Dear reader, We are more than happy to announce our ten-year anniversary, which – to us – is not only a reason to celebrate, but an opportunity to take a look at the future of AMANDLA. A lot has happened since our last annual report: The world has grown closer not only because of the migration movement , but also due to increased public awareness of the power of ‘football-for-good’ initiatives to expand global equal opportunity. More than ever, we are convinced that innovative concepts like AMANDLA and the Safe-Hub are needed to meet and respond to global challenges with a holistic and constructive approach. To address the complex issues that plague communities worldwide, we use the meaningful potential football offers to young people and develop tailored support programs for local communities in cooperation with our resident partners.

Not only did we expand, evaluate and refine our work at the existing Safe-Hubs in the past three years, but we were able to set another major project into motion: The first Safe-Hub outside of South Africa will be built in the Wedding district of Berlin by 2021. After the successes in Khayelitsha, GugulethuManenberg and Diepsloot, we envision our model expanding around the world, helping children and adolescents to reach their full potential.

The following pages will tell our story since our last annual report: from Letlhogonolo, a PlayMaker in Diepsloot, to our impact in the neighbourhoods surrounding the Safe-Hubs, to our vision of a world in which everyone has the same opportunities. We are proud of what we have achieved and look to the future with great confidence and ambition.

OUR STORY

AMANDLA began in 2007 with a handful of volunteers running one project in Khayelitsha. Today, we are a growing team with over 100 staff in South Africa and Germany. We’ve come a long way in 11 years.

AMANDLA has evolved into a social business with a global vision, SAFE-HUB has emerged as our signature platform for social change, and the newly launched teamAMANDLA is our campaign to engage people everywhere as leaders of social progress.

We have always been driven by one goal: to create space for young people to develop and realise their potential. Since 2007, we’ve created that space in different ways: through programmes and partnerships, advocacy and community engagement.

Our award-winning SAFE-HUB model is our proudest achievement to date. It represents the world we want to create: a world where young people have all the tools and support they need to achieve their life goals. We currently operate 3 SAFE-HUBS in South Africa and 1 in Germany, with plans to roll out additional SAFE-HUBS.

The world we envision values social progress over profit. In pursuit of that vision, we decided to refine AMANDLA’s mission and evolve into a social business. Our new focus is to collaborate across sectors to explore and design game-changing, scalable business solutions that drive progress for young people. We know that businesses can do well while doing good, and we’re committed to realizing the promise of social business for youth worldwide.

Through teamAMANDLA, we want to spread the message that everyone – no matter their circumstance – has the power to be a positive force and take action that improves the lives of others. If we work together as one team, we can transform the world.

To mark this new direction for AMANDLA, we’ve updated our logo. As we look forward, we stay connected to our history: the 6 lines represent the values that guide everything we do; and the fist stands for AMANDLA, our movement to create social impact.

OUR VALUES Our values are the foundation of AMANDLA. We base our success on the translation of these values into the behaviour of all team members in order to ensure that participant experience is consistently amazing.

Play-based learning: From age 5 to 10, children learn through play. The Get in the Game! Curriculum enables learning through structured play in a constructive and collaborative environment that promotes an early start to healthy child development.

Life-Skills: From age 11 to 16, girls and boys develop life-skills. The Go For It! Curriculum is focused on learning through team-based football in a competitive environment. Teamwork and resilience principles promote each participant’s commitment to their team and their self.

Employment, Training & Education: From age 17 and up, young people make plans for their future. The Make Your Play! Curriculum shares practical skills and helps young people become employable young adults who contribute positively to society.

INDIVIDUAL & COMMUNITY CHANGE The family, peer group, school and community environments that Safe-Hub participants grow up in are often chaotic and destructive. By providing a safe space, access to life-skills workshops and positive adult role models, we have seen an increase in participants’ resilience, improved decisionmaking ability and other valuable life-skills.

PREVENTING VIOLENCE AND CRIME One of the long-term outcomes we work towards is the reduction of violence, crime and other kinds of anti-social behaviour in areas surrounding our Safe-Hubs. This graph contains localized crime statistics from the South African Police Service. In the most recent data assessed, we continue to see a significant reduction in contact crime in the Safe-Hub catchment area. This is in stark contrast to the trend in the rest of the area.

PROGRAMME ATTENDANCE We believe that regular, consistent and sustained participation of learners in Safe-Hub programmes will enable participants to make better life choices, improve their education results, and reduce risky behaviour. We capture participants’ attendance through a biometric fingerprint system. These are the statistics:

HIGHLIGHTS & STORIES In 2015, the CTC Ten Safe-Hub began its evolution into the second phase of our award-winning SafeHub Model, what we call Model 2.0. This upgrade was continued in 2016, with the construction of new infrastructure, including a new fence for increased security, additional storage space for programme supplies, and a collaborative workspace for staff. In 2017, the Safe-Hub adopted a specific focus on increasing girls’ participation through targeted recruitment, community engagement and the launch of a new girls’ programme called Girls Inc. As a result of these efforts, girls’ participation nearly doubled in 2017.

“When Abby joined our Khayelitsha Safe-Hub 4 years ago, she was just 9-years-old, but already showed signs of being a natural leader. Her coach says that Abby has gained focus in her studies and positively channels her energy and love for football by setting a great example for her fellow teammates. Abby’s team, Shining Stars, is one of the most dedicated, with the highest attendance and most long-term participants. In 2017, Team Shining Stars won their League with the most combined goals and Fair Play points of all the girls’ teams.”

Construction of the Oliver Kahn Safe-Hub was officially completed in 2015. Programmes were rolled out for all ages at the first Model 2.0 Safe-Hub built from scratch, which includes a state of the art football pitch and multi-use community and education centre. In 2016, we kicked off our first collective impact project in partnership with two local organisations, Fight for Peace and Ikamva Youth. Thanks to after-school tutoring program Ikamva Youth, we saw vastly improved matric results at the Safe-Hub’s neighboring school. In 2017, we acted as a pilot site for the After School Game Changer Project, a provincial government programme that’s testing collaborative approaches to after-school activities that range from aerobics to drama classes.

“Luvuyo began his one-year learnership as a PlayMaker in 2017. After showing promising initiative and leadership through his involvement with our Night League and Youth Café activities, Luvuyo was offered a Programme Officer position. He says his favourite part of his job is leading the Night League as head recruiter, organiser and facilitator of matches, and data collector. “All the hard work is worth is because it gives young men the opportunities to play football to avoid drugs, gangs and other potential dangers that exist in the community,” says Luvuyo.

2016 was a milestone for Safe-Hub in South Africa. The first Safe-Hub in Gauteng Province officially opened with the launch of programming in Diepsloot. The site’s new football field will soon be joined by a community and education centre. In 2017, we saw fantastic result from our PlayMaker programme in Diepsloot. After just one year of mentorship and capacity-building, a PlayMaker participant was hired as a full time Programme Officer.

“When Letlhogonolo applied to become a PlayMaker at our newly-opened Safe-Hub in Diepsloot, she was motivated by her love of sports. She wasn’t expecting her experience to have the impact that it has: “AMANDLA has made me see life differently as I no longer see soccer as a sport, but as a factor that brings together different people. Now, I see myself as a coach and a good role model that has positively made an impact on children’s lives.”

The first Safe-Hub outside South Africa is in development will be completed by 2021. Located in BerlinWedding, an area where young people face considerable challenges, the Safe-Hub will offer access to lifeskills and football-based learning programmes that are being adapted to meet the needs of local youth in this unique environment. We have already started rolling out our EduFootball programme through trainthe-trainer workshops and will continue evolving our programmes with feedback from coaches.
