Founded In: 1884 Population: 8,647 (2000 census) Elevation: 6,237 ft. Median Income: $81,000 Visitors often wonder about the difference between Jackson, Wyoming and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Jackson Hole refers to a 48-mile long valley surrounded by high mountains and includes the towns of Jackson, Kelly, Moose, Moran, Wilson and Teton Village. The town of Jackson offers countless opportunities for shopping, dining, and nightlife along with multiple Jackson Hole hotel and lodging options. The heart of the town of Jackson is the town square with its antler arch entrance. Every summer, the Town Square is home to the world’s longest running shoot-out. During the winter, the Town Square becomes a winter wonderland with lights in the trees and on the antler arch entrance. Jackson Hole was originally populated by Native American tribes including the Shoshoni, Crow, Blackfeet, Bannock, and Gros Ventre. John Colter entered Jackson Hole during the winter of 1807/1808 during the return journey of the Lewis & Clark expedition. The area became a prime area for trappers and many famous mountain men traveled through the area in the early 1800’s. These mountain men are responsible for many of the names in the valley including Bridger, Jedediah Smith, and Sublette. David Jackson gave his name to the valley after a winter spent on the shores of Jackson Lake. As part of the Hayden Expedition of 1871 and 1872, William Henry Jackson took the first photographs of the Teton Mountains and Yellowstone. His photographs, along with the sketches by Tom Moran, were important evidence to convince Congress to protect Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone National Park became the first National Park in 1872. Grand Teton National Park was created in 1920 and greatly expanded in 1950 through the generous efforts of John D. Rockefeller, who purchased and then donated over 30,000 acres. The Town of Jackson was named in 1894. Some of the early buildings remain and can be found throughout the area of the Town Square. The Town of Jackson elected the first all-woman city council in 1920. Recreation and Tourism Jackson is a major gateway for millions of tourists visit-


ing nearby Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone National Park, and the National Elk Refuge. Jackson is also in close proximity to several ski resorts. Directly southeast of town, there is a small but challenging area known as Snow King, Jackson’s original ski hill. It has steep vertical slopes and is night-lit. More famous is the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, 12 miles (19 km) northwest. Opened in 1966, it is has abundant steep terrain and has one of the highest vertical drops on the continent, at 4139 feet (1262 m). With an average annual snowfall of 450 inches, the powder is usually deep with minimal lift lines-except for the busy holidays. First opened in 1965, the Mountain Resort has become one of the most renowned ski areas in Wyoming and the Western United States. With more than 2,500 acres of terrain spread over two adjacent mountains, the Resort boasts runs that exceed four miles and offers 24 miles of groomed trails. The only way to the summit of 10,450-foot Rendezvous Mountain is aboard one of two 63-passenger Aerial Tram cars. Wildlife Abound Those familiar with Jackson Hole’s history know that wildlife has played a crucial role in the region’s development. The same wildlife that led trappers to discover the magnificent Teton Mountains and Jackson Hole in the 1800s is still abundant. In fact, Jackson Hole is known to harbor over sixty species of mammals, 100 species of birds, and a half dozen game fish. Visitors can learn more about these intriguing species with the center’s free wildlife exhibits and theater. In addition, the visitor center boasts views of the world-famous elk refuge with spotting scopes and binoculars, and wildlife and wetland viewing decks are available. Founded In: 1904 Population: 1,846 Elevation: 7,176 ft. Median Income: $40,200 Pinedale is the largest town in Sublette County and it is also the county seat. This small mountain-country town is nestled on the western flank of the Wind River Mountain Range. Many of the homes in and around Pinedale are constructed with native pine logs. Pinedale has a wide variety of lodging and dining options for the traveler as well as small town shopping for the residents residing in and around the area. Pinedale is located in western Wyoming approximately 78 miles south of Jackson Hole and 100 miles north of Rock Springs along Highway 191. Average summer temperatures range in the 70s and 80s with winter hovering around 15 degrees. Twelve-mile-long Fremont Lake, just three miles from town, provides the town’s water and recreation opportunities including sailing regattas to ice fishing derbies with towering peaks in the background. The Museum of the Mountain Man on the hill above town offers a fascinating look into the lives of Sublette County’s early explorers as well as the adventure of the fur trade era. Beyond the Museum and only 3 miles from town, Fremont Lake dominates the landscape. This 12 mile long natural lake reaches back into the Wind River Range, giving boaters a playground with an amazing backdrop. Boat ramps, a picnic beach, a marina with lodging and restaurant, and a Forest Service campground are located here. Both Fremont and nearby Half Moon Lake offer easily accessible fishing in summer and winter. The Big Fish Winter Derby is held the first weekend in March each year, bringing crazy cold-resistant anglers from surrounding states to vie for purse and glory. Every visitor to Pinedale is encouraged to take an hour and head up the hill along Skyline Drive. Views down over the lakes and clear over to the Wyoming Range make this 17 mile paved road a favorite. The route ends at the


Elkhart Park trailhead and parking lot. This is the most popular jumping off point for backpacking and hiking into the Winds. Photographers Point is a favorite day hike destination; just a 4 hour round trip. Also along the drive, White Pine Ski Area and Resort offers summer and winter activities for the whole family. Mountain biking, chairlift rides and a children’s day camp fill the summer roster, along with great food and lodging. Winter brings uncrowded runs, lessons, groomed cross country trails, and even a New Year’s torchlight parade. The Green River Lakes/Cora Road (Hwy 352) leads to all kinds of adventure, from great fishing along the historic Green River to guest ranches and wildlife viewing opportunities. A wonderful day trip is to drive over Union Pass, the only road through the Wind River Range, and on to the town of Dubois. This is a Forest Service gravel road and passable from approximately early July through October, weather dependent. Back on the Green River Lakes Road, which turns to gravel at the Forest boundary, you’ll travel past Kendall Warm Springs, home of the Kendall Dace, a tiny fish found only in this remote stream flowing into the Green River. You’ll pass an elk feed ground; in the winter months you can travel here by snowmobile to see hundreds of elk. The road ends at Green River Lakes, a major trailhead and a beautiful foreground for impressive Square Top Mountain in the distance. Campgrounds and dispersed campsites are found all along this drive. Median Income: $48,700 As you approach modern-day Rock Springs, you can almost imagine earlier travelers bouncing along the Overland Stage route toward the welcome stage station which was the beginning of this southwestern Wyoming town. Rock Springs is another of the southern Wyoming towns on the Union Pacific’s transcontinental line. And for years the area provided millions of tons of coal to feed the nation’s locomotives. Today, the Rock Springs area continues to have a leadership role in the nation’s energy production. US Hwy 191 connects at Rock Springs north to serve Grand Teton and Yellowstone National parks. Rock Springs is known as the home of 56 nationalities; a true melting pot. Formed by the railroad and coal mines, Rock Springs offers a variety of recreational opportunities for visitors and residents alike. Established as a mining town, the natural resources around the area are the driving force behind the Rock Springs economy. A variety of recreation facilities are available in the town, including the Paul J. Wataha Recreation Area Complex which hosts an 18 hole championship golf course complete with a driving range, pro shop, and restaurant; four tennis courts, a ball complex with four fields, fishing pond; pavilion and picnic grounds. The city also boasts two multi-purpose indoor recreation facilities, offering everything from aerobics to ice skating, rock climbing to yoga classes. Killpecker Sand Dunes The Killpecker Sand Dunes are the largest active dune field in North America. It is a place of exquisite beauty, of prehistoric and historic importance, of diverse wildlife and extensive oil and gas development. It lies at the western end of a narrow strip of sand stretching 150 miles from the Green River Basin clear past the Great Divide Basin to the East. Close to 109,000 acres, or 55 miles of dunes are active or moving in the brutally dry wind. These dunes are unique to Southwestern Wyoming and contain sites that are culturally, geologically, aesthetically and biologically important. Because of that, about 38,650 acres of the Greater Sand Dunes including Boars Tusk were designated an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) in 1982 to protect wildlife, including a rare desert elk herd, and geologic and cultural resources. The ACEC covers some 38% of the Killpecker dune field. 28

Wild Horse Scenic Loop Tour Wild horses have always been symbols of the West, living examples of a wide-open landscape and an untamed frontier spirit. Horses were first seen in this country about 10,000 years ago, but for unknown reasons became extinct. They were not seen again for another 9,000 years when the Spanish reintroduced them in the 1500’s. Current herds are descendents of those Spanish horses along with animals turned out by ranchers or enticed away from ranches by wild horse herds. Experience the wild horses on the Pilot Butte Wild Horse Scenic Loop Tour. This is a relatively dry area with seemingly little vegetation. However, it is home to a surprising array of wild creatures. These include wild horses, antelope, desert elk, deer, rabbits, coyotes, hawks, eagles and sage grouse, among others. The tour route offers several scenic overlooks of the area’s prominent features, such as Pilot Butte, Boar’s Tusk, Killpecker Sand Dunes, Steamboat Mountain, North and South Table Mountains, Leucite Hills, Aspen Mountain, Wilkins Peak, the Overland Trail and the Union Pacific railroad corridors, the Wyoming, Wind River and Uinta mountain ranges and the cities of Rock Springs and Green River. Most wild horses in Wyoming are located in the southwestern quarter of the state. The Rock Springs BLM is the headquarters of the Wild Horse Program in Wyoming. The appropriate management level for wild horses in Wyoming is approximately 6,000. 2,500 of these horses are in the Rock Springs District. Federal and private lands form a checkerboard pattern in the Rock Springs District. The existence of the herds of wild horses is a credit to the private landowners of this area who do not fence their land, thus allowing the horses to wander as necessary for food, water, and shelter in the winter as nature provides. Founded In: 1868 Population: 12,882 Elevation: 6,109 ft. Median Income: $60,700 Green River was one of the few towns along the Union Pacific which existed before the railroad arrived. It was incorporated in 1868 in what was then the Dakota Territory. The city was the starting point from which John Wesley Powell started his famous expeditions of the Green River, the Colorado River, and the Grand Canyon in the late 1800’s. Native Americans, indigenous animals (antelope, buffalo, deer, etc.), mountain men, pioneers, ranchers, railroad people, and miners have all left their footprints and their legacies in Green River. The Green River, which flows near the present town site, served as a waterway for the “tie hacks” that cut timber in the mountains, floated the logs down, and then shaped them into rail ties at the town of Green River. When the railroad finally arrived, there was a city of 2,000 and an Overland Stage crossing a couple of miles downstream. The railroad is still a major presence today. Mining, particularly of Trona, is the major industry in the area. Trona is the natural ore from which the basic industrial chemical, soda ash, comes. Green River’s soda plants now operate to produce two-thirds of the world’s supply of soda ash. Soda ash is used in the production of glass products, detergents and baking soda. Even with the Interstate, the railroad, and other trappings of modern society, the city continues to sit at the crossroads of the west—a timeless, peaceful place. Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area It was on May 26, 1869 that Major Powell named the Flaming Gorge after he and his men saw the sun reflecting off of the red rocks while floating down the Green River during a daring exploration. Petroglyphs (rock art) and artifacts suggest that Fremont Indians hunted game near Flaming Gorge for many centuries. Later, the Comanche, Shoshoni, and Ute tribes, whose members spread throughout the mountains of present-day Colorado and Utah, visited the Flaming Gorge country. Rising 502 feet above bedrock, Flaming Gorge Dam began impounding waters of the Green River in 1962 creating Flaming Gorge Reservoir, which now extends as far as 91 miles to the north. The reservoir has a total capacity of 3,788,900 acre-feet. At full elevation of 6,045 feet, it has a surface area of 42,020 acres. The reservoir provides varied recreational activities such as power boating, waterskiing, 30

camping, parasailing, rafting, swimming and fishing from boats or shore. The lake is famous for its trophy trout fishing (up to 40 pounds/18kg), and for the beautiful red rock mountains rising around it. Seedskadee Wildlife Refuge Established in 1965 the refuge encompasses more than 26,000 acres along the river between Fontenelle Dam and the Green River. It is a haven to more than 200 species of birds, including all species native to Wyoming. Located 37 miles north of Green River, visitors can find Seedskadee by driving west on I-80 to the LaBarge State Highway 372 North. The turnoff to the headquarters is approximately 28 miles from the LaBarge exit. In addition to providing an opportunity for excellent bird watching, Seedskadee offers world class trout fishing along with waterfowl, upland bird and big game hunting. Native bird species making the refuge home are prairie falcon, peregrine falcon, owls, hawks and Canadian geese. Bald and golden eagles also inhabit the area. Public roads or refuge tour routes provide access to much of the refuge. Except for a small area around the headquarters building, the entire refuge is open for walking with fence walk-over structures positioned at some of the more popular spots. Camping is not allowed on the refuge. Visitors should bring sufficient water, food and fuel. The refuge takes its name from the Shoshone word for the Green River – Seedskee-dee-Agie – meaning the River of the Sage Chicken. Historic sites related to the early ranching and several crossings of the Oregon, Mormon Pioneer, Pony Express and California National Historic Trails can be found within Seedskadee’s boundaries.
