thesis:THE COTERIE OBJECTIVE: To come up with a new and unique type of space or to reimagine an already exisiting idea. One full semester was spent researching this idea and coming up with the schematic design. The second semester spent on this project was the physical creation of the building. I chose to research and design a modern day artists in residence community that gives artists a place to live, work, and further their careers all in one creative and communitydriven building. CONCEPT: The concept I chose for this project was a beehive. Beehives are natures perfect examples of a community. The members of the hive work together towards a common goal. They support eachother and are treated equal. This artists in residence program wil function similarly; it wil act as a community of artists who support and collaborate with eachother while working towards their common goal of launching their art careers. SOLUTION: I incorporated the beehive concept into my design majorly through use of hexagonal shapes in plan, furniture, and materials. This concept was incorporated in non physical ways through the use of community and supportive spaces. PROGRAMS USED: Revit, Photoshop

Research Summary: Artists notice the WORLD around them in a more DETAILED and ABSTRACT way than others. Mil ennials PURSUE MEMORIES and EXPERIENCES rather than possessions and would rather live in a situation that gives them experiences than a typical ‘nice’ apartment Co-working spaces should have a MIX OF` PUBLIC AND PRIVATE spaces and be DESIGNED FOR ITS USER in mind--not all are the same. The physical space and design of an art gallery has a huge EFFECT on the artists product and the COMMUNITY Thesis Question: How can a space be created that gives equal opportunities to artists while also giving them a space to live, work, socialize, and further their career in a safe and positive way? LEVEL 1 USE: The first floor of The Coterie is open to both residents and members of the outside community. This floor is home to a coffee shop, bar, pop up shop, art gallery, and staff offices. The coffee shop and bar allows the residents, community members and anyone else a chance to mingle and socialize in a relaxed setting. The pop up shop and the art gallery gives artists a chance to showcase their art in the gallery or sell their art in the pop up shop. Axon

LEVEL 2 USE: The second floor of The Coterie is open to residents. This floor is specifically for the residents to work on their art. Half of the floor contains open desks available to the 3D artists. These desks contain ample storage and desk space allowing the artists to comfortably create. The floor also contains a computer room, print room, and photography studios available for the photographers and graphic designers. Throughout the space there are workspaces available for residents to work in both private and public settings. There are also various breakout areas around the floor that give artists an area to get together and critique each others work.

LEVEL 3 USE: The third floor of The Coterie is open to only residents. This floor is where the residents live. This floor contains bedrooms, public living rooms, a public dining room, and public kitchens. It also contains separate amenities such as a gym, laundry room, and game rooms. The majority of the bedrooms are single but the floor contains six bedrooms that are ADA accessible and can be used as single or double occupancy. The rooms are purposely small in order to give residents the private space they need while also encouraging them to leave their rooms often to socialize with their fellow residents in the public areas.

HEALTHCARE design
Hospital design OBJECTIVE: To create a 3-story hospital with an emergency department, urgent care center, short-term rehabilitation facility, physical and occupational therapy facilities, specialized staff areas, and a customized third floor up to our discretion. CONCEPT: The concept I chose for this project was a rainbow. I chose this for two reasons. First, rainbows are bright and colorful and bring joy. Second, rainbows have significance. They are a great beauty that come out after a difficult storm. I wanted this to translate into my hospital design by creating a space that gives its users a place to forget the stress and worry that comes with any hospital stay. SOLUTION: I incorporated this rainbow concept into my design through color, curved lines, and calming spaces for patients, staff, and visitors wherever possible.

Pediatric Healing Garden
Healing Garden OBJECTIVE: This short, week-long partner project was to create a healing garden space for a hospital. We were challenged to use only 4 materials: copper, glass, concrete, and venetian plaster.
Hospital Logo
CONCEPT: For this project we wanted to create a calm and welcoming space with accessible views of the city where patients and their visitors could come to temporarily forget about the hardships of the hospital.

hostel design OBJECTIVE: For this group project, we were challenged to create a reception area and single, double, and quad rooms in Plus Hostel, an existing hostel in Florence, Italy. CONCEPT: The concept we chose for this project was the Duomo. We were inspired by its significance in Florence, geometric facade of green and pink marbles, gold decoration, and uniqueness. SOLUTION: We took inspiration from its colorful marble in green, pink, and white and used it extensively throughout our design. We also chose unique patterns to use for wallpapers, and fabrics with gold hardware. In the quad bedroom we built custom beds that emphasized our design and included elements of privacy and storage. The beds and the wardrobe included similar geometric elements and colors to those found on the Duomo’s facade. In the public spaces of the reception area and computer room we created spaces that prioritized community and allowed visitors to gather and be social. PROGRAMS USED: Revit, Photoshop

corporate office design OBJECTIVE:
Principles & Elements of Design:
To choose a well-known company and create a two-story office space with its brand in mind.
Shape
CONCEPT: The company I chose for this project was Nestle and my concept was a nest. Nestle is a very large company that owns a lot of smaller companies. I chose a nest because a nest acts as a home, just like Nestle is a home to all of its subsidies. A nest is intertwined with many branches that come together to make a one home.

SOLUTION: In this office, I wanted to create a space that felt open and welcoming to each of its visitors and employees alike. In particular, I wanted the space to feel communal and allow all levels of employees to feel confident approaching their bosses with any issues. To do this I only incorporated two private offices. The rest are open workspaces, allowing all associates to work side-by-side. Many of the materials I used were colorful and bright. I also incorporated materials with natural elements, such as wood and grass, and intertwining fabrics. PROGRAMS USED: Revit, Photoshop

My classmate Amber has a very specific style. She enjoys raw wood materials and tones of blue. She wanted a private office and common spaces to meet with employees and clients. Her office, located in Switzerland, overlooks the Swiss Alps, so having large windows to see the view and beautiful blue sky was important. I also included typical barn elements, such as an exposed rafted ceiling to pay tribute to her New England roots.

body shop design challenge OBJECTIVE: To create a custom cash wrap area and a custom impulse fixture for The Body Shop with a partner. CONCEPT: The concept for this project was Transparency. We chose this because The Body Shop is a company that has transparency and honesty with its customers. They are open about the ingredients and processes they use in the products. This creates a strong relationship between the company and their customers. SOLUTION:
3D Model
In our cashwrap and fixture design we created places for products to be showcased and stored with easy visual and physical access to the customers, allowing customers to know exactly what is available to them. On our side power wall, we included promotional posters from The Body Shop, which showcase the companies transparency and social issues they support. On the back power wall, we included a TV to allow the company another way to showcase their brand in a real-time, easy to update manner. PROGRAMS USED: Revit

I chose the Etsy store Urban Owl Co. which creates and sells customized and unique doormats. SOLUTION: For this store, I wanted to create a space that felt homey and welcoming. Doormats are meant to introduce visitors to your home and make them feel welcome, so I wanted to design a space that made you feel the same way. To do this, I included wood and warm tones. I also included a specific wall for customization- as that is a key part of the company. I wanted customers to be easily able to design whatever product they wanted to.

custom TEXTILE DESign OBJECTIVE: To create repeated textile pattern based on a concept with four colorways. CONCEPT: The concept I chose for this project was perception. I wanted to create a pattern where you perceived and saw something different every time you looked at it.
PATTERN REPEAT Concept Deconstruction
SOLUTION:
How repeat HOWshapes SHAPES REPEAT AGAINST EACHOTHER agai nst each other
I created a modified triangle that repeated both horizontally and vertically to create different visual elements. I also included a detailed line pattern within each shape that was only noticeable at a close view. My colorways were also important. Two contained two advancing warm colors and two receding cool colors. The other two each contained one advancing color and one receding color. In all colorways I changed where the darker color was placed, either in the shape or the background. By changing the colors, it allows you to see different shapes and aspects of the pattern.

custom light design OBJECTIVE: To create any type of custom light. CONCEPT: My concept was the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, also known as the Duomo, in Florence, Italy. I was inspired by the geometry of its exterior facade and the gold detailing on its dome and doors. SOLUTION: The Duomo is the most well-known building in Florence. It towers above the rest and it is hard to keep your eye off of its beauty. Many people say if you are lost in Florence, look up and let the Duomo lead you in the right direction. I wanted to create a light that is the center of attention in a space. Its gold material and unique cut-outs make it beautiful to begin with, but once the space is darkened and the light is turned on it shines its beautiful shadows on the ceiling and the walls around it, thus creating an object that is hard to keep your eyes off of.
