Hello May Ah summer is here. Ok, technically it’s still spring but I love the hot weather, the higher the thermostat the better for me. Summer lifts our spirits and gets us moving more. We can swim in the sea finally!

The sunshine has a direct impact on our happiness, it creates those endorphins in our brain to make us feel good, sing and dance. Talking of which I have met some great people recently. Check out the interview with our fantastic cover model, Christian Wasilewski I attended his dance aerobics class at Body Control in Larnaca and I was hooked. And of course being a regular at Pirates in Ayia Napa I had to chat to MC

Stan who raises the roof with the crowds every week. I love meeting inspirational, creative people every month, it’s my job but it doesn’t feel like it. And that gives me plenty to smile about when you’re loving your lifestyle. I recently met up with one of my regular advertisers, Elias from Economou Hearing, ( check out his details on the back cover) . As it’s my two year anniversary of moving here permanently this month, he asked me how I was finding it and I told him I loved it. He replied, “We love having you here.” And that is just one of

many reasons I love living here. Thank you everyone for making me feel so welcome on your gorgeous island Have a marvellous May and see you on the beach!

PERFORMER

Lifestyle chats to dancer Christian Wasilewski Tell me, when did you come to Cyprus and why did you choose to settle here? My adventure with Cyprus started three years ago and it is still continuing, it was a coincidence. My family and I were in the mood to move abroad and I love to re-invent myself. Life is a journey, life is an adventure and let’s give Cyprus a try, that was our mantra. So there was no particular reason why we chose Cyprus, no concrete plan it just happened. It was like a blind date and we fell in love. For sure it is the weather and the sea that I adore, but the people have stolen my heart. They are welcoming, friendly, and talkative and the best thing about this small island is that you can find people from every nation and I find this very inspiring. It is like a celebration of diversity. Tell us about your dancing experience - you’re amazing by the way? Uuuhhh I`m

flattered, thanks hun. I studied Musical- and Jazzdance at the Theatre University of Amsterdam. I did HipHop, Jazz Dance, Ballet, and Contemporary Dance. Afterwards, I toured as a Backgrounddancer with various Pop Artists across Europe. I danced in Musicals like Hair and Maria Stuart and after some years on the theatre stage, I moved backstage and worked as a choreographer and director, which I loved to do. This process of creating and rehearsing a play is one of the most exciting feelings for me. But through all the projects that I had done during my life, I always was teaching dance classes for professionals and non-professionals dancers in Jazz- and Commercial dance. And there is nothing better than an exhausting, sexy, sweating class. What influenced you in performing? I am a MTVTheatre-Bitch.

Just remembered I was a latchkey kid. So when I returned from school the first thing I did was turn on MTV and I was obsessed with the live performances. I guess I was raised by Madonna and Britney Spears, lol, and I am still watching their famous MTV Music Award kissing performance. Still obsessed with it. Everyone was shocked because of their kiss. I love that. And this is what a good performance should do. The audience should remember it. Keep it real, vulnerable, and surprising and it should always tell a story or a message, and the audience should always be touched by it. What kind of dance do you prefer? Actually, I don’t have a favourite one, because I did everything from Tap Dance, Ballet to Pole

Dance, and I encourage every dancer, and artist to take something from every style and create their own style and so I do. We have such a short life and we have to try out everything and put our own spice into it. And there is beauty and fun in everything. Tell us about your style as an aerobics instructor? Me as an Aerobic instructor? That sounds so ‘80s and I like it. So this is my newest project to bring the 305 Fitness classes from New York to Cyprus. Honestly, I am very proud of it that I am the first one who is teaching this sexy workout in Cyprus. So as Cindy is singing “Girls just wanna have fun” this is the mantra of my classes. We dance, we sweat but we do not count calories we just burn them. I am creating a safe place, where we have no pressure just a good time. Everyone is welcomed no dance experience is required. There are no wrong moves only lit music. The minute that my clients enter the door I

want them to feel sexy, accept their bodies, and leave the class with a hyped, good feeling. As a creative performer, what inspires you? Humoru, sassiness, wine and good chats. Do you have any unfulfilled ambitions? Sure I have and I hope I will always have them because without dreams life would be boring for me. When I will turn 100 I will start to relax and just enjoy. Yes, I am a driven person.

choreographies. So I can’t choose only one, the variety is too big. But I am a huge fan of Bob Fosse’s work. His musicality is amazing and his choreographies are luscious. He choreographed

But I never plan far ahead so I will always be open to new things. For now, I have two ambitions. To open five 305 Fitness classes per week and I would love to create a Drag Show. And I would love to have my own Space in the future, but it is a long way to go. Okay three :-) What’s your favourite musical? This is not fair. There are too many good ones. Some I love because of their good plots, others have incredible songs and some others have magnificent

@chrizzdancer Musicals like Cabaret and Chicago and they are seductive. Do you express yourself through music or fashion or dance or everything? Sure I do. I am obsessed with art in general. It makes our lives colorful. I am not crazy about trends but celebrate always creativity. Describe your style? Classy with a little bit of too much and sometimes over the top.

HEARING

Can treating hearing loss reduce stress? Stress has overall detrimental effects on your body and can contribute to serious health concerns like hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Some tips to decrease stress are exercising more regularly, spending time with friends and family, getting enough sleep and, in some cases, treating your hearing loss. People with hearing loss often experience a daily stressor related to their hearing loss called listening fatigue. This is when you must concentrate on speech, lipreading, or social cues constantly throughout your day to the point that you are physically exhausted. Listening fatigue is common among children and adults with hearing loss and can be reduced by using hearing aids. 14

Tinnitus, too, can cause stress We also know that tinnitus — often a symptom of underlying hearing loss — is linked to stress. People suffering from tinnitus, also known as “ringing in the ears”, may report an increase in their tinnitus when they are in a higher state of stress. A study showed that 53.6 percent of the people with tinnitus who were polled reported their tinnitus began during a stressful experience in their life, while 52.8 percent reported their tinnitus increased during a stressful period. The good news is, another study found that hearing professionals reported about 60 percent of their patients experience

with Economou Hearing minor to major relief from their tinnitus when wearing hearing aids, while one in five received major relief. We live in a world full of stressors, so take the time during MAYBetter Hearing Month to decompress, relax, and seek treatment from a hearing care professional for your hearing loss or tinnitus. To experience how far hearing aids have come and what they can do for you, simply call at 77772627 and book a free hearing appointment with one of our hearing healthcare professionals in your area who can test your hearing and consult with you about treatment options available.

HEALTH NEWS

Cyprus is lagging behind the rest of Europe when it comes to innovative medical supplies and treatments according to a recent report. The European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) conducted a survey on patient accessibility to innovative medicines across 39 countries in Europe. IInnovative medicines are those given to patients for conditions that do not already have satisfactory treatment available in the market. Results show Cyprus ranked 23rd among 39 countries with just 45 out of a total of 160 innovative medicines approved and available to the public. The average among the 39 countries is 74 out of 160 medicinal products being available, that is 46%.

16

Cyprus ranked lowest among all participating countries for overall ease of availability, as out of the total of 160 medicines, only 1% is fully available to the public; 6% is only available privately; 9% is not available; and 28% is under limited

availability. For the remaining 56% Cyprus did not complete a full dataset and therefore availability is unknown. The proportion of medicines available to patients without restriction was also problematic as according to the survey, in Cyprus, only 2% of the 45 products were fully publicly available, with the remaining 98 per cent subject to restrictions.

ENTERTAINMENT

As the season’s celebrations get underway, Lifestyle chats to MC Stan, who raises the roof each week at Pirates dance bar in Ayia Napa alongside his radio show in Limassol How do you become an MC? Very good

question. To become an MC you just have to be a massive music lover . Is all about your personality and your social skills! You don’t need no qualifications because is a learning process so the more you get into it and keep on practising the more experience you gain because every gig and every new club or venues you work you learn something different which basically helps you build and become stronger.

How do you keep the crowd upbeat?

18

My crowd is always my priority. I always want to know my crowd get familiar with them get their attention and then they are mine! I love interacting with the crowd and always try to gets them involved in all ways and when that happen then we wild buzzing.

Can you share you funniest experience that you’ve had in a club (or embarrassing? Just tell me funny anecdote)

The most funniest moment I ever had in a club for me was once I went to a club went on stage so as I was on the stage the bouncer came rite up to me tells me to get out of the stage because is only for the lady or for the MC and I was like I am the MC and he couldn’t believe it so he had to go and ask the promoters to confirm it. It was very embarrassing but to me was very funny.

What personality traits do you need in your role? To be an MC you

need to charismatic with a positive energy, sociably active and fun.

Is there a specific genre of music you love or do you like everything?

I listen to all type of music genre I listen to everything depending on my mood but I love RnB rap music is just my type.

How many hours a day do you spend listening to music? I

can listen to music all day all night. I just love music

Do you think the clubbing scene changed since the pandemic? In my

point of view, definitely

the pandemic totally changed the clubbing scene. Almost everyone knows that the Covid-19 pandemic has devastated the nightlife

to the inability to handle all this Covid-19 pressure and it’s just sad.

What’s your prediction for the 2022 season?

I think 2022 season is going to be much more better than last season because lots of bans have been lifted no curfews no discrimination

better so we all can enjoy our summer.

What music excites you? Old Skool RnB

HipHop definitely.

Tell us about your radio station? So I

host my own radio show on Choice Fm which is based in Limassol. I have got all sort of listeners of different ages and mainly my listeners are RnB lovers because that is what the ahow is all about.

What do you love about Cyprus? I love

everything about Cyrus! First of all awesome weather and am sure everybody knows about that haha. Basically I grew up here got my whole family here as well so yeah I love it. What makes you happy? My Family and Good Friends around me.

industry with social distancing, lock downs, mask-wearing and early curfews. Loads of venues are shutting down due

GIN

Old Tom Cats ‘n’ Gin Amongst the many types of gin currently being drunk today, lies Old Tom. There are many explanations for the name but the name probably comes from the wooden ‘Tom Cat’ plaques that used to hang outside public houses and drink houses in 18th Century England. As the government tried to control the excessive flow of gin with strict licensing and high taxes, pubs tried their best ways to avoid them, and there was often a slot under the cat’s paw, to put money in, and as the customer cupped his mouth over the paws, a leadtube would then spout a measure of gin. This old-timey ‘mother’s ruin’, known for its sweeter side, dates to the beginning of the 1800s, when gin drinking and making was rampant in England. There are no real rules to its making although it must include juniper, like any other gin. However, Old Tom gin can be aged—or not. It can have added sugar—or not. And it can use a neutral base spirit—or not. What is understood is that the distilled result

falls somewhere between a malt-heavy sweet genever and today’s London dry gin. Inspired by the botanical rich and lightly sweetened Old Tom Gins of yesteryear, the House of Botanicals Classic Old Tom Gin was the first spirit from The HoB brand. The gin is sourced from a base gin produced in London; a subtle reference to the history of Old Tom Gin. Its base is a British grain spirit with juniper berries, angelica root, orris root, coriander seed, cassia bark, almond, orange peel and lemon peel creating a truly outstanding dry gin in its own right; rich in piney juniper, citrus and elegant spice. To create the Old Tom style, the gin is then shipped to The House of Botanicals in Aberdeen and macerated with delicate Moroccan saffron and chamomile flowers, as well as a hint of muscovado sugar, before bottling at 47% abv. This is a mighty powerful gin. It has a lovely golden yellow hue, with complex and lengthy aroma notes. Gentle floral, fruity and

Email: theginnolier@gmail.com

Stanna Wieclawska Kyriakou

earthy aromas combine well, with spice and juniper also making their presence known. These last two also continue to shine alongside the warm piney flavour notes. Coriander and chamomile follow, culminating in lingering sweet sugared citrus peels. This is long on the palate and fragrant. House of Botanicals Classic Old Tom is a really pleasant gin, mouth watering, with an unmistakable Old Tom sweetness and a little warmth at the end. Personally, I like it with ginger ale but a simple dry tonic also lets this gin shine. A Tom Collins or Martinez would work well as a cocktail. This has appeal to those who do lean towards fruitier sweet gins whilst still being a solid option for those who like classic gins. It’s available as a classic version, a maple and seasonal raspberry.

AUTHOR

Lifestyle chats to best selling author, AnnaMaria Athanasiou The romantic novelist has written 8 books and sold tens of thousands of copies and writes from her home in Nicosia.

A

nna Maria wrote her first books, The Waiting for Summer novels in secret, firstly because she never thought she’d finish them and secondly, it was a completely new territory for her. Throughout her life Anna-Maria had regularly created scenarios and stories in her head, thinking that one day she would finally put them down on paper. Eventually, in the September of 2011 she took the plunge and started to write down an idea that she'd been creating for almost ten years. Waiting for Summer books one and two are the result of her small idea, and she finally had them published in September 2013 and June 2014. The love story and her characters, Sylvie and Nick, captured the hearts and enthusiasm

22

of her readers, spurring Anna-Maria to carry on with her writing. Anna lives with her husband, two sons, a golden retriever and seven cats, and has penchant for cake, tea, whisky, wine and a healthy obsession with shoes. Anna-Maria loves the fantasy land of romantic fiction, and is passionate about bringing her sexy stories and characters to life. She said, “When I finished my first book my brother sent it off to a publisher and they accepted me straight away, I never thought in a million years it would be published but here I am, eight books later. It was surreal when the books arrived at the house I opened them and when I saw my words published I burst into tears.

It takes me a long time to write my latest series took 18 months to write, I let the character grow in my head and then the idea is in my head and finishes in my head before I start writing. The characters to me are real and I pick up their idiosyncrasies . I will never retire from writing because I love writing, but when I do write, it has to be in complete silence, which was quite difficult during lockdown when everyone was at home all the time. But I am pretty disciplined." Anna-Maria has since been asked to collaborate with other authors on four charity anthologies and is an Inspirational Global Woman Nominee. https://www.amazon. com/Anna-MariaAthanasiou/e/

n most mythologies, it is believed that the colour green is added to life, when there is a need for new state of balance, change or growth, to pursue new opportunities, or to protect oneself from fears and anxieties of life. In Psychology, it is proven that colours could evoke certain physical and psychological responses in the human body. The study often considers colours to

be mostly associated with emotional effects as against scientific results. In medical purposes, the colour green is often used to indicate safety in the advertising of drugs and medical products. In treatment spaces, green is the most restful and relaxing colour to the eye optically because of its spectral wavelength. In colour therapy, the conscious and subconscious

meanings of Green create calmness. It generally relaxes and soothes both mentally and physically. Green can help lift depression and reduce anxiety. Green is soothing, relaxing, and youthful – and is believed to help alleviate anxiety, depression, and nervousness. In medical spaces, green colour is considered to bring out a sense of hope, health, adventure, renewal, self-control, compassion, and harmony. Moreover, since Green is directly related to nature it is most commonly used to represent and promote ‘natural’ or ‘green’ products. GARDEN

Fairy Gardens Are Trending - here’s how to create your own

M

aybe it’s the childlike nature coming out in gardeners, but whatever the reason, fairy gardens are becoming one of the hottest horticultural trends this year. Fairy gardens are decorative miniature gardens constructed of small plants and accessories. They provide children and adults alike with an enchanting space to develop their creativity and imagination. Fairy gardens are designed to lure fairies and good luck into your home. They can be placed on your porch, deck, garden or garden areas alongside actual living plants, or they can be grown in a container or other small space intended for indoors. DIY fairy gardens make a fun sensory play area for kids, and offer a great way to teach your children about the basics of gardening and plant care. You can customise your space using scaled-down versions of everyday items, from tiny furniture to cars, houses and more. When you are preparing to create your own miniature whimsical world, you have a few things that you will need to consider. Finding the perfect location is important, you’ll be messing with soil, plants and positioning accessories and figurines. You’ll need to find a spot that is easily reachable, out of the way of pets and slightly sheltered from heavy rainfall and wind. stones or pebbles to enable water to drain out. Plants are the next thing you want to consider. Pansies, daphne, cyclamen and violas are all beautiful plants that will add a touch of colour to your space and will bloom even in the dead of winter. Fill your container with sand or soil, and top with pine cones, sticks and stones to add texture and detail to your miniature garden. Growing or adding moss is a lovely way to add extra character to your fairy garden, and it resembles grass for the fairies. Once you’ve figured out which plants to put in your fairy garden, it is time to decide on accessories and figurines.

Miniature accessories and figurines - such as toy fairies and gnomes

Battery-powered lights (preferably water-proof)

Stones, pebbles, wood, pine cones, moss etc.

Adding decorative rocks will be a great addition to your fairy garden. You can use pebbles and rocks to create stepping stones, pathways and more.

Start with a container you have on hand already. This can be anything from a wheelbarrow to a teapot, a planter, or a decorative basket and more. A container isn’t required, but a great place to start and provide the foundation for your space.

Miniature models are one of the most distinguished accessories for your fairy garden. You can use these accessories and figurines to replicate a theme and layout you desire. There are miniature houses, cars, trees, animals and people.

Whatever container you choose to use, you’ll need to line the bottom with a mixture of large and medium

LIFESTYLE

NOTES AND REFLECTIONS OF A WOMAN CREATING HER BEST LIFE Stefania Bongiovanni Hi there, how are you? On a scale from 1 to 10, how happy are you that the cold days are over? Of course “10!” is the only accepted answer here ;-) So, welcome to our long sunny season and to the beach-time, which however also brings – this is especially for the ladies – some “performance anxiety” because we are not happy with the image we see reflected in the mirror... The extra kilos earned during the winter, the stretch marks, the cellulite, the effects of aging... all these contribute to making us feel insecure and never ready for the bikini challenge. So it’s time to talk about BODY POSITIVITY. Body Positivity is a growing movement created to highlight unconventional bodies, usually not complying with society’s beauty standards and with the distorted image of perfection spread by the medias. It implies no

judgement and no shaming, and it promotes the celebration of everyone’s uniqueness. This movement has been gaining more and more ground, turning upside down the power of haters on social medias, their favourite battle field for body shaming. Thanks to an increasing number of plus size models, influencers and body positivity ambassadors worldwide, a powerful message is coming through: we have to normalize bodies regardless of age, size, shape and disabilities, and start feeling comfortable with our bodies. As always, self-love and selfesteem are the keys. I know, I know, it’s easier said than done... but the good news is that you don’t have to do all the hard work alone. Surround yourself with likeminded people who really care about you: they will only see the beauty in you.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and this is the second good news. There’s nothing more personal than the aesthetic sense. Last but not least: their perception of you is a reflection of them, so don’t let their insecurities and frustrations affect you, because, at the end of the day, what they think of you is none of your business. And now, gorgeous, just go out there and start living your best life!

Who am I? I’m an Italian living in Cyprus and loving it crazily. My name is Stefania Bongiovanni, some of you will know me as the founder of The Girlfriends’ Circle, but as well as the woman who believes in #sisterhood and in #womensupportwomen. 29

R

ecently, I was fortunate to attend an acoustic performance by Greek artist NOMIK (real name KIMON in reverse). I have met the singer from Thessaloniki, Greece several times and its always a pleasure to be part of his audience. He has a magnetism that draws you towards him and has you transfixed while he performs. I contacted NOMIK and told him that we would be attending his soiree and he was surprised to actually see us there. This man is welcomely humble and super talented at the same time. What I experienced was a night of acoustic pleasure, beginning with original pieces in Greek and English, to loved covers with his personal touch to self-written soul baring poetry. His voice glides from Greek to English naturally with his English singing sounding like that of Brian Molko of Placebo.

NOMIK is a multi-talented artist – a man of many faces and multiple projects. He is a singer, songwriter, musician, composer and poet and his strong and personal beliefs and emotions are reflected in his songs and poetry. A realist, a romanticist, charismatic and magnetic…. describing himself as ‘a soldier of art.’ NOMIK is formerly the frontman of alternative electronic band UNIVERSAL TRILOGY and presently frontman of psychedelic rock band SLEEPIN’ PILLOW and SEAHORSE. Parallel to this, is his solo career which saw his English album titled ‘I ain’t gonna be a King’ released in 2017. An interesting and masterpiece of modern song writing, focusing on different perspectives of women. It has a psychedelic, dreamy and folk feel to it which puts you on a rollercoaster of emotions. I get the feeling of a John Lennon

His most recent solo project, is his first Greek language album released earlier this year, titled ‘Happy Faces’. A Greek folk album for the romantic and the dreamers. In addition, and keeping this artist busy and consumed in his art, are two published collections of poems, The Return of Succession and Sewerage – writings born from his personal experiences and revealing an insight into his artistically creative mind. Each piece telling a story of love, feelings, and reflectiveness. NOMIK contributes to the Greek music scene in many different aspects, whether singing in English or Greek and is well respected and admired for his work. He has collaborated on stage with many well-known Greek artists during his career and performed at some of Greece’s biggest festivals but thankfully, always finds time to visit his friends here on the island. “…art is a whole universe….a total chaos….smart people can make me laugh……good people can make me cry.” NOMIK.
