The 2011-2012 Annual Campaign, chaired by Vice Chairman Mark White, was one of the most successful to date, raising over $797,000 to assist Amarillo College students and programs.

•

The Foundation held several casual mixers to introduce new friends to the work of both the foundation and the importance of Amarillo College within our community.

•

The AC Foundation Board approved an exciting new fundraising initiative, the Bud Joyner Fellows Program, beginning in 2012-2013. A $500 gift allows someone to honor an individual by having them named as a Fellow and having their name placed on a permanent plaque displayed at the College Union Building at Amarillo College.

•

The Foundation purchased new donor software from Ellucian which will improve both the donor records and the scholarship program each year. The foundation staff began the conversion in June 2012, and hopes to have the conversion complete by August of 2013.

•

The Foundation (that means all of you) gave over $530,000 in scholarships for students to attend Amarillo College in 2011-2012. Of that amount, almost $92,000 was used for recruiting area high school students to attend AC. The Foundation manages 464 scholarships that assist over 500 students annually.

Foundation scholarships often literally make the difference between students enrolling in classes or being forced to forego their educational dreams of creating bright futures. Your vital Foundation support allows us to continue our # 1 critical institutional priority of improving student success and completion.

It’s been a good year at Amarillo College! December commencement ceremonies celebrated AC Distinguished Alumnus, Rep. John Smithee, addressed our graduates and their families at the Cal Farley Coliseum.

Fall graduates included 105 associate degree nursing students (RNs) and 41 LVN students, many of whom are now practicing s, and many other healthcare professionals.

Forty percent of our students come to us to learn a skill so they can get a good job, support a family, feel good about themselves, and become productive tax-paying citizens at places like Bell Helicopter, Pantex, area hospitals, and more. The remaining 60 percent of our more than 10,000 students are earning academic credits to transfer to senior institutions like WTAMU, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, UT-Austin, University of North Texas, Texas State University-San Marcos, UT-Arlington, Midwestern State University, and Angelo State University.

This year we broke ground on our new Everett and Mabel McDougal Hinkson Memorial Campus in Hereford and a new Career and Technical Center at our Moore County Campus in Dumas. We received a $1 million Economic Development Administration grant to purchase new equipment for the Hinkson Memorial Campus to train students in high-demand jobs.

Amarillo Economic Development Corporation. Dean Wilkinson has led our technical faculty on the East Campus to create new curricula for students to meet job needs through industry partnerships. AC regents this year approved an agreement with PRANA, an Amarillo economic development organization, to purchase land on our East Campus in order to recruit new manufacturing businesses to our community. AC’s role will be to train workers for these new businesses – a win-win for Amarillo and for AC. A busy and productive year at AC? Yes, to be sure, but it’s important for you to know that so many of our students would not be able to take advantage of these learning and training opportunities without the marvelous support from our generous friends at the Amarillo College Foundation.

Lifetime Philanthropists The Amarillo College Board of Regents in 1961 believed a foundation would benefit the college, its students, faculty and programs. On January 23, 1962, Regents adopted the Articles of Incorporation of the Amarillo College Foundation, Inc. President A. B. Martin announced the first gift of $2,500 from Scott Lumber Company to be used as a faculty emergency loan fund. Those who have made cumulative gifts of $2,500 or more become Lifetime philanthropists, one of the highest forms of recognition Amarillo College and The Amarillo College Foundation can bestow. “It’s not just about tuition and fees,” she said. “You have to buy books and software, maybe even a laptop.

I had to pay placement-testing fees even before I took my first class.”

Mikhaela is an excellent student whose academic standing helped her land some of the scholarships that have come her way. That, in turn, has enabled this product of homeschooling to spend less time working and more time studying. And that has helped her become an AC Honors student.

The trouble is, Mikhaela is the third of eight children in the Sample household. She has known all along she would be responsible for the bulk of her own higher education.

She will receive her associate degree in general studies this May and has been offered a full ride to the University of Texas-Arlington next fall. She plans to pursue both bachelor and master’s degrees in civil engineering and architecture.

“Having a big family is a lot of fun, but my parents can’t afford to send us all to college,” Mikhaela said. “That’s why scholarships are so important. They make it possible to attend college without taking out loans and going into huge debt.”

Mikhaela is the third of the Sample kids to attend AC, but she will not be the last.

“I have a sister coming here next fall,” she said. “It’s what we do.”

Mikhaela, who is president of the Student Government Association (SGA), has earned a number of scholarships from the AC Foundation totaling nearly $4,000 while attending AC. She has received assistance from: Student Government Association Scholarship,The Amarillo College Honors Scholarship, The Stanley & Wendy Marsh 3 Scholarship, the Don Powell Honors Scholarship and the Imogene & Walter DeVaney Scholarship.

Mario Villareal: Working Toward a Degree in Engineering

It didn’t take long before Mario Villareal decided that working full time as a prison guard was not what he wanted to do forever. What he really wanted to do was become an engineer.

Since then, Mario, who is the youngest of seven children, has been able to work fewer hours in retail and study all the more.

“Those 30 hours a week really ate into my performance as a full-time student,” Mario said. “The scholarships helped me not only pay for tuition and books, but now I can work 15 or 20 hours a week and focus more on school.”

So Mario gave up his job at the prison, took a 30-hour-a-week job in retail and enrolled at AC, where he even got himself elected to Student Government.

That additional focus appears as if it will pay dividends;

But his new path was not without challenges. Mario had made too much money at the prison to qualify immediately

“I have a couple semesters to go at AC,” he said. “I have a lot to learn, and Student Government keeps me busy. I’m so happy I decided to give AC a try.”
