Certified Residential Specialist - CRS Ask-O, Q: What do all the little letters mean behind an agent’s name?

After Returning from the Wyoming State Convention last week I wanted to share a little secret that maybe not everyone out there knows about your Realtor choices. Have you ever noticed some Realtors have some letters after their names on their Business Cards, which probably mean little or nothing to many folks? There is one Realtor Designation that rises above the others, and I think that you can truly see a difference between Realtors who have this designation vs those who don’t. The letters are CRS and they stand for the Council of Residential Specialists. Certified Residential Specialists (CRS) agents have a proven record of success; in fact 3 times the success of none CRS. Statistically these Realtors have done 3 times the number of annual transactions. What does this mean to you? Experience! These agents have been through more deals and they have more experience in how to negotiate the deal and help you accomplish your goals. This isn’t a coincidence! These agents take a higher level of education to receive the certification, besides meeting production requirements before they can even get the designation. One thing I think is interesting is that the CRS classes don’t just teach agents about contracts, or Lead Based Paint concerns and other important issues,they take it a step further and teach Negotiation, Customer Service and other types of skills that other educational courses tend to assume agents know! Once they receive the designation, they have more access and information on cutting edge technology and resources and can use these to provide you a higher level of service. Founded In: 1884 Population: 6,867 (according to 2000 census) Elevation: 5,357 ft. Each year, visitors enjoy world-class high mountain lake fishing, as well as mountain and rock climbing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing and hiking. Sinks Canyon State Park Sinks Canyon State park lies about 7 miles West of Lander on Wyoming Highway 131. South Pass City South Pass City began with a boom in 1867 with the discovery of gold on the southeastern end of the rugged Wind River Mountains. By 1868, Wyoming’s City of Gold boasted over 250 buildings along the banks of Willow Creek and the surrounding hillsides. South Pass City hummed with excitement as numerous saloons, stamp mills, hotels, and businesses took advantage of the gold driven economy. Over 1000 people called South Pass City home during this raucous time. South Pass City was the first of three towns established due to the discovery of gold in what became the Sweetwater Mining District. Now a historic site, South Pass City has enjoyed 35 years of unprecedented notoriety as a result of the combined efforts of several state agencies. The last 35 years have seen South Pass City become one of the most accurately restored and authentically exhibited historic sites in the West. Seventeen of the site’s 23 original structures have been restored and exhibited, with many of the site’s 30,000 artifacts exhibited in their original buildings. Median Income: $31,531 The town of Riverton lies within the Wind River Indian Reservation and is the hub city for Fremont County, Wyoming. Riverton’s route along the Yellowstone Highway has made it a favorite stop-over for visitors to the Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Rendezvous City Rendezvous were held in this valley in 1829, 1830, and 1838. The rendezvous played host to many prominent mountain men including Jim Bridger, William Sublette, Kit Carson and Jedediah Smith. Every July, Riverton celebrates mountain man history by hosting the annual 1838 Mountain Man Rendezvous. This event keeps the old memories alive by providing a living encampment, games of skill, food and dancing. Riverton’s rendezvous site is the only rendezvous site that remains on original ground today. Central Wyoming College Founded in 1966 by a county-wide vote, CWC is one of Wyoming’s seven public two-year community colleges. The college offers a wide variety of programs and services to students, businesses and community members of all ages. CWC has off-campus sites in Jackson, Lander, Thermopolis, Dubois and the nearby Wind River Indian Reservation. The college also delivers college coursework nationwide via a variety of distance delivery methods. CWC’s services reach far beyond providing educational pro-

grams. The college is the cultural center for the region. With one of the finest visual and performing arts centers in the area, CWC offers a full slate of cultural activities. Professional touring groups augments concerts, exhibits and theater productions by CWC visual and performing artists. Visit CWC online at Recreation and Lifestyles Tucked in between the Owl Creek and the Wind River Mountains, Riverton offers opportunities for all types of outdoor recreation. There’s hunting and fishing, or hiking and rock climbing all within a few minutes drive. You can boat on Boysen Reservoir, play a round of golf, study Native American petroglyphs at Castle Gardens or fourwheel drive across thousands of acres of state and federal lands. Also be sure to visit the Riverton Museum. Open Tues. through Sat. 10am to 4pm, the Riverton Museum takes you on a trip to the past covering everything from trappers to cowboys. Another great place to take in history is the Wind River Heritage Center. Exhibits of Wyoming wildlife including 40 full-sized mounts including wolves, bears, bison, moose, elk, deer, bighorn sheep and smaller animals are featured here. Native American art, gifts, local history books and educational programs for schools and organizations are available at the Wind River Heritage Center. Fun Facts: • The name Riverton was selected by a committee of residents and successfully won over the railroad’s choice, Wadsworth. • Riverton was also the hometown of Leslie King, a prominent rancher who was President Gerald Ford’s father.

Founded In: 1884 Population: 962 (according to 2000 census) Elevation: 6,917 ft. Median Income: $28,194 Lying between the Wind River Indian Reservation and infamous Togwotee Pass is the quaint, rustic town of Dubois (DEW-boys). The first settlers wanted to call it “Never Sweat” because of the lack of hard work with some of the settlers, but the federal government named the town Dubois after an Idaho Senator. Dubois runs alongside the Wind River and is surrounded by the Wind River Mountains to the South and the Absaroka Mountains to the North. These mountains make for good logging and so the forests were heavily logged in the first half of the twentieth century to help meet the endless demand for railroad ties to the Chicago and Northwest railroad. Scandinavian Paul Bunyan types known as tie hacks could cut and shape about thirty ties a day, burning about 9000 calories in the process and earning a mere ten cents a tie. Today, Dubois is a popular stop for visitors traveling to Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. Recreational opportunities in the Dubois area include camping, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, hiking, photography and many selections of guest ranches and outfitters. Although summer travel is a large economic part of Dubois, there are many winter activities as well. The Dubois area has more than 150 miles of groomed snowmobile trails and access to the Continental Divide trail. Ice fishing, cross country skiing and the Brooks Lake Lodge dog sledding rides are also popular winter activities. Big Game and the National Big Horn Sheep Center Dubois is a region which hosts a vast variety of wildlife. People from afar visit this area to see some of Wyoming’s most diverse big game. Big game species include bighorn sheep, elk, mule deer, moose, antelope and black bear. Cougar and grizzly bears are occasionally sighted, as are wolves. To the South of Dubois lies Whisky Mountain which is home to Wyoming’s big horn sheep and several elk herds during the winter, although many more elk take up winter residence on the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s Inberg-Roy management area on the East Fork of the Wind River. Dubois is home to the largest wintering bighorn sheep herd in the Lower 48. Since 1949, more than 2,000 sheep have been transplanted to


Utah, Idaho, South Dakota, New Mexico and to other areas of Wyoming from the herd on Whiskey Mountain. Brooks Lake Located 20 miles West of Dubois, and about 7 miles off the main highway, Brooks Lake is located at the base of Brooks Lake Mountain. Brooks Lake Lodge was built in 1922 to serve as a stopover for the many tourists passing through the area on their way to Yellowstone. It is listed in the National Historic Register. The lake, lodge and mountain were named after one of Wyoming’s former governors, Bryant B. Brooks. Trail Lake Ranch Trail Lake Ranch, also called Whiskey Mountain Conservation Camp, is still owned by Wyoming Game and Fish. The facility is leased and programs are run by the Lucius Burch Center at Trail Lake Ranch, which continues the ranch’s long education history. Surrounded by sagebrush hills, massive mountain peaks and a conifer forest, Trail Lake Ranch provides the perfect outdoor classroom for exploring the natural world with expert guides. Just outside our door, high in

the northern Wind River Mountains near Dubois, Wyoming, rise the Fitzpatrick Wilderness and the Shoshone National Forest, one million acres waiting to be studied, explored and enjoyed.
